- 0:52Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh, we're grateful to have you with us on that journey to reaching and helping three billion people over the course of my lifetime and beyond.
- 1:03Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh, for this show, we're we're gonna talk about uh my mental health and uh hopefully checking in with your mental health to see how you're doing.
- 1:15Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And again, I'm not a doctor, I'm not a licensed social worker, I'm just a person that's been living with mental illnesses for a long period of my life.
- 1:30Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um so one, I I went to went to the uh the addentist a couple weeks ago, and I there's episodes they'll tell you all about how my my teeth, my oral health was uh when I was at I guess the some of the lower points in my life uh when I started to rejuvenate as a person.
- 2:06Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um so I went, didn't have any cavities.
- 2:11Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I think I've had as many cavities as can be, so it's uh it's a small win.
- 2:20Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And the the dental hygienist was was asking about if I had dry mouth.
- 2:34Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um and I said, Yeah, I I do.
- 2:43Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh and I said, yeah, you know, you know, they have a list of you know my medical health and all that, and and I said, uh I know that it can happen to people taking medications, and she said, yeah, and so she worked she recommended a certain kind of uh mouth rinse, mouthwash, uh these uh basically like tic-tacks, but you can like chew them in the gum, and it's the ingredient the main ingredient that's in both of those products is to help uh keep our mouth so it doesn't dry out as quickly as it does for me.
- 3:46Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so I I went to the store.
- 3:50Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh and so how's that play a role in my mental health?
- 3:55Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Well, I'm taking medications for my mental health, so that's that's an easy one for me to answer.
- 4:06Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh so I purchased these products.
- 4:11Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Oh, and because I had the Invisalign on braces on my teeth, and then now I wore them as like the overnight instead of all throughout the day.
- 4:28Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: That also can cause dry mouth, which I wasn't aware of that that aspect.
- 4:35Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Again, I don't I don't know everything, nobody does.
- 4:40Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh so I bought I I got these products, and actually I got three different ones.
- 4:49Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I got the mouth rinse, I got the ones that you can chew into like gum, and it has that ingredient to help keep our mouth moist, and then there's these uh I can't even explain what uh but they're they're they're basically they're they're harder and they've this they're they dissolve.
- 5:18Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so what you do if I'm wearing when I wear the Invisalign, uh, and again it'd be nice to have them as a sponsor since I spent copious amounts of money on them, but that's neither here here nor there.
- 5:36Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So if I didn't have the Invisalign retainers at night, I would attach this you know little say this little it's not a ball, it's just it's just a tiny circle, I guess.
- 5:58Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And the one end, or the one side, you press it against one of your back molars for 10 seconds, and then it stays in place.
- 6:09Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And there's you're it's recommended you do two every night, so it could do both on the right, you know, the top and bottom on the right side, top bottom on the left side, the top and top, the bottom anyways.
- 6:27Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So it was and it was was it a week?
- 6:35Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I don't even know if it was a week.
- 6:39Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so I started noticing.
- 6:43Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So, first off, the the products were I guess it was better than not having them, I guess, is the way I look at it.
- 6:52Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Like, let's look at it without using them, and let's look at them with using them.
- 6:58Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So the ones for over the night, one's for during the day, and the other one's for you know brushing teeth and after flossing and brushing and that.
- 7:10Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Well, anyways, so I was noticing during the night, it might have been a weekend into the whole regimen, or it might have been four or five days.
- 7:26Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I don't know, whatever the amount of time is, it doesn't matter.
- 7:29Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: What does matter is I would wake myself up coughing almost as if I would have a cold and and you know, like uh have this nagging cough, and and it took me like what felt like a long time to get it under control, and so right, you know, I'm sleeping, I got these in my mouth, they're dissolving, they're doing what they're supposed to do, and then I just start coughing in the middle of the night, and so I I don't know for sure, but I think by me doing all three of those products that I was getting too moist of a mouth, and so that was almost in a sense was it making I don't know that it was making me choke at all.
- 8:38Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It maybe it was and maybe that's what the what what I was realizing is there's just too much saliva in my mouth, and I'm sleeping, and I'm not resting sleep, and and there's again all the saliva from these uh these products, and and so then I started noticing like every night that I would use these ones, um, and so since I do the Invisalign overnight retainers, you can do the same thing to like your like your gums, uh you know, hold it for 10 seconds and then they dissolve through the night and and that and so I I don't know if anybody else watching or listening has had that happen to them and knows anybody that that's happened to them.
- 9:45Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Like, is that is that just par for the core?
