- 0:00I remember I dry shampoo in my hair, I was in my sweatpants and
- 0:02I'm like, I hit 7 figures. Huh.
- 0:06That moment was not triumphant at all.
- 0:09I think we've been sold this idea, especially in the online
- 0:12space, that $1,000,000 means that you've made it, when
- 0:16truthfully, I know a lot of people who make $1,000,000 and
- 0:19more a year who are completely freaking miserable.
- 0:22Listen, I think we should get her tested.
- 0:24Something's not right here about the way that she's applying
- 0:27herself. As soon as I got this label of
- 0:29having learning disability, I found myself also not really
- 0:31having a lot of belief in me because other people had told me
- 0:34that I shouldn't. I had an ish that I wanted to do
- 0:37something bigger and I just couldn't figure out what it was.
- 0:40The way that I built my business coaching for the first year was
- 0:43sustainable by any means. It was a level of hustle and
- 0:46grit that I had to do because I needed to prove to myself that I
- 0:50could do it. We're being taught basically the
- 0:52dude way of doing it, but trying to fit ourselves into that box
- 0:56and frankly, it's not going to work.
- 0:58Hello and welcome back to Ambitious.
- 1:01Today. We are doing something a little
- 1:03bit different than we have in other episodes.
- 1:05And that is because every single time that I think about a topic
- 1:09for Ambitious and I think about writing out something that I
- 1:11want to discuss or I start to make notes on things that I want
- 1:14to teach you, I often think about you and I think about what
- 1:17do you want to learn? What do you need support with?
- 1:19What are you experiencing right now?
- 1:21And then I often find that I'm always talking in the context of
- 1:25thinking of you. But I've recently had a lot of
- 1:28people who've asked me, can you tell us a little bit more about
- 1:31your journey, meaning my experience, my, you know, coming
- 1:35up story, if you will, to how I started way back when till now
- 1:41and how I was able to get my business to a multiple 7 figure
- 1:43business. Every time that I go to a
- 1:45speaking opportunity to speak on stage, if I'm on a podcast, it's
- 1:49the question at our networking dinners, it's one of the core
- 1:51questions. Can you tell us how you did it?
- 1:54Can you tell us a little bit about kind of what the journey
- 1:56looked like? Because I think so many times
- 1:59when we're consuming people online, we see they're kind of
- 2:02like quote UN quote, rags to riches, right?
- 2:04You see this idea of like, they started here and now they're
- 2:08here and poof, they're successful.
- 2:10And I think often times most of us are really curious about the
- 2:13context. How long did it take?
- 2:15What did it look like? What was your upbringing?
- 2:17Did you come from money? All of these things start to
- 2:20come in as questions and curiosities for us.
- 2:22And so as somebody who often gets those questions and those
- 2:26curiosities anytime that I'm networking with people or that
- 2:29I'm at events, I thought what a good opportunity for me to kind
- 2:32of dedicate an episode to this. So in today's episode, we're
- 2:35going to be breaking down literally every single chapter
- 2:39of the journey of how I got started all the way up until
- 2:43this current point in my business and how we did it.
- 2:46And the thing that I will say is probably going to be the the
- 2:49focus of today is not just, you know, the history in the sense
- 2:54of the timeline. But with that, I also really
- 2:57want to explain what it truly looks like in the sense of the
- 3:00milestones or phases, because I will tell you it was not linear.
- 3:04I did not have a linear journey of, you know, I started doing
- 3:08this and then it just, I crushed and crushed and crushed and
- 3:11crushed. And now I'm crushing just on a
- 3:12huge level. Like it did not look like that.
- 3:14It was actually, in my opinion, extremely messy.
- 3:17I had a lot of pivots and there was a lot of new versions that
- 3:21were created along the way. And that's because I found that
- 3:25I really just kind of like pulled the thread that was in
- 3:28front of me. And so I want to kind of speak
- 3:29to that today. And by the end of today's
- 3:32episode, you'll really start to see how all of the things that I
- 3:36went through, all of the things that I tried and tested actually
- 3:40were a key catalyst in me getting to where I am with
- 3:43myself and with my Business Today.
- 3:53So we're going to go back and we're going to break this into a
- 3:55couple stages. Stage 1, I really want to start
- 3:57at the beginning because often a question and a curiosity, at
- 4:00least I find that I have these is we wonder, like the person
- 4:04who, you know, became financially successful, did they
- 4:08come from money? And you'll even see when we,
- 4:10when we think about, you know, some others in business or in,
- 4:13you know, personal brand spaces who are successful, we sometimes
- 4:17minimize their success because they, quote UN quote, came from
- 4:19money. And so I also want to go way
- 4:21back. We're not just going to start
- 4:23with me as a server, which is the most, you know, common thing
- 4:25that people know. They know like server to seven
- 4:27figures as like the kind of slogan for me, which is fine.
- 4:30But there really was kind of like a, a Phase, I would say, or
- 4:33some learning that led up to that, that we're really
- 4:36influential in what I do today. So first I want to talk a little
- 4:40bit about I obviously, right now I'm 32.
- 4:42I grew up in the Toronto area in Canada.
- 4:46I am the second youngest of four kids.
- 4:48So I have an older sister and older brother and a younger
- 4:51brother in our family. And I was mainly raised by a
- 4:55single mom. I was someone who did not have
- 4:58any entrepreneurs in my immediate circle.
- 5:01I will say that in my household, not because it was necessarily,
- 5:05you know, demonized, it wasn't actually that, you know,
- 5:07entrepreneurship was bad. It's just it wasn't really
- 5:09something talked about. It wasn't really something that
- 5:11I would say was supported or discussed.
- 5:14I didn't really even, to be honest, in most of my
- 5:16upbringing, ever even consider becoming an entrepreneur because
- 5:20I associated, as many do, entrepreneurship with being
- 5:23risky, being very roller coaster, unpredictable.
- 5:27Also, we always for this thing of, you know, most businesses
- 5:30don't make it past the first five years.
- 5:32And so when we see slogans like that and we see terms like that
- 5:35or quotes like that, it doesn't necessarily encourage us to be
- 5:38like, yeah, let's go start a business.
- 5:40So I found when I was growing up, I was kind of given, you
- 5:44know, with my mom, this prescription of this is what
- 5:48success looks like. And what that meant was you went
- 5:51to school, you got, you know, into what we consider here,
- 5:54university or college. You got a, you know, a good
- 5:57degree, you got a good job, you got married, you got a house,
- 6:00you had kids, you got a family and you live halfway ever after.
- 6:04Maybe get a white picket fence and a dog, right?
- 6:05Like that was what I was taught growing up as the the way to be
- 6:10successful. And the thing I will say about
- 6:13that is, you know, a couple themes.
- 6:15I will say being raised by a single mom for, you know, I was
- 6:19on and off. So my parents got divorced when
- 6:21I was pretty young. And I did go back and forth for
- 6:23a while between my mom and my dad's side.
- 6:25But I will give a little bit of, you know, context.
- 6:28So when I was younger, my grandparents won the lottery.
- 6:35And actually, if you, you know, want to be a little nosy, Nelly,
- 6:38you could literally look this up.
- 6:39You know, my grandparents, they were immigrants who came to
- 6:43Canada from Germany and Croatia. And my grandpa actually was like
- 6:47an electrician, had tried to kind of start his own business.
- 6:50And he was doing that and really just trying to provide for his
- 6:54two kids, which is my dad. And my grandparents won the
- 6:57lottery of $7,000,000. And so in this there was, and
- 7:03it's its own story, which I'm not going to be sharing today.
- 7:06But basically the summary of it being that while there was lots
- 7:10of money that could have been accessible within my family, I
- 7:14wouldn't say that that money was necessarily accessible to my mom
- 7:18as well as us as the children. And so that's an important
- 7:22factor because I could see and I in certain moments was able to
- 7:28really understand the impact that finances had on someone's
- 7:31lifestyle, that finances had on, you know, someone's mental
- 7:35health, like what it meant to be able to have lots of money.
- 7:39I could see what that looked like and that on the contrast
- 7:44here was my mom, who was, you know, really a single mom trying
- 7:48to provide and trying to guide and raise four children on the
- 7:51salary of someone who worked at a local bank.
- 7:56And so she was doing the best that she could.
- 7:59But obviously just in natural comparison, you will see on one
- 8:03side of my family, there's lots of of finances accessible and on
- 8:06what the other side of the family, there's not a lot of
- 8:08finances accessible. So I had this really kind of
- 8:12like, like, you know, stark contrast of one side lots of
- 8:17money, other side no money. And it taught me a lot.
- 8:20It taught me a lot about what finances could do for you, and
- 8:24it also taught me what lack of finances meant in the sense of
- 8:27lifestyle and again, mindset, all of that.
- 8:30So growing up, I feel like I saw what millions of dollars did for
- 8:36somebody very quickly, very first hand experience of what
- 8:39that meant and how when my grandparents won the lottery,
- 8:42their lives were able to change and also their kids.
- 8:45Therefore, you know, my dad and his family, how their lives were
- 8:49able to change. Now, the thing that I will say
- 8:52is that this time was also really difficult for me because
- 8:56I had the mindset growing up of like finances were always so
- 9:00close to me, but not necessarily always accessible.
- 9:04So you kind of had this. I could be wealthy, I could be
- 9:08rich, but it wasn't my it wasn't obviously my money.
