- 0:42Speaker 1: Welcome to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland
- 1:01Speaker 1: bonus episode, a little thing we'd like to call the
- 1:04Speaker 1: after Party. This is the show after the show, the
- 1:07Speaker 1: party after the party, the bridge to get from one
- 1:09Speaker 1: full episode of disgrace clent to the other, the backyard
- 1:11Speaker 1: to dig into the dirt. On this episode, we are
- 1:14Speaker 1: talking about our new Peter Tosh episode of Disgraceland that
- 1:17Speaker 1: is in your feeds right now, Part one of two.
- 1:20Speaker 1: We're talking about the sources that went into the creation
- 1:22Speaker 1: of our Tosh episode, including the source that got us
- 1:26Speaker 1: that juicy tidbit on how Peter Tosh funded an album
- 1:29Speaker 1: by smuggling drugs. But that's for later, and of course
- 1:32Speaker 1: your voicemails, text dms and more, and as always, a
- 1:35Speaker 1: whole lot of rosie. Alright, just goes. Let's get into it,
- 1:50Speaker 1: all right. I have this thing that really annoys me,
- 1:52Speaker 1: and it's been someone from the corporate world, or any
- 1:54Speaker 1: professional world for that matter, any world other than the
- 1:56Speaker 1: music industry, when they refer to someone as a rock
- 1:59Speaker 1: star like some sort of reward, you know, like Danny
- 2:02Speaker 1: from accounting got all his work done and stayed laid
- 2:04Speaker 1: over the weekend.
- 2:05Speaker 2: What a rock star?
- 2:05Speaker 1: Or Shila down the street she pulled in our garbage
- 2:08Speaker 1: bins for us while we were on vacation, what a
- 2:10Speaker 1: rock star? Or did he see that Craig there? He
- 2:13Speaker 1: scored us tickets for that game? What a rock star?
- 2:16Speaker 1: I know now that I'm being kind of a prick
- 2:19Speaker 1: about this, but Danny, Sheila, and Craig they.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Are not rock stars.
- 2:23Speaker 1: If what was said about them didn't concern accounting, garbage
- 2:28Speaker 1: pails and sporting event tickets and instead went something like this,
- 2:31Speaker 1: Danny got a seventeen year old babysit or pregnant.
- 2:33Speaker 2: What a rock star?
- 2:34Speaker 1: Sheila overdosed on crack cocaine she brought from her neighbor Craig.
- 2:37Speaker 2: What a rock star.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Craig's doing twenty to life out of conquered MCI for
- 2:40Speaker 1: selling Shila that rock What a rock star?
- 2:43Speaker 2: Listen?
- 2:43Speaker 1: Music history is littered with illicit relationships with illegal and
- 2:48Speaker 1: sometimes deadly drug use. You know, we know this from
- 2:50Speaker 1: listening to this podcast. So many more transgressions, so much
- 2:53Speaker 1: more bad behavior. My point is that rock star behavior
- 2:57Speaker 1: should not be lauded. It shouldn't be celebrated, to be
- 3:00Speaker 1: treated like some sort of badge of honor, unless, of course,
- 3:03Speaker 1: you're some kind of degenerate hooligan with a twisted sense
- 3:06Speaker 1: of humor, which I have a feeling most of you,
- 3:08Speaker 1: like me, either are or were at one point. And
- 3:10Speaker 1: if you're not anymore and you say live the respectable
- 3:13Speaker 1: family life, a part of you still identifies with these
- 3:16Speaker 1: rock star heathens and is highly entertained by their behavior,
- 3:21Speaker 1: which of course is why we are all here. Also,
- 3:23Speaker 1: and this is the biggest part of the pet peeve
- 3:25Speaker 1: here equating just going the extra mile in a civilian life,
- 3:31Speaker 1: you know, being a good accountant, being a good friend,
- 3:34Speaker 1: being a good neighbor. Let's not get it twisted. Let's
- 3:37Speaker 1: not elevate that to rock star behavior. That is not
- 3:40Speaker 1: what that is. Clearly we know this, and I know,
- 3:43Speaker 1: like I said, I know I'm being a prick about this,
- 3:45Speaker 1: But why the hair across my ass? Okay, why about
- 3:49Speaker 1: Danny from accounting being a rock star. I don't know,
- 3:53Speaker 1: I guess to my point, I just made it cheapens
- 3:56Speaker 1: what rock stars actually do, staying late to work on
- 3:59Speaker 1: TPS reports over a tech It hardly compares with squatting
- 4:02Speaker 1: and Keith Richard's Jamaican vacation home as Peter Tosh did,
- 4:05Speaker 1: and refusing to leave by thread of your machine gun.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Peter Tosh was a rock star, and so was Keith Richards.
