- 0:00Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:02daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:05from social media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:09Every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth media brand Centennial World.
- 0:16Welcome back, everyone. Happy Monday.
- 0:20It was Coachella weekend one this weekend, so I am sure that
- 0:25your social media feeds your TikTok for you page was just
- 0:28filled with stuff from Coachella.
- 0:31I have two Coachella related stories, which is a little
- 0:34surprising because prior to this weekend it seemed like Coachella
- 0:40was really just an afterthought, like it was not something that
- 0:43anybody was talking about. I mean, we've had many
- 0:45conversations over the last two years that the festival feels
- 0:49like it's losing a lot of relevance.
- 0:51But I would say that social media proved us wrong, at least
- 0:55for weekend one. So let's just jump right into it
- 0:58because I have 3 pretty big stories for you guys today.
- 1:01So the first story is that there is a little bit of Coachella
- 1:03drama with the brand Buy Bambi. Australian clothing brand Buy
- 1:07Bambi is facing backlash for their brand trip to Coachella.
- 1:11For those who are not familiar with Buy Bambi, it is a small
- 1:14ethical clothing brand based in Melbourne.
- 1:17It was launched in 2018 and has since gained A cult following on
- 1:20TikTok for its unique take on trends.
- 1:23So the reason why I'm covering this for anyone that doesn't
- 1:25know, I'm actually based in Australia in Sydney, although I
- 1:28am Canadian. And I'm sorry for all of our
- 1:30Australian listeners, but I just cannot say Melbourne like
- 1:33Melbourne, because to me that is how you say it with an
- 1:36Australian accent. And I'm not just gonna like, put
- 1:38on an Australian accent to say one word.
- 1:41I just feel like it's really cringe when I hear people who
- 1:43have North American accents or any other type of accents, say
- 1:46Melbourne, Because to me, that's how you say it, like in
- 1:49Australia. And if that makes sense, so I'm
- 1:51going to be saying Melbourne, I'm really sorry.
- 1:53So over the years, the brand has worked quite closely with a
- 1:55creator named Yasmin, A TikTok creator with over 135,000
- 1:59followers. Yasmin is known for her
- 2:01lifestyle content, specifically her outfit videos.
- 2:04And get ready with me. While Yasmin has worked with the
- 2:07brand, she is also supported by Bambi long before she started
- 2:11collaborating with them. Yasmin has since become a
- 2:13favorite of the Bye Bambi team, with the creator hosting the
- 2:17brand's fifth anniversary party and even starring in the
- 2:20campaign for this milestone. This year, the brand took a
- 2:24number of influencers to LA for Coachella, even flying some tik
- 2:28tokers out from Australia. However, it seems the brand did
- 2:32not invite Yasmin TikTok users have since rallied around the
- 2:35creator, criticizing by Bambi for excluding someone who has
- 2:38long promoted and praised the brand where she was even the
- 2:41face of the company. At one point under the comments
- 2:44section of every video posted by the brand of this influencer,
- 2:47Trip users are asking about Yasmin and others are
- 2:51criticizing the clothing label for the lack of diversity on
- 2:54this trip. Quote I only know by Bambi
- 2:56because of Yasmin 1 user commented quote TBH, I won't be
- 3:00buying by Bambi again after this treatment of Yasmin, wrote
- 3:03another. Yasmin did post a video
- 3:06addressing the brand trip, but it has since been deleted.
- 3:09In the comment section of another video, Yasmin said that
- 3:11she was quote asked to take it down for contractual reasons
- 3:15slash the potential of legal action.
- 3:17When asked if the brand apologized, she said Nope.
- 3:21Nevertheless, she has posted a number of videos subtly
- 3:24criticizing the brand. In one, she was lip syncing to
- 3:27Lady Gaga's Judas, insinuating that by Bambi has betrayed her.
- 3:31Overall, this whole situation is an interesting example of what
- 3:35actually matters to TikTok users.
- 3:37As TikTok user at Sweep under score Studio says Quote, this
- 3:41drama is such a good case study to show that your brand is so
- 3:44much more than the products you are selling.
- 3:45The way this brand's community is standing up for this one
- 3:48creator really shows that your brand community doesn't just
- 3:51care about your brand, it cares about each other as well.
