Speaker 1: Bible Study Podcast continues the study of the book of
• 0:11
Speaker 1: Exodus with Chapter 36. Welcome to the Bible Study Podcast.
• 0:23
Speaker 1: I'm your host, Chris Christensen. We're going to continue on
• 0:26
Speaker 1: with Chapter 36, which is going to talk about the
• 0:28
Speaker 1: building of the tabernacle. But first, a word from this sponsor.
• 0:33
Speaker 1: Exodus 36, so Bezalel, Oholiab, and every skilled person to
• 0:39
Speaker 1: whom the Lord had given skill and ability to know
• 0:41
Speaker 1: how to carry out the work of constructing the sanctuary
• 0:44
Speaker 1: are to do the work just as the Lord has commanded.
• 0:47
Speaker 1: Then Moses summoned Bezalel and Oholiab and every skilled person
• 0:52
Speaker 1: to whom the Lord had given ability and who was
• 0:54
Speaker 1: willing to come and do the work. They received from
• 0:57
Speaker 1: Moses all the offerings the Israelites had brought to carry
• 1:00
Speaker 1: out the work of constructing the sanctuary. And the people
• 1:03
Speaker 1: continued to bring freewill offerings morning after morning. So all
• 1:07
Speaker 1: the skilled workers who were doing all the work on
• 1:09
Speaker 1: the sanctuary left what they were doing and said to Moses,
• 1:12
Speaker 1: the people are bringing more than enough for doing the
• 1:15
Speaker 1: work the Lord commanded to be done. Then Moses gave
• 1:18
Speaker 1: an order and they sent this word throughout the camp.
• 1:21
Speaker 1: No man or woman is to make anything else as
• 1:23
Speaker 1: an offering for the sanctuary. And so the people were
• 1:26
Speaker 1: restrained from bringing more because they already had more than
• 1:30
Speaker 1: enough to do all the work. I assume that many
• 1:34
Speaker 1: of you would love if your next stewardship opportunity at
• 1:38
Speaker 1: your church, you had to do this announcement with it,
• 1:41
Speaker 1: just stop, stop giving. We've got enough. We don't need
• 1:46
Speaker 1: any more. That is often not where we find ourselves.
• 1:50
Speaker 1: And yet this is where the people of Israel found
• 1:53
Speaker 1: themselves with this work. They're about to start the construction
• 1:56
Speaker 1: of all these things that Moses has been up on
• 1:58
Speaker 1: the mountain twice getting instructions for. And the outpouring of
• 2:04
Speaker 1: the offering is more than enough. And isn't that a
• 2:08
Speaker 1: good way to start? And we're going to do this
• 2:11
Speaker 1: at a pretty fast clip because we've already had all
• 2:14
Speaker 1: the instructions of how to build these pieces, so it's
• 2:18
Speaker 1: not a lot new in this next section. The tabernacle.
• 2:22
Speaker 1: All those who were skilled among the workers made the
• 2:24
Speaker 1: tabernacle with ten curtains of finely twisted linen and blue, purple,
• 2:29
Speaker 1: and scarlet yarn with cherubim woven into them by expert hands.
• 2:34
Speaker 1: All the curtains were the same size, 28 cubits long
• 2:38
Speaker 1: and four cubits wide. They joined five of the curtains
• 2:41
Speaker 1: together and did the same with the other five. Then
• 2:45
Speaker 1: they made loops of blue material along the edge of
• 2:48
Speaker 1: the end curtain in one set and the same was
• 2:51
Speaker 1: done with the end curtain in the other set. They
• 2:54
Speaker 1: also made 50 loops on one curtain and 50 loops
• 2:57
Speaker 1: on on the end curtain of the other set with
• 3:00
Speaker 1: the loops opposite each other. Then they made 50 gold
• 3:03
Speaker 1: clasps and used them to fasten the two sets of
• 3:06
Speaker 1: curtains together so that the tabernacle was a unit. They
• 3:10
Speaker 1: made curtains of goat hair for the tent over the tabernacle,
• 3:14
Speaker 1: 11 all together. All 11 curtains were the same size,
• 3:17
Speaker 1: 30 cubits long and 4 cubits wide. They joined five
• 3:21
Speaker 1: of the curtains in one set and the other six
• 3:23
Speaker 1: into another set. Then they made 50 loops along the
• 3:27
Speaker 1: edge of the end curtain in one set, and also
• 3:30
Speaker 1: along the edge of the end curtain in the other set.
