Transcript
- 0:00All right, good afternoon. Welcome, Miller and Condon on a
- 0:03Tuesday, The Iowa Sports Radio Network back at it for the next
- 0:066 hours, two of which will be manned by Trent Condon and
- 0:10myself, Kevin Miller. We will take you until 2 off the
- 0:12bench, coming up two until 5:00 and then overtime.
- 0:15Iowa. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:18program today. We're going to check in with our
- 0:20friend from the Twin Cities, Dame Moussutani covers the
- 0:23Vikings. Vikings are the playoffs, but I
- 0:25think their story is still valid here locally.
- 0:27A lot of interest, obviously in the quarterback in the steps
- 0:30that he seemingly is taken. They'll be on the road against
- 0:33the Giants and then they finish in the division, right?
- 0:36They've got the Lions, and then are they the Bears final
- 0:40opponent of the Packers? No, the Lions and Bears play the
- 0:43final week of the year. So we will be the Packers.
- 0:47Oh, it's the Christmas afternoon game against the Lions.
- 0:50Lions in the middle of the afternoon, 330 for that one.
- 0:52OK, well, we're going to talk about the Vikings.
- 0:54We'll talk today. And he was in Dallas on Sunday
- 0:57night. We'll get his take.
- 0:58And this Scott Reister, our sports director over at KCCI
- 1:02Channel 8, he's got a an event happening tonight.
- 1:05Toys for Tots always had a soft spot for Toys for Tots.
- 1:09And he along with former NFL player Fred Jackson will be in
- 1:12Ankeny tonight at the Oral Labor Fairway location from 6:00 until
- 1:177:00. If Toys for Tots is on your list
- 1:19of holiday givings, holiday holiday charitable givings, why
- 1:24not make it tonight? Head over there, see Scott
- 1:27Reister, Fred Jackson, what a nice long NFL career.
- 1:31And of course, Santa's going to be there as well.
- 1:33So we'll get the Scott Reister in here to help him promote that
- 1:36at about 10 minutes before 1:00. Then Elliot Clough, he's up
- 1:40next. We'll talk Hawks with Elliot at
- 1:421:00. And then Bill Bender on college
- 1:44football 130. Trump will make some play circus
- 1:47sports sponsor those and we will make way for off the bench with
- 1:50Lucas and Sean. So another week of the NFL has
- 1:53come and we've gone. We've closed the books on Week
- 1:5615 with a a cold Monday night or last night as the Dolphins fall
- 2:01to Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh now back on top in
- 2:04the AFC North. You know, when you look at these
- 2:07divisions, as I was last night or during the game, because the
- 2:09game was brutal, really was Tagliovo, they got a problem.
- 2:14There he is. They had Justin Herbert.
- 2:17We can say there's a lot of times.
- 2:19Right, but you do that too much. Sure, but they could have, and
- 2:21they decided to go with him and they have to be well, not
- 2:26pleased with their decision. He's awful.
- 2:28He is not good. Aaron Rodgers, I don't want to
- 2:31say he's turning back time, but looked pretty darn good last
- 2:34night. It was adequate last night.
- 2:36Not putting up the numbers. Obviously in his prime if you do
- 2:38at his age. But the Steelers, look, I give
- 2:41them absolutely no chance if they get in.
- 2:44I just don't see it right now. They would play, they would be
- 2:48the four seed. So they'd be looking at a five
- 2:50seed and Los Angeles Chargers come on down.
- 2:53So we'll we'll see. There's a lot of a lot of work
- 2:55left to be done in the AFC West, but last night's game was a
- 3:00stinker. But but back to my original
- 3:01point, I was looking at the divisions and trying to figure
- 3:04out the playoffs, etcetera. There's I think you can make a
- 3:07case that seven of these 8 divisions are still up for grabs
- 3:11and the one I'm not putting up is the NFC East, 'cause I think
- 3:16the Eagle, I don't see the Eagles winning out.
- 3:18I don't see the Cowboys winning out.
- 3:21Eagles have to lose every game. That's not going to happen.
- 3:23Cowboys have to win every game. I doubt that that's going to.
- 3:26Happen. You don't see the Commanders
- 3:27getting the Eagles twice. How far back are they?
- 3:31It would take that. It does take the Eagles losing
- 3:33out in the Cowboys. Winning and Daniels is done.
- 3:35Yes, he's OK. Yeah, he's OK.
- 3:39No, I don't. I don't see that happening.
- 3:41But the other divisions, they're wide open.
- 3:45Aren't they now? Wide open.
- 3:47But the Bills are only a game back.
- 3:49Baltimore and Pittsburgh still have to play each other again.
- 3:52That's a game separating those two.
- 3:54Houston, don't look now. They've one game behind
- 3:57Jacksonville. Denver's a couple of games up on
- 3:59the Chargers. They still have yet to play.
- 4:01Denver's doesn't have an easy schedule, though.
- 4:03We've got a little softer with Bohm's injury news.
- 4:06They've got the Jags this weekend and then on the road, on
- 4:12the road to Kansas City before playing the Chargers in Week 18.
- 4:16Philadelphia, I think that one's over.
- 4:17Your Bears are in front, but they have a huge game Saturday
- 4:20night. Tampa and Carolina are are are
- 4:22actually tied and they'll play two of the three final weeks.
- 4:25How about that for the schedule and then the Rams.
- 4:28This is a three team race out West I think.
- 4:30Oh, absolutely. I I don't see how you can.
- 4:33We know one of the two teams is going to take a loss in two
- 4:35days. Yeah.
- 4:36So all right, put that in there. Now, of course, you go the other
- 4:38way. One of the two teams is going to
- 4:40get a win, but the 49ers schedule the rest of the way
- 4:43sets up in a way where I think absolutely, as I said, a game
- 4:47back in the division. Can they go 3 and O?
- 4:49Well, it starts at Indianapolis against.
- 4:53Philip Rivers, right? Yeah.
- 4:55And that's one. Is that Monday night?
