- 0:00Ezekiel chapter 24 Dear Lord, please open our ears to hear
- 0:06what you have to say through Ezekiel in this chapter.
- 0:09We ask this in Jesus name, Amen. It's called Jerusalem as a
- 0:14cooking pot. In the ninth year, in the 10th
- 0:17month, on the 10th day, the word of the Lord came to me.
- 0:22Son of Man, record this date, this very date, because the king
- 0:26of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem this very day.
- 0:31Tell this rebellious people a parable and say to them, this is
- 0:35what the sovereign Lord says. Put on the cooking pot, put on,
- 0:39put it on and pour water on it. Put into it the pieces of meat,
- 0:45all the choice pieces, the leg, the shoulder.
- 0:48Fill it with the best of these bones.
- 0:51Take the pick of the flock, pile wood beneath it for the bones,
- 0:54bring it to a boil, and cook the bones in it.
- 0:57For this is what the Sovereign Lord says.
- 0:59Woe to the city of bloodshed, to the pot now encrusted, whose
- 1:05deposit will not go away. Take the meat out piece by
- 1:10piece, in whatever order it comes, for the blood she shed is
- 1:15in her midst. She poured it on the bare rock.
- 1:18She did not pour it on the ground where the dust would
- 1:21cover it. To stir up wrath and take
- 1:25revenge. I put her blood on the bare rock
- 1:28so that it would not be covered. Therefore this is what the
- 1:32Sovereign Lord says. Woe to the city of bloodshed.
- 1:36I too will pile the wood high. So heap on the wood and kindle
- 1:41the fire. Cook the meat well, mixing in
- 1:44the spices, and let the bones be charred.
- 1:46Then let the empty pot. Then set the empty pot on the
- 1:51coals till it becomes hot and its copper glows, so that its
- 1:56impurities may be melted and its deposit burned away.
- 2:01It has frustrated all efforts. Its heavy deposit has not been
- 2:06removed, not even by fire. Now your impurity is lewdness
- 2:11because I tried to cleanse you, but you would not be cleansed
- 2:16from your impurity. You will not be clean again
- 2:19until my wrath against you has subsided.
- 2:24I want to pause right here because this basically,
- 2:28essentially is just saying, you know from God.
- 2:32I've tried over and over and over again to tell you to clean
- 2:35up and you're not doing it. And I've even put you through
- 2:39fire and it doesn't matter. You're still not doing it.
- 2:42And then he gives, and I think this might even have a future
- 2:46warning to it. He gives in verse 1413.
- 2:51He says because I tried to cleanse you, but you would not
- 2:56be cleansed from your impurity. You will not be clean again
- 3:00until my wrath against you has subsided.
- 3:04I believe this has future implications because there will
- 3:09be people who study and times talk about Jacob's trouble where
- 3:15it's the city of Israel that will have to go through God's
- 3:20wrath because of this a long time ago.
- 3:24And it's because there was no turning, there was no repentance
- 3:27to God. And then also, I mean, doesn't
- 3:31say this here, but also we know from the New Testament that
- 3:39Jesus made atonement for sin, but because the Jewish people
- 3:44rejected Jesus, they are not covered by that.
- 3:47So if we do not accept Jesus, if we do not welcome Jesus into our
- 3:52life, then we are going to be just like the Israelites.
- 3:56We are not going to be covered by the blood that Jesus that
- 4:03came out, you know, from Jesus's side while he was on the cross.
- 4:07That's why when people talk about the blood of Jesus, it's
- 4:09his crucifixion in Hebrews. It tells us that without the
- 4:15shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sins and or there
- 4:19is no atonement of sins and, and that's what Jesus did on the
- 4:23cross. So anyway, that's another reason
- 4:27why Jesus has said I am the way, the truth and the life and no
- 4:32one comes to the Father except through me.
- 4:34So continuing in verse 14, I, the Lord have spoken.
- 4:38The time has come for me to act. I will not hold back.
- 4:42I will not have pity, nor will I relent.
- 4:45You will be judged according to your conduct and your actions,
- 4:49declares the sovereign Lord. So here's something else that
- 4:53does also apply to us. If we don't accept Jesus as our
- 5:00Lord and believe that he died on the cross for our sins.
- 5:07The other, that's one thing. Believing that he died on the
- 5:09cross for our sins, I think that's easy for a lot of people.
- 5:12But do we make Jesus Lord over our life?
