- 0:00Speaker 1: Joining me in the studio right now is the Lord
- 0:02Speaker 1: Mayor of Darwin convat Scalas.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Good morning to you.
- 0:05Speaker 3: Colled, Good morning Katy. How are you there? You don't
- 0:07Speaker 3: sound very well.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm a big crook, but I'll solder on. I
- 0:10Speaker 2: don't have COVID when I do the same. That's exactly right.
- 0:13Speaker 2: And talking too much has always corn. That's how I
- 0:16Speaker 2: end done with In.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Change with U, Kate, Nothing changing.
- 0:18Speaker 2: With you now. God, let's talk about the scooters.
- 0:22Speaker 1: I understand that there's a there is going to be
- 0:24Speaker 1: an expansion to the scooters.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Well, they want to expand to Casarina, Night Clift, per Up,
- 0:29Speaker 3: Funny Bay districts, which is really good. The government's working
- 0:32Speaker 3: furiously to put new legislation with reguard into scooters because,
- 0:35Speaker 3: believe the or not, scooters are not considered a vehicle,
- 0:37Speaker 3: so they can't be legally on the road. So this
- 0:40Speaker 3: will change the next few months. We have now five
- 0:43Speaker 3: hundred scooters and this stuggering number is that in the
- 0:46Speaker 3: past last year, the people they use the scooters did
- 0:50Speaker 3: one point two million kilometers. Wow, So they must be
- 0:53Speaker 3: popular because I don't think I've done any of these
- 0:56Speaker 3: kilometers myself, but I see a lot of young people
- 0:59Speaker 3: using it and surprising, I've seen a few lawyers coming
- 1:03Speaker 3: down Bennett Street going to these heads on a scudder
- 1:07Speaker 3: with the road flowing and weeks and everything.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Goodness, mate, I know it's it seems to be very
- 1:13Speaker 2: popular that they are certainly very popular.
- 1:15Speaker 1: I know that you and I had spoken in the
- 1:16Speaker 1: past corner about well about I thought there was going
- 1:20Speaker 1: to be a report done into whether there should be
- 1:23Speaker 1: times of the day where they're not able to be
- 1:26Speaker 1: used in the city, you know, when you've got people.
- 1:31Speaker 2: The neuron. Yes.
- 1:32Speaker 3: However, with the government now coming to the game and
- 1:34Speaker 3: changing the legislation, that might be still Actually I will
- 1:38Speaker 3: ask for some of these things to happen, because most
- 1:40Speaker 3: of the times with accident with scutters is late at
- 1:43Speaker 3: night when people had one too many and think they're
- 1:46Speaker 3: superhumans and they are not.
- 1:48Speaker 1: And so is there a way that you could have
- 1:50Speaker 1: you know, there's not really you can't have a breathalyser
- 1:53Speaker 1: or anything on there can I.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Mean, look at the moment they actually if they're on
- 1:58Speaker 3: the road, then you can breathalyze them.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Yeah, you can't breathalyze.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Them, but common sense, and Neuran's quite good because they've
- 2:06Speaker 3: done it in other places like the d In Bridge
- 2:08Speaker 3: in Brisbane, the Ring Ring fence in an area, especially
- 2:13Speaker 3: in the Temin area that you can't use them.
- 2:15Speaker 2: After said, well that's what you've spoken to us.
- 2:17Speaker 3: Vision is what I want to do here. Now I've
- 2:19Speaker 3: got ongoing negotiation with Neurope.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Okay, Now, if you see my producer Danielle, she's in
- 2:23Speaker 1: a moon boot after she stacked the scooter.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Well, the time it was and where it was, it
- 2:30Speaker 2: was about.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Nine o'clock at night. She tells me it was because
- 2:32Speaker 1: she's very hot heels. Yeah, anyway, show me wearing our
- 2:36Speaker 1: heels for a while. Can I give you that tip? Yeah,
- 2:39Speaker 1: moons no scooter for a while. But look, I know
- 2:42Speaker 1: that there are quite a few injuries. There is a
- 2:44Speaker 1: situation obviously, even overnight. I understand that the paramedics located
- 2:49Speaker 1: someone who crashed into a pole about three o'clock this morning.
- 2:53Speaker 3: So cool pole, so he decided to go between them.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Unfortunately it was only one.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a worry in some cases. It's a worry now,
- 3:02Speaker 1: but it does look as well. Nonetheless, Neuron's wanting to
- 3:04Speaker 1: expand them to other areas, which is Look, we.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Can't blame Europeah, we can't blame this goodness is the
- 3:09Speaker 3: people who writes to the idea is all right, sorry
- 3:12Speaker 3: and I mean if you drink the careful what you do, Yeah.