- 4:57That is Monday. Night.
- 4:58Monday night, yeah, I'll give them I.
- 4:59This seems like a win to me. Then the following Sunday night,
- 5:02they welcome in the Bears. That's.
- 5:03A back-to-back prime timer for the Niners.
- 5:05I love it. Sunday night against the Bears
- 5:08at home, Niners or what? Point and a half, 2 1/2 point
- 5:12favorite, something like that. And then you wrap up at home
- 5:16against Seattle. Oh boy, what a game.
- 5:18That might be where NBC is. Yes, absolutely.
- 5:21There's so many maturations of this schedule at this point.
- 5:24There are so many directions. It does this feel, it feels like
- 5:27at this point, normally we haven't narrowed down to a
- 5:29couple of games you'd point to, if you like, it's going to be
- 5:32one of these, maybe 3. Right.
- 5:34One of these eight, I mean, what do you look at the Week 18
- 5:37schedule? Let me get it in front of me
- 5:38here. What could be on the line?
- 5:40We talked about the bears and lions.
- 5:41And what we're talking about is NBCS going to flex a game to
- 5:44Sunday night. The Sunday Nighter game.
- 5:46What is the what's the number? It's the final game of the year
- 5:49and it's game. Game 256 does that.
- 5:51And I think it might be higher now because we got 17 games.
- 5:54But yeah, yeah. But that final game of the
- 5:56season, Lions, Bears, absolutely could be, could be a winning in,
- 6:01losing out. Those are the games that they
- 6:02love. Packers.
- 6:04Vikings. Probably not.
- 6:05No. Dolphins.
- 6:06Patriots. No.
- 6:07No. Titans, Jags.
- 6:09No. No.
- 6:10Panthers. Bucks, Absolutely.
- 6:13But you know what? That's the least attractive.
- 6:15It is national recognition. But you're right.
- 6:18I mean, if they're forced to take it, Yep.
- 6:19Yep, that's true. Cardinals.
- 6:21Rams. Probably not.
- 6:21No. Colts.
- 6:23Texans. Possibly.
- 6:24Maybe. There's a maybe there Eagles,
- 6:26Commanders, No. Cowboys Giants, No.
- 6:29Browns Bengals, No. Saints.
- 6:31Falcons Highlight No. No.
- 6:34Raven Steelers? Yes, that went on the list,
- 6:36absolutely. Jets.
- 6:37Bills. Probably not, no.
- 6:39Because you want both teams. Chiefs, Raiders, cross it off
- 6:42Chargers, Broncos, absolutely. That's five.
- 6:44And then Seahawks, Niners. So that's a half dozen games
- 6:47that all could have major ramifications either division
- 6:52could be. In in.
- 6:53Seeding. Playoff positioning.
- 6:55By for the one. Seed and there's been I believe
- 6:58two different times where they haven't flexed because there
- 7:01have been there's a 2 or. One I remember 1/2, has it been
- 7:052? Because the last time it
- 7:06happened, we went back and we looked and there was another
- 7:09time that it had happened, yes. And that's the only reason I
- 7:12remember that because I had a faint memory of it happening.
- 7:16I don't know what the new TV contracts now, if it's an
- 7:18automatic now, if they regardless, we're going to get
- 7:21one of these. But regardless of that, it has
- 7:23happened. Not going to be the case this
- 7:25year. There's going to be something
- 7:26with some huge ramifications. The Kansas City Chiefs there's
- 7:31there's conflicting reports. Do you follow the the NFL former
- 7:35doctor on Twitter? I don't, but I see him.
- 7:38I see him. You're right, I see him a ton.
- 7:41I want to get it's it's Pro Football.
- 7:44Let me forget his actual pro Pro Football doc.
- 7:48And this is this guy's resume. Ex NFL head team doctor for 17
- 7:54plus years. So he's been, you know, on the
- 7:57sidelines. He believes that Mahomes tore
- 8:00both his ACL and his is it LCL lateral collateral ligament and
- 8:08the with with Mahomes having two ligaments that were torn.
- 8:13You know what, let me just send this to you.
- 8:15It's a minute and 30 seconds. I'm going to direct message this
- 8:18to you. Let me just send this right to
- 8:20the right to you so we can hear from the doctor himself and
- 8:24rather than me try and explain it.
- 8:26Because he believes that there's a chance that Mahomes isn't
- 8:32going to be back until maybe even the 2027 season because
- 8:37it's a 2 lateral 2 ligaments were torn.
- 8:42And the fact is he is under the impression it's his professional
- 8:47opinion that the reason Mahomes underwent surgery as quickly as
- 8:52he did because this just wasn't a stand alone ACL.
- 8:56You know, your run-of-the-mill ACL.
- 8:58He thinks that this one was actually 2 ligaments being torn.
- 9:04And for that reason, he's very concerned that Mahomes aid.
- 9:07He might be able to, you know, get back on the field.
- 9:10But if he does, as you're going to hear in the sound bite, it
- 9:15may be Patrick Mahomes pocket passer, and that's not his
- 9:19strength. Do you have a trend?
- 9:21I think I have the right one here.
- 9:23Twitter's giving me problems, but yes, I think I have it all
- 9:25right. Confirmation of our suspected
- 9:28LCL injury for Patrick Mahomes means the Chief season will be
- 9:33significantly impacted in 2026. There is no way for him to be
- 9:38100% healthy for the start of next season.
- 9:41This is doctor David Chow at sports injury central.
- 9:44The lateral collateral ligament and the ACL confirms it was a
- 9:48multi ligament knee injury and that's why repair was done early
- 9:54the day after the tear itself. The comp here is Carson Wentz in
- 10:002017 initially reported his ACL then later confirmed his LCL as
- 10:06well. He underwent surgery a couple
- 10:09days after his December injury when he was with the Eagles.
- 10:14I'm not suggesting it will derail Mahomes career, like it
- 10:18in some ways derailed Carson Wentz's career, but once even
- 10:22says it was an 18 to 24 month recovery.
