- 0:01Well, hey, guys.
- 0:03How's everybody doing?
- 0:05Deadwood, South Dakota, Wild West songwriters festivals.
- 0:09My favorite weekend in Deadwood.
- 0:10I don't
- 0:10know about you guys.
- 0:11But
- 0:12Well, they'll do.
- 0:13Yeah.
- 0:13Yeah.
- 0:34Well, my name is Bubba Starts.
- 0:36I'm joined by Monty and Molly and Bobby Joe Cool on there.
- 0:42I am a songwriter, but I'm also a podcast host.
- 0:45I have a show called The Scene Projects, of which Bobby Joe has been a guest where she's
- 0:49been on talking about not just her music, but an awesome festival that I hope she talks about
- 0:54tonight as well.
- 0:55Molly's a future guest.
- 0:57She just found out.
- 0:59Sure.
- 0:59I'll be in.
- 1:01I'll be in.
- 1:02In fact, you're being a guest now.
- 1:04So I do a show called the songwriter showcase on my program.
- 1:09And it's just this.
- 1:10It's usually me up here interviewing an artist and and sharing it.
- 1:13But this weekend, I asked Jesse if I could record these episodes or record my episodes of
- 1:20just the writer's rounds.
- 1:21So these will be featured on our Roku channel called TripTV plus sometime down the road.
- 1:27I'm not sure exactly when, but you'll be able to find those there and you can find my podcast
- 1:31on YouTube.
- 1:33But I just released a new album or I'm releasing a new album, and you can find that by
- 1:38scanning this code up here.
- 1:39This first song I'm gonna play you is one I got to do with my friend Tom Freer down at his
- 1:44studio in Rapid City called Cottonwood Recording.
- 1:47Diami Drew, who Bobby Joe knows pretty intimately now, is playing bass on it, and
- 1:54Johnny Hastings, who's gonna be playing this weekend as well, played on guitar.
- 1:58This one's called Drift Hood.
- 10:45New ish.
- 10:46Yeah.
- 10:46New ish.
- 10:46Definitely a new recording
- 10:47and a lot of this stuff is new.
- 10:49So I really liked that.
- 10:51I love both of you guys' eyes.
- 10:52Love that one too a lot a lot.
- 10:55You guys are rock stars.
- 11:11Oh, that's super cool.
- 11:12I think I've only actually written, like, two or three songs out here.
- 11:16Yeah.
- 11:16That's awesome.
- 11:17But, yeah, I really enjoy playing around here.
- 11:20So I'm in I'm the lead singer of a band called Cool and the Gangstas, and then I'm in a couple
- 11:24different duos with Tammy Drew who we talked about and Mark Anthony Thompson who's playing
- 11:30down the street and then doing solo stuff with this.
- 11:33So this is my fourth year performing for the Wild West songwriters festival.
- 11:37Super excited.
- 11:39And this is my brand new guitar.
- 11:41I just got it yesterday.
- 11:43Oh, great.
- 11:43It's my first time yeah.
- 11:45I I seen it at about 04:00 yesterday.
- 11:47So Nice.
- 11:49Here's hoping that everything stays in tune.
- 11:52It sounds really good.
- 11:53I really like it a lot.
- 11:54Super excited.
- 11:56Any other words?
- 11:57I think that's it for now.
- 11:59So I am celebrating this song.
- 12:01It just popped up on my Facebook memories.
- 12:03This is the first song I ever wrote.
- 12:05It's called Your Soul is Calling, and it was nine years ago on September 30.
- 12:09So crazy because I didn't know how to play the guitar at that point.
- 12:14That seemed impossible to me.
- 12:16And then I stopped performing with the people who were playing the instruments, and I was
- 12:21like, oh, shit.
- 12:22I gotta sing.
- 12:23How am I gonna sing my songs?
- 12:25They're not at karaoke.
- 12:27So then I started teaching myself the guitar in 2018, and that's slowly been progressing ever
- 12:35since.
- 12:36So this is called Your Souls' Home.
- 16:34Today.
- 16:34Yeah.
- 16:35Well I was gonna wait for tomorrow and then I was like, I got nervous.
- 16:37I was like, yeah, actually I'm gonna play it.
- 16:41Can you talk about the difference?
- 16:43Because mostly, you know, what I have grown accustomed to seeing you was with the duo.
- 16:47Right?
- 16:48Usually, you know,
- 16:49last But
- 16:50playing with Jace.
- 16:51Right?
- 16:51Yes.
