Hi everybody, this is Phil Rizzuto welcoming you to another game in the 13th straight year of Yankee baseball as brought to you by Ballantine Bills.
• 0:17
Today the Yankees meet the Boston Redcocks here at Fenway Park in the Yankees last appearance here in Boston.
• 0:24
For the New York Yankees leading off playing right field Hank Bob. Johnny Krubeck is at shortstop today batting in the second position.
• 0:33
Cletus Boyer is giving a bit of a rest. He's been playing real fine defensive ball but hasn't been hitting the way Casey Stanger would like to see him hit.
• 0:43
So he figures a day or two rest might get him climbed up a little more.
• 0:49
When he puts him back in the lineup he'll start belting that ball the way he knows he can.
• 0:54
Nicky Mantle is in center field hitting third. Yogi Berra batting in the clean up spot and doing the catching.
• 1:00
Elston Howard at first base hitting fifth. Hector Lopez batting in the sixth position playing left field.
• 1:06
Gil McJugle batting seventh and playing third base. At second base hitting in the eighth position Bobby Richardson and doing the pitching and batting ninth, Duke Maas.
• 1:18
For the Boston Red Sox leading off playing second base Pumpski Green. Gary Geiger batting in the second position and playing center field.
• 1:29
Pete Reynolds will be playing first base batting third. Gene Stevenson left field batting in the clean up spot. Ted Williams not in the starting lineup.
• 1:38
Jackie Jensen batting fifth playing right field playing third base and batting sixth Frank Malzone. And there go the Red Sox out on the field.
• 1:49
Everybody's worrying about the White Sox and the Indians who's going to win the pennant between the two of them.
• 1:55
But the Yankees are playing the Red Sox today.
• 1:59
Sammy White doing the catching batting seventh. Don Budden batting eighth playing shortstop and Jerry Cassell doing the pitching and batting ninth.
• 2:11
Ready to go. Hank Bauer swinging a couple of big bats. Walking up towards home plate. Jerry Cassell rubbing up the new ball putting a little rosin on it starting his warm up tosses.
• 2:24
He's got one nine and lost eight on the air against the Yankees. He has no wins and one defeat which is his lifetime record against New York.
• 2:36
Jerry was born September 27th 1933 in Brooklyn, New York. He's 6'2", 200 pounds. Still lives in Brooklyn.
• 2:53
Cassell's story reads like a movie.
• 2:56
His parents passed away when he was a youngster. He was raised by an older sister and a brother who together with his CYO director became interested in baseball and continued his interest to where he became a big leaguer.
• 3:25
Hank Bauer stepping into the batter's box batting 230. Hank has 17 doubles, nine homers and 34 runs batted in.
• 3:41
Hank Corsetti coaching at third base. Ralph Houser down at first. On deck Tony Kubek. Boy this is a gorgeous day. The wind is blowing out by the way which means any balls hit up in the air will carry the first pitch of the ball game is a strike.
• 3:55
A curve ball on the outside part of the plate.
• 4:00
Cassell lost to the Yankees 8-5 back on August 11th losing to Duke Maas his opponent today. Wind up by the right hander. He kicks and the fastball is fouled off the screen and back of the plate strike two.
• 4:20
Cassell started two other times against the Yankees on July 11th and August 16th but he was knocked out in both games and did not figure in the final decision.
• 4:39
Yankees 15 and a half games behind the White Sox. One full game behind the Tigers for third place. Here's the pitch popped in the air and back of shortstop and left center field. Budden going back. Stevens coming on and Stevens what a pitch Stevens makes.
• 4:54
Right off his shoot tops and half the ball hanging out of his glove and there was almost one of those triple collisions that you fear and that sometimes happens. Budden, Gary Geiger and Gene Stevens all converging on the ball in short left center field and Stevens stopped at one second and then continued and he's got those long arms and he just reached out low to the ground and caught the ball in the webbing of his glove.
• 5:21
What a beautiful play by Gene Stevens on what could have been a gift double for Hank Bar. One away here's Tony Kubeck. The pitch to Tony is outside ball one. Kubeck batting 293 has 19 doubles, 7 triples, 5 homers and 44 runs batted in. Tony has a 7 game hitting streak and he's the hottest hitter on the Yankees right now.
• 5:44
Kasell ready. The pitch is low ball two, two nothing. On deck Mickey Mantle. So the ballgame starts off right away with a spectacular play by the Red Sox left fielder Gene Stevens.
• 5:59
Happy to hear that the Armed Forces radio picking up our broadcast today for our service men and women around the world. There's a foul back out of play just to our left. Right in the Skyview seat.
• 6:15
  Souvenir for Tom Yorkey.
• 6:19
  Owner of the Red Sox.
• 6:24
As a fellow that doesn't need a baseball.
• 6:32
Yorkey has been a great man for baseball and for baseball players.
• 6:38
  Real sportsman.
• 6:43
He pitched to Kubeck his top foul again to the left and out of play. This one going into the box seats and back of the Yankee dugout. A man with a yellow shirt just stuck up one hand just as nonchalant as you'd like with a bag of peanuts in the other and made a nice catch.
• 6:58
  He's got glasses on too.
• 7:02
Not that that makes any difference. A lot of ball players wearing glasses.
• 7:07
  Just like plucking cherries.
• 7:11
He's got two to count on Tony Kubeck one out and nobody on. No score on the top of the first.
• 7:17
To wind up the pitch is popped to left field. Gene Stevens flips the glasses down. Moving under it and makes the catch for the second out. So Stevens has helped Cassell retire the first two Yankees. Babers and brings up Mickey Mantle.
• 7:45
A real popular ball player and a real good ball player. Fans usually don't take the time to boo or cheer the mediocre ball players unless they make a great play.
• 7:57
Cassell's pitch to Mickey is high ball one. Mantle is batting 285. He has 22 doubles, 4 triples, 26 homers and 67 runs batted in. Mantle batting left handed against Jerry Cassell. Pitch is swung at a missed strike one one on one on Jack Yogiberra.
• 8:27
One ball one strike. Yankee dugout just in back of third base and the Red Sox in back of first base. It's a real cozy ball park. It's right up on the playing field. Here's the pitch. It's over strike two.
• 8:48
Cassell with a big motion that time. Took something off his fastball. Mickey you watched it just dance over the plate. One ball two strikes. Two out, nobody on. No score here on the top of the first.
• 9:17
Cassell in the lineup the pitch is foul below it bouncing off the screen.
• 9:27
Count holes at one ball and two strikes.
• 9:34
Yankees have won only three games here at Fenway Park all year while losing seven. They've won four in lower sport of the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. Season series stands at seven wins for the Yankees and 11 for the Red Sox.
• 9:53
Here's a pitch to Mickey high outside ball two two and two.
• 10:08
Look at the standings over the course of the year you realize why the Yankees are not in first place right now. They usually play better on the road than they do at home but not so this year. There's a foul back against the screen. Count holes at two and two.
• 10:25
The only two teams with Yankees have an advantage over are Kansas City and Washington on the road. All the other clubs have won more games against the Yankees on their home field.
• 10:48
Mickey is called out on strike. The pitch caught the inside corner.
• 10:57
The sale gets a first strikeout and for the Yankees in the top of the first nothing across they go down to one two three order to score at the end of one half inning of play. The Yankees nothing in Boston coming to that.
• 11:25
  Well.
• 11:32
  Well.
• 11:42
  Well.
• 11:44
  Well.
• 11:53
  I'm cold Valentine dear.
• 11:56
  I'm cold Valentine dear.
• 12:02
Yes sir, it's like the song says, to be crisp a beer must have lightness plus true lager flavor.
• 12:08
And Mr. Valentine's got them both.
• 12:10
So enjoy the crisp refresher first chance you get.
• 12:15
Out on the mound for the Yankees today, Duke Marsh.
• 12:18
Marsh has won 12 and lost 6 on the year.
• 12:21
And against the Red Sox he has 3 wins and 1 defeat.
• 12:24
And his lifetime record against Boston 11 wins, 10 defeats.
• 12:27
Lifetime record in the big leagues, 38 wins and 41 defeats.
• 12:36
The announcement just came over the public address system to us here on the radio and television booth
• 12:41
that Ted Williams has been feeling very poorly and came out of the park today,
• 12:47
but was sent back to his hotel room.
• 12:49
He did not accompany the Red Sox on their last swing through the west or the east.
• 12:54
But we thought they had a conference with Tom Yorkey,
• 12:58
owner of the Red Sox, and to his future plans with the Red Sox,
• 13:02
but because of his illness it didn't materialize so we thought they might have some news on Ted's future plans,
• 13:11
but as of now we do not have any.
• 13:21
Elijah Pumpsie Green, switch hitting second baseman, takes the pitch high ball one.
• 13:26