• 3:33
Speaker 1: They made 50 bronze clasps to fasten the tent together
• 3:38
Speaker 1: as a unit. Then they made for the tent a
• 3:40
Speaker 1: covering of ram skins dyed red, and over that a
• 3:44
Speaker 1: covering of the other durable leather. They made upright frames
• 3:49
Speaker 1: of acacia wood for the tabernacle, Each frame was 10
• 3:53
Speaker 1: cubits long and a cubit and a half wide, with
• 3:56
Speaker 1: two projections set parallel to each other. They made all
• 3:58
Speaker 1: the frames of the tabernacle in this way. They made
• 4:01
Speaker 1: 20 frames for the south end of the tabernacle and
• 4:04
Speaker 1: made 40 silver bases to go under them, two bases
• 4:08
Speaker 1: for each frame, one under each projection. For the other side,
• 4:13
Speaker 1: the north side of the tabernacle, they made 20 frames
• 4:16
Speaker 1: and 40 silver bases, two under each frame. They made
• 4:19
Speaker 1: six frames for the far end, that is, the west
• 4:22
Speaker 1: end of the tabernacle, and two frames were made for
• 4:25
Speaker 1: the corners of the tabernacle at the far end. At
• 4:28
Speaker 1: these two corners, the frames were doubled from the bottom
• 4:32
Speaker 1: all the way to the top and fitted into a
• 4:33
Speaker 1: single ring. Both were made alike, so there were eight
• 4:37
Speaker 1: frames and 16 bases, two under each frame. They also
• 4:41
Speaker 1: made crossbars of acacia wood, five for the frames on
• 4:45
Speaker 1: one side of the tabernacle, five for those on the
• 4:47
Speaker 1: other side, and five for the frames on the west
• 4:50
Speaker 1: at the far end of the tabernacle. They made the
• 4:53
Speaker 1: center crossbar so that it extended from end to end
• 4:56
Speaker 1: at the middle of the frames. They overlaid the frames
• 4:58
Speaker 1: with gold and made gold rings to hold the crossbars.
• 5:02
Speaker 1: They also overlaid the crossbars with gold. They made the
• 5:05
Speaker 1: curtain of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn and finely twisted linen,
• 5:10
Speaker 1: with cherubim woven into it by a skilled worker. They
• 5:13
Speaker 1: made four posts of acacia wood for it and overlaid
• 5:15
Speaker 1: them with gold. They made gold hooks for them... and
• 5:18
Speaker 1: cast their four silver bases. For the entrance to the tent,
• 5:22
Speaker 1: they made a curtain of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn,
• 5:24
Speaker 1: and finely twisted linen, the work of an embroiderer, and
• 5:28
Speaker 1: they made five posts with hooks for them. They overlaid
• 5:30
Speaker 1: the tops of the posts and their bands with gold,
• 5:33
Speaker 1: and made their five bases of bronze. I would encourage
• 5:37
Speaker 1: you to look online for what a picture is of
• 5:41
Speaker 1: what we're building here, or if you've ever had a
• 5:45
Speaker 1: chance to be in a nomad camp, If you've had
• 5:48
Speaker 1: a chance, for instance, to be in Wadi Rum, if
• 5:50
Speaker 1: you had a chance to be there in Jordan and
• 5:53
Speaker 1: sleep in a nomad camp, this kind of reminds me
• 5:55
Speaker 1: of that where the walls of the compound were fabric.
• 6:02
Speaker 1: And they had poles up every once in a while,
• 6:04
Speaker 1: so they're going to have that sort of outer ring
• 6:06
Speaker 1: of fabric and then the inner tent of the sanctuary.
• 6:09
Speaker 1: And it's not that dissimilar, except for all the gold,
• 6:13
Speaker 1: for the way the nomad camps were built for generations.
• 6:16
Speaker 1: except in this case, it's going to be their church,
• 6:20
Speaker 1: their temple, their tabernacle. I'm going to continue on here
• 6:24
Speaker 1: because this is not the most interesting part of the book,
• 6:27
Speaker 1: and we're going to make some other things here. The Ark.
• 6:30
Speaker 1: Bazalel made the Ark of Acacia Wood, two and a
• 6:33
Speaker 1: half cubits long, a cubit and a half wide, and
• 6:36
Speaker 1: a cubit and a half high. He overlaid it with
• 6:39
Speaker 1: pure gold, both inside and out, and made gold molding
• 6:41
Speaker 1: around it. He cast four rings for it and fastened
• 6:44
Speaker 1: them to its four feet, with two rings on one
• 6:47
Speaker 1: side and two rings on the other. Then he made
• 6:50
Speaker 1: poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold. And
• 6:53
Speaker 1: he inserted the poles into the rings on the sides
• 6:55
Speaker 1: of the ark to carry it. He made the atonement
• 6:58
Speaker 1: cover of pure gold, two and a half cubits long
• 7:01
Speaker 1: and a cubit and a half wide. Then he made
• 7:03
Speaker 1: two cherubim out of hammered gold at the ends of
• 7:05
Speaker 1: the cover. He made one cherub on one end and
• 7:08
Speaker 1: the second cherub on the other. And at the two ends,
• 7:12
Speaker 1: he made them of one piece with the cover. The
• 7:15
Speaker 1: cherubim had their wings spread upward, overshadowing the cover with them.