- 10:26He did not start the season for the Eagles the following year.
- 10:30He played quickly but then developed other injuries.
- 10:34Patrick Mahomes is unbelievable. He played through a high ankle
- 10:37sprain in 2023 Super Bowl 57 and beat the Eagles.
- 10:43No one's doubting him, but the fact is when you tear the LCL
- 10:47and ACL, have the LCL repaired and the ACL reconstructed.
- 10:52This is a higher bar than simple ACL reconstruction.
- 10:56Can he play from the pocket? Sure, but it might be 2027
- 11:01before he's fully mobile. Patrick Mahomes like before.
- 11:05Wishing him the best of luck, but this news is significant for
- 11:10the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes. Go to
- 11:12sportsentrycentralsicscore.com for all the latest.
- 11:15All right, so this is a guy that's been in operating rooms
- 11:18and he's done these procedures before.
- 11:19I'm going to defer to his opinion.
- 11:21Not that he's, you know, been there.
- 11:22He wasn't in the room yesterday in Dallas when Mahomes underwent
- 11:25the surgery. But that's certainly far better
- 11:28than a couple of knuckleheads from noon to two trying to
- 11:31figure out our way through this thing.
- 11:32Here's this is this is big on a couple of fronts.
- 11:36Obviously the head coach, Andy Reid, does he want to come back
- 11:40and go through this again and cross his fingers that his may
- 11:44be the best quarterback to ever play the game?
- 11:46And that pains me to say because I'm an Elway guy, but the and
- 11:50and obviously Brady was pretty darn good in his own right.
- 11:52And there's been a bunch of them, right?
- 11:53Errors are different. I get it.
- 11:55But this guy's at the absolute pinnacle of his powers right now
- 11:58in Patrick Mahomes. And if he can't come back next
- 12:01year, what does he do? What does Travis Kelsey do?
- 12:04How is this team going to look the final three weeks of the
- 12:07regular season? I mean, this is uncharted
- 12:08territory for this roster, Trent.
- 12:10They've never been in a spot. I mean, how many of them are 11
- 12:13year vets, Kelsey and that it on this team.
- 12:18How are they going to handle these next three weeks?
- 12:20Probably not. Well, I wouldn't anticipate
- 12:23you're going to see a real inspired group at this point in
- 12:25time. But can we stop the narrative
- 12:28out there that the dynasty is dead?
- 12:29No, it's not. Over as soon as he gets back
- 12:31under center. I mean, thumbs the thing again.
- 12:33The the simpleton thinking about this, that this thing is over
- 12:35and that it's going to end. And do you see that guy?
- 12:38Do you have you watched Patrick Mahomes for the last eight
- 12:40years? Absolutely.
- 12:43I don't understand the thought process and the people that are
- 12:46just throwing out and I know it's the hot taker and it drives
- 12:49me nuts. And people just go out there to
- 12:50say those kind of things and say inflammatory things just to say
- 12:53them because it's not true. People.
- 12:55How many times during Brady's career did you hear that?
- 12:58It's not going to happen, right? It's not going to happen, right?
- 13:00It's not going to happen and it continually happened.
- 13:02You said it every August. And the belief is for me with
- 13:06that front office, with that guy quarterback, that this is going
- 13:10to be an organization that is always at minimum going to be
- 13:13there. Is this a blessing in disguise,
- 13:15Trent? They draft 29303132 every year,
- 13:19usually 31 or 32. No, because guys, you miss it
- 13:2232. You miss it 12.
- 13:24I, I yeah, but you got, you got more guys that you can miss on
- 13:27at 12 than you can at 32. No, because they've drafted
- 13:30incredibly well. They have to.
- 13:32That's my point. So IA blessing of disguise.
- 13:34No, they want to be there. They want to be in the playoffs.
- 13:37I absolutely can't go down that line.
- 13:39Well, no, of course they want to be in the playoffs, but it's
- 13:41not. They're going to have to reset
- 13:43the roster, whether it be next year or whether it be 2027.
- 13:47I mean, the offensive line, they need, they need some help.
- 13:50They absolutely need running backs in the worst way.
- 13:53But the kid from Notre Dame love I would we look in a freaking
- 13:56chiefs uniform. The the offense of the defensive
- 13:59lines not getting any younger. Harrison Butter, who was
- 14:03automatic for how many years he's not, you know, failed kind
- 14:09of dropping off a little bit here.
- 14:10So we'll see about this team, but this is certainly something
- 14:15to watch. I think the biggest thing to
- 14:17watch, obviously is what does Andy Reid do and how did this
- 14:20team react after Andy Reid is gone?
- 14:22Can't coach forever. 67 years old, got a bunch of grandkids.
- 14:26Does he really want to go through this again?
- 14:28Is, you know, his his next stop is is Canton in the Hall of
- 14:31Fame. We'll see where it goes.
- 14:32Let's take a couple of calls, Anthony and then Nate in that
- 14:35order. Anthony, thanks for being
- 14:36patient. How are you?
- 14:37I'm. Pretty good guys.
- 14:39Merry Christmas to you all, Merry.
- 14:41Christmas. Yeah, guys talk about my cheese
- 14:44and they're saying, yeah, it's a bummer this year, but pressure
- 14:51tooth is or does. How do you guys on that veteran
- 14:54or veterans right now? This has age has finally caught
- 14:59up with the Kansas City cheese. I know these guys in the mid
- 15:01early 30s I think if I believe if I remember right.
- 15:05And how many free agents are there to be losing here as you
- 15:09go on to next season? And another question is I have
- 15:13for you guys, do the Chief really need to tool up and
- 15:17rebuild that season as you're looking forward into the draft
- 15:21next year? Hey, guys.
- 15:23I'll hey listen to go Chief. Thanks, Anthony.
- 15:26I appreciate the call. Yeah, I think they do.
- 15:29And we got, you know, just kind of identified some of the the
- 15:32spots the offense was not great this.
- 15:34Year it was not. By by a long shot.