- 9:12And so it could have come down to me, but didn't necessarily.
- 9:15And on the flip side, you know, I've also got this other lens
- 9:19where I'm trying to unpack, OK, well, you know, I'm seeing how
- 9:23my mom is struggling. I'm seeing how my mom is busting
- 9:26her butt to support and provide for four children.
- 9:29And here I am in the middle. And I'm trying to think, OK,
- 9:31like I have part of my mindset, which is scarcity.
- 9:34And then I have part of my mindset, which is abundance.
- 9:37And so that teeter totter really messed with me because I, I
- 9:40couldn't quite figure out many of us have a money story, right?
- 9:43And so when I grew up, I didn't really know what my money story
- 9:46was because I felt like I kind of had a little bit of a taste
- 9:48of both, to be honest. So growing up, I thought about,
- 9:52OK, well, how do I know to create abundance for myself?
- 9:55How do I know how to do this for me?
- 9:58And again, the upbringing that I had from both my parents and
- 10:01even my grandparents was the fact that you had to get a good
- 10:03education so you could get a good job, so you could get a
- 10:05good career and support your family.
- 10:08And so that's what I was, OK, that's what I got to do.
- 10:10So my entire upbringing was around school.
- 10:12Well, Fast forward, I was, you know, going into grade 8 and I
- 10:16was really struggling in school in elementary.
- 10:18And we couldn't quite figure out originally what that was.
- 10:21And so my mom kind of stepped in and had said to one of the
- 10:24teachers and said, listen, I think we should get her tested.
- 10:26Something's not right here about the way that she's applying
- 10:29herself, the way that she's presenting in school.
- 10:32And so because of that, I did and I went and I got tested at
- 10:35like a center basically. And Long story short, I found
- 10:38out that I had a learning disability in grade A.
- 10:40And basically what that meant in summary was the fact I was not
- 10:44going to crush when it came to numbers and math, which is so
- 10:48interesting because now obviously I'm a dotted nerd in
- 10:50my business. So that's also been interesting
- 10:52to kind of overcome and rewrite. And the other part that was a
- 10:55huge piece of it was the fact that I was somebody who was not
- 10:59very much like an auditory processor.
- 11:02Meaning when you just speak to me for 2-3 hours, I don't take
- 11:06in a lot of information. But if you, for example, give me
- 11:09a visual or you give me something that's like a
- 11:11framework or a summary or structure, I can instantly
- 11:15digest that. So it really started to show me
- 11:19I was going to struggle in school like they as soon as I
- 11:21got this, you know, label, if you will, of having learning
- 11:24disability, I was like, Oh my God, like, what does this mean
- 11:27for me? Does this mean that I won't go
- 11:28to school? Because again, that was my
- 11:30ticket to success, ticket to, you know, wealth and, and
- 11:33winning in life. And so if I couldn't get into
- 11:35school, what the heck was going to happen?
- 11:37So my mom was like, don't worry, we're going to go into high
- 11:39school and we're going to kind of get you set up.
- 11:42Now that we have this awareness, we are going to go into high
- 11:45school with us awareness and we're going to, you know,
- 11:47support you. So Fast forward, I go to high
- 11:49school and I remember sitting down with one of the, the
- 11:52guidance counselors who was kind of like counseling on us on, you
- 11:55know, what would next steps look like?
- 11:57And it was interesting because they had said to me, you know,
- 11:59well, we don't need to take the higher level classes.
- 12:02We don't need to take, you know, the higher level credits.
- 12:04We'll just put her through the easier path because there's kind
- 12:07of two tiers in each class, like the harder and the easier.
- 12:10And so we'll put her through the easier route through school.
- 12:13And I remember my mom, who was an incredible advocate at that
- 12:15time and had basically said, no, absolutely not like we are going
- 12:19to put her through the exact same process as all the other
- 12:23kids, all the classes that they're going through and
- 12:25whatever she needs, if she needs a tutor, if she needs extra
- 12:27time, if she needs whatever, like we are going to find a way.
- 12:30Because the thing that was important was that if I had the
- 12:33quote UN quote lower level classes I physically could not
- 12:36get into, I wouldn't have what I need to get into a university or
- 12:39a college. So because of that, I basically
- 12:42had to go for the bigger classes because if I didn't, it meant
- 12:44that all the rest of the other options were going to be off the
- 12:46table in the future. So going into high school, it
- 12:51was, it was really hard. If I'm going to be honest with
- 12:53you, it's very difficult because I felt stupid.
- 12:55If I'm going to be honest, I felt like my brain was working
- 12:58against me. I felt like I couldn't
- 13:01understand and I was so frustrated why something that
- 13:03took somebody else 30 minutes took me 3 hours.
- 13:06Like it was beyond frustrating just trying to memorize
- 13:10textbooks and, you know, doing testing and writing essays for
- 13:14me. Like it was the worst.
- 13:16Like I just, I really hated it. And it was tough because you
- 13:21also get this label, which I, I now have a lot of awareness of.
- 13:25That label was also something that kind of made me reinforce
- 13:30it. And what I meant by that is I
- 13:31felt like I kind of removed certain options to be on the
- 13:34table for me because I had in my mind, well, oh, I have a
- 13:36learning disability. I have a learning disability.
- 13:38Like there was like this label that I had associated with or
- 13:41this like, I guess identity. And so because of that, I found
- 13:44myself also not really having a lot of belief in me, not having
- 13:47a lot of confidence in myself because other people had told me
- 13:50that I shouldn't. Other people had told me that
- 13:52there probably wasn't a good likeliness that I was going to
- 13:55succeed in the educational way or an education based setting.
- 13:58And so I remember getting through school with these tutors
- 14:02and like really struggling. But I did get through it.
- 14:04And I remember graduating high school and I remember feeling
- 14:07just like, OK, like I did this. It was super, super hard, but I
- 14:10did it. And now I felt what the heck do
- 14:13I do now? Because I didn't personally
- 14:15think that I was going to get into any schools.
- 14:17And then I did and I got into universities.
- 14:19And I remember I got into a school that was nearby to me
- 14:23here and I thought, OK, this is amazing.
- 14:25I'm going to go to school and I'm going to go get a business
- 14:28degree because I was going to get my business money.
- 14:30So I'm going to go get a business degree.
- 14:32Well, I go and I go to the first year of university or some
- 14:35people in the states call it college.
- 14:36I go to the first year of university and I instantly was
- 14:41like, I am in the deep end here mentally because again, we are
- 14:45back into textbooks, we're back into numbers, which I'm not good
- 14:48at at the time. And I was back into, you know,
- 14:51comprehension of auditory and reading, which again was
- 14:54difficult for me. And so here I am the setting and
- 14:57I remember it vividly. I had a test in a business class
- 15:01and half of the test like smacked up in the middle was
- 15:04creative strategy. It was marketing strategy,
- 15:06brands. Like it was all these things
- 15:08that were really creative in nature around business.
- 15:11And then I had the other side of it, which was like economics and
- 15:14equations and all of that. And I was, I was doing the test
- 15:17around this. And I remember that the Prof
- 15:20came out to me, the professor and had said, listen, you
- 15:24literally got 50% on this test. Every single part of the
- 15:27creative side, like the marketing, the brand, anything
- 15:29that was really, you know, in the creative bucket you got 100%
- 15:32on, but you didn't get any of the math basically.
- 15:36So what I remember this happening, I kind of have this
- 15:39light bulb moment and I was like, OK, so I got perfect on
- 15:42this one side of my brain that really does work and that I feel
- 15:45like I have a good skill and a good awareness at.
- 15:48But this other side that was math I suck at.
- 15:51And so here I am knowing that if I want to get a business degree,
- 15:54I'm going to have to do all these economic and finance
- 15:56courses and I know I'm going to tank them.
- 15:59So I had a really hard time at university because again, I felt
- 16:02like I was trying to fit myself into this system, into the
- 16:06structure that I didn't feel supported.
- 16:09And so I basically remember calling my my family and saying,
- 16:13like, I cannot do this. Like this is not for me.
- 16:16I'm not thriving here. I don't have a future in this
- 16:18program and I need to come home. And so I did.
- 16:22And so I came home. And so I remember I had no idea
- 16:25what I was going to do. And I remember my mom again,
- 16:28going back to my program and my upbringing, she had said, you
- 16:31know, you got to go to school for something.
- 16:32You have to get a degree, You have to get a credential in
- 16:34something. So I said, OK, fine.
- 16:37So I said, OK, I got back to what do I want to do with my
- 16:40life? And remember, like, at this
- 16:41time, I'm pretty young. Like, I don't know what I want
- 16:43to do with my life, which is its own conversation.
- 16:45But I think it's mind boggling that we're expecting people at
- 16:48such a young age to know what they want to do for the rest of
- 16:51their life. And even as I finished today's
- 16:52story, you're going to start to see how it all comes together.
- 16:56But I would have never known because I hadn't tried anything.
- 16:59So if we haven't tried anything, how could I possibly know what I
- 17:02want to do? Like it's just, it's all theory.
- 17:03It blows my mind. So I go home and I say to my
- 17:08mom, I feel lost. I remember crying in my bedroom
- 17:11because I just felt, I felt so stupid.
- 17:13I felt so lost. I felt so isolated because I was
- 17:17like, I feel like I don't learn the way other people do.
- 17:19I don't have the skills that they have.