- 5:16Do we ask God for guidance? Do we want to be led by the Holy
- 5:21Spirit or do we reject? Do we still have rebellion to
- 5:25God? Because if we still have
- 5:27rebellion, just because we believe doesn't mean anything
- 5:31because the Bible also says that even the demons believe and
- 5:36shudder. So believing alone is, you know,
- 5:41you're, it's no different than what a demon does.
- 5:44And we know that demons are evil and they're not going to be in
- 5:48God's Kingdom after Jesus returns.
- 5:51There will be a separation of good and evil and if we have not
- 5:56accepted Jesus, we will be on the sides of evil because Jesus
- 6:03said, you know, I'm the way, the truth and the life and no one
- 6:06can come to me. That's why it's really
- 6:07concerning about other religions or any religion that doesn't
- 6:11acknowledge Jesus because it's essentially sending people to
- 6:16hell. That's essentially what's
- 6:18happening and people are deceived by it.
- 6:21And so no one's forced to believe, but it's a pretty
- 6:27important decision to make. And if you question about Jesus,
- 6:33it's something he is something. He is someone who you really
- 6:38need to get to know and you need to like do all your research if
- 6:41you need that in order to believe about him.
- 6:46And then also to have him to welcome him into your life and
- 6:50to come in agreement with God, to come in agreement with God's
- 6:54covenant. I mean, God has a Kingdom.
- 6:56The Kingdom has rules. Are you willing to abide by
- 7:00those rules? Are you willing to live in that?
- 7:03I mean, that's a decision that we have to make.
- 7:05If we're not, we're rebelling God and God's.
- 7:07Do you think God wants rebels in his Kingdom, Somebody who's
- 7:11fighting him on his rules, on his laws, on his ways?
- 7:15I don't. It doesn't just make any kind of
- 7:18logical sense that God would allow people who reject his laws
- 7:23to live in his Kingdom. I mean, even us as humans, we
- 7:29don't want people who would conflict with our moral laws
- 7:35living in our country. We don't want people who want to
- 7:39murder living in our country. We want to protect life.
- 7:44So there's there's a difference and and if you think humans do
- 7:47it, God is perfect. So wouldn't God do it even more
- 7:51so All right, going back to Scripture, verse 15, the word of
- 7:56the Lord came to me, son of man with one blow.
- 8:00I am about to take away from you the delight of your eyes, yet do
- 8:06not lament or weep or shed any tears.
- 8:09Groan quietly. Do not mourn for the dead.
- 8:14Keep your turban fastened and your sandals on your feet.
- 8:18Do not cover your mustache and beard or eat the customary food
- 8:21of mourners. So I spoke to the people in the
- 8:24morning, and in the evening my wife died.
- 8:28The next morning I did as I had been commanded.
- 8:31Then the people asked me, Won't you tell us what these things
- 8:35have to do with us? Why are you acting like this?
- 8:40So I said to them. The word of the Lord came to me,
- 8:44Say to the people of Israel, This is what the sovereign Lord
- 8:47says. I am about to desecrate my
- 8:49sanctuary, the stronghold in which you take pride, the
- 8:53delight of your eyes, the object of your affection.
- 8:57The sons and daughters you left behind will fall by the sword,
- 9:02and you will do as I have done. You will not cover your mustache
- 9:06or your beard or eat the customary food of mourners.
- 9:10You will keep your turbans on your head and your sandals on
- 9:12your feet. You will not mourn or weep, but
- 9:15will waste away because of your sins and groan among yourselves.
- 9:22Ezekiel will be a sign to you. You will do just as he has done.
- 9:27When this happens, you will know that I am the Sovereign Lord and
- 9:32you Son of Man. On the day I take away their
- 9:35stronghold, joy and glory, the delight of their eyes, their
- 9:39heart, heart's desire, and their sons and daughters as well.
- 9:44On that day a fugitive will come to tell you the news.
- 9:48At that time your mouth will be opened, you will speak with him
- 9:52and will no longer be silent. So you will be a sign to them
- 9:57and they will know that I am the Lord.
- 10:01That's the end of chapter 24. So I'm going to read the
- 10:04questions and answers for this. Like how long was Ezekiel
- 10:08silent? It's not entirely clear.