- 15:36This was not your typical. And they thought they had a cast
- 15:39of receivers and truth be told, so did I that this team was
- 15:42absolutely going to tear up the competition week in and week
- 15:45out. Travis Kelce's numbers are back
- 15:47to where he was when he came into the league.
- 15:49He's still a nice player, but you know, 12 months from now or
- 15:53whatever it is, what does he don't lie.
- 15:55So eight months from now, does he really want to be, you know,
- 15:58he's getting married this offseason, You know, is the
- 16:00training, is the offseason training going to be there?
- 16:03Is he going to really want to run this back?
- 16:05I'm not so sure. The the receivers that were, you
- 16:08know, the greatest thing that they've greatest core of
- 16:12receivers ever assembled didn't materialize.
- 16:14Offensive line couldn't keep Mahomes upright.
- 16:16A lot of time defence is getting older.
- 16:19We'll see. And you say all these things,
- 16:21Ken. They're sixth in defence,
- 16:24they're 7th in offense in the NFL.
- 16:26It seems like they're down. It is one score games go
- 16:30through. They had a historic run last
- 16:33year, score victories and it dated back to the year previous
- 16:35where they won all the one score games and you don't do that, but
- 16:38it normally normalizes and this year they are I think one in
- 16:41seven. Well, Denver's done it this
- 16:42year. Right.
- 16:42And that'll normalize next year and they'll take a step back and
- 16:45you'll be freaking. Out going to do that right?
- 16:46Yes. Yes, not them.
- 16:48That's what happens, That's what has happened.
- 16:49You're #1 Minnesota Vikings and Kevin O'Connell.
- 16:52What happened? They won everyone score game and
- 16:54they're great. The next year, guess what
- 16:56happened? It regressed.
- 16:58They didn't win those one score games.
- 16:59They missed the playoffs last year.
- 17:01What happened? The Vikings won all their one
- 17:03score games. What's happening this year?
- 17:05They didn't win their one score games and now they are going to
- 17:07miss the playoffs. That is the NFL and for the
- 17:10Chiefs. Did they play a lot of 1 score
- 17:12games this year in Minnesota? Not as many, but just in
- 17:15general. You understand the thinking
- 17:16here. This is year in, year out.
- 17:18You want to look at something. Look at one score differential.
- 17:21Those are the teams that regress.
- 17:23Those are the teams that take a step forward.
- 17:25It normalizes year after year after year.
- 17:27And what do you go through? And you look at the Kansas City
- 17:29Chiefs A1 score. Loss last week to the Chargers,
- 17:32A1 score. Loss to the Cowboys, A1 score.
- 17:34Loss to the Broncos, A1 score. Loss to the Bills, A1 score.
- 17:37Loss to the Jaguars. A1 score.
- 17:39Loss against Eagles, A1 score. No loss against the Chargers.
- 17:42Boom. Listen, there it is.
- 17:43Listen to that schedule and. Then you got that too, right?
- 17:47I mean, it's one playoff team after another.
- 17:49Let's get Nate in here. Nate, how are you?
- 17:51Then we'll get a break. We're going to talk Vikings with
- 17:52Dame Mosutani. Where do they go?
- 17:54They found their quarterback. What are they seeing out of JJ
- 17:56McCarthy? I'll tell you what I saw.
- 17:58I saw a quarterback that looked like maybe he's got a chance.
- 18:01I'm not going to get ahead of myself, but last Sunday night
- 18:04was certainly a positive. Hey, Nate.
- 18:07Hey Ken, your favorite Chiefs fan?
- 18:08Good to. Hear from you.
- 18:09Hitch is a couple numbers real quick.
- 18:11That's going to be really tough for them next year.
- 18:14They going to have to knock the draft out of the park.
- 18:18You I'll leave the number one cap hit alone for what?
- 18:22What's on the books next year. Want to take a guess what Chris
- 18:26Jones is his cap hit next year? Oh God, Cap hit next year?
- 18:314 million. It's how many?
- 18:3444 million. 40, that's quarterback cap hit money.
- 18:38Wow. I guess what the quarterback cap
- 18:40hit is next year without I mean it's, it's going to get
- 18:42restructured and stretched out. So it won't be this, but 78
- 18:46million. Jesus.
- 18:48I'm looking at it down. I mean, it's it's.
- 18:51And what that 10 year contract was meant to be, they, they kept
- 18:54Reese, you know, every the first couple of years they
- 18:56restructured, restructured, restructured.
- 18:58Well, you do your signing bonus, you spread your signing bonus
- 19:01out every year. And now the bills coming to get
- 19:04paid. I mean, it'll get restructured
- 19:06down to a management level. But I'd argue with you on the
- 19:09offensive line though. It's just been injuries this
- 19:11year. They drafted their left.
- 19:12I like Simmons a lot. I like Simmons a lot.
- 19:14Yeah, obviously Simmons and Trey Smith and Creed Humphrey, those
- 19:18are three, I think, elite pieces.
- 19:20They're their draft pick from last year that they thought was
- 19:23going to be a left tackle is turning out to be an awesome
- 19:29left guard. So there's four years.
- 19:31Which one the the, the guy the the Hawaiian last name?
- 19:34Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, Kingsley, Kingsley, Sue
- 19:37Kingsley. And then now they've got Esta
- 19:40pole from Washington State that they cut for some reason, went
- 19:44to The Jets, got cut. He's now playing left tackle and
- 19:47is not doing too bad. Yeah, they pointed that out
- 19:53there. I think they're during the
- 19:53broadcast against the Chargers that they were happy with his
- 19:56production. So, yeah.
- 19:57All right. So there, I mean, played right,
- 20:00played right tackle a little bit at Washington State.
- 20:02So your offensive line might be OK.
- 20:05Yeah, No, I know they like Simmons a ton, As they should.
- 20:08Juwan Taylor's getting a little old, isn't he?
- 20:10Always gets that, you know? Goes bright before, is it?