- 17:20And I just feel like here I am. What the heck is going to be my
- 17:23future? And I remember her just asking
- 17:26me like, what do you want to do? What are some of the things that
- 17:27you would love to do? Like what do you what do you
- 17:29enjoy? And I just, I just want to help
- 17:30people. Like I literally just want to
- 17:32help people. That's it.
- 17:33I want to be in a helping profession.
- 17:35I want to be, you know, whether it's nursing or if it's social
- 17:39work or whatever. But when I started to think
- 17:41about all the different things that would be required of me,
- 17:43like say I wanted to become a doctor, Well, guess what, girl,
- 17:46you're going to have to learn some science and you're going to
- 17:47have to learn some pretty intense math for medications and
- 17:50chemistry and all these things. So I, I really was removing
- 17:53certain things off the table because I thought I was like, I
- 17:56don't have the education, I don't have the understanding of
- 17:59this. So I sat there and I said, OK,
- 18:03social work. That's what I'm going to do.
- 18:05I'm going to go and I'm going to lean into going into social
- 18:08work. And so I joined a social work
- 18:10program and I got into that and I started going to school for
- 18:13social work. I fell in love with this
- 18:17program. I loved the idea of like, they
- 18:21teach you how to ask people questions, how to get people to
- 18:24be able to open up. How do you get people to feel
- 18:26safe? What are the different types of
- 18:28ways that you can work in social work?
- 18:30And as part of the social work program that I was in, we also
- 18:33had an internship. And so the internship that I
- 18:35took was actually at a domestic violence shelter in my local
- 18:38area here. And that that experience opened
- 18:43my eyes in a way to just so many things.
- 18:46Like it would be hard to explain it all in one moment.
- 18:48But doing that program changed a lot for me because it made me
- 18:53realize several things. It made me realize #1 social
- 18:56workers are the hardest working people.
- 18:59Like they really bust their butt to serve and help people every
- 19:02single day in a way that does not get acknowledged or seen or
- 19:06appreciated nearly enough to. They do not get nearly the
- 19:09compensation they deserve for that work and for the effort and
- 19:12the time and the care and the love that they put into the
- 19:15people they serve. Three, it is an underfunded from
- 19:18the government. It is an underfunded area of
- 19:21support. And so it means that even though
- 19:23the people who are on the front lines helping people, for
- 19:26example, the people who are working with the domestic
- 19:28violence victims are really wanting to help and to support
- 19:32and to guide in a certain way. They don't have resources to do
- 19:36a lot of the things that they would want to do for them
- 19:38because of funding. And I also saw, you know, in
- 19:42that internship I was in front of and I was witness to a lot of
- 19:47really, really difficult situations, a lot of really
- 19:52vulnerable shares from women who were leaving domestic violence
- 19:56in their homes or with their children.
- 19:58This was also, by the way, a Center for women and their
- 20:00children. This was not just women.
- 20:02This was for women as well as the kids.
- 20:04And so there was kids that were there from two months old all
- 20:07the way up to 12. And so this experience.
- 20:11Showed me as well the impact of women having resources and women
- 20:15having access to money, women having access to choices and to
- 20:19options and to certain levels of independence.
- 20:23And also what not having finances or not having
- 20:26independence OR not having those resources can do to a woman
- 20:30navigating a situation like this or just to any woman in general.
- 20:34And so that experience taught me so much.
- 20:37It taught me how to talk to people.
- 20:39It taught me how to validate feelings.
- 20:40It taught me how to unpack with questioning.
- 20:42It taught me how so many things that wasn't more on the career
- 20:45side. And it also taught me personally
- 20:46like what women need, which is women need options and women
- 20:49need resources. And so here I am.
- 20:52And I remember I, I, I was really loving it.
- 20:55And I thought, OK, maybe this is what I'm going to do.
- 20:57This is what I'm going to do. And I remember I had one
- 20:59specific person and I, I had gone in and I was kind of the
- 21:03person who when someone came in as a new client basically within
- 21:07that house, because it really was like a lockdown facility for
- 21:11safety. When someone new came in, I was
- 21:14to kind of triage. I sat in basically on triaging.
- 21:17Their reason that they were there.
- 21:19Someone shared something so awful and traumatic and graphic
- 21:28in a way that I cannot even explain, and in that moment I
- 21:35truthfully was traumatized. Initially.
- 21:39I remember after that conversation, because of the
- 21:42graphics of what was shared and the state in which they came in
- 21:46and what I was basically witnessing, I was literally
- 21:49mentally traumatized from that experience.
- 21:52And I took some time off of my internship and I sat there and I
- 22:00wondered, can I go back? Because seeing what was
- 22:05happening to women in areas where I live, which are
- 22:10considered to be, you know, well off areas.
- 22:14And then in the backyard of these well off areas, women are
- 22:17being treated this way. I was so sad.
- 22:20But I was so pissed because I thought this cannot happen.
- 22:24Like this cannot happen anymore. And the only way to fix this is
- 22:31to have money to help to get women independent and free.
- 22:38And so I took space from that program.
- 22:40I graduated, I took space from that program.
- 22:42And I thought, is this for me, like is, is this the place where
- 22:46I'm going to create the most change?
- 22:47Is this me being in the front lines?
- 22:49Like, is this where I make the most change?
- 22:51Because I thought, I don't, I'm not going to have enough money
- 22:53to do anything because of what these specific roles get
- 22:56compensated. The funding isn't there from the
- 22:59government. And so it felt like I could see
- 23:01all these things that need to be done, but I had no resources to
- 23:03create any massive change other than the one to one capacity.
- 23:06And so that started to mess with my mind.
- 23:09And so again, I come back to this drawing board of like, what
- 23:12am I going to do with my life? Like I, I felt so inspired in
- 23:15this time in my life, but I also felt so overwhelmed.
- 23:19And so I thought, I am taking a break of trying to quote UN
- 23:22quote, find myself. Like I am taking a break off of
- 23:25trying to decide what my career is going to be and who I'm going
- 23:28to be, what my salary is going to be.
- 23:29Because again, I always have that five step plan in my head
- 23:31of like, get a degree, get a job, like all that, you know,
- 23:34white picket fence plan was always this pressure in my head
- 23:37and I released that and I said, screw it.
- 23:40I am going to ditch that plan for a very small season and I'm
- 23:43going to try to figure out what the hell do I want to do for me.
- 23:46Like what do what do I feel activated by and just find
- 23:49myself not find my career. I want to find myself.
- 23:52And with that, maybe I will then find my career.
- 23:54So I released all expectations and I remember saying to one of
- 23:57my girlfriends, I felt super, super lost.
- 23:59And I said, you know, I need to make some money because I can't
- 24:01obviously just be, you know, sitting here hoping and thinking
- 24:06about what I want to do. Like I need to make some
- 24:07progress in the meantime. She was a Hostess, the person
- 24:10who seats you at restaurants. She was a Hostess at a
- 24:12restaurant in the airport here, Toronto Pearson Airport in
- 24:16Toronto. And she was working at a
- 24:18celebrity chef restaurant. And she said, why don't you come
- 24:20apply to be a server here? And I had served and done
- 24:23serving in the summers and stuff in between school.
- 24:26It was always kind of like my summer job at different places.
- 24:29And so she said, why don't you come apply to be a server here?
- 24:32So I said, OK, so I did the interview and I got the job.
- 24:34And so I started working as a server at the airport.
- 24:37And so that was really, really incredible for various reasons.
- 24:40You know, I obviously worked with really amazing people.
- 24:42I loved the people that I worked with and I was able to interact
- 24:45with a lot of different people who are coming and going at that
- 24:47restaurant. I met my partner at the time who
- 24:50I was with for a very long time at that restaurant.
- 24:52And so I have a lot of really good memories of that time.
- 24:56But again, I went into serving and I was making money and I was
- 25:00like, OK, don't focus on career, find yourself.
- 25:02So what I did is I ended up going and traveling with my
- 25:05partner at the time and we traveled, you know, Europe and
- 25:08all over and we were traveling constantly.
- 25:11And I was just really making money and I was working out and
- 25:15I was traveling and I was kind of just using this as a time to
- 25:18like be basically with myself. But the thing that, you know,
- 25:21after traveling, for example, Australia and Europe and all
- 25:24these amazing places, you still come home.
- 25:26Like you come home and you still, and this is something
- 25:29I've learned the hard way. You're still with yourself.
- 25:32Like no matter how much you travel, no matter how much you
- 25:34try to distract yourself with all these other things, if you
- 25:36do not feel at home within yourself, you will always have
- 25:40this disconnect. And so I would go and travel and
- 25:42I'd feel these little moments of relief.
- 25:43I'd feel these, you know, maybe even 3 weeks or a month of
- 25:46relief, but I'd still come home and I'd go back to work.
- 25:49And I started to think like, is this going to be my forever?
- 25:53Like, is this a season or is this my forever?
- 25:55And honestly, for a moment, I contemplated allowing serving to
- 25:58be my forever. It was making me decent money.
- 26:01I, you know, had not really a lot of responsibility outside
- 26:04work. You kind of clock out and you
- 26:05don't have to mentally think about it until you go back to
- 26:07the next day. And so there was a lot of pluses
- 26:10to being within that. But I just again, kind of felt
- 26:13this itch that I wasn't creating change in any way.
