- 0:07Chicago Cubs faced the Cincinnati Reds at Riverfront Stadium for a Sunday doubleheader on June 8, 1975.
- 0:14The Cubs were managed by Jim Marshall in 1975. Marshall had the interim job midway through the 1974 season after the firing of Wally Lockman.
- 0:23Lockman had taken over the team in 1972 after the firing of Leo DeRoscher.
- 0:27DeRoscher had built a strong Cubs team that was able to finish in second place several times in the early 1970s, something that Cubs hadn't done in decades.
- 0:34But after he left, the Cubs tumbled under Lockman, finishing in the cellar with 96 losses in 1974.
- 0:41Cincinnati was managed by Sparky Anderson, who were a great team in the early 1970s, with over 95 wins in four of the past five seasons, including two trips to the World Series that fell short.
- 0:51But the Big Red Machine was on its way in 1975, entering this game in first place with a 32-22 record.
- 0:57This audio recording is from Game 1 of the doubleheader, featuring Cincinnati broadcasters Marty Brenneman and Joe Nuxhall.
- 1:04It's the Reds on radio with Marty Brenneman and Joe Nuxhall.
- 1:11Reds baseball is brought to you by Strohs, family brewers for 200 years, from one sports lover to another.
- 1:19And by the Marathon Oil Company, people who believe in people.
- 1:24By the First National Bank of Cincinnati, where your money grows safely in high-return certificates of deposits.
- 1:31By the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Cincinnati, bottlers of Pepsi-Cola, Dr. Pepper, and Scraps products.
- 1:37By Frish's, Frish's, sports, or any kind of fun, they just naturally go together.
- 1:44And by Riverside Fort in Newport, a block and a bridge from downtown Cincinnati.
- 1:54Now, for all the play-by-play action of Cincinnati Reds baseball, we go to Marty Brenneman and Joe Nuxhall.
- 2:04Good afternoon, everybody. From Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati, Joe Nuxhall and yours truly, Marty Brenneman, welcoming you to Reds baseball.
- 2:11Today, a double-header against Jim Marshall's Chicago Cubs to wrap up this particular series.
- 2:16And the Reds ticket office announced just a short time ago that tickets are available for the Twin Bill today.
- 2:21In the first game, right-hander Gary Nolan goes for his fifth consecutive victory.
- 2:25And for the Chicago Cubs, it'll be right-hander Rick Ruschel.
- 2:29We'll be back with a game line to do today after we pause for this message.
- 2:35If you're out in Aurora, Colorado on a Friday or Saturday night, you'll probably find it's a pretty safe place to be thanks to guys like Ed Gunnett,
- 2:44who thinks enough of his town to want to keep it that way.
- 2:47He doesn't get paid for it, but money's not the reason Ed became a member of the Aurora Volunteer Police Department.
- 2:54Ed's a volunteer because he believes being a good citizen means more than just living someplace and minding your own business.
- 3:00Ed believes you have to do something to make a town a good place to live.
- 3:04Now, Ed Gunnett doesn't have to spend a lot of his nights keeping his town safe, but he wants to because he believes in people.
- 3:12Ed Gunnett is also a full-time employee of Marathon Oil Company at the Research Center in Littleton, Colorado.
- 3:19Marathon is people just like you, just like me, who believe in people.
- 3:33Marathon Oil Company, people who believe in people.
- 3:40If you're ready now, the lineup for the Chicago Cubs in Game 1, leading off and playing shortstop is John Kessinger.
- 3:46Batting number 2 and in left field, Jose Cardinal. Billy Madlock at third base hitting third.
- 3:52Batting fourth, the center fielder is Rick Mundich. Batting number 5 and at first base, Andy Thornton.
- 3:58Hitting sixth, the right fielder is Pete LeConte. Manny Trio at second base batting seventh.
- 4:04Hitting eighth and catching is Steve Swisher.
- 4:07Batting number 9 and pitching for the Cubs in the first of our twin build today is right-hander Rick Ruschel.
- 4:13The Reds are on the field. We'll pass along their starting lineup after the playing of our national anthem.
- 4:19They can't you see by the long, curly line What so proudly we hail, at the twilight's last gleaming
- 4:35Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight O'er the ramparts we watch, were so gallantly streaming
- 4:50O'er the ramparts we watch, were so gallantly streaming May the bombs bursting in air,
- 5:06O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave
- 5:36Once again, quickly the Cub batting order today. Kessinger at shortstop, Cardinal in left field,
- 5:41Matlock at third, Mundy in center, Thornton at first base, and LeCocque in right.
- 5:46With Trio at second, Swisher catching and Ruschel pitching.

- 6:09Davy Concepcion at shortstop will bat 7. Hitting 8 in left field, George Foster.
- 6:15Batting number 9 and pitching for the Reds and the first one is right hander Gary Nolen.
- 6:20Again for Cincinnati, it's Rose at third, Dreeson in right field, and Morgan at second base.
- 6:25Bench catching, Perez at first, Geronimo in center.
- 6:28With Concepcion at shortstop, Foster in left field, and Nolen on the mound.

- 6:55Gary Nolen ready to go and Joe, a man with a great deal of momentum going for it.
- 6:59I hope to tell you, five or four straight wins and things have been going very well for Gary
- 7:05and certainly the ball club and I have to make that tremendous statement.
- 7:10We can't win two if we don't win the first one.
- 7:12Well, we've had good luck with it over the last couple of years.
- 7:15Here's Kessinger to start off the game for the Chicago Cubs as Nolen delivers to him
- 7:19a breaking pitch over on the inside of cause strike.
- 7:23While the Reds start out today in first place in the West, the Dodgers shut out by
- 7:27Steve Carlton and Philadelphia on two hits, four nothing last night.
- 7:31Here's the 0-1 swung out on a fly ball into left center field.
- 7:35Geronimo right there and Kessinger is at game first out.
- 7:41Counter will be left fielder Jose Cardinal who miraculously recovered from an ankle injury
- 7:46that he suffered late in yesterday's game.
- 7:49Had to be helped off the field by Cubs trainer and then the manager Jim Marshall
- 7:53and through the miracles of modern day science, he's back in the Chicago starting lineup.
- 7:59Cardinal batting 326 with five homers and 26 RBIs.
- 8:04Right-handed batter.
- 8:06Gary Nolen delivers to the plate and the pitch is swung on and hit in the air to left field.
- 8:11Concepcion is back there waiting on it and Davey puts it away and quickly two down.
- 8:16So with two outs, the hitter will be third baseman Billy Madlock.
- 8:22In that Philadelphia win last night, Dick Allen with two home runs off left-hander Doug Rauh,
- 8:28Allen's first two in a Philly uniform this season and a late two run shot by Greg Luzinski.
- 8:34Carlton picked up his second shutout of the year and the Reds are in first place by
- 8:39four-tenths of a percentage point as we begin today.
- 8:43Madlock looks at a strike.
- 8:46Cubs third baseman in his second year in the Chicago uniform batting 325
- 8:50has 32 RBIs and three homers.
- 8:54Outfield straight away for him. He swings and hits a fly ball into right.
- 8:58Danny Treason right there and the Cubs are very quickly out in the first inning.
- 9:03Three up and three down. They're scoreless in the top of the first and the Cincinnati Reds are coming to bat.
- 9:09You know if you're like most people, you think all banks are pretty much alike.
- 9:14So when it came time for you to choose a bank, you probably didn't look too hard.
- 9:19Maybe you went to the bank nearest you for convenience.
- 9:22Or maybe you opened an account at a financial institution that gives away all sorts of free gifts.
- 9:28Or perhaps you were attracted by what's come to be known as free checking.
- 9:33But choosing the right bank is serious business.
- 9:36Because when you open an account at a bank, you're actually buying that bank.
- 9:40Well you put your money in it, don't you?
- 9:42So when it comes time for you to buy a banking service, we at First National would like to suggest you shop around.
- 9:49Compare services, security, people, reputation.
- 9:53Chances are you'll choose the First National Bank of Cincinnati.
- 9:57But the important thing is you'll know you made the right choice.
- 10:01We can tell First National Bank can't hold us in 90s.
- 10:14We go on to the bottom of the first inning as Pete Rose prepares to lead things off against right-hander Rick Ruschel who's won four of nine decisions and has a fourth 19 earned run average.
- 10:23But Joe, we saw in a game of the week a couple of weeks ago this guy can be awfully tough on a given day.
- 10:29I hope to tell you his ball really sinks Marty and runs in on the right-handed batter.
- 10:35So if Rick is keeping the ball down, he can be an extremely tough guy to score on.
- 10:42He has two complete games and one was the one we were talking about against the Dodgers when he beat Andy Messers-Smith at Wrigley Field.
- 10:50Rose in and waiting as Ruschel delivers to the plate and the pitch hits Pete.
- 10:54Rose slams a bat down in disgust. That pitch appeared to hit him in the lower part of the back.
- 10:59And he's really upset as he fires a bat down and goes on down to first base.
- 11:12Rose a little bit upset as he stands down atop the bag at first and he didn't let his feelings hide themselves at all.
- 11:20He fired that bat down and well I would have to say that there was a purpose for that certainly.
- 11:27I think Ruschel meant it.
- 11:30Now we'll see what develops in this game. Here's Danny Dreeson that pitches low to it.
- 11:35Dreeson playing right field today with a return of Tony Perez to the Reds' order and Danny's swinging a hot bat.
- 11:41Sparky wanted to keep it in there. Hitting 257. Here's a throw to first base and Rose steps back.
- 11:48Dreeson with his first home run of the season and certainly one of the longer shots that we've seen at Riverfront Stadium this season.
- 11:55A right center yesterday. He takes it up high and he's out in front at 2-0.
- 11:59Well if there was a purpose for Rick Ruschel hitting Pete Rose to start this inning maybe we can make him pay for it by getting some runs off.
- 12:08Rose at first a 2-0 count on Danny Dreeson.
- 12:12Joe Morgan swinging a bat in the on-deck circle as the right-hander checks in with Swisher and throws to the plate.
- 12:17That's swung on and hammered foul down the left field line.
- 12:21In the Cubs infield Andy Thornton is at first base. Manny Trio at second.
- 12:25The captain of the Chicago Club, Kessinger at shortstop and Madlock at third.
- 12:30In left field Jose Cardinal and center Rick Mundy and in right Pete LeCocque.
- 12:35Swisher behind the plate and Rick Ruschel behind to the left-handed batting Dreeson bringing it up to the plate.
- 12:42This one taken outside and high it's a ball three. Three and one.
- 12:49Cubs losing each of the first two games of the series.
- 12:54Five to one against Gullet. Eight to one against Billingham.
- 12:59Ruschel Lopp throwing on to Thornton before throwing the three-one on to Danny Dreeson.
- 13:07LeCocque deep in right field. Here's the pitch.
- 13:11That is taken ball four low and the Reds get their first two men on in the first inning.
- 13:22Joe Morgan batting 337 with seven homers. He got number seven yesterday and 32 RBIs.
- 13:30He's been hitting 348 in his last six games with eight hits and 23 times up.
- 13:37So Rose at second, Dreeson at first to hit back with a walk. Gets him on with nobody out.
- 13:46Ruschel into his stretch motion as he checks Rose at second, delivers inside of ball to Morgan.
