Latest / Spiders Sound Off / Episode 22: You Belong With Me (At the Robins Center)
Transcript
- 0:07Hello everybody. Welcome back to Spider Sound,
- 0:10OP. This is Tom and this is.
- 0:12Porter. And we are here to record a
- 0:16preview episode of some weekend games.
- 0:19Also talk about our game during the week.
- 0:22I don't know about you, Porter, but I'm feeling 22.
- 0:25This is our 22nd episode. It is Taylor Swift weekend in
- 0:29the Robin Center. There's a lot to talk about now.
- 0:32I've been travelling for work, so I miss both games.
- 0:36So we're going to really lean on Porter's expertise.
- 0:38Porter, you went to the Robin Center.
- 0:39You kind of lived in the Robin Center this week.
- 0:41I did. How was your experience?
- 0:44Man it's a good time to be a spider fan. 2 great results out
- 0:47of the Robin center. First, let me start with the
- 0:50ladies game if I could, because that was the earlier 1.
- 0:52So Temple yeah, I'll start with the Robertson experience.
- 0:56I I made the decision and that was a decision actually to go
- 1:04where I probably shouldn't have gone.
- 1:06And that is to and that is to try out the BBQ sandwich after
- 1:10your rather tepid review of its quality.
- 1:15And I got to tell you, they have not improved it, Tom, they have
- 1:18not improved it. It's not that the BBQ itself is
- 1:21bad. It's actually fine for arena
- 1:23BBQ, although it's not, you know, one of your premium
- 1:26barbecues in in town like AZZQ, but it's the bun.
- 1:31The bun is just not thick enough to sustain that BBQ that you're
- 1:34putting on it. You need a, you need a thicker,
- 1:37more like a brioche bun. Hold up or else it's just going
- 1:39to completely liquefy at the bottom, which is what happened
- 1:42to my BBQ sandwich flavour. Good bun, not good.
- 1:45So I agree with you, it's a in the C range at best.
- 1:47It's got. Kind of mushy.
- 1:49It got kind of mushy. My I had two friends join me at
- 1:53the Robin Center for the ladies game.
- 1:55One I'll call a train who had the hot dog and gave it four
- 1:57stars out of five. Yeah, he actually enjoyed the
- 1:59hot dog. And then of course, the
- 2:02legendary D Hall drove two hours and 15 minutes through DC
- 2:06traffic to come down to watch, you know, the Maggie Dugan show
- 2:10in the Robbins Center, and then drove an hour and 45 minutes
- 2:12back after the game. So I give him mad props for the
- 2:14fan of the game 'cause he he crushed it to come out and see
- 2:17that. Is that his?
- 2:17First women's basketball game, I guess, since, you know, he can
- 2:21remember. He came last year.
- 2:22He did come on. Yeah, OK, great, he said a
- 2:24couple times last year So but he was he was excited to be there.
- 2:27He didn't get any food. He did not get any food, but we
- 2:29both enjoyed a Falcon smash. The Falcon is back.
- 2:32And it was let me of props to the to the Robin center to the
- 2:37program for getting craft beer at the ladies game.
- 2:39That was fantastic. So thank you for that guys.
- 2:43That was great. More people than just you and
- 2:45your buddies got beer. Do you see some other beers out
- 2:47there? Well, actually your wife was
- 2:49there. She had a beer too, so that's
- 2:51nice. We get sales, so they keep it.
- 2:52I had a friend that I know that was with me and I bought him a
- 2:55beer. So yeah, there was more people
- 2:57than just the two of us getting beers or the three of us getting
- 2:59beers. So yeah, there was some beers.
- 3:00Nice. Yeah, for sure.
- 3:03But let me talk for a second about the game itself.
- 3:05And I'm going to turn Sirius on our audience for just a second,
- 3:10so. We need some music for this We.
- 3:12Probably should have had if we were doing audio only you'd have
- 3:15some music here, but this is video so well, I can.
- 3:18Add it later. I'll tell you this, what I saw
- 3:22at the Robin Center against Temple was one of the greatest
- 3:27single game performances by a player that I've seen in my 30
- 3:30years as a Spider fan. Maggie Dugan had 31 points, 14
- 3:34rebounds, 9 assists, 5. Five of those 9 assists were
- 3:37three pointers, which means she was either she either scored or
- 3:40created 54 of our 72 points at 75% of our scoring flowed
- 3:46through Maggie Dugan. Just an insane performance.