- 16:51But you got to come up with my band starts and ends when we played at the Saloon Number 10
- 16:57last summer.
- 16:58That was awesome.
- 16:59Was awesome.
- 17:00And getting to see you perform with a band that night because I kinda just stepped off and let
- 17:04let them kinda lead let you lead them.
- 17:06Right?
- 17:07Yes.
- 17:07And now I see you doing it with some fantastic musicians.
- 17:10Diony is obviously one of the I mean, he's the best bass player that I know.
- 17:14But also the rest of the guys in the band are phenomenal musicians.
- 17:18Can you talk about how cool it is to kind of step from that?
- 17:23Where you're a little limited.
- 17:24Right?
- 17:24You're playing with a, you know, just another guitar player and and singing to now having the
- 17:30whole band behind you.
- 17:31What's that?
- 17:32It's it's amazing.
- 17:34I didn't know how fast my heart would count them because I I have to dance and sing with
- 17:38the songs, and it's so different.
- 17:40I seriously almost passed out when we called mister Wu.
- 17:43It crazy.
- 17:43I'm not kidding.
- 17:45It's like a 100 freaking degrees.
- 17:46I wore jeans.
- 17:47It's stupid.
- 17:49But we had a good time.
- 17:50So Bruce has been inducted into the South Dakota Music Hall of Fame twice.
- 17:54And he's 72 years old.
- 17:55So that's our guitar player.
- 17:57Joe's been our guitar player.
- 17:58We actually have a new or not a different player, drummer.
- 18:00Have a new drummer coming in because he's got kiddos and school and stuff.
- 18:04So we've got Lisa Young who's gonna be stepping in.
- 18:07We'll have a female drummer too.
- 18:09Yeah.
- 18:10It's amazing.
- 18:10I love doing all of it.
- 18:11I love playing for four hours, four and a half hours sometimes with the band.
- 18:16And and then I love doing the duos as well and the solo stuff.
- 18:21So I'm finally working up to getting two hours of my own solo stuff going as well.
- 18:26Yeah.
- 18:27I mean, it's it's fun to do all of it.
- 18:29I did a lot of other stuff and just sang karaoke up until I was 40.
- 18:34And so I just started I'm 44 now.
- 18:36I just started getting paid to play music when I turned 40.
- 18:40And now my son turned 18, so I've got a lot more freedom to do all of this stuff, and I
- 18:47wanna do it all.
- 18:48Awesome.
- 18:49Awesome.
- 18:49I haven't gotten to see the gangsters yet, but I can't wait.
- 18:52I can't wait.
- 18:53I've watched a lot online.
- 18:55I I definitely stalked you on Facebook.
- 18:57Fantastic.
- 19:00Be sure.
- 19:01Thanks for sharing with me.
- 19:02I I don't get to see my friends often enough, so forgive me if I have a little conversation
- 19:06up here and get some stuff out of him.
- 19:09Matt Fockler in the house, we just played around over at Jacob's Gallery.
- 19:13And, yeah, I don't think there's other other people that are playing two rounds a day like I
- 19:18am, but I said I don't know if Jesse loves me or hates me, that I'm getting inspired by this
- 23:50town and the times we have.
- 23:53Like it.
- 23:54Thank you, Michelle.
- 23:55So Monty and I have been playing together for well over a decade, I've lost track of exactly
- 24:01how many years because Actually, I have your pin in my purse.
- 28:58Sweet.
- 29:00Yeah.
- 29:01I was pulling some stuff out of my purse the other day and it flew out.
- 29:04And I was like, oh, oh my god.
- 29:06Yeah.
- 29:07Yeah.
- 29:07It helps when you have a graphic design on in your fans because we get
- 29:27artists up here and songwriters ourselves, but we're all fans of each other.
- 29:30Right?
- 29:30Like, we all have Yes.
- 29:31A sticker or a piece of merch at home of the other artists and, you know, the only shame is
- 29:36that when you're on stage, you're not getting to go and watch your friends play down the
- 29:40street.
- 29:40It is.
- 29:40That's the hardest part.
- 29:42Trying to schedule out where you're to you and how you're gonna fit it all in and it becomes
- 29:48quite a whirlwind of the weekend.
- 29:50That's why I like the locals jam.
- 29:52That's like Back here.
- 29:53Yeah.
- 29:54Tonight.
- 29:54Tonight.
- 29:55It's like my favorite.
- 29:57My big favorite of the whole weekend.
- 29:59Yeah.
