Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up.
- 0:00Speaker 2: We're three guys from hal Mulligan and we are really
- 0:04Speaker 2: soaked to come back to Australia and April for the
- 0:07Speaker 2: sound of body makes when it's still world tour.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Come guys, Hello.
- 0:12Speaker 3: Hi, good, good, good, so hot Mulligan. We've got sorry
- 0:17Speaker 3: is it.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Jonah and Ryan?
- 0:20Speaker 4: Yes?
- 0:20Speaker 3: And also Chris is it I'm tens he's hiding.
- 0:29Speaker 5: No, Yes, that is Oh.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I was reading that.
- 0:33Speaker 3: I'm just like, I haven't got my glasses and yeah,
- 0:35Speaker 3: I'm like, that doesn't look like a name. There's definitely
- 0:38Speaker 3: very metal though, So welcome. I hear you guys are
- 0:43Speaker 3: coming back down Under very soon. Yeah, yeah, yeah in April.
- 0:50Speaker 3: So you guys, Dad your big debut back in only
- 0:55Speaker 3: twenty four?
- 0:56Speaker 1: Was it?
- 0:56Speaker 3: If I remember correctly, that sounds great. Yeah, hit the
- 1:00Speaker 3: ground running, start to speak. So tell me a little
- 1:04Speaker 3: bit about that old how that's being for yourselves and
- 1:08Speaker 3: experiences and yeah, obviously first time you when you come
- 1:12Speaker 3: to Dunder and everything up until now.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Well we had a great time, uh last and first
- 1:20Speaker 2: time we came over. I think it was something that
- 1:24Speaker 2: none of us really knew what to expect, Like we
- 1:26Speaker 2: all kind of went in a little blindly, just in
- 1:31Speaker 2: terms of like, uh, it's like the furthest point across
- 1:35Speaker 2: the world that you can possibly get from like where
- 1:37Speaker 2: we live.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Isn't it.
- 1:40Speaker 3: I'm assuming you got yeah, the ace carst as well,
- 1:43Speaker 3: which probably might sit even longer.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Again.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Yeah, so yeah, I think that was just one of
- 1:50Speaker 2: those things where you know, you kind of go in
- 1:52Speaker 2: and just uh, I just trust the process, if you will,
- 1:57Speaker 2: and like just go play some shows and see what happens.
- 1:59Speaker 2: And I would say that it turned out better than
- 2:02Speaker 2: any of us expected show wise, and just general being
- 2:08Speaker 2: over there as nice, like we all found the weather
- 2:11Speaker 2: to be awesome.
- 2:12Speaker 3: And yeah, especially coming at NIME in April, it's not
- 2:16Speaker 3: not too hot. It's still warm enough to be absolutely
- 2:19Speaker 3: enjoying just before the winter kicks in.
- 2:21Speaker 1: So good time.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Yeah, not that there's really went out here, like especially
- 2:26Speaker 3: where I leave, it's you know, usually barbie twenty something
- 2:29Speaker 3: degree the Celsius.
- 2:33Speaker 5: I'll take it.
- 2:33Speaker 1: We're very spoiled. I think. Oh, someone was saying, is it.
- 2:38Speaker 3: California like around there, like that's very similar to like
- 2:42Speaker 3: our climate.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, I remember that correctly.
- 2:49Speaker 3: So yeah, so, as I said, we hit the ground
- 2:52Speaker 3: running obviously, you're from backgrounds of music prior to coming
- 2:57Speaker 3: together as Hoot Mulligan, So tell me a bit about that.
- 3:01Speaker 3: What was what you guys doing retrospectively individually before we
- 3:05Speaker 3: joined forces?
- 3:08Speaker 5: Gods, nothing, you just well, me and Chris were both
- 3:17Speaker 5: in like the IY bands.
- 3:19Speaker 6: But yeah, that's like local stuff, local to the point
- 3:24Speaker 6: that it doesn't really count. Like the first time any
- 3:30Speaker 6: real effort put forth into writing stuff was when we
- 3:34Speaker 6: started Hot Mulligan.
- 3:36Speaker 5: Fucking years and years ago.
- 3:38Speaker 6: Now, yeah, the I mean, what what uses my voice
- 3:44Speaker 6: in fucking choir in high school?
- 3:46Speaker 1: You know?
- 3:47Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 3:47Speaker 3: So when did you guys actually come together to for
- 3:50Speaker 3: mont Muga and how long have you been doing that
- 3:52Speaker 3: together for now?