Green's batting.256. He's slipped quite a bit since the Yankees were in town.
• 13:31
He was over the 300 mark last time we were here.
• 13:34
He has three doubles, two triples, and five runs batted in.
• 13:44
Six feet tall, 175 pounds, born October 27, 1934 in Oakland, California.
• 13:50
Fouls the next pitch off Bill McKinley's net. One on one to count.
• 13:56
Last time we were in town, Green injured his right thumb making a tag at second base.
• 14:02
And to put him out of action for a little while, that could be the cause of his slump
• 14:08
because any time your thumb is injured you have trouble gripping the bat.
• 14:12
You can get away with other fingers, but not the thumb.
• 14:15
Curve is low, ball two, two and one.
• 14:22
Billy Jurgis, the skipper of the Red Sox coaching at third, and Del Baker down at first.
• 14:31
Rudy York, the batting coach, hitting on the steps of the Red Sox dugout.
• 14:37
Here's a fastball that's high outside, ball three, three and one.
• 14:41
No score here on the bottom of the first. On deck, Gary Geiger.
• 14:46
The three-one pitch is down the middle, strike two called. Three and two to count.
• 15:11
We know that Billy Jurgis is the only manager in the American League to manage on the base pass.
• 15:21
The National League, Sally Hemis, gets out there.
• 15:26
The ball is popped into left center field, throwing way back, Nadel chasing it.
• 15:31
And can't get it, it's off his glove. He kicks it off the wall, green around first, around second, and holds on.
• 15:37
Long double to deep left center field. Nadel got his glove on the ball, couldn't hold on to it.
• 15:43
And as it pounded off the wall, he kicked it.
• 15:48
Green thought he had a chance for three, but Nadel's throw coming in convinced him to stop and he turned back with a double.
• 15:56
A double to left center field for Green, his fourth double of the year.
• 16:04
It was well hit and with the wind blowing out, the ball carried.
• 16:08
Lopez didn't have a chance for it. Nadel, playing a little bit over in right center, had to go a long ways for it.
• 16:14
Purest got the fingers of his glove on the ball, couldn't hold on to it.
• 16:18
Here's Gary Geiger, the center fielder.
• 16:20
Geiger's batting 257. Has 10 doubles, 4 triples, 10 homers, and 44 runs batted in.
• 16:32
Gil McGoogle moves way in at third base. Geiger, a left-hand hitter.
• 16:36
The pitch is low outside 4-1.
• 16:40
Gary Murl Geiger, born in Sand Ridge, Illinois, 6'1", 164 pounds.
• 16:50
Came to the Red Sox along with first baseman Vic Wurtz from Cleveland in a deal for Jimmy Pearce.
• 16:55
  That was back in 1958.
• 17:00
Green leading off second base, a stretch by Mott, and the pitch is outside ball two, two and nothing.
• 17:08
Casey Stengel said Gary Geiger was a sleeper in that deal and not Vic Wurtz,
• 17:14
on whom the Red Sox had counted for much of their power.
• 17:19
Vic not had too good a year physically.
• 17:26
He was batting 263 with 10 doubles and 7 homers, 45 runs batted in.
• 17:31
That's not a typical Vic Wurtz year.
• 17:35
But you can never count on the injuries.
• 17:37
Alright, here's a stretch. The two-nothing pitch is right down the middle.
• 17:39
  Strike one call.
• 17:44
  On deck, Pete Reynolds.
• 17:48
Interesting note on Geiger, he was a pitcher from 1954 through 1958.
• 17:56
Had one year where he won 20 and lost only seven pitching 26 complete games.
• 18:02
  There's a clear line.
• 18:03
Paul almost gets Del Baker to first base coach.
• 18:06
See that Del can still move around and goes through a few antics down at first base.
• 18:11
Looks like he was jitterbugging there for a minute.
• 18:15
He's going through the count on Geiger. So how about that Geiger?
• 18:19
Won 20 ball games for 26 complete games out of the 28 games that he started.
• 18:26
  That's quite a record.
• 18:34
  Alright, here's a stretch.
• 18:37
Pitch is hit deep to left field.
• 18:39
Lopez going back near the wall.
• 18:42
And makes a beautiful leaping one-hand pass against the scoreboard in left center field.
• 18:47
Green, who was all the way to third, has to scamper back.
• 18:51
We're getting some mighty fine plays here right in the first inning.
• 18:55
Gene Stevens came up with one.
• 18:57
Off Hank Bauer, who led off the ball game.
• 18:59
Mantle almost came up with one off Pumpty Green.
• 19:03
Dying for his two-string catch on Green's double.
• 19:08
And then Hector Lopez made one as he went back as far as he could and leaped as high as he could
• 19:13
and caught the ball just before it hit the scoreboard.
• 19:17
One out. Green remains at second base. Here's Pete Reynolds.
• 19:23
Pete batting 317. Has 32 doubles, 4 triples, 6 homers, and 46 runs batted in.
• 19:34
  James Edward Runnels, nicknamed Pete.
• 19:38
Pitch to Runnels is a curve hit. Deep to left field again.
• 19:40
Lopez going back in front of the scoreboard this time.
• 19:43
Makes the catch, not hit quite as deep as the one by Gary Geiger.
• 19:48
And the left-hand hitters are shooting to left field.
• 19:50
The first three hitters were left-handed, as is the fourth hitter, Gene Stevens.
• 19:56
But the first three hit to the opposite field.
• 19:59
Green to left center and Geiger and Runnels to left.
• 20:03
They're not getting around on the ball.
• 20:07
But of course with the short left field wall here in Boston, it's just 315 feet down the line
• 20:12
and it moves almost straight across.
• 20:14
But in right field it's really deep.
• 20:17
  380.
• 20:22
Two out. Green at second. No score. The curve to Stevens is low.
• 20:30
Ball one. Stevens batting 264. 10 doubles, 1 triple, 3 homers, 31 runs batted in.
• 20:38
  Glenn Eugene Stevens, 6385 pounds.
• 20:43
Pumpty Green still at second base.
• 20:45
  On deck, Jackie Jensen.
• 20:48
Slow curve is hit on the ground at second base. Richardson coming in fifth.
• 20:51
Up with a throw at the first. In time for the outs.
• 20:54
A nice play by Bobby Richardson on a slow ground ball.
• 20:58
For Boston in the bottom of the first, no runs on one base hit.
• 21:02
No Yankees errors and one man left.
• 21:04
And the score at the end of one full inning.
• 21:07
The Yankees nothing and the Red Sox nothing.
• 21:10
Take a look at the scoreboard. It's a mighty important one for both leagues today.
• 21:16
In the American League, three double headers.
• 21:20
This is the only single game in the American League.
• 21:23
Washington is at Baltimore for a double header.
• 21:26
In the first game, Washington failed to score on the top of the first.
• 21:29
  Kamara pitching against O'Dell.
• 21:32
Kansas City is at Chicago for two games.
• 21:35
And Detroit at Cleveland for two.
• 21:39
  And in the first game,
• 21:42
Detroit has just come up with four runs on the top of the second and lead Cleveland 5-2
• 21:46
with Cleveland batting in the bottom of the second.
• 21:48
Foytack for the Tigers, Garcia, Scott, and McLeach in the second and Perry in the second.
• 21:53
Rocky Colavito hit his 40th home of the year in the first inning with a man on for the Cleveland Indians.
• 22:00
That gives Rocky the league lead in the American League tied with Ernie Banks who has 40 now in the National League.
• 22:09
And in the National League, Chicago at Los Angeles playing the night.
• 22:16
St. Louis at San Francisco will start later on.
• 22:19
Pittsburgh and Milwaukee and Philadelphia, Cincinnati all starting later on.
• 22:30
For the Yankees, coming to bat here leading off in the top of the second inning, Yogi Berra.
• 22:37
Yogi batting 283 has had 24 doubles, one triple, 19 homers, and 65 runs batted in.
• 22:45
And the mention of the 19 homers reminds us that on September the 19th,
• 22:50
it'll be Yogi Berra Day at Yankee Stadium against the East Stadium Red Sox.
• 22:55
Patel's Pitchfrey Yogi is in there, strike one called.
• 23:06
In the Kansas City-Chicago game, the batteries have just come in.
• 23:10
Garber for Kansas City and Billy Pierce for the White Sox.
• 23:15
Pitchfrey Yogi is in the dirt, ball one, one-on-one.
• 23:31
  Yogi Berra.
• 23:34
Ready, the pitch is lying in the right center field of base pitch for Yogi.
• 23:38
Jensen going over, backhands the ball, nice play.
• 23:41
Yogi around first, starts the second and comes back.
• 23:43
A beautiful defensive play by Jackie Jensen.
• 23:46
Holds Yogi to a long single and listen to that crowd.
• 23:53
Jensen running as hard as he could to his right, backhanded a ground ball.
• 23:59
A beautiful play and held Yogi to a long single.
• 24:03
That's the first hit for the Yankees.
• 24:07
Jackie Jensen was the most valuable player in the American League last year.
• 24:14
Brings up Elston Howard, Howard batting 278.
• 24:18
Pitch to Elston is strike one, he swings and misses.
• 24:21
  Runnels holding first against Yogi.
• 24:23
Elston has 22 doubles, 4 triples, 17 homers and 68 runs batted in.
• 24:36
The pitch is a ground ball, a shortstop, Budden to Green for one, back to first, double play.
• 24:46
Beautifully executed by the young keystone combination of John Budden and Pumpty Green.
• 24:55
That's another plus in favor of Pumpty Green, he can make that double play.
• 25:01
Here's Hector Lopez with two outs, nobody on, and at the top of the second,
• 25:05
a score on the ball game, Lopez batting 284.
• 25:09