- 4:13Speaker 1: But here's where I'm a hypocrite. Just as I despise
- 4:16Speaker 1: the overuse and or misuse I should say of the
- 4:19Speaker 1: term rock star, I overuse and misuse the word badass
- 4:24Speaker 1: or the phrase badass, because that's what Keith Richards was,
- 4:27Speaker 1: a real badass.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Balls the size.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Of big whatever fruit kind of fruit they grow in Jamaica,
- 4:32Speaker 1: I don't know, mangoes whatever. Keith Richards had them to
- 4:35Speaker 1: stare down Peter Tosh and to get the armed to
- 4:39Speaker 1: the teeth Jamaican musician out of his place so that
- 4:41Speaker 1: Keith rich Justs can move back in. As the story goes,
- 4:44Speaker 1: you need mango size balls. You need to be a badass, okay,
- 4:49Speaker 1: a real badass.
- 4:51Speaker 2: But here's the thing.
- 4:53Speaker 1: I call people badass all the time, people who weren't
- 4:55Speaker 1: really badass. Okay, not in the truest sense of the term.
- 5:00Speaker 3: All right.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I've even considered myself to be a badass on occasion,
- 5:03Speaker 1: but I assure you I am not Keith Richards level badass.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Like I even have to mention that that is a
- 5:09Speaker 1: special kind of crazy.
- 5:11Speaker 2: And you know what I am talking about.
- 5:13Speaker 1: This is why these subjects, whether they're musicians, whether they're cooks,
- 5:19Speaker 1: whether they're artists, this is why they're so interesting. So
- 5:22Speaker 1: I don't want to dilute that, okay, and I don't
- 5:25Speaker 1: think any of us should want to dilute that. But
- 5:27Speaker 1: what I do think we should know is start to
- 5:29Speaker 1: get a sense of who from the world of music
- 5:32Speaker 1: and culture in general, who are the real badasses, those
- 5:36Speaker 1: who wouldn't back down, who won't back down, those who've
- 5:39Speaker 1: demonstrated real bravery, real craziness in the face of fear,
- 5:42Speaker 1: in the face of intimidation. Keith Richards definitely, Steve McQueen absolutely,
- 5:47Speaker 1: Michael Jackson, probably not, Marlon Brando, I don't think so.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Marilyn Monroe, I would say so one thousand percent.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Yes, who else?
- 5:54Speaker 1: Six one seven nine oh six six six three eight
- 5:58Speaker 1: To let me know who the most bad as musicians
- 6:01Speaker 1: and cultural figures are from history, and give me some
- 6:03Speaker 1: examples of their badass behavior, and I'll be back in
- 6:06Speaker 1: a moment.
- 6:27Speaker 3: All right.
- 6:27Speaker 1: As I said earlier, this week's episode on Peter Tosh
- 6:30Speaker 1: is part one of two. We've done a bunch of
- 6:33Speaker 1: two part episodes in the past here in Disgraceland, Guns n' Roses,
- 6:37Speaker 1: Willie Nelson, the Sex Pistols, Kurt and Courtney, the Beach Boys.
- 6:40Speaker 1: John Lennon was the first one. John and the way
- 6:44Speaker 1: this happened was the John Lennon episode. I researched it
- 6:47Speaker 1: and then I wrote it, and I wrote it as
- 6:49Speaker 1: one episode and I finished it and I.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Was like, Fuck, this is long.