- 3:52Now I'm going to give you a couple numbers.
- 3:54The first number is 1212 is the number of times we get to see
- 3:59Maggie play in the Robin Center again.
- 4:02That's it. 12 more games and she's done as a spider.
- 4:05There are some Henrico games, but just talk about the Robin
- 4:08Center. 12 more games. Give me another.
- 4:10Another attendant. Another #1233.
- 4:13That was the attendance that was announced. 12133 people.
- 4:17That is not nearly good enough for what we put on the floor.
- 4:20And I know the folks who are listening to this podcast are
- 4:22going because they're they're the loyal, they're the deep
- 4:24spider fans that we have. But 12133 people for a player of
- 4:29this caliber and a team of this caliber is just not enough
- 4:31folks. I will a.
- 4:32Side note, I saw a tweet that said it was talking about
- 4:35women's basketball and it used numbers like that, and it said
- 4:38Fordham's men's team is averaging under 800 per game.
- 4:41Oh wow. Yeah, that's not good.
- 4:43That's not good. I'm going to give you a couple
- 4:45more things, more numbers. I'm going to give you a couple
- 4:46more things to think about, guys.
- 4:48So Della Don was the greatest player to play at the University
- 4:53of Delaware's, great WNBA player.
- 4:55Caitlin Clark was the greatest player to play at Iowa, great
- 4:58NBA player. They're Maggie Nugan is not
- 5:01those guys. She's not of that caliber, I
- 5:03don't think Maybe she'll get there one day.
- 5:04She's not right now, but she is the greatest Richmond women's
- 5:08spider basketball player of all time.
- 5:11I'm I'm ready to her anoint her of that.
- 5:13And I and I give respect to Pam Bryant because that would be the
- 5:15logical, you know, person you would argue with me over.
- 5:19You know, they both have two NCAA tournaments under their
- 5:21belt. You know, Maggie wanted game.
- 5:23I'm I'm assuming that Maggie stays healthy this year when I
- 5:26say that, but if she stays healthy, there's just no
- 5:27question she's going to go down as the greatest.
- 5:29I do want to push you on the other side like I I-1.
- 5:34Like, can Maggie stop teasing us with this triple double?
- 5:36Like, how many times has she come close to the triple double?
- 5:39She's she's teasing us with that.
- 5:41It's coming. Yeah, but I saw another stat.
- 5:44So if you look at rebounds, assists and points, top 20 in
- 5:48women's basketball, she's the only player in all three
- 5:51categories. You just stole my Thunder.
- 5:53Who gave you to put that out? Somebody put that out before I
- 5:55said it. Yeah, yeah, you weren't the
- 5:56first I. Actually did some research.
- 5:57Yeah, she's she's in the top 20 in all three categories, the
- 6:00only player in the country to be to be in the top. 20 and I'm not
- 6:03saying she's going to be the best.
- 6:04You know, if if you want to talk to Caitlin Clark as you know,
- 6:06maybe when her career is over, is she one of the greatest
- 6:09women's players ever? Like I'm not putting Mag in that
- 6:11category but like she has taken her game to a whole nother level
- 6:16than it was. Last year.
- 6:18Incredible. And that's not like, hey, now
- 6:20she's like even a better A10 player.
- 6:22Like, I think she's one of the top ten players in the country.
- 6:24So what can you, the fan who listens to this podcast, do?
- 6:28Take a friend to the game. Just tell somebody about it.
- 6:31Get them out there. I, I had a couple of people join
- 6:33me. This, this trip or this, this
- 6:35time around, expose some people to just how good this product
- 6:38is. Man, I'm telling you, you don't
- 6:40have to be a women's college basketball fan to love what's
- 6:43going on. You just have to be a basketball
- 6:45fan. It's some of the best basketball
- 6:46you'll see and you'll absolutely love it.
- 6:49And I think if you're trying to like, you know, if you've
- 6:51invited your friends and you're like, what else can I do to
- 6:54promote Spider basketball? Like you can fund us to go to
- 6:58Cancun next. Week.
- 6:59Oh wow. Yeah, we're still looking for a
- 7:01couple business sponsors, maybe to sponsor an episode or two.
- 7:03It doesn't. Have to be a business.
- 7:04Doesn't have to be a business. That's true, individuals.