- 20:15Yeah. Yeah, yeah, it's cap next cap at
- 20:18next year's outrageous and it's like 5-4 or five million in dead
- 20:23cap to cut him. He's there's no way he's on the.
- 20:25Team and what's the injuries? Moore is that his name?
- 20:28The guy that was, he was kind of really more yeah, yeah.
- 20:31He'll be next year. I mean, he's going to be a $15
- 20:34million swing tackle or him. And at Chipotle, that'll be the
- 20:37right tackle. Nate, thanks for the call.
- 20:39Appreciate it. Good to hear from you.
- 20:41By the way, Mitch Holtis will join us tomorrow at 12:45, 12-50
- 20:45ish. Look forward to catching,
- 20:46catching up with Mitt. It's just going to be, it's just
- 20:48weird. It is.
- 20:49How's this team going to get through these next three?
- 20:51Would you bet on them? Would you bet against them?
- 20:54They're oh, per game. Yes, I know they'll get up for
- 20:59Denver on Christmas night because it's a divisional foe
- 21:02with a pulse, right? They won't against the Raiders,
- 21:04even though that's a great rivalry.
- 21:05These the Raiders are they're terrible.
- 21:09They got the Titans this week, right?
- 21:11By the way, Speaking of that game, we'll get the Dame
- 21:14Mazatani a second here. What's I know the map is not out
- 21:18yet. Take a look at CB S S early
- 21:20window on Sunday. NFL schedule Week 1.
- 21:30What do we get to Week 15? All right.
- 21:33Week 15 or 16. 16 There you go. 21st CBS has got Chiefs of
- 21:37Titans, Bengals at Dolphins, Bills at Browns or Jets at
- 21:47Saints. What a load of crap.
- 21:49We'll get Kansas City. We'll get Kansas City.
- 21:51Yes, and probably everybody in the state will get Kansas City.
- 21:54The only other game would be Buffalo at Cleveland.
- 21:57Yeah, but they won't give us that.
- 21:59Stone game. Fingers crossed, yeah.
- 22:02It's Terry. What is Fox got in the early
- 22:04window. That's where the everybody in
- 22:06certainly central I will be, I would assume.
- 22:08I'm going to guess we're going to be served up Vikings, the
- 22:10Giants, because it's either that or Tampa Carolina, though for
- 22:13division supremacy or the Chargers at Dallas.
- 22:17But at least they got options. I think they'll probably give us
- 22:20the two non playoff teams because again, it's Fox, it's
- 22:24KDSM. And what the Bears and Packers
- 22:27playing on Saturday night? That takes away 2 locals there.
- 22:31Not a great, not a great Sunday. It's good Sunday to have the NFL
- 22:34Ticket. And even.
- 22:35Or YouTube TV. I mean, the late afternoon
- 22:37window, it's two teams with a pulse.
- 22:39The national game is going to be the Steelers at the Lions, and
- 22:42it's just kind of OK. Yeah, it's not great.
- 22:45No, because Denver hosts Jacksonville at the Three O 5
- 22:48spot. Three O 5.
- 22:50Brutal. Dame Mazzutani next Miller and
- 22:52Condon. Glad you're with us.
- 22:53It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 22:58I just passed 1230. Millory Condon, Welcome back,
- 23:00Iowa Sports Radio Network. We'll catch up with the sports
- 23:03director at KCCI Channel 8, Scott Reister.
- 23:06He's got a big event tonight. Toys for Tots Fairway on oral
- 23:09labor in Ankeny from six until 7.
- 23:12Let's head north. Dane Mosutani.
- 23:14He covers the Vikings for the Saint Paul Pioneer Press,
- 23:17twincities.com. That's Dane's primary beat.
- 23:20He was a Jerry World on on Sunday night to witness the
- 23:24Vikings takedown the Cowboys. Dane, thanks for jumping on with
- 23:27us. Always appreciate, appreciate
- 23:28your contribution to our program.
- 23:30Obviously, the JJ McCarthy arrow, at least after this past
- 23:34week, seemingly pointed in the right direction, pointed up.
- 23:38How did the giddy go over with his team mates and then with his
- 23:40coaches? Was that looking at the two
- 23:43different lenses perhaps? You can talk about the gritty on
- 23:47the way. Yes, Sir.
- 23:48Yes, Sir. I don't think the coaches liked
- 23:51it, I think his team mates did. I don't know, I thought that his
- 23:56comments after the game kind of made me laugh.
- 23:59You know, he he made clear he was told not to do it in
- 24:02practice and kind of like a little kid, you tell not to
- 24:05touch the stove. He he did it in the game.
- 24:08So I guess when when you're scoring ball fake was very good
- 24:13overall, the performance was very good.
- 24:14So when you're when you're walking into the end zone, I
- 24:17guess you earn your earn the right.
- 24:20But yeah, I think they'd, the coaches would probably prefer
- 24:23more of a Barry Sanders like finish where you just run and
- 24:26you give it to the ref and you go to the side.
- 24:28Goes hand in hand and Collinsworth was talking about
- 24:31this a lot. Everybody in the organization,
- 24:33they want it to happen. For McCarthy, his personality
- 24:36seems different. He he seems weird, little odd,
- 24:39tough guy, sometimes weird. The others, it just tell us
- 24:42about his personality and it just he seems different than, I
- 24:46guess, your prototypical NFL quarterback.
- 24:49Yeah, I was born in 1992, so I think I'm a consider to be a
- 24:53millennial. JJ McCarthy is is a Gen.
- 24:57Z quarterback through and through like he is.
- 25:00He is online. He is all about that.
- 25:02Like he like a lot of the things he does.
- 25:05Like it feels like we're kind of created in the lab to, to go
- 25:10viral on social media. So I think that is like kind of
- 25:13part of his personality. And I don't think he's he's
- 25:16trying to to be somebody that he's not.
- 25:19I think that's who he is. Like if this kid grew up on
- 25:22social media, he's 22 years old, he's Gen.
- 25:25Z, he's as Gen. Z as it gets.