Hector has 24 doubles, 5 triples, 20 homers and 82 runs batted in.
• 25:16
The tailpitch is high, ball one.
• 25:34
That's four just misses outside, ball two, two and nothing.
• 25:45
Good sheet crowd here today at Fenway Park.
• 25:51
Really a pretty park to watch the game from, there's not a bad sheet in the house.
• 25:54
Here's the pitch, it's a little ball three, three and nothing.
• 25:58
The tail with his hands on his hip.
• 26:00
I figure that one was just high enough to have been called a strike.
• 26:05
Bill McKinley, the play don't fire, doesn't think so.
• 26:10
His decision is what counts. On deck for the Yankees, Gil McDougal.
• 26:24
The three nothing pitch is high, ball four. And again, the tail puts his hands on his hip.
• 26:31
Thought that one was in there, there's the first base on balls given up in the ball game.
• 26:39
Lopez is first in the batter, Gil McDougal.
• 26:43
Gil batting 236, has 15 doubles, 6 triple, 4 homers, 26 runs batted in.
• 26:52
Toronto told him first, against Hector Lopez, two out, nobody has scored in the ball game as yet.
• 27:05
The wall in front of the lower box, the back of third, juts out at a sharp angle.
• 27:11
So that sometimes base hits, just go over third base.
• 27:15
The calm off that wall in the shortstop has to be on the alert to go out and field the ball. It kicks out towards left field, but closer to the shortstop.
• 27:23
If he doesn't hustle out, the batter could get a double.
• 27:26
Here's the pitch, hits the deep left center field.
• 27:28
Going back is the center fielder, it's off the wall.
• 27:31
Lopez will score. McDougal is around second base, digging for third.
• 27:35
Jensen's stroke coming in the third.
• 27:37
And Gil is in with a standoff triple, deep off the left center field wall.
• 27:44
Gary Geiger thought he had a shot for the ball, went right through the wall, but then saw it was too high and before he could back up it had bounded over his head.
• 27:52
Now Hector scored easily on McDougal's triple, and the Yankees lead 1-0.
• 28:01
For Gil McDougal, his seventh triple of the year.
• 28:08
And his 27th run battered in, it brings up Bobby Richardson with two outs.
• 28:14
And McDougal is third. Bobby, who has been dropped down in the batting order, has been leading off for quite some time, batting 279.
• 28:21
18 doubles, 5 triples, one home, and 24 runs battered in. Here's the pitch, it's swung at a missed strike one.
• 28:38
Wind up by Cassell. Pitch is low, ball 1-1-1.
• 28:43
So the base on balls again proves disaster.
• 28:47
This time it's Gary Cassell with two out, he walked low-pitch and then McDougal tripled.
• 28:55
  Here's the 1-1 delivery. A foul.
• 29:04
Come up here, I thought I had a shot, Mel thought he had a shot, but neither one could reach it.
• 29:18
  One ball, two strikes.
• 29:25
Here's the wind up. Pitch is lined to left center field, way back there. Geiger going back and makes the running catch just in front of the wall.
• 29:34
After he catches the ball, he brushes into the wall.
• 29:38
Good wood on that ball by Richardson, but not quite high enough.
• 29:41
For the Yankees, in the top of the second one run, on two base hits.
• 29:46
No Red Sox errors and one man left to score at the end of an inning and a half.
• 29:50
The Yankees won and the Red Sox nothing.
• 29:57
Before we start the bottom of the second, let's pause for station identification.
• 30:07
Quality Modern Radio, WO KO First in Albany, New York.
• 30:10
Remember, Yankee baseball is brought to you by Ballantine Beer and Ale and Atlantic Refining Company.
• 30:16
And Troy Buick follows the game.
• 30:19
Jackie Jensen batting 275 will lead off for the Red Sox.
• 30:24
Jackie has 25 doubles, 27 homers, and 98 runs batted in.
• 30:29
The pitch to Jackie is outside ball one. Duke Moss on the mound for the Yankees.
• 30:39
Jensen was tied with Rocky Colavito and Harmon Tilliboo for all the eyes, but Rocky has hit a homer with a man on, gives him an even hundred.
• 30:46
  The curve is low outside.
• 30:53
  Ball two, two and nothing.
• 31:10
Here's a two nothing pitch and there's a drive that deep left center field way back there and up off the screen at the home run.
• 31:20
Oh, wait a minute, wait a minute, that ball, did it hit off the screen or hit off that?
• 31:27
It hit the top of the wall. To me it looked like a home run, but Eddie Rommel, the center field umpire, center field, a second base umpire who ran out the center field,
• 31:35
said a dot nab hit above the screen. Why? To me it looked like the ball hit above the screen on one of those poles hanging down, Joe.
• 31:44
But Eddie Rommel says no, all the Red Sox players in the bullpen and the ground crew are waving that it was a home run.
• 31:53
Well, that's why from back here we're best off not umpiring.
• 31:59
An optical illusion, as Dizzy Dean would say an optical delusion.
• 32:07
But anyway, it's a double for Jensen. Man, was that close to being a home run.
• 32:13
Second hit off Duke Mark, both in doubles, one by Pumpty Green. Here's Frank Malzone.
• 32:21
Malzone batting 278. Takes a pitch over strike one call. Frank has 30 doubles, one triple, 18 homers in 87 runs batted in.
• 32:44
Outside, ball one, one, one. And the excitement of the siding, whether that were a home run or not,
• 32:51
forgot to mention that mantle feel of that ball perfectly off the wall. Caught it in the throw, the second almost got Jensen sliding in.
• 33:00
But we were so anxious to see what the second base umpire, Eddie Rommel, would call it that we forgot to mention that fact.
• 33:08
If you can play the count off this left field wall, you can throw out a lot of base runners.
• 33:14
The one on one to count on Malzone. The pitch is low ball two, two and one. The Yankees one and the Red Sox nothing here in the bottom of the second.
• 33:27
Malzone's another New York boy, born in the Bronx, 5'10", 180 pounds, now lives in Oneonta, New York.
• 33:43
Jensen leading off second. The stretch by Mark. The curve is high outside, ball three, three and one.
• 33:56
  On deck is Sammy White.
• 34:21
The stretch by Mark. The pitch is fouled back out of play. And it's a full count on Malzone, three and two.
• 34:40
Tank has been the American League all-star third baseman the last three years in a row.
• 34:57
Here's the stretch by Mark. The curve is hit in the ground, in the hole, backhand knocked down by Kubek with no chance for a play.
• 35:04
It'll go as a base hit. He had backhand of the ball and the ball popped out of his glove. It goes as an infield single, but Jensen remained on second base.
• 35:15
If Kubek had come up with a ball, he could have thrown Jackie out easily had Jackie decided to run out of the mound.
• 35:20
Now Richardson and Beres talking with Duke Moss.
• 35:25
With runners at first and second and no one out. Here's Sammy White enjoying his best year at the plate since he's been in the big league.
• 35:33
He's batting two 98s, 12 doubles, four triples, one homer and 38 runs batted in.
• 35:53
Sammy, a right hand batter, he's 6'395 pounds, born in Wenatchee, Washington, now lives in Sarasota, Florida.
• 36:04
Big right hand hitter. Here's the stretch. The pitch is inside ball one, almost hit him.
• 36:09
Yankees one, Red Sox nothing. We're in the bottom of the second, but the Red Sox are threatening with runners at first and second and no one out.
• 36:26
Here's the stretch. Pitch is hit to right field, a base hit.
• 36:31
Bauer is up with the ball, hits gentle on third, he'll score as Bauer's throw comes into third base and the ball game's tied up.
• 36:39
Sammy White, punched that ball to right field and that's something Sammy could never do his first few years in the big league.
• 36:47
He pulled everything and as a result was easy to play. But now that he's able to punch that ball to right field, he cannot play him as a full hitter any longer.
• 36:57
And he becomes a tougher batter and a tougher man to get out of there. Malzone held a second base. Jensen scored, the score's tied 1-1.
• 37:05
For Sammy White his 40th run batted in. For Jensen his 92nd run scored on the year.
• 37:14
Here's Don Button, a short stop with runners at first and second and no one out. Button is hitting 225, has 20 doubles, one triple, 8 homers and 45 runs batted in.
• 37:28
Humpty Green on deck, Jerry Casale due to be the next batter. Yankee Enfield not looking for the sacrifice. Casale's a good hitter, they might find him.
• 37:36
Here's the pitch, he takes it inside ball once out of the swing. Now Button looks down to Billy Jurgis coaching at third. Red Sox fans start applauding, they want a rally.
• 37:53
A lot of interest in this Red Sox team, a lot of good young ball players and they're thinking of the future. Here's the stretch, the pitch is low, ball two, two and nothing.
• 38:07
Charlie is up in the Yankee bullpen. Has Duke Mosses in the jam with a short side 1-1 here in the bottom of the second, no one out and runners at first and second.
• 38:27
Here's the stretch, Curve is in there, take one call. Button shakes his head a little bit and walks out of the batter's box, picks up some dirt and throws it down on the ground.
• 38:39
A crowd kind of agreeing with Button that they thought the pitch was low.
• 38:52
