- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyon. This episode number two and thirty five,
- 0:20Speaker 1: and today in the show, we are talking about public
- 0:22Speaker 1: land white tails. We are talking about stalking down deer
- 0:25Speaker 1: on the ground. We are discussing being mobile first time
- 0:28Speaker 1: sits finding the hot sign, and so much more. And
- 0:31Speaker 1: to do that, we're joined by Zack Barrenbaugh of The
- 0:34Speaker 1: Hunting Public. Alright, real quick, before we get this one started,
- 0:47Speaker 1: we want to thank our friends at Lacrosse Boots for
- 0:50Speaker 1: the support of this podcast episode. Lacrosse produces some of
- 0:54Speaker 1: the best knee high rubber boots out there for white
- 0:57Speaker 1: tail hunters. I've been wearing them for a very long
- 0:59Speaker 1: time now, both the Alpha Burley Pros and the Arrowheads.
- 1:03Speaker 1: They've worked great for me. They are waterproof, they are
- 1:06Speaker 1: sent free as they come, they are comfortable, they keep
- 1:09Speaker 1: it warm, They do just about anything you need a
- 1:12Speaker 1: boot to do in the white tail woods. Plus, they're
- 1:14Speaker 1: available in many different camouflage options and solid green and
- 1:19Speaker 1: yellow if you like that throwback look, which is what
- 1:21Speaker 1: I'm rocking this year. I've been very happy with that.
- 1:23Speaker 1: So if you're interested in checking out Lacrosse Boots for yourself,
- 1:27Speaker 1: if you need some new kicks, head on over to
- 1:29Speaker 1: Lacrosse Footwear dot com and check them out. All right,
- 1:34Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, brought to you
- 1:37Speaker 1: by Onyx and today we're talking public land white tails
- 1:42Speaker 1: and joining Dan and I is Zach Fahrenbaugh. And if
- 1:46Speaker 1: your YouTube watcher, you're probably are possibly familiar with Zack
- 1:49Speaker 1: because of his work with Midwest white tail in the
- 1:51Speaker 1: past and his current work with the hunting public. If
- 1:56Speaker 1: you're not familiar with these guys, gotta check them out
- 1:57Speaker 1: the Hunting Public. It's one of the absolute best white
- 2:00Speaker 1: tail YouTube channels out there right now. Um, and it's Zack,
- 2:04Speaker 1: and it's Aaron Warburton, who was a guest of ours
- 2:06Speaker 1: last summer, and a handful of other guys. They're putting
- 2:09Speaker 1: out almost daily video blogs showcasing their public land hunts
- 2:13Speaker 1: all over the place they're They're living in Iowa, but
- 2:15Speaker 1: they're also going to other places like Nebraska, Kentucky, UM, Missouri.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I heard they're going to Alabama. Who knows. They're all
- 2:23Speaker 1: over the place. They're doing a great job, and I
- 2:25Speaker 1: think it's I think it's shining a great light on
- 2:27Speaker 1: the public land opportunities that are out there. Uh, they're
- 2:30Speaker 1: getting on some great bucks. They're showing that you can
- 2:32Speaker 1: hunt quality mature deer even if you don't have a
- 2:35Speaker 1: big farm and food plot. So I think that's awesome.
- 2:37Speaker 1: I've really been enjoying what they're doing. And um, I
- 2:40Speaker 1: think Zack is gonna be a guy who has some
- 2:42Speaker 1: interesting thoughts, some interesting stories. So I'm excited. Dan. I
- 2:47Speaker 1: gotta say, though, you know, I've been out chasing some
- 2:50Speaker 1: public land bucks. Zack's chasing public land bucks. When are
- 2:53Speaker 1: we gonna get you take the plunge in public land? Yeah?
- 2:58Speaker 1: I got some stuff in here in Michigan. That's just
- 3:00Speaker 1: calling her name. Oh okay, so it has to be
- 3:04Speaker 1: in Michigan. Yeah. I hunted on public last season, dude,
- 3:08Speaker 1: early season. Oh, I guess you did too. I did.
- 3:12Speaker 1: And I hunted on public land this year during elk season.
- 3:17Speaker 1: I mean that doesn't count, Okay, Okay. Basically, I'm just
- 3:21Speaker 1: trying to get you to leave your wonderful deer hunting
- 3:24Speaker 1: and come down to come down to my level. So
- 3:27Speaker 1: I feel less bad. But yeah, basically, what you're telling
- 3:30Speaker 1: me is, hey, Dan, we need you to hunt really
- 3:33Speaker 1: shitty ground exactly because okay, because you got it too good.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Did you see did you see that comment on Facebook today? Um?
- 3:41Speaker 1: Someone you asked on the nine Finger Chronicles facebook page
- 3:44Speaker 1: if what people thought about high fence hunting and someone
- 3:48Speaker 1: and then someone comments, isn't that what it's like in Iowa?
- 3:50Speaker 1: Or isn't it So do you mean Iowa bow hunting? Yeah? Exactly, exactly. Like, man,
- 3:58Speaker 1: uh so, how are you otherwise you are getting excited? Uh? Yeah, dude,
- 4:04Speaker 1: I'm I'm starting to really think about this season, um
- 4:07Speaker 1: a lot lately, just from a planning standpoint. There's not
- 4:11Speaker 1: much I can really do, but I know that I
- 4:15Speaker 1: have a lot to do, so uh man, I don't know.
- 4:19Speaker 1: I just feel like I'm really, really, really behind this year.
- 4:22Speaker 1: I haven't I haven't moved my trail cameras off the
- 4:26Speaker 1: mineral sites yet because I haven't. I've just been crazy busy.
- 4:30Speaker 1: I haven't set up all the tree stands that I
- 4:32Speaker 1: needed to set up because I've been crazy busy. I mean,
- 4:35Speaker 1: all these are kind of excuses, but um, I'm I'm
- 4:40Speaker 1: playing this chess match right now, me in time, right,
- 4:44Speaker 1: so I have to be here for my kids and
- 4:46Speaker 1: I have, like I got back on my elk hunt right,
- 4:48Speaker 1: so now I have to really focus on the family
- 4:51Speaker 1: for the next you know, two weeks until I can
- 4:54Speaker 1: get out. I might get out opening evening October one,
- 4:58Speaker 1: but then that we weekend, my wife has stuff going on,
- 5:03Speaker 1: so I have to babysit. It's like, uh, I don't know,
- 5:09Speaker 1: I don't know. It's not easy, right. And I got
- 5:13Speaker 1: inspired because I was talking to this guy on the
- 5:18Speaker 1: nine Finger Chronicles podcast uh this this past weekend and
- 5:23Speaker 1: he's found a lot of success early season um bow hunting,
- 5:28Speaker 1: And I want to kill a dear early season so bad,
- 5:33Speaker 1: Like I don't. I want to find one and kill
- 5:35Speaker 1: one that meets my standards and not have to go
- 5:38Speaker 1: into the rut for some reason this year, I want to.
- 5:41Speaker 1: I want to get it done and get it done early.
- 5:44Speaker 1: More power to you man that early season. I mean,
- 5:47Speaker 1: I mean the September hunts. Now, I know you're not
- 5:49Speaker 1: gonna be hunt September, but I've really fallen in love
- 5:51Speaker 1: with the September bow hunting. Catching him on that bed
- 5:54Speaker 1: defeat pattern they're really on a pattern trying to decipher
- 5:57Speaker 1: that quickly and make an adjustment and get on him.
- 5:59Speaker 1: I mean, that's a lot of fun um. And I
- 6:02Speaker 1: know Zach, he's gonna have some stuff to talk about
- 6:04Speaker 1: that because they do that a lot um as certainly
- 6:06Speaker 1: as possible. Now, um, oh god, I guess what I
- 6:13Speaker 1: was gonna ask you was gonna be related to your
- 6:15Speaker 1: trail cameras. But you haven't checked your trail cameras yet
- 6:19Speaker 1: one yeah, just one time, and you're not going to
- 6:22Speaker 1: check them until you start hunting? Is that if I remember?
- 6:25Speaker 1: I mean, I have this rule that says, uh, don't
- 6:29Speaker 1: go into the timber during September period. And I I
- 6:33Speaker 1: mean a lot of those, A lot of those trail
- 6:35Speaker 1: cameras are on the edge of the timber. Like I could.
- 6:38Speaker 1: I could drive to most of them, uh all except
- 6:41Speaker 1: maybe two of them. But it's just, man, I like,
- 6:45Speaker 1: I want to know what's there. I want to know
- 6:47Speaker 1: what happened with this shift, right. I want to get
- 6:50Speaker 1: my trail camera More importantly, I want to get my
- 6:52Speaker 1: trail cameras in position for October so so that when
- 6:58Speaker 1: the rut does hit, I have you know, four or
- 7:01Speaker 1: four and a half weeks of data to let me know. Hey,
- 7:04Speaker 1: you know when some of this stuff going when some
- 7:06Speaker 1: of the stuff is going down. Yeah, you know, I
- 7:09Speaker 1: know you've got that September rule. But if you can
- 7:12Speaker 1: drive to stuff, that might not be a bad idea,
- 7:16Speaker 1: even though you're gonna go in there, as long as
- 7:18Speaker 1: you stay with your car running. Just move the camera
- 7:21Speaker 1: from wherever it's at to mock scrape or scrape on
- 7:24Speaker 1: the edge of the field, and if you drive, uh
- 7:27Speaker 1: you know, put some nosejamber where we put the camera.
- 7:29Speaker 1: I mean, that might be worth the tiny bit of
- 7:32Speaker 1: negative risk you're taking there, might be worth the increased
- 7:35Speaker 1: intel you can get, especially if you're trying to kill
- 7:36Speaker 1: one early, because that you're gonna need some data to
- 7:39Speaker 1: figure that out. Yeah, that's a fact. Man. I don't know.
- 7:43Speaker 1: We'll see, Uh, we'll just see what happens. It's all
- 7:47Speaker 1: it's all based off time. And if I if I
- 7:49Speaker 1: can make it, I can make it. If I can't,
- 7:50Speaker 1: I can't. Yeah, I hear you're there. I um man,
- 7:53Speaker 1: I don't know what about my early season chances over
- 7:55Speaker 1: here in Michigan, my oh, my main holy field arm
- 8:00Speaker 1: over there. I've got one wireless camera that's working, and
- 8:03Speaker 1: I haven't got crap on that. Um, just does and
- 8:06Speaker 1: like a spike, even though the food plot it's on
- 8:09Speaker 1: looks beautiful. I got a scrape tree in there. All
- 8:12Speaker 1: the doughs are hitting it, but but nothing with any age,
- 8:14Speaker 1: no sign of hoole the field yet. I've scouted a
- 8:17Speaker 1: handful of knights watching over this area from the road.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Nothing not a single buck other than a year and
- 8:22Speaker 1: a half olds. Um, So that's discouraging. But the new
- 8:27Speaker 1: property that I'm hunting, I saw that pick I might
- 8:33Speaker 1: hunt Michigan this year. That's a pretty good looking buck,
- 8:36Speaker 1: isn't it? Because that one brow time just makes me
- 8:40Speaker 1: happy for some reason. I don't know why. I think
- 8:43Speaker 1: that is legitimately a twelve inch brow time. Yeah, it's crazy. Yeah,
- 8:49Speaker 1: I love big brows. Yes, I agree. I've yet take Well,
- 8:54Speaker 1: I've killed one deer with a really big brow tin
- 8:56Speaker 1: that that buck six shooter that killed a handful of
- 8:59Speaker 1: years ago. He had a pretty cool prout time. Um,
- 9:01Speaker 1: but I've never really got one of those deer they
- 9:03Speaker 1: have those two just huge eye guards. That would be
- 9:07Speaker 1: that would be awesome. So this deer has got one
- 9:09Speaker 1: insanely long one and he has been coming in and out.
- 9:13Speaker 1: This camera is set up just inside from a little
- 9:16Speaker 1: kind of food source. It's some I think it's wheat
- 9:19Speaker 1: or oats or something in it. And um, there's super
- 9:22Speaker 1: thick betting right off of the edge of this food source,
- 9:26Speaker 1: and there's a little two track that cuts off of
- 9:27Speaker 1: the field heading into that thick stuff. And so I
- 9:30Speaker 1: put a camera on a mock scrape just along that
- 9:32Speaker 1: two track, just inside off of the field. And um,
- 9:36Speaker 1: so I drove in there and pulled that card. I
- 9:38Speaker 1: don't know. This was a week ago or something, and
- 9:42Speaker 1: this big boys on their pretty consistent leaving in the evening,
- 9:44Speaker 1: come back in the morning, in and out same way. Um,
- 9:48Speaker 1: still under the cover of darkness. But on the twelve
- 9:52Speaker 1: or or something like that, he was pretty close to daylight.
- 9:56Speaker 1: It was like the kind of within an hour. So
- 9:59Speaker 1: I'm I'm glad to see there's a consistent mature buck
- 10:03Speaker 1: like that coming in and out of there. And that's
- 10:05Speaker 1: gotta excited. So yeah, it's always good when one of
- 10:08Speaker 1: those shows up. Yeah, it's right now, the only mature
- 10:12Speaker 1: buck I've seen on camera, So hoping, hoping for more
- 10:16Speaker 1: good stuff. To come soon. And you know how it
- 10:18Speaker 1: is once October rolls in, at least at least for
- 10:20Speaker 1: me and a lot of spots I hunt, it seems
- 10:22Speaker 1: like I never had one of those farms is just
- 10:24Speaker 1: loaded with summer bucks. It's like that back the Ohio
- 10:27Speaker 1: spot we hunted that used to be loaded with summer bucks.
- 10:29Speaker 1: But none of my Michigan areas, so fingers crossed they
- 10:34Speaker 1: show up and when season kicks off will be something
- 10:37Speaker 1: to something to go after. But we got less than
- 10:41Speaker 1: two weeks, right, I know, man, Uh, I don't know
- 10:45Speaker 1: whether I should I don't know whether I should be
- 10:48Speaker 1: more excited or less excited, because I'm in this state
- 10:53Speaker 1: of limbo now where I feel like if I go,
- 10:56Speaker 1: if I get excited now, I'm just gonna have my
- 10:59Speaker 1: spirits crushed with Hey, okay, so we have plans for this, this, this,
- 11:02Speaker 1: and this for this October and then, uh, you got
- 11:07Speaker 1: three kids and I'm not going to watch them all
- 11:09Speaker 1: the time. You went on a one week elk hunt.
- 11:11Speaker 1: So there's that, and so I don't know, I just
- 11:15Speaker 1: every year. I don't know how this is for for
- 11:18Speaker 1: the guys out there who their wives kind of give
- 11:21Speaker 1: them grief a little bit. But every year I have
- 11:23Speaker 1: to have a conversation, and every year it's the same
- 11:25Speaker 1: conversation as the conversation from the previous year. And then
- 11:29Speaker 1: someone someone ends up not getting to do what they
- 11:32Speaker 1: want to do, and someone like holds it against the
- 11:36Speaker 1: other person. Doesn't she just to do what she wants
- 11:41Speaker 1: to do the rest of the year, though, Don't you
- 11:43Speaker 1: pretty much given the whole rest of the year because
- 11:46Speaker 1: you're trying to save up your brownie points right now? Yeah?
- 11:49Speaker 1: I do. But her things are like maybe one day
- 11:53Speaker 1: at a time. So like for me, that Elk hunt
- 11:55Speaker 1: was eight days, right, that's eight days of having to
- 11:58Speaker 1: watch my three kids. Like Mark, I have full confidence
- 12:03Speaker 1: that you can go out into the into the harshest
- 12:05Speaker 1: mountains and survive for eight days. But I'm not so
- 12:08Speaker 1: sure I would put money on you if if you
- 12:11Speaker 1: had to watch my three kids for eight days. Yeah,
- 12:16Speaker 1: they look they look rough. Um, maybe we need to
- 12:21Speaker 1: do I think I can't remember this last year or
- 12:24Speaker 1: two years ago that I paid for babysitting for you,
- 12:29Speaker 1: maybe like one one or two days. Yeah, I got
- 12:31Speaker 1: you a couple of days of babies. I think maybe
- 12:33Speaker 1: we need to create a Kickstarter for all the audience
- 12:36Speaker 1: to wear an audience to chip in, chip in to
- 12:40Speaker 1: get you some babiesitting time. Oh man, that'd be awesome. Yeah,
- 12:44Speaker 1: I be honest to god, I bet you we'd get
- 12:46Speaker 1: a lot of money. I know. I know people want
- 12:49Speaker 1: to see you hunt, Dan. They just want you to
- 12:51Speaker 1: live out your dreams. I know, and I would. I would.
- 12:54Speaker 1: I'd probably just take that money. Take your wife out
- 12:59Speaker 1: to dinner, check her out to dinner at those Brownie points.