- 3:56I completely agree. And I think that's the number
- 3:58one thing that I have seen on TikTok from this is everybody's
- 4:01like, I discovered by Bambi through Yasmin, like this is so
- 4:04wild that you wouldn't invite her.
- 4:06So I can imagine that she would feel quite slighted and I think
- 4:09that's fair enough. You know, brand trips have been
- 4:11a huge hot topic ever since the Tart Dubai trip went viral at
- 4:16the beginning of last year. I mean we saw brand trips for
- 4:19years and years and then they kind of fell off.
- 4:22Like I think it seemed as though brands decided that they weren't
- 4:25really the move when it came to influencer marketing.
- 4:27And then of course the pandemic happened and then last year they
- 4:30came back full for us when Tart was like, you know what we're
- 4:32going to do like a 20/16/2017 style brand trip to Dubai.
- 4:36And ever since then it feels like brands are really back on
- 4:38it. So we're watching brand trips
- 4:40with a much closer eye than we used to.
- 4:43And the next story I have for you guys is also about a
- 4:46Coachella brand trip, but this time it's actually quite
- 4:48positive. So Poppy, the soda brand, is
- 4:52doing a brand trip to Coachella. They've hired a house.
- 4:54They're doing the whole activation.
- 4:56But instead of inviting a whole slew of influencers to the trip,
- 4:59they have invited just one Alex Earl.
- 5:02And she got to bring a bunch of her friends to this house.
- 5:06Poppy is a soda brand founded by a husband and wife duo and is a
- 5:09healthier alternative to other drinks.
- 5:12After getting investment through the TV show Shark Tank, Poppy
- 5:15has become a favorite online this year.
- 5:18Instead of inviting a group of influencers to Coachella, Poppy
- 5:21has capitalized on the Alex Earl effect and just invited Alex and
- 5:24her friends to the festival. They have even branded the trip
- 5:28as Coach Orla for Alex Earl, Her sister Ashton.
- 5:33Her best friends Kristen and Sally are on the trip with Alex.
- 5:36The group are staying across the street from the festival in a
- 5:39house decked out in Poppy merch and drinks.
- 5:41Poppy's decision to go all in on one influencer is not a common
- 5:45strategy, but it seems to be working in the brand's favor as
- 5:48TikTok users are loving Alex's content from the weekend.
- 5:52Social media users have become really sick of Coachella in
- 5:55recent years, particularly due to it becoming, you know, kind
- 5:58of the quote UN quote influencer Olympics, where many creators
- 6:01show little interest in the festival itself or its music.
- 6:04So focusing on just Alex and her friends seems like a smart move
- 6:08by Poppy as it reintroduces an element of authenticity and fun
- 6:12to the event. And Alex is the perfect
- 6:14influencer to trial this type of thing because all of her friends
- 6:18and her sister and her family, they star in her videos as well.
- 6:21So even though they might not necessarily be big influencers,
- 6:25seeing that dynamic, it's almost like they're giving us a reality
- 6:28show with the people that we know from Alex's life for this
- 6:32one weekend all together in this house.
- 6:34So I think that's part of why it works.
- 6:35I don't think that they would have chosen an influencer who
- 6:38doesn't share her friends and her family and all of those
- 6:42aspects of her life to do this like one trip with.
- 6:46Because that's the fun of it is like her content is all about
- 6:49having fun and partying with these people that we see in her
- 6:52life. And she's also a massive music
- 6:55festival buff. Like Alex is a huge party girl
- 6:58and she loves music and she loves going to festivals and
- 7:00shows and concerts. So it's actually like the
- 7:03perfect marriage between these things to have created this
- 7:07really fun weekend for users to follow along with and for Alex
- 7:12and her friends to engage with. And it's a very unique strategy.
- 7:15And I think it really shows that Poppy's on the front foot of
- 7:18changing things up for influencer marketing.
- 7:20You know, like influencer marketing, we're so numb to it
- 7:22now. We kind of know all the tricks
- 7:24of the trade and it's not as effective as it used to be on
- 7:27us. And this has been so effective.
- 7:30Everyone is talking about it because it's so different.
- 7:32All right. And the last ride that I have
- 7:34for you guys, there is some big drama going on with the Trade Me
- 7:39project that happened on TikTok. So I will go through what that
- 7:44is if you have no idea, and then I'll tell you what's going on
- 7:47now. So in 2021, a TikTok user named
- 7:50Demi Skipper went viral after she did a series of trades.