- 10:10It seems that from early on in his ministry, perhaps a sign of
- 10:15his calling, Ezekiel could not speak unless he gave a direct
- 10:19word from God, and that's found in chapter 3, verses 26 through
- 10:2327 in. In these verses, God let Ezekiel
- 10:28know that he would once again be able to speak when a fugitive
- 10:32came to Babylon with the news of Jerusalem's fall.
- 10:36The news arrived about three years later in 585 BC.
- 10:43Could you imagine that being silent for three years?
- 10:49So that was very similar to what?
- 10:54Was it Samuel or was it Samuel I, I can't remember now, or
- 10:59Zechariah. Zechariah and Elizabeth, I think
- 11:03it was when John the Baptist was conceived and or foretold and
- 11:12Zechariah was unable to speak until he wrote on something that
- 11:16his name shall be John as he was commanded and then he began to
- 11:22speak after that. So God has done this a few times
- 11:25that that I mean that time comes to mind also.
- 11:29So let's read about the the beginning of this chapter. 24
- 11:33the 9th year of what? The 9th year of King Jehovah
- 11:37Chin's exile. That is in 588 BC.
- 11:41Ezekiel had been taken to Babylon along with Jehovah Chen
- 11:46in 597 BC. The precise date was January
- 11:5115th, 588 BC, the day Nebuchadnezzar laid siege to
- 11:57Jerusalem. And that's found in Second Kings
- 12:03verse 2 and then Second Kings 25 verse one.
- 12:08So what is a parable? A parable is a short story that
- 12:11illustrates a specific point or truth.
- 12:14By speaking in riddles, allegories, or parables, the
- 12:17speaker invites the hearer into the word of the story.
- 12:21When pure invectives are spoken, they can heart, they can harden
- 12:26the will of the hearer. When a story is told, the hearer
- 12:30is not as cautious. Before the hearer knows it, he
- 12:33or she is in the midst of the story as a main character and
- 12:37quite possibly under indictment. Recall Nathan's story to David
- 12:42after David had slept with Bathsheba.
- 12:45Before David knew it, he had indicted himself.
- 12:50Why compare Jerusalem to a cooking pot?
- 12:53The evil leaders of Jerusalem compared themselves to choice
- 12:57meat in a cooking pot and were confident that they would be.
- 13:02They would not be charged, charred by the flames of divine
- 13:06judgment. The Lord challenged their false
- 13:09confidence and warned them that warned that they would not
- 13:13escape judgment. The fire under the pot.
- 13:17Quote or in parentheses. The Babylonians would cook, look
- 13:20the meat and each piece would then be received a reference,
- 13:26but and then each piece would then be removed a reference to
- 13:30the Exiles. What is the deposit in the pot?
- 13:34The deposit is the corruption or rust inside the steeping
- 13:38cauldron that will not go away. The people of Jerusalem thought
- 13:42that they were the Lord's choice meet.
- 13:44In fact, they were. In fact, they were corrupt meat
- 13:48stirring in or stewing in a corrupt and rusty pot.
- 13:53Why cover up blood with dust? One would expect a murderer to
- 13:59try to cover up his crime, but Jerusalem's citizens made no
- 14:03effort to hide the evidence of their misdeeds.
- 14:07The Lord refers here to crimes against the poor that resulted,
- 14:11whether directly or indirectly, in their death.
- 14:15Why would God cause the death of Ezekiel's wife?
- 14:18Simply for an object lesson? God often required his prophets
- 14:23to perform difficult tasks or endure suffering.
- 14:28That's found in Hebrews 1135 through 38.
- 14:31Ezekiel's suffering was an attention getting device by
- 14:36which God forced His people to confront the realities of their
- 14:40sin. Ezekiel's experience
- 14:43foreshadowed the emotional trauma the Exiles would endure.
- 14:48What was the customary food of mourners?
- 14:50Mourners ate very little during the seven day mourning period,
- 14:55although a funeral feast was prepared to feed the throngs of
- 14:59people who came to comfort the bereaved.
- 15:03How did Ezekiel's lack of mourning affect the people?
- 15:07In ancient Israel, it was socially proper to publicly
- 15:12mourn the deft death of a loved one.
- 15:15Customs of grief included loud weeping, tearing one's clothes,
- 15:20wearing sackcloth, putting dust on one's head, and going
- 15:23barefoot. When people noticed that Ezekiel
- 15:26was not mourning his wife's death in the normal way, they
- 15:30asked why. At that point, he explained the
- 15:34symbolic significance of his actions.
- 15:37And that's the end for the questions and answers.