- 13:02Speaker 1: But that's that's the goal in the next two weeks
- 13:05Speaker 1: is just make her as happy as humanly possible. Well,
- 13:08Speaker 1: you you work hard at that because we need some
- 13:11Speaker 1: good stories from you this this October. So should we
- 13:15Speaker 1: should we get Zake on though, because Zack's already been hunting,
- 13:19Speaker 1: He's got some good stories to tell. And uh, I
- 13:21Speaker 1: think we'll have an interesting conversation. Sounds good, all right,
- 13:24Speaker 1: let's do it. Alright, Let's take a quick second here
- 13:27Speaker 1: to think our partners at Onyx. Onyx as the producer
- 13:30Speaker 1: of the Onyx Hunt app, which is something that I'm
- 13:33Speaker 1: using probably just about daily. It's something that I know
- 13:36Speaker 1: that Zach is using almost daily. It's a tool that's
- 13:40Speaker 1: gonna allow you to see your aerial views of maps,
- 13:42Speaker 1: gonna allow you to see typo graphic views of maps.
- 13:45Speaker 1: It's gonna allow you to see property line information overlaid,
- 13:49Speaker 1: so you can see where the private property borders are,
- 13:51Speaker 1: you can see where the public land is. You can
- 13:53Speaker 1: see where trails are, campgrounds are, you can oh my gosh,
- 13:57Speaker 1: you can see so many different things. There's even if
- 13:58Speaker 1: you're heading out west do elk hunting, your mule deer hunting,
- 14:01Speaker 1: you can overlay where the recent burns have been Back
- 14:05Speaker 1: here in the Midwest and the East where we're worried
- 14:07Speaker 1: about c w D, there's now a layer where you
- 14:09Speaker 1: can overlay where c w D has been found. UM,
- 14:13Speaker 1: so many different options here, tremendous tool. I'm heading off
- 14:16Speaker 1: for an elk hunt tomorrow and I will have my
- 14:18Speaker 1: Onyx app up and running probably the entire time, tracking
- 14:21Speaker 1: where I'm at, watching and seeing where I'm going, plotting
- 14:25Speaker 1: out where we want to head next. Um. Just something
- 14:28Speaker 1: that I've found very valuable and I imagine you would
- 14:30Speaker 1: two And if you are interested in checking it out,
- 14:32Speaker 1: if you haven't yet, you can get the Onyx Hunt
- 14:34Speaker 1: app over on just about any mobile app store and
- 14:37Speaker 1: if you use the promo code wired w I R
- 14:40Speaker 1: E D, you can get off your order. That promo
- 14:44Speaker 1: code is w I R E D. Al Right, we
- 14:49Speaker 1: are back now with Zach fahren Ball. Welcome to show. Zack,
- 14:54Speaker 1: thanks for having me. I'm excited to chat because you know,
- 14:59Speaker 1: we had Aaron on show last summer and enjoyed that conversation.
- 15:03Speaker 1: But you are kind of like the wild card of
- 15:08Speaker 1: the hunting public. I feel like and and my buddy
- 15:11Speaker 1: Dan over here, he's like the wild card of the
- 15:13Speaker 1: Wired Hub podcast. So I needed to make sure to
- 15:17Speaker 1: connect to you guys, and this should be an interesting
- 15:20Speaker 1: conversation because of that, I think. So I'm looking forward
- 15:23Speaker 1: to it. Um, yeah, I like that. I like I
- 15:26Speaker 1: like the wild card name or you know, gonna be
- 15:29Speaker 1: in that guy. I like that no expectations that way,
- 15:35Speaker 1: but that no expectations that way exactly that, That's exactly
- 15:40Speaker 1: the way I like it, No expectations. What I what
- 15:43Speaker 1: I think we gotta do to get like the perfect
- 15:45Speaker 1: hunter look would be to take Zack's hair and Dan's
- 15:50Speaker 1: rut hunting beard. And if we combine those two things together,
- 15:52Speaker 1: we have the most amazing bow hunting hair of anyone
- 15:55Speaker 1: out there, I agree. I agree. I can't grow facial
- 16:00Speaker 1: hair with a damn like. I just can't grow it.
- 16:03Speaker 1: I tried my whole life. I can't do it. So yeah,
- 16:07Speaker 1: if I could get a beard on it, I would
- 16:09Speaker 1: do it, but I just can't can't make it happen. Well, hey,
- 16:12Speaker 1: I feel your payment. I'm right there with you, So
- 16:16Speaker 1: I can't can't have it all, that's right. Um So,
- 16:21Speaker 1: so for those who are not familiar, you know we
- 16:23Speaker 1: are on the show last year, you guys hadn't started
- 16:26Speaker 1: the hunting public yet. Um so, can you give folks
- 16:29Speaker 1: a kind of quick overview of how that came to be?
- 16:32Speaker 1: And uh, and then we'll kind of go from there. Yeah. Um, Aaron,
- 16:38Speaker 1: Greg and I were all working at Midwest White Tail.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Those guys have been there for I think both of
- 16:44Speaker 1: them started in two thousand or two thousand ten. Greg
- 16:47Speaker 1: started and then two thousand eleven Aaron started, and then
- 16:50Speaker 1: I started there in two thousand and fifteen, and we
- 16:54Speaker 1: worked there. We had a lot of buddies that worked
- 16:56Speaker 1: there at different times too, And I guess it was just,
- 17:01Speaker 1: you know, kind of got to the point where we
- 17:03Speaker 1: wanted to really start branching out and and you know
- 17:07Speaker 1: kind of take a risk and go out on our
- 17:10Speaker 1: own and really own what we were doing. And you know,
- 17:15Speaker 1: we um just kind of went for it, I guess,
- 17:18Speaker 1: and didn't didn't really know if it was going to
- 17:22Speaker 1: be anything that was you know, going to be sustainable
- 17:25Speaker 1: or you know, if it was we're going to be
- 17:27Speaker 1: able to continue to keep doing you know, just just
- 17:32Speaker 1: hunting industry type stuff. So I guess we started a
- 17:36Speaker 1: Originally we just started simply like a production business, and
- 17:40Speaker 1: our main goal was to, um, you know, just do
- 17:45Speaker 1: all kinds of different projects, anything from you know, senior photos,
- 17:50Speaker 1: weddings too, you know, maybe some hunting videos. And the
- 17:54Speaker 1: first fall or first couple of months there in the fall,
- 17:58Speaker 1: we just kind of used up all the money that
- 18:01Speaker 1: you know, or what very very little money we had,
- 18:04Speaker 1: and we just kind of used it all up and
- 18:06Speaker 1: bought equipment and started hunting and just started making hunting
- 18:11Speaker 1: videos because that's what you know, we really wanted what
- 18:14Speaker 1: we were going to do until we ran out of
- 18:17Speaker 1: money and end up, you know, I guess, getting some
- 18:20Speaker 1: traction there enough to at least keep it going through
- 18:23Speaker 1: the fall, and then h our friends that legendary White
- 18:27Speaker 1: Tails really helped us kind of keep it keep it
- 18:30Speaker 1: afloat there at the beginning, and um, you know, we
- 18:34Speaker 1: really really very very thankful for that. You know, they
- 18:37Speaker 1: helped us out a ton and I guess they were
- 18:39Speaker 1: kind of the first people to jump on board and
- 18:41Speaker 1: really support us, and we were able to keep things
- 18:44Speaker 1: going throughout the spring. And and now you know, we
- 18:47Speaker 1: don't have to do or we're you know, we're able
- 18:50Speaker 1: to focus more on kind of the hunting side of
- 18:53Speaker 1: the production business and we do a lot of um,
- 18:56Speaker 1: you know stuff within the hunting industry. We do small
- 18:59Speaker 1: projects for people, um, different hunting brands and stuff like that,
- 19:03Speaker 1: and then that's how, you know, one of the ways
- 19:06Speaker 1: that we're staying aflow. But yeah, I just I guess
- 19:10Speaker 1: gained just enough traction that we were able to kind
- 19:12Speaker 1: of go full time into focusing on hunting videos. And
- 19:17Speaker 1: you know, our main mission with starting all this was
- 19:21Speaker 1: we just really wanted to have videos that we're relatable,
- 19:25Speaker 1: and our main I guess mission is to help get
- 19:30Speaker 1: more people are interested in hunting, get them you know
- 19:34Speaker 1: or viet help people feel confident and um hunting public land,
- 19:40Speaker 1: you know, showing people that Hey, there is options out
- 19:42Speaker 1: there if you don't have a leads or if you
- 19:43Speaker 1: don't have a farm, or you know, you can't afford
- 19:45Speaker 1: those things, or you know, if you don't have permission
- 19:48Speaker 1: or know somebody, whatever the case may be. We're just
- 19:51Speaker 1: we really really really want more people to get into
- 19:55Speaker 1: the sport get excited about doing it. Um. You know,
- 19:58Speaker 1: we just don't want the hunting, the population of hunters
- 20:01Speaker 1: to keep decreasing. You know, it's to us. We feel
- 20:04Speaker 1: it's an issue and we want to get people excited
- 20:07Speaker 1: about it, get people back out in the woods, and
- 20:10Speaker 1: you know, have some fun along the way. Yeah. Yeah,
- 20:13Speaker 1: you guys are doing it, and I gotta I gotta
- 20:15Speaker 1: give you mad props for you know, taking that leap.
- 20:18Speaker 1: I know what that's like. I know that's scary, and
- 20:21Speaker 1: trying to make it work on your own, that's that's
- 20:24Speaker 1: no easy tasks. So um, well done on making it
- 20:27Speaker 1: the first through the first year, and it seems like
- 20:30Speaker 1: you guys got lots of momentum, so I'm sure it's
- 20:32Speaker 1: going to continue. But I'm excited for you guys. Yeah. Thanks,
- 20:35Speaker 1: it was Yeah, like you said, it was a pretty
- 20:38Speaker 1: it was pretty scary. You know what that Well, I
- 20:42Speaker 1: guess when we first decided we were going to do it,
- 20:44Speaker 1: is like, well, like you know, here we go, may
- 20:48Speaker 1: just may just end up like doing something completely different,
- 20:52Speaker 1: and you know, a couple of months, but you know,
- 20:54Speaker 1: at least we've we've got some goals and we just
- 20:58Speaker 1: went forward and glad we did. Yeah, yeah, that's cool.
- 21:02Speaker 1: I'm glad it worked out. And you speaking of those
- 21:06Speaker 1: early months, that brings me to the next thing I
- 21:09Speaker 1: really want to talk about, which was Nebraska, because you
- 21:13Speaker 1: guys took off last year right when you started this
- 21:15Speaker 1: whole thing, and you headed out to Nebraska for this
- 21:18Speaker 1: public land hunt, and that was really the first set
- 21:20Speaker 1: of videos I think that you guys started putting out there. Um,
- 21:24Speaker 1: you went back to the same place again this year.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Both of those hunts looked like they went really well.
- 21:30Speaker 1: I yeah, I would love to hear more about how
- 21:34Speaker 1: that went this year and then maybe probably last year
- 21:36Speaker 1: till I'm interested in both of them. And Dan, you'll
- 21:38Speaker 1: be You'll be interested to know this is kind of
- 21:40Speaker 1: out in that neck of the woods that you really
- 21:42Speaker 1: love in Nebraska. So I think if you haven't seen
- 21:45Speaker 1: these videos they're putting out, you should check it out
- 21:46Speaker 1: because it's right up your alley with those big, rolling,
- 21:48Speaker 1: grassy hills and it looks like big country, isn't Zack.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Oh yeah, the Nebraska sam Hills are pretty pretty vast.
- 21:57Speaker 1: I mean there's a lot of lamb and in fortunately
- 22:00Speaker 1: there's a lot of publicly I'm giving you know, people
- 22:03Speaker 1: that anything from fisherman to bird hunters and deer or
- 22:07Speaker 1: you know, meal deer hunters, white tail hunters. There's all
- 22:10Speaker 1: kinds of wildlife out there. It's a pretty incredible area.
- 22:14Speaker 1: It sure looks like it. So, so I walk us
- 22:18Speaker 1: through how how you ended up putting together some success.
- 22:21Speaker 1: I guess let's let's talk last year first, because I'm
- 22:23Speaker 1: kind of interested in this progression now that you've had
- 22:25Speaker 1: last year, what you learned from it, how that led
- 22:27Speaker 1: to this year. Um, I've watched those videos and got
- 22:31Speaker 1: to see how you put together, but I'd be curious
- 22:33Speaker 1: to hear what your thought process was throughout those those days. Yeah. Well, so,
- 22:38Speaker 1: I guess the first trip is actually pretty funny. It
- 22:41Speaker 1: was the first videos that we produced. But we definitely
- 22:44Speaker 1: like at this point in us like we were basically
- 22:47Speaker 1: just jobless, Like we didn't we we didn't really have
- 22:50Speaker 1: any expectation totally yet of what we were doing. We
- 22:53Speaker 1: just like new we wanted to try to you know,
- 22:56Speaker 1: make make a living filming and editing, you know, using
- 23:01Speaker 1: our our talents and filming and editing. So again, we
- 23:04Speaker 1: didn't really like we wanted to make hunting videos, but
- 23:06Speaker 1: we didn't really know. So yeah, we just took Eron's
- 23:10Speaker 1: camera that he'd bought years ago. We just went for it,
- 23:14Speaker 1: Jake Brody and I and we I guess essentially just
- 23:21Speaker 1: started looking at maps a few days before we went, uh,
- 23:25Speaker 1: picked out a campsite and just drove out there. We
- 23:28Speaker 1: drove out there, Oh, I want to save us around
- 23:32Speaker 1: the thirteenth or fourteen, um, I think it was. Yeah,
- 23:35Speaker 1: one of those two days we drove out there just
- 23:37Speaker 1: to night, got there very early in the morning, slept
- 23:40Speaker 1: for about an hour, and then I woke up and
- 23:42Speaker 1: saw the sand Hills for the first time and was
- 23:45Speaker 1: just totally blown away. And you know, I guess by
- 23:48Speaker 1: looking at maps beforehand and Jake Jacobs that had actually
- 23:52Speaker 1: hunted there um in the late season before, so he
- 23:56Speaker 1: had an idea of you know, what the area looked like.
- 23:59Speaker 1: We had it out several places on a map, and
- 24:02Speaker 1: you know, places that we wanted to check out. We
- 24:04Speaker 1: got there and just started observing these areas that you know,
- 24:10Speaker 1: we had suspected to be the best whitetail habitat, and
- 24:16Speaker 1: pretty quickly we eliminated a lot of stuff just by
- 24:20Speaker 1: you know, simply not observing deer coming out of the
- 24:22Speaker 1: areas we thought they were going to be in. And
- 24:25Speaker 1: we also just kind of got a little frustrated with
- 24:28Speaker 1: that observing. And what we started doing was we'd see
- 24:32Speaker 1: an area that you know, seemed like betting habitat and
- 24:36Speaker 1: like we'd seen deer and very similar stuff, and we
- 24:40Speaker 1: would just go in and we would still hunt it
- 24:43Speaker 1: and in the morning specifically, and we would be still
- 24:47Speaker 1: hunting and working back with those deer as they were
- 24:51Speaker 1: coming back into the betting areas, and we ran into
- 24:54Speaker 1: some deer doing that, and we also got our best
- 24:57Speaker 1: information by doing that. We would just go right through
- 24:59Speaker 1: these betting areas and we were looking for buck sign.
- 25:02Speaker 1: You know, that time of the year, the deer just
- 25:05Speaker 1: sid if you find a fresh rub right now, like
- 25:09Speaker 1: you better be thinking about that. I guess, in my
- 25:11Speaker 1: opinion at least, like that's the best sign to find
- 25:15Speaker 1: buff and and I don't run. I guess I shouldn't
- 25:18Speaker 1: say I don't run. My my my friends do, and
- 25:20Speaker 1: I use their information, but I don't run trail cameras.
- 25:22Speaker 1: I just like to run off signed And that's something
- 25:25Speaker 1: I'll probably talk about a lot um. It's just looking
- 25:30Speaker 1: at sign, looking at fresh sign, looking at big tracks, rubs, beds,
- 25:35Speaker 1: you know, all the scrapes, all kinds of deer tigme,
- 25:38Speaker 1: just really looking at that and trying to decipher that
- 25:40Speaker 1: and then trying to make a plan to set up
- 25:42Speaker 1: on it. And that's what we're doing. We'd go in
- 25:44Speaker 1: and more than anything, just looking for rubs and big
- 25:47Speaker 1: beds and did that and we had a lot of
- 25:52Speaker 1: you know, or or we'd find an area that we
- 25:54Speaker 1: had a lot of confidence in and we'd go back
- 25:56Speaker 1: in there and we'd hunt it. And our whole strategy
- 25:58Speaker 1: would be basically get in and get set up right
- 26:00Speaker 1: on top of beds and hope that they came right
- 26:02Speaker 1: back into them. And we had some encounters, but then finally, well,
- 26:08Speaker 1: I guess, let me take one one quick step back.