- 25:26And I think at times that can manifest itself in the ways that
- 25:31that make people laugh and sometimes manifest itself in
- 25:34ways that make people cringe. But all of it I do think it is
- 25:39him being authentic to who he is just might not be for everybody.
- 25:43So I like it. I think the slagger is something
- 25:47you need to succeed, especially at that position.
- 25:51I would probably like to see a little bit more production
- 25:54before I see some of the other, you know, extracurriculars that
- 25:59are going on on the field. But again, I think that's who he
- 26:02is at his core. So I can't hate too much for
- 26:04that. Is the game you keep hearing
- 26:07about quarterbacks, young quarterbacks, game starting to
- 26:09slow down? Is that where McCarthy's at now?
- 26:12He certainly has looked better since he's got back in the
- 26:15lineup. And I and Dallas's defense, they
- 26:17were bad early. They're better defense now at
- 26:19this point of the year than they certainly were earlier in the
- 26:22season. Is the game slowing down?
- 26:23Is McCarthy starting to look more and more like they thought
- 26:26he was going to be when they drafted him?
- 26:29Yeah, I think the game, it would be fair to say the game is
- 26:32slowing down. I think some of the improvement
- 26:35has coincided with a change in messaging from from Kevin
- 26:39O'Connell and the coaching staff.
- 26:41It was for a long time. Let's focus on the mechanics.
- 26:44Let's focus on, you know, the base and body at the top of the
- 26:47drop and, you know, your feet and eyes when you release the
- 26:50ball. And in about the past few weeks,
- 26:54it's it's turned into more just just go out, make good decisions
- 26:58and go play. Now it is a chicken or an egg
- 27:01situation. Is the recent success because
- 27:05they have said, you know, screw it with the mechanics.
- 27:08Let's just go be who you are and we'll fix all that other stuff
- 27:12in the offseason. Is that why it's contributed to
- 27:15improve play? Or is it simply that the last
- 27:18two weeks he's played the Washington Commanders and the
- 27:20Dallas Cowboys have two of the worst defenses in the league?
- 27:23I think it's probably a combination of both, but I, I,
- 27:27I'll say like, if you go back and watch that Green Bay Packers
- 27:29game, a lot of the game plan, a lot of the way that the the, the
- 27:33plays were called is a lot of the stuff you saw against the
- 27:36Washington Commanders and the Dallas Cowboys just looked a
- 27:39heck of a lot different when you're going up against an elite
- 27:42defense on the other end. So I don't want to take anything
- 27:44away from what JJ McCarthy has done.
- 27:47He's been impressive. He's showing improvement.
- 27:49It's what you need to see out of a young signal, call it, but I
- 27:54don't think it's the simplest thing.
- 27:56Well, see, they were over coaching him and now they're
- 27:58letting him beat him and he's fixed.
- 28:00I think some of these things that have been issues in the
- 28:03past need to get fixed still because it's not going to work
- 28:07when you're not playing the Commanders and the Cowboys of
- 28:10the world on the defensive side of the ball. 6 catches for 37
- 28:14yards. That's not Justin Jefferson in
- 28:16the first half. That's his last three games.
- 28:18He has two touchdowns this year. We know wide receiver is a
- 28:22position where you get people with some personality and a lot
- 28:25of frustration that comes along with it, and we've seen
- 28:27frustration at times. What do we anticipate the
- 28:30offseason and could there be a push by Jefferson asking his way
- 28:34out of Minnesota? No, no chance.
- 28:37I, I, I would be absolutely stunned if if that was even
- 28:42remotely something that gets talked about 1:00 because it's
- 28:45Vikings will never do it. 2 He's locked into a contract that is
- 28:48extremely untradable. And three, and most importantly,
- 28:52that's not who Justin Jefferson is.
- 28:54Like he has not at any point this season and the door has
- 28:58been open to do it many times rolled JJ McCarthy under the
- 29:02bus. He is not criticizing the
- 29:04coaching staff. He is not at any point made this
- 29:06about himself. And he he could, he could, he
- 29:11has earned the right the cachet to after catching 2 passes for
- 29:1622 yards the other day to say like, throw me the Dang ball.
- 29:20He doesn't do that. And then he never had in his
- 29:23career. And we've talked about this this
- 29:25year just kind of different, you know, channels.
- 29:28But if it was going to happen, I think it would have happened
- 29:31already. And in that at Justin
- 29:33Jefferson's core, he's a happy go lucky kid who loves playing
- 29:36football. And yes, he loves producing
- 29:39yardage, touchdowns, catches, all of that.
- 29:43But I think when he was already team captain last year, that
- 29:46ignited something in him. He understands his position on
- 29:49this team where he, you know, shows up and it's not always on
- 29:54the stat sheet. I think he takes being a leader
- 29:56really, really seriously. And then leadership, he said
- 30:00this last week, leadership is is is showing up when it's hard.
- 30:03And it's been hard at times for Justin Jefferson this season.
- 30:06But at no point do I think he is he has personified the diva
- 30:11mentality that that that tends to kind of come with that
- 30:14position that he plays. So I got nothing but respect for
- 30:17for the way he's handled himself and like I said, I would be
- 30:21absolutely stunned if it results in any sort of drama this
- 30:24Aussie. The respect that you talked
- 30:26about when it comes to the fans of the Vikings when they when
- 30:29they watch Adam Thielen seemingly trying to blow up the
- 30:32relationship as he got to Pittsburgh and said some glowing
- 30:35things about that locker room conflicting with the 1 he was
- 30:39just in. This wasn't.
- 30:40I don't have to tell you, this guy was amazingly popular as a
- 30:43Viking. They wanted him to stay.
- 30:45They were. They were giddy when he was able
- 30:48to come back to begin this year. Obviously it didn't work out.
- 30:52But why did Thielen feel compelled to take the shots?
- 30:54Or did they? Were they seen as a shot across
- 30:57the bow in the Twin Cities? I didn't like it personally and
- 31:00I'm not a fan. I wonder how the fan base was.