- 26:15I wasn't creating a legacy. I wasn't creating an impact on
- 26:19the world. I wasn't really necessarily
- 26:20creating any domino. And I don't think I want to
- 26:23preface that. I don't think everyone has to do
- 26:25that. Like if you don't feel called to
- 26:27create an impact on the world or called to create a legacy, I
- 26:30don't think there's anything wrong with being a server as
- 26:33your career. Like I don't necessarily think
- 26:35that if in your heart, let's just say you're like, I want to
- 26:38be a server because I have a lot of other things I do outside of
- 26:40work that are like my heart and my passion and my purpose in
- 26:43life, then like live your life like I don't care.
- 26:45I don't think everyone has to have a business and I don't
- 26:48think everyone has to, you know, be like, what's the legacy I'm
- 26:51leaving on this world? Like I don't think everyone has
- 26:53to do that. But for me, I had an itch that I
- 26:58wanted to do something bigger and I just couldn't figure out
- 27:01what it was. And so I remember I was on
- 27:04Instagram scrolling in the back while being a server and I
- 27:08remember that I had seen someone that I was following actually,
- 27:12and she was going to a conference in Toronto.
- 27:14And so she, it was like a business conference for fitness
- 27:16professionals at the time more than I am now.
- 27:19But at this time I was working out all the time and I was
- 27:22pretty fit. And so my partner that I was
- 27:24with was very into fitness and kind of got me into fitness at
- 27:26the time. And so because of that, we were
- 27:28working out together. We were really into it.
- 27:30And so we're like, we're going to go to this conference.
- 27:32And so the two of us go to this conference.
- 27:33And I remember sitting in this room and I just felt like a
- 27:39total fish out of water. I was like severe imposter
- 27:41syndrome. Like I was like, this is this is
- 27:44not my kind of people. People were talking about making
- 27:46$50,000 a month, $100,000 a month, $200,000 a month using
- 27:50the Internet. And I'm like, because I'm like,
- 27:53I just again, I thought that $100,000 a year or like $200,000
- 27:57a year was like, you made it, right?
- 28:00Like that's we're talking if you're making six figures plus,
- 28:02like you're good. And I also again, still think
- 28:05that, you know, maybe with today's current living expenses,
- 28:08it's not as much as it used to be, but it still is a good
- 28:11salary. It's not to say that that isn't,
- 28:13but I had never entertained more than that.
- 28:15I had never entertained 100,000 a month.
- 28:18Like I was like, that's just not even something that I would have
- 28:19ever thought was on the table for me.
- 28:22And so when I went to this conference, it broke my brain
- 28:25because I was around people who all were normalizing these
- 28:28numbers. And I'm like, I would love that,
- 28:30but I have no idea how to tap into that.
- 28:31Again, I have no education in fitness.
- 28:34I'm not a trainer. I don't have a nutrition
- 28:36background. I had all these things that were
- 28:37like the certifications I need that I didn't have.
- 28:40And so I remember being at this conference and you know, the
- 28:43ticket was around $2500 to go, which was a decent amount at the
- 28:48time for me. Remember, like I'm on a server
- 28:50salary. So $2500 a month was actually
- 28:52like the equivalent of my rent at the time.
- 28:54So because of that, I felt really uncomfortable.
- 28:58I felt really like, Oh my gosh, that's a lot of money.
- 29:01And so because of that, I kind of splurged with my partner and
- 29:05we got a seat and we went and we took lots and lots of notes.
- 29:08And at the end of it, we got an offer which they always make it
- 29:11masterminds and they say, you know, if you want to join our
- 29:13program, then you know, you can do this for $20,000 for the
- 29:17year. I think it was Canadian.
- 29:19And it will give you coaching on how to start your business.
- 29:21Well, let's just take a second. It was $2500 for me to go to
- 29:25this event, let alone sign a $20,000 contract.
- 29:29And so with my partner, I remember they, they pitched this
- 29:32and both of us felt so-called to do it.
- 29:34But we also were there like, Oh my God, like $20,000, Like we
- 29:38don't have that. We don't have $20,000 to spend
- 29:41on this. And so I remember we went in the
- 29:43hall, we were talking to the guy who ran the program.
- 29:46And I remember saying, like, listen, I so believe what you're
- 29:49doing here. And I so love it.
- 29:50But like, we do not have this money.
- 29:52And he coached me in such a way where he basically said, listen,
- 29:58entrepreneurs, they don't find excuses.
- 30:00They find a way to make it happen.
- 30:01And so it's obviously up to you. You're going to do whatever
- 30:04you're comfortable with. But if you want to have this
- 30:06life, you're going to need to have a massive pattern interrupt
- 30:09to the way that you're doing things.
- 30:10Because if you're waiting for the day that you have all the
- 30:12money sitting in a bank account, I can tell you right now that
- 30:14day is not coming. And that was like a whoa moment.
- 30:18And so I remember we were like, how are we going to do this?
- 30:22And my partner at the time, and I will say, I want to preface, I
- 30:26would not be where I am today without his emotional, mental
- 30:33overall support because he believed in me at the beginning
- 30:38in a way when I didn't believe in myself.
- 30:40And so when we first started the idea of entertaining this, I
- 30:44remember we were in the hall and I remember this conversation
- 30:46vividly. We started and we said, OK,
- 30:48well, what's the average payment?
- 30:50And it was like, you know, 2000 or something, dollars a month.
- 30:52And again, our rent together was that same equivalent.
- 30:54We're like, we don't have this. So at the time we were like, OK,
- 30:58he had a condo that he owned and he said if we're going to do
- 31:02this, like I'll sell my condo and we'll use some of that money
- 31:06towards starting the business. And I was so overwhelmed by that
- 31:12comment because I was like so excited.
- 31:14Obviously the opportunity is starting this business, but I
- 31:17also felt so conflicted because here's like a man trying to help
- 31:21me, which felt uncomfortable for me.
- 31:23Again, being raised by a single mom.
- 31:25I was always told like, do it on your own, do it on your own.
- 31:27Like don't take help basically, like you don't necessarily have
- 31:30to, you know, have a man help you like you should try to do it
- 31:32on your own. And so I was also conflicted
- 31:35getting his help because I thought like, I don't want to be
- 31:37in debt to him because we were not married like me, you know,
- 31:40we had this was just somebody I was dating who's my boyfriend
- 31:42for a while. And so he said I'll sell my
- 31:44condo. So he did.
- 31:46And you know, he got his condo stage and he sold it.
- 31:49And so he liquidated the funds from that and took some of that
- 31:53to which was to the tune of around probably I'd say like
- 31:56$15,000 towards starting this business.
- 32:00And at the time when we said yes to this mastermind and when we
- 32:05had been selling his house, nobody understood what was going
- 32:07on because they were like, you have a property that could be
- 32:10building you equity and you're selling it.
- 32:13Why? And we're like, oh, we're just
- 32:14gonna travel and like, we're just gonna like live free.
- 32:16We didn't want to tell anybody because we didn't necessarily
- 32:19believe in our vision yet. We didn't necessarily believe
- 32:22that, like, what was gonna happen from this?
- 32:24We just, you know, we thought that this could be something
- 32:27amazing, but we didn't know for certain that we didn't have a
- 32:291000% confidence in it. So we tried to really keep it as
- 32:32much between us as possible. And so I remember for that
- 32:37period of time, because we sold his place, we ended up moving in
- 32:41with my mom. So it was me, him and our dog
- 32:43together that moved in with my mom.
- 32:47And I remember there were nights where it was literally me and
- 32:50him and our dog in a single bed at my mom's house.
- 32:53Eventually we upgraded to a queen.
- 32:55But I remember at the beginning, it was the two of us and the dog
- 32:59in the single bed. And what I'll say is that moment
- 33:06of him supporting me changed my whole life because, yes, I paid
- 33:12him back the money. And, you know, all of that ended
- 33:14up being, you know, squared away.
- 33:16So it wasn't like, you know, I kind of took and ran, but it was
- 33:19more just having someone in that moment.
- 33:23One of the qualities about him in general that I really
- 33:25appreciated was the fact that he really charged his own path and
- 33:29he didn't care a lot what other people thought.
- 33:31And so when he supported me at the beginning to say go for
- 33:34this, I didn't believe in myself, but he believed in me.
- 33:37And so we were like, OK, great, like 321 go.
- 33:40And so we originally considered making a combo brand, like a
- 33:43couple brand, but we had been told it's one of the hardest
- 33:46things to do. And so it's really better if one
- 33:48of us is the brand, the other one kind of works behind the
- 33:50scenes. And so that's what we decided at
- 33:52the beginning. OK, so I want to take a quick
- 33:54little brief interruption from today's episode to let you know
- 33:57about something really exciting. And I want to 1st preface, there
- 34:00is nothing here that I have to sell you.
- 34:01This is about something that is entirely free that I think would
- 34:04be a massive support for you if you are someone who's loving all
- 34:08things Ambitious podcast. So we have created an absolutely
- 34:12incredible community that is called the Ambitious Network.
- 34:15This is really a place where coaching and masterminds meet
- 34:18high level networking of other women who were just like you.
- 34:21So a little bit of what you can anticipate, this is a place for
- 34:24you to grow, to connect, and ultimately to get the support
- 34:26that you need to elevate your business.
