- 0:11Hello friends. It is Sean.
- 0:14Here it is Tuesday, it is the 15th of August and it's great to
- 0:18have your company. I hope you're going well.
- 0:21I hope your toes are warm and winter is treating you well, or
- 0:27summer if you're on the other side of the world, but it is a
- 0:30chilly, chilly time down here in Tassie.
- 0:34I'm rubbing my toes together to get some warmth back into them,
- 0:37but that's just me and my extremities not liking the cold.
- 0:43But today, cold or warm, we continue reading through the
- 0:47book of Isaiah together, and today is a fascinating chapter.
- 0:51This is a chapter that Isaiah writes or prophesized during the
- 0:55time when the Assyrians are closing in and laying siege to
- 1:00the city of Jerusalem. And well, God's people are
- 1:03pretty proud of themselves. They have made some excellent
- 1:06preparations and instead of coming to God to save them, they
- 1:10are feeling pretty happy with all the work that they've done
- 1:13preparing for the siege. And Isaiah says, don't you know
- 1:17you are rejoicing, being so proud of yourselves?
- 1:20But disaster is just around the corner.
- 1:22So a good reminder for us that when we think that we are way
- 1:26too clever for our own good, come back to depending on God.
- 1:31So let us read together this chapter, Isaiah, chapter 22.
- 1:47This message came to me concerning Jerusalem, the valley
- 1:51of vision. What is happening?
- 1:55Why is everyone running to the rooftops?
- 1:58The whole city is in a terrible uproar.
- 2:02What do I see in this reveling city?
- 2:06Bodies are lying everywhere, killed not in battle but by
- 2:10famine and disease. All your leaders have fled.
- 2:15They surrendered without resistance.
- 2:17The people tried to slip away, but they were captured too.
- 2:22That's why I said leave me alone to weep.
- 2:25Do not try to comfort me. Let me cry for my people as I
- 2:30watch them being destroyed. Oh, what a day of crushing
- 2:35defeat. What a day of confusion and
- 2:39terror brought by the Lord and the Lord of Heaven's armies.
- 2:43Upon the valley of vision. The walls of Jerusalem have been
- 2:47broken, and cries of death echo from the mountain sides.
- 2:52Elimites are The Archers with their Chariots and charioteers.
- 2:58The men of Kerr hold up the Shields.
- 3:01Chariots filled your beautiful valleys and charioteers storm
- 3:05your gates. Judah's defenses have been
- 3:09stripped away. You run to the Armory for your
- 3:12weapons. You inspect the breaks in the
- 3:15walls of Jerusalem. You store up water in the lower
- 3:18pool. You survey the houses and tear
- 3:21some down for stone to strengthen the walls.
- 3:25Between the city walls you build a reservoir for water from the
- 3:28old pool. But you never ask for help from
- 3:32the one who did all this. You never considered the one who
- 3:36planned this long ago. At that time the Lord, the Lord
- 3:42of Heaven's armies, called you to weep and mourn.
- 3:46He told you to shave your heads in sorrow for your sins, and to
- 3:50wear clothes of burlap to show your remorse.
- 3:54But instead you dance and play. You slaughter cattle and kill
- 3:59sheep. You feast on meat and drink
- 4:02wine. You say, let's feast and drink,
- 4:06for tomorrow we die. The Lord of Heaven's armies has
- 4:11revealed this to me. Till the day you die, you will
- 4:16never be forgiven for this sin that is the judgment of the
- 4:20Lord, the Lord of Heaven's armies.
- 4:24This is what the Lord, the Lord of Heaven's army, said to me.
- 4:28Confront Shebner, the palace administrator, and give him this
- 4:32message. Who do you think you are, and
- 4:35what are you doing here? Building a beautiful tomb for
- 4:39yourself, a monument high up in the rock.
- 4:43For the Lord is about to hurl you away.
- 4:45Mighty man, He is going to grab you, crumple you into a ball,
- 4:51and tossed you away into a distant, barren land.
- 4:55There you will die, and your glorious Chariots will be broken
- 5:00and useless. You are a disgrace to your
- 5:04master. Yes, I will drive you out of
- 5:08office, says the Lord. I will pull you down from your
- 5:11high position, and then I will call my servant to Liar Kim, son
- 5:17of Hilkia, to replace you. I will dress him in your royal
- 5:21robes and will give him your title and your authority.
- 5:25And he will be a father to the people of Jerusalem and Judah.
- 5:30I will give him the key to the House of David, the highest
- 5:34position in the Royal Court. When he opens doors, no one will
- 5:38be able to close them. When he closes doors, no one
- 5:42will be able to open them. He will bring honor to his
- 5:45family name, for I will drive him firmly in place like a nail
- 5:50in the wall. That will give him great
- 5:53responsibility, and he will bring honor to even the lowliest
- 5:57members of his family. But the Lord of Heaven's Armies
- 6:01also says the time will come when I will pull out the nail
- 6:06that seemed so firm. It will come out and fall to the
- 6:10ground. Everything it supports will fall
- 6:13with it. I, the Lord, have spoken.
- 6:27You are a wonderful, glorious and all-encompassing God.
- 6:34Your plans stretch out in every direction and are so steadfast
- 6:40and sure Help us not to rely on our own plans, but to rest in
- 6:48you and your plans for us. Thank you that our lives are not
- 6:54just decided on a whim and the changing directions of the wind,
- 6:59but that you love us and you have crafted this life for us.
- 7:05There will be times of great joy and celebration in you, and yes,
- 7:10there will be times of painful pruning, but we rest in you and
- 7:17your sovereignty over us. Thank you for the blessings you
- 7:24will give us and help us. Always attribute them to you and
- 7:26not our own cleverness, because as clever as you may have made
- 7:30us, the blessings are yours and you give them to us.
- 7:37And for the greatest blessing of all, we thank you for Jesus, for
- 7:42everything that I revealed about your love for us and your
- 7:45goodness. We love you and we worship you
- 7:49in His name. Amen.