- 7:06Sell out to anybody. Individuals, we will, we will,
- 7:08we will promote your product. You know, you know, you know, we
- 7:11like the Falcon smash. So we'll, we'll put the same
- 7:13effort in on your product. So tell me about the Temple game
- 7:16some I mean so yeah, I know you were a little nervous when we
- 7:19recorded last time like Temple's having a good season.
- 7:21Yeah, they're they're program on on the rise I.
- 7:24Did put on the message board, in the ladies message board, 'cause
- 7:26there's a separate one for women's out there that that we
- 7:29would win 80 to 67. So I was pretty close actually.
- 7:31I think we won by 15. I said 13.
- 7:34I just felt like, you know, we had the depth in the homecourt
- 7:37advantage. We were going to, we were going
- 7:38to win that game. It was closer than I thought it
- 7:40would be. Actually.
- 7:41In the third quarter, Temple was scratching and clawing.
- 7:43They got back to one point. That's the same way they played
- 7:46George Mason When they won. I felt really nervous actually.
- 7:49I was worried that we might actually not come away with a
- 7:51win. Well, we live that Georgetown
- 7:53game last year, right? That was a as we that we just
- 7:55couldn't get away. Couldn't put them away.
- 7:58And then, you know, Kayla Turner, she's first team all
- 8:01American Conference. Their guard is was just
- 8:04unstoppable. I mean, we had a hard time, you
- 8:08know, slowing her down and, and the second-half the coach made a
- 8:11move that I, I, I didn't know how it would go, but it actually
- 8:14turned out to be brilliant, which is he put Rayne Wright on
- 8:18her and Rayne Wright's a lot taller than their five, five
- 8:21star guard. And I didn't think she was going
- 8:23to be quick enough to keep up. But you know what, She fought
- 8:25through the screens better than everybody else who was trying to
- 8:27cover her and she her length at the perimeter made it harder for
- 8:31her to get off that 3 point shot and.
- 8:33I think it's the shoes. The shoes.
- 8:35That they were, I mean, they were moving so fast, you could
- 8:37wear like a yellow blur on the on the court, on the court.
- 8:40But was Rain Wright's best game? I mean, you know, to young kids
- 8:42who are looking to get into college basketball and play, I
- 8:45mean, there's two ways you could be a really star offensive
- 8:47player, but you can also play unbelievable lockdown defense.
- 8:50And I think Rayne Wright showed us that she could be an
- 8:51unbelievable lockdown defender for us long.
- 8:53Term. The one thing I liked on some of
- 8:55the highlights in in the stats is that our center combined had
- 9:0210 rebounds. OK, so not a lot of points, but
- 9:06I think if the if, if our center combination can do 10 rebounds a
- 9:09game, like that's all we need with the offensive firepower we
- 9:13have. Elsewhere, I think coach
- 9:15complimented him in the post game too, talked about the what
- 9:17he was getting out of the five. And I guess 3 played because we
- 9:20had both both transfers. Yeah, that's right, Skylar
- 9:22played some. Skylar played some, yeah.
- 9:24So that was great. Yeah.
- 9:25It was overall a great game. It was the Maggie Dugan show.
- 9:28She took over in the in the third quarter and never we never
- 9:31looked back. And it was just fun to fun to be
- 9:33there and, and and see that and knowing that I I got 12 more
- 9:37games to watch it. I am.
- 9:38I was just I was just really excited and it was it was a
- 9:41fantastic, fantastic game for Maggie.
- 9:43I can't say enough good things about her.
- 9:45And and it's not to say that the other ladies didn't play well.
- 9:47We the team played well around her, but it really was her her
- 9:51shining game so far this. Year, Yeah.
- 9:53Well, congratulations to the team.
- 9:54They had a really tough schedule to start in terms of lots of
- 9:57games, not a lot of rest. They now get a little bit of a
- 9:59break next game Sunday. I don't.
- 10:01Know if you're gonna call Navy A?
- 10:02Break well I I mean a break and get in days they have a they are
- 10:05they have a 2 with the Tuesday game and then a Sunday game.
- 10:08That's the most a bye week so they get some time to rest their
- 10:11bodies, which they need. You did the Gardner Webb scout,
- 10:13I did the Navy scout. So hold on until.
- 10:15We get to that, Yeah. I don't mean Navy's a break by
- 10:17any means. It's just more of they've got
- 10:19some time. They haven't had any time to
- 10:20really rest and what we've seen is a starting five that's
- 10:25putting up lots of minutes. So they they, they need the rest
- 10:29and Maggie is always getting beat up and fouled a lot so.