- 13:53Well we were certainly witness to some Chicago pitching that had problems finding the strike zone yesterday
- 14:01in the sixth inning in which the Reds scored three times and batting around had only one hit but Cub pitchers served up five walks.
- 14:10Ruschel having trouble here in the first inning. Morgan is out in front ball two, two and nothing.
- 14:16They've got the full complement of four umpires working today with Bob Engel returning.
- 14:21He's at first base. Doug Harvey calling balls and strikes. Harry Wendel stand at second and Dutch Renner at third.
- 14:28No score in the first inning but we're trying to change that situation.
- 14:32Here's a very, very high fly ball in the straightaway fairly shallow right field.
- 14:37LeCocque is under and he makes the catch. One out and the batter will be Johnny Bench.
- 14:43Johnny enjoying a most productive day in the eight to one victory yesterday as 12th homer of the year.
- 14:56A two run single, a bases loaded walk. He now totals 43 RBIs which is topped not only in the National League but also in the Major League period.
- 15:05And his 12 home runs the pace center in our league.
- 15:10Batting 282. Rose leading at second. Griesen likewise at first but now one out in the inning.
- 15:17The rush will pitch and Bench swings and does not get it.
- 15:27Good day for baseball here in Cincinnati and another fine, fine crowd on hand.
- 15:33It's the hottest club in the National League having won 14 out of their last 17 and with a win here yesterday now 10 over the 500 mark at 32 and 22.
- 15:43Bench again does not get the pitch and it's 0-2.
- 15:47So Rushal very quickly getting his act together after hitting Pied and walking Danny.
- 15:53Got Morgan on a fly ball to LeCocque in right field and he's out in front two strikes on Johnny Bench.
- 15:59The Chicago in field a double play depth.
- 16:03Rushal pauses and delivers and Bench strikes out swinging as he went after a pitch away.
- 16:11Two down and Tony Perez coming to the plate as Tony makes his first appearance in the Cincinnati starting lineup since May 25th.
- 16:21The second game of that Memorial Day double header here in which he was hit in the right thumb by a Jim Lombard pitch.
- 16:28Suffered a fracture on the tip end of that thumb and except for a couple of pinch hit rolls this is the first time for him.
- 16:36He tries to get the Reds on the board with two out. Rushal delivers and Tony swings and misses.
- 16:45Perez batting 219 with seven home runs and 31 runs batted in.
- 16:56Strike one delivery missing on the inside it's a ball and it's even at one ball in one strike.
- 17:04The San Francisco Giants and the Pittsburgh Clarence are underway in the first of their double dip.
- 17:08Ed Helicki going against rookie left hander John Candelaria and the Giants have scored a run at the top of the first inning.
- 17:16Strike two on a foul ball in the middle of Steve Swisher.
- 17:20One ball and two strikes on Tony Perez and Rick Rushal doing a pretty good job right now.
- 17:26The first two men in the inning get on against him but is a strike away from leaving those two stranded here in the bottom of the first inning.
- 17:35The outfield for Perez is straight away in deep.
- 17:39Swisher sends out the sign as Rushal checks in with him.
- 17:45Right hander ready to go and he brings it to the play.
- 17:48Perez strikes out swinging on a fastball up and in and the side retire.
- 17:53No runs, no hits, no errors and two men left on and it's the end of one complete.
- 17:58The Reds nothing and the Cubs nothing.
- 18:01The folks at the Strow Brewery want to remind you that it's Strow A Party time and they also want to give you a free recipe on how to Strow A Party.
- 18:15So here goes. First get yourself some good music like this.
- 18:22Next add some good friends and neighbors.
- 18:27Spread around some good snacks like potato chips, pretzels, things your friends like or be different and surprise them with something new and good.
- 18:35Then top everything off with plenty of good cold Strow's beer. That's the important part.
- 18:41Blend it all together and you've got yourself one great party.
- 18:45Keep this in mind the next time you're out shopping and look for the Strow A Party display featuring our Stakehold 12 pack wherever you buy beer.
- 18:53And we'll see you at the party.
- 19:00The Strow Brewery, Detroit, Michigan.
- 19:06Chicago Center fielder Rick Bundy and their cleanup hitter will lead off the top of the second against Gary Nolan who disposed of Kessinger, Cardinal and Madlock in bang bang fashion in the first inning.
- 19:17Gary in his last start at physical problems developed stomach cramps so severe that he finally had to leave that game in Pittsburgh with one out of the seventh inning but got credit for an eight to four victory.
- 19:29And his two victories before that a one run four hit performance against the Montreal Expos there and then came back in his next start to shut out the Expos and only two base hits.
- 19:41So Gary Nolan is pitching very, very well. He delivers a strike to the taking Monday.
- 19:46Rick hitting three oh two five homers and twenty five runs batted in for this veteran center fielder.
- 19:54Wings and misses at an off speed pitch away and he's down at oh and two.
- 20:00Andy Thornton on deck and he'll be followed by the right fielder Pete LeCocque.
- 20:07Nolan working rapidly back with the oh two delivery and that is strike three swinging.
- 20:14Gary Nolan picks up his first strike out of the game and his thirty seventh of the year. He's walked only 14 batters an amazing statistic in itself when you consider the two of them have been intentional walks and he's pitched the total now of eighty three eighty four innings complete.
- 20:32That right handed batter hitting three twenty eight pitch to him is taken at the knees a call strike one. Gary Nolan continually throwing absolutely nothing but strikes.
- 20:45I don't believe he's missed with a pitch out of the strike zone since this game started.
- 20:54Thornton swings and misses at a curve outside a breaking ball he was lunging at that good strike to.
- 21:01Cincinnati infield as Perez at first Morgan second concept the own a short rose at third an outfield of Foster Geronimo and recent left center and right bench behind the plate.
- 21:12Thornton looks at the pitch down and away at the ball and two strikes.
- 21:22Andy Thornton out of the batter's box but now back in. Gary Nolan starts into his wind up stops starts again and Thornton steps out.
- 21:34Harvey will go to dusting the plate off. Now the ball two strikes one out bases empty in the second pitch just missing the outside ball to do and to.
- 21:59To pitch that is like three call.
- 22:04Came with a fastball at Thornton and he's going to argue a bit about it with the plate on fire.
- 22:08Doug Harvey that looked from our vantage point to be one heck of a good fit but Thornton didn't think so and he talks about it.
- 22:16Two away back to back strikeouts for Nolan. Here's right fielder Pete LeCocque.
- 22:25LeCocque a left handed hitter he has appeared in both games in the series.
- 22:33Swings on the first pitch and it's a fly ball to right field Danny Dreeson moving over to his right and puts it away to retire the side.
- 22:40So the Cubs are as they were in the first inning quickly out of order in the second.
- 22:44And after one and a half innings of play in our first game it's a reds nothing and the Cubs likewise.
- 22:51The feeling of.
- 22:59The.
- 23:02People.
- 23:05The.
- 23:08The.
- 23:11The.
- 23:21The.
- 23:24The.
- 23:27The.
- 23:30The.
- 23:33The.
- 23:36The.
- 23:41The.
- 23:46The.
- 23:51The.
- 23:56The.
- 24:06The.
- 24:12The.
- 24:17The.
- 24:27The.
- 24:33The.
- 24:40The.
- 24:47Russia with a long look and he shakes off Swisher and now deals the 0 1.
- 24:52That backs Geronimo off the plate a ball and it's one ball and one strike.
- 24:58Riverfront Stadium most kind of the Reds this season 20 wins and five losses in 25 games.
- 25:06Now ball off the 1 1 pitch hope we can make it 22 and five after this twin bill today we want a double letter lost one and split one.
- 25:17Split with Houston here lost to Philadelphia and.
- 25:23Swept Montreal.
- 25:27One and two delivery swung on a fly ball down the left field line it'll be out of play.
- 25:34Tomorrow night the Pittsburgh Pirates come in for a two game series Freddie Norman will go against Jerry Royce the same match up as we witnessed in Pittsburgh on Wednesday night.
- 25:46Quite a pitching duel between those two guys another foul as Geronimo stays alive.
- 25:51Then on Tuesday night Pat Darcy will be going against left hander Sam McDowell.
- 26:01Geronimo behind to the right end of Russia of all two strikes.
- 26:09Russia ready Geronimo ground ball foul at first base and on down to the Reds bullpen.
- 26:19We wrap up the series here against the Cubs the Dodgers and the Phillies are doing the same thing although a single game in Philadelphia today.
- 26:27Don Sutton after his 11th victory against Jim Lombard.
- 26:33And the Dodgers will be going home for 10 days.
- 26:38That's one out of the base hit center field.
- 26:46First Cincinnati hit first hit of the game for that matter goes to Geronimo as he lines one back up the middle off the one and two pitch.
- 26:54And the hitter now will be our shortstop Dave Concepcion who is a proud owner of a nine game hitting streak coming in today.
- 27:02The longest hitting streak on our club this season at 11 for 36 over the nine game span and on the year hitting two nine six with three homers and 27 RBI.
- 27:21Russia working out of the stretch as the chief leads at first.
- 27:24Here's a fun foul off the third base line by Concepcion.
- 27:31Mention that San Francisco Pittsburgh double letter another double letter scheduled today up in Montreal San Diego and the Expos rained out two straight days up there.
- 27:40Going in a pair this afternoon Frye Slevin or other McIntosh against McNally in the first game.
- 27:53Madlock playing just a bit in shallow at third base but before Rushel throws to the plate he throws to first base.
- 28:02One strike to count on David.
- 28:04There goes Geronimo pitches swung on and missed the throw down to second is in time.
- 28:09Concepcion as we saw yesterday simply threw his bat at the ball.
- 28:15Trying to protect the runner and Geronimo cut down Swisher to trio two to four if you're scoring with.
- 28:25So the bases are empty as Geronimo is caught stealing and a two strike count on Dave Concepcion with one out.
- 28:39George Foster will be up next.
- 28:44Maybe taking his time getting back in the batter's box as Russia waits patiently out on the mound.
- 28:53Now the wine in the pitch strike three swinging.
- 28:58Rushel's third strikeout inside the first two innings he'll be working against Foster now with two down.
- 29:09Foster hitting 280 and he's second on the club with his nine homers.
- 29:13The Johnny bench is twelve and has 17 runs better than.
- 29:20Other single games in the National League today mention the L.A. Philadelphia game and Atlanta and New York.
- 29:27Buzz Capra will go against Tommy Hall as the former Reds reliever makes his second start for Yogi Berra.
- 29:36Foster fouls back the first pitch.
- 29:39George with a home run here on Friday night.
- 29:50Two down in the inning nobody on base and a no score game in the second.
- 29:58Foster hits a broken bat slow ground ball the shortstop Kessinger has it in his throw to Thornton is in time to retire Foster and retire the side.
- 30:07No runs a hit nobody left on replay to complete now with a score Cincinnati nothing Chicago nothing.
- 30:15Everybody in baseball knows you have to expect the unexpected that all times you never know what might happen.
- 30:21For example there was a play in a Cub Dodger game during the 1916 season.
- 30:26Casey Stingle is the authority for this one and as Casey says you can look it up.
- 30:30It happened on a strikeout the Cubs were at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn their batter only Zyder struck out.