- 6:54Speaker 1: How am I going to do this, and I just said, oh,
- 6:56Speaker 1: I'll just do two and that was it. And then
- 6:59Speaker 1: we sort of got into like, like, Okay, how do
- 7:00Speaker 1: we structure two episodes? How do we make them fit
- 7:04Speaker 1: and feel right and make sense? But you know, I'm
- 7:08Speaker 1: thinking this Peter Tosh episode, this might be our last
- 7:11Speaker 1: two parter for a while. And it's you know, in part,
- 7:15Speaker 1: just to be totally honest, we've been using it as
- 7:17Speaker 1: a crutch to not do the proper amount of editing
- 7:22Speaker 1: and outlining that we should. And and it's not crutch
- 7:26Speaker 1: is probably too harsh of a word, because it's also
- 7:29Speaker 1: a good thing for us when we when we get
- 7:31Speaker 1: two episodes out of out of one batch of research
- 7:34Speaker 1: in a way where we're doubling the amount of value
- 7:37Speaker 1: that we get from the work we've done. But at
- 7:40Speaker 1: the same time, you know, it's just there's so many
- 7:43Speaker 1: people we need to talk about here, and I can
- 7:45Speaker 1: already hear the criticism from some of you who, despite
- 7:48Speaker 1: what we love or think about Peter Tosh, You're you're
- 7:52Speaker 1: gonna sit there and you go, oh, really, Peter Tosh
- 7:54Speaker 1: gets two episodes, But you know, I don't know, the
- 7:57Speaker 1: Ramons get one. You know what I mean, Like, you
- 7:59Speaker 1: can make that argument over and over again about a
- 8:01Speaker 1: gazillion different subjects that we've covered, and we have this
- 8:04Speaker 1: new vision, this new Icon series we're doing, and it
- 8:08Speaker 1: just adds to the amount of people that we want
- 8:09Speaker 1: to talk about. It's a long list to cover, and
- 8:12Speaker 1: you know, we're taking up too much space with these
- 8:14Speaker 1: two partners, and we should be better at our jobs.
- 8:16Speaker 1: We should be better at coming up with concise, impactful,
- 8:20Speaker 1: hard hitting single episodes on one subject that really blow
- 8:24Speaker 1: your socks off. Not that the Tosh episodes aren't blowing
- 8:27Speaker 1: your socks off, I know they are. There's is so
- 8:29Speaker 1: much drama here. It made a lot of sense to
- 8:32Speaker 1: do this as two parts because it allowed us to
- 8:35Speaker 1: focus on his assassination and the conspiracy theories around the
- 8:39Speaker 1: assassination almost entirely in episode two. But I'm getting ahead
- 8:42Speaker 1: of myself, just giving you guys an update on a
- 8:44Speaker 1: little bit of the behind the scenes here, how we
- 8:46Speaker 1: made this episode and what we're thinking about future episodes
- 8:48Speaker 1: that we're going to make. This week's episode the part
- 8:50Speaker 1: one on the Peter Tosh story. Some fascinating research went
- 8:53Speaker 1: into this. The main biography that we use for research
- 8:56Speaker 1: for this is called Stepen Razor The Life of Peter
- 8:58Speaker 1: Tosh by John Missouri. Can only find this book as
- 9:01Speaker 1: an ebook. If it does exist in physical form, we
- 9:05Speaker 1: couldn't track it down. This covers Tosh's life in great detail,
- 9:09Speaker 1: including some super crucial stuff about why he decided to
- 9:11Speaker 1: leave the Whalers and that a big reason for his
- 9:14Speaker 1: leaving the Whalers was that Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records,
- 9:17Speaker 1: was grooming Toash's bandmate Bob Murley for superstardom and not
- 9:21Speaker 1: Peter Tosh. Another great resource for this week's episode was
- 9:24Speaker 1: a documentary called Stepping Razor Red X. This is a
- 9:27Speaker 1: film from nineteen ninety two, super cool. It uses these
- 9:30Speaker 1: audio tapes that Tosh made of himself talking about his life,
- 9:33Speaker 1: his views, his music, talking about everything. Tapes that he
- 9:35Speaker 1: made shortly before he was murdered. So basically it's like
- 9:37Speaker 1: Peter Tosh is narrating a film about his own life,
- 9:40Speaker 1: even though it was put together a few years after
- 9:42Speaker 1: he died. This is the source where I got the
- 9:44Speaker 1: quote it is dangerous to have the truth in your possession.
- 9:46Speaker 1: You can be found guilty and sentenced to death, which,
- 9:49Speaker 1: of course is a very poignant quote considering what happens
- 9:52Speaker 1: to Peter Tosh. Also, it's also where I got the
- 9:55Speaker 1: story that opens the episode about Tosh running to the
- 9:57Speaker 1: sounds of his parents and nearly getting blinded when he
- 9:59Speaker 1: runs into wire, which is just so painful to think about.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Maybe though, the craziest anecdote that we discovered came from
- 10:06Speaker 1: a book called Bob Marley in the Whalers nineteen seventy
- 10:08Speaker 1: three to nineteen seventy six, co written by Lee Jaffe,
- 10:11Speaker 1: who is one of Peter Tosh's associates back in the day.