- 26:11Speaker 1: The other thing that we would do is we would
- 26:13Speaker 1: literally go through and do like beer drives, or we
- 26:16Speaker 1: call them wind bumps where we'd pick a betting area
- 26:20Speaker 1: and what I would and Brodie and I both had tags.
- 26:24Speaker 1: And he because he hunted because he was he was
- 26:28Speaker 1: an Iowa resident, but his brothers and lived lived in Nebraska,
- 26:32Speaker 1: so he'd go back and hunting in Nebraska. So we
- 26:35Speaker 1: both had tags. But when we would go into these
- 26:38Speaker 1: wind bumps, I would bump out these areas and I
- 26:40Speaker 1: would just go through them, letting my wind drift through
- 26:42Speaker 1: the bedding area. The deer would bump out in front
- 26:45Speaker 1: of me, and I would just basically be scouting my
- 26:49Speaker 1: way through these these spots and pretty pretty far into
- 26:53Speaker 1: the trip um before you can you can you elaborate
- 26:59Speaker 1: on the wind bumping. So why you're doing it that
- 27:02Speaker 1: way and what you're what you're trying to achieve with that. Well,
- 27:06Speaker 1: there's two two main things that we were trying to
- 27:10Speaker 1: learn and achieve. I mean, for one, straight up trying
- 27:13Speaker 1: to get a deer, like we've had to work in
- 27:15Speaker 1: the past um where you know, a deer comes out
- 27:20Speaker 1: of the betting area and offers, you know, the guy
- 27:22Speaker 1: set up a shot. A lot of times the guys
- 27:24Speaker 1: just sitting on the back side of a betting area
- 27:26Speaker 1: on a funnel and hoping that the deer escape calmly,
- 27:31Speaker 1: you know, by letting her scent drift in there. Generally
- 27:35Speaker 1: the deer escape quite a bit calmer than if you
- 27:37Speaker 1: walk through, you know, making a bunch of noise like
- 27:40Speaker 1: a traditional deer drive. You know, I'm basically still hunting
- 27:43Speaker 1: to these betting areas, just letting my scent go kind
- 27:46Speaker 1: of opposite of what you would normally have generally still hunting.
- 27:50Speaker 1: You know, you're gonna have a wind in your face
- 27:52Speaker 1: there across wind and in this situation, I'm just going
- 27:55Speaker 1: through the stetting area more or less scouting with the
- 27:58Speaker 1: wind in my back. So that's you know, goal number
- 28:00Speaker 1: one is simply shoot a deer and having a strategy,
- 28:03Speaker 1: you know, just diffing off the wall strategy. It's totally
- 28:07Speaker 1: different than most most people are going to do a
- 28:09Speaker 1: bow hunting approach, I guess. But the other thing was
- 28:14Speaker 1: is just trying to find that sign. You know. It's
- 28:17Speaker 1: like unless we were going into these betting areas, we
- 28:20Speaker 1: didn't know. I mean, they're so thick, they're so dense
- 28:23Speaker 1: that like these bucks, if they don't leave and go
- 28:26Speaker 1: out into the open You never know they're there unless
- 28:28Speaker 1: you get in there and you either bump them or
- 28:30Speaker 1: just gout around enough to where you're finding the sign
- 28:33Speaker 1: coming out of these betting areas. I mean you had
- 28:35Speaker 1: to get close because they're not they're not moving a
- 28:37Speaker 1: lot that time of the year. They're very very small areas.
- 28:42Speaker 1: So we went into this wind bump one day and
- 28:46Speaker 1: like I said, it was pretty far along in the
- 28:48Speaker 1: in the trip, and I bumped the buck and I
- 28:51Speaker 1: watched him run. Now, the betting area is the wrong way.
- 28:54Speaker 1: He wasn't going towards Jakie Brody, and I watched him
- 28:57Speaker 1: go up over the hill and I was like, oh,
- 28:58Speaker 1: like that's a that's an ice one we've been seeing.
- 29:01Speaker 1: There's not a not a super old age class out there.
- 29:05Speaker 1: So to see its real nice eight point and run
- 29:08Speaker 1: up over the hill, I was like, like, we really
- 29:10Speaker 1: need to think about this and see if we can,
- 29:13Speaker 1: you know, figure out how to hunt it. So I
- 29:16Speaker 1: continue to just scalp that whole thing. And it wasn't
- 29:18Speaker 1: a super big piece maybe ten fifteen acres um, but
- 29:22Speaker 1: just a super dense piece of habitat. There was all
- 29:26Speaker 1: different types of vegetation in there, and there was tons
- 29:28Speaker 1: of you know, basically just a betting area and a
- 29:32Speaker 1: food source all in one. And there was tons and
- 29:35Speaker 1: tons of beds and tons and tons of rubs in there.
- 29:38Speaker 1: I found some scrapes as well, and I was like,
- 29:42Speaker 1: you know, this is something again that we really need
- 29:45Speaker 1: to think about and hopefully he'll come back. But you know,
- 29:48Speaker 1: it's like it's it's such a good betting area and
- 29:51Speaker 1: here's so many deer using it. We did. I did
- 29:54Speaker 1: jump other Um, I did not jump other deer out
- 29:56Speaker 1: of there. Some does. But it's like, even if he
- 29:58Speaker 1: doesn't come back and I just come, surely another buck
- 30:01Speaker 1: will be back in here in the next few days,
- 30:03Speaker 1: at least before we leave. So I did scouted the
- 30:07Speaker 1: whole thing, almost every inch of it in that in
- 30:09Speaker 1: that day that I went bumped. After I bumped that buck,
- 30:11Speaker 1: tried to figure it out, left my scent all over
- 30:13Speaker 1: the place in there. I mean, we was laying in
- 30:15Speaker 1: the beds and seeing what they could see. Was scouting
- 30:17Speaker 1: it right, you know, right in the middle of the trip.
- 30:21Speaker 1: So we waited a couple of days, and we went
- 30:24Speaker 1: in there counting it one day, um and then wait,
- 30:30Speaker 1: like I said, waited a couple of days hunted it
- 30:32Speaker 1: saw I saw most of the year that we I
- 30:35Speaker 1: jumped out of there come back except for that buck.
- 30:37Speaker 1: And then we hunted it again the next morning, which
- 30:40Speaker 1: I think would have been like three days out from
- 30:44Speaker 1: when I went through it and went bumping and scouting,
- 30:47Speaker 1: and right at first light, heard a deer come in,
- 30:51Speaker 1: walked right around us, and it was only about thirty
- 30:53Speaker 1: yards away, but we couldn't see it's so thick in there.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Heard it bed down, and about eight o'clock eight thirty
- 30:59Speaker 1: maybe the wind started picking up. When that wind picked up,
- 31:03Speaker 1: he got up and he shifted his bed. Then he
- 31:05Speaker 1: walked to like ten yards in front of the stands.
- 31:07Speaker 1: There was the same buck that I jumped out of
- 31:09Speaker 1: there just a few days earlier. He walked the ten
- 31:12Speaker 1: yards and his browsing had no idea we were in
- 31:14Speaker 1: the world, and it had a perfect shot at him.
- 31:18Speaker 1: And you know what, that was kind of an eye
- 31:23Speaker 1: opener for me. And I talked to a lot of
- 31:26Speaker 1: people about it since, and you found that a lot
- 31:29Speaker 1: of people also use somewhat of a similar strategy. It
- 31:32Speaker 1: may not be directly trying to bump the deer, but
- 31:34Speaker 1: at the same time. You know, there are other guys
- 31:37Speaker 1: that are doing stuff like that. And I really got
- 31:39Speaker 1: me thinking a lot um just about you know, how
- 31:44Speaker 1: how you come across the best stuff, and and you
- 31:47Speaker 1: know what I kind of came down to was, you know,
- 31:50Speaker 1: you're looking for that fresh sign, that sign that is
- 31:53Speaker 1: being laid down right now, you know. And I think
- 31:56Speaker 1: sometimes guys will get and myself included for sure. I mean,
- 32:03Speaker 1: I'm my goal is to not do this as much
- 32:05Speaker 1: as possible. Fears like I get, I get super fired
- 32:08Speaker 1: up about a spot. But I found in like February, right,
- 32:11Speaker 1: I'm out looking for sheds and trying to find, you know,
- 32:16Speaker 1: find the best dear sign. Well, what you're finding then
- 32:19Speaker 1: is you're finding a whole year's worth a sign. And
- 32:22Speaker 1: it's sometimes hard to decipher. Okay, is that made in October?
- 32:26Speaker 1: Is that made in September? Is that made in December?
- 32:29Speaker 1: I mean not. I mean it's hard to tell. And
- 32:32Speaker 1: I think that I went in and wasted a lot
- 32:35Speaker 1: of fits because I was hunting signed and I saw
- 32:38Speaker 1: in February that wasn't actually laid down in the time
- 32:43Speaker 1: that I thought that. It was, like, you know, I'm like, oh,
- 32:45Speaker 1: it's gonna be awesome on November four. Well, you get
- 32:50Speaker 1: in there and the signs dry, I mean the deer
- 32:52Speaker 1: we're in there in October, you're month late or two
- 32:54Speaker 1: months late, you know, maybe the September when they first shed.
- 32:58Speaker 1: You know what I think, kind of doing that style
- 33:01Speaker 1: of hunting and being mobile and doing kind of off
- 33:04Speaker 1: the wall type stuff allows you to find that hot
- 33:06Speaker 1: sign and in reality, you know, when you find those
- 33:11Speaker 1: best areas where the highest concentrations deer are like, but
- 33:16Speaker 1: they are not just gonna leave. I mean I think that,
- 33:20Speaker 1: you know, and I've had the argument to of like
- 33:22Speaker 1: Holling more pressured states, you know than than Iowa for example,
- 33:27Speaker 1: those gear aren't going to come back. Well I don't
- 33:29Speaker 1: agree with that because if if you find a place
- 33:32Speaker 1: where they all want to be, I mean I hunted,
- 33:34Speaker 1: I grew up hunting Western Ohio. Like there's more pressure
- 33:38Speaker 1: there than you know than anywhere else. I've been to
- 33:41Speaker 1: this point for white tails, and there's small woodlots where
- 33:45Speaker 1: people would go in and hunt. No, yeah, they'll bump
- 33:48Speaker 1: them out of betting areas and then maybe gone for
- 33:49Speaker 1: a couple of days. But if you find that best spot,
- 33:52Speaker 1: like there's nowhere. If there's nowhere better like that, they're
- 33:54Speaker 1: gonna come back to it because it has all the
- 33:56Speaker 1: factors that they need. You know, they may leave for
- 33:58Speaker 1: a few days or something, or maybe even a week,
- 34:01Speaker 1: but at some point, you know, if all the deer
- 34:04Speaker 1: feel comfortable there, if it's a pretty well set up
- 34:07Speaker 1: bedding area with all the factors that they need, and
- 34:09Speaker 1: go to scape routes, then they're going to come back. Now.
- 34:12Speaker 1: Sometimes you know, it just takes a little bit of
- 34:14Speaker 1: weird tactics to find that. Now, would you agree with
- 34:17Speaker 1: this though that going about it in that kind of way,
- 34:21Speaker 1: It's it's high risk, high reward, right, So you definitely
- 34:25Speaker 1: could have that. Like you said, you might bump them
- 34:27Speaker 1: out of there for a few days, or you might
- 34:29Speaker 1: get a buck that maybe he's gonna stick around there,
- 34:31Speaker 1: but he's just not gonna move during daylight. He might
- 34:33Speaker 1: be back to that bed well before daylight in the morning, etcetera, etcetera.
- 34:37Speaker 1: So I think there's a lot of people that are
- 34:39Speaker 1: probably listening to this and they're like, oh, that's crazy.
- 34:42Speaker 1: I'm never gonna do that, because you know, you're supposed
- 34:44Speaker 1: to have the sanctuary and you leave these deer untouched.
- 34:46Speaker 1: Blah blah blah. Um would you would you say that
- 34:52Speaker 1: if you're hunting, if you've got like one little spot
- 34:55Speaker 1: that you can hunt, You've got your twenty acre property
- 34:58Speaker 1: at home, and that's the one spot you hunt, maybe
- 35:01Speaker 1: you don't want to go in there and do this
- 35:02Speaker 1: kind of thing all the time because you're gonna blow
- 35:04Speaker 1: it out. But if you're in a situation you're at
- 35:07Speaker 1: where you're in public line, you're just there seven days,
- 35:09Speaker 1: so it's you've got nothing to lose because you need
- 35:11Speaker 1: to get it done now. Or I feel like what
- 35:14Speaker 1: you've got going on in Iowa is you guys are
- 35:16Speaker 1: really aggressive, but you have lots and lots and lots
- 35:20Speaker 1: of different spots. Same thing like Dan Infall. He's super aggressive.
- 35:23Speaker 1: But if you blow out Spot A, that's fine because
- 35:26Speaker 1: I'm going to Spot B and then spots C and
- 35:28Speaker 1: D E F G. I mean, is that the right
- 35:30Speaker 1: way to think about this? No, it is. I guess
- 35:33Speaker 1: I maybe should have said that beforehand. Um, And and
- 35:37Speaker 1: I guess I've uh, I've always been this way, even
- 35:42Speaker 1: you know, as soon as I got my driver's license,
- 35:44Speaker 1: I was going to go to a place that I
- 35:46Speaker 1: was going to get away from Western Ohio like to
- 35:48Speaker 1: where I had had that option, Um, it has. I
- 35:53Speaker 1: guess if you're gonna hunt aggressively, I think that you
- 35:57Speaker 1: have to put yourself in a situation where, now, whether
- 36:00Speaker 1: it's funny public or private. You know, maybe you've got
- 36:03Speaker 1: multiple different pieces of private land and some public mixed
- 36:07Speaker 1: in or all public, or just a ton of pieces
- 36:10Speaker 1: of private land. You have to have multiple different areas
- 36:13Speaker 1: that you can go to. You have to be able
- 36:15Speaker 1: to balance, and that's that's the key. Um. You know,
- 36:21Speaker 1: we we do these aggressive tactics, and but like you said,
- 36:26Speaker 1: we've got so many places that will never touch in
- 36:29Speaker 1: a season that we've scouted in the past, and we've got,
- 36:32Speaker 1: you know, ideas of how we would hunt it, but
- 36:35Speaker 1: there's just not simply not enough time for it. And
- 36:37Speaker 1: I think that if you're going to hunt aggressively like this,
- 36:40Speaker 1: then you should have lots of different options. And I
- 36:45Speaker 1: think that there's ways to hunt aggressively like this with
- 36:49Speaker 1: not as many options as you know maybe we have
- 36:53Speaker 1: or or even your your buddy has. But you know,
- 36:57Speaker 1: I think that at some point throughout the season, you know,
- 37:00Speaker 1: it is always worth getting aggressive. Um. I just if
- 37:04Speaker 1: there's one pet peeve I have. It's just people being like,
- 37:07Speaker 1: I gotta wait, I gotta you know, the wind is
- 37:09Speaker 1: just not perfect. Well, sometimes you gotta get in there
- 37:12Speaker 1: when it's when it's the time is right and it
- 37:16Speaker 1: I guess it's just I think that people. Uh and
- 37:20Speaker 1: and again like myself included, Like I think all this
- 37:24Speaker 1: because of like all the times that I just thought
- 37:27Speaker 1: I was being careful, but in reality I was just
- 37:29Speaker 1: like just getting in such a rust that the deer
- 37:32Speaker 1: were patterning me. I wasn't changing it up enough. YEA
- 37:36Speaker 1: so quick question here. You know, on top of being aggressive,
- 37:41Speaker 1: there's like whether you're aggressive or you're conservative in your
- 37:45Speaker 1: approach to actually going after a deer, there's still some
- 37:48Speaker 1: preparation that has to happen on the front end of
- 37:52Speaker 1: of that, you know. And what that sounds like you're
- 37:55Speaker 1: doing is this scouting at a very high and fast
- 37:58Speaker 1: level to locate them all break break that, break that
- 38:02Speaker 1: down for us and kind of tell us what what
- 38:05Speaker 1: that scouting, that speed scouting is like for you guys. Yeah, So, um,
- 38:11Speaker 1: I guess I guess when we go into an area,
- 38:18Speaker 1: we really try to focus on set. Like again, setting
- 38:21Speaker 1: up on that that hot sign or finding that hot time.