As we said before, we thought Jensen's drive was a home run and the umpire didn't, but there's no place to be umpiring from. You've got to be right on the play to call it.
• 39:04
And even then it's tough. Dan Button, 5'11", 178 pounds, born in Tebraville, South Carolina.
• 39:21
Here's the stretch, runners lead off first and second. Ball hits deep to Centifield, way back, Mettle going back at it.
• 39:28
In the Centifield, bleaches for a home run for Don Button. Man, did he tag that one. Woo hoo!
• 39:39
Don Button, it's his ninth home run of the year, RBI's number 46, 47, and 48 in straightaway Centifield, over 420 feet away.
• 39:53
A three run armor for young Don Button. Puts the Red Sox in the lead now, 4-1.
• 40:06
Boy, I'd say that ball was hit. As we told you, the wind is blowing out, but the wind actually didn't help that ball too much.
• 40:13
It was a line drive now, mind you, not a high fly. Nicky went back to the Centifield wall and he turned around and almost couldn't believe what he saw.
• 40:22
  Ball sailing into the seat.
• 40:26
And it looks like that's all for Duke Moss. If the Moss had gotten the Red Sox out in the bottom of the first, giving up a double of green, retiring the next three men,
• 40:37
he did not retire a man here in the second inning, so he has just one inning in which he's given up five hits.
• 40:45
Didn't walk anybody or strike out anybody and has allowed four runs. So Duke will be out of there and Bob Kerley is coming on in.
• 41:00
Boy, the way things happen, I'll tell you.
• 41:05
The Yankees hit one high off the left Centifield wall. Malzahn beat out an infield single, white single to the right, and Button homered to dead Centifield.
• 41:17
So the Yankees are trailing 4-1 here in the bottom of the second inning.
• 41:25
And he's barely ready. His first pitch is high outside ball one.
• 41:43
Oh man, there's a home run. Holy, how did he hit that one? That's out of everything here. Over the bench and across the street, Jerry Castell hits his third home run.
• 41:55
I don't know how he hit that ball. It was a high fast ball and he swung up at it, and that thing just carried right on out of the park.
• 42:04
Did he hit that one? So Bob Kerley is really greeted in fine fashion. A home run by Jerry Castell, his third of the year, and his ninth run batted in.
• 42:17
Oh man, they tell me he hit one way back here early in the year the same way, right on out of the screen and out of the park.
• 42:25
Here's Pumpty Green. He takes the pitch to old ball one. And a Red Sox have scored five turns here in the bottom of the second. They lead 5-1.
• 42:39
High, barely ready now. The pitch to Green is high ball two, two or nothing.
• 42:50
We've just been paid a visit by our television director, Jack Murphy. So who's directing the show over there? You're sitting here, Murph.
• 43:00
Joe Cimilli. This is Labor Day and everybody works. There's a drive to deep right center field, way back.
• 43:08
Rattle digging, power digging, and it's in the ball plant for a home run. Oh, I'm telling you the balls are really jumping today. Pumpty Green gets his first major league home run.
• 43:22
And he really creamed it. Way over 400 feet in deep right center field in the Red Sox ball plant. His first major league home run and his sixth run batted in on the year.
• 43:36
And that's the third home run in a row. We'll have to get Pete Callison to check on what the record is for consecutive home runs in an inning.
• 43:46
That's three in a row. Budden, Castell, and Green. The Red Sox now lead six to nothing.
• 43:53
And Bob Fairley has put the two men in and they both home it. Here's Gary Geiger, who fly to left field in the first inning.
• 44:01
The curve is over strike one call. Geiger batting 256.
• 44:13
Listen to the crowd buzzing. Curve is low ball one one one. Fairley ready out on the mound.
• 44:35
One one pitch is fouled at the plate. Plate two. One ball and two strikes.
• 44:45
Three pretty good shots for home runs. Budden hit his in the center field.
• 44:50
Castell right on out of the ball clock over both fences in left field. And Pumpty Green in the bullpen in deep right center field.
• 45:04
Here's the one ball two strikes. Low curve is low. Ball two two and two.
• 45:20
Fairley takes a deep breath out on the mound.
• 45:24
Here's his two two delivery. It's up in the air to the left side. Tony Kulback the shortstop getting under it.
• 45:31
And make the catch for the first out of the inning.
• 45:39
Geiger pops to Kulback. Brings up Pete Reynolds who fly to left field in the first inning. Reynolds batting 316.
• 46:01
Curve is in the big ball one. On deck Gene Stevens.
• 46:20
Curve is low. Ball two two and nothing.
• 46:36
Two balls no strikes on pistol Pete Reynolds.
• 46:41
One out and six runs in. Pitch is hit on the ground at second base. Bobby Richardson up with it over to Howard and it's two away.
• 46:50
And here comes the ninth man to bat in this inning Gene Stevens. So when the first inning bounced to second base.
• 46:58
  Stevens is batting 263.
• 47:13
Fairley's first pitch is way inside ball one.
• 47:21
On deck Jackie Jensen who started off this inning.
• 47:32
Fairley's next pitch curve is low ball two two and nothing.
• 47:50
Here's the two nothing delivery. Swing and a line drive to right field. That's in there for base hit and extra bases.
• 47:55
Stevens around first picking for second. Bow up with the ball. And Stevens is on at second with a long double in the right field corner.
• 48:10
And that's hit number three off Fairley. There have been two homers in a double and here's Jensen who led off the inning with a tremendous double a deep left set up.
• 48:21
Jensen is now batting 277. That was his 26th double of the year. Two out and a runner at second. Six runs in the Red Sox are leading six to one.
• 48:39
Most homers in one inning by one club is four.
• 48:46
Here's the pitch to Jensen. The curve is in there strike one call. So Jackie hits one here he can tie the record.
• 48:56
Boston Detroit Boston and Boston Boston did a three time.
• 49:09
Here's a stretch by Charlie. Tied on first with a foul back strike two. Nothing into the count.
• 49:21
In the National League there were five home runs in one inning. The Giants and the Phillies did it.
• 49:31
The American League record is four.
• 49:43
Charlie stretches. Curve is hit high in the air to straight away center field. Mantle's got room for this one as he moves back under it and makes the catch even though that ball was hit real well.
• 49:56
And so for the Red Sox in the bottom of the second inning they come up with six runs.
• 50:04
Seven base hits no Yankees errors. One man left on base in the score at the end of two full innings. Boston six and the Yankees one.
• 50:29
Hello there everybody. First half of the third inning. The Red Sox leading six to one for New York.
• 50:41
Andy Carey is going to pinch it for Bob Charlie. Eli Gerber warming up the bullpen.
• 50:54
Jerry Cassell for the five run lead.
• 51:03
The Red Sox right hander all set to pinch hitter Andy Carey. The delivery swung on as a high fly ball down the left field line.
• 51:12
It is in there for a home run up into the screen for Andy Carey. Pinch hit homer. Just made the screen.
• 51:28
Andy getting his third homer ninth run batted in at sixty two.
• 51:36
That ball is hit high down the line. You had to wait to see whether it was going to go foul or not. And it hooks right into the screen.
• 51:48
Sammy Whitehouse talking to Jerry Cassell for a moment.
• 51:59
All three of Andy's homers have been against Boston. Two of them up here.
• 52:14
Hank Bauer batting two twenty nine. Five to left in the first inning. Cassell delivers. Bauer swings and sends a liner over short into left field for a base hit.
• 52:23
Button leap but couldn't get it. He had to wait for him. Bauer singles to left. And now Tony Kubeck comes up.
• 52:35
Hitting two ninety two he fly to left field in the first inning.
• 52:45
And the Red Sox bullpen gets the nod from the dugout. Mike Pornilis gets up the throw.
• 52:55
Cassell checks Bauer. The pitch to Kubeck swung on as a fly ball into right center.
• 53:02
Geiger goes over, gets under it, makes the catch. That ball is hit pretty deeply right at the edge of the bullpen.
• 53:10
One away and here comes Mantle who hits, is hitting two eighty four. Struck out in the first inning. Yogi Berra on deck.
• 53:28
Cassell gets the sign from White. Into the stretch, Bauer with the lead. The pitch to Mantle. Swung on, hit up into the air in the left field and that ball is up against the screen for a home run for Mickey Mantle.
• 53:43
It's signaled a home run by Larry Knapp. It hits the power in the screen or the guide post in the screen in left field.
• 53:57
Mantle collecting his twenty seven homer and sixty nine runs batted in. And it's now six to four.
• 54:08
The support that holds the screen up above the fence. The ball hits that and rebounded to the playing field and Larry Knapp immediately signaled homer.
• 54:22
Five home runs here in the last inning and a third. Or counting the bottom of the third and the top, bottom of the second and top of the third in the last four outs I would say.
• 54:43
Here's Yogi Berra hitting two eighty four. The delivery is in there for a strike. Berra single the right center in the second inning.