- 34:28And so some of the things you can anticipate inside #1 live
- 34:31Hot Seat Coaching. This is literally live coaching
- 34:34in the way that I would do inside of our masterminds, our
- 34:36different offers only inside of this community, entirely free.
- 34:40You'll also get the opportunity to get access to exclusive
- 34:42giveaways that are not available anywhere else.
- 34:44So these are things like giveaways of different books and
- 34:47resources that I'm obsessed with that have really helped me in my
- 34:50journey of business, but also things on a larger scale, like
- 34:53some of which have been six months of private coaching type
- 34:57of giveaways. So all of this to be said,
- 34:59massive, massive amount of resources being given inside and
- 35:02also trainings and resources, tools of frameworks and
- 35:06downloads and worksheets and master classes that are going to
- 35:09be things that will really help to take you and your business to
- 35:12the next level. Now, it's also not just about
- 35:14me. I have an incredible network and
- 35:16a community of other entrepreneurs who also want to
- 35:18give back to you if you've loved their interviews and their
- 35:21discussions on the Ambitious podcast.
- 35:23So we have guests that are also providing resources in the
- 35:26community that will only be available inside the ambitious
- 35:28network. But there's also the networking
- 35:30aspect. And this is a place for you to
- 35:32not Only Connect with other women about what's going on in
- 35:35your business, what's currently working or not working in
- 35:37today's current market. It's a place to share wins, but
- 35:40it's also a place to connect with me and get my feedback and
- 35:43support for you and your business.
- 35:45Now all of that to be said, this is a, as I said, mastermind
- 35:49meets networking. And I really have created this
- 35:52as a community that I want to be something you've never gotten
- 35:55anywhere else. It's not this low ticket
- 35:57membership that you feel like you're paying for.
- 35:59You know, this graveyard of resources that the person has
- 36:02they don't know what to do with. And it's also not that Facebook
- 36:04group that you're inside of that you feel like you get tons of
- 36:07notifications, but you don't really want anything that's
- 36:09inside of it. It all feels surface level.
- 36:11We want to give you the ability to have mastermind meets high
- 36:14level networking all in one place.
- 36:16And the ambitious network is where you're going to find that.
- 36:18So how you can get inside? If you want to go to the show
- 36:21notes beneath, you can click a link to join join us inside the
- 36:24ambitious network. And if you also want to connect
- 36:26with me on Instagram, I'm also happy to chat with you about it.
- 36:29So if you DM me the word ambitious, we'll be sure to chat
- 36:31a little bit more about the network for you and give you the
- 36:34link to get inside. So all of that to be said, I
- 36:36don't want to take any more time away from today's episode.
- 36:39So without further ado, let's get back into the show.
- 36:41So we got started with this fitness business and we're
- 36:43making programs for people. We're selling coaching.
- 36:46And again, like I, I'm the brand of this, but we were all about
- 36:50helping women to lose weight. And so that was kind of going to
- 36:52be the big promise. We're in this mastermind.
- 36:54We're starting to sell programs. I took my personal Instagram and
- 36:56I made that into my fitness account.
- 36:58I was creating freebies, I was making recipe guides.
- 37:01I was doing anything and everything that I possibly could
- 37:04to sign people as clients into this.
- 37:06All the while starting to try to get my personal training
- 37:09certification so that I had some aspects of certifications to be
- 37:12making these programs. Until that point, I had been
- 37:15making programs off the same approach or methodology that I
- 37:18had used to get fit. And so I'm leaning into this and
- 37:21I'm doing this for a little while and we started to sign
- 37:23some clients and we started to make, you know, some money
- 37:25within making these programs and supporting people in coaching.
- 37:29But I also felt like I was not, I'm not someone who's always
- 37:32been into sports my whole life or anything.
- 37:34I'm not someone who's even been into fitness my whole life.
- 37:37I am very much like a brownies and wine kind of girl.
- 37:40So because of that, like I felt like I didn't fit the part of
- 37:43the fitness influencer or like the fitness brands that people
- 37:46would assume that I would be. And also I didn't care enough
- 37:50about what I was teaching. I wasn't so passionate about
- 37:53fitness and macros and workout plans to the level that some
- 37:58other people were. And so I felt kind of like a
- 38:00fraud continuing within that because I thought like, is this
- 38:03really what I care about or am I just doing this because it makes
- 38:05money? The thing that I did enjoy was
- 38:08building a business. I did enjoy the marketing.
- 38:11Again, back to the school brain. I enjoyed the marketing.
- 38:14I enjoyed the sales calls, which was back to my social work side
- 38:17of helping people to open up and targeted questioning and all of
- 38:20that. And so I liked the integration
- 38:23of my social work stuff in sales.
- 38:24I liked the integration of what I learned in school in the
- 38:26marketing and branding stuff that I was doing.
- 38:28But I didn't like what I was actually building as a business,
- 38:31which was fitness. So I remember thinking to
- 38:33myself, OK, what if I moved into the business space?
- 38:35But I thought, who the hell is going to trust me in the
- 38:37business space? So I thought, never mind, I'm
- 38:39not going to do that. I'll put out a freebie and I'll
- 38:41just see how many bytes I get. Like put up this freebie.
- 38:44All about learning how to sell. And I basically said, here's how
- 38:47I've been selling thus far. And this is my insight to you if
- 38:50you're someone who's wanting to sell.
- 38:51Well, my mentor who I'd been the mastermind of had downloaded
- 38:55that and had said to me, hey, I'd love to get on a call with
- 38:58you. Can we chat?
- 39:00I said absolutely. And so he had asked would I come
- 39:02in as a Co coach inside of his program to help other people who
- 39:07were looking to get their fitness businesses started.
- 39:10And so I said, 100%, yeah. So I came in as a Co coach
- 39:14underneath him and I started to kind of coach alongside him
- 39:16inside of one of his beginner programs.
- 39:19And so I really loved that because I loved, you know, the
- 39:21idea of being able to again, help people.
- 39:23I loved that I got to teach and talk about business.
- 39:25I loved that I was just in the business world, in the
- 39:28ecosystem. And I'm very grateful to him for
- 39:30having taken that chance on me because if he hadn't again, I
- 39:34probably would have never, you know, necessarily gone into that
- 39:39space of business coaching. So I was a Co coach for him and
- 39:42I remember being inside of his business.
- 39:43He had asked me, you know, do you want to hop on some sales
- 39:47calls because we have some openings for some sales calls.
- 39:49You want to give it a go? And let's just keep in mind, up
- 39:52until this point, the most sales that I had really done formally
- 39:55training wise was like selling in a restaurant, like upselling
- 39:58people on things on the menu. It wasn't really, you know,
- 40:01something I would say that I've necessarily had a ton of
- 40:03practice in, but I was like, yeah, sure, I can give it a go.
- 40:06So I hop on these calls and I am loving these sales calls.
- 40:10The packages at the time were around anywhere between like 10
- 40:13to $20,000 for coaching. And so I was selling people who
- 40:18would call on these packages and so I would run them through, you
- 40:21know, this process and, and talk to them about how the program
- 40:24could help them. I was selling them into his
- 40:26program. And so I really loved that.
- 40:28I really, really did. And obviously, you know, being a
- 40:30high ticket closer, I started to see because I was on Commission,
- 40:33the growth potential that was underneath that and what could
- 40:36be and what could come of it. And so because of that, I
- 40:39started to say, OK, well, maybe there's something here for me.
- 40:41Maybe there's something in this area of sales for me, but at the
- 40:45time I was selling his transformation and his coaching,
- 40:49and I felt like some of it was like I kind of sold them into a
- 40:51program, but I wouldn't be part of their experience after that.
- 40:54I loved telling them what we could do for them, but I also
- 40:57wasn't going to be the one who's actually helping it to come
- 40:59true. So because of that, there felt
- 41:00like there was like this disconnect where I was kind of
- 41:04like, here, you should join us, but I'm not actually going to
- 41:06see you after this point. So it felt like there was like a
- 41:08disconnect or something for me. And so I remember sitting there
- 41:10thinking, OK, well, like, is this it?
- 41:12Like, is this what I, I should be again doing?
- 41:14You'll see here I'm kind of questioning my life at every
- 41:17stage, but I really am a very self aware person.
- 41:20And I'm because of that. I'm, I'm always an evaluation.
- 41:22I'm, am I hitting my potential? Am I getting to the level of
- 41:25what I know is, is possible within me?
- 41:28And so I had said to him, I'm going to go to some conferences,
- 41:30I'm going to go to some different events, and I'm going
- 41:33to see, you know, what kind of hits for me.
- 41:35So he's like, OK, so I went to one.
- 41:37And the first one that I went to was a women's conference.
- 41:41And I stayed at this house with a bunch of different women.
- 41:43And in this house, they were all different types of online
- 41:46businesses who I still know today, some of whom I've, you
- 41:48know, coached and I'm friends with and all of these different
- 41:51things. They ended up being a lot of
- 41:52great relationships and connections from there.
- 41:55And so I was in that house and at the time I didn't have my own
- 41:57business, right. So I was in that house.
- 42:00And because of that, I had said, you know, hey, if anyone has any
- 42:03sales questions, like I'm always happy to help.
- 42:05So in this house, I start coaching people like I'm on the
- 42:07couch, I'm outside on the patio. People are asking me questions
- 42:09about, you know, their, their application or their funnel or
- 42:12their calls. And so I started to just give
- 42:14them advice based off of what I knew to be true about my
- 42:17experience in sales. And I remember people had said
- 42:19to me, you know, can I pay for your time?