- 38:25Speaker 1: And I always my best way to explain like what
- 38:29Speaker 1: exactly we're looking for is the highest concentration of the
- 38:36Speaker 1: best sign in that area. So you've got an idea
- 38:39Speaker 1: of what your dear density is like in the um
- 38:43Speaker 1: properties that you hunt. And you know what when you
- 38:47Speaker 1: you know, you know what it looks like when there's
- 38:49Speaker 1: a bunch of bucks in an area. You know, you
- 38:51Speaker 1: kind of have that idea of how many rubs you know,
- 38:53Speaker 1: per acre, there are, how many scrapes per acre there
- 38:56Speaker 1: are Like when you when you when when you looking
- 39:00Speaker 1: for that hot sign, when it really jumps out at
- 39:04Speaker 1: you of like holy cow, Like there's scrapes, there's rubs,
- 39:08Speaker 1: there's tracks, there's bucks, there's those there's all the deer
- 39:11Speaker 1: kind of you know, getting they're all just kind of
- 39:15Speaker 1: in this small area. He kind of you know what,
- 39:19Speaker 1: you know, the difference of that versus you know a
- 39:22Speaker 1: little bit aside. Does that make sense? Like like all
- 39:26Speaker 1: of a sudden for that area for that deer density,
- 39:29Speaker 1: like there's max sign and when you find that, it's
- 39:33Speaker 1: just like whoa, you know, it almost smells like bucketing there,
- 39:37Speaker 1: Like there's the scrapes, there's rubs beds, and that's that's
- 39:41Speaker 1: what you know we're really looking for is that highest
- 39:44Speaker 1: concentration of deer sign. And you know how long how
- 39:49Speaker 1: long are you in that area until you end up
- 39:52Speaker 1: bailing and going to the next spot. Um it really depends. UM.
- 39:59Speaker 1: I would say, if it looks really good, you know,
- 40:02Speaker 1: we'll get in there and we kind of ease our way.
- 40:04Speaker 1: Like for example, a lot of times they have a
- 40:07Speaker 1: betting area that we've previously scalted in mind, so you know,
- 40:11Speaker 1: we know there's a good you know, betting area deep
- 40:15Speaker 1: in this piece of public or maybe there's two or
- 40:17Speaker 1: three along the way, and as we're scouting through there,
- 40:20Speaker 1: we're just kind of hitting the the down wind side
- 40:23Speaker 1: of that betting area, just kind of skirting mouth skirts
- 40:25Speaker 1: that it's looking for good sign coming out of it.
- 40:28Speaker 1: If we hit it at the first one, then you know,
- 40:31Speaker 1: we'll set up there for the day. And then if
- 40:34Speaker 1: but if we don't hit it on the first one,
- 40:35Speaker 1: we'll go to the next one. And you know, it
- 40:38Speaker 1: just gives kind of a Sometimes it's a day to
- 40:41Speaker 1: day thing. Sometimes it's a in one hunt you may
- 40:43Speaker 1: cover two or three betting area that's just trying to
- 40:45Speaker 1: find the right one that's got that fine. Um. Sometimes
- 40:48Speaker 1: we'll sit on the same betting area you know, for
- 40:51Speaker 1: multiple days. It's something, um, we haven't done a ton
- 40:54Speaker 1: of in the past. You know, some of the bucks
- 40:57Speaker 1: that we've shot in the past few years have been, um,
- 41:01Speaker 1: you know, kind of hunting a betting area repetitively until
- 41:06Speaker 1: you know the gives you the right opportunity. But a
- 41:09Speaker 1: lot of it are a lot of the bucks we've
- 41:12Speaker 1: shot the past few years have been the first time fits.
- 41:16Speaker 1: But something that I'm a little bit more interested in.
- 41:18Speaker 1: It's just like seeing how much we can get away with,
- 41:21Speaker 1: like how much it actually takes to drive the deer
- 41:24Speaker 1: out of an area. This year, I'd like to try
- 41:26Speaker 1: to focus on one or a couple of betting areas
- 41:29Speaker 1: or a general spot you know, for three or four
- 41:31Speaker 1: or five days at a time and just see, you know,
- 41:33Speaker 1: just kind of push it a little bit and see
- 41:35Speaker 1: what happens. Just try to learn something from that. But
- 41:38Speaker 1: I guess again, this day to day spots spot. Now, Now,
- 41:42Speaker 1: when you're you're doing this in season scouting, you're walking along,
- 41:45Speaker 1: you find one of these betting areas where you're seeing
- 41:48Speaker 1: that hot sight, you're seeing a lot that the concentration
- 41:51Speaker 1: is right, it's uh, yeah, this is going to be
- 41:53Speaker 1: a spot we need to hit. Now, walk me through
- 41:56Speaker 1: the thought process from that moment on, like what are
- 41:58Speaker 1: you looking for to help determinal where do we need
- 42:01Speaker 1: to set up? How do we think they're going to
- 42:02Speaker 1: come out of here? Um, what's what's that next step from? Okay, yeah,
- 42:07Speaker 1: this is a great area to finding that perfect spot
- 42:10Speaker 1: within the spot that you're gonna actually sit in. How
- 42:12Speaker 1: you approach that? Yeah? So UM. I can actually use
- 42:17Speaker 1: an example from Nebraska from this season, which is actually
- 42:21Speaker 1: ends up being where I UM ended up getting the
- 42:24Speaker 1: buck um this year. The first day we went in there,
- 42:29Speaker 1: there was a piece that was there's a road that
- 42:33Speaker 1: went through the middle of it that was just public access,
- 42:36Speaker 1: like you could park it multiple different pull offs down
- 42:38Speaker 1: this road. It was just the sand road that went
- 42:40Speaker 1: through the piece. And we ended up driving down that
- 42:44Speaker 1: road and just trying to get a feel for the habitat,
- 42:48Speaker 1: and we jumped a couple of bucks and one of
- 42:50Speaker 1: them was the one I ended up killing. But we're
- 42:53Speaker 1: like that's a big one, Like that's the biggest one.
- 42:55Speaker 1: We've seen the whole trip, and we kind of freaked
- 42:57Speaker 1: out ended up going act turning around, going back to
- 43:03Speaker 1: the first pull off, and then going back right back
- 43:07Speaker 1: after him. Like they had just jumped out of that
- 43:09Speaker 1: betting area. But we suspected they weren't going to go
- 43:12Speaker 1: far and they would probably come right back, you know,
- 43:15Speaker 1: just just running away from from the vehicle. We didn't
- 43:18Speaker 1: figure that they would leave the county, you know. So
- 43:22Speaker 1: how we approached that is like there's a little bit
- 43:24Speaker 1: different situation, Like we didn't find the sign, but but
- 43:27Speaker 1: we knew they were in there. So how we went
- 43:32Speaker 1: about approaching it is like we just kind of got
- 43:34Speaker 1: to a high point so where we could see that
- 43:36Speaker 1: betting area and we could see kind of how the
- 43:38Speaker 1: land laid, and from that Logan and I have a
- 43:41Speaker 1: guy that I was with, we just were glassing that
- 43:44Speaker 1: whole area and we're looking for just little terrain features
- 43:47Speaker 1: that in ways that you know, just a little mini funnels,
- 43:50Speaker 1: you know, just where we would expect trails to kind
- 43:52Speaker 1: of go through this piece of land to this little
- 43:56Speaker 1: creek bottom. And we just kind of kept getting the
- 44:00Speaker 1: different high points and looking at it from different angles,
- 44:03Speaker 1: and then we eventually were like, okay, this is the
- 44:05Speaker 1: best funnel from right on this point of the creek.
- 44:07Speaker 1: End up getting down there, and one of the two
- 44:09Speaker 1: bucks that we jumped was ended up coming right down
- 44:12Speaker 1: one of those trails and he caught our wind before
- 44:15Speaker 1: we got a good shot at him. But you know,
- 44:18Speaker 1: essentially the plan worked. He was coming right now in
- 44:21Speaker 1: the place, right down the pipe, right where we expected
- 44:24Speaker 1: him to. Um, just gonna win win. Kind of messed
- 44:27Speaker 1: us up, but well, totally messed us up, but you know,
- 44:30Speaker 1: that was That's one example was just kind of getting
- 44:33Speaker 1: a field by looking at it. Okay, you know how's
- 44:36Speaker 1: that terrain lay? And just from past experiences, you know,
- 44:38Speaker 1: you get pretty good idea of how they are going
- 44:42Speaker 1: to work through a creek bottom. But I guess in
- 44:45Speaker 1: a different situation, if I was walking through an area
- 44:48Speaker 1: scouting it, um, like like the one I shot in
- 44:52Speaker 1: Nebraska last year, It's like, I'm in that area and
- 44:55Speaker 1: seeing all that sign I'm looking at how the trails
- 44:59Speaker 1: are oriented in there, looking at how the beds are oriented,
- 45:02Speaker 1: thinking about which wind does deer betting there on? And
- 45:07Speaker 1: you know, in that situation with the one I shot
- 45:09Speaker 1: last year in Nebraska. A lot of those beds were
- 45:12Speaker 1: set up for south wind. They were kind of cover
- 45:16Speaker 1: it back facing to the north. So with that south wind,
- 45:22Speaker 1: they've got covered behind them, wind coming you know, at
- 45:25Speaker 1: their back, and they're looking out into an open area.
- 45:28Speaker 1: So with that kind of info, um, that's how we
- 45:33Speaker 1: decided to hunt it. And and that's the wind that
- 45:36Speaker 1: he was in there on and we ended up getting him.
- 45:38Speaker 1: You know, it's just a lot of different factors. I
- 45:42Speaker 1: I'm really sometimes I'm bad at I guess putting, like
- 45:46Speaker 1: thinking of all of the situations because it's always so different.
- 45:50Speaker 1: You know, sometimes you're just walking to an area and
- 45:52Speaker 1: you're like, all right, you know up on this ridge
- 45:55Speaker 1: in you know, in Big timber Um. You know, maybe
- 46:00Speaker 1: a side hill has you know where there's a bench
- 46:03Speaker 1: and maybe there's an old clear cut down there. Well
- 46:06Speaker 1: there's a hard transition line there, and right off the
- 46:08Speaker 1: hard transition transition line there's just tons of you know,
- 46:11Speaker 1: heavily used scrapes. It's like, well, you know, those bucks
- 46:15Speaker 1: are working that transition line. They're scraping down along through there.
- 46:19Speaker 1: And that's as simple as it is. Like you hit
- 46:21Speaker 1: that that scrape line, you're like Okay, if we need
- 46:23Speaker 1: to back out of here and you know, come back
- 46:25Speaker 1: on the time when we feel like we're gonna hunt
- 46:27Speaker 1: the scrapes or maybe hunt it that day. You know,
- 46:29Speaker 1: every situation just vary so much, but you know, our
- 46:33Speaker 1: main mission is to be right where you know, the
- 46:37Speaker 1: most hot sign kind of comes together. Yeah, you just
- 46:40Speaker 1: mentioned something I was gonna. I was kind of curious
- 46:42Speaker 1: about your opinion on which is the question. Right there
- 46:45Speaker 1: you find the sign, do you hunt right away or
- 46:47Speaker 1: do you say, well, I gotta give it a few
- 46:49Speaker 1: days to rest because I just came in here. Maybe
- 46:51Speaker 1: you hung a stand or whatever it might be. I've
- 46:54Speaker 1: always kind of been in mind that you should hunt
- 46:55Speaker 1: it right then and there because maybe you can get
- 46:57Speaker 1: them coming back the one time that they don't know
- 47:00Speaker 1: something was there. But what's what's your take on that?
- 47:03Speaker 1: Um Ya, again, it varies. I'd kind of the same
- 47:09Speaker 1: way that you just said, Like I like to get aggressive,
- 47:12Speaker 1: Like I like, I like to try to break all
- 47:14Speaker 1: the rules, you know what I mean? Like I like to,
- 47:17Speaker 1: um wouldn't bump it and then go set up on
- 47:20Speaker 1: a you know that day, you know whatever, like just
- 47:23Speaker 1: do something weird and just try something different. But a
- 47:26Speaker 1: lot of times I would say if if it depends
- 47:30Speaker 1: on how much impact you feel like you've got. You know,
- 47:32Speaker 1: if you just kind of get into the edge of
- 47:33Speaker 1: it and you're still down down wind of all the
- 47:36Speaker 1: bedding or where you think the majority of the dr are,
- 47:39Speaker 1: and you pick up on a real hot straight right
- 47:42Speaker 1: on the edge of the you know, a transition line
- 47:45Speaker 1: that you think a buck's gonna show up there and daylight,
- 47:48Speaker 1: you know, hunt it right then, just hanging a stand
- 47:50Speaker 1: up and hunt it or set up on the ground,
- 47:52Speaker 1: whatever you want to do. Um, But if you go
- 47:54Speaker 1: through a whole bedding area, you're bumping deer, you know,
- 47:58Speaker 1: there's a high impact. You're leaving your sin all over
- 48:00Speaker 1: in the middle of the betting area. A lot of
- 48:02Speaker 1: times in that situation, give it like generally two days.
- 48:07Speaker 1: So you know, just saying, let's say on November six,
- 48:12Speaker 1: we'd go blow up the world in a betting area,
- 48:14Speaker 1: but where like that that's the hot stuff, Like that's
- 48:16Speaker 1: the best stuff we've seen in the past week. Then
- 48:20Speaker 1: maybe on like November nine, we would go back in
- 48:23Speaker 1: there on the wind that we felt was right and
- 48:25Speaker 1: hope for the best. You know, it just depends on
- 48:28Speaker 1: how much that impact, how much you feel that impact,
- 48:31Speaker 1: he's going to throw the deer off. Yeah, my foilow
- 48:35Speaker 1: you So so continue with that Nebraska situation here this
- 48:39Speaker 1: year you found these bucks, you moved in there, you
- 48:43Speaker 1: had the one catcher wind, what was your plan from
- 48:45Speaker 1: there and out? So there was another little factor in
- 48:50Speaker 1: there that I haven't included yet. There was some other
- 48:52Speaker 1: guys who have actually just just got ahold of me.
- 48:57Speaker 1: They just messaged me today and thought that was pretty cool.
- 49:01Speaker 1: Kind of got to figure out what, you know, what
- 49:03Speaker 1: they were doing a little bit more and what we
- 49:05Speaker 1: were doing, and just trying to communicate a little bit better.
- 49:08Speaker 1: But there was these other guys that were hunting in there,
- 49:11Speaker 1: and they were going way back deeper into into the
- 49:15Speaker 1: piece of public. So they were driving past the betting
- 49:19Speaker 1: right past this betting area that we were hunting. And
- 49:22Speaker 1: the reason that we found these years because we drove
- 49:25Speaker 1: past the betting area and they jumped up. So when
- 49:28Speaker 1: we were making that first move that first night, they
- 49:31Speaker 1: came down that road and Logan, who was with me,
- 49:34Speaker 1: ran up there and asked, you know, if they would um,
- 49:38Speaker 1: if they would just like hold off or at least
- 49:40Speaker 1: just park at the first pull off and not you know,
- 49:44Speaker 1: go past them, because we knew that they were in there,
- 49:46Speaker 1: and very very kindly of them, they were like, yeah,
- 49:50Speaker 1: go for it, make a move on them, and and uh,
- 49:53Speaker 1: you know, we'll just hold off of the evening so
- 49:56Speaker 1: that we're super thankful for that, super super are cool
- 50:00Speaker 1: with them to do that, and ended up making that move.
- 50:04Speaker 1: But we knew that those guys were hunting back there,
- 50:07Speaker 1: so that they were driving past that that betting area
- 50:10Speaker 1: a lot, and you know, at least four times a day,
- 50:15Speaker 1: and we waited a couple of days. I guess. We
- 50:19Speaker 1: hunted it that next morning and didn't see much. So
- 50:22Speaker 1: you know, we we went through that that whole or
- 50:26Speaker 1: deal where we all we jumped them, almost got the one,
- 50:28Speaker 1: and then the next morning we hunted it, but nothing
- 50:31Speaker 1: really came back into that betting area. So we gave
- 50:34Speaker 1: it a couple of days, I think two full days,
- 50:38Speaker 1: and we went in there on the fifth day of season.
- 50:43Speaker 1: I guess it had been two and a half days
- 50:45Speaker 1: something like that, doesn't really matter about two days. Went
- 50:48Speaker 1: back in there on the fifth day of season in
- 50:50Speaker 1: the afternoon and pulled in and I was like, oh, man, like,
- 50:56Speaker 1: it looks like there's been people back in here and
- 50:59Speaker 1: that broke there. Know, there's tracks on the sand and
- 51:03Speaker 1: vehicle tracks, and we're like, well, let's try it anyway,
- 51:07Speaker 1: you know, we gotta know, I just gotta at least
- 51:10Speaker 1: at least market off that you know, they've they've moved
- 51:12Speaker 1: on and they've moved to a different betting area. And
- 51:17Speaker 1: walked back, got about halfway back there and saw were
- 51:20Speaker 1: those tire tracks that actually stopped and turned around. Well,
- 51:24Speaker 1: it must have been somebody. It must have been somebody
- 51:26Speaker 1: else other than those guys, because I now know that
- 51:29Speaker 1: they had left after day three, so they hadn't been
- 51:32Speaker 1: back there for a couple of days either. So get
- 51:37Speaker 1: back there and all of a sudden it goes from
- 51:39Speaker 1: fresh tire tracks on the sand access road to like
- 51:43Speaker 1: nothing but deer tracks on top of old tire tracks.