• 54:58
Mickey Hominoff to sale on August 16th. Pitch to Yogi. Yogi hits a high fly to right, not deep. Jensen's under it and makes the catch.
• 55:13
Two down and here's Elston Howard grounded his short into a double play. Six to four Boston. It's the first of the third.
• 55:39
Here's Eric you say to the wind up then comes the pitch to Howard. Outside ball one. One ball no strikes.
• 55:54
In comes the next pitch. Slung on, looped over first down the right field line for a base hit. The ball twists toward the line.
• 56:00
Howard rounds first, heads for second and goes in with a stand up double. Getting a collection of extra base hits around here today.
• 56:11
Hector Lopez coming up. Drew a walk in the second inning.
• 56:20
The Yankees have had six hits. Four of them for extra bases. Red Sox have had eight hits. Six of them for extra bases.
• 56:35
Lopez batting 284. Two men out. Cassell delivers inside. It nicked him. It nicked him on the arm and he's aboard.
• 56:55
It nicked him on the shirt somewhere. He was trying to get back and pitch it inside. It didn't hurt him. It just nicked him wherever he was.
• 57:10
Howard on second. Lopez on first with two outs in the third inning. Three runs in. Red Sox leading 64.
• 57:30
Cassell ready. Pitch to Gill. Slung on in this second.
• 57:50
Winds blowing out today. Cassell into the set. The pitch to McDougal. Slung on. A ground ball hit out short.
• 58:02
Up with it as Budden flips to Pumpty Green to Fork Lopez. And the side's retired. Three runs for New York.
• 58:12
Four hits. Two of them homers. No Red Sox errors. Two Yankees left on. At the end of two and a half innings to play, Boston six. New York four.
• 58:23
And hear this. Ballantine beer is the crisp kind of light with true Lager flavor. That's why folks call it the crisp for freshers.
• 58:33
You can't go outside, won't you? Treat your thirst to Ballantine.
• 58:43
Eli Gerber coming in to pitch in the last of the third.
• 58:53
Cassell's ready. Came on in the second inning with nobody out. Hits one inning. Gave up three hits. Two of them homers.
• 59:08
A lot of two runs. Maws give up five hits and four runs.
• 59:15
The Yankees will be home Wednesday night, Thursday afternoon with Kansas City Tigers Friday and Saturday afternoons. Doublehead over the Indians next Sunday.
• 59:24
A make up game a week from today with Cleveland on the 14th. And the White Sox are in Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons the 15th and 16th.
• 59:35
Eli Gerber, making his 15th appearance for New York, has a record of one and four. First two appearances were in release against Boston, both here in July.
• 59:47
Started against them August 15th in New York and was knocked out in the third inning.
• 59:53
  Boston won the game 12-4.
• 1:00:04
The Tigers got six runs in the fourth inning to lead Cleveland 12-4, 10-4 innings.
• 1:00:13
Six to four Boston here in the last of the third. Here's Frank Malzone at bat. White and Button to follow. Malzone hitting 279.
• 1:00:21
The pitch in there, Frank won. Frank grounded a single to short in the second inning.
• 1:00:34
Gerber to the windup again and the pitch, swung on, bounced over the head of the pitcher out over second in the center for a base hit.
• 1:00:42
Malzone holds up after the turn as Mantle field the ball, relays it back into Bobby.
• 1:00:50
Malzone opens the third with a single to center and here's Sammy White hitting 300. Having a good year, single to right in the second inning.
• 1:01:15
Gerber checks Malzone, pitch to White in there, Frank won. White has never hit 300 with the Red Sox.
• 1:01:27
Hits 282 and 281 on two occasions. Lifetime average at 261 going into the year.
• 1:01:37
So of course this is by far his best season at bat. A seasoned performer too.
• 1:01:46
Over to first, Malzone's back. Bell Baker howling, come here. Six to four Boston third inning, nobody out. The pitch, low outside, a 1-1 count.
• 1:02:15
Gerber ready. Here's the pitch and it's in there for a strike, one and two.
• 1:02:36
One ball, two strikes. Gerber studies Yogi-san. Into the stretch, Malzone leads away from first. Here's the pitch. Sammy White swings and sends the bouncer out back to second.
• 1:02:51
Two back over to Richardson for one throw to first, too late. Four side at second. Two back to Richardson. The ball has not hit too hard. Had it been hit a little harder than the base fifth, Two back had time to go back to the bag and flip to Bobby.
• 1:03:08
Two three later first was not nearly in time. Now down Budden steps in. Line to home run into the bleachers straightaway center. Was two on last inning. Batting 226.
• 1:03:23
Six four Boston third inning. Gerber delivers to Budden outside low by one.
• 1:03:52
Throw to first and White almost is caught napping.
• 1:03:59
Gerber has not yet gone into pitching position. He's trying to get the rubber and he saw White looking in and trying to get the side and threw quickly over.
• 1:04:06
Now we're ready and they pitch to Budden, swung on. Little roller hits toward third. McGoogle after her he grabs it, fires on to first and gets him.
• 1:04:13
Moving on to second is Sammy White. Howard throws on down to Richardson but White didn't make the turn.
• 1:04:22
Now here's Jerry Casale who's in a home run in the second inning. Batting 188.
• 1:04:43
Casale hit one a mile high as the expression goes and over the screen.
• 1:05:10
Gerber delivers inside for a ball. One ball no strikes.
• 1:05:28
The right hander ready and the pitch. High and inside two nothing. Sam White leads off second.
• 1:05:41
All the years I've been coming to Boston I did a little sightseeing this morning.
• 1:05:46
Did you too Joe? Yeah we ran over by Harvard University. I've been over there.
• 1:05:56
I do broadcast football games in Mississippi campus.
• 1:06:02
Here's the pitch swung on. A little roller hits slowly. McGoogle at one hand it flips on to first in time and the side's retired.
• 1:06:14
No runs, one hit, no errors, one left on.
• 1:06:18
A friend of ours here, young Peter Walt, whose grandfather used to be connected to baseball with the Washington Senators as a co-owner, left the bunker hills.
• 1:06:30
So a place where Paul Revere got the signal. This is the North Church, the tower.
• 1:06:39
Samuel Adams, what do we see with Samuel Adams? A place where he was buried, that's right, and mother and father Benjamin Franklin.
• 1:06:52
  Yeah, is that right?
• 1:06:58
A lot of things, boy. The Boston Commons, very, very wonderful city.
• 1:07:09
Got things that are old and things that are new, things that have been in great tradition.
• 1:07:16
By the way that reminds me, you know they've been brewing valentine since about 1839?
• 1:07:22
That's a long time, man, and they know how to do that. This kind of like the two log of flavor, valentine beer, the crisp perpetuity.
• 1:07:41
Baltimore 3, Washington nothing under 4 1 half innings, Kansas City, Chicago, scoreless under 2 1 half. Tigers 12, Indians 4 under 4 1 half.
• 1:07:52
Tigers beat the stadium next Friday and Saturday afternoons. Milwaukee 3, Pittsburgh 1 under 2 1 half.
• 1:08:02
Philadelphia 2, Cincinnati nothing under 3. The only other game underway at the moment. Yankees at home Wednesday night with Kansas City.
• 1:08:13
And Thursday afternoon. Tigers Friday and Saturday afternoon. The Indians next Sunday, doubleheader, make-up game next Monday.
• 1:08:21
And the White Sox Tuesday and Wednesday the 15th and 16th.
• 1:08:25
Bobby Richardson leading off, hits the first pitch over third in the left field corner. Stevens cuts the ball off neatly and Bobby is held to a single.
• 1:08:37
Bobby Richardson in the fourth inning leads off with a line single into the left field corner.
• 1:08:45
Bobby was hitting 279. Eli Gerber coming up.
• 1:09:13
The foul on deck. Malsone shortened up at third.
• 1:09:18
The pitch is bonnet foul coming all the way back down the screen.
• 1:09:27
Gerber had three for 12, getting two five oh.
• 1:09:47
There goes Richardson. Pitch is swung on and missed there. The throw down is too late.
• 1:09:51
Still in base for Richardson. Got the jump on him. Hurrying White's throw. Bobby field second.
• 1:09:59
  Pitch is a strike.
• 1:10:09
No ball, two strikes, six for Boston, fourth inning.
• 1:10:29
Derrick has sailed to the stretch. The two strike pitch swung on and foul down the third baseline.
• 1:10:48
Don't forget Yogi Berra Day, Saturday, September the 19th. The Red Sox final visit to Yankee Stadium. Friday night the 17th, Saturday and Sunday afternoons the 18th and 19th.
• 1:11:04
The pitch to Gerber swung on and missed, strike three.
• 1:11:13
One away now and here's Hank Bauer who's flying to left and singles to left.
• 1:11:36
Six for Red Sox, fourth inning.
• 1:11:44
Cassell's delivery to Hank is outside ball one.
• 1:11:49
You have Hank plenty of room in straightaway center and just a little off to the right of that. And some room along the right field line. They play him to pull.
• 1:12:07
Here's the delivery. Swung on and missed. Strike one, one and one.
• 1:12:12
Hank went for the equalizer. Mike Fornilas loosening up.
• 1:12:30
  One ball, one strike.
• 1:12:36
Here's the pitch. Swung on to a fly ball in the short center. Gary Geiger drips in under it and makes the catch.

