• 0:56
Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a lot of love to be, here Most definitely.
• 1:00
Speaker 1: How are things with the Lone Star Jeep Club?
• 1:03
  Speaker 3: They're doing great.
• 1:04
Speaker 3: Actually, we have had three events so far this year.
• 1:08
Speaker 3: We had our annual Polar Express run back in January up in Oklahoma.
• 1:12
Speaker 3: That's where we do a hat and glove donation drive and it's either warm or very cold.
• 1:19
Speaker 3: It was a great ride.
• 1:21
  Speaker 1: Good.
• 1:21
Speaker 1: So was it both.
• 1:22
Speaker 1: Was it warm and cold?
• 1:25
Speaker 3: It was cold, but not as cold as last year.
• 1:27
Speaker 3: At least it was in the double digits this year.
• 1:29
Speaker 1: Oh wow, Heat wave up there in Oklahoma.
• 1:32
Speaker 5: A little snow maybe.
• 1:35
Speaker 3: No, but we had some ice.
• 1:37
  Speaker 1: Ice.
• 1:37
Speaker 1: Okay, well, that's what you got those big studded tires for I had ice in my drinks last night.
• 1:41
Speaker 1: Did you have ice in my drinks last night?
• 1:43
Speaker 1: Did you have ice in your drinks?
• 1:43
Speaker 1: I had ice in my drinks.
• 1:44
Speaker 1: Okay, well, that's always good to have that.
• 1:45
Speaker 1: So that's one event.
• 1:48
Speaker 1: What's the second event that you've had already?
• 1:51
Speaker 3: That is our Valentine's Day run.
• 1:53
Speaker 3: That's down at Hidden Falls.
• 1:54
Speaker 3: We do that on or around Valentine's Day and in March, a couple weeks ago, we just had our 101 class.
• 2:01
Speaker 3: We're doing three of those this year, so introducing new jeepers into the club and how to actually use their jeep.
• 2:09
Speaker 3: So we do instructions in the morning, um, kind of a classroom hands-on instruction, and then we take them out and show them how to use the jeeps and then, and then you guide them home for drinks afterwards that that's right On the rocks.
• 2:24
Speaker 3: Yeah, on the rocks, we like it on the rocks, On the rocks.
• 2:28
Speaker 1: Yes, I know that you do.
• 2:29
Speaker 3: Now are you here in Houston?
• 2:30
  Speaker 3: Where are you?
• 2:31
Speaker 3: I'm up in the Dallas area.
• 2:33
Speaker 1: I'm actually in Frisco.
• 2:34
Speaker 1: Okay, Frisco, and I'm sure that you have folks that are here in the Houston area that are members of your club as well.
• 2:42
Speaker 1: We that are members of your club as well, we do, we have several members down there, yeah, so you know based on my past club experience not with Jeeps but other clubs that there's always some crossbreeding going on within the clubs where you know.
• 2:56
Speaker 1: Hey, yeah, I'm also a member of that club up there in the Dallas area, and then they've got a few members that are down here as well.
• 3:03
Speaker 1: So when you have an off weekend, if you still want to do something, one of the two clubs has always got something going on.
• 3:10
Speaker 3: There's a lot of clubs up here, right?
• 3:12
Speaker 3: So we have Lone Star, we've got North Texas Jeep Club, collin County, you've got some smaller clubs in East Texas and, you're right, there's people in a park, in all the parks every weekend.
• 3:27
Speaker 3: So if you wanted to go drive your Jeep you can certainly meet some of those other clubs at those parks.
• 3:34
Speaker 1: What is the favorite place to go up there in North Texas, in that area North Texas, not Hill Country, but the Piney Woods, east Texas what's a favorite place for a jeep gathering, to actually put your jeep through the paces, so to speak?
• 3:50
  Speaker 3: that's?
• 3:50
  Speaker 3: Uh, that's a good question.
• 3:52
Speaker 3: I think it comes down to personal preference.
• 3:53
  Speaker 3: I.
• 3:54
Speaker 3: I like barnwell um, it's out in gilmer barnwell mountain recreational area.
• 3:58
Speaker 3: Um, I just love that park.
• 4:00
  Speaker 3: It's big.
• 4:00
Speaker 3: There's a lot of challenges out there.
• 4:02
Speaker 3: Um, great camping area, great camping too.
• 4:03
Speaker 3: Um, a lot of challenges out there.
• 4:03
Speaker 3: Um, a great camping area, great camping too.
• 4:05
Speaker 3: A lot of people also like going down to mason.
• 4:09
Speaker 3: There's a park down in that area that they like to go to locally and we have our events.