- 30:00Molly comes to a lot of my gigs here in Deadwood and super supportive.
- 30:03We're all supportive of each other.
- 30:04And Bubba's always doing awesome things and supporting a lot of musicians as well.
- 30:07Like all over the state and throughout The United States stuff keeps growing growing a lot
- 30:12too.
- 30:13Put a lot of miles on the old Suburban this
- 30:15year.
- 30:16I've been putting a lot of miles on my car, but I also drive for Lyft.
- 30:20So I mean, like, five I know.
- 30:34I just don't wanna do the late night driving either.
- 30:37I wanna play late night music.
- 30:40So maybe I'll drive people off afterwards.
- 30:42So I understand the whole happy song and sad song.
- 30:46So I feel like every songwriter event, most of the people I'm with write more sad songs and I
- 30:52I don't write when I'm sad.
- 30:54Like, I don't do anything.
- 30:55I just lay on the couch and cry.
- 30:57But so I've never been inspired to write a sad song, like, even a heartbreak song.
- 31:03I'm usually like, f them whatever.
- 31:06So I did write a breakup song, my first breakup song, but it's still happy.
- 31:13So I found a way to, like, spin it around and make it cool, you know, for good karma.
- 31:18Because we all learn from relationships, whether we want to or not.
- 31:23I've done a lot of learning.
- 31:27Freaking ridiculous.
- 31:33I think it's gonna stop either.
- 31:35What is it?
- 31:36Women are from Mars, men are from Venus.
- 31:37Some people are from alright.
- 31:42Well, I didn't know if I was gonna play this song, but I feel inspired now that I have to.
- 31:45So I actually wrote this one last year and performed it for the songwriters festival.
- 31:48This is called a new song.
- 35:10But do you have a new song called New Song?
- 35:12I definitely don't have that.
- 35:14I'm gonna write a new
- 35:15song called Lil Song.
- 35:16I love it.
- 35:17I like it.
- 35:18No.
- 35:18I feel like I I I should write more, but especially since I started doing the podcast
- 35:27eighteen months ago, I've spent a lot more a lot of my energy has gone to that.
- 35:31Right?
- 35:31Because I realized when I was releasing new music in February '24 good friend's podcast
- 35:45with them, I tried to be in his studio and I was like, hey, I have that.
- 35:48Hey, I have that.
- 35:50I was like, I got a podcast studio.
- 35:51He's like, most definitely do.
- 35:53You I I'm a a couple of full band shows, but it's it's been much more rewarding for me to
- 36:07support all the other artists around me and then to work on some of the old songs.
- 36:11So I've been like, working with, I mentioned, Cabo recording and working on getting some of
- 36:15these old songs out.
- 36:16Have so many songs that I've written over, you know, like, twenty year career that have never
- 36:20seen the light of day
- 36:21unless you saw me perform it live.
- 36:22Or it's someone who's like, well, maybe we get the old stuff recorded and then we can make
- 36:26some space.
- 36:27Right?
- 36:27We can clear that hard drive and then be able to
- 36:29perform some more.
- 36:30So I need the right one.
- 36:32You're right.
- 36:33And that's why this weekend is so inspiring to me because because I see written everyone
- 36:38coming out over, and like, oh, I
- 36:38just wrote this one.
- 36:39I just wrote this one for, like, three years since
- 36:41I wrote this song.
- 36:42Right?
- 36:42You know?
- 36:42And I should probably get on it.
- 36:44So but I'm gonna play an old one.
- 36:46This one's actually the song that I released in '24, but I wrote it in, 2010.
- 36:51So exactly my point.
- 36:53These songs have been on a shelf for fifteen years and it's time to get them out there.
- 36:57This one's called Triple Fine.
- 36:59It's a happy song.
- 37:00I feel like I I've got a little bit of a downer, which isn't typically my style.
- 37:04So this is a nice little fun kind of poppy rock song, and I really want to thank Molly and
- 37:11Monty and Bobby Joe for for being here with me.
- 37:15It's really nice to share the stage with you guys.
- 37:17I appreciate it.
- 37:17Yeah.
- 37:18I got a big smile on my face when I saw my schedule for this year.
- 37:21And I was like, I'm gonna have a really good time.
- 37:23This is called Triple Fine.
- 39:24Yeah.
- 39:25Anytime you want.
- 39:26You're the one with the studio in the back.
- 39:28Right?
- 39:28We can just sit down.
- 39:29It's in an undisclosed location.
- 39:31Oh.
- 39:31I like that.