- 3:56Speaker 5: I don't.
- 3:58Speaker 6: I mean, it's probably a year before we did pilot
- 4:00Speaker 6: because we were we were just like done because he
- 4:02Speaker 6: was going to college.
- 4:04Speaker 5: So well, like eleven years or not a pilot.
- 4:09Speaker 6: I've been in the band for ten years, you have,
- 4:13Speaker 6: I have, yes, Jesus Christ, We're probably gone for a few.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Before that, for a minute, so to speak. It's not
- 4:19Speaker 1: yea for a long thanks.
- 4:21Speaker 3: To the algorithms. So obviously that time you built up
- 4:24Speaker 3: your fan base. How have you found that for self?
- 4:27Speaker 1: Spee.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Has it been something that's growing gradually or you had
- 4:31Speaker 3: like a cult following, you know, from the beginning that's
- 4:33Speaker 3: spread out into the masters or what's it?
- 4:37Speaker 1: What's that being like for yourselves?
- 4:39Speaker 6: Gradual at first, for sure, the very very natural growth.
- 4:47Speaker 6: For the first while when we were doing this, it
- 4:50Speaker 6: was putting out an album during COVID that did the
- 4:55Speaker 6: trick for us.
- 4:56Speaker 5: For some reason.
- 4:58Speaker 6: Yeah, that seemed to you kill bands or make them
- 5:02Speaker 6: and we were shut out for some reason.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I know, that's great.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I definitely have spoken to a few groups and
- 5:08Speaker 3: notists that have had the same success. They've don't used
- 5:11Speaker 3: COVID and that you say it came to their advantage.
- 5:14Speaker 3: And those that I guess we're already established that we're
- 5:18Speaker 3: able to move with the times and make that work
- 5:20Speaker 3: for them were the ones that you know, succeeded through it.
- 5:23Speaker 3: And we've certainly seen a few of those out that were, Yeah.
- 5:28Speaker 6: Use COVID as a pretty insane way to put it.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Yeah, why not?
- 5:32Speaker 1: They take the bullshit by the lawns and make it
- 5:35Speaker 1: work for you.
- 5:36Speaker 3: That's the that's the memento that we'd like to take
- 5:39Speaker 3: on over here.
- 5:41Speaker 6: Yeah, use use uh.
- 5:45Speaker 5: Like mass death events to promote your music.
- 5:49Speaker 3: I'm thinking not so more, but I'm thinking, like you
- 5:50Speaker 3: know that, you know, working at home and being on
- 5:53Speaker 3: the lockdown and using your time constructively rather.
- 5:57Speaker 5: Ah yeah, yeah, yeah, okay.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Okay, sorry, I'm speaking to a box.
- 6:01Speaker 1: It's hard to tell me who's talking at the moment.
- 6:04Speaker 1: It's just gets very weird.
- 6:07Speaker 3: There's a little brain light goes on and off, so
- 6:09Speaker 3: that's how I can tell.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Yeah, that's yeah. Well, you know, if you want to
- 6:13Speaker 1: take that the mord approach, it's always good for the
- 6:17Speaker 1: shop factor.
- 6:18Speaker 3: But yeah, definitely using your time constructively, which she guys
- 6:22Speaker 3: should certainly have done. So coming back down, I know,
- 6:26Speaker 3: what was your experience last time you were here?
- 6:28Speaker 1: So that was back in twenty four, was that right? Yes? Yeah,
- 6:32Speaker 1: and how is that?
- 6:34Speaker 2: I thought it was great. It was one of those
- 6:37Speaker 2: things where you go somewhere for the first time, so
- 6:40Speaker 2: you have to take a step down in terms of
- 6:43Speaker 2: like the venues you're playing in the production.
- 6:45Speaker 5: Sure, but we really like that that sort of stuff.
- 6:51Speaker 2: We kind of thrive on small shows with no barricade,
- 6:56Speaker 2: especially coming off of like larger tours, and it's a
- 7:00Speaker 2: good way to shake it up. So we had a
- 7:03Speaker 2: great time doing that. And uh now the second time around,
- 7:06Speaker 2: you know, the venues are a little nicer and a
- 7:08Speaker 2: little bigger. We're selling more tickets.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Yeah, and how many shows are you doing?
- 7:15Speaker 2: That's a really good question that I don't have right
- 7:18Speaker 2: off hand.
- 7:19Speaker 5: I think it's six shows.