• 4:15
Speaker 3: We have in the bridgeport off-road park.
• 4:17
Speaker 3: It's about an hour away.
• 4:19
Speaker 3: That's where we have our 101 class, not very big, but it's a nice park.
• 4:23
Speaker 3: They've made some, some big improvements.
• 4:25
Speaker 3: And then crossbars a couple hours away for us offers a little more ruggedness, if you will, in terms of rocks and some challenges.
• 4:34
Speaker 3: So but it's, it's all personal preference.
• 4:36
  Speaker 3: I love barnwell, um, I I.
• 4:38
Speaker 3: I grew up back east and it's kind of similar being back east, you know.
• 4:42
Speaker 1: So it's just it's a fun park see, for me, I, I think that, and this is just me.
• 4:47
Speaker 1: I have no experience in this at all, but I'm just sitting there while you're talking about these parks, I think my first one would be something with like a pop-up that has air conditioning towed behind the Jeep, because it's light and that thing trailers sway in and all that stuff, because it's light, you can sleep a couple of people comfortably, get your camping gear, put your stove back there and do that sort of thing.
• 5:15
Speaker 1: And then, when you're out jeeping through the hills of whatever park it is, you got your campsite set up.
• 5:18
Speaker 1: So you play all day, come back to the campsite, have a few beers and call it a night, Figure out what you broke I mean, figure out, yeah, what I broke.
• 5:28
Speaker 1: Well, in that case I tell the club I've broken this.
• 5:32
Speaker 1: Can somebody come help me?
• 5:33
Speaker 1: I continue with the beers and then they work on my car.
• 5:36
Speaker 1: See, I got it down.
• 5:39
Speaker 2: Do I not have it down?
• 5:40
Speaker 2: So you're in Fantasy Park.
• 5:42
Speaker 1: I am in Fantasy.
• 5:42
  Speaker 2: Park.
• 5:43
  Speaker 1: That's right.
• 5:45
Speaker 3: You've down so you're in fantasy park, I am in that fantasy park, that's right.
• 5:47
Speaker 3: You've got it down.
• 5:47
  Speaker 3: I do.
• 5:47
Speaker 3: The best thing to do is actually trailer your jeep.
• 5:48
Speaker 1: In that way, you can do whatever you want and if it breaks, you can just trailer it back, I know, but then now I've got to have to have another vehicle, the trailer the jeep and then I gotta yeah, yeah no, but have you seen the hybrid trailer and camper?
• 6:03
Speaker 3: so the camper, that's a flatbed.
• 6:05
Speaker 3: It's big enough to hold a camper like a slide-in that goes into the back of a pickup truck.
• 6:11
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 6:11
Speaker 3: So that's attached to the flatbed and then there's enough room to drive your Jeep and park it behind your camper.
• 6:18
Speaker 3: So you can actually.
• 6:21
Speaker 5: Is it really a camper slide-in that somebody puts on a trailer?
• 6:24
  Speaker 5: Similar?
• 6:25
  Speaker 3: Similar to that.
• 6:26
  Speaker 3: I've seen both.
• 6:26
Speaker 3: I've seen the slide-in that's been attached, and then I've seen where someone's removed the wheels and the axle from a trailer and attached it to the flatbed.
• 6:35
Speaker 1: That would be over at Mars' neck of the woods, you would do something like that.
• 6:39
Speaker 1: But here's the real question, tim.
• 6:41
Speaker 1: So does your wife know that you know this sort of thing?
• 6:46
  Speaker 3: She does.
• 6:46
Speaker 3: She's very supportive of my hottie, but she's not able to actually go off-roading because of some health issues.
• 6:54
Speaker 3: But up until then she was very supportive of it.
• 6:57
Speaker 3: In fact, one rare thing happened when I broke my axles in Hot Springs springs, arkansas.
• 7:03
Speaker 3: I called to tell her about it and she her first response was well, you know you wanted to upgrade to one tons next year.
• 7:10
Speaker 3: Why don't you just do it now?
• 7:11
  Speaker 3: So I can't think of a that's a good woman there I'm telling you that's a good woman.
• 7:16
Speaker 1: yeah, of course she's not married to her anymore, but I don't know.
• 7:23
Speaker 1: Uh, yeah, listen, I think that if I'm going to go off-roading and have to worry about breaking an axle at my age and experience, I'm out, I'll stay back.
• 7:36
Speaker 1: No, no, I'll stay back.
• 7:37
Speaker 1: I'll manage the campfire, the cold beers and I'll do my own thing.
• 7:43
Speaker 5: Have the s'mores ready to go whenever we get back To him.
• 7:45
  Speaker 2: it's like breaking a hip.