- 10:32We're going to need to give her we're going to need the Taylor
- 10:34Swift crowd to to help keep these ladies riding high going
- 10:38into the Thanksgiving Day break cuz this is a good team.
- 10:40We're. Playing OK, so Tuesday game and
- 10:42then you get to go back Wednesday, Back Wednesday.
- 10:44BMI, the men's team, Yeah. How'd that go?
- 10:47Most complete performance out of our men yet.
- 10:49I mean, it was a dominating performance from opening tip
- 10:52till the closing whistle. We we were better at every
- 10:57position than VMI and it showed. And it's the kind of win that
- 11:02you expect a team that we would want to be getting better to put
- 11:07up against a team like VMI. And it's not to say that we're,
- 11:10you know, I'm not calling anything like we're the greatest
- 11:13yet we've played, you know, 4 bad teams were four and O.
- 11:16But I will say this, what happened against VMI gives me
- 11:20hope that the team is actually getting better and better and
- 11:24we're stacking wins as we talked about in an earlier episode.
- 11:28And I think the team appears to be buying into this win first
- 11:32mentality, even if it means playing less minutes because
- 11:35man, we played twelve. I think 12 people double digit
- 11:38minutes or something like that. No, 10 people.
- 11:40No, no, 12 people, double digit minutes.
- 11:42We had 12 people score in the game.
- 11:44Yeah, Congrats to Kirby Mooney with.
- 11:46His first bucket. First basket.
- 11:47And Will Harper's first basket, too.
- 11:50Harper had a couple threes. I saw he did.
- 11:52Yeah, he looked, he looked good. So we had 50 points from the
- 11:55bench. We shot 50% from three.
- 11:57That was one of my questions for Coach Mooney after the game.
- 12:00In the post game press conference, I asked him if you
- 12:03know, you know, he's a really good, he's had teams that are
- 12:05really good 3 point shooters. This team so far through 3 grams
- 12:08had not shot the three well and all of a sudden we go 50% from
- 12:11BMI. Was the result positive to be
- 12:14expected regression from a team that's probably a pretty good 3
- 12:17point shooting team? I mean, is that is that?
- 12:19And he said, and he said, I hope so.
- 12:20Yeah, I know it's hard because I think last year we heard similar
- 12:24things of, hey, we're a good shooting team, It just hasn't
- 12:26shown up yet and then it never showed up.
- 12:28So it's good that the team got you know, and and you could
- 12:32credit VMI. I was joking in my head, like
- 12:34seeing Mooney, I'm sure he would never do this, but in the press
- 12:36conference do like the two small side because VMI wasn't a very
- 12:40big team. They weren't.
- 12:41So it it gives you more chances for three, but it's good to see
- 12:44our team. I think that's.
- 12:45Shooting night, I think I said we needed twenty points, 20
- 12:47rebounds from the five. Well, I mean, you know, Walls
- 12:50and Beagle were well on their way, but I mean, even Ruma Glue
- 12:54was a a dominant 5 compared to the interior VMI.
- 12:56So it's like we had a, we had a really good night out of the
- 12:58five. I was looking at just that and
- 13:01looking back on the season, so I think walls of my memory is
- 13:05correct. Has four threes through four
- 13:07games, so he's below his 50 pace.
- 13:11Remember, he said he was going to get 50.
- 13:12Threes, he only played 17 minutes.
- 13:14He was plus 25 actually in 17 minutes.
- 13:16So I'd listen to the VMI post game press conference.
- 13:18He just said Richmond kicked our butt.
- 13:20He said they switched everything off, every screen they switched
- 13:24and it's like we weren't prepared for that.
- 13:25And so we played a lot of one-on-one ball and dominating.
- 13:28And coach Boykin or Boykin, Now, how do you pronounce that?
- 13:31I think Mooney said Boykin, but I thought it was Boykin.
- 13:33Anyway, he had the scout. I asked Mooney that, too.
- 13:35And so congratulations to him for putting together, you know,
- 13:39a great prep session to help these guys do what they did.
- 13:42It was a it was a dominating performance.
- 13:44Can I give you a few advanced stats that are kind of fun?
- 13:47Before you do that, you're giving me some grace here,
- 13:51Porter, because what you haven't told people is that I wasn't
- 13:54there and I gave my seats to two VMI fans.
- 13:57I was. I debated because, you know.