- 30:36The pitch got by the Brooklyn catcher and hit the umpire now Lisa and in the chest the ball rebounded toward third base.
- 30:43There Mike Maori the Brooklyn third baseman picked up the ball off the grass and fired it to first in time to retire the batter Zyder running the first after he had fan.
- 30:54A crazy unexpected way to get a man out and the Brooklyn third baseman Maori was credited with an assist on the strikeout.
- 31:03We recall this moment in history because the people at Stroh's believe a good baseball story is worth telling.
- 31:10The Stroh Brewery Company Detroit Michigan family brewers for 200 years.
- 31:19Terry Nolan has retired the first six Cub batters to face him and as we go on to the top of the third inning he'll be first working against second baseman Manny Trio.
- 31:27Here to call the action for you Joe Nuxall.
- 31:30All right Marty and the trio Swisher and Russel here in the third inning.
- 31:35Gary has had a couple of strikeouts got Monday swinging and Thornton looking in the second inning.
- 31:43Nolan in his 12th start of the year ready to go to work to Manny Trio delivers the first pitch of fastball for a called strike.
- 31:54Gary has completed four games and a fine 271 earned run average.
- 32:01Nolan into the line the 0-1 that swung on and hit into right field Manny Dreesen moving in he has it one away.
- 32:12One down and Steve Swisher to the plate. Swisher a 180 batting average with seven RBI's six doubles a triple.
- 32:22Steve a graduate of Ohio University.
- 32:26Now Nolan talking with Pete Rose on the mound and looking into the bench and now Larry Starr the trainer is going up and whether it's Pete or.
- 32:41Well it's Pete apparently has something in his right eye.
- 32:48Larry Starr checking things out. Doug Harvey the plate on fire there looking on.
- 33:02First game at Pittsburgh after two innings the Giants lead the Pirates 1-0.
- 33:09The only game underway at the moment other than this particular game in the National League.
- 33:16Are you ready to go? Nolan's first pitch to Swisher is high and inside of all.
- 33:24It's your Rick Rushell on deck.
- 33:28Aligned the 1-0 Swisher takes us from the cost of a strike.
- 33:32Larry getting the outside corner one and one.
- 33:36Outfield shades just a bit toward right for Swisher the 1-1 delivery that swung on and popped up.
- 33:44Larry Perez first base waiting he has it two away.
- 33:54Two down that'll bring pitcher Rushell up.
- 34:02He's hitting 0-87 he's had an RBI and a home run two hits and 23 times to the point.
- 34:10Harry winds and the fastball gets the outside corner.
- 34:14All strike.
- 34:21Rushell a big guy.
- 34:240-1 delivery.
- 34:26Perez was put on and missed.
- 34:28Nolan quickly out in front 0-2 to Rushell.
- 34:36The 0-2 on the way. Spectre call the fastball gets the outside corner and I'll tell you.
- 34:43This man when he is going can make it look so easy it's almost pathetic.
- 34:48So the Cubs out in order in the third nothing across and at the middle of the third no score.
- 34:56Stop and enjoy a big big boy.
- 34:58A double that can't bring the treat.
- 35:00The national favorite coast to coast.
- 35:03So stop and enjoy a big big boy.
- 35:06Watching the Reds win at Riverfront Stadium has always been a great way to spend the day.
- 35:11And one sure way to add to that enjoyment is going to Frisch's before or after the game.
- 35:17It's all part of the tradition.
- 35:19Why Frisch's?
- 35:20Because not only does Frisch's offer a wide variety of great tasting treats from sandwiches to full course dinners.
- 35:26They also have the convenience of curb service.
- 35:29When you drive into Frisch's there is never any waiting for curb service.
- 35:33You simply press the button on the speaker and your order is taken immediately.
- 35:37Fast, easy and convenient.
- 35:40That's the best way to describe Frisch's curb service.
- 35:43So the next time you're on your way to the game curb your appetite.
- 35:47Visit your nearest Frisch's drive-in restaurant.
- 35:50Stop and enjoy a big big boy.
- 35:52A double that can't bring the treat.
- 35:54The national favorite coast to coast.
- 35:57Stop and enjoy a big big boy.
- 36:02Reds coming to bat.
- 36:03They'll send Gary Nolan to the plate to lead it off the bottom half to third.
- 36:08Gary sent five hits and 25 times to the plate this year.
- 36:19This is Brendan's man.
- 36:22First pitch to Nolan is a called strike from Rushel.
- 36:26Gary's had an RBI.
- 36:35The 0-1.
- 36:36Nolan takes a half swing and cost him 0-2.
- 36:45Gary owns one major league home run that was hit in Candlestick Park a few years back.
- 36:500-2 delivery.
- 36:51Missing low and outside.
- 36:521-2.
- 36:57A while since we've had a pitcher hit a home run.
- 37:031-2 delivery.
- 37:05Swung on and missed and Rushel has his fourth strikeout.
- 37:09One away and here's Pete Rose and Pete was really upset in the first inning.
- 37:14The first pitch of the ball game, two feet out of the ball game,
- 37:19and hit Pete somewhere in the legs and boy he slammed the bat down and was very upset.
- 37:34Rose with a 2-97 batting average.
- 37:37Rushel delivers and that's taken inside and high a ball.
- 37:43Made three home runs and 28 RBIs.
- 37:46The op field for Pete straight away.
- 37:49Rushel works.
- 37:50Rose swings and it's a strike.
- 37:54Pete tried to check.
- 37:56Count evens one and one.
- 38:02Great crowd in yesterday's ball game.
- 38:0547,000 plus.
- 38:061-1 delivery.
- 38:07Swung on and fouled of all two strikes.
- 38:10And this afternoon, well, even more than the 47,000.
- 38:18A ball, two strikes to count to Rose.
- 38:21The base is empty and one away.
- 38:24Rushel has his sign and the 1-2.
- 38:29Inside as Rose leans away from the slider.
- 38:32Count evens two balls, two strikes.
- 38:35Danny Dreesen waits on deck.
- 38:40Rushel the 2-2.
- 38:43Outside, full count to Pete.
- 38:49Reds have had one hit off.
- 38:51Rushel not being Geronimo's single leading off the second inning.
- 38:58A payoff on the way.
- 39:00That's a half swing bouncer to 3-0 at second.
- 39:05He has it on the fourth and two down.
- 39:08He tried to check the swing on the off speed pitch.
- 39:12It bounces to 3-0, two away and Danny Dreesen to the plate.
- 39:17Dan walked in the first inning.
- 39:20Dreesen in right field.
- 39:23This afternoon, Kenny Grippy having problems with that hand again.
- 39:29Heard it quite a while ago.
- 39:32Rushel delivers to Dreesen outside the corner of called strike.
- 39:44All in one to count.
- 39:47Rushel delivers.
- 39:49Dreesen looks at it inside this time and it evens it 1-1.
- 40:02Rushel a slow worker.
- 40:04Now the 1-1 on the way.
- 40:06That swung on a hard one bouncer.
- 40:08Kessinger at short.
- 40:10His throw on to Thornton and that's it for the Reds.
- 40:13They're out in order in the third.
- 40:14Nothing to cross.
- 40:15After three innings here in the first game at Riverfront, the Reds nothing, the Cubs nothing.
- 40:22When people get old or sick or both, they live alone.
- 40:26It's pretty near impossible for them to get the hot meals they need to make them feel good.
- 40:31That's why Jim Frankert, John Winnum, Dick Manning, Paul Geyer and Jim Youngflesh became members of an organization in Finley, Ohio called Local Meals.
- 40:41On their lunch hours these men take hot meals to people who otherwise wouldn't get them.
- 40:45And they bring more than food with them when they come to call.
- 40:48They bring warmth and kindness and love.
- 40:51These men don't have to spend time making people happy, but they want to because they believe in people.
- 40:58These men are also full-time employees of Marathon Oil Company, Finley, Ohio.
- 41:19Marathon Oil Company, people who believe in people.
- 41:27Well, we've gone through three quick innings here in the first game of the doubleheader.
- 41:31The Cubs nothing to cross.
- 41:33The Reds have had a hit.
- 41:34It's going to be Don Kessinger leading it off in the fourth.
- 41:37Back with the action, Marty Brenneman.
- 41:40Kessinger leading off the ballgame at a fly ball to center field.
- 41:44Nolan has struck out three in the first three innings.
- 41:47As Joe mentioned, has not allowed anybody to reach on him.
- 41:50In fact, only one hit in the game and that was a single by Geronimo leading off the second.
- 41:55Kessinger a switch hitter batting 262.
- 42:03Nolan throwing the first pitcher in the fourth and it's too much inside ball one.
- 42:08Don is a left-handed batter hitting 268 this season.
- 42:11He's had 10 of his 13 RBIs that way.
- 42:14And a 250 hitter is a right-handed batter.
- 42:17The 1-0 delivery, that stays in on him.
- 42:20It's ball two.
- 42:21Gary Nolan starting Kessinger out with two pitches in and both missing.
- 42:25Two balls and no strikes.
- 42:27Cardinal and Madlock to follow in the inning.
- 42:30Rose playing a shallow third base.
- 42:32Kessinger hits a fly ball in the right field.
- 42:35Dreesen backing on it.
- 42:36Danny waiting.
- 42:38One out.
- 42:44So make a tense straight that Gary Nolan is retired as he goes to work against left fielder Cardinal,
- 42:49who popped out to shortstop the first inning.
- 42:53This reminder, the winning entries in the Reds-McAlpens Draw,
- 42:56your favorite Cincinnati Reds player contest,
- 42:58will be on display next week at the McAlpens store in Northgate.
- 43:01Stop by and see them if you're in the area.
- 43:04No score in the game, fourth inning.
- 43:07Cardinal and it's a fastball down low a ball.
- 43:11In the second game today, a left-hander will go for Chicago.
- 43:15Jeff Zahn, the former Los Angeles Dodger.
- 43:17And for Cincinnati, right-hander Clay Kirby.
- 43:22Two balls, no strikes.
- 43:27Cardinal, of course, a veteran.
- 43:33Spent some years with the California Angels in the American League.
- 43:36Had a good year with the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 43:39There's ball three to it.
- 43:43So Nolan has gone a three-ball count for the first time in this game.
- 43:47Falls behind three and Oda Cardinal.
- 43:54The pitch on the way, and that's over for a second strike.
- 43:59Cardinal, back in 1970, hit 293 with the Cardinals.
- 44:05Two years ago, a 303 batter with the Chicago team, his best year.
- 44:09He swings on the 3-1 and pops it up.
- 44:12Just behind second base, Morgan camping and makes the catch, so two down.
- 44:20Here's Billy Madlock, the two-out hitter.
- 44:22Fly ball to Dreesen in the first inning.
- 44:25The Dodgers and the Phils are underway.
- 44:27L.A. scoreless in the first against L'Anne Borgue, Philadelphia, batting against Sutton.
- 44:34Talking about the fact the Dodgers are going to be going home.
- 44:36They'll be facing Montreal and New York in a pair of two-game series.
- 44:40Philadelphia three and Houston three.
- 44:43Ball one.
- 44:45It has not been a good road trip by any stretch of the imagination for Walter Alston's club.