- 10:14Speaker 1: This book is only available in French, so of course
- 10:17Speaker 1: I didn't get to read it, but I read a
- 10:20Speaker 1: lot about it, and there's this anecdote that comes from
- 10:22Speaker 1: this book that people were talking about that Peter Tosh
- 10:27Speaker 1: raised most of the money to make his album Legalize
- 10:29Speaker 1: It from you got a shipment of marijuana that was
- 10:32Speaker 1: illegally flown from Jamaica to the United States.
- 10:34Speaker 2: As you're going to hear in the.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Episode, this story is fucking nuts. This is the type
- 10:39Speaker 1: of story that is at the heart of Disgraceland. This
- 10:42Speaker 1: type of research that we do brings these stories out,
- 10:45Speaker 1: puts them in this new medium of podcasting. For you,
- 10:48Speaker 1: it's why you love the show. This to me is
- 10:52Speaker 1: next to the Keith Richards home invasion thing, the most
- 10:55Speaker 1: interesting part of the Peter Tosh story. If I was
- 10:57Speaker 1: hanging out, I was eighteen years old, only with my
- 11:00Speaker 1: boys at a party, drinking beers whatever. This is the
- 11:03Speaker 1: story about Peter Tosh that I would talk about. What
- 11:06Speaker 1: is the story about Peter Tosh that you would talk about?
- 11:08Speaker 1: Is this it? What do you think of this story
- 11:10Speaker 1: about using illegal shipment of dope flown from Jamaica to
- 11:15Speaker 1: the United States back in the seventies to fund what
- 11:17Speaker 1: is I guess probably his biggest record. I should know
- 11:21Speaker 1: this probably probably Peter Tosh's biggest album Legalize it?
- 11:25Speaker 2: Uh wild story?
- 11:26Speaker 1: Right, let me know what you think the wildest story
- 11:28Speaker 1: is six one seven nine oh six six six three eight. Also,
- 11:32Speaker 1: you got thoughts on the Bob Marley rewind episode that's
- 11:35Speaker 1: coming your way this week, you can hit me up
- 11:36Speaker 1: six one seven nine oh six six six three eight.
- 11:39Speaker 1: And I want to know, this is an honest to
- 11:40Speaker 1: god question.
- 11:42Speaker 2: You can only listen to one.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Who's it going to be? Bob Marley or Peter Tosh?
- 11:47Speaker 1: Six one seven nine oh six six six three eight,
- 11:49Speaker 1: And I want to know why. That's where you leave
- 11:50Speaker 1: a voicemail for me. That's where you leave me a text.
- 11:53Speaker 3: Uh.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Speaking of voicemails, let's check this one out from Barry
- 11:57Speaker 1: in the nine oh four.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Barry from the nine four Jake, Oh my gosh, I
- 12:04Speaker 3: love all Access all Access and it's five dollars for
- 12:09Speaker 3: five dollars. You should be ashamed if you can't afford
- 12:12Speaker 3: five dollars a month for what you're offering for the
- 12:15Speaker 3: price of two Mike's harder Limonade tall Boys weed for
- 12:23Speaker 3: a hand job. And so I'm back out for only
- 12:25Speaker 3: five dollars. You get so much, and you get to
- 12:29Speaker 3: interact with Demand himself and the rest of the discos
- 12:34Speaker 3: in your own chat channel, which I've already fucked up
- 12:38Speaker 3: by not replying to a message just typing in my
- 12:41Speaker 3: who's my generation? It's amazing, Jake, love it. I'm a member, man.
- 12:46Speaker 3: I've been listening to your stuff from like almost day one,
- 12:49Speaker 3: so it's cool to get on board to the all
- 12:51Speaker 3: access membership on leap day.
- 12:55Speaker 1: That's it, Barry in the nine of four, Thanks for
- 12:58Speaker 1: that message, man, listen to you guys, I love Barry Love.
- 13:02Speaker 1: I appreciate the message, and I appreciate that you sign
- 13:04Speaker 1: up for all access, but nobody should be ashamed if
- 13:07Speaker 1: they can't afford the five dollars a month.