- 42:21And I'm like, no, no, no, I'm not a coach.
- 42:22I just, I'm a closer. They're like, oh, OK, so they've
- 42:26been asking to compensate me. And he said, it's too bad you
- 42:28don't have a program because if you did, like, I would buy that.
- 42:30I would love to learn all of this.
- 42:31And I was like, OK, so I, I'm on this, you know, flight home and
- 42:37I I come home after the trip and I'm really jazzed up, as you
- 42:39always are after a conference. And I start to have this
- 42:42awareness of like, huh, maybe I should have a program.
- 42:45Maybe I should coach. But I'm like, I'm really
- 42:47grateful to be inside this other business.
- 42:48Like, is this the time? Is this the moment?
- 42:50I don't know. And so I was like, I'm going to
- 42:52leave that and I go to another conference and I go to another
- 42:55conference out of California and I met my coach who was going to
- 42:59then after that point be my coach for like 5 years.
- 43:03Like he was a big part of my journey.
- 43:05And I went to his conference and we went around and he taught me
- 43:10a lot of sales. So he came into the guy that I
- 43:11was working for. He came in as a trainer to train
- 43:14us on sales. And so when he had an event, I
- 43:16told the team I was like, I'm going to go to his event and I'm
- 43:19going to go learn as much as I can.
- 43:21I'm going to bring it back to the team.
- 43:22So when I went to his event, he said to me something really
- 43:24specific. And he said, are you here for
- 43:28you or are you here for him? And I was like, what?
- 43:33Because I was like, I bought my ticket to go to this event.
- 43:35But he's like, yeah, but are you here for you or are you here for
- 43:38him? And I'm like, for me.
- 43:43And he's like, OK, great. Then let's focus on you, your
- 43:46desires, your goals and your vision.
- 43:48So I go into this and I had originally gone and being like,
- 43:51I'm going to consume all this information and bring it back to
- 43:53the team. But then going through this
- 43:55experience at the, at his event, I realized I was like, wait a
- 43:58second, I want to be an entrepreneur.
- 44:00Like I want to be an entrepreneur and I, I have this
- 44:04and I've been ignoring this loud voice in me, which is like, I
- 44:06love sales, I love marketing, I love helping people, I love
- 44:09coaching. Like what am I doing?
- 44:11I literally could do this on my own.
- 44:13And so because of that, I was like, OK, how do I do this?
- 44:18So I contacted the girls that were at the other event and I
- 44:22said, listen, I'm going to run a 12 week program.
- 44:25I called it Sweetheart Sales Society and it was a 12 week
- 44:28program that was all designed for people who wanted to do
- 44:30sales and learn sales the way that I had had taught it at the
- 44:33house. And I had like 1012 women who
- 44:35signed up for that program as a result of what I coached them on
- 44:39in the house. And so once I saw that, I was
- 44:41like, I, I had people who got exposed my information and
- 44:44because of that, I offered them an offer which was 12 weeks,
- 44:47which was a very reasonable offer, 12 weeks for 997 and
- 44:51those women move forward and they join the program.
- 44:53I was like, Ding, Ding, Ding. This is supply and demand one O
- 44:561, which is the basis of business.
- 44:58Find a problem that people have and look to solve that problem.
- 45:01And so I was like, wait a second, I could literally do
- 45:04this. Like I could literally do this
- 45:06as my business. However, it's a direct
- 45:10competition and conflict with what I was doing, which was the
- 45:13fact that I was in a program of someone else's, in someone
- 45:16else's business coaching, but I wanted to coach my own.
- 45:18I was inside of someone else's business selling, but I was
- 45:21selling on my own. So because of that, I couldn't
- 45:23have my cake and eat it, eat it too.
- 45:25I kind of got to a place where I was like, I have to choose.
- 45:29Like I have to, I have to, I have to either lean in to what I
- 45:32want to do, which is my own thing, or I stay inside of this
- 45:34business. And I, it's really difficult
- 45:36decision for me because that business taught me so much like
- 45:39being an underneath that type of leadership style, being inside
- 45:43of sales there, being inside of coaching there, There were so
- 45:46many things that I didn't really even understand or could see as
- 45:51the true take away or what it did.
- 45:53And I'm so insanely grateful for that time because I wouldn't be
- 46:00the entrepreneur that I am today without having seen inside of
- 46:04that machine. But I think if I had stayed, I
- 46:07would have always wondered if I could do it on my own.
- 46:10I would have always wondered if I could have had success for me
- 46:13versus someone else's vision. And I think I part of me didn't
- 46:17know if I could do it as a woman.
- 46:18And I know that sounds bad. By the time I didn't have
- 46:21confidence in myself, I didn't have, you know, like, can I make
- 46:25100 KA month? Like I like I was going to be
- 46:28happy to make 10 KA month. I was like, give me 10 KA month.
- 46:30I'm happy. I'm chilling, like I don't need
- 46:33anything else. But thinking about the idea of
- 46:35like, I just generated 10 KA month off my first program that
- 46:39I ever launched. Can I do more than this?
- 46:41Like if I lean in, can I, can I really make this a thing?
- 46:44And leaving his business was a very difficult decision.
- 46:50But once I decided I was doing it, I went all in.
- 46:53And what I mean by that is like, I went from zero to 100.
- 46:57I was going live every single day.
- 46:59I was, you know, coaching people for free to build community and
- 47:03to build networking connection. I, you know, was doing
- 47:05one-on-one coaching at that time, which I think was probably
- 47:08about like $9000 for three months of coaching with me
- 47:10one-on-one, which is much, much more today.
- 47:13So don't use that as an anchor if you're, if you're thinking
- 47:15private coaching. But it, it was something that I,
- 47:18I really, I leaned in and I, I thought, OK, like, how do I just
- 47:22make this a thing? And all I knew was like, you got
- 47:24to work your ass off. So I was making freebies, I was
- 47:27coaching everyday on lives. I was posting non-stop on social
- 47:30media. I anything and everything that I
- 47:32thought could work, I was doing it because I was like, nothing
- 47:35here can be harmful. It's all an opportunity of just
- 47:38more, more and more. More people to see me means more
- 47:40people know I exist, which means more people can get nurtured by
- 47:43me, which means more customers. So I leaned in and at that time,
- 47:48I will tell you I was busting my ass like, and what I mean by
- 47:52that is I was up at six O clock in the morning and I was
- 47:54probably going to bed at 2:00 AM.
- 47:55Like I was not really the way that I and I tell people it's
- 47:59transparently now, the way that I built my business coaching for
- 48:02the first year was not sustainable by any means.
- 48:05It's not how you scale, but it was a, it was a level of hustle
- 48:08and grit that I had to do because I needed to prove to
- 48:11myself that I could do it and I would not take no for an answer.
- 48:16I had a lot of one-on-one clients to start.
- 48:18That's how I started the business coaching.
- 48:19So I had the sales program and then from a sales program, I
- 48:22realized I didn't want to just talk sales.
- 48:23So I moved into more general business coaching.
- 48:25But to stay in integrity, I only taught on things that I had
- 48:29either done myself or that I already learned through this
- 48:31other business. And so because of that and
- 48:34coaching them or myself, that's all I taught.
- 48:37So I never, for example, taught team until I actually myself had
- 48:40a team. I never taught anything
- 48:41financially or finance or profit and loss or strategy or anything
- 48:45around that until I already done it with my own finances.
- 48:48Because I, I'm a big believer that you should only speak from
- 48:50experience. You shouldn't speak from theory.
- 48:52And so for me, I don't even in my programs now I don't teach on
- 48:56things that I'm not an expert in just out of integrity.
- 48:58And So what I did is I tried to really lean in to increase my
- 49:02expertise as fast as possible, meaning insert or increase what
- 49:06I know to be able to then have more that I know to be able to
- 49:10offer more to people who wanted to work with me.
- 49:13And so the first year in business, I will paint you a
- 49:15picture. It was 6 O clock in the morning.
- 49:18I would get up, I would in my sweatpants on my laptop.
- 49:21I would go till 2 AMI would be busting my but I would go live.
- 49:25I would be posting on social media all those things and I
- 49:27would do that Monday to Saturday.
- 49:30Like sometimes I take Sundays off, but Monday to Saturday and
- 49:34you know, is it for everybody? No and also by the way, is that
- 49:38the way that you have to grow a business?
- 49:40No, like there's definitely different ways to grow a
- 49:42business outside of burning the candle at both ends and burning
- 49:45yourself out. But I think truthfully for me in
- 49:48the first, you know, 18 months of my business, which is how
- 49:51long it took me to hit 7 figures in revenue, truthfully, I, I
- 49:55just, I needed to hit that mark. There was something about that
- 49:58number. There was something about that
- 49:59mark to me that was so influential.
- 50:02And that was because I need to prove to myself.
- 50:05And on a much deeper level, I think I need to prove to my
- 50:09family and also like to myself in connection to my family that
- 50:12I don't need your millions of dollars.
- 50:14I can make my own million. And that moment when I hit the
- 50:21first seven figures of revenue, it was not triumphant at all.
- 50:25I was on the couch in my apartment that we were renting.
- 50:29And I remember I dry shampoo in my hair.
- 50:32I was in my sweatpants. I was heavily caffeinated.