- 44:50Boy, it would be great to take a pair here today and get a Philadelphia victory over the Dodgers and open up a little daylight.
- 44:58Here's the ground ball, base at center field.
- 45:02So Gary Nolan, after retiring the first 11 batters in this game, gives up a two-out single to Billy Madlock.
- 45:08That extends to Chicago fourth for Rick Mundy.
- 45:14Mundy struck out swinging as a lead-off batter in the second inning.
- 45:28Left-handed batting Rick Mundy at the plate, and it's a called strike on the inside edge.
- 45:35Pointed out the other night, this fellow has a distinction of being the first player ever drafted in the free agent draft back in 1965 out of Arizona State by the Oakland A's.
- 45:46Curve hangs high to him, one and one.
- 45:53Madlock, the first Chicago base runner, he's on it first.
- 45:58Nolan working with a 1-1 pitch to Rick Mundy.
- 46:01Swung on a fly ball right field, Dreesen digging toward the line, coming hard, loses his cap, makes a cut, higher the side.
- 46:10No runs, a hit, no errors, and one man is left on.
- 46:13We're in the middle of the fourth inning at Riverfront Stadium, and the score, Cincinnati nothing, Chicago nothing.
- 46:20There's always got to be an end to the game. There always comes a time when we go our own way.
- 46:34I gave it all I had, but now I am. It's no use losing.
- 46:44Good night, my friends.
- 46:50Now it's time to go my own way.
- 46:55For a beer that's still made the right way.
- 47:00It's a moment every beer lover knows.
- 47:05When you end your day with a straw.
- 47:10From one beer lover to another straw.
- 47:17That was Slobo for the Stroh Brewery Company, Detroit, Michigan.
- 47:20Family brewers for 200 years.
- 47:26The current home stand continues here at Riverfront Stadium.
- 47:28Tomorrow night, the Pirates come to town for night games Monday and Tuesday.
- 47:32The Cardinals here Wednesday and Thursday nights.
- 47:34Stunned by the Reds ticket agency nearest you in Salina, Ohio at the Style Shop.
- 47:39In Fairfield, Ohio at Fairfield Pharmacy.
- 47:41In Muncie, Indiana at Reed Sporting Goods.
- 47:43In Seymour at Montgomery Ward.
- 47:45And in Frankfort, Kentucky at Sears Roebuck.
- 47:48Here's Joe Morgan. Here's Rick Ruschel. And it's too low for a ball.
- 47:52No score. Bottom of the fourth. The Reds have their hammers up in this inning.
- 47:56Morgan with Bench and Perez to follow.
- 47:59Ruschel has been touched for only one hit. That's the Geronimo single in the second.
- 48:03Morgan swings on the curve and does not get it.
- 48:06It's also hit a batter. Rose walked a batter Dreeson has struck out four.
- 48:11Ruschel has gotten off to a good start. As has our own Gary Nolan.
- 48:18Count even to Joe Morgan. A ball, one strike.
- 48:22Ruschel with that casual windup. And Morgan takes a fastball over. One and two.
- 48:31Now San Diego has hit Dave McNally for a big three spot on the top of the first inning up at Jerry Park.
- 48:41Strike three call as Ruschel slides one over on the inside at the letters.
- 48:46Morgan a little bit upset and he's jawing with Doug Harvey as he strolls back to the dugout.
- 48:54Rick Ruschel spotting his pitches extremely well. Giving five strikeouts and bring out Johnny Bench who he struck out on three pitches in the first inning.
- 49:24J.B. Wading swings and misses. Now he's trying to make it a one nothing game with that cut.
- 49:34Game moving rapidly along. Started out as a bona fide pitcher's duel.
- 49:40Strike two. Ruschel has hit a batter.
- 49:44Game moving rapidly along. Started out as a bona fide pitcher's duel. Strike two. Swinging.
- 49:55No balls and two strikes. Ruschel against Bench.
- 50:09Trio pull well over and behind the bag at second base for Johnny. Pitch missing outside and low one and two.
- 50:19LA Philadelphia through one complete no score. Here nothing nothing affair. The bottom of the fourth one down. Bench behind on the count.
- 50:29Pitch on the way and he hits a hard one hopper at Madlock. The third baseman long throwing a high throw but Thornton got up and got down before Bench got there.
- 50:38Two away. Tony Perez struck out swinging in the first.
- 50:50Tony really chomping at the bit the last few days to get back in the lineup after an absence of almost two weeks as a starter.
- 51:02Low and outside the fastball.
- 51:16The 1-0. That's upstairs. Two balls no strikes to Tony Perez.
- 51:24Outfield playing in straight away and deep all the way around. Right now maybe six or seven steps off the warning track and left field.
- 51:353-0 the count.
- 51:45Geronimo who is the only hit for Cincinnati would be up if Perez can keep the inning going. 3-0 pitch and Tony with a green light fouls it off.
- 51:54Dribbler off to the left of home plate. Three and one now.
- 52:01Tony Perez is in some kind of series attendance wise I'll tell you. At 47,340 last night 38,030 on Friday on a near capacity house today. Another foul and it's a full count.
- 52:22Rick Ruschel behind three and nothing to Tony Perez is now getting set to deliver the payoff pitch to the Cincinnati first baseman.
- 52:34Ruschel taking his time. He rocks and he deals. Swung on and fouls straight back upstairs into the red seats. Count stays at three and two.
- 52:52Fire night the Pittsburgh Pirates in. Now the leaders in the National League Eastern Division race. Four more games left on what has so far started out to be a highly successful home stand.
- 53:05Before the Reds go back on the road next weekend against the same Chicago club at Wrigley Field.
- 53:14Ground ball off the end of the bat to first baseman Andy Thornton. He fields goes to the bag to retire Tony and the Reds are out in order in the fourth inning.
- 53:22So at the end of four complete it remains Cincinnati nothing and Chicago nothing.
- 53:28Most likely you know from nothing about banks right. Of course right. Well take it from me you've got a shop for a bank it makes sense.
- 53:36You've got the grocery you're looking for a nice melon what do you do you go through the whole batch sniffing and squeezing until you find just the right one.
- 53:45So you buy a bank the same way buy a bank of course you buy a bank you put your money in it right.
- 53:51So you look for a bank with the kind of services you need you look for security because I ask you where would we all be without a little security now and then.
- 54:01You look for a bank with nice people who know their business and the needs of their customers and you look for a bank with a good solid reputation the bank you can lean on.
- 54:11And have I got a bank for you like a glove that fits your needs. First National Bank of Cincinnati right. Of course right.
- 54:21First National Bank.
- 54:31We'll pause again for station identification on the Cincinnati Reds baseball network.
- 54:39The home of the five thousand dollar button. Cincinnati.
- 54:44Purchase your Cincinnati Reds tickets downtown at 580 Walnut and at the stadium at Burkharts in Kenwood Tri County Beachmont Hyde Park and Northgate and at home federal savings in Western Hills.
- 54:55Double letter here at Riverfront Stadium this afternoon and already we're in the cup fifth inning and a nothing nothing game and Andy Thornton will lead things off against Gary Nolan who retired eleven in a row before giving up the single in the fourth inning to Bill Madlock.
- 55:10They got Thornton looking at a call third strike in the second inning one of three strikeouts for Gary first pitch here in the fifth inning misses a ball.
- 55:21The important look out in trio and the totals in the game up to this point the same for each club no runs one hit.
- 55:30Madlock for Chicago and Geronimo for Cincinnati call strike one and one.
- 55:47Nolan's one one could swung on and lined back up the middle. Gary tried to play it on the line and slipped down out of the seat of his pants in a bid to take away a base hit from Andy Thornton.
- 56:00So make that the second hit for Chicago and the hitter now will be the right fielder Pete LeCocque.
- 56:10LeCocque a fly ball to right his first time up whereas the Reds are 10 over the 500 mark in our division the West.
- 56:17It comes five over at twenty eight and twenty three there a game back of the Pirates and New York really bearing down.
- 56:23They've been playing good ball of late only one out of second and two out of first.
- 56:29Here's a fly ball hit the right field pretty deep recent just shy of the track will make the cut as Thornton halfway down a second moves quickly back in the first.
- 56:42That's the first down in the end and here's Manny Trio.
- 56:46Danny Dreeson getting quite a workout today.
- 56:51That's a six fly ball he's had hit his way and it was trio led off the third inning with a fly ball the right field.
- 56:58Today's scoreboard stumper in 1972 Billy Williams won the batting title with the Cubs who was the last Cub batting champion before Williams.
- 57:07High throw to first not in time.
- 57:12One ball the trio checks in with Irv Noren the third base coach for Chicago.
- 57:21Back on top the mound sites aside from bench throws the first base.
- 57:35All right doing a little housekeeping out on the mound as he readies himself one open swung on and hit in the air the center field.
- 57:45Ronimo coming in a couple of steps he makes a catch two down.
- 57:53Take a wild guess fire.
- 57:56Blue Fox.
- 58:02I'll tell you now that might not be a bad guess.
- 58:05You are the fact that he's here and every now and then they have a tendency to throw questions at the fans in that respect.
- 58:15We'll wait and see.
- 58:17Steve Swisher the hitter with two out.
- 58:20Slow curve is in strike one.
- 58:23Popped out to Tony in the third inning.
- 58:26Born the first base on the strength of the second Cub hit in the game.
- 58:32Dolan lot throwing out to Tony Perez.
- 58:35Thornton gets back.
- 58:37Swisher hitting only one seventy eight.
- 58:41No homers seven RBI call strike two and he has not had a hit in this series.
- 58:46Well that popped out of the third inning he's now been up eight times.
- 58:52And the foreign Pittsburgh the Giants lead the Pirates two to one.
- 58:57Add Hallicky against John Candelaria left hander making his first big league start.
- 59:02Nolan stepping off the pitching rubber as he comes set.
- 59:07Pirates calling Candelaria up after they put Ken Brett on the stable list.
- 59:15How ball down the right field line heading toward the seats and it will be in there.
- 59:24So two strikes and holding on Swisher should he get on it'll bring up the pitcher Rick Rushell.
- 59:34Rose playing deep at third only a few steps off the foul line.
- 59:39Concepcion on the back white line at shortstop for the right handed batter.
- 59:45Another foul ball down beyond the reds dugout and they get into the seats.
- 59:52Count stays two strikes this Wisher with two down on a runner at first base.
- 59:56Nothing nothing to score in case you've just joined us.
- 1:00:00When the Chicago fifth inning of Game 1.
- 1:00:13Nolan ready he bounces one up there that knocks it down out in front of the plate.
- 1:00:20One and two.
- 1:00:31That's carrying three catchers on their 1975 club at this moment.
- 1:00:36We should doing most of the everyday catching but also at Tim Hoseley and George Mitterwald.
- 1:00:41What a ball has been playing some at first base.
- 1:00:45How ball Steve Swisher hanging top Nolan got out in front quickly at two strikes and now he's fouled off three consecutive pitches.
- 1:00:57Not three consecutive pitches the last one was a curve that Gary bounced up there.
- 1:01:08Changed on him and popped him up shallow right center field Morgan is there.
- 1:01:13And the side retired.
- 1:01:15No runs one hit.
- 1:01:17No Cincinnati errors a cub.
- 1:01:19Please.