• 7:19
Speaker 1: The cherubim faced each other, looking toward the cover. You've
• 7:24
Speaker 1: probably seen a picture of these two cherubs on top
• 7:27
Speaker 1: of this box that is the Ark. Not to be
• 7:30
Speaker 1: confused with the Ark of Noah. This is the Ark
• 7:32
Speaker 1: of the Covenant. And you have these poles because you
• 7:35
Speaker 1: remember you're not supposed to touch the Ark. In fact,
• 7:37
Speaker 1: someone will die later on in the Book of Kings
• 7:41
Speaker 1: because as they're moving the Ark, it starts to fall,
• 7:44
Speaker 1: and so he reaches up to touch the Ark and
• 7:47
Speaker 1: to steady it and dies. And so you have these
• 7:50
Speaker 1: pulls so you don't have to touch the Ark. Don't
• 7:53
Speaker 1: touch the Ark. The table. They made the table of
• 7:56
Speaker 1: acacia wood two cubits long, a cubit wide, and a
• 7:58
Speaker 1: cubit and a half high. Then they overlaid it with
• 8:01
Speaker 1: pure gold and made a gold molding around it. They
• 8:04
Speaker 1: also made around it a rim a hand breadth wide
• 8:09
Speaker 1: and put a gold molding on the rim. They cast
• 8:11
Speaker 1: four gold rings for the table and fastened them to
• 8:14
Speaker 1: the four corners where the four legs were. The rings
• 8:17
Speaker 1: were put close to the rim to hold the poles
• 8:19
Speaker 1: used to carry the table. The poles for carrying the
• 8:22
Speaker 1: table were made of acacia wood and were overlaid with gold.
• 8:25
Speaker 1: And they made from pure gold the articles for the table,
• 8:28
Speaker 1: its plates and dishes and bowls and its pitchers for
• 8:31
Speaker 1: the pouring out of drink offerings. The lampstand. They made
• 8:35
Speaker 1: the lampstand of pure gold. They hammered out its base
• 8:38
Speaker 1: and shaft and made its flower-like cups, buds and blossoms
• 8:42
Speaker 1: of one piece with them. Six branches extended from the
• 8:45
Speaker 1: side of the lampstand, three on one side and three
• 8:48
Speaker 1: on the other. Three cups shaped like an almond, flowers
• 8:51
Speaker 1: with buds and blossoms were on one branch, three on
• 8:54
Speaker 1: the next branch, and all the same for all six
• 8:57
Speaker 1: branches extending from the lampstand. And on the lampstand were
• 9:01
Speaker 1: four cups shaped like almond flowers, with buds and blossoms.
• 9:04
Speaker 1: One bud was under the first pair of branches extending
• 9:07
Speaker 1: from the lampstand, a second bud under the second pair,
• 9:10
Speaker 1: and a third bud under the third pair, six branches
• 9:13
Speaker 1: in all. The buds and the branches were all placed
• 9:16
Speaker 1: of one piece with the lampstand, hammered out of pure gold.
• 9:21
Speaker 1: They made its seven lamps, as well as its wick, trimmers,
• 9:24
Speaker 1: and trays of pure gold. They made the lampstand with
• 9:27
Speaker 1: all its accessories from one talent of pure gold. So, Remember, again,
• 9:32
Speaker 1: we've got cubits and talents here. A cubit is roughly
• 9:36
Speaker 1: the length from your fingertips to your elbow, about a
• 9:39
Speaker 1: foot and a half. And then in terms of a
• 9:42
Speaker 1: talent of gold, that is a weight of gold, about
• 9:46
Speaker 1: 75 pounds or 34 kilograms, or rather a lot of gold.
• 9:52
Speaker 1: The altar of incense. They made the altar of incense
• 9:54
Speaker 1: out of acacia wood. It was square, a cubit long,
• 9:57
Speaker 1: and a cubit wide, and two cubits high. It's horned.
• 10:00
Speaker 1: of one piece with it. They overlaid the top and
• 10:03
Speaker 1: all the sides and the horns with pure gold and
• 10:05
Speaker 1: made a gold molding around it. They made two gold
• 10:08
Speaker 1: rings below the molding, two on each of the opposite
• 10:11
Speaker 1: sides to hold the poles used to carry it. They
• 10:14
Speaker 1: made the poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold.
• 10:17
Speaker 1: They also made the sacred anointing oil and the pure
• 10:20
Speaker 1: fragrant incense, the work of a perfumer. And we're going
• 10:24
Speaker 1: to stop there here with the things they're making. We
• 10:26
Speaker 1: have a couple more things for them to make that
• 10:29
Speaker 1: we're going to talk about next time. But with that,
• 10:32
Speaker 1: we're going to end this episode of the Bible Study Podcast.
