- 0:01For the individual living, on the surface of his being
- 0:05interacting with the external World, responding to impulsions
- 0:10pressures forces, and the objects of Desire.
- 0:15Is inner experience, is essentially a reaction to these
- 0:19external pressures and an attempt to meet the desires that
- 0:24arise and somehow enjoy one's life.
- 0:29When he succeeds in obtaining some object of desire, he
- 0:33experiences a short-lived sense of happiness or joy.
- 0:38When things do not work out as he hopes, he may go through
- 0:42experiences of anger, frustration, or depression.
- 0:48Everything revolves around how the external being perceives
- 0:51itself to be succeeding in the outer life, and the goals he has
- 0:56set before himself in that life. There is no real attempt to
- 1:01harmonize all actions and reactions.
- 1:04All thoughts and feelings all drives and desires around any
- 1:08Central unifying intention generally.
- 1:13The individual, simply accepts this amalgam as who he is.
- 1:19And accepts that this is the way things need to be.
- 1:24To the extent that an individual fixates on some specific
- 1:27purpose, that requires extensive concentration, such as mastering
- 1:33a sport at the world-class level or examining some deep
- 1:37scientific or mathematical concept.
- 1:40Or mastering the composition or performance of Music, there may
- 1:45be a temporary seeming Harmony that allows the focus to
- 1:50succeed. But we quickly see that once the
- 1:54immediate object of concentration has been achieved
- 1:58the same confused and confusing assortment of desires, thoughts
- 2:03emotions, Etc. Arise once again, we can see
- 2:08this in the life of certain great artists or composers, such
- 2:13as Beethoven Mozart Van Gogh, who each had serious
- 2:18difficulties due to the vital nature and its ability to
- 2:22fulfill its desires, as well as subsequent issues, with physical
- 2:27illnesses, and mental instability, in some cases, SRI
- 2:33aurobindo observes quote to the ordinary man who lives upon his
- 2:38own waking surface, ignorant of the selfs depth, and vastness
- 2:42has behind the veil. His psychological existence is
- 2:46fairly simple, a small, but clamorous company of desires,
- 2:52some imperative, intellectual, and aesthetic Cravings.
- 2:56Some tastes a few ruling or prominent ideas amid a great
- 3:01current of Connected or ill connected, and mostly trivial
- 3:05thoughts, a number of more or less imperative vital needs,
- 3:11alternations of physical health, and disease a scattered.
- 3:15And in consequence accession of Joys and griefs frequent minor,
- 3:21disturbances, and vicissitudes and rare strong searchings and
- 3:26upheavals of mind or body. And through it all nature,
- 3:32partly with the aid of his thought and will partly without
- 3:36or in spite of it, arranging these things in some rough
- 3:40practical fashion, some tolerable disorderly order.