- 1:01:20At first base and at the end of four and a half the Reds nothing in Chicago.

- 1:03:09When Rose was hit by a pitch and Dreeson got a base on balls but since then nothing in the way of threats for either club.
- 1:03:19Geronimo looks at a strike on the outside edge it's one and one.
- 1:03:29The Reds are finding the hits falling few and far between over the last few games.

- 1:04:39Kansas City at Baltimore.
- 1:04:40Busby against Palmer.
- 1:04:41New York at Chicago.
- 1:04:43Medich against Cotts.
- 1:04:45California hosting Milwaukee.
- 1:04:46Colburn against Figueroa.
- 1:04:48And Detroit at Oakland.
- 1:04:50Jill Coleman against Kenny Holtzman.
- 1:04:55Reds nothing.
- 1:04:56The Chicago Cubs nothing.
- 1:04:57And our fifth with one out.
- 1:05:06David a nine game hitting streak.
- 1:05:08The pitch.
- 1:05:09Pass ball in.
- 1:05:10Strike one.
- 1:05:14Now we quite obviously have gotten Rick Ruschel on one of his better days.
- 1:05:20Swing and a miss.
- 1:05:22He's lost more than he's won this season.
- 1:05:24Five losses compared with four wins and a not so hot for 19 ERA.
- 1:05:29Down a number on us so far.
- 1:05:37Davey fouls this one straight back.
- 1:05:44No balls.
- 1:05:45Two strikes.
- 1:05:46Foster on deck.
- 1:05:53Just inside.
- 1:05:55Concepcion had a notion but held up.
- 1:06:07Ruschel on the way with a one and two and that is low and inside.
- 1:06:11Evens a count of two balls and two strikes.
- 1:06:15Kansas City in Baltimore that game started.
- 1:06:17Royal scoreless in the first inning.
- 1:06:22Now the two to delivery bounce right side the first baseman Thornton scoops it up waves
- 1:06:28Ruschel off the bag to get the out.
- 1:06:31So Geronimo with a fly ball.
- 1:06:33Concepcion a ground out.
- 1:06:35Two out hitter George Foster.
- 1:06:40The 1975 Cincinnati Reds media guide sent two dollars and fifty cents to Cincinnati Reds Department 100 box 1970 Cincinnati.
- 1:07:00Foster thrown out six three his first time up.
- 1:07:04Fall inside to him.
- 1:07:06Concepcion shouting something out toward Ruschel from the Reds dugout.
- 1:07:18Nobody on with two out in the inning.
- 1:07:20Foster out in front two and oh.
- 1:07:27We've seen some outstanding pitching in the last week or so and then primarily from the Reds pitching staff for complete games in the last six tries.
- 1:07:38Gallatin billing and have gone the distance in the first two games in this series.
- 1:07:42Now ball. Reds team ERA as a result down to a season blow of three oh three Mark Anderson commenting earlier today you'd like to see it right around that three mark or maybe just a bit under.
- 1:08:02He feels like with the offensive punch this club has that he can keep that ERA down to around three.
- 1:08:07This team's going to have a very, very successful season.
- 1:08:11Three balls and a strike to Foster.
- 1:08:23Ruschel retiring 10 batters in a row since Toronto's second inning hit pitch away from walking George with two out. Here's a 3 1 that is swung on pop foul coming straight back and down just below us.
- 1:08:41Full count.
- 1:08:55Foster.
- 1:08:57Taking a bit of time getting back in as for his habit.
- 1:09:05Ruschel rocks and delivers three to a swung on and grounded the third madlock has a big convenient hot throws the first side retire.
- 1:09:13Reds are out in order for the third consecutive inning and at the end of five full Cincinnati and the Cubs all locked in at nothing nothing.
- 1:09:25Hello sunshine.
- 1:09:39Hello sunshine.
- 1:10:05Mountain Dew a totally different soft drink with the lemony freshness and color of sunshine.
- 1:10:10Brighten your day with Mountain Dew.
- 1:10:27Here in the sixth inning no score in the game and Gary Nolan will be working against nine one and two Rick Ruschel Don Kessinger and Jose Cardinal.
- 1:10:36Two Chicago hits up to this point a single by Bill Madlock in the fourth inning and a base hit center field by Andy Thornton leading off the fifth.
- 1:10:46While the rest continue to be one hit it by Rick Ruschel that single by Geronimo in the second inning late scores in the American League last night the New York Yankees picking up another victory boy I'll tell you this club smoking only three games out of first in the Eastern Division behind Boston.
- 1:11:05Six three over the White Sox and Bobby Bonds at his 14th home run of the year in that game while in Anaheim California the Angels down Milwaukee five to two.
- 1:11:16Here's Russia all the pitch to him is swung out and fell away.
- 1:11:21Look at a third strike in the third inning.
- 1:11:26Giants leading Pittsburgh two to one of the fifth Dodgers and Phillies no score in the third.
- 1:11:32San Diego three one over Montreal in the second curve is like to call.
- 1:11:42Sun continues to begin and out of the clouds overhead.
- 1:11:47Feel now vast and bright sunlight as Gary Nolan tries to put Rick Ruschel away and swung on a curve hit the left.
- 1:11:56Not play at Concepcion a base that a breaking ball Russia went down and got it loop one of the shallow left field just over the glove of Concepcion.
- 1:12:12So Rick Ruschel helps himself as he opens the sixth inning with a base hit.
- 1:12:18And now in this no score game Don Kessinger steps in and he's looking down to her of Norton who in turn is checking it out with Jim Marshall in the cup dugout.
- 1:12:27What do they want to do here Rose in the third base looking for the button.
- 1:12:32Kessinger still looking that way.
- 1:12:35Backs off checks again he's hit a fly ball to center and he's hit a fly ball to right and two trips.
- 1:12:48So Russia look first base pitch to Kessinger is one down and this bench flopping a throw to first.
- 1:12:56They've absolutely no indication at least on that pitch that he wanted to find.
- 1:13:09Kessinger again checking with Norton.
- 1:13:16Nolan has a sign and there goes Russia ball is funded first base side rolling Nolan picks it up grows the first.
- 1:13:23Perez takes the throw and a sacrifice for Don Kessinger as Jim Marshall had Russia running on the pitch.
- 1:13:31He's on its second base as Kessinger is retired one to three.
- 1:13:41Runner in scoring position for the Chicago Cubs the first time in this game that they can lay claim to that.
- 1:13:48Here's Cardinal who has popped a shortstop and popped out to Morgan.
- 1:13:57Gary Nolan having to bear down for the first time today as he tries to keep the Cubs off the board.
- 1:14:03Pitch on the way to the plate it's too low.
- 1:14:08Between games today we'll be hearing from the East Central High School marching band from Brookville Indiana.
- 1:14:17In game pitches again Clay Kirby against left-hander Jeff Zahn. Call strike one and one.
- 1:14:26Rachel a single a lap to sacrifice by Kessinger. Cubs trying to get on the board.
- 1:14:35Cardinal waiting strike two is called. Nolan out in front one and two.
- 1:14:51Madlock in the on deck circle. Nolan working bouncing ball third base rose up looks
- 1:14:59Russell back to second and throws Cardinal out at first. Two down.
- 1:15:09Here comes Madlock he's had one of the three Chicago hits a single in the fourth inning.
- 1:15:15Did a fly ball to right in the first.
- 1:15:23Gary Nolan two-thirds of the way home for it. Keeping this game and nothing nothing score.
- 1:15:33Russell leading at second base here's a line drive down the left field line that's in for a base hit.
- 1:15:38Here comes Foster they send Russell home the throw to the plate and not in time.
- 1:15:42As bench had to go out in front of the plate to get it.
- 1:15:46Two outs single to left field by Madlock scores Russell as the Cubs fracture the nothing nothing tie
- 1:15:53and Madlock goes to second on the throw hole.
- 1:16:00Thirty-third RBI of the year for Bill Madlock.
- 1:16:07Really looked like the Reds might have had a shot at getting Russell at the plate but bench had to go out in front of the plate
- 1:16:13about five feet to take Foster's throw and Russell as a result was safely sliding.
- 1:16:20Here's Rick Monday with two down and a run in.
- 1:16:24Starts to go looked like he went but third base umpire Dutch Rennert said he didn't.
- 1:16:29Monday has struck out and fly it out.
- 1:16:34A lead off single by Russell a sacrifice and a two out base hit to left by Madlock as it comes up one nothing.
- 1:16:43Outside two balls and no strike.
- 1:16:57Nolan into his motion. Ah ground ball wide at first Perez has it he leads Nolan he steps on the bag and that's it for the Cubs in the sixth inning.
- 1:17:06But they got a run the game first on two hits and leave a man on.
- 1:17:10In the middle of inning number six Chicago one and Cincinnati nothing.
- 1:17:15If it's a big boy you're hungry for.
- 1:17:19Fresh is gonna open their door.
- 1:17:22If it's a big boy it's got to be fresh.
- 1:17:26What has to large beef patties cheese lettuce and our own special sauce and is served with french fries and creamy coleslaw.
- 1:17:34You're right the big boy platter and you'll find it only at.
- 1:17:43Every home something good to eat.
- 1:17:57For when you want.
- 1:18:16Right.

- 1:18:39to plant 30 acres, and $500 in merchandise from landmarks, town and country stores. Why
- 1:18:44not get a group together for Farmers Night? And if you can't attend, send a postcard with
- 1:18:49your name and address to be received before the June 28th drawing. The Farmers Night Riverfront
- 1:18:54Stadium, Cincinnati. Cubs out in front, 1-0 as we come to bat in the sixth inning. Gary
- 1:19:01Nolan will start it off. The Reds relegate it up to this point to only a one-hit roll
- 1:19:08while the Cubs put together a hit, a sacrifice, and a base hit in the top of this inning.
- 1:19:13The run scoring single by Billy Madlock to send them out in front. Nolan struck out swinging
- 1:19:19his only time up, that in the third. Batter and pitcher ready, here it comes, fastball
- 1:19:35inside, ball one. Dodgers and Philadelphia have now played two and a half innings with
- 1:19:41no score in that game. Atlanta, New York, nothing, nothing at the end of one. Strike
- 1:19:48is called to Nolan, one and one. Gary's had the luxury in his last few starts of getting
- 1:19:58a great deal of runs, but gone the other way today against some pretty good pitching by
- 1:20:03the Chicago right-handed. Call strike two. And it's strike three swinging. So, Russell
- 1:20:19has strikeout number six. He'll be facing Pete Rose, who's been hit by a pitch, and
- 1:20:24it bounced out to second base. Russell has now retired 12 hitters in a row. Rose batting
- 1:20:37295 with three homers and 28 runs batted in. Seed up among the top five in the hit category
- 1:20:48in the National League. Foul ball. Garvey leads with 75. Davey Cash bearing down on
- 1:20:54Garvey. Two hits last night to raise his total to 71. Madlock, 67 with the two hits today,
- 1:21:05then Rose with his 65, and Johnny Grubb with 63. Strike two, call. Outside corner and Rose
- 1:21:13in a back off and talk about that one. One-nothing score, Chicago leading in the home sixth inning
- 1:21:31with an out and nobody on. The strike two pits to Pete inside.