- 31:03Yeah, I don't think the fans liked it at all.
- 31:06This is a guy who deserves a ton of respect for the career that
- 31:11he's made for himself and just kind of trying to see things
- 31:15from his perspective and have some empathy that way.
- 31:17Like, I think he made it as an undrafted free agent out of
- 31:22Minnesota State Mankato because of the the intestinal fortitude
- 31:27that he has, because of the belief he had in himself.
- 31:30And I think you see this with athletes sometimes when when
- 31:34it's nearing an end, I think it can be tough to accept that you
- 31:36are what you once were. I think that's what's happening
- 31:39with Adam a little bit right now.
- 31:41I think he believes deep in his heart that he can still
- 31:44contribute at a high level. And he wasn't contributing at a
- 31:47high level really at any level with the Vikings this year.
- 31:50So I think that kind of manifests itself and some of the
- 31:53comments he made. But yeah, the fan base didn't
- 31:56like it. You say you didn't like it.
- 31:57I didn't like it. This guy is a as good as
- 32:02receiver the Vikings have had, and they've had a lot of good
- 32:04receivers in their franchise. He has established a legacy
- 32:08here. And while I don't think those
- 32:10comments tarnish it, I think they certainly kind of just make
- 32:14you look at him a little sideways and say, like, what the
- 32:17heck. Like, this could have been his
- 32:19career is going to be done. I would be pretty surprised he's
- 32:21announced that that he's done at the end of the year, could have
- 32:26gone out in style with the Vikings, with your hometown
- 32:28team, and instead you're going to go finish it out and I guess
- 32:32Pittsburgh might make the playoffs.
- 32:34Is that team contending for a Super Bowl?
- 32:35Like, I don't think it was about ring chasing for Adam Thiel, and
- 32:38I think it was about him feeling appreciated.
- 32:41And even though he's extremely appreciated here, Yeah, I think,
- 32:47I think he missed the mark on those comments.
- 32:48And I think down the road he might regret what he said.
- 32:51Final thing for me, Dane, when you look at this team, the way
- 32:54they're set up, KO, CS not going anywhere.
- 32:57Defense coordinator Brian Flores is not going to be opportunities
- 33:00as as toxic, unfortunately for him as things are to become a
- 33:03head coach again. Quincy no Fomenza what the GM?
- 33:09I don't think firing after the year but maybe hot seat going
- 33:13into 2026. Yeah.
- 33:16I mean, I guess to a degree, we'll see how the final season
- 33:19or final three weeks finish out. You would have told me when they
- 33:23were four and six that they were going to finish four and 13.
- 33:26I would have said, yeah, I think somebody probably has to pay for
- 33:29that. If they can kind of continue the
- 33:33the positive momentum they have established in in this soft part
- 33:36of the schedule and finish let's say 8 and nine, shoot, maybe
- 33:42they went out and go nine and eight.
- 33:43Like, I don't think anyone's necessarily going to get fired
- 33:46for that, even if the Vikings vastly underperformed their
- 33:50expectations by missing the playoffs with a month to play.
- 33:53But yeah, I think Hot Seat's probably fair to say if that's
- 33:57how we want to classify it. I think he has to have a good
- 34:00draft if he's going to be here through this offseason.
- 34:04I think we see documents that has to nail this draft.
- 34:07He has not nailed a draft yet. So I think that is definitely
- 34:11something that that he needs to kind of prove himself with.
- 34:14But you know, a lot of these times, if I can talk about it,
- 34:18like the collaboration, it's not just place you making these
- 34:21decisions, it's everybody making these decisions in concert with
- 34:24each other. Now when they don't work out and
- 34:27then your job is to construct the roster.
- 34:29Like, obviously you're going to be the person that bears the
- 34:32brunt of the blame. But yeah, look, it's not quasi
- 34:35just going out here and drafting JJ McCarthy, who had a say in
- 34:39the JJ McCarthy pick, Kevin O'Connell.
- 34:41So like, all of these guys are connected.
- 34:44But yeah, I think with the drafts that Quasi's had, he
- 34:46certainly has something to prove heading into this all.
- 34:48Give me 30 seconds on this. Your former beat the Minnesota
- 34:51Wild. My God, David.
- 34:53Yeah, we got to get to that. Quinn Hughes, he is a superstar.
- 34:57Other than Kale Makar, I'm not sure there's a defenseman I I
- 35:00appreciate more. I love Morrissey with Winnipeg,
- 35:02but this Quinn Hughes is something they had to give up a
- 35:05ton. The Wild were 30 to 1 to win the
- 35:07Cup. I know the division's
- 35:08unbelievable. Obviously Dallas and Colorado
- 35:11reside there. I thought they got a lot better.
- 35:13That was a that was a hockey trade.
- 35:14Dane Moussatani and. I was wondering if you want to
- 35:17bring that up. Yeah, Look, I know people fall
- 35:22in love with their prospects. It's part of being a fan.
- 35:24You you like seeing guys get drafted and developed and and
- 35:27you fall in love with that kid and you hope that they can be
- 35:29one day a superstar. So people are upset with the
- 35:33Hall. They had to give up.
- 35:35And I think that was the immediate reaction, losing Marco
- 35:37Rossi, losing people. You could be elite at the top of
- 35:41his his level if he reaches it and losing Liam Ogren in a pic
- 35:46like people were saying, oh, we gave up too much.
- 35:48No, you didn't. You make that trade 100 out of
- 35:51100 time. You make that trade 1,000,000
- 35:53out of a million time. Quinn Hughes is the second best
- 35:55defenseman in the world right now on the planet.
- 35:59The first best defenseman is Caleb Makar and he has a chance
- 36:02to be the greatest that's ever done it.
- 36:04Quinn Hughes makes this team exponentially more dangerous
- 36:07than they were a week ago. They're legitimately Stanley Cup
- 36:12contenders now. I don't think they were a week
- 36:14ago before making that trade. So phenomenal job by Bill Garen.