- 15:40I'm going to read a couple things from Exploring Ezekiel,
- 15:45the book written by Amir Sarfati with Doctor Rick Young.
- 15:49And this is from the summary. There are a few things that I
- 15:54had outlined regarding chapter 24.
- 16:00So the IT says the Princess and leaders displayed an arrogant UN
- 16:07uniformed attitude in their minds, God was simply a big
- 16:12burly, obedient bodyguard is and then we have to think about
- 16:17this. This is me talking now we have
- 16:19to think about this. Do we think the same thing of
- 16:22God? Do we think that God is just
- 16:24there to protect us? Do we, you know, I mean, because
- 16:28He is and He does. And there are angels that
- 16:31protect his children. But this is really important,
- 16:36what Amir says. But they had it all backwards.
- 16:39God is the one in control. He gives us freedom to live and
- 16:45act as we want. But our freedom is like a rope
- 16:50attached to our necks. There is only so far we can go
- 16:53before we will either turn back to God or keep going and hang
- 16:59ourselves. That's kind of a rude awakening.
- 17:02Just think about that it. We are free, but only so free.
- 17:10Now we come to the incident that I mentioned at the beginning of
- 17:13this chapter, the most tragic personal loss, loss of every
- 17:16prophet. And then he, Amir, writes the
- 17:21verses about Ezekiel's wife dying, and I'm going to skip a
- 17:26paragraph. And then Ezekiel was barely in
- 17:29his 30s. You know, a lot of times when we
- 17:32see the imagery, that's what's so bad about imagery, I guess
- 17:37that's not depicted accurately. A lot of times we'll see Ezekiel
- 17:42as, like some, you know, old man with long white hair, you know,
- 17:49and, you know, all wrinkled up and everything, like, he's
- 17:53really old. But this is what, you know, I
- 17:56wouldn't have known this, but Ezekiel was barely in his 30s.
- 18:01So he's a young guy. And this is he's losing his wife
- 18:05at a young age, which had to be very challenging for him.
- 18:10And he was likely very filled with grief.
- 18:14I mean to have that happen. So it says 1 morning when he met
- 18:20with God, the Lord told him that his wife was going to die.
- 18:23That same evening she was gone. Why?
- 18:26Because God wanted to make a point to the people.
- 18:29Apparently sending a memo or eating some more dung cooked
- 18:33bread wasn't enough to communicate what he wanted to
- 18:36say. God had determined that the best
- 18:39way to illustrate his prophecy was to take the life of the
- 18:42prophet's beloved partner. This was wonderful for her
- 18:47because she got to see her God. It was horrible for Ezekiel
- 18:52because he lost the apple of his eye.
- 18:54What point could be that important?
- 18:58It was this. Just like Ezekiel's wife was his
- 19:01delight, the temple in Jerusalem was the delight of God.
- 19:06However, it was also the delight of the people in exile.
- 19:10As long as it stood, the sinful population had a tangible
- 19:15demonstration of their supposedly strong connection to
- 19:18God. The day was soon coming though
- 19:21when they would get word that the temple had fallen.
- 19:25Just know God told them that I was behind that.
- 19:29This reminds me of Jesus's powerful words.
- 19:32Therefore, my Father loves me because I lay down my life, that
- 19:37I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I
- 19:42lay it down myself. The temple wouldn't be destroyed
- 19:46because of the will of Nebuchadnezzar, but because of
- 19:50the will of God. No one can take anything from
- 19:55the Lord, be it the life of his Son or the temple of his name
- 20:00that he placed in Jerusalem. God told the people that when
- 20:04the day came and the temple was destroyed, they shouldn't mourn
- 20:08for it, just as Ezekiel didn't mourn for his wife.
- 20:12They had brought this on themselves.
- 20:15They were suffering the just punishment for their sins.
- 20:20It was time for them to turn things around so that the Lord
- 20:24could turn the page and begin the next chapter for Israel.
- 20:29And that ends all of what I have to say regarding chapter 24 of
- 20:35Ezekiel. If you're not subscribed, please
- 20:39do so to stay in the Word mostly every day and share this with
- 20:44others if you found it beneficial.
- 20:47Just because it's important for us to get to know God better
- 20:54each day and be in communication with God.
- 20:59Our prayers are really important, but studying His Word
- 21:02is how we get to know Him. So that's why I do this and
- 21:06hopefully it's beneficial to more than just me.
- 21:09Thank you.