- 1:21:53Still maintaining that slow, casual pace, been so successful for him this afternoon.
- 1:22:02Two and two, missing high and outside. Jim Marshall, just a moment ago, sending out a
- 1:22:15side to Mundy in center field, wanting to move a couple of steps more to his right and
- 1:22:20play Pete pretty much straight away. Full count, off-speed pitches high and wide. Three
- 1:22:27and two on Rose. Well, if we get Pete on, maybe something good can happen here. Danny
- 1:22:35Dreesen due up next. Russell with a long look. Now his line and the three-two pitch on the
- 1:22:45way. Swung on and hit hard directly at Thornton at first base. He beats Rose to the back,
- 1:22:51two down. Dreesen has been on one time at a first inning walk, but then grounded out
- 1:22:59to Kessinger in the third on a hard one-hopper. Dreesen beating right-handed pitchers 11 consecutive
- 1:23:19times. Having a hard time here today. Call strike one. Run on four hits for the Cubs,
- 1:23:34no runs, one hit for Cincinnati. Two out on the bottom of the sixth inning. Swung on,
- 1:23:41ground ball first base, then Thornton again scoops it up and gets the bag first to retire
- 1:23:47to the side. Three men up and three men down and through six complete. And a pitchers duel
- 1:23:52in game one of this Sunday afternoon doubleheader, the Cubs won and Cincinnati nothing. The folks

- 1:25:25Andy Thornton first up for the Cubs in the seventh inning and back to call the action
- 1:25:29for you, Joe Nutsol.
- 1:25:30All right, Marty, as you pointed out, a real pitcher's battle here this afternoon. The first
- 1:25:35game, the Cubs have that four hits off Gary Nolan. Andy Thornton has one of the four and
- 1:25:41Nolan delivers a curveball way outside to Thornton the ball. Thornton is struck out,
- 1:25:47was called out in strikes in the second inning and then single the center in the fifth. Cubs
- 1:25:53leading one to nothing. Nolan winds, delivers. Fastball is flung on and grounded to Concepcion.
- 1:26:02In short, he has long throw to Perez, one away. That'll bring Peter Lecoq to the plate.
- 1:26:10He is all for two both times. He's hit fly balls to Dan Dresen in right field. The Cubs
- 1:26:17getting their run in the sixth inning. Rushall scoring the run. He let off the inning with
- 1:26:23a single with sacrifice to second by Kissinger and then after Cardenas, or Cardenaux, grounded
- 1:26:31the rows. He takes inside a ball, Lecoq. Then Maddox singles the left and Foster's throw
- 1:26:39was off the plate. Rushall scored the one run in the ball game. One and no to Concepcion.
- 1:26:45Nolan delivers. Lecoq swings, ground ball. Perez has it at first, waves Nolan away and
- 1:26:51quickly two away here in the seventh. Two down and Manny Trillo steps in, all for two,
- 1:27:02fly ball to right and a fly ball to center. Nolan winds and delivers to Trillo. He takes
- 1:27:17a fast ball to call a strike. The Cubs look like they're trying to setting on Gary's breaking
- 1:27:25stuff at the moment. The 0-1 on the way. Fast ball grounded to Concepcion. Deep and short
- 1:27:32Bob was the ball, picks it up, throws and did not get it. Tony Perez digging the ball
- 1:27:39out to the right of the bag but Trillo hustling down the line, beats the throw and that's
- 1:27:46going to be an arrow charge to Dave Concepcion. First arrow in the ball game. No, a two away
- 1:27:54Trillo at first base and stepping in is the catcher, Steve Swisher. Nolan sets and delivers.
- 1:28:07Swisher swings, ground ball in the hole in the left field, a base hit. Foster up with
- 1:28:12the ball, returns it to the infield and that is hit number five for Chicago off Gary Nolan
- 1:28:18and brings pitcher Rick Ruschel to the plate. Ruschel, one for two, was caught out on strikes
- 1:28:26in the third and then singled in the sixth and scored the one Chicago run. Looking at
- 1:28:36the stolen bases for the Cubs, that's 17 steals and 11 times they have been caught. Harden
- 1:28:46all leads for the 11 of those 17 steals, he's been caught once. All right, Ruschel to play.
- 1:28:53Trillo at second, Swisher at first. Going outside with a fast ball. Gary Nolan, one
- 1:29:00and all. Gary the stretch and delivers that swung on and popped foul behind the plate,
- 1:29:11bench off with a bash coming back and that one drops into the seat. Not even one and
- 1:29:16one. Pedro were balled and the Reds both then loosening up. Well, the Reds is beating right
- 1:29:27handers 11 straight times. Well, you're going to have to get us a couple here soon. First,
- 1:29:34we've got to get Ruschel. Here's the pitch. Fast ball is swung on, hits the left field.
- 1:29:40George Foster moving a bit to his left, pats the glove once and has it and that's it. In
- 1:29:46the inning, no runs, they hit one error. Two runners left on base and at the middle of
- 1:29:50the seventh, the Cubs won, the Reds nothing.
- 1:29:56Josephine, I'm home. Well, it's about time, Napoleon. Say, what are you hiding under your
- 1:30:00coat? Persia? Constantinople? No. A loaf of French bread maybe. What is it? A new toaster.
- 1:30:05A new toaster. We don't need a new toaster. Listen, Josephine, I got it free for opening
- 1:30:10a savings account at the bank across the boulevard and all I had to do was deposit $5,000. You
- 1:30:16call $5,000 for a toaster free Napoleon. Sometimes I think you're short on brains too. You've
- 1:30:22got to look hard for the right bank, one with the services we need, with plenty of security,
- 1:30:27nice people and a good solid reputation. And you want to chuck all that for a new toaster?
- 1:30:33Seemed like a good idea at the time. Yeah, so did Waterloo. At First National Bank of
- 1:30:38Cincinnati, we don't give away toasters or frying pans or premiums of any kind because
- 1:30:43our business is banking. Pure and simple.
- 1:31:00Val Veradge in the seventh inning will send up Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench and Tony Perez.
- 1:31:05It's about time we got on the old board. Rick Ruskell is fixin' an excellent ball game.
- 1:31:11We've had just one hit and that was Geronimo's single in the second inning. And the Chief
- 1:31:17of course cut down on the steal attempt. So really Ruskell, with the help of the throw
- 1:31:24of Steve Swisher to the trio to cut down Geronimo, he's retired their base, I should say, just
- 1:31:3315 men in the last five innings. All right, Joe Morgan at the plate. Joe is
- 1:31:390-2. He's hit a fly ball to the right and has been called out on strikes. And the crowd
- 1:31:45comes alive here at Riverfront. Morgan takes the first pitch from Ruskell, a called strike.
- 1:31:51Ruskell has struck out 6, walked one and has hit a batter. Hitting Rose to lead off the
- 1:31:58game in the first inning and then walked Grecian. That was it as he got Morgan on a fly ball
- 1:32:04to right and then struck out Benchen Perez. Outfield about straight away from Morgan.
- 1:32:12Bill Madlock to third baseman right at the end line. Ruskell's 0-1 delivery. Low and
- 1:32:18inside a breaking ball. County was 1-1. Then just while Freeman to second base in the game,
- 1:32:31Pete Rose got there in the first inning for the Reds. Ruskell got there and scored for
- 1:32:36the Cubs in the sixth. The pitch to Morgan, he swings and misses an off-speed pitch. 1-2.
- 1:32:44Then of course, trio reach second in the top of this inning on an error by Concepcion,
- 1:32:51the single by Swisher. One ball, two strikes to Joe Morgan. Ruskell delivers and Joe swings
- 1:33:00and fouls a slider. Count holding the ball, two strikes. Now they're in the fourth inning
- 1:33:07in Philadelphia, no score. The Dodgers and the Phils. Giants leading Pittsburgh 3-1 in
- 1:33:14the sixth. One Pittsburgh home run by Richie Hebner. Again the 1-2 to Morgan. That's taken
- 1:33:22just off the plate. Ruskell trying to drop the breaking ball on the outside corner. Count
- 1:33:29evens 2-2. Ruskell the 2-2. That's ball three outside and oh, he'd like to get a little
- 1:33:41joy. Full count to Morgan leading off here in the seventh inning, the Cubs leading it
- 1:33:511-0. Ruskell's the payoff. That's ball four outside and we've got something more. Second
- 1:34:03walk issued by Rick Ruskell and that was going to bring activity in the Chicago bullpen.
- 1:34:10We would assume Oscar Zamora, the one of them, and Darryl Knowles the other, and all the
- 1:34:23left-handers are more right-handers as the Reds get their lead off batter on in Joe Morgan.
- 1:34:30Ruskell sets. Bench at the plate. Now a throw over the first and Joe steps back. Morgan
- 1:34:43with 24 stolen bases in 29 attempts. Bench, 0-2. Ruskell again to the belt. Delivers.
- 1:34:53Morgan does not go in the pitches inside the ball. John struck out the first inning and
- 1:34:59grounded to Matlock at third base and the fourth. One ball, no strikes. Ruskell sets.
- 1:35:09Goes again to first base and Morgan is back. That's about the quickest move we've seen
- 1:35:18Ruskell use. We would assume he has a quicker one. We'll see. Morgan with his normal lead.
- 1:35:24Ruskell ready and again a throw over there and this time it is a bit quicker and Morgan
- 1:35:29has to go back hands first. 1-0 to count to John. Bench with 12 home runs and 43 RBI.
- 1:35:41Big day yesterday for Rilley. Ruskell to the belt. Again a throw to first and again Morgan
- 1:35:47is back. Rilley going back again hands first. Time call now as Morgan wants to tidy up just
- 1:35:57a bit down at first. Bob Engel with first base on fire. Bob missed the first two games of the series.
- 1:36:05Engel of course will be behind the plate in the second game of the double header. Ruskell sets now.
- 1:36:11Still looking and now there's a bop right there.
- 1:36:20Ruskell moved his feet before he threw and he certainly bopped. There's no question about that.
- 1:36:27Here comes Jim Marshall, the manager and I think Jim knows that Ruskell has bopped but he probably
- 1:36:35wants to go out and just well maybe settle him down a bit. Let's see. So Morgan draws a bop from
- 1:36:46Rick Ruskell. He's at second base now and there's been just one pitch made to Johnny Bench.
- 1:36:54Don Kessinger at the mound as he lays Pat Ruskell on the right arm and now
- 1:36:59Marshall calls Kessinger back and they're going to keep a good eye on Morgan at second base also.
- 1:37:09Joe has stolen third I think twice this year. Now Kessinger will talk to Manny Trillo.
- 1:37:19He uh Trillo's responsibility. Settle him down a bit. Let's see.
- 1:37:25Let's see. So Morgan draws a bop from Rick Ruskell. He's at second base now and there's
- 1:37:34been just one pitch made to Johnny Bench. Don Kessinger at the mound as he lays Pat
- 1:37:42Ruskell on the right arm and now Marshall calls Kessinger back and they're going to keep a good
- 1:37:49eye on Morgan at second base also. Joe has stolen third I think twice this year.
- 1:37:59Now Kessinger will talk to Manny Trillo.