- 7:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I read Melbourne's Go nextra show as well.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, we added a second one for the first
- 7:30Speaker 4: one sold out.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Oh that's all. That's encouraging. That's definitely good. Good year.
- 7:35Speaker 3: It must make it exciting. So any plans to hang
- 7:38Speaker 3: around when you're down here or just going to do
- 7:40Speaker 3: your thing and then you've got a busy schedule afterwards,
- 7:43Speaker 3: what's the what's the rest of twenty six look quite
- 7:45Speaker 3: for you guys?
- 7:47Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 7:48Speaker 4: We go straight from the end of our shows in Australia,
- 7:53Speaker 4: we go from there to Singapore for one show, and
- 7:57Speaker 4: then we're doing our first tour in Japan.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Ah, that's gonna be interesting. They yeah, and they look
- 8:05Speaker 3: in hard. They they certainly get right in amongst it
- 8:09Speaker 3: with their metal.
- 8:10Speaker 1: It's that'll be good. I get you guys looking forward
- 8:12Speaker 1: to that.
- 8:13Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, yeah, And so where like with your fan base,
- 8:17Speaker 3: where does it sort of stem from most Obviously, you know,
- 8:20Speaker 3: back home, you've got a good following, But in terms
- 8:23Speaker 3: of the rest of the world, where do you see
- 8:25Speaker 3: most of your fans coming from.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Well, it's kind of a hard question to answer, just
- 8:31Speaker 2: because we haven't had the chance to play everywhere, you know,
- 8:36Speaker 2: but I think outside of the US, the next like
- 8:40Speaker 2: most successful place for us to put on a show
- 8:42Speaker 2: would be London.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Okay, wow, Okay, that's that's interesting.
- 8:47Speaker 3: It's certainly not what so usually you know, maybe Europe,
- 8:50Speaker 3: parts of Asia or not, Australias always a good one,
- 8:53Speaker 3: but London. So they've really the Brits have really taken
- 8:56Speaker 3: a liking to yourselves.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Uh yeah, I mean at least in in their most
- 9:01Speaker 2: major city, you know. Yeah, I think probably the most
- 9:04Speaker 2: amount of tickets we've sold in a city outside of
- 9:07Speaker 2: the US so far has been London. And like I
- 9:11Speaker 2: think we all have fun like playing in you know,
- 9:14Speaker 2: any country or any scenario we're put in, like mainland
- 9:17Speaker 2: Europe is really fun. We just got back from doing
- 9:19Speaker 2: a couple of weeks over there. But those shows, you know,
- 9:24Speaker 2: the fans are just as passionate. But I wouldn't say
- 9:26Speaker 2: that there are as many as there might be you
- 9:29Speaker 2: know back home or in the UK. Yeah, excited to
- 9:33Speaker 2: see how the turnout is in Japan because yeah, well
- 9:37Speaker 2: I've been asking us to go there for a while now.
- 9:39Speaker 3: So oh that's it's a good if you've events to
- 9:42Speaker 3: the cold. Yeah, I feel like you'll get a good
- 9:49Speaker 3: response in good turnout because they are they certainly lucky
- 9:52Speaker 3: and hard. As I said, so, how would you describe
- 9:55Speaker 3: yourselves in a music wise? What would you Everyone gets
- 9:58Speaker 3: you know labeled he there and everyone way, but what
- 10:00Speaker 3: would yourselves?
- 10:01Speaker 1: Let's describe your music.
- 10:02Speaker 6: As basically it's uh, if you mixed what did we
- 10:14Speaker 6: say in the previous interview.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Metallica and Metallica and what was the other one?
- 10:22Speaker 5: And crash test dummies, Yeah, if you.
- 10:27Speaker 6: Crash test dummies like a touch of red hot chili peppers.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Wearing the show. It was literally the best one I
- 10:36Speaker 1: grabbed out of my drill.
- 10:42Speaker 3: Might have some serious hardcore funk and some metal metal.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Vibes and some any one are the vocals like we
- 10:50Speaker 1: go to any screaming happening.
- 10:52Speaker 5: Now just moaning, I'm a screaming of.
- 11:01Speaker 1: As long as you're singing Capitol letters, it's a good excellent, excellent.
- 11:06Speaker 3: So yeah, you guys here in April, which is in
- 11:08Speaker 3: a couple of weeks. I think it is that you
- 11:10Speaker 3: guys are coming out, so yeah, and then we'll be
- 11:14Speaker 3: able to see yourself in the flash and see what
- 11:17Speaker 3: you're doing.
- 11:17Speaker 1: So excellent,