- 51:46Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, we might be in business here. And
- 51:50Speaker 1: we crept up to the very spot where we turned around,
- 51:55Speaker 1: and then those gear jumped up. That first day, I
- 51:58Speaker 1: crawled up and I decided I did that. I was
- 52:00Speaker 1: gonna just look into that betting area glass down there
- 52:05Speaker 1: until I saw a deer moving and if I knew
- 52:08Speaker 1: a deer was down in there, at least just even one,
- 52:11Speaker 1: even just a flicker of a tail, that was gonna
- 52:13Speaker 1: be enough for us to kind of make a play
- 52:16Speaker 1: on him get to a setup. I didn't want to.
- 52:19Speaker 1: I didn't want to go right back into it and
- 52:22Speaker 1: like wasting, I guess, waste a whole hunt if I
- 52:25Speaker 1: didn't think that they were deer in there. So I
- 52:27Speaker 1: decided I would sit there for an hour, glass right
- 52:30Speaker 1: into that betting area kind of had a pretty good
- 52:32Speaker 1: advantage to where I could see down into it, and
- 52:37Speaker 1: that was that was my whole plan, was look at
- 52:40Speaker 1: it for an hour. If it's no good, we're just
- 52:41Speaker 1: gonna keep moving and trying to figure out where they've
- 52:45Speaker 1: moved to. So I'm laying there glassing with my buyeose,
- 52:50Speaker 1: just down into this betting area. I'm not very far
- 52:52Speaker 1: from it. I'm only, you know, oh, probably sixty yards
- 52:58Speaker 1: from the edge of it. But I just, you know,
- 53:01Speaker 1: I had the wind right and I was just peeking
- 53:03Speaker 1: over from a high point and looking down in there.
- 53:06Speaker 1: I wasn't seeing anything. It's kind of starting to get
- 53:10Speaker 1: a little bit of discourage, and all of a sudden,
- 53:12Speaker 1: I looked down and that big one was laying there
- 53:15Speaker 1: seventy yards from me, looking the other way, and the
- 53:20Speaker 1: whole Yeah, he was there the whole time. He was
- 53:23Speaker 1: just betted, and uh. I was like, not no way.
- 53:27Speaker 1: I'm looking at that right. I'm like, there's no way.
- 53:31Speaker 1: And his ear flicked and I was like, you gotta
- 53:34Speaker 1: be kidding me, Like he's he's seventy yards from me,
- 53:37Speaker 1: like has no idea and logan kind of back behind me,
- 53:41Speaker 1: hiding a little bit more. I peek back over and
- 53:45Speaker 1: I like give him the signal like buck betted. You know.
- 53:48Speaker 1: He calls up to me and I show him where
- 53:50Speaker 1: the buck is and he sees it. He starts filming,
- 53:54Speaker 1: and I I knew that there was no way that
- 53:56Speaker 1: we were both gonna be able to get down in there,
- 53:58Speaker 1: like you know, we were are already closed and now
- 54:01Speaker 1: granted we could have I guess, I guess a million
- 54:05Speaker 1: things went through my head in like a pretty short
- 54:07Speaker 1: period of time because they didn't want to wait around
- 54:08Speaker 1: too long, like either got to go for this thing
- 54:12Speaker 1: right now in his bed, or we're gonna have to
- 54:15Speaker 1: loop around and try to set up on a spot
- 54:17Speaker 1: where he's going to uh, you know, maybe walk past,
- 54:22Speaker 1: but now you're talking if you go set up now
- 54:24Speaker 1: you're talking about he can go just about any direction.
- 54:27Speaker 1: You know, he gets up out of that bed. Now,
- 54:30Speaker 1: we could have got really really close and put our
- 54:32Speaker 1: odds pretty high, but it's like, we know literally right
- 54:35Speaker 1: where he's at right now. So I just kind of studied,
- 54:38Speaker 1: you know, how the wind was playing through the creek bottom,
- 54:42Speaker 1: looked at, you know, as best I could tell the
- 54:44Speaker 1: way his body was oriented in that bed, and I
- 54:48Speaker 1: started kind of making plans of Okay, how can I
- 54:50Speaker 1: approach this to where he's not gonna see me or
- 54:53Speaker 1: smell me or hear me coming, And new Logan would
- 54:57Speaker 1: be able to film him from up on top there
- 55:00Speaker 1: where I had spotted him from. So it was like
- 55:04Speaker 1: I was like, all right, do you see that seedar
- 55:06Speaker 1: right there? That's where I'm gonna try to get to.
- 55:09Speaker 1: I had ranged him the buck and he was at
- 55:11Speaker 1: seventy and that seater was at fifty five. So I thought,
- 55:17Speaker 1: if I can get to that feater, it looks like
- 55:19Speaker 1: I'll have an opening and it looks like they'll be
- 55:21Speaker 1: broadside to that spot that I'm gonna get to. So
- 55:26Speaker 1: so like the next hour and a half, I just crawled,
- 55:28Speaker 1: and I mean just painful, probably about two hours actually,
- 55:33Speaker 1: and only you know, maybe a grand total of you know,
- 55:37Speaker 1: forty some yards. I've been a little bit further than
- 55:41Speaker 1: about fifty yards. And I crawled and I crawled and
- 55:44Speaker 1: I crawled, and I was like just every time the
- 55:47Speaker 1: wind would blow, I'd picked my bow up and I'm
- 55:49Speaker 1: just mass draft down in front of me, and I
- 55:52Speaker 1: was on um. I would just kind of try to
- 55:55Speaker 1: follow any tiny little low spot I could get to.
- 55:57Speaker 1: I mean, just being super meticulous us about every little
- 56:01Speaker 1: thing that I did, because it's like I just don't
- 56:04Speaker 1: want to spook him, you know, at the very least,
- 56:06Speaker 1: I don't want to spook him and blow him out
- 56:08Speaker 1: of here, because like we now know that he's been
- 56:10Speaker 1: in here twice, and like we got a really good chance.
- 56:13Speaker 1: But I also thought I had a really good chance
- 56:15Speaker 1: that I could get up to that theater that I
- 56:16Speaker 1: actually be able to get shot. So after like two hours,
- 56:21Speaker 1: somewhere between an hour and a half two hours, like
- 56:23Speaker 1: eventually get to that seedar and I just barely peek
- 56:26Speaker 1: up at Logan and he's still film in that spot,
- 56:28Speaker 1: and I'm like well, he must still be there. So
- 56:32Speaker 1: I peek around the right side of the feeder and
- 56:33Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm gone out see him over there. I'm
- 56:36Speaker 1: glassing down there. I thought maybe maybe now and I'm lower,
- 56:39Speaker 1: I can't see, you know, quite as well as I
- 56:41Speaker 1: could from that vantage. I looked and lost and looked,
- 56:45Speaker 1: and finally was like, well, I'm gonna have to try
- 56:47Speaker 1: to get to the other side of the trees. Like
- 56:49Speaker 1: crawled around on the side of the tree, I mean,
- 56:50Speaker 1: just painfully slow. And as soon as I poked my
- 56:53Speaker 1: head around, I was like, yelp, right there he is,
- 56:56Speaker 1: and I mean, he's close, can I I hit him
- 57:00Speaker 1: with the ring and he still looking the other way
- 57:02Speaker 1: that and I hit him with the range finder nineteen yards,
- 57:07Speaker 1: hit it again, nineteen hit again, nineteen good enough, So
- 57:11Speaker 1: I've putting my release on. Well, a bunch of sand
- 57:16Speaker 1: stuck in my release. It started panicking because I couldn't
- 57:18Speaker 1: get my release open. Like got that figured out. And
- 57:21Speaker 1: right as that happened, the other buck that we almost
- 57:23Speaker 1: got a few nights prior stands up out of his
- 57:26Speaker 1: bed and starts grunting walking towards the big one. And
- 57:29Speaker 1: this is all while I can't get my release open,
- 57:31Speaker 1: which I did, like I said, get figured out, but
- 57:34Speaker 1: finally get my release on this little buck, well, you
- 57:37Speaker 1: know Buck, the other buck, I don't want to say
- 57:39Speaker 1: little bucks that have shot him a couple of times,
- 57:40Speaker 1: shot him any other day. He's walking right at the
- 57:45Speaker 1: bigger one, grunting, and he walks right up to him.
- 57:48Speaker 1: In the whole time, the big Bucks is just like
- 57:51Speaker 1: totally disregarding him. He's like totally ignoring him, and I'm
- 57:57Speaker 1: just got my my my set on this hole. I
- 58:01Speaker 1: know he's gonna be bron side when he stands up.
- 58:03Speaker 1: I know that his vitals should be exposed in this
- 58:06Speaker 1: you know, perfect little hole right there about the size
- 58:09Speaker 1: of the basketball, and I'm just focusing on that spot,
- 58:14Speaker 1: not moving at Little Buck walks to like ken yards
- 58:17Speaker 1: from me and is looking at Logan. Can see Logan
- 58:21Speaker 1: on top of the hill. Can't tell what he is,
- 58:23Speaker 1: starts kind of seeing me. This all took probably ten
- 58:26Speaker 1: fifteen minutes, and he's looking at be looking at Logan,
- 58:30Speaker 1: stops a little bit, eventually just gives up on it
- 58:33Speaker 1: because he can't figure it out. We're both wearing gilly dudes,
- 58:36Speaker 1: and he just kind of walks around, that buck walks
- 58:40Speaker 1: right up to him, put his head on right into
- 58:42Speaker 1: the bed, and then eventually just walked away. And I
- 58:46Speaker 1: was like, I cannot believe he didn't get up, Like
- 58:49Speaker 1: I thought for sure that that little buck would at
- 58:51Speaker 1: least make him stand up for a second. And I
- 58:55Speaker 1: it's like, well, maybe you know it really hated to
- 58:58Speaker 1: be you know, got to to dark, and you know
- 59:01Speaker 1: this buck never stands up. But anyway, I keep sitting
- 59:04Speaker 1: there and I'm just focusing on the spot, and finally,
- 59:07Speaker 1: like stupid, it was almost cost me. I looked back
- 59:10Speaker 1: at Logan, just to make sure that he wasn't like,
- 59:13Speaker 1: you know, having him camera issues or anything, making sure
- 59:16Speaker 1: that he wasn't like calling me off or anything. And
- 59:18Speaker 1: I look at him. Everything looks good, and as I
- 59:21Speaker 1: look back, he's starting to stand up, and I was like,
- 59:24Speaker 1: oh no, Like as soon as he moved, I wanted
- 59:26Speaker 1: to be drawing, like I almost matched up, and he
- 59:30Speaker 1: just stood up and he looked right in my direction.
- 59:32Speaker 1: I mean he was facing me where he was broadside,
- 59:35Speaker 1: but he was you know, his head was looking at me.
- 59:38Speaker 1: And I was just like, well now or never, Like
- 59:40Speaker 1: if he takes one step he's out of that hole,
- 59:42Speaker 1: and I just drew back, putting on him, shot him
- 59:47Speaker 1: and yeah, double along to him. And pretty weird, pretty
- 59:52Speaker 1: weird story. Like I mean, I won't dive into it
- 59:55Speaker 1: too much, and I'm sure there'll be plenty included in
- 59:58Speaker 1: the video if anybody's interested. Guess but it hit him
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: in both lungs and he betted three times. We bumped
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: him once. He betted three times and like almost four
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: yards and it hit him square like ten ring right
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: behind the shoulder. Weirdest thing I've ever seen, very very weird.
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: We can but we could talk about that for a
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: long time. I guess it was wild. Uh, I'll tell
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: you you're a wild man, dude, going in there like
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: that Gilly Suton and crawling for hundreds of yards into there.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: I gotta wonder you said that. You said that this
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: video of the Final Hunt is forty five minutes long.
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: Is it just forty five minutes of you crawling the
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: entire time? I hope it is no, but no, but
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: I'm sure there'll be plenty of that. I'm sure it'll
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: be pretty funny. H It was you know, one of
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: those deals, you know, It was like I know, he's
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: right there, Like I hate I hate leaving dear, like
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: not getting as close to where they are as possible
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: when you know exactly like their exact coordinates, you know. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: I just always think it's silly, like um had a
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: lot of people be like, yeah, it's all a big one.
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: Watched him bed down, and you know we're gonna have
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: to go after him a couple in a couple of
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: days when we get the right winds, Like you watched
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: him bed down and you left, you know, or like
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: you watched him go into a bedding year and you
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: left it like that, you know he's there, you know,
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: if you know right where he's at, like just hunt
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: that spot. And I guess you know, that's kind of
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: what I was What I was thinking about, is like
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: it's like I know, I know I'm gonna be mad
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: if I don't try it. You know, I gotta at
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: least try it, And you know, it's pretty painful, Like
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: it's like I got all kinds of weird stuff still
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: stuck in my body from that crawl, Like there's captus
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: out there. Samber is like you know, whatever else is
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: laying out there on the sand hills and I still
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: got some weird, weird stuff on me, but it was
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: well worth it. Yeah, but uh Dan, what are you?
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: What are you thinking about all this? I think I
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: need to hunt more out of state and buy a
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: guilly suit. Yeah yeah, yeah, I think I think many
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: a guilly suit is well. Just having having that option
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: has really changed my whole perspective on hunting. Um. You know,
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: I'm pretty pretty wired guy. Like I'm drink a lot
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: of coffee, you know, I'm just pretty excited. I feel
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: a lot of jumping around and I'm pretty empty, you know,
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: And I'm not a stand guy, you know, like I did.
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: It just doesn't work for my personality very well. Like
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: I don't like to sit like the guys that can
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: sit all day during the run, Like I have so
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: much respect for that because like I cannot do it.
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: I can't sit for like like that sounds. It's just
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: the thought of it is horrible to me to sit
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: all day in one stand. I don't I mean I've
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: done it a lot, but I don't like it. Yeah
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: that's pretty way, Uh Dan, This might be like a
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: revolutionary idea for you, Dan, because because Dan has got
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: these bad knees because of how old he is, he's
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: not able to do those all day restits either. So
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: maybe this is the key. Maybe you need this gilly
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: suit tactic. Um, my luck, I just fall asleep in
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: the grass. Yeah, I do plenty of that, man, no
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: doubt falling in the grass a lot. So you gotta
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: you gotta tell us more though about what you're how
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: you're pulling off these groundstocks and everything, because I know
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: you did this in Iowa last year too. Um, talk
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: to us a little bit about just the things that
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: you're thinking about to make that work. How you're going
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: about the still hunting deal, um, how the gilly suits
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: helping you? Anything else like that. But first, let's take
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: our last break of the day to thank our friends
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: at white Tail Properties. And white Tail Properties just launched
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: a new video on their YouTube channel in that land
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: Beat YouTube series I've been talking about, and this one's
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: pretty interesting. It's called Broadhead Myths Debunked and it goes
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: through talks to an archery expert who walks us through
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: how he went and tested all the broadheads on the
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: market to see which one flew the best, which were
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: the most consistent, What are the best broadheads to use
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: out there? He shares us as results in this video,
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: they are not going to be what you expect. It's
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: kind of surprise result he's got there. It's very interesting.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: Highly recommend checking it out, especially if your season hasn't
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: opened yet. They're still trying to figure out what broadheads
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: are gonna shoot this year. Definitely want to check this
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: one out, so heading over to the white Tail Properties
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: YouTube channel check out the Broadhead Myths Debunked video, and
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: you can also learn more about what white Tail Properties
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: has got going on by going to white Tail properties
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: dot com. Yeah. Well, I've always had like an interest
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: in hunting on the ground because, like I said, I've
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: been you know, I've just been too impatient to sit
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: tree stands setups for you know, a whole season. And
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: you know, I really like I started watching White Tail
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: Adrenaline a few years ago, like, man, like that just
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: looks so fun and like I really really was inspired by,
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: you know, just something different. You know. It wasn't you know,
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: and they don't talk a lot about exactly like all
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: their theories and that's what like how they're approaching it.
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: But like you know, it was like it's working, and
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: that's really all that I needed to know is like
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: somebody's out there trying it, and like I want to
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: try that too, just because you know, I want to
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: do something different. I want to just be limited to
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: tree stands, and I also just like to move around
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: a lot. You know. That was kind of the you know,
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: watching those guys was the inspiration to just go for
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: It's like, Okay, somebody's doing it out there, and I,
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: you know, when I first started doing it, I think
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: that you know, my friends kind of thought that it
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: was stupid and a little crazy. But once we once
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: we started doing it and we were wearing those gilli suits,
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: like deer cannot figure out what's going on. Like never,
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know that in a setup
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: like where we were actually set up on the ground,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: that deer has ever spotted us, like what they've they've
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: smelled us, but I don't think one's ever actually just
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: picked us off. Now a million times in my life
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: I've had deer picked me off the tree and in high,
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: higher pressured areas or higher pressure states like I'm sure
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: Mark you dealon with in Michigan or like where I
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: grew up in western Ohio, like deer looking for hunters
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: and tree stands, and I see that even here in
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: Iowa in public ground, like we get a deer to
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: it down the end of us. The first thing that
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: they do is look in the trees and they have
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: no idea where we are. And like it's been pretty crazy.