- 1:38:04The uh Trillo's responsibility I would imagine here to hold Morgan close as Kessinger will be
- 1:38:12playing John well around to the left at shortstop. Trillo is only about 10-12 feet from the second
- 1:38:20base back trying to hold Morgan close. All right. Ruskell ready. He delivers to Bench and John
- 1:38:29swings and grounds at foul over to the Chicago dugout. Count evens one and one. Darrell Knowles and
- 1:38:37then Aster Zamora throwing in the Chicago bullpen and Clay Carroll has started to throw an arp in.
- 1:38:47Ruskell ready and the one-one. Bench swings and hits it deep to left field. Stay fair baseball.
- 1:38:55Go on. Johnny Bench rips one down the left field line and I mean an absolute shot. The Reds lead it 2-1.
- 1:39:15Johnny Bench who's 13th home run of the year gives him 45 RBIs and the Reds lead it 2-1.
- 1:39:23And boy that was an absolute shot. Ruskell trying to get up and in the look like defense but John
- 1:39:31really got the good part of the bat on that one. All right. Ruskell ready to work now to Tony Perez.
- 1:39:37He swings and fouls the fastball. Reds leading it now 2-1.
- 1:39:49The Reds only their second hit of the game off Ruskell.
- 1:39:55On one the count of Perez. Ruskell delivers. Perez swings and pops it foul out of play to the right.
- 1:40:02Ruskell out in front. No balls. Two strikes to Tony. Perez 0-2. He struck out the first inning
- 1:40:10and bounced to threaten at first base in the fourth.
- 1:40:15All right. The 0-2 swung on and missed and that's strike out number seven for Ruskell.
- 1:40:21Two away or make that one out and stepping in is Seysar Geronimo.
- 1:40:27The Chief owns the other hit off Ruskell or the single back in the second inning.
- 1:40:32I feel straight away to Geronimo as Ruskell delivers going inside the ball.
- 1:40:40Second game it'll be a left-hander for the Cubs. Jeff Zahn to the Reds close out the second inning.
- 1:40:49One-oh to Geronimo. He swings and misses a slider in. One and one.
- 1:41:06Johnny Benz 13th home run of the year puts the Reds out in front.
- 1:41:13Morgan at second base when the home run struck. One-one delivery. Swung on and missed again.
- 1:41:19Same pitch, same spot. Ruskell now a ball, two strikes with the Chief.
- 1:41:27Zamora and Noles in the Chicago bullpen.
- 1:41:35All right. The 1-2. That's flowing inside. Blocked by Swisher. Count even.
- 1:41:40Two balls, two strikes. Lake Carroll throwing in the Cincinnati bullpen.
- 1:41:50Merv Retman loosening up and that would mean that Merv will probably go into the game and then
- 1:41:55right field replacing Dan Dreesen. Ruskell's 2-2 on the way. Swung on and missed. Eight strikeouts
- 1:42:04for Rick Ruskell. Rick has made one bad pitch in the game and it cost him two runs.
- 1:42:17Toolway and Dave Concepcion to the plate. Dave has struck out and bounced to first in two times up.
- 1:42:24David hitting a 2-93. It's 2-96 coming in to the first game. A fastball is applied to Concepcion.
- 1:42:361-0. Ruskell delivers. Concepcion swings and misses, making a foul tip into the mid of Swisher. 1-1.
- 1:42:57Pirates in town to Barnight.
- 1:42:59Two games. Series 1-1 delivery. David bluffs the button that cost him strike two, a fastball to
- 1:43:08Denise. 1-2 now to Concepcion. Dave just takes the bat and kind of holds it against his chest.
- 1:43:20I'm not so sure it was.
- 1:43:24All right. The 1-2 on the way. That's swung on. A bounce from Madlock charging a third. He gets
- 1:43:29the running throw away to Thornton and that's it. But in the ending, the Reds go on top with two runs
- 1:43:35on one hit. So with no errors, no one left on base. The end of seven. It's the Reds 2, the Cubs 1.
- 1:43:46Now we've gone through seven. The Cubs are on five hits. No errors. The Reds two runs,
- 1:43:52two hits and one error. For the Cubs, the top of the order. Come to the plate in the eighth inning
- 1:43:59and back with the action. Here's Marty. And as Gary Nolan prepares to work to Don Kessinger to
- 1:44:04start off the Chicago eighth innings, Parky Anderson has double barrel action in his bullpen.
- 1:44:09Left-hander Will McAnany and right-hander Clay Carroll begin to throw. And also a defensive
- 1:44:14change in right field. Murav Rettman has replaced Danny Dreeson, as Joe pointed out,
- 1:44:18with that possibility while the Reds were batting in the seventh. Kessinger 0 for 2 with a sacrifice.
- 1:44:26It was his butt in the sixth inning following Rick Ruschel's single that set up the Cubs' run.
- 1:44:32Madlock delivering a two-out base hit to left field to give them a one-nothing lead and Johnny
- 1:44:36Bench is 13th of the year. The last inning with Morgan on base gives the Reds a one-run edge.
- 1:44:42Here's Kessinger. Here's Nolan. The pitch is swung on and popped up.
- 1:44:45Left side of the Reds infield, Concepcion calling. He has it for out number one.
- 1:44:55So one pitch and one out at a point in the game when you like to see that type of thing happening.
- 1:45:01Jose Cardinal come in play. What he's popped is short, popped to second base,
- 1:45:05and his last time in in the sixth inning was thrown out 5 to 3.
- 1:45:12Foster back-pedaling a couple of steps in left field as Cardinal
- 1:45:15digs in. Nolan five outs away from his fifth consecutive victory. The pitch to Cardinal
- 1:45:24is swung on and fouled. Dodgers and the Phillies are in the bottom of the fifth inning now and
- 1:45:30nothing, nothing in that game. Sutton and Lomborg hooked up in a duel.
- 1:45:39The Reds going into first place last night by four-tenths of a percentage point over the Dodgers
- 1:45:44as they fell four-nothing. The first time that club had been shut out this season.
- 1:45:49Carlton did it holding him to two hits. A breaking ball is away to Cardinal and it's one and one.
- 1:46:00Phil Madlock on deck. Nolan back to the play. Cardinal swings,
- 1:46:04bouncing ball. Rose has it to his lap throwing the first two down. Here's Bill Madlock.
- 1:46:18He has had two of the five Chicago hits including the single that brought in their run in the sixth
- 1:46:23inning. 33rd RBI of the year and batting a very, very impressive 3.30. This young man should be
- 1:46:30a very strong candidate for third base honors in the all-star game coming up next month. Fastball
- 1:46:37high inside.
- 1:46:451-0 pitch. Line shot left center of base hit. And Madlock has his third hit in the game.
- 1:46:53And the inning continues for center fielder Rick Mundy who's 0 for 3.
- 1:46:59Madlock 3-4-4 in this game is now 5 for 12 in the series. Done a good job at the plate.
- 1:47:08Has a couple of runs batted in. The tie and run on for Chicago in the eighth inning with two out.
- 1:47:14Left handed batting Rick Mundy at the plate. Nolan delivers to him and Mundy hits a ground
- 1:47:19ball squiggler to shortstop. David's throw will be the first and the side retires. No runs in the
- 1:47:24Chicago eighth on a hit. A man is left in the middle of the eighth inning. The Reds 2 and the Cubs 1.
- 1:47:35200 years ago Stroh's beer began in a little village in Germany. It was a special beer smoothed
- 1:47:42and mellowed in small batches over a real large barrel. It was a special beer that was
- 1:47:48over a real fire. And because it was brewed in those small batches it was like cooking
- 1:47:53for a few friends instead of an army. People came from miles around to enjoy it.
- 1:48:04Today in America Stroh still brews beer much the same way and it's still a smooth and mellow beer.
- 1:48:11So on our 200th anniversary we took some Stroh's back to Germany. You know what?
- 1:48:19People came from miles around to enjoy it. Golden delicious Stroh still brewed for you by the same

- 1:49:15pitch. George Hitless in two tries has bounced both times to the left side of the infield once
- 1:49:20to Kessinger and once to Madlach. Gary Nolan on deck. Reds have had but two hits but the long
- 1:49:26ball has us out in front two to one. Check swing on a curve in on him and it's strike two. No balls
- 1:49:34in two strikes. While we look ahead to the Cub ninth inning Andy Thornton, Pete Lecock, and Manny
- 1:49:41Trio are the scheduled batters. Foster hitting 276. Ruschel winds and throws and George Line drives
- 1:49:54a base hit to left field. Well we would take an insurance run. And now with that lead-off single
- 1:50:05by Yahtzee look for Gary Nolan to try to get him on to second base. Just a reminder All-Star
- 1:50:13Balloting is underway and continues through July 7th. You can get your official All-Star Ballot at
- 1:50:18Riverfront Stadium, Reds ticket agencies, and at most stores where Gillette products are sold.
- 1:50:22Madlach creeping in, still coming in. Ball is taken up high by Nolan. Well you've got the left
- 1:50:29handed Darrell Noles, you've got the right-hander Oscar Zamora back throwing in the Cub bullpen.
- 1:50:34We've got Foster at first, we've got a two to one lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Nobody out.
- 1:50:42Here's a 1-0. Nolan Buntz first base side and a foul ball.
- 1:50:47One and one.
- 1:51:05Swisher straight up behind the plate now goes to the squad.
- 1:51:08Madlach coming in again. Here's a pitch inside but a check a foul tip into Swisher's mitt makes it
- 1:51:15strike two. A tough break for Gary Nolan and the Reds. That pitch was way in on him. An off-speed
- 1:51:21pitch just did. Nick Vibat and he's behind it. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:51:29Madlach looking into the Cub dugout to find out whether or not he
- 1:51:32wanted to still play for the Buntz, which he is. That ball Buntz first base line and rolls foul
- 1:51:39and again a situation where Nolan was bailing out. That'll go as a strikeout for Rushel.
- 1:51:45One out of the inning and Pete Rose will be at the plate if we go back to the top of the Reds batting.
- 1:51:49One out of the inning and Pete Rose will be at the plate if we go back to the top of the Reds batting.
- 1:52:02He has pitched himself a whale of a game but as Joe pointed out he has made one mistake and that's
- 1:52:07the one that hopefully will make him a loser. Rose has been hit by a pitch and grounded out two times.
- 1:52:14Foster back leading at first base against a holding Andy Thornton.
- 1:52:17Pete looks at a strike away.
- 1:52:34Stretch in the pitch. That misses ball one and strike one. Well Davey Cash has broken the scoreless
- 1:52:42tie in Philadelphia with his first home run of the year with a man on base and the Fills lead
- 1:52:46the Dodgers two to nothing.
- 1:52:55One and one. Rushel with Pete Rose with an out and Foster at first base. Throw to first but not in time.
- 1:53:01Rushel taking his time. One one pitch Foster goes. Swung on fly ball hammered back into left center
- 1:53:18field. Mundy going back to the warning track and makes the catch as he bangs against the wall.
- 1:53:24Now the throw back to the infield Foster trying to get back and does.
- 1:53:28Well I'll tell you now Rose hit that ball a long way into left center field.
- 1:53:34But Mundy left is left the ground at the warning track to come up with it. Foster back in safely
- 1:53:40at first with two out and the batter will be Merv Redmond.
- 1:53:48Merv up for the first time he came on to play right field in the top of the inning.