The Yankees have picked up four runs but Cattail likewise seems to have settled down after a rather rough start.
• 1:37:33
Don Button leads off. He had a home run in the centerfield seat his first time up.
• 1:37:48
White Empire does drop home plate and Don Button moves into the batter's box.

Here's one one pitch. It's all to me and what a cut he had about one.
• 1:40:28
I'll set it off Yogi just for that one ball to strike.
• 1:40:33
He goes for broke when he swings all or nothing.
• 1:40:41
He has nine base hits on the three homers and two doubles.
• 1:40:53
One ball two strikes the count.
• 1:41:09
The wind up side on curve is right.
• 1:41:12
Try to check his swing but one around the girl to get the second strike out.
• 1:41:22
And it brings up Humpty Green who doubled and homered and then fly the left field green batting to sixty six.
• 1:41:30

Sammy White is coming back taking it to the screen and makes the catch just about a foot in front of the screen and back of the plate.
• 1:45:42
Sammy White stayed with that ball.
• 1:45:44
Remember the wind is blowing out and normally that ball would have landed on the screen but the wind blew it back onto the playing field.
• 1:45:51
White made the catch one away.
• 1:45:53
  Here's Tony Kubek.
• 1:45:54
Tony has hit the ball hard all day.
• 1:45:56
But hasn't had a base hit.
• 1:46:00