- 50:35And I was on the couch and I'm like, I hit 7 figures.
- 50:39And I remember like that there was no, it was like this
- 50:44massive, you know, monumental day.
- 50:46It was just a day. It was just like a Tuesday.
- 50:49It was over Thursday and that broke my brain because I had
- 50:54been working so hard to generate this and so how I did it busted
- 51:01my butt on socials, one-on-one coach people until I was at full
- 51:04capacity. Then once I got my one-on-one
- 51:06filled, I created what is now today ITI accelerator.
- 51:09So it's been around for many, many years, which is our six
- 51:12month mastermind. I created the mastermind to
- 51:14scale and I told my private clients I was like, listen, I'm
- 51:16going to be running this program.
- 51:17You can shadow inside this program and I'm going to have
- 51:20new people inside this program that will be joining you.
- 51:22So we put all these women in this program and that was a six
- 51:24month program and I've been running that program ever since
- 51:27that day every six months. And so it's specifically
- 51:30designed for women who want to scale their businesses.
- 51:32And so yes, along the way, you know, I, I did add, you know,
- 51:35VIP days, which were in person intensives.
- 51:37I added master classes, which were low ticket things.
- 51:40I added these little things along the way.
- 51:41But really my bread and butter of my business has always been
- 51:44this mastermind as well as my private coaching that I do
- 51:47one-on-one. And so I hit this million and I
- 51:50have this like holy shit moment because I was like, holy crap, I
- 51:56hit this number, but holy crap, this is it.
- 51:59This is 7 figures. This is a 7 figure business.
- 52:03Like that's it. Like I, I was expecting.
- 52:05I don't know. I was like, I was like, where's
- 52:07the yachts? Where's the, where's the vibes?
- 52:09Where's the travel? Like I expected this other
- 52:12feeling. And it became such a humbling
- 52:14moment because it was at that moment that money and revenue
- 52:18was no longer my marker of success.
- 52:20It couldn't be because I had hit this thing that in my mind was
- 52:24going to make me feel a certain way.
- 52:25And I got there and I'm like, I don't feel any freaking
- 52:28different than I did last Tuesday when I hadn't hit seven
- 52:31figures. So in that moment, the 1st 18
- 52:34months in, I'm like, I'm going to need a bigger vision than
- 52:36numbers here because this number is not going to anchor me to get
- 52:39out of bed every day. Because if this is all it feels
- 52:41like, which you know, truthfully, you know, 7 figures
- 52:44is a lot of money. So I don't want to undermine
- 52:47that. But what I'm, I guess I'm trying
- 52:48to explain is I think many people, and I've seen this first
- 52:51hand in working in business coaching, so many of us believe
- 52:55that a certain number is going to change our whole life or a
- 52:57certain number means that we become some different person.
- 53:01And that really is only true if you allow it to be.
- 53:03It's also true with other numbers other than 7 figures,
- 53:06meaning I told him all the time, like you can have a half
- 53:09$1,000,000 a year business and not be at 7 figures a year, but
- 53:13have a very, very dialed lifestyle and have everything
- 53:15you've ever wanted, but you don't need $1,000,000 to do it.
- 53:18So I think we've been sold this idea, especially in the online
- 53:21space, that $1,000,000 means that you've made it.
- 53:25When truthfully, I know a lot of people who make $1,000,000 and
- 53:28more a year who are completely freaking miserable.
- 53:31And I also know a lot of people who their business is making
- 53:34$1,000,000, but they're making zilch out of that.
- 53:37They're potentially not even paying themselves or they have
- 53:39really low profit margins. And I also know people who've
- 53:42hit seven figures who, just like me that day, have decided since
- 53:45then to go back to being a smaller boutique business
- 53:47because they don't care. Like, the number didn't matter
- 53:50in the way they thought it would.
- 53:52So I got to this place and I was OK.
- 53:53Numbers can't be the defining factor.
- 53:55Now what? And so that's really when we
- 53:58start to build a true brand in my opinion, because I realized
- 54:01that I used to have a bigger mission than this number.
- 54:03It can't be about $1,000,000. It has to be about something
- 54:05bigger. And so again, I went back to my
- 54:09roots of like, what am I here to do?
- 54:11And I'm here to empower women. I'm here to put finances and
- 54:15money in the hands of women. I'm here to give women options.
- 54:18I'm here to give women resources.
- 54:20I'm here to teach them how to be empowered to do their own thing
- 54:23and maybe even potentially be the provider of their household.
- 54:26Like I'm here to put that level of power and wealth and
- 54:31resources into the hands of these women.
- 54:33And so I remember I started to do some research and I ended up
- 54:36on some site and it had said as a stat that less than 2% of
- 54:40female founded businesses ever surpass 7 figures a year in
- 54:44revenue compared to men. And listen, I know a lot of
- 54:50amazing entrepreneurs that are male.
- 54:52I know a lot of amazing men as entrepreneurs and founders.
- 54:56And this is no shade to the guys.
- 54:58It's not about, you know, US versus you.
- 55:00It's about the fact that that's not even close to balanced.
- 55:04That's not even close to fair. And there's so many reasons why
- 55:09that is and why I think women are 2% and it's not our fault.
- 55:16OK, so I'm going to explain this for just a couple seconds
- 55:19because this is really important.
- 55:20The reason, in my opinion, why that stat is potentially at that
- 55:26place. There's a couple influences that
- 55:27I think are causing this. Number one, I think women have
- 55:30been encouraged to go into the workplace, right?
- 55:34Women years ago were encouraged to make more money, to become a
- 55:37provider for the household, which needed to happen.
- 55:40Women needed to have more of a balancing and need that right to
- 55:43be able to do that. All they needed to do that, but
- 55:45they need a more right to be able to do that.
- 55:47And what happened, I felt, is that women were building these
- 55:52businesses, but the gender roles, meaning the typical
- 55:55traditional what women were supposed to do in the home
- 55:58didn't change. Women added on becoming CEOs and
- 56:01business owners, but still were needing to be potentially the
- 56:06sole, you know, homemaker at home, raise kids, you know, help
- 56:10and support their family, making dinners at night, soccer
- 56:12practices. Like we still have, for example,
- 56:15as a mom, all the responsibilities of those things
- 56:17while also trying to run a business.
- 56:19So it's not to me that, you know, even potentially women
- 56:24couldn't build these bigger businesses, but there were other
- 56:26things in their life that were needing their time and their
- 56:28attention and their energy on top of the business.
- 56:31So I think that's one factor. The second factor is the fact
- 56:33that I think many women in business feel they have to be
- 56:37men to have a big business. Like we got to build the way the
- 56:41boys do in order to be able to have a big business.
- 56:44And I don't believe that that's to be true because the reality
- 56:46is if you or I have a kid tomorrow.
- 56:48And again, this is not to assume that all women want to have
- 56:50children, but I'm saying for the for the situations, for example,
- 56:54that they do. If you want to have a child and
- 56:57you want to go on mat leave, but I mean by mat leave, by the way,
- 57:00is maternity leave. If you want to go on maternity
- 57:02leave or just take time off, that's time that you're off of
- 57:05your business and your business has to be able to sustain and go
- 57:07on without you. When men have children, they're
- 57:10not always taking time off of their business.
- 57:13They may take us a short amount of time off initially at the
- 57:15beginning, but but they're often times getting right back into
- 57:18their career and right back into working and their wife
- 57:21potentially will stay at home. So think about yourself being
- 57:24the business owner or yourself being the provider.
- 57:26Maybe that again puts strain on how much you can grow your
- 57:29business. The other thing that I think is
- 57:33also, you know, a factor in this is just the reality that women
- 57:37even now in investments, right? Like even if you go big business
- 57:41and you're a startup business and you're wanting to get
- 57:42outside investing, female owned businesses and female operated
- 57:46businesses are getting invested into less overall as a general
- 57:50statistic than male businesses. So there's also just a general
- 57:54gender divide, traditional gender divide between these two
- 58:00different parties, like men are getting different investment
- 58:02than women's businesses are typically getting.
- 58:05And so all of these contribute to women not being able to get
- 58:10to the bigger and bigger, bigger levels in business on average.
- 58:15Now I'm not saying in general. I'm saying on average because
- 58:17then let's go back to the stat. Less than 2% of female founded
- 58:19businesses achieve 7 figures a year in revenue.
- 58:22I don't think that has anything to do with the fact that you or
- 58:25I don't have the knowledge, the expertise, the skills, the
- 58:29ability to generate billion dollar businesses because you do
- 58:33and I do like we, we have it within us to do that.
- 58:37What I think is the true difficulty is that the way that
- 58:41we are being coached, the way that we are being led to grow
- 58:44these businesses is not considerate of the fact of the
- 58:48other influences that we have to navigate.
- 58:51And so we're being taught basically the dude way of doing
- 58:55it, but trying to fit ourselves into that box.
- 58:57And frankly, it's not going to work.
- 58:59So when I started to see all of this and I started to really
- 59:03research it and I started to realize what the real issue was
- 59:06here, I realized something has to change.
- 59:10Women need to know how to build a business and prepare, for
- 59:14example, for mat leave or maturity leave so their business
- 59:17can continue to run scale even when they're they're out of the
- 59:20business. Women need to have people who
- 59:22understand and you can coach them understanding their
- 59:26realities of what they have to navigate as women while also
- 59:29helping them to build these big businesses.