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: I mean that's two guys on the ground hiding and
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: guilies is they cannot figure it out. And they'll be
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: you know, in easy bow rage and they still can't
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: figure out where we're at. And if you think about
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: how you know, what you know, if you've read anything
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: about how white tails can see or um, you know,
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: just there's there's a decent amount of research. I can't
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: see anything but movement very well. And you know what
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: that gillies feel. You're just breaking up that human shape,
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: like you don't have the head and shoulders, and and
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: that I think is ultimately what you know, it's kind
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: of it's really the make or break of it is
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: like if they see your head and shoulders, they're gone.
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: But if they can't see that, and the guilli suit
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: just does an incredible job just you know, um breaking
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: that up. I also have like I don't know, probably
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: close to a foot long hair, so like that helps
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: break up. It's like the gilly haircut. You gotta have
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: that too. Hey, good question. How much does one of
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: those Gilly suits cost? Ah? Man, You know, I don't
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: really know ours. The ones that we got a friend
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: that actually gave them to us, and they were like
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: I think if you look for him on line, you
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: can find them. I want to say, yeah, it's bush
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: rag dot com, and that's where you can find the
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: exact ones that we're wearing. I don't know how much
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: they cost because we didn't actually buy them, but I
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: want to say that there relatively inexpensive, like you know
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: what you would be spending on a tree stand or
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: something like that. Those white tail adrenaline guys, don't they
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: just make them themselves? Like those are homemade? Yeah? Yeah, yeah,
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: And I think like like my friend Jake who works
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: with with us, he um, he's built his own in
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: the past, and his grandma also had one together for
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: him one time. And you know, when when I was
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: growing up, me and my dad always used the leafy suits,
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: um like, especially for turkey hunting. You know those you know,
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: they're basically just have like maple leaves that kind of
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: hang off of them. I think all that stuff will work.
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: Anything really to anything that will match the color of
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: the habitat that you're in, and that's gonna break up
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: that head and shoulders is gonna work. Um, you know something,
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: I guess not to get off the Guilly subject, but
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: kind of see it. I want to. I want to
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: do it without a Guilly now, Like I want to
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: just like wear like a solid like color like tan
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: or brown and just do it without the Guilly because
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: I think it's also it's that's still possible too. It's
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: just a lot of it being aware of your surroundings
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: and like again, trying to get the human shape broken up.
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: And I think the Gilli suit makes that super easy.
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: But I think it would be fun to just you know,
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: try it without a couple of times if see, if
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: you know, it can be pulled off. I mean people
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: are doing it for sure. It's just kind of a
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: kind of a fun challenge I think would be to
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: just kind of go with without even wearing camo. Just
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: wear like dan longsleeve shirt or something. I think they
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: can work. And like I was saying, the wild card,
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: try in the flannel, dude, I think I agree, Dude.
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: I don't think camo is as important as people think
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: it is. Hmm, No, I don't. I don't want at all.
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: I think. Um. I mean, there's all kinds of different
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: camo patterns that guys are wearing out there, and they're
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: all you know, everybody's you know, having success with all
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: different types of stuff. The biggest thing is is just
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: blending with your surroundings as best as you can. And
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: I think some times, I mean, like a lot of
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: people's grandpa's hunted and like red flannels. I mean, my
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: grandpa hunted it. His hunting clothes were red. Was like
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: a red flannel and like you know, bid like tam Bibbs.
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: You know that's both my Grandpa's hunted in that stuff
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: for years. You know. Now they wear camo, but you know,
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: for years and years, that's that's what people hunted in.
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: And like you know that the color red or or
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: you know a hunter orange. You know. So I think
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: sometimes people are like, oh, you can never wear that, well,
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: dare don't see color like we see color. I mean
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: I don't. I'm no expert on that by any means,
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: but like obviously they don't, or they'd be running from
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: every guy that was wearing Hunter orange during gun seasons.
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: Does not stop. I mean they never stopped run. But
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: it's uh yeah, I mean I don't think it's quite
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: as important as some people make it out to be.
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: It's just blending with your surroundings, is so yeah, I think, Dan,
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: what you need to do is just gonna old blue
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: suit all blue. And if you do that, um, I
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: think that's gonna be the ticket to your success. They'll
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: they'll put me up there with the grage then, right, yes,
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: they would if you can pull it off, because that's
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: actually that's like the one color that really does pop
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: to white tails, while orange and red blends and gray
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: blue would be the toughest. So if you if if
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: you end up getting to kill a buck wearing like
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: tan solid stuff, Zach, then yeah, then you really do
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: need to try blue. That'll be like the final test
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: if you can really really fool them. I've read I've
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: read that. I've read that that thing about the blue
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: so you never know, wild card out here breaking rules.
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: So so you, uh, you're wearing the Gillis suit, you're
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: stalking on in these deer do you are you gonna
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: go and use this kind of tactic on any day,
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: or or is it are you waiting for certain conditions,
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: like do you just use this when it's nice and
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: windy or rainy or something like that to break up
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: your sound or what about that? That's actually, yeah, that's
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: a really good question. I would prefer uh, I would
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: prefer probably like rainy, windy days in November, you know,
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: that's when it's the easiest to just like sneak up
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: on a buck just being silly. Um. But at the
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: same time, I always always say, pick the one factor
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: that you can take and use gear advantage. Now, some
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: days I'll use a couple of examples here. Some days,
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: you know, a lot of people would say that you
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: would never want to do it on a still crisp morning.
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: I love still crisp mornings because I can just hear
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: so much. But that's the one factor that I'm taking away.
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: I can't cover as much ground, you know, or I
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: can't maybe go barrel and into a spot quite like
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: I can on you know, the wet, windy day. But
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: if it's cold and crisp and and not much wind,
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: I think you can just hear you are coming way
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: before they can hear you. If you're going slowing up.
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: You just got to change that caden stuff. If you've
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: got a um oh, let's say a day where it's
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: super it's super windy and hot, you know you're gonna
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: just your strategy again, it is gonna change. If it's
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: super windy, you can move super fasty, you can just
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: bounce around of these different areas. Um you know, there's
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: tons and tons of I guess different variations and weather conditions.
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: But you know, I like to just pick that one
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: thing that I guess, that one thing that you can
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: as as the hunter, can focus on beating the deer.
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: App whether that site or sound, there's generally something you
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: can pull from any weather condition and just use that
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: to your advantage. That makes sense. Now, what about your
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: basic Ah, you mentioned that your cadence, how you're slowing
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: it down certain conditions, speeding up in others. You know,
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: I feel like like you did in Nebraska this year
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: and kind of talked about in the past, you're kind
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: of going into a new area and you're you're half scouting,
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: half hunting, walking on the ground like that. Can you
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: you talked about what you're looking for from the scouting standpoint,
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: but from the hunting standpoint, you know how fast you're
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: typically going? How I mean, are you you stopping every
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: five yards and glassing or you cover more ground or
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: kind of what does the actual process look like for
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: you to make this work. Well, there's there's two different
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: there's two different uh totally different type of cadence. Like, well,
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: I guess there's some times variation. I guess that's stupid
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: to say, but the two major differences, there's like the
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: slow one and then there's the fast one. And like
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: the fast one is like generally just getting to a spot.
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: And honestly, the fast one has produced buck sidings just
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: as much as the slow one. And what's going on there?
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: I think a lot of times like just going fast
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: not really caaren like knowing that there's a good stand
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: so we're gonna sump into something. But sometimes I'm kind
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: of purposely doing that, like kind of going a little
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: too fast because if there's one around, I want to know,
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: I want to see him jump up and run or
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: I want to see him stand up and try to
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: figure out what's going on. And my friend Sean and
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: I were not hunt last year where we were doing
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: pretty much exactly that we were. We were playing on
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: going way deeper into this piece of public and you know,
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: we're moving pretty quick down and we're kind of getting
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: just starting to get into you know, where there was
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: the best, you know, best betting habitat, but we were
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: still wanting to go deeper and we were moving pretty
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: quick and a buff heard us. It was one of
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: those windy days. He heard a twig snap and he
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: jumped up and he started looking around. He's like fifty
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: yards away, but he couldn't see us, and like he
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: heard us, but we saw him before he saw it,
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: and he like, you know, he's panicking, he's looking around.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: Ended up watching him go right back into that betting area.
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: Turned out he's with the dough and we just kind
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: of hung with him right in that area, and we
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: almost got him a couple of times. He was right
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: at about forty yards. We just needed him to become
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: a little bit closer. But um, you know that I
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: guess that aggressive cadence that's faster walk. And it's almost
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: like you know Dan Insult talks about like bed stacking
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: or or like stacking up a betting area. It's kind
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: of the same thing, right, Like we're just kind of
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: plowing through or we're not necessarily plowing, We're just moving
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: fast enough that like, if there's be around, we wanted
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: them to kind of know, kind of hear us. And
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: then as we start getting towards those areas that we're
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: really thinking about focusing on, we're gonna slow down to
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: the point of, you know, if you can hear yourself
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: and not hear anything else, you're going too fast. And
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: I'm again, I'm impatient. I have a kind of bad
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: habits of getting going a little bit fast. But if
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: I noticed that I'm doing that, just trying to you know,
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: take a deep breath, calm down, and just like remember
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: that I'm not necessarily trying to get anywhere. I don't
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: have a point B that I need to be at.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: I'm hunting right now, and like I have to be
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: more aware of my surroundings and just calm myself down.
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: And you know when and Sean Sean, my friend Sean Farrendorf, Um,
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: he works for a white Tail property now, but we're
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: he worked at the Midwest white Tail for a little bit,
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: you know him and I kind of he was kind
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: of the first person to be like, yeah, let's try it,
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: you know, let's try, you know, doing more of this
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: still hunting, and it took it took some time for
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: us to really figure out. And he I used to
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: pick on him a lot because he had this tendency
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: of like all of a sudden, he would just be
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: going way too fast, like, dude, you've gotta slow down.
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: Like just remember, you're not trying to get to anywhere specific.
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: You're just you're now hunting. You're now looking for sign,
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: you're looking for deer. You're trying to figure out you know,
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: you know, you're find heaps, set up or just keep
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: and then I think, um, it can vary so much,
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: but you're back, I guess back to your question, like
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: do you glass? You know, yeah, a lot of times
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: we're just taking a few steps, and a lot of
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: times we're doing that right on a deer trail. You know,
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: we're just using the deer trail to keep inching closer
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: to where we think that they're spending their time during
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: the daylight. And you know, you walk a few steps,
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: class listen, sometimes stand there for a few minutes, Sometimes
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: stand there for fifteen minutes. You know, I think if
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: you bump a deer, stand there for fift twenty minutes
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: let things come back down, and you'll find that a
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: lot of times, you know, those deer actually aren't even
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: going that far, Like they may just run up bound
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: fifty yards away and then go right back to what
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: they were doing because they weren't ever actually sure what
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: was that, you know, really going on? That winds in
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: your face and a deer sees you and you're wearing
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: a gilly suit and it's like, well, what the heck
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: is that? It just kind of runs out site. It's
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: gonna forget about you in twenty minutes, I mean a
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: lot of time. And you know, there was a couple
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: of hunts here in Nebraska that we just had where
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: we we literally in this one hunt that we had
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: popped up into this kind of overlooking this little betting area,
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: and I had seen deer betted in their does bettered
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: in their last year, and they got up to the
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: top of the hill, and right as we trusted the hill,
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: a fawn came running up out of the betting area,
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: just totally random, like you know how funds will just
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: kind of start running around like and just playing around.
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure that's what that fun was doing, because
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: it came we crested the hill, and it was cresting
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: right at the same time we were, and it blew
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: and took off run and while another dough stood up
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: at the betting area took off running blowing, and then
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: a few minutes later and went by some other deer
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: stand up accidentally spooked them. They took off blowing. So
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: we just sat there for like fifteen twenty minutes, and
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: sure enough, the buck that we had been hunting back
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: in that area stood up right in the middle of
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: where all those dods had just flushed from, and he
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: just stood up, just his antlers sticking out, and he
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: just scanned that hole area for you know, ten fifteen
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: minutes before he even took a step. And I think that,
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: you know, the mistake comes when you bump one deer,
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: then you can just just get piste off and you
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: just keep going. You're like a you know, and I
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: didn't want to you know, I didn't want to spook
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: any deer. I don't want to bump into anything. Well,
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: you know, don't let that get you discouraged. Just know
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: that the kid we're getting close to more deer probably
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: just slow down, take a minute, sit there, maybe have
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: a snack, drink some water, just kind of hang out
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: for a little bit, because sometimes if you get you know,
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: I think if you get piste off and you just
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: keep plowing through it, you're you are going to continue
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: to bump the deer. But if you let things calm down,
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: settle yourself down a little bit, and just get right
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: back into Caden's after things of you know, I guess
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: calm down and a lot of times you're not hurting
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: as much as if you just keep playing through. Yeah.
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: I love the idea of this because I think one
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: of the things that I mean, if you if you
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: talk to a lot of guys even just or even
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: analyze our own hunts, like me and Dan year after year,
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: one of the things we always come back to is that,
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: you know, maybe we overhunted the spot, or maybe we
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: didn't move fast enough on this new information. We didn't
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: move the stand that day, We waited two days and
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: it was too late. When you're on the ground, there's
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: nothing holding you back from making the move on the fly,
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: being mobile, um, not over hunting the same thing. Uh,
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: you know that, Like you you mentioned earlier, the power
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: of the first set when you're hunt on the ground,
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: like this, you can do that every single hunt. Um,
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: that's it's very appealing. Um. I hope Dan, I hope
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: you do this. I hope you really do this, Dan,
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: because I think this is I think I'm gonna, you know,
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: dabble with it a little bit more myself. I feel like,
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: any way you can, man, go ahead, go ahead. I
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: was gonna say, anyway you can remove obstacles to do
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: in the right thing. It's a good idea. So whether
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: it means we're moving a tree stand completely so it's
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: easier to make those moves and you need to, or
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: you know something I did this year that started testing
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: a saddle because that would make things easier to make
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: a quick move. Um, for sure, I think all those
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: things can help well. And then the fact that go
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: ahead in Iowa, right, I mean the first fifteen to
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: twenty days of October, there's still crops in the fields.
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: So like for me, I can definitely see a scenario
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: like that playing out where I'm just going and hiding
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: in a cornfield or I'm going and hiding in a
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: buffer strip that that could that could open up a
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: whole new can of worms. They're talking about crops being
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: being up versus not up. I mean, if there's ever
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: a time to go in and blow up the world,
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: go blow them up. Bedding in a cornfield. I mean
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: a lot of times, you know, growing up in western Ohio,
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: you know, there's lots of bucks that are spending a
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: lot of time in the corn and like, if there's
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: a better time to go bust them out. I mean,
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: they're not gonna be there when that corn comes down,
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: Like if they're on an island of trees in the
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: middle of the corn field, Like they're gonna bed there
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: pretty consistently until that you know, those you know, factors
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: changed and the corn comes out, and then they're gonna
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: be somewhere completely different. Like you might as well go
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: after him then, because you're definitely not going to get
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: them in the spots, you know. I mean, they're just
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: not spending time in those areas that they will be,
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: you know, a month or two down the road. And
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: I think, and and honestly, the whole reason that I
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: really kind of took this, you know, ground hunting thing
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: and then just kind of ran with it is I
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: want I want to at least could like helps people
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: feel offidite about it. And I'm confident about trying something different.
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: And I'm not saying that it's for everybody. I'm not,
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: but I think that there's a lot of opportunity there
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: that people are missing out on because you know, it's
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: just kind of like that rule book has said for
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: so long, you know, like hunt out of a tree stand,
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: you know, don't don't bump into deer early in the season. Um,
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: you know, don't. I don't know, don't you know, spread
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: your boots down and stuff like, I mean, all that
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: stuff like it's just for me. I yeah, yeah, I would.