- 9:52Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So like that's just what you get when when use these these products.
- 10:01Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh so since then I've I think it's only been one night, maybe two, that I haven't done the ones at night.
- 10:12Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh because it again, it was wake it, it was really waking me up from sleep and having this oh, the the cough.
- 10:27Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I mean, like I said, it felt like I had a cold.
- 10:32Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And then when I woke up, and then I finally, you know, I was drinking water and eating, and then it would be somewhat back to normal, and then in between meals I would have the gum one, and so I might do like two of those during the day.
- 10:53Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I think chiclets is a good uh a good uh comparison, I guess.
- 11:03Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Yeah, comparison of as far as like the texture, it's a little bit harder on the outside, but then start chewing it, and it does its thing.
- 11:16Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so that was really affecting my mental health because there were some shows I wanted to film, and I would have like a hoarse voice like I kinda have now because I haven't used any of them today.
- 11:39Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I did the mouthwash today so far, but I didn't do any of the other ones.
- 11:47Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And I don't usually have a problem during the day with with these, so they're helpful, but I I I have to manage them because right, if if I'm doing a show, I need to talk for me right now.
- 12:08Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I I have you know good good enough lungs, uh vocal cords, and you know, I I'm in decent shape that way.
- 12:23Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so if it if what these products do overnight change that, and if I'm filming episodes in the morning, it can have a big impact, I guess is what I'm getting at.
- 12:41Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh not to mention there's a lot of other work, vocal work, that I also am doing, and so that's cut three or four days probably out of that amount of time that I would usually have to do this other other work.
- 13:15Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so I'm just curious, like, are these you know dry mouth products?
- 13:22Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I I don't I don't know that there's at least for me, there's not like an really an argument of you know, does it work or doesn't it work?
- 13:32Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It's just more like has anybody else noticed that you know during the night where you know you wake up, kind of have a hacking cough, and uh yeah, it's it's not fun, it's not fun at all.
- 13:54Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It is uh it's very troubling because like I said, the product so far has worked, so I really wouldn't have a reason not to use it unless something like this were to happen, and so that so it is happening, and and so I'm a little bit hesitant, you know, when it comes you know, resting time, you know, to do or not to do, I I guess is the the way to let look at it.
- 14:28Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So you know, any comments that anybody has, definitely let me know, let us know, so then we can pass it along to our viewership and our listenership.
- 14:41Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh they may be wondering the same thing, or maybe they're not, and then they go to the dentist, or they get braces, and they notice they have dry mouth, and it's not hilarious, funny, but the funny part about the whole dry mouth thing is you know, so at the dentist, you know they're they're cleaning the teeth, and then and then they spray like water in and then spit and then do that to get the toothpaste and all this grimy uh product, you know, that they they use, you know, out of our mouth.
- 15:28Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And the dental hygienist said, even with the water, I have like a dry mouth.
- 15:39Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And like right, and water is supposed to, and it is, water is a liquid, but even the water, even for a sustained amount of time, wasn't helping.
- 15:57Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I mean, I guess I wish I'd have known this a while ago, but I'm grateful that she noticed it.
- 16:07Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh, I don't know if other, you know, over the years, other dental hygienists have noticed it, and it's just they're just like, all right, let's get this person done and get them out of here, like all these cavities, and we're filling them and do some crown and uh root canal and whatever.
- 16:29Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I mean, I've had, I think, just about everything except dentures.
- 16:35Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh oh, so yeah.
- 16:41Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It's kind of like to be or not to be, to to use or not to use.
- 16:47Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh and so that affects my mental health, right?
- 16:51Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: If I plan on doing something the next day, and I can't, then it affects my mental health.
- 16:56Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Going, all right, I'm a day behind.
- 16:58Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: All right, I'm two days behind, I'm three days behind.
- 17:04Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Kind of like the gym.
- 17:08Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: You know, go to the gym two days in a row, take a day off, two days in a row, take a day off, one day in a row, one day off, one day, one day, and then two days off, and then one day, and then three, one day on, three days off.
- 17:25Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And that plays with my head.
- 17:27Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Like, all right, like are you gonna get back to the gym?
- 17:31Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh and so I'm in that that phase, but as we know with schedules, that we uh we we we sometimes get off our schedule, and there's not a whole lot we can do about it, just to kind of remain focused that when the time comes that we're ready, and then we just we just go back to the gym and do our workout and and then just keep on with it.