- 59:31So for us, our mission became we are here to change the stat.
- 59:36We're here to change how many women surpass 7 figures a year
- 59:40in revenue. And it's not because seven
- 59:42figures is the marker. It's not because building A7
- 59:45figure business means anything different than a $750,000 a year
- 59:48business. It's because when we change that
- 59:51stat of how many women are making seven figures a year in
- 59:54their business, what we're really doing is rewriting how
- 59:58women and the, again, inequality that's happening naturally
- 1:00:02within the business world or how moms in the business world are
- 1:00:06empowered to go and achieve massive things.
- 1:00:09That's really what we're doing by changing the stat.
- 1:00:13And so that's really what became the mission of our business and
- 1:00:15that is the mission of our Business Today.
- 1:00:18That's why I'm so excited and so happy to help moms who are
- 1:00:20starting businesses and why, you know, we're excited that a lot
- 1:00:24of the women inside of our program are the provider of
- 1:00:27their households. Like we are changing the way
- 1:00:30that the world has known women in business and potentially even
- 1:00:34women in their homes. And so because of that, I
- 1:00:38realized that when I hit that 7 figure mark, every business has
- 1:00:41to become something more than revenue.
- 1:00:42And so that's been charging us today.
- 1:00:44And that leads us to create the offers that we do today.
- 1:00:47It creates the brands that we have, the marketing that we
- 1:00:49create. The reason I have this podcast
- 1:00:51and why I teach you, you know, all the frameworks, all the
- 1:00:54structures and the overviews of everything that we teach here.
- 1:00:56And that's because, you know, I really do believe and what the
- 1:01:01reason I want to share today's journey is #1 all of us start
- 1:01:05with a programming around money that we need to understand
- 1:01:10because it does correlate to how we show up.
- 1:01:12And as I said today, I think that that experience and seeing
- 1:01:15what one side of my family had as access to money influenced
- 1:01:19what I believed to be possible for Money 2.
- 1:01:22I think we also need to look at the impact that labels have put
- 1:01:25on us. Labels of you're not smart
- 1:01:27enough, labels of you don't have the credentials, labels of
- 1:01:30whatever someone has told you to be true.
- 1:01:33And the learning disability did that for me and I think for you,
- 1:01:36I want to invite you to say what labels have been put on me, what
- 1:01:39labels have set? Has someone given to me that are
- 1:01:42not mine to hold? Those are not mine to be true.
- 1:01:45Those are not mine that I I believe to my core. 3rd, I think
- 1:01:49the other thing I want you to take from today is the power of
- 1:01:52pivoting the power of pull the thread right?
- 1:01:56So like when you have this calling to something, get
- 1:01:58curious about that. When you have an opportunity in
- 1:02:00front of you and you feel like maybe this could be something,
- 1:02:02get curious about that. Lean into those moments to see
- 1:02:07is there something there. This entire journey I never had
- 1:02:10a vision of I never knew any of this was going to happen.
- 1:02:13The only thing that I feel has been a really key factor in my
- 1:02:16success is that I see the little the little hints along the way
- 1:02:20and I trust them. And I trust myself to say,
- 1:02:22listen, this could be an opportunity, let's explore.
- 1:02:25This could be an opportunity, let's explore.
- 1:02:27And as soon as I feel like it's not an opportunity for me, I
- 1:02:29move on and I move very quickly. All this happened in a pretty
- 1:02:33short amount of time I would say like you know from me being a
- 1:02:36server to having a 7 figure business was really in a matter
- 1:02:38of around two 2 1/2 years. So like it was a very short
- 1:02:42amount of time. And because of that, I want to
- 1:02:45encourage you to not stay somewhere or in something or
- 1:02:49with something you're doing right now.
- 1:02:51If you don't see a vision with it, if you don't see a future
- 1:02:53with it, if you're learning something today and that thing
- 1:02:56you're learning and that awareness you're getting or that
- 1:02:58skill or that trait you're getting right now can help you
- 1:03:00in the future, that can be very valuable.
- 1:03:02But if you are just staying somewhere because it's what
- 1:03:04you've have always done, it might be time that you move on
- 1:03:07to something new. Maybe there's something new that
- 1:03:09you're being asked to to lean into and to call up and toward.
- 1:03:13And the other thing that I think is important as well that I've
- 1:03:16learned along the way is also the fact that, you know, the
- 1:03:20hustle is needed in certain seasons.
- 1:03:23But if your hustle season becomes your life, that's where
- 1:03:25things start to become a problem.
- 1:03:27And so I really also want to invite you that if you have been
- 1:03:30in a hustle season, if you've been in this grind, grind,
- 1:03:33grind, and you want to have a new way of doing life and a new
- 1:03:36way of doing business, there are other ways to grow into scale.
- 1:03:40And that's not always necessary forever.
- 1:03:42It might be needed for a season, but to be needed forever is not
- 1:03:45a way you want to grow and scale a business.
- 1:03:47And most importantly, I want to note that if I could have you
- 1:03:52take anything away from today, it would be the fact that a
- 1:03:55number is not going to be the thing that gives you meaning in
- 1:03:58your life. So you might think because you
- 1:04:02see everyone else on social media who tells you what your
- 1:04:04value is, oh, you're valuable when you make $100,000 a month.
- 1:04:07You're valuable when you make $50,000 a month.
- 1:04:10That's bullshit. None of that matters.
- 1:04:13What matters is the fact that you enjoy your business.
- 1:04:17It's providing you what you need for your purpose, your
- 1:04:20fulfillment, your passion, your vision.
- 1:04:22Is it overall structured intentionally?
- 1:04:25And then that will tell you what your number is.
- 1:04:28You need to figure out yourself, then figure out your number, not
- 1:04:31have this random number and then figure out where you fit within
- 1:04:33it. That is the easiest way to
- 1:04:36really have a successful business that's also very deeply
- 1:04:39aligned to you. Too many will look to say I want
- 1:04:42this number, but I have no idea why I want it.
- 1:04:44It's mainly because the Internet told me that that's what makes
- 1:04:46me, you know, meaningful. And that's where we get stuck
- 1:04:50because we start to push toward this thing that's really,
- 1:04:53truthfully, not even ours in the 1st place.
- 1:04:55And so if I could offer anything to you today, it would be to,
- 1:05:00you know, maybe just take a moment right now and to ask
- 1:05:03yourself, where do I see myself within this story?
- 1:05:06What are things that I feel were traits or decisions or thoughts
- 1:05:10or beliefs in this story that I could potentially take and go
- 1:05:15run with within my current journey right now within my
- 1:05:18current story. And most importantly, I would
- 1:05:21also invite, you know, have you told your story recently?
- 1:05:24I, I realized that, you know, our first episode ever of
- 1:05:27ambitious was called the Power of the Pivot.
- 1:05:29And it literally is an overview of my story.
- 1:05:32And we are like 80 something episodes in now.
- 1:05:35And I've never told that story since that first episode.
- 1:05:38And so this was also an invitation to remember that your
- 1:05:41story is not just about your timeline, but it's also about
- 1:05:44sharing with people the lessons and the insights of what you've
- 1:05:48learned along the way. And I also want to use it as an
- 1:05:50invitation for you to Share your story because your story is
- 1:05:52powerful and there's a lot of things that someone who you
- 1:05:56share it with can learn from you, but they're only going to
- 1:05:58get that if you share it. So this is also an invitation.
- 1:06:00If you haven't done so in your marketing with your community,
- 1:06:03on your platform, let today be the day that you remind yourself
- 1:06:06that your story needs to be shared.
- 1:06:08And saying it one time is not enough.
- 1:06:10We need to make sure that we're saying it and sharing it often
- 1:06:12because it can inspire and help and change and motivate and
- 1:06:15impact others. So all that to be said, I want
- 1:06:19to say thank you so much for hanging out with me today.
- 1:06:21I, you know, obviously love doing these episodes for you and
- 1:06:25if there is ever a topic that you feel like I would love to
- 1:06:27hear you speak about blank shoot me Adm.
- 1:06:30I talk to you guys every single week in the DMS and I I can't
- 1:06:32thank you enough. I love hearing from you.
- 1:06:34So thank you for all of your messages and all the DMS that
- 1:06:36I've been getting. And if you are someone who has a
- 1:06:38topic, shoot me a message. I would love to hear from you
- 1:06:41about any brainstorm of like, I'd love to hear an episode on
- 1:06:43blank and also maybe, you know, obviously today this is it's
- 1:06:47usually a little bit of a stretchy episode for me because
- 1:06:49it's a pretty vulnerable share. And so because of that, if there
- 1:06:52is anything that maybe landed free today or that you feel like
- 1:06:55you kind of saw yourself within or that you were able to
- 1:06:57resonate with, it would mean the absolute world to me if you
- 1:07:00would reach out and shoot me a message and just let me know
- 1:07:02what landed. Maybe as a part of the story
- 1:07:03that you feel like you saw yourself within or maybe
- 1:07:06something that you feel like you want to start to execute or do
- 1:07:09as a result of hearing it today. And so all of it would mean the
- 1:07:12world to me if you would shoot a message over.
- 1:07:13So shoot a message and slide into my DMSI can't wait to chat
- 1:07:16with you. And with all that being said,
- 1:07:18we'll see you on the next episode.
- 1:07:19But as always, stay ambitious.