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: I would stick with that one. I would not wear
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: a blue But you know, I think, but I think
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: that you know, just having that confidence to be able
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: to try something different, it's really you know, I want
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: I want people to feel okay trying something different. I
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: want them to I want people to feel okay when
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: they bump a buck and try to learn something from
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: it and and not not have a season of I
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: mean I had and and here's the main reason. When
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: I was in college, I got into a rut. I
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: got into you know, kind of a position where how
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: it was getting content. You know, had stands where I
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: killed bucks before I had areas on public land that
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: I you know, it was you know, like consistent spots,
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: and I just limited myself to that stuff and limited
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: myself to these areas that I, you know, min Scaling
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: had been hunting for years and you know it stands
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: I killed bucks in and then it just got stagnant
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: and it's just like nothing was getting The encounters weren't increasing,
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: you know, the um Mount Dear I was shooting was
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: not increasing. It was just stacking and it was all
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: just the same. And I got super set up with that,
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: and you know, just wanted to get outside of you know,
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: my comfort zone a little bit. And and even before
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: I started hunting on the ground, I feel like, you know,
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: we were definitely doing that. Um it's just those years
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: I think back on them and I'm you know, just
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: really disappointed that I didn't start doing it earlier, you know,
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: just trying something different, trying to think outside of the
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: box as much as possible. And you know, since then,
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: the amount of encounters that I've had since I've started
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: thinking outside the box, whether that's tree stand um in,
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: a tree stand on the ground, whatever, that's when the
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: encounters really started skyrocketing, like went from you know maybe
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: at the best years, even like in Iowa, we were
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: you know, let's say, how five really good encounters with
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: the mature buck in Iowa, And then when we started
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: going just like really getting out of the comfort zone
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: and really trying to push the envelope and get close
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: to where these bucks for betting, like being counters, just
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: went like through the roofs. Like it's like every other
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: time we're going out, we're just seeing a box. You know,
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: maybe we're not killing him necessarily, but we're like seeing
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: way more, way more bucks that we're looking to shoot
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: than before. And you know, that really was eye opening
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: to me. Yeah, there's something there's something we said about
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: the fact that lots of times we do kind of
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: limit ourselves by this arbitrary, known way of you're supposed
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: to do it, and you just kind of it's easy
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: to get stuck in that like, Okay, this is what
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: we're supposed to do it, so you just do it
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: that way. But to your point, you know, you see
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: one guy doing a different way, you're like, oh, that
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: that can work. That kind of opens up all these
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: new possibilities. That's that's exciting. So it's been cool to see,
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: you know, what Jared's been doing with what tail drenin,
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: what you're doing with this UM or you know, all
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: sorts of different ideas out there, you know, Andre du Quisto,
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: the bumping dump idea out there that I feel like
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: now Dan and then you guys have been kind of
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: evolving similar tactics around that um a lot of ways
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: it's gonna cat yeah, yeah, And that's you know, I
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: think to your point, Like, I think that just having
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: you know, a playbook with all different types of plays
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: in it is way more effective than just limiting yourself
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: and feeling you're like you're limiting yourself to one one
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: specific tactic, Like like I still like hunting funnels during
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: the rut and I still like hunting. I love one
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: of them. Like one of the best setups I think
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: in the flat river bottom country of Iowa is like
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: get on the river with a perpendicular wind to that
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: river channel and sit there and like a buck is
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: going to cruise down it, especially if you're close to
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: whether it's you know, really good betting habitat like sitting
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: on a river. To me, it's like such an unbelievable tactic.
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: It works out here super well. But like I don't
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: want to just be limited to that play, you know,
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: I don't want to be I personally don't want to
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: sit in the tree stands or seven days straight on
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: funnels like I like to do it occasionally, but I
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: don't want to do it every single day of the season.
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: And and I also don't want to wait for that
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: to be the only opportunity. I guess that makes sense,
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: you know, but that does um. So, two final questions
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: on the ground hunting deal. Um, can you talk about
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: how you're thinking about the wind when you are heading
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: in and then also if you decide to set up
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: from the ground, if you think about wind differently at
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: all than you know if you're hunting in a tree stand.
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: And then the last thing on that front is the
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: kind of a two part question. Um. Part two is
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: talk about actually getting the shot getting drawn back because
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: it sounds like encounters are you know, definitely possible, but
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: it's gotta be a little bit harder to pull off
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: those shots in the ground. Um. So I'm curious about
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: those two things. Yeah, I think those are really good questions.
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: And I think the thing about the wind, I think
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: maybe my answer may may be a little bit different
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: than expected, like what I found them with the wind
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: on the ground. Now I approach it the same way
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: that you would um on you know, going to a
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: tree standard with a tree stand set up, like I'm
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: always going into the wind or across winds, like I
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: don't ever want to have the wind in my back
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: um and a lot. I like cross winds just as
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: much as I like the wind in my face. Um and.
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: And the reason being is is if sometimes I feel
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: like I'm going directly into the wind, that Buck is
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: just betting with his face pointed right at me. You know,
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: you know, if you've if you've watched Buck's bed and, um,
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: you know, almost always they're betting. I wouldn't say always,
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: but they're almost always betting facing down wind. And that's
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: why I kind of like that cross wind. And sometimes
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: I feel like you can kind of catch them from
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: the side. And you you know, Sean and I last
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: year and November nineteenth, I think we've snuck up on
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: three bedded bucks and we're like fifty yards from them.
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: We had a cross wind, and they had no idea
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: where they were. We were there, and they had every
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: advantage to see us except for the way that we
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: approached it with a cross wind. Um. And then the
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: other thing with the wind that I've found is like
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: when you're set up, you don't get as much of
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: that crazy swirling and crazy thermal play that you get
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: when you're up in the tree stand. Like your wind.
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: A lot of times it's just like going into you know,
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: kind of getting stuffed by feeders or willows or taller
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: ass whatever. Maybe it's not traveling. It doesn't seem to
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: travel quite as far as it does when you're elevated,
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: Like it seems like you're you're you're sent your down
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: wind area is way bigger, you know, the spook zone.
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: I guess it's like way bigger when you're a stand
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: and when you're on the ground consistently and spotted left
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: I'm ground setups and I would say pretty consistently have
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: been winded less than tree stands there. Yeah, then tree
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: stands setups. Um. It's it sounds weird, but like do
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: a lot of you know, we carry milkweed with us
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: all the time, and like a lot of times you
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: drop that milk weed and it just like gets stuffed
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: by something, and it doesn't seem like it's traveling quite
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: as far as when you get up in the stand,
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: you got all that open ground down below you for
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: that wind to get down catch weird different thermals, different. Yeah,
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: it's like it's been a really eye opening um just
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: seeing how that wind goes away from the ground set up.
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: It's it's it's pretty crazy and I'm really really pleased
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: with that. And you know, I'm the stinkiest guy ever
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: out there, Like I don't kindn't use any um, Like
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: I don't have enough time with all the editing and
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: stuff we do, we don't have any time to do
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: um you know, any type of china control our set
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: and trying to smell anything less than you know, just
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: a stinky human. So like I want to know that
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: that wind isn't just doing crazy stuff. And I found,
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: you know, on the ground it just seems to be
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: just a little bit more consistent and just doesn't seem
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: to travel as far. And then I guess as far
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: as the shot goes, UM, I love the shot opportunities
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: because it's like you're shooting at a target. You know,
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: when you get up in the tree stand and elevated,
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: you're starting to talk about some weird angles sometimes, especially
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: if you're getting way up in the tree stand. Um.
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: I've actually been talking a lot about this year. You know,
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: we actually got some saddles tree saddles as well, and
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: we're excited about China those you know, we've been talking. Yeah,
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: I think the opportunity is unbelievable just being mobile. But
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: you know, the shot and I can I'll touch on
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: drawing in a minute, but you know, the shot angles
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: have been a huge game changer for me because the
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: shots that I messed up when I was younger, I
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: used a lot of climber stand climbing stands and I
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: was younger, you know, that was my mobile set up
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: because you know, Ohio, the trees aren't quite as bushy
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: as they are out here in Iowa. Like Ohio trees
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: are really straight, like telephone poles, Like you don't have
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: a lot of that horizontal branch and kind of that
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: brushy type tree that you get in and you know
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: other parts in the Midwest. So I was a lot
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: of times just trying to get super super far up
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: in trees and the climber and not in turn would
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: like get these really horrible angles to where a lot
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: of the shots that I messed up I really in
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: hindsight now, I think if I would have just been lower,
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: I would have had more vitals to work with. You know,
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: the higher you get, the weirder that angle gets. And
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: I've I've made a lot of shots on deer that
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: you know, I made a lot of shots on deer
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: that I have recovered all these but you know, like
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: one long liver and that's a lot of that has
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: to do with like a high tree stand angle. You know,
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: when you're on the ground, you're shooting at that deer
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: like eye level, flat like you've got all that to
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: work with. You don't have any weird angles from being
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: too too far up. And that's my like, my really
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: my favorite part about the ground coming the shot angles,
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: you know. And one when one's at twenty yards, he
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: never looks like he's further than twenty yards. He looks
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: like twenty yards, you know, like like you're shooting at
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: your three D target in the backyard. It's awesome, like
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: so instinctual. You know, you just draw back center that
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: pin and then you don't have to think about much
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: more than that. And then I guess as far as
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: drawing the actually just got ahold of a Matthew's try acts.
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: And I love that thing because it's super short. It's
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: like eight inches. Do you have fun mark? That thing
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: feels so tiny. Yeah, And I love that because like
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: that makes it so easy to draw on the ground.
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: I do a lot of like basically put that low,
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: that bottom limb parallel to the ground as close as
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: I can, and draw the bow facing down and then
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: then rise up. Like if you watch them. The buck
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: I killed in Iowa last year and that I know
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: that one was a little bit different, actually stood all
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: the way up because I knew that when he was
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: going behind a bush, I could just stand up and draw.
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: But the biggest thing is is just keeping your profile
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: low if they're if they're you know, if they're going
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: to be able to see you, keep that profile low,
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: and then I just ease up to them and I've drawn.
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: I practiced draw on a ton of deer to make
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: sure that, like, and I highly recommend that either you're
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: in a tree stand or you're in a um on
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: the ground, tree saddle, whatever. Like the more experience you
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: get practiced drawing, the better you know you get it
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: just making that decision, and it just comes more natural
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: when you know it's a moment of truth. But um,
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: the again, the biggest thing is keeping a low profile
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: and just you know, using using the vegetation and the
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: terrainteer advantage. Like if he can't if you can't see
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: his eyes, if you've got a chance to draw, do
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: it then and be ready. Um. And I've actually found
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: that it's pretty easy to pull off, especially in grassy habitat.
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: Maybe he got enough graphs that, like I sit on
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: my knees mostly, and like if I'm sitting on my
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: knees and I can draw that bow below that line
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: of vegetation, a lot of times, it's pretty you know,
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: pretty easy to do without them seeing you. Yeah, it's
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: all about that timing. It seems like mm hmm yeah,
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: same as a bear in a tree stand. Ye. Um,
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: Well that's interesting, Dan. I know you've got to drop
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: off here kind of soon. So do you have any
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: final thing you want to make sure we cover? Was
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: that before you have to bail? I'm just I'm kind
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: of curious, uh, when it comes to like making like
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: making the decision right. I mean, there had to be
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: a whole bunch of failures uh in in what you
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: do that led you to the method that you're you know,
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: hunting right now. So maybe like talk about a couple
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: of big failures that we're maybe aha moments that's like, hey, gosh,
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: darn it, man, I should have done this. Mhm um. Well,
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: I guess as far as the like the cadence and
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: moving or like the setups, um, like once you've got
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: to a spot, you know that a lot of that's
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: just like major hard you know, like hard lost trial
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: and air right like, yeah, we didn't have enough cover
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: there or um. One one thing that really sticks out
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: to me, um, there was a hunt last year, I
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: believe it was October and there was this there was
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: this betting area that I had hunted. I actually jumped
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: a buck out of it the year prior, and just
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: by hunting back there year prior, you know, I kind
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: of put the pieces of the puzzle together and there
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: was this scrape line I knew of that was right
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: on the transition line of the betting area, and Jake
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: and I went in there to still hunt it that
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: morning and Ibby diners like we weren't going in there,
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: sitting there talking to the cameras so stupid, like about
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: all this sign that we were seeing and like how
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: you know, looking really good, and you know, we're basically
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: talking about, hey, we found the hot sign, right and
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: sure enough, we were sitting in a place where we
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: didn't have enough cover and we weren't set up. We
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: were to continue moving, but like this was a huge, huge,
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: like like learning, like this like point of learning, Like
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: we we messed this up so bad. I have a decoy,
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: had a little one of those heads up silhouette decoys,
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: and I have that, so that was a little bit
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: of cover. But like we were just pretty much sitting
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: out in the open. Now we both had gilly suits on,
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: so that definitely helps, but we didn't have any like
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: big trees or anything around us. We were just kind
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: of sitting out like a little bit of graphs beside us,
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: which helps us a little bit. But sure enough we're
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: sitting there and like this is all like captured on video.
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: I'm just like, wait, do you hear that? It's like
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: there's got to be a buck like scraping, Like it
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: just was like that classics, just like sucking. They're just
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: hoofing up the place. Sure enough, I look up and
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: just this tank is standing there looking towards us. It's
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: like I don't know, like he's too close, Like we're
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: in a bad spot. So I I did my best
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: to get that decoy in front of me, and I
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: did get it set up and kind of stubbed it
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: down on the ground, so sitting up in front of me,
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: and he saw it. He started to circle down wind
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: and he's in bow range. He's thirty yards. I didn't
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: have a really good clear shot, and I got drawn
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: on him and everything, but I just didn't have a
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: good shot. But like he'd eventually was just got weirded
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: out by the situation, blew and just kind of slowly
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: bounded and then and then walked away. And that moment
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: was like, Hey, if you're still hunting, never stop where
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: there's not covered, dude, Like that's so dumb, Like why
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: were we just sitting out in the middle of the open.
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: I really think that if we had just had a
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: big tree to hide most of our body behind, like
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: we'd have got a shot at that book. I think
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: he would have tried to circle down wind to that
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: decoy and got in very very close range of us,
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: and we'd have been able to shoot him. But you know,
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: just the fact that we had nothing else was a huge, huge,
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: like don't do that anymore. And like now and another
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: thing that I maybe should have touched on earlier. We're
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: talking about cadence. It's like always looking at the next
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: place of like, okay, we're here, now we've got cover.
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: The deer shows up. This is how I'm gonna draw all.
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: This is where you know, I've got a shot here,
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: I've got a shot here. But then if we're gonna
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: make ten more yards, like that's the next next place,
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: and then that's the shooting lane. You're almost picking the
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: next spot before you get to it. You know, you
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: kind of have a small goal in mind or like
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: or maybe you make it halfway, maybe I make it halfway,
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: and the deer starts coming towards us, Like how are
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: we going to make cover work? You know, it's just
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: it's gotta be a constant thing in your mind of
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: like how can I grab some cover real quick and
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: make us make it work? And I think that we
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: learned that hard that day, Like I mean, it's silly,
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: it's it's funny now, but like we were just like
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: how did we just make that mistake? Like that was
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: so dumb, Like we were literally were exactly where we
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: expected them to be, working that scrape line, and that's
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: exactly what he was doing. You know, everything that we
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: had planned was right except for we just didn't have
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: enough caught and it was just silly. Yeah, that was
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: that was a hard one. My first year elk hunting,
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: My my buddy I was with said this same thing.
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: Never stop in an opening, never stop or do a
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: calling sequence, or take any time to glass or anything
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: unless you're set up somewhere with cover, because exactly what
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: you said, things can happen so quick. They can all
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: of a sudden be an elk that shows up, and
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: if you aren't set up with cover, you're stuck hung
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: out to dry. And you just always need to plan
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: for that happening, be ready for it just in case
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: it does. Because the one time that it happens and
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: you're not ready, you know, you had the moment you
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: had and yeah, for sure, and I think that I
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: think what was the was disappointing was that Jake and
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: I both are like, you know, really really into turkey hunting,
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: and like one of my one of my biggest like
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: pet peeves is like calling without like previously looking for
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: a place that you can dive into like if I'm
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: not standing right decided, I'm you know, a step from it,
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: because if a bird gobbles and he's inside a fifty yards,
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: like he might be coming right now and you need
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: to grab that cover. And it's like that was just
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: just totally went over our head when we were deer
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: hunting that day, and I think that, you know, I
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: hope to never make that mistake again. Surely I will
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: at some point, but you know, we learned a lot
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: from it that day. And I guess one other thing
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: I wanted to quickly touch on, you know, to kind
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: of get to um, you know, I guess getting to
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: that point of you know, really looking hard for that
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: hot sign and not setting up until you signed it
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: is I just when I was talking about being in
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: a rut at one point and hunting and you know,
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: kind of doing the same old, same old. It was
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: like you'd go into these spots and it's like the
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: signs not there. You know, the scrape that might have
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: been there the year prior isn't hot, it isn't opened up. Um,
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: you know, the rubs aren't there, and I just feel
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: like I wasted so many sits in spots that like
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: are good spots but just aren't hot spots. And just
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: you know, looking back at old footage, looking back at
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: you know, from from high you know, I've started I
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: started filming, you know, just like my buddies, Like we're
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: in high school. So I have like tons of tons
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: of things I could go back and look at, and
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: it's like those days we were having the best hunts,
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: it's like we're always in the hot sign. The days
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: that we're having the bad hunts, we're always not in
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: the hot sign. And I think that that's really one
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: of the big steps that led me into this more
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: mobile style of hunting. And and obviously like listening to
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: guys like Dan and and learning more about this betting,
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: you know, betting how Buck's dead and and all that
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: has definitely played a role in that as well. But
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: you know, the big thing was just like feeling like
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: at one point there was just a bunch of time
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: wasted in not hotspots. Yeah. So, so something that I
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: think includes a lot of the ideas we talked about
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: so far is your Iowa kill last year. You you
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: briefly touched on a bit, but I feel like if
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: I remember that hunt, right, there was a little bit
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: of the there's the ground hunting. There was some hot
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: sign you guys noticed there was, um, you know, being
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: in this new area that I think there was like
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: a standing cornfield or cut cornfield or something like that
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: that you were playing off of. Can you walk us
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: through that and maybe use as an example to illustrate
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: some of the things we talked about. Yeah, so what
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: I guess there was one actually other really important factor,
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: and that was hunting pressure. That day. It was November,
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: and like it just seems like that day everybody was
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: out and ended up running into um, that guy that
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: I've actually met on public Land in Ohio, super crazy,
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: and then I ran into him that day, met him,
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: met him in twice in the middle of nowhere. He's
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: from Vermont, and just happened to run into him twice,
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: which was pretty cool, and um ran into him, ran
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: and actually ended up running into his dad later that morning,
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: and like just ran into a number of different hunters
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: throughout that whole that whole day, and we were just
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: again not like locking onto a spot, we were just like, okay,
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: you know, it doesn't feel all right, it's bail And
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: we went in that day, Um oh Man. We were
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: probably at like five different public land locations throughout that day.