• 7:47
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's true, it'd be like breaking a hip.
• 7:49
Speaker 1: No, broken axles, no.
• 7:52
Speaker 3: Just be careful, I'm waiting to blow an engine so I can do an LS, oh boy, or an X.
• 7:58
Speaker 1: No, I think that if I was going to do that, I think what I do is, instead of buying an lx or something depend, ls, something that's dependable, I think I would consider going and find, finding a real american motors v8 and go the whole retro route elephant motor yeah, and put that in there.
• 8:15
Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah yeah do you have any?
• 8:17
Speaker 5: Do you have any jeeps in the?
• 8:18
Speaker 3: club that have any of those motors in them um, not a elephant, but we've got, of course, 392s in the club, um, and we have some older model jeeps that they have the v8 in them.
• 8:25
Speaker 3: Not a hell of a thing, but we've got, of course, 392s in the club and we have some older model Jeeps that have the V8 in them.
• 8:28
Speaker 1: I see it, I would have to go with the American Motors V8 because I have no experience with them, but I understand that they're pretty good motors.
• 8:36
Speaker 1: They're made in Kenosha, wisconsin.
• 8:38
Speaker 1: I mean, come on, mike, hey, I'm giving you credit.
• 8:41
Speaker 5: I'm just saying something like that.
• 8:42
Speaker 5: You would not necessarily want to go out and rock crawl it because you'd want to take better care of it.
• 8:48
Speaker 1: It's kind of like a restored car, but no, no Sleeper, because those motors can be had and, from what I understand, they're pretty stout and able to take the mess up.
• 9:01
Speaker 1: Yeah, I would do that All right.
• 9:04
Speaker 1: Take the the mess up.
• 9:05
Speaker 1: Yeah, I would do that all right with the, with the, with the four speed manual transmission in there, lockers where you have to get outside, get over there and, you know, get in the mud or between the rocks and lock up the front axle on the side, we could go to hertz, rent a jeep and go on the excursion.
• 9:20
Speaker 1: Yeah, well you could yeah like this does hurts this hurt does hurts rent.
• 9:25
Speaker 2: I just threw them out there as a plug.
• 9:28
Speaker 3: Probably not with 40-inch tires.
• 9:30
Speaker 5: Definitely not with 40-inch tires.
• 9:32
Speaker 1: So there's your expense.
• 9:33
Speaker 1: You'd have to go and buy yourself a set of 40-inch tires and I know you know people in the Jeep clubs that you hang out with Somewhere in that somebody's got a set of those 40 inches for sale.
• 9:46
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, they're out there.
• 9:47
Speaker 3: Yes, they're out there.
• 9:48
Speaker 3: But with an engine like that you might as well put a bigger lift on it and go to 42s, of course, because you're going to have the horsepower to manage it.
• 9:54
Speaker 3: And then you know gear it 532 or you know 538s, gear it down really low.
• 10:00
Speaker 3: So you have that power.
• 10:01
Speaker 3: With those gearing and those big tires, you'll just like just walk up I'd kill everybody.
• 10:07
  Speaker 1: I'd kill everybody.
• 10:08
  Speaker 1: I would.
• 10:08
  Speaker 1: I mean you.
• 10:09
Speaker 1: You couldn't compete against me.
• 10:10
Speaker 1: Yeah, hey, what do you got underneath the hood?
• 10:12
  Speaker 1: That's an amc.
• 10:13
Speaker 1: This is straight six.
• 10:14
Speaker 1: A 1970 model on each side, on each side, yeah well, the quick change pumpkin.
• 10:21
Speaker 1: You can change the ratio all day see, the problem with talking to you, tim today, is the fact that it stirs up all of these what's left of the few brain cells that I have left, thinking.
• 10:31
Speaker 1: Let's do it this way, that so we're going to have a tour, we're going to plan a tour, we're going to do a rock crawl event every other month, beginning now, all the way through the fall.
• 10:43
Speaker 1: We'll be done with the six-month tour.
• 10:46
Speaker 5: Okay, yes, I keep going back to his trailer with the camper on it.
• 10:51
Speaker 2: Of course you do no, no.
• 10:53
Speaker 5: But see, instead of getting a camper out of the back of a truck, go down to the portable building guy.
• 10:58
Speaker 1: Get him to build you a little building a little house on there, better yet, let's go the whole nostalgia route and let's find one of those truck bed bed mounted campers out of the junkyard.
• 11:11
Speaker 1: Now you got a job.
• 11:13
Speaker 2: Or you get a rollback, roll it back.
• 11:17
Speaker 2: Well, by the cab, you've got your compartment where you stay, and then you got on the back of the rollback.