- 13:08Speaker 2: You should be ashamed.
- 13:09Speaker 1: However, if you're getting a hand job in a back
- 13:11Speaker 1: alley with that five dollars instead of using it for
- 13:13Speaker 1: an all access membership, because I can guarantee that you
- 13:16Speaker 1: will get more value out of the disgrace Land all
- 13:19Speaker 1: access membership than you will from a back Alli hand job.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Not knowing anything really about back Ali hand jobs myself,
- 13:25Speaker 1: I can't speak to that experience directly.
- 13:28Speaker 2: It just doesn't sound that compelling to me.
- 13:30Speaker 1: However, you have all the discos and the Patreon chat
- 13:34Speaker 1: in there, the real heads talking stuff, talking music, talking
- 13:38Speaker 1: Disgraceland episodes, talking crazy stories about crazy people from history.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Get in here, Get.
- 13:43Speaker 1: In here with us, get the full version of this
- 13:46Speaker 1: after party, get an extra episode per month, and get
- 13:49Speaker 1: ad free listening, all for the cost of, as Barry
- 13:52Speaker 1: put it, a back Alli hand job. All right, let's
- 13:55Speaker 1: do a text here from the two to five. Oh Hey, hey, Jake,
- 13:57Speaker 1: I'm looking to be a better supporter and currently subscribe
- 14:00Speaker 1: to most platforms, which.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Provides you with the greatest cut.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Would rather support directly, but understand that all business needs
- 14:07Speaker 1: to generate money. Well two five, Oh, I really appreciate
- 14:10Speaker 1: the question. The answer to your question is all the
- 14:12Speaker 1: platforms treat it equally. Okay, So whether you're subscribed on
- 14:16Speaker 1: Apple or Spotify or Amazon or iHeart, it doesn't matter.
- 14:20Speaker 1: But if you want to put money directly into our pocket,
- 14:24Speaker 1: you can do so by going to disgraceland pod dot
- 14:27Speaker 1: com slash membership and signing up for our actual subscription
- 14:31Speaker 1: for five dollars a month that Barry was just talking about,
- 14:35Speaker 1: and you get a whole bunch with that that I
- 14:37Speaker 1: just mentioned. Okay, that's a way to directly sponsor the show.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Ask for which platform you subscribe on, it doesn't really matter.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Just keep listening, all right. A tow to Oz writes
- 14:45Speaker 1: in Anthony Bourdain a classic episode Chef's Kiss, I'm not crying,
- 14:50Speaker 1: You're crying. Fell in love after reading his nonfiction in
- 14:52Speaker 1: the odds. Thank you so much for that. Just bought
- 14:55Speaker 1: medium raw. Thanks for the recommendation. You got it a
- 14:58Speaker 1: two eight. Yeah, guys, we've got a lot of I
- 15:00Speaker 1: don't mean to keep pimping out this Patreon chat. But
- 15:03Speaker 1: there's a lot going on over there, including book recommendations,
- 15:06Speaker 1: and those are happening over on our Instagram as well
- 15:08Speaker 1: at disgrace lampod. I'm going to take a quick break
- 15:11Speaker 1: back in a flash with more voicemails, more texts, and
- 15:13Speaker 1: a whole lot of rosie. All Right, we are back,
- 15:29Speaker 1: and we are approaching the end of this week's after party.
- 15:32Speaker 1: But if you, like me, don't want the after party
- 15:35Speaker 1: to end just yet. If you need more of this,
- 15:36Speaker 1: more behind the scenes stuff, more holy shit moments, more

- 16:00Speaker 1: one exclusive, fully scripted episode of Disgraceland every month as well,
- 16:04Speaker 1: Hunter S. Thompson that we just released. We've got an
- 16:06Speaker 1: exclusive episode coming up for the All Access members on Lane,

- 16:27Speaker 1: this after party where I will be talking more about
- 16:30Speaker 1: that huge ship in a weed that was falling over
- 16:32Speaker 1: from Jamaica to the United States that funded Peter Tosh's album,
- 16:35Speaker 1: not to mention some other deeper revelations about the Peter
- 16:37Speaker 1: Tosh story, and talking more with all of you your voicemails,
- 16:40Speaker 1: more texts, emails, etc. Okay, all right, back in flash.
- 17:01Speaker 1: All right, let's recap, shall we one. There's more afterparty