- 1:53:53Merv Redmond batting and even 200 has no homers and five runs batted in.
- 1:54:01Back to the double yesterday came out as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning and double in the eighth
- 1:54:05off of Oscar Zamora. Call strike one and one.
- 1:54:12There's a one one pitch to Redmond he tried to check his swing and apparently was not able to or at least that pitch was over on the outside corner and he's going to get it.
- 1:54:28Merv down one and two with two down Foster at first and the eight the Reds two and the Cubs one.
- 1:54:50The Cubs one.
- 1:54:56Line drive to left field that's in for a hit. Redmond hit that ball well as Foster moves to second base and holds there and as Morgan comes up we'll pause for station identification on the Reds baseball network.
- 1:55:10The home of the five thousand dollar button WLW Cincinnati tickets for all Cincinnati Reds home dates are on sale before during and after every Reds game at Riverfront Stadium. On your next visit pick up tickets at the advanced ticket window.
- 1:55:24Now with two men on on base hits by Foster and Merv Redmond Joe Morgan is in but he'll have to wait a moment Jim Marshall the Chicago Cubs skipper is on his way to the mound and we will have a pitching change as a left hander Darrell Knowles has gotten the call to come on.
- 1:55:42So we got a break in the action here in the bottom of the eighth change of Chicago pitchers and we'll step out for this message.
- 1:55:50Darrell Knowles the left hander is on now to pitch to Joe Morgan with two men on and two men out and we just got word that Philadelphia added another run in addition to the two runs by Davey Cash's home run they lead the Dodgers three nothing at the end of five complete.
- 1:56:06Knows his one two last two leads his pitching staff and appearances this is twenty first a four oh six earned run average he's working to Morgan with Foster at second right minute first the pitch is high ball one.
- 1:56:22Joe for two but at that big lead off walk in the seventh inning got the balk from Rick Rushel and rode home on Johnny Bench's 13.
- 1:56:39Here's a one oh delivery check swing on a pitch too low at ball to.
- 1:56:43Well they put it on the board here at the end of five full Phillies three Dodgers nothing.
- 1:56:52We could win this game it could be a big day indeed.
- 1:56:57Two to one to score Cincinnati Morgan out in front of the count and he's now ball three and those strikes.
- 1:57:04I tell you Jim Marshall has had a world of trouble with his bullpen in this series he went to a time and again yesterday.
- 1:57:11Eddie Watkin frailing Bobby Locker all had trouble finding the strike zone and now Darryl Knowles in his first appearance has gone three nothing on Morgan with you know who on deck.
- 1:57:25Here's a look at the swisher.
- 1:57:27The pitch that ball for inside and their bases are loaded.
- 1:57:38Now let's see if Marshall will come back and bring on the right handers of more to face Johnny Bench.
- 1:57:47Johnny had the home run in the last inning a line hugger to left.
- 1:57:50Now with 13 and 45 RBI and apparently knows will stay on the pitch the J.B.
- 1:58:02Foster third Rettman second they had it Morgan at first he had a walk.
- 1:58:08That's with two grand slam home runs already this season the pitch.
- 1:58:11Taking high and away a ball.
- 1:58:29The stretch in the pit that's outside and well it's two and nothing to Johnny Bench.
- 1:58:32And those came on after Rettman base hit Russia.
- 1:58:39A walk Morgan on four straight pitches and is two and nothing with Bench.
- 1:58:46Got to come in with a strike pitch and Johnny knows it all too well.
- 1:58:50Former Oakland A's reliever checking in.
- 1:58:53Checking the runners to all delivery.
- 1:58:55That is a strike pitch.
- 1:58:57He kept it down.
- 1:59:02Two and one.
- 1:59:03Play Carol is not growing in the red bullpen but Will Mackinney has not.
- 1:59:13The two one on the way.
- 1:59:15Check swing and strike two and Bench is really upset now.
- 1:59:18He got a little bit bent out of shape over the first call strike.
- 1:59:22But now making his feelings known to the plate umpire Doug Harvey.
- 1:59:26Two balls two strikes two out.
- 1:59:28The bases are loaded for the Reds in the eighth inning.
- 1:59:31We lead by a run.
- 1:59:34Knowles a strike away from ending it.
- 1:59:37Or if you look at it optimistically a strike away from disaster.
- 1:59:42Two to put.
- 1:59:43Swung out and ripped out of the cup dugout.
- 1:59:46Whoa what a shot.
- 1:59:52Fortunately that didn't get anybody but it woke a few people up.
- 2:00:03Two and two it remains.
- 2:00:06I don't know who that is in the corner of the dugout Don.
- 2:00:09I call it.
- 2:00:10He was.
- 2:00:11Looks like Jerry Morales it is.
- 2:00:17Knows cranking it up again two toing to Bench.
- 2:00:20Swing and a miss he struck him out the side retired.
- 2:00:25No runs in the eighth for Cincinnati on two hits three men left.
- 2:00:29And as we go to the ninth inning we got a hole in the Reds two and the Cubs one.
- 2:00:34Top of the ninth inning here at Riverfront Stadium and before Andy Thornton steps in here is a completed pitching line now on Cubs starter Rick Rushley went seven and two thirds innings today gave up only four hits.
- 2:00:48Two runs both earned and both coming on Johnny Bench's seventh inning home run he struck out nine walked to hit a batter and also committed a ball.
- 2:00:56Gary Nolan will be first innings.
- 2:00:59He's a man of three or at least there the schedule batters through eight Nolan has given them that one run in the sixth inning and six base that comes to not have a hit for the first three but it had one hit over the last five innings and two in the sixth inning when they scored their run.
- 2:01:15Andy Thornton is one for three a single leading off the fifth inning.
- 2:01:31Nolan is set to work and Thornton is in.
- 2:01:34Here's a pitch.
- 2:01:36Swung out a bouncing ball left side contender.
- 2:01:39He has a long throw to make and did not get it.
- 2:01:45Now he gave it one heck of a shot.
- 2:01:49He went deep behind the back white line and pull well over toward third base to feel that ground ball and Thornton who has better than average speed for a big man still just did beat the throw.
- 2:02:04So the infield hit to start the night for Chicago.
- 2:02:09They have the tie and run out and here is left handed batting people a cock.
- 2:02:17Two fly balls to right field and is bounced out to Tony.
- 2:02:21See what he's going to do.
- 2:02:22He's swinging away or at least doesn't even blump a button on the first pitch it's outside.
- 2:02:32Comes about at a seven to four but trail two to one.
- 2:02:38Now let's turn our first double play of the game.
- 2:02:42One oh pitch swung on hit in the air shallow right center field Morgan calling for it all the way and he's got it.
- 2:02:53One out.
- 2:02:55It will be many trio to fly balls to the outfield he reached in the seventh on an Arab by conception the only era in this game.
- 2:03:08Phillies are now batting in the bottom of the six.
- 2:03:11Still they lead the Dodgers three nothing.
- 2:03:19The Reds up by one run two to one here in our first game.
- 2:03:28Oscar Zamora walking back down to the cup bullpen as Nolan takes a long look to bench the pitch the trio strike one call.
- 2:03:45Manny checking in with her of Norrin and he thought that first base one out foul ball to the screen it's on to hope you'll stay tuned on most of these same stations immediately following the completion of game number one Joe will be back with red wrap up.
- 2:04:07This one not over yet in the night the 0 2 pitch the trio foul back and out of play.
- 2:04:16Second game pitchers will have played Kirby for Cincinnati.
- 2:04:19He's three and three on the year and left hander Jeff's on for the Dodgers are for the Cubs former Dodger one win and two losses breaking ball outside one and two.
- 2:04:35Nolan taking his time as he walks around the mound Steve Swisher is he on deck batter.
- 2:04:42Manny trio commanding Gary Nolan's attention right now the pitch on the way.
- 2:04:47He'll backing out of this Merve Rettman he has room to play it he's got it to down.
- 2:04:56Dave Swisher scheduled a hit but he has been called back by manager Jim Marshall and champs summers will be the pinch hitter.
- 2:05:05Summers the left handed batter who was a starter in right field yesterday was hit listen four times up will be the pinch hitter with two out of the ninth inning.
- 2:05:21Two men out Thornton leading at first base here is a pitch the summers of all outside.
- 2:05:29Should he get on.
- 2:05:32We'll have another pinch hitter up for the pitcher.
- 2:05:37To a no Adrian Garrett is on deck to bat for.
- 2:05:44Darrell knows but hopefully we won't get there. Nolan behind his summers to and nothing check in and dealing swung out and foul back.
- 2:05:58It is a two to one game Cincinnati here in the ninth inning.
- 2:06:03Johnny bench with a seventh inning home run following a walk to Joe Morgan after the Reds a trail one nothing on one hit.
- 2:06:11The two one delivery that is low and it's three balls of a strike.
- 2:06:16Swung out on a base hit center field Geronimo quickly up with a ball as Thornton takes a turn he'll stay right there.
- 2:06:24And Summers has kept the ninth inning going for Chicago with a pitch single up the middle.
- 2:06:29Adrian Garrett another left handed batter will hit for the pitcher Darrell knows.
- 2:06:34They have Will McEnany come on out and pitch to Garrett.
- 2:06:39Adrian Smokey Garrett Jr. left handed hitter who has some power.
- 2:06:47Been up 19 times this season batting 105 with a home run he hits a ground ball right side Morgan has it.
- 2:06:54Bobbles cannot find it and all hands are safe.
- 2:06:59While Joe had it behind the back white line and simply could not find the handle on it.
- 2:07:05He dropped the ball and rolled between his legs he looked back to find it and by that time no play anywhere.
- 2:07:13So the bases are loaded on Morgan's two out here in the ninth inning and the batter will be Don Kessinger the Chicago shortstop and leadoff hitter.
- 2:07:29Kessinger 0 for 3 has had a sacrifice so now the tie and run at third the go ahead run and champ Summers at second base.
- 2:07:39And all of a sudden things have turned out to be just a little bit sticky here.
- 2:07:43Nolan delivers inside a ball.
- 2:07:51Gordon at third Summers at second Garrett on at first base.
- 2:07:57Nolan really having to bear down dealing the one 0 pitch swung on fly ball left center field Geronimo back and this one belongs to the ref.
- 2:08:09Here in the ninth inning for the Chicago Cubs no run two hits one arrow three left.
- 2:08:17Your final score the Reds 2 the Cubs won in our first game and we'll be back in just a moment.

- 2:09:28Well before this capacity house at Riverfront Stadium Gary Nolan has gotten Don Kessinger on a line drive to Geronimo and center field the Cubs leave him loaded.
- 2:09:38And the Reds have scored a two to one first game victory here this afternoon two runs on four hits to Cincinnati errors with five men left on the Cubs had a run on eight hits no errors and they stranded nine.
- 2:09:50Gary Nolan and winning his fifth consecutive game is now six and three on the year and Rick Rushel who pitched an out of sight ballgame for Chicago but still a loser and a record of four and six.
- 2:10:01The Cubs with a run in the sixth inning but Johnny Bench is 13th homer of the year in the seventh following a Joe Morgan leadoff walk was a blow that won the ballgame for the Reds by a score of two to one.
- 2:10:12Stay tuned.
