We've talked about mother and father, brother and sister... now let's talk about husband and wife. Luna: Ooh, getting personal! I'm ready. Lucas: So in Amharic, husband is ባል. Say it with me: ባል. Luna: ባል. Lucas: Good. And wife is ሚስት. Try it: ሚስት. Luna: ሚስት. Lucas: Perfect. Now, to ask someone 'do you have a husband?' you say ባል አለህ? For a male, or ባል አለሽ? for a female. Let's stick with the male form for now. ባል አለህ? Luna: ባል አለህ? So that's 'do you have a husband?'. Lucas: Exactly. And to ask 'do you have a wife?' it's ሚስት አለህ? Try that. Luna: ሚስት አለህ? Lucas: Great. Now how would you answer 'I have a husband'? That's ባል አለኝ. Luna: ባል አለኝ. Lucas: And 'I don't have a wife' is ሚስት የለኝም. Luna: ሚስት የለኝም. Oof, that's a mouthful. Lucas: You got it. Let's practice a little dialogue. I'll ask you: ባል አለህ? Luna: I'll say... ባል የለኝም. Wait, is that right? 'I don't have a husband'? Lucas: Almost! ባል የለኝም is correct.