- 3:16Speaker 2: You have to be there is no doubt about that,
- 3:18Speaker 2: No doubt about that. Kine. A few questions from our
- 3:20Speaker 2: listeners this morning.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I have got one firstly wanting to know a little
- 3:24Speaker 1: bit more detail about what work is going on at
- 3:27Speaker 1: the water gardens. So it says, good morning, could you
- 3:30Speaker 1: please ask the Lord mayor why the footbridge at the
- 3:33Speaker 1: back of the water gardens jingly has been closed slash
- 3:36Speaker 1: blocked off and for how long we.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Do regular respection to all our facilities. The recent inspection
- 3:42Speaker 3: we did discover there was rush there to create problem
- 3:44Speaker 3: with the structure of the of the of the bridge,
- 3:47Speaker 3: so we've fenced it until we did thorough investigation to
- 3:50Speaker 3: find out how extensive is the corrosion and we will
- 3:54Speaker 3: repair it. At this stage, I can't give you any
- 3:56Speaker 3: answers because we haven't finalized the whole investigation. We're not
- 4:00Speaker 3: better when we actually know how extend the corrosion.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Okay, so don't know how long that work's going to
- 4:05Speaker 1: take at this point.
- 4:06Speaker 3: But however, today we're opening the Water Gardens all inclusive
- 4:10Speaker 3: playground officially that was designed to actually to be used
- 4:13Speaker 3: by all children, including children with disabilities. And of course
- 4:17Speaker 3: the new playgrounds, the new facilities, the new toilets, the
- 4:23Speaker 3: whole lot which looks absolutely fantastic.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Well, that is good to hear.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Corn. Another question from a listener, could you please ask
- 4:28Speaker 1: Corn about the works along Bayview Pathway? Where is that
- 4:32Speaker 1: project at It appears the polls are too long?
- 4:34Speaker 2: Have mistakes been made?
- 4:37Speaker 3: I Witch pokes.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Bayview Pathway? Is there work happening there?
- 4:43Speaker 3: Yes, there'd be work happening there because actually we had
- 4:46Speaker 3: quite a few inquiries about it. Can I take it
- 4:48Speaker 3: or notice enough count back to you and find out
- 4:50Speaker 3: exactly what's happening and why. The concern of the listener
- 4:54Speaker 3: is yeah.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Right, we'll see what we can find out. Now, Corn,
- 4:56Speaker 1: I'm keen to know. Do you have any understanding or
- 4:59Speaker 1: do you know so why I know the obviously the
- 5:01Speaker 1: main glente had been had been called off this year.
- 5:06Speaker 1: There was going to be a smaller event now that
- 5:09Speaker 1: has also been postponed by the look of things, due
- 5:12Speaker 1: to circumstances beyond control, any idea, what's the guy with
- 5:15Speaker 1: the mini glenty.
- 5:16Speaker 3: I actually met the president, Nick Ponia's last week of
- 5:19Speaker 3: the Great Community, who advised me they had great difficulty
- 5:22Speaker 3: sourcing equipment and sourcing supplies, even some of the generators
- 5:27Speaker 3: that couldn't get them, toilers that couldn't get them. Some
- 5:29Speaker 3: of the food was difficult to get. I mean, this
- 5:31Speaker 3: is a problem with facing now everywhere, especially three in
- 5:34Speaker 3: plays like that too far away from the main centers.
- 5:37Speaker 3: On the way here today, I had another fought from
- 5:39Speaker 3: Nick who told me that actually they look into having
- 5:43Speaker 3: it later. In decision, I would not steal his stundard.
- 5:46Speaker 3: I'll let him announce it because he has to go
- 5:49Speaker 3: to do his process and everything else. But I'm confident
- 5:52Speaker 3: that the Glenty will happen later.
- 5:54Speaker 1: In the drive sho well, it looks like we're going
- 5:56Speaker 1: to have Nick on the show after eleven o'clock this morning,
- 5:58Speaker 1: so hopefully we'll have some further detail about that and
- 6:02Speaker 1: be able to let our listeners know exactly what the
- 6:04Speaker 1: go is, because I know everybody loves the Glendee. No
- 6:06Speaker 1: matter what size the event is, everybody absolutely loves it
- 6:10Speaker 1: and certainly wants to be part of it and to
- 6:12Speaker 1: go and enjoy all the beautiful food.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Now talking about Bayview, yes, you're talking about the sea wall.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Then there's a five hundred thousand dollars expenditure we're doing
- 6:21Speaker 3: in mattenus work and that will take about eight weeks.