- 39:32The mystery.
- 39:33Mine's in my garage.
- 39:36So Monty, should we do our new song?
- 39:39Gotcha.
- 39:40So Monty has been our primary songwriter for lots of years we've been together.
- 39:47And this next song is actually a song that I wrote.
- 39:50And so it's the first time you will do one of my songs, and it's brand brand new.
- 39:54We just started rehearsal a few weeks ago, so we'll see how it goes.
- 39:59Hey, man.
- 39:59How's it be?
- 40:02I'm jazzing forward to it, so let's see how this goes.
- 43:25On.
- 43:26See how fast I can talk.
- 43:28I put on once a year.
- 43:29I'm hoping to have it back up here next year in Deadwood.
- 43:32I had one in Rapid last year.
- 43:33But I've had one in Gold, Colorado.
- 43:35I'm going to expand.
- 43:36So I learned that we are 97% Stardust.
- 43:39And then I learned that human ashes under a high powered microscope look just like
- 43:43stardust.
- 43:43And this song, I write songs really quick.
- 43:47And this one took me, like, six years.
- 43:49My other songs, I have one song I wrote in three minutes.
- 43:51So the fact that this took so long, I feel like it had to have a completion.
- 43:55My father actually passed away in the middle of it, I feel that that's what helps kinda
- 44:00complete it with the stardust aspect.
- 44:03So it's about, like, dreaming big.
- 44:05And I don't believe that we're here to just work nine to five and be slaves or robots in a
- 44:11little bit.
- 44:11We're here to create and music.
- 44:14All of this stuff brings people together.
- 44:16Always artwork, all the beautiful things.
- 44:19So I wrote this in hopes of inspiring others to find their creative side as well.
- 48:11Previous project
- 52:39before wrap this up.
- 52:42You guys don't have to stop.
- 52:43We'll be
- 52:43happy if you wanna just keep playing and playing and playing.
- 52:45Make sure you come on back tonight.
- 52:47Mister Tristan Schofield, who was the winner of the twenty twenty four Wild West songwriters
- 52:52competition portion, He'll be back hosting the jam tonight.
- 52:56You're gonna see all of these songwriters you've seen around town or as many as we can
- 52:59fill up on stage doing a couple of their own songs, jamming together, having a great time.
- 53:04That starts at 08:00 tonight.
- 53:06It's gonna go into well, we get tired, so about after midnight, I suppose.
- 53:10And then come on back here tomorrow, we've got a 01:00 session.
- 53:13The aforementioned Tristan is going
- 53:15to be here.
- 53:16He will be here
- 53:16along with I already forgot.
- 53:18See, I just looked at it.
- 53:20Tyler Mills.
- 53:20Oh, yeah.
- 53:21Tyler is one of our our good buddies around here.
- 53:23Actually, his band, Denizens of the Deep, is playing next weekend for Dead Weird.
- 53:27Make sure
- 53:27you check it out.
- 53:28Really cool dude and
- 53:29a great songwriter.
- 53:30Also joined by a young man who was featured in our Blues Fest that we put on for the first
- 53:34time this past summer, the Deadwood Blues Festival.
- 53:37That's mister Bodie Linde.
- 53:39Bodie Linde is a young man from Rapid City, and I mean young, and wait till you see him.
- 53:43He's not small.
- 53:43He's about six, seven now, but he's an incredible blues aunt, Americana country.
- 53:49You name it, he can play everything.
- 53:50He'll be the third member of tomorrow's 01:00 session here.
- 53:53Check out the full schedule.
- 53:54We've got some on all the tables.
- 53:56We've got
- 53:56a bunch more at the bar if you
- 53:57need them.
- 53:57Make sure that you take care of the staff throughout town as you're out and about today
- 54:01and tomorrow.
- 54:02Make sure you come back and see us, and of course check out everything Deadwood Tobacco
- 54:06related at deadwoodtobacco.com.
- 54:09That's it for the announcements.
- 54:10Now back to more music.
- 54:13Is it three already?
- 54:14Oh, it is three already.
- 54:15Okay.
- 54:16Cool.
- 54:17Awesome.
- 54:17Thank you guys so much.
- 54:18Thanks.
- 54:19It was so great to see you.
- 54:20Appreciate you guys.
- 54:21I'll be playing tomorrow at 12AM at the Franklin.
- 54:25We will be at 11AM at the BFW.
- 54:29We will be doing an entirely different set.
- 54:31Nice.
- 54:31Nice.