• 11:22
Speaker 5: I want more room than that, then we can lower it down.
• 11:24
Speaker 2: You roll your Jeep off Now.
• 11:25
Speaker 5: I have to take the 40-inch tires.
• 11:26
Speaker 5: You, you lower it down, you roll your Jeep off.
• 11:27
Speaker 5: Now I have to take, like, the 40-inch tires.
• 11:28
Speaker 5: You know you put them inside your little building in there, and that could be your chairs.
• 11:31
Speaker 5: That's how you could carry your spare parts by using them as chairs to sit in.
• 11:36
Speaker 1: One of the many reasons that we have Mike Mars on this show is because he brings a different look at things.
• 11:42
Speaker 1: He's innovative, innovative and from very deep East Texas we're talking about Nederland, texas that you've never even heard of before.
• 11:49
Speaker 1: It's over in the Golden Triangle area, but it's a different mindset over there and he brings different ideas to the show, like that Thinkers Yep.
• 11:59
Speaker 1: And I noticed that you're not saying anything.
• 12:02
  Speaker 1: Tim.
• 12:04
Speaker 3: I have no response to that.
• 12:05
  Speaker 3: He's an off.
• 12:06
Speaker 5: Well, at least I didn't bring up the idea of cutting a hole in the bottom of it, like you do for ice fishing, except you'd use it for something else.
• 12:18
Speaker 2: My mind is spinning.
• 12:19
Speaker 3: I was thinking of all the different camper types out there.
• 12:21
Speaker 3: You could put on a flatbed.
• 12:23
Speaker 2: Yeah, you could build one yourself.
• 12:25
Speaker 3: Yeah, but you want air conditioning.
• 12:27
Speaker 3: You want a sink in the toilet.
• 12:28
Speaker 5: Oh yeah, I got an air conditioner in the garage I could put in it.
• 12:31
Speaker 3: There you go, you got to get it Run the generator.
• 12:34
Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, and that way you got a winch to winch your Jeep up onto the trailer.
• 12:37
Speaker 1: Mike's got all the parts and pieces.
• 12:39
Speaker 1: If it's not in the garage it.
• 12:49
Speaker 1: When's the next event for us Houstonians to come up and be with you, so to speak?
• 12:54
Speaker 3: So we're actually headed to Barnwell, where is Barnwell.
• 12:57
Speaker 1: I've heard of that.
• 12:59
Speaker 3: Outside of Gilmer Texas.
• 13:01
Speaker 1: Okay, where is Gilmer Texas?
• 13:03
Speaker 3: Gilmer Texas is in East Texas.
• 13:05
  Speaker 3: It's north Halfway between it's off of I don't know it's off of 59, I think 59 and 20?
• 13:14
  Speaker 3: 159, right yeah.
• 13:17
  Speaker 5: I think it's above 20.
• 13:18
  Speaker 5: I think it's north of.
• 13:18
  Speaker 5: It's about 20.
• 13:19
  Speaker 3: Yeah, it's between 30 and 20.
• 13:20
Speaker 1: In other words, you're kind of up there in the Arklatex Piney Woods.
• 13:26
Speaker 3: Yeah, it's in the Piney Woods.
• 13:27
  Speaker 1: Piney Woods.
• 13:28
Speaker 1: In the Piney Woods, yeah, there's a ghost out there too.
• 13:31
  Speaker 3: I've heard that.
• 13:33
Speaker 1: Yeah, well, yeah, if there's any ghosts to be found, I guarantee you they'll find me.
• 13:38
Speaker 1: I don't know what the draw is, but I guess it's the entertainment value Because you're a spooky guy, that's what it is well tim how much fun is this tim mahaffy with lone star jeep club.
• 13:50
Speaker 1: We, we, uh, we love talking to you, man, it's uh, it's tons of fun and, uh, we want to come up there and we want to hang with you guys at one of your events.
• 13:59
Speaker 1: Would that be okay?
• 14:01
Speaker 3: absolutely we don't have a jeep though you can ride with any one of us.
• 14:05
Speaker 3: You have a passenger seat.
• 14:06
Speaker 3: You can ride with me.
• 14:07
  Speaker 3: So when you.
• 14:08
Speaker 2: You see a Jeep pulling up with a trailer and an outhouse on it and another Jeep behind that, then that'll be us.
• 14:13
  Speaker 1: That's it.
• 14:14
Speaker 1: We can arrange to get a new Jeep.
• 14:15
  Speaker 3: There goes, mike.
• 14:16
Speaker 1: Exactly Well, tim, it's great to talk to you.
• 14:20