- 6:25Speaker 3: We had to supply problem with lights and we have
- 6:29Speaker 3: again supply problem. So the Bayview Walk is going to
- 6:33Speaker 3: be done within eight weeks.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Okay, but there has been a bit of a delay
- 6:37Speaker 1: on it. Part the way.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Well, the problem we've got is you order something yep,
- 6:40Speaker 3: I'm still arriving. Yeah, and of course the same problem
- 6:43Speaker 3: you try to order stuff from Mebay. They promise to
- 6:45Speaker 3: deliver it in five days and then you get an
- 6:47Speaker 3: email says sorry, supply problems you get in three weeks.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Well, let's just shop local. But for some of those
- 6:52Speaker 2: big supplies.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Obviously suppliers, they have the same problem because things coming
- 6:57Speaker 3: from overseas.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Problem at the moment, particularly when you're talking about measles
- 7:01Speaker 1: and things like that.
- 7:03Speaker 2: It makes a huge difference.
- 7:04Speaker 3: And one thing I want to tell youse problems not
- 7:07Speaker 3: only with supplies but with stuff. My friend Evan at
- 7:10Speaker 3: the yos he told me he does not been on
- 7:12Speaker 3: Sunday anymore because he can't find stuff either in the
- 7:15Speaker 3: kitchen or waitressing. Hilton's got problems to services their rooms.
- 7:22Speaker 3: The Crocodile Hotel in Jaburu does not serve dinner anymore.
- 7:25Speaker 1: No, the staffing issue is a massive issue.
- 7:28Speaker 3: And yes, we were approached last year from the city
- 7:33Speaker 3: of den Pasad. They wanted to actually have a relasion
- 7:35Speaker 3: with Dowin and we actually talked to them and they
- 7:38Speaker 3: said to us they want to send students to study
- 7:40Speaker 3: in Darwin in the new campus, which was a great idea.
- 7:44Speaker 3: And also they said, as Ballet's been hit really hard
- 7:46Speaker 3: by lack of tourism, there plenty of people with the
- 7:49Speaker 3: skills in hospitality, they speak good English, they can't get
- 7:52Speaker 3: a job. Is down and interested. I said, he's down interests.
- 7:55Speaker 3: He must be joking. Of course we wanted. So we're
- 7:58Speaker 3: signing now a Eadly city agreement with the city of Tampasa.
- 8:02Speaker 3: We'll be heading down there in a two weeks time.
- 8:06Speaker 3: We take with us a number of people from Darwin
- 8:09Speaker 3: with interest in education and hospitality. They will be paying
- 8:13Speaker 3: their own way and we'll be trying to actually talk
- 8:15Speaker 3: to them about opportunities.
- 8:17Speaker 1: For education, for employement, a delegation heading across to.
- 8:23Speaker 3: It's a very small delegation with a very small expenditure,
- 8:27Speaker 3: but if we can pull that through, the benefits for.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Dow will be announce How soon are you expecting that
- 8:32Speaker 1: we could see some of those employees or some of
- 8:36Speaker 1: those workers coming across to the Northern Territory.
- 8:38Speaker 3: You're taking people who have to expend to them exactly
- 8:40Speaker 3: how they can get the visits, how they can actually
- 8:42Speaker 3: get employment here, how can they study here? So the
- 8:45Speaker 3: moment we give all this information of them, it will
- 8:47Speaker 3: be very easy, considering the lack of working hands here
- 8:51Speaker 3: to actually with the federal government, and will be lobbying
- 8:53Speaker 3: the federal government to accelerate this process so we can
- 8:56Speaker 3: get some people as soon as possible. Well, we haven't
- 8:58Speaker 3: got any backpackers.
- 9:00Speaker 2: No, we don't. This is the issue issue.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Yeah, it's hard. It's very hard for a lot of
- 9:04Speaker 1: businesses at the moment. Combat scarlets. We will leave it there.
- 9:07Speaker 1: We'll catch up with you again next week. Thanks so
- 9:08Speaker 1: much for your time.
- 9:09Speaker 2: As always, get better and you might get a call
- 9:11Speaker 2: you pay for it. I'm only kidding, No, Thanks God