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: We never went home, but you know, we just kept
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: bouncing around, kind of poking into spots, and if it
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: didn't feel good, we just laughed. And eventually we got
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: to thinking about we'd hunted on the other side of
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: the river on that same piece that we ended up
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: going into that night and shooting the buck at. It
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: was like I told told Jake, I was like, you know,
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: not standing cornfield really interested me because if that standing
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: corn I would imagine not a lot of people are
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: walking way back in there, going through the corn and
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: then getting into that betting area. And I had scouted
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: that betting area. It's my buddy from Ohio. My parents
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: were there, and um, we just scouted at that spring prior,
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: and you know, it seems like a really good place
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: to be during the ruts. So we started easing in there,
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: and right away you could tell you could tell that
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: there was hunting pressure kind of around the edges, like
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: there were stands up around that standing cornfield, and and uh,
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: you can see where somebody had been walking in there
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: quite a bit. But as we got deeper in there,
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: all of a sudden, the scrapes started popping up. And
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: then as we started to get into the edge of it,
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: oh and then and then we got back even for
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: in one of those corn fields have just been recently
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: cut and there were buck tracks in that in the mud.
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: It was real kind of a damp day and damp
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: evening the night before. There was all kinds of really
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: fresh big buck tracks out in that um outing that
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: cut cornfield. And we were easing our way back and
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: got to the edge of the bedding area, started seeing
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: you know, rubs popping up, straights trails everywhere, and we
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: eventually got into the middle of the betting area and
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: we did bump a deer on the way and we
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: blew a bunch like, you know, totally spooked one. I was,
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: I was assuming it was a dull. I mean, I
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: don't know if that's the right of coumption or not,
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: but you know, we were just like like, okay, if
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: we bumped into a deer, we've seen all the sign
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: you know, we've we're being really quiet like nothing else. No,
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: the only reason that dear spooked is because they got
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: our wind. Like everything you know up wind of us
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: should have no idea where here, sign looks good, everything
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: looks good. Let's let's set up here and if we
- 1:51:08Speaker 1: need to go further tomorrow. You know, we only had
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: we only had like an hour and a half left
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: at that point in the day. We've been all over
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: the place, and like we were kind of running a time.
- 1:51:17Speaker 1: So we decided, all right, we're gonna set up here
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: and if it's no good tonight, we'll go deeper. And
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: the whole I guess the whole strategy was there was
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: kind of this little mini funnel within that betting area
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: where all the deer were coming out of their beds
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: and they were walking down this like very small strip
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: of canary grass. Everything else was like thick cat tails
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: or willows, and like right in the middle there was
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: kind of a hot little high rise and there was
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: just canary grasstaurant on that and all those deer were
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: coming out right on that that kind of little transition line.
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: And our theory was, you know, if a buck is
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: following some bills up and out of there, you might
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: get lucky and he's gonna come right through here. But
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: another thing that we think about a lot, and we've
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: been talking about a lot of the last year. So
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: it's like bucks crossing dough trails, you know, that's like
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: kind of just a more effective way for them to
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: kind of check for the hot dough. It's like they're
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: just cutting, They're going perpendicular to the bulk of the trails,
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: Like a lot of trails are just you know, a
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: to b bed to food and find a lot of
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: scrapes and rubs that are going straight perpendicular to that.
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: And it just we just started thinking, you know, it's like, okay,
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: if if that's the case, like there's obviously obviously a reason,
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: And we started setting up on that a lot more
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: last year, and it's all lots of buck doing that,
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: just going exactly perpendicular to the ball of the beer movement.
- 1:52:46Speaker 1: They're just cutting those dose trails looking for the hot dough.
- 1:52:48Speaker 1: It's more efficient than them going and checking every betting
- 1:52:52Speaker 1: area instead they're just going and looking on all those
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: trails just on one mine. And I guess the theory was, like,
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: like I said, eas either us either going to follow
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: the dose out on this little patch canary graph on
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: the transition, or he's gonna come across here and come
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: across in front of us. Cutting east trails. Our wind
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: was going it would have been perpendicular to those trails.
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: So we were set up twenty yards from those trailers,
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: you know, anywhere from like seven yards to yards from
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: those trails, and they were going in front of us
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: east and west, and the wind was coming out of
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: the south and the wind is blowing. The wind was
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: blowing towards mostly cat tails, where we expected the least
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: amount of deer to come from. Let's put it that way, Um,
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: kind of just going into a massive cattails. And like
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: I said, like we blew a deer like right before
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: we set up, because it was bedded out in those
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: cat tails. But it was just one. And we knew
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: if we were, you know, to do it for there
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: was one, there would probably be some more. So we
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: just didn't worry too much about it and just up
- 1:54:06Speaker 1: and really nothing happened for the longest time. And I
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: was getting impatient, you know, classic and I'm standing up
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: on the We were kind of tucked up under a
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: willow so unbelievable setup. It was. It was really really nice.
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: It had ton to cover there, but there was this
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: like big willow trunk that kind of like ran along
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: the ground and then went up so I could stand
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: up on that trunk and I could get like three
- 1:54:34Speaker 1: more feet up in the air and see further into
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: that betting area. So Jake is like Jake is with me.
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: He was filming, and he was just like laying on
- 1:54:44Speaker 1: the ground looking at his phone or something, and I'm
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: standing up on this log glass and then that betting area.
- 1:54:49Speaker 1: Remember saying something along the lines of just like, how
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: are we not saying any deer because like we were
- 1:54:54Speaker 1: in the middle of just like you know, the hot side, Like,
- 1:54:57Speaker 1: how are there no deer in here? In like thirty
- 1:55:00Speaker 1: seconds later, I hear crack this big branch snap, and
- 1:55:05Speaker 1: I looked to my right and I just see handlers
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: sticking up in the grass, and uh, it's just super
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: dumb of me, and I just moved too fast. I
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: panicked because I was like, he's right on top of us.
- 1:55:18Speaker 1: I mean, he's forty five yards coming right out of
- 1:55:21Speaker 1: I panicked, and I moved and he looked. He looked
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: up and he saw he saw a movement. But I
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: was again, I'm wearing that gilly suit, and I just
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: slowly slops down. I can see that he's looking at me,
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: but I just slowly slapped down, grabbed my bow, and
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: I'm like, Jake, there's a buck coming right out of like,
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: you know, get ready, but shure enough. He pops right
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: out of that stuff. And at this point, he's thirty yards.
- 1:55:45Speaker 1: He pops right out and he looks right at us
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: for one, one or two seconds, and he just doesn't
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: see anything, and he just keeps on going. And he
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: came about five more yards closer, and he cut cut
- 1:55:58Speaker 1: those trails and then got to the end of where
- 1:56:00Speaker 1: he wanted to go and he started to circle right
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: back into that betting area. Now he's not going out
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: towards those fields at all. He's going deeper back into
- 1:56:07Speaker 1: that betting area. You know he was That's exactly what
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: he was doing, is he was cutting those trails and
- 1:56:12Speaker 1: then he was gonna loop right back in there. He
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: wasn't gonna go out towards the agg he wasn't gonna
- 1:56:15Speaker 1: go out towards that open ground. You know, it's getting
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: close to dark, but he's going right back into that
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: betting area. And I had some you know, some shooting
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: lanes picked out, and you know, when I was envisioning
- 1:56:27Speaker 1: the spot working, I was like, man, how awesome would
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: it be if one just walked and put his head
- 1:56:31Speaker 1: right behind that big bush. And he's like, because it's
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: like I think I could draw and just stand up.
- 1:56:36Speaker 1: Sure enough, that's exactly what he did. He went right
- 1:56:38Speaker 1: behind a big, big pile of brush out there. I
- 1:56:43Speaker 1: just drew and stood up and as soon as he
- 1:56:45Speaker 1: stepped out, I stopped him and shot him at tony
- 1:56:47Speaker 1: five yards. And you know, a lot of a lot
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: of that is, you know, I think how he ended
- 1:56:54Speaker 1: up getting to that spot is you know, kind of
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: like you said, all those things that we've touched on.
- 1:56:57Speaker 1: It's like avoiding the pressure, you know, look in for
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: the hot sign and um, just being mobile, you know
- 1:57:05Speaker 1: if it's yeah, we could have very well set up
- 1:57:07Speaker 1: on a number of other places that day, but it's
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: like we just try not to get too caught up
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: in a spot that, you know, maybe it's been good
- 1:57:13Speaker 1: in the past, Like if the signs not they're not
- 1:57:16Speaker 1: not worth sitting it. But we knew when we got
- 1:57:18Speaker 1: into that spot that we were we were gonna hunt
- 1:57:20Speaker 1: it that night. We were gonna hunt it the next day.
- 1:57:22Speaker 1: Like if we didn't kill one that night, I'd guarantee
- 1:57:24Speaker 1: we would have been back in there the next day
- 1:57:26Speaker 1: because the sign was just on fire. Yeah, that's awesome that,
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: I mean, it is is cool to see all those
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: things kind of line up to make that hunt. And
- 1:57:37Speaker 1: you know, so many times you can do nine percent
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: of the things right and then something still goes wrong.
- 1:57:43Speaker 1: But it's nice when all the lessons learned, all these
- 1:57:46Speaker 1: things you've been thinking about every once in a while,
- 1:57:48Speaker 1: once or twice a year, maybe they line up in
- 1:57:50Speaker 1: the everything falls in place and it works out. So yeah,
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: that's yeah, it's it's total trial and arra too. I mean,
- 1:57:57Speaker 1: it's just like any type of hunting. I mean, you're
- 1:57:59Speaker 1: gonna all for sure, but I think that Yeah, like
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: you said, it's fun when it finally works out, because
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: both times it doesn't. My favorite saying and hunting end
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: in life is you win some, but you lose most.
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: You can't you can't let the losses get you down.
- 1:58:15Speaker 1: You just gotta keep going after it. Man. That is
- 1:58:17Speaker 1: the truth. So, um, well, I feel like there's nineteen
- 1:58:22Speaker 1: other things I still want to talk about, but we're
- 1:58:24Speaker 1: pushing close to two hours here, so we better wrap it.
- 1:58:26Speaker 1: But what's the what's the plan for the rest of
- 1:58:29Speaker 1: the year where else. So you guys headed, Um tomorrow morning,
- 1:58:33Speaker 1: we're going to Minnesota and we're gonna be hunting with
- 1:58:36Speaker 1: um damn in fault. Um nice, I'll do it yourself sportsman.
- 1:58:45Speaker 1: His name. His name is Garrett. Don't know if you're
- 1:58:46Speaker 1: familiar with Garrett work. He's on YouTube. Um. And then
- 1:58:51Speaker 1: a couple of other members from the Hunting Beast will
- 1:58:53Speaker 1: be there and we're hunt some Minnesota public land, have
- 1:58:57Speaker 1: some fun and we're calling it the public Land Challenge.
- 1:59:00Speaker 1: But you know, there's actually no real challenge. You just wanna,
- 1:59:04Speaker 1: you know, kind of document how we're all approaching things
- 1:59:07Speaker 1: a little bit differently. You know, we all have fairly
- 1:59:09Speaker 1: similar aggressive hunting type styles. But you know it's just
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: gonna be a fun way to not really even I
- 1:59:18Speaker 1: guess compare showing anything that's better, just showing how it's
- 1:59:22Speaker 1: all different. And we're excited about that. And then um,
- 1:59:27Speaker 1: we'll do Missouri for sure, Iowa for sure. Um, I
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: really really really am hoping that it's all gonna line
- 1:59:37Speaker 1: up and I'm gonna be able to get to Ohio.
- 1:59:39Speaker 1: I kind of want to go to the kind of
- 1:59:41Speaker 1: my plan right now is the hit Ohio one through ten, UM,
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: and then November one through ten, and then oh what else.
- 1:59:49Speaker 1: Alabama is looking like a thing that we're definitely gonna
- 1:59:53Speaker 1: try and then and then that would be later in
- 1:59:56Speaker 1: the season, and then Greg might go back to Nebraska.
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: You know, he really wants to go back to Nebraska,
- 2:00:02Speaker 1: which would be really cool. Kind of try try to
- 2:00:04Speaker 1: hit it at a different time frame than we have
- 2:00:06Speaker 1: the last couple of years. UM, probably a little bit
- 2:00:09Speaker 1: of Wisconsin here and there, and then yeah, I mean
- 2:00:13Speaker 1: we get lucky and put some more put some tags
- 2:00:15Speaker 1: on some bucks, you know, maybe maybe even a couple more. Well,
- 2:00:20Speaker 1: I know, some good stuff in Michigan I can point
- 2:00:21Speaker 1: you towards if you ever had this direction. Uh, it's
- 2:00:25Speaker 1: it's I would love the hunt in Michigan. Man, It's
- 2:00:29Speaker 1: definitely on the It's definitely on the high priority list.
- 2:00:32Speaker 1: That and that and just anywhere in the East. I
- 2:00:36Speaker 1: guess is I'm really drawn to just being from there.
- 2:00:39Speaker 1: I've always wanted to travel, you know, in the state's
- 2:00:43Speaker 1: bordering Ohio, so places like Indiana, u Kentucky, Pennsylvania, New York,
- 2:00:50Speaker 1: New York is really high on the priority list. Michigan,
- 2:00:53Speaker 1: all those places I'm sadly you can't do them all
- 2:00:57Speaker 1: in one year though. That's the that's the tough part.
- 2:00:59Speaker 1: You can't do it all. But it sounds like you
- 2:01:00Speaker 1: guys are gonna give it one hell to try, so
- 2:01:06Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to following along. So, Zack, I appreciate
- 2:01:09Speaker 1: you taking the time to do this just before taking
- 2:01:11Speaker 1: off for a big trip and all that. And uh,
- 2:01:13Speaker 1: can't we see how it goes? Yeah, no problem, I'm
- 2:01:17Speaker 1: really happy to happy to talk hunting. I appreciate you
- 2:01:20Speaker 1: having me on it. I can probably talk for another
- 2:01:23Speaker 1: couple of days here at least, but we'll have to
- 2:01:26Speaker 1: do it a follow up sometime, maybe later in the
- 2:01:29Speaker 1: season or early next year. See how it all went. Yeah,
- 2:01:32Speaker 1: sounds good. Appreciate it all right, Good luck to season, Zack,
- 2:01:35Speaker 1: and we will talk to you later. And that's gonna
- 2:01:37Speaker 1: do it first Today's so. I hope you enjoyed this
- 2:01:39Speaker 1: one as much as I did. I thought Zack had
- 2:01:41Speaker 1: some really interesting things to share. Um, just a lot
- 2:01:45Speaker 1: of ideas that get me thinking. So who knows, maybe
- 2:01:49Speaker 1: I'll be run around on the ground this year a
- 2:01:50Speaker 1: little bit, trying some things out. I know it's it's
- 2:01:53Speaker 1: a very intriguing proposition and a lot of his public
- 2:01:56Speaker 1: land ideas I know I've already been putting into action
- 2:01:59Speaker 1: in different Four is based off some of the other
- 2:02:01Speaker 1: people he's learned from. Um I've learned from two, and
- 2:02:03Speaker 1: I certainly think there's a lot of potential there as well.
- 2:02:05Speaker 1: So good stuff here. I guess before we wrap this
- 2:02:09Speaker 1: thing up, if you haven't yet subscribed to the YouTube
- 2:02:11Speaker 1: channel or the podcast, we would love it if you
- 2:02:13Speaker 1: could do that. If you want to leave a rating
- 2:02:15Speaker 1: or review on iTunes, that would be much appreciated as well.
- 2:02:18Speaker 1: And I guess otherwise, I just want to wish you
- 2:02:21Speaker 1: a ton of luck if you're out there hunting. I
- 2:02:22Speaker 1: know hunting seasons they're open for a whole lot of
- 2:02:24Speaker 1: people now, So good luck out there, shoot straight, and
- 2:02:27Speaker 1: until next time, stay wired to Hunt.