- 18:05Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So between the dry mouth and then some extra days not at the gym, uh that's really taking a little bit of a toll on my mental health because there's things right, I want I want to go to the gym, so I want to check that box.
- 18:27Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I want to do the voice work, I want to film the shows, but I haven't been able to do them at the rate that I and and we do, but it's okay.
- 18:44Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So the thing is, is to stay within ourselves, to stay grounded in the moment, and then be ready for the time when we're able to do whatever that thing or things are, where that thing is, things are.
- 19:12Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: But yeah, so it's crazy, right?
- 19:14Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I'm we're talking about dry mouth for 20 minutes.
- 19:17Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It's like like who would have thought, but yes, that does have mental health impact, and yes, the gym, right?
- 19:26Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Because the gym helps with a little bit of the little bit of the mood uh in a positive way, and so it's like I want to go to the gym, I want to go to the gym, but I know I can't this day, or I know I can't go because of this day or that day, and so the key is just to remain focused, not to get too down on ourselves, which I do.
- 19:57Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I'm a human, so I do get down at times.
- 20:01Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: We all do, I think.
- 20:09Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so just gotta be ready, right?
- 20:16Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Just like a backup quarterback in American football.
- 20:19Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Just gotta be ready.
- 20:22Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Might not get a lot of practice with the first team, the starters, but if that first quarterback has an injury, your number gets called, my number gets called, we gotta go in, and we gotta perform to keep our job.
- 20:43Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so it's the same thing with gotta find a way to get it done.
- 20:53Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: You know, it's one thing traveling and having a little bit difficult time getting to the gym.
- 21:05Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: But like when you're at home and I'm at home, it that I think that's that's the part that really really gets my mind going, oh come on, Justin, like we we gotta do it, we gotta go.
- 21:30Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I don't I mean some of them are like coming out of like hibernation, uh, but it's it's not the muscle thing, it's just getting in a positive routine.
- 21:46Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And I was in a really good positive routine for four months, four months, four weeks or so, and then this gone down.
- 21:58Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Now I've been able I've We'll say this the days I missed the gym, I have been able to accomplish what I've wanted to accomplish outside of the gym and outside of the voice work and outside of the filming.
- 22:11Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So we kind of take those things to the one side, and then the the things that are kind of impeding us going to the gym, going to voice work, filming the shows, been able to do those.
- 22:26Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So that means I won't have to repeat those particular things.
- 22:36Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Doesn't mean that others aren't gonna come up, just means that the ones that were intended to complete were completed.
- 22:50Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And see how, right?
- 22:52Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Now we're going on 25 minutes.
- 22:57Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: People are like, how can you how can you turn this into because it's real, it's real life.
- 23:04Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Like it happens.
- 23:08Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Some have dry mouth, some don't.
- 23:11Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I I never thought like twice through about it.
- 23:15Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Then I was like, well, yeah, I actually do.
- 23:23Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So we have the conversation about it.
- 23:25Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And we had a conversation about the gym and how that mentality can hurt us a little bit if we're not if we're not if we're not watching carefully enough.
- 23:45Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Like it's one thing to go, okay, one day on, two days off, one day on, three days off, but once you get to like a whole week being off, then that's when you know the alarm should be ringing.
- 24:02Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um, just as our doorbell alarm was ringing at the end of our uh one of our previous shows.
- 24:11Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So you probably heard the doorbell, and you definitely heard Lucy uh barking.
- 24:20Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh again, it's life, it happens.
- 24:25Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So that's why we leave it in.
- 24:26Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: We leave it in the show.
- 24:30Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It's it's it's relatable.
- 24:34Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: You may have a pet, you may know somebody that has a pet.
- 24:39Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: You know, and you start thinking, like, well, okay, well, yeah, I can put her in her kennel and go downstairs.
- 24:46Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: You start thinking through these things, and it's like, you know what?
- 24:50Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Just like this show, she has Lucy's been pretty inactive, but she's taking a little snooze.
- 24:58Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I think she took a lot of her energy out when she was barking, um, and running around back and forth and barking, and uh I think she expended a whole a whole lot of energy.
- 25:14Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: But I can't help it.
- 25:16Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: She's a dog, like so we we keep it in.
- 25:23Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Is it the most pleasant thing?
- 25:25Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: No, it's not.
- 25:27Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: We keep it in because we're relatable, we're really human beings.
- 25:34Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It's not AI what you're watching and listening with the voices for voices, podcasts, and TV show.
- 25:41Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I can assure you that a number one, that is not this is not, and that is not AI.
- 25:52Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So it's real life.
- 25:54Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It's me, it's me, it's me.