• 1:48:15
Billy Jurgis is not taking any chances.
• 1:48:18
He went a lot further with him and a lot of managers would have gone.
• 1:48:24
Because the youngster was really in trouble in the second and third innings.
• 1:48:31
But Billy went with him long enough for him to stay in and pitch real fine ball after the third inning.
• 1:48:44
Jurgis has signals for a new pitcher from the bullpen.
• 1:48:51
Bill McKinley talking with Casey Stengel now.
• 1:48:56

• 1:49:58
Walked only one man, struck out three, and has allowed four runs.
• 1:50:03
Kubek down to second is Cassell's responsibility should he score.
• 1:50:07
So Jerry cannot be the losing pitcher, but he could be the winning pitcher, which would give him his first win over the Yankees.
• 1:50:13
The youngster leaves to a nice round of applause from the Red Sox and Yankee fans alike.
• 1:50:21
  Fornelli's coming on.
• 1:50:25
The 5'11", 172 pounds from Havana, Cuba.

• 1:52:20
  Here's the stretch.
• 1:52:22
The tackle ball is inside. Two and two to count.
• 1:52:45
  Fornelli's into his stretch position.
• 1:52:48
Strike three swinging. He got him on a low sinker. Mickey went after it and didn't get it. That's his third strike out.
• 1:52:57
Of the day, Jerry Castile has struck him out twice both on third court strike.
• 1:53:03
Here's Yogi Berro who's single to fly to right and pops to second.
• 1:53:07
  Yogi batting 283.

  On deck Elston Howard.
• 1:53:27

• 1:53:51
Third court continues to loosen up.
• 1:54:03
Fornelli's pitch is hitting the ground at second base. Green was right up with it. Over to Ronalds inside for the out and Fornelli's pitch is a south relief job right there. Getting out of the jam after Kubek had doubled for the Yankees in the top of the seventh. No runs on one hit. No Red Sox errors and one man left in the score at the end of six and a half innings.
• 1:54:24
The Red Sox sixth and the Yankees fourth.
• 1:54:28
In the fourth inning we'll come up for a second time at bat. Keel was called out on strike his first time at bat.
• 1:54:38
  Left hand hitters batting 240.
• 1:54:45
He'll be followed by Pete Ronalds and Gene Stevens and if somebody should get on Jackie Jensen.

  Verber ready again.
• 1:55:52
Pitch is high outside. Ball two, two and nothing.
• 1:56:09
Two balls, no strikes. Nobody out, nobody on. We're in the bottom of the seventh.
• 1:56:17
Two nothing pitch is high ball three, three and nothing.
• 1:56:23
Indians failed to score on the bottom of the seventh so the score remains 14 for the Tigers and 12 for the Indians playing the top of the eighth inning.
• 1:56:36
Indians have bounced back from that ball game to see if they can do it again. There's a strike.
• 1:56:46
Kansas City failed to score on the top of the eighth and the White Sox are leading 2-1 playing the bottom of the eighth. Billy Pearce who has been out for quite some time with an injury.
• 1:56:54
And then they had a whole game and Ned Garver doing the pitching for Kansas City.
• 1:56:59
There's a moment in that game for the only run. There's a strike call. Full count on Marty Keel.
• 1:57:16
Ready now for the payoff pitch. Garver winds up. Check the pitches. High ball four. He lost them.
• 1:57:23
Garver with his hands on his hips and Yogi shaking his head. They thought that pitch was in there. Another pitcher for the Cleveland Indians, Gary Locke.
• 1:57:37
That's the eighth pitcher. And the record is nine. They've tied the record for the National League.
• 1:57:44
Garver has lost most pitches in one game by one club, which is eight, but the American League is nine.
• 1:57:59
Keel is on first base. Pete Reynolds who is one foot three single left his last time at bat. He flied the left and bounced the second before that.
• 1:58:09
He's batting three seventeen. Pitch is bonded. Garver up with a stop the second throw to first. He gets Reynolds, but Keel slides in safely.
• 1:58:18
The sacrifice works from the pitcher to the first baseman covering. And it brings up Gene Stevens who bounced the second double to right and fly to right.
• 1:58:27
Stevens batting two sixty-five. Billy Jurgis playing for another run.
• 1:58:36
He didn't know Reynolds was a good hitter. He didn't want to take the chance of the double play, but he's got Stevens and Jensen coming up.
• 1:58:56
One man out here on the bottom of the seventh. Gene Stevens, the left hand hitting left fielder.
• 1:59:04
Garver sits, looks back at the runner at second. Curve is lined in the center field as the base hit. Here comes Keel around third.
• 1:59:10
He'll score easily, man up with it, and the Red Sox lead seven to four. Billy Jurgis playing for that extra run. Got it.
• 1:59:18
Got it real quick too. Keel scores. Hits number three off Garver. The first run they scored off Garver. They scored four off Moss, two off Curly.
• 1:59:29
And the Red Sox lead seven to four for Stevens. His 32nd run batted in on the air. That's the second hit of the ball game.

One away. Stevens leads off first. Here's a stretch. The pitch is high, ball one, on deck, bank, mile zone.
• 2:00:16
Quick throw to first for Stevens' back. Gene had a busted leg earlier in the year. Looks like he's recovered completely.
• 2:00:26
Another throw and Stevens has a half slide back in the first base with more of a jump.
• 2:00:36
Stretch and the pitch is on the inside corner. Strike one, one, one. Throwed a quick pitch, Jensen, that time he wasn't ready.
• 2:00:48
One-on-one and count on the Red Sox slugging right field end.
• 2:01:02
Here's a stretch. The pitch is outside, ball two, two and one. Al Shroll, a big right hander up in the Red Sox bullpen now.
• 2:01:21
And Blaylock for the Yankees. Soft toss to first, Stevens' back in plenty of time.
• 2:01:35
Quick throw that time but Stevens was just about a half a step off. And Jensen steps out of the box.
• 2:01:44
Jackie doesn't want to be quick pitched again.
• 2:01:55
Here's a stretch. Pitch is fouled back out of play.
• 2:02:07
Two and two to count on Jensen.
• 2:02:27
There we got himself a new ball. Stevens leads off first. Here's a stretch. There goes Stevens. The ball is strike three.
• 2:02:37
The throw to second is not in time. Jensen is called out on strike. But Stevens steals the base.
• 2:02:49
And with two out, here's Frank Malzone who is two for three. Single is short, single is tenor and pop is second. Malzone batting 280.
• 2:02:58
Jackie, Jensen took a fast ball right down the middle. You know, it bothers some batters when a runner is stealing.
• 2:03:05
They take their eye off the pitch. The Tigers fail to score on the top of the eighth and the Indians are batting on the bottom of the eighth, leading two runs to size.
• 2:03:15
Out of score, 14 to 12. Tigers lead. Pitch is outside ball one on Malzone.
• 2:03:35
Derby checks the sign from Yogi. Stevens leading off second base. Stretch. Pitch is low. Ball two.
• 2:04:05
Derby ready now. Sidearm curve is inside. Ball three, three and nothing. On deck, Sammy White.
• 2:04:18
Malzone looks at Billy Jurgis coaching his third, hoping to get the green light and swing it out three nothing pitch.
• 2:04:26
Pitch is outside. Low ball four. Derby walks his third man as Malzone goes to first. Now with Stevens at second and two out, here's Sammy White to catch it.
• 2:04:38
Sammy's single to right in the second inning of the drive in the run. He scored a run and bounced in on a fourth play and hit in with double play. Batting 298.
• 2:04:58
Red Sox lead seven to four. We're in the bottom of the seventh.
• 2:05:11
Here's the stretch. Pitch is in there, strike one call.
• 2:05:35
Derby ready again. Malzone leading off first. Stevens off second. Two men are out.
• 2:05:45
Stretch. Pitch is low outside. Ball one, one, one.
• 2:06:06
Call the ball head popped out of the bullpen, picked up by one of the ground crew. Now we're ready to go.
• 2:06:21