- 36:19And then people of the cynics are saying, well, he's just
- 36:21going to leave for New Jersey in 18 months maybe.
- 36:24But if if they can make a push this year, nobody's leaving a
- 36:27team that they think can win the Stanley Cup.
- 36:29Great stuff, Dane. Appreciate what you do for us.
- 36:31Thanks for doing this. Happy holidays.
- 36:33Merry Christmas. We will talk to you down the
- 36:35road. Thanks, Dane.
- 36:37Anytime, guys. Yeah.
- 36:37Good to talk to you. Dane.
- 36:38Mazatani on the Vikings and just a massive hockey trade.
- 36:41We'll take a time out. Come back.
- 36:42Scott Reister's next. Miller and Condon.
- 36:44Iowa Sports Radio Network. Miller and Condon, welcome back.
- 36:47Wasn't expected Christmas music here, TC.
- 36:50Throw you off a little bit hard. It did.
- 36:52Let's get right. Scott Reister.
- 36:53We're up against time because like 3 1/2 minutes left.
- 36:56Scott Reister joins us. He along with former NFL running
- 36:59back Fred Jackson, who Co college graduate spent most of
- 37:02his career in Buffalo before finishing up in Seattle, will be
- 37:07at the Fairway store oral labor tonight.
- 37:10It's Toys for Tots. You've done this a lot over your
- 37:12career, Scott Reister, and you're going to be back out out
- 37:16tonight with Jackson and Santa and yourself.
- 37:19Tell us all the details. What time will we be there?
- 37:22Yeah, fire trucks. Sorry, getting attacked by a 12
- 37:26LB dog right now who wants to bark everything.
- 37:29Yeah, it's going to be super fun.
- 37:31Alright, let me go outside. Great timing, right?
- 37:34Yeah, there's going to be a fire truck out there also full of
- 37:36toys. It's the KCCI Toys for Tots Dr.
- 37:40There's been drop off locations all day.
- 37:42Ankeny on or Labor Rd. you can go right now, drop it off.
- 37:46Also Prairie Meadows, if you head to our KCCI app, you can
- 37:49sell the drop off locations. But really the highlight is
- 37:51going to be yeah, Fred Jackson's been involved for a couple years
- 37:54now. I think it's the fourth year
- 37:55he's coming out and he'll be there at 6:00.
- 37:58I'll be out there a little bit before that doing the newscast
- 38:00at four or five, six. We'll be out there on the air
- 38:03till 7:00. Fred brings his little family,
- 38:05usually they donate a bunch of toys.
- 38:07So yeah, he signs autographs, takes pictures.
- 38:09It's just, you know, a great feeling everybody has by
- 38:12bringing a new unwrapped toy to drop off for kids that need it
- 38:16and just, you know, hang out with Fred and do whatever.
- 38:19And then Santa's there. Then the big fire truck full of
- 38:21toys comes. It's been picking up left from
- 38:23all the other toy locations across the metro that that we've
- 38:25been collecting. So you could not be in a better
- 38:28mood after after this. It'll all be on TV on KCCI.
- 38:31So like kind of a neat random thing that Fred Jackson's been
- 38:34living in Iowa all these years and he's really jumped on board
- 38:37and added some star power to it. Absolutely and his son over at
- 38:41the University of Iowa just completed his true freshman year
- 38:43red shirt of this year and see if he's been toting the rock
- 38:46here of next season. The next couple for the
- 38:48Hawkeyes. You mentioned the connection
- 38:50that you guys have Toys for Tots.
- 38:52You've been doing this for a number of years.
- 38:54You know, we had an opportunity last week working with variety
- 38:56to do it. Just the stories that I'm sure
- 38:58Scott, you hear some of those stories and these, these
- 39:01youngsters out there that I don't know if there's going to
- 39:03be anything under the tree or maybe not even a tree at their
- 39:05house. What Toys for Todd does here for
- 39:07our community? Oh, it's unbelievable.
- 39:09It's AUS Marine Corps program and thank goodness there's
- 39:12programs like this, because many of us are blessed not to even
- 39:15think twice about the ability to go out and, you know, buy some
- 39:18presents for everybody. But the reality is to borrow
- 39:21what Matt Campbell ISM, you know, that's not that's not how
- 39:23it is for a lot of people. And Fred Jackson, one of the
- 39:26reasons he's great is, you know, he was one of those families
- 39:29growing up and he always been one of the reasons he comes out
- 39:32every year, he tells the story, you know, he was in that family
- 39:35growing up that he knows what it's like not to have anything
- 39:37on Christmas. And now that he's, he's, he's
- 39:40big time, you know, he loves giving back and loves being able
- 39:43to provide that, that moment for those kids.
- 39:46And so you look at these just absolute mountain of toys that
- 39:50pile up over the day. And it's really neat to see and
- 39:52and and really the worthwhile 'cause.
- 39:54I got only 30 seconds left. Scott Six to seven tonight, a
- 39:57fairway oral labor role. But where?
- 40:00Where on the app can you find out?
- 40:01KCCI. You can find out all the drop
- 40:03off locations in central Iowa. Where should people go?
- 40:07Yeah, absolutely. Just home Casey style, see right
- 40:09there. We're also going to be at the
- 40:10Waukee Waukee Northwest basketball game at Washington
- 40:12Northwest High School for that showdown and have drop offs
- 40:15there. So they're having a nice
- 40:16competition between the two schools.
- 40:17So thank you guys so much. I appreciate it.
- 40:19Good stuff. Thank you, Scott.
- 40:20Appreciate Scott Reister, KCCI Channel 8 Sports Director over
- 40:24there Toys for Tots. Outstanding work by that group
- 40:27and Scott mentioned the Marines very much involved in that
- 40:31charitable organization. Our number 2 Elliot Clef will
- 40:35kick it off Bill Bender on the upcoming College Football
- 40:38Playoff round #1 Miller and Condon are on the Iowa Sports
- 40:41Radio Network.