- 7:55So it started with a lone Bobby pin and ended up with a house.
- 7:59She basically traded 28 items in total, including an Apple TV for
- 8:04noise canceling headphones and an iPhone 11 Pro Max for a 2008
- 8:09Dodge Caravan. Soon, many TikTok users started
- 8:12following along as she documented her journey.
- 8:15She was basically trying to see how much she could trade to get
- 8:18bigger and bigger items. So Demi had this goal of a
- 8:20house, and she planned to give the house away at the end of the
- 8:25series, hoping to help someone who really needed it.
- 8:27So this all happened. She got the house and she ended
- 8:30up giving the house away to a teenage girl named Shay.
- 8:34So people were sending in emails and letters and stuff to her
- 8:36saying like why they were the ones that should get the house
- 8:39and she chose this girl, Shay. Shay was living with her friends
- 8:42at the time. She had a difficult upbringing.
- 8:44Her mother passed away in a car accident when she was two years
- 8:46old and then years later her father ended up overdosing.
- 8:49After facing a battle with depression, Shay got the house
- 8:53and it took her a while but she moved into the house January
- 8:5625th, 2022. So while all of this went down
- 8:59in 2021 and 2022, a few days ago Shay posted a now deleted ticket
- 9:04talk writing quote when I literally won a house from a Tik
- 9:07Toker and was later banned from the property.
- 9:10TikTok users obviously were very shocked by this revelation and
- 9:13many were directing a lot of hate towards Demi questioning
- 9:16why she would kick Shay out of the house.
- 9:19So two days ago, Demi posted a video setting the record
- 9:22straight. She explained that Shay hadn't
- 9:25been living in the house and left it in complete disarray.
- 9:28So six months after Shay had moved in, a neighbor contacted
- 9:31Demi saying that there were stacks of Amazon packages
- 9:34sitting outside the house. Demi later messaged Shay about
- 9:37the packages, to which she said that she was currently out of
- 9:40state and trying to find a flight back.
- 9:42Months passed and Demi continued to try and coordinate with Shay
- 9:45to get the packages to her safely and move back into the
- 9:48house. However, she had yet to return
- 9:51to the house to get them. She explained that she was
- 9:54struggling with the move, especially at such a young age.
- 9:57Demi then promised that she would continue managing the
- 9:59house to keep things easier for her.
- 10:01So in these messages, Demi was being really understanding and
- 10:03very sweet. In August 2023, Demi went back
- 10:07to the house to check on everything because Shay hadn't
- 10:09been back in over a year. Quote.
- 10:11We got to the house and the house was completely ruined.
- 10:13Everything inside, essentially there was pee on the ground.
- 10:16All of this garbage that had been used in the month that she
- 10:18was there was just jammed into closets.
- 10:21I'd never seen anything like this, Demi said.
- 10:24After visiting the house, Demi said that she would no longer be
- 10:27allowed to return to the property quote due to the
- 10:30property damage, health and safety violations in the house,
- 10:32and also explained that she was devastated.
- 10:36So the reaction of TikTok users has been pretty split.
- 10:39Many believe that Demi was correct to not allow Shay to
- 10:43come back and that she had given her enough chances because there
- 10:46was just a lot of back and forth messages over that year where
- 10:50Demi was being really understanding about Shay's
- 10:53circumstances. Whereas others are extending
- 10:56more grace to Shay saying that having a house at 19 is a really
- 11:00big responsibility and maybe she just wasn't ready for it.
- 11:03And I think it's a little bit of both.
- 11:04Like I I personally think of course Shay was not ready for
- 11:08the house, despite her age. It's very clear she wasn't ready
- 11:12to take on that responsibility and keep it up.
- 11:15And I do believe that the house was in a different state than
- 11:18she lived in. So that's also a massive
- 11:20commitment to ask somebody to move, especially at that young
- 11:23age without a big support system to move, you know, across the
- 11:27country for this house. So I think there's a little bit
- 11:30of onus probably on both parties here, but it just sucks.
- 11:34Like, it sucks that this really fun initiative that happened on
- 11:37TikTok, it was really viral at the time.
- 11:39People loved watching this experience and it was like this
- 11:42feel good moment and so few feel good things happen on that app.
- 11:45So for it to kind of blow up in our faces like this, it sucks.
- 11:50All right guys. Well, that is it for today.