• 2:07:42
The bases are loaded with two out in Nevada coming up due to the Don Budden and he's taken out for a pink hit.
• 2:07:48
Budden will hold it in the center field leashes. He's taken out for a pink hit of Vic Wirtz and while Wirtz is coming on we'll pause for station identification.
• 2:07:56
This is W-O-K-O in Albany, New York. Remember Yankee baseball is brought to you by Valentine Beer and Ale and Atlantic Refining Company and remember Jim Rayner and Troy Burek-Rounder follows today's game.
• 2:08:09
Something very unusual, Don Budden who had homered with two on in the second inning is being taken out for a pink hit of Vic Wirtz.
• 2:08:20
Wirtz batting 263 has ten doubles, seven homers and 45 runs batted in. The bases are loaded with two out and the Red Sox leading in the ball game seven to four.
• 2:08:31
Means we'll have a new shortstop for the Red Sox. Eli Gerber can pitch from his windup now. Here is the windup.
• 2:08:40
Hector Wirtz is low ball one. Stevens is at third now zone is second. And it is, bounces over Lopez's head one run in, two runs in. Here comes Sammy White, the throw to the plate is not in time and Vic Wirtz clears the bases.
• 2:09:01
How do you like that for a pink hitter? Vic Wirtz hits one to the left center field, bounded high off the scoreboard. Back over Hector Lopez's head before Mantle's relay throw.
• 2:09:12
Three runners have scored. And Vic Wirtz is coming out of the ball game after clearing the bases with that double.
• 2:09:22
And the Red Sox now lead in the ball game ten to four and they've scored all ten runs in just two innings, six in the second and four here in the bottom of the seventh.
• 2:09:39
Mahoney who will go into play short for the Red Sox in place of Budden is out there running for Vic Wirtz.
• 2:09:48
And here is the pitcher Mike Fornelis. He swings and misses a curve. Strike one.
• 2:09:59
Man that eighth spot in the batting order for the Red Sox has been real potent. Don Budden had a homer in three RBIs and Wirtz had a double in three RBIs.
• 2:10:11
The curve is hit on the ground and short. Two back up with it. Over to Howard in time for the hours.
• 2:10:18
As eight men go to bat that inning for the Red Sox, they come up with four runs on just two base hits.
• 2:10:29
Three walks by Gerber very instrumental in that big inning. No Yankee errors and one man left the score at the end of seven full innings. The Red Sox ten and the Yankees four.
• 2:10:43
The Red Sox lead by six as we go to the top of the eighth inning.
• 2:10:52
Yankees following a day off tomorrow meet Kansas City Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon. Friday and Saturday the Tigers are in.
• 2:11:02
Then a doubleheader against Cleveland on Sunday, a make up game on Monday.
• 2:11:08
And the White Sox climax the final Eastern trip of the Western Club as they're in Tuesday the 15th and Wednesday the 16th.
• 2:11:25
Here's Ellie Howard. Mike Cornelis-Pitch inside ball one.
• 2:11:33
He's over two. Cleveland batting in the bottom of the ninth.
• 2:11:41
Trailing by two runs 14 to 12. Here's the pitch.
• 2:11:46
Line drives Powell into the left field seats and the count is one ball and one strike.
• 2:11:52
Helston batting 279. Red Sox ten Yankees four.
• 2:12:12
The Tigers hit on the ground slowly to short. Mahoney up with it. I thought a first he's out just is out.
• 2:12:22
Mahoney took a lot of time waiting for that ball to come down and took his time throwing the first and almost pulled Ronald off the bat.
• 2:12:30
The Yankees tried them out with a ground ball. Here's Hector Lopez who walks hit by a pitch ball and flies to left batting 284.
• 2:12:52
  Curve is outside ball one.
• 2:13:06
Cornelis next pitch is low outside ball two two and nothing. On deck Gil McDougal.
• 2:13:24
Two nothing pitch is low outside ball three. Three and nothing to count.
• 2:13:41
Three nothing pitch is low ball four. Lopez walks. And that'll bring up Gil McDougal.
• 2:13:56
Gil tripled Boston with fourth play and hit back to the pitcher batting 237.
• 2:14:02
Bill McKinley is throwing somebody out of the game. Let's see is it Casey Stengel or who is it? Somebody is being drawn out of the game.
• 2:14:13
And look at Casey Casey is mad boy he's following McKinley all around. He wants McKinley to stop and talk with him.
• 2:14:21
Casey Stengel we haven't seen Casey do this in a long time he's out of the game. Man look at Casey go.
• 2:14:32
Boy he won't let McKinley get away. He's following him all over the park and arguing.
• 2:14:42
Boy Casey is really hot and look at McKinley. I've never seen McKinley this mad before.
• 2:14:49
Evidently Casey's been getting on McKinley all through the game.
• 2:14:58
Boy Casey really really was mad and so was McKinley. And Stengel is ejected from the ballpark.
• 2:15:15
And Stengel professor really blew his sack that time.
• 2:15:26
And now the ball is transated up. Casey is out of the yard. Here's the pitch for McJugger. It's not far out of play strike one.
• 2:15:49
McJugger with one away the pitch is low outside ball one one one.
• 2:16:06
One ball one strike and one out. The stretch in the pitch is low inside ball two two and one.
• 2:16:31
Red Sox 10 Yankees four we're in the top of the eighth inning.
• 2:16:36
Pitch is lying in the center field right at Marty Keele. Boy he hit that ball right on the nose.
• 2:16:44
But it's two away and here's Bobby Richardson.
• 2:16:51
The White Sox won their ball game two to one. Billy Pierce picks himself a fine seven hitter. Garva picks an eight hitter.
• 2:17:03
Baltimore shut out Washington seven to nothing. We'll give you a final run down the score at the end of this inning.
• 2:17:10
Here's Bobby Richardson who lined a center single left and double a left center. He's also stolen the base.
• 2:17:17
He takes the curve over strike one call batting two eighty one.
• 2:17:31
The stretch and the curve is low ball one one one. Two men are out.
• 2:17:48
The pitch is low. No it's not. It's strike two call. One ball two strikes.
• 2:18:08
The ball nearly sets. Ball bounced way in front of home plate blocked by Sammy White two and two to count.
• 2:18:18
The runners did not advance. The runner did not advance. Hector Lopez at first.
• 2:18:24
Two out two balls two strikes. Boston ten and the Yankees four.
• 2:18:34
One run foul outside of third.

They won something like thirty two one run games this year. Boy that makes a big difference.
• 2:18:59
The pitch is swung at a missed strike three. Got him in a high inside fastball.
• 2:19:05
So the Yankees in the top of the eighth. No runs no hits no Red Sox errors and one man left.
• 2:19:10
Score at the end of seven and a half innings. Boston ten and the Yankees four.
• 2:19:16
Jim Bunning has just gone in for the Detroit Tigers in the last of the ninth so it could be that the Indians trailing by two have something going.
• 2:19:25
A ball game that's the Indians come from a twelve to four deficit to tie the score at twelve twelve and then Eddie Yost hit a two run homer to make it fourteen to twelve.
• 2:19:35
But the Indians in the last of the ninth may have something going and will of course keep you up to date on that one.
• 2:19:49
Jerry Blaylock has come on the pitch for the Yankees as we go to the bottom of the eighth with Johnny Blanchard in there replacing Yogi Berra.
• 2:20:02
Incidentally when Bunning went in in the ninth inning that ties a record in the American League for most pitchers used by both clubs a total of twelve.
• 2:20:12
The Indians used eight and the Tigers four. White Sox defeated the Kansas City A's two to one and so the Cleveland ballgame is of vital importance to Cleveland.
• 2:20:26
Just barely holding on in the remains of the American Lake Panadri.
• 2:20:33
All right Billy. Austin 10 Yankees four.
• 2:20:52
Gary Blaylock first pitch is a slow curve that's lower ball one. Derbys struck out green on a change of curve. Maybe the Yankees are trying to find something out for next year.

• 2:21:41

• 2:25:26
Looked like he didn't have a chance to come up with a ball.
• 2:25:30
He slapped out at the last second and tried to knock it to Richardson just couldn't do it.
• 2:25:35
Both stopped and back at second base. Runners at first and second now with one out and here's Gene Stevens who has singled and doubled.

• 2:28:24
Both runners go back they were going it was a bad ball and Stevens tried to duck back out of the way.
• 2:28:30
Just as thick as that. Blanchard held on to the ball both runners would have had a stolen base they had good jump.
• 2:28:45
Here they go the ball is taken low ball four.
• 2:28:52
The bases are loaded and here comes Jackie Jensen. Jensen double fly to right walks and struck out batting 276.