- 13:59They behave. I decided to not give you a lot
- 14:02of grief about it. I did tell Rob who sat sits
- 14:05behind us that I was like how does how does Tom sell the seats
- 14:08or give the seats away to the opposing squad?
- 14:11It's a buddy of mine and his kid kind of.
- 14:13I appreciated someone got to use those seats and I just need to
- 14:18get that parking there. They were very nice people and
- 14:20I'm happy that they got a chance to to see the the game.
- 14:23I'm not sure it was the result they were hoping for, but it was
- 14:25a good game and. OK, advanced stats.
- 14:28What do you? So Aidan Argebrite's top 20 in
- 14:30the nation and fouls drawn per 40 minutes.
- 14:33And if you watch him play, he is a master.
- 14:35If you come into contact with Aidan Argebrite, he's going to
- 14:38snap that head back and let the referee know it.
- 14:40It's fantastic. He's he does what you should do
- 14:42when you're hit. It's fantastic when that
- 14:44person's on your team. Yes, I love it.
- 14:46I just absolutely love it. Mike Walls is top 20 in
- 14:49offensive rebound percentage. That is a trickier stat to
- 14:53explain, but I'll just say it this way.
- 14:54Offensive rebounding percentage is the percentage of possible
- 14:57offensive rebounds a player gets and computed, as you know, has
- 15:01to do with the player, the percent of minutes played versus
- 15:03the opportunities they have. So Congrats to him.
- 15:05And then Beagle would be among the leaders in offensive rating
- 15:10in the country if overall offensive rating.
- 15:12So these are all stats are all according to Ken Palm if he
- 15:15played 40% of the minutes, but she hasn't yet because nobody's
- 15:17really playing 40% of the minutes for the Spiders, so.
- 15:20Now you did on my behalf do a student count.
- 15:24We'll be at about 7576. 7576 was the rough number.
- 15:28I took a couple pictures for you.
- 15:29I was trying to, it's hard from where we sit to see who's behind
- 15:32the basket on the lower level, but it looked right.
- 15:34The ladies were also there at the game, sitting in their
- 15:36normal area on the opposite side of where the students sit.
- 15:39Happy to see that. And so just the team supporting
- 15:42each other. That's that's great to see.
- 15:46Well good couple wins that Spiders are undefeated in the
- 15:49Robin Center this year which is nice.
- 15:51Well hopefully that lasts for a while.
- 15:54We do have some games this weekend.
- 15:56You ready to talk about the games this?
- 15:57Weekend. Why don't you?
- 15:58Why don't you go first? OK, so we got the men's have the
- 16:02Gardner Webb running Bulldogs on on Saturday at 7:00 PM.
- 16:07It's a North Carolina team from North Carolina.
- 16:09Can Bulldogs really run? They don't.
- 16:10Really. And it's run in.
- 16:12It's run in. There's like an apostrophe.
- 16:13Running, running, running, running.
- 16:15OK, got you. Stop there.
- 16:17You know, I've talked about this Bardovic ranking, so I like
- 16:21using that. So if you go through their
- 16:23season so far, they're O and five, they're ranked 362.
- 16:28Yeah. I'm sorry, I'm not laughing at
- 16:30you. I'm laughing with you.
- 16:31Yeah. So let's first.
- 16:32For comparison, how many teams are there in Division One?
- 16:36Not many more than that. Let me let me look that up while
- 16:38you're saying. OK, so they're all in five, but
- 16:40they have four games with Division One and one with
- 16:46division two before I get to that. 360-5365.
- 16:50South, They've played a hard schedule, so they're tested.
- 16:55They got whooped at Minnesota, they got whooped at Clemson,
- 16:59they got whooped at DePaul. But those are all top 100 teams.
- 17:03Sounds like they're. Tested at getting whooped.
- 17:05And then they had a a tighter game, but they lost at Elon.
- 17:09Elon's not, I think they're 260. OK.
- 17:13But you know, they've been playing on the road.
- 17:15They had one home game that they lost to Division 2 N Greenville.
- 17:21The powerful N Greenville squad. Yeah.
- 17:23So they have not been great. Now trying to like give them
- 17:28some credit. So they had 11 new players this
- 17:30year. So they are they have a whole
- 17:32new team, kind of two returners that do contribute, but 11 new
- 17:37players there. If you look at their stats, they
- 17:40are allowing 93 points per game and they're scoring 69 per game.
- 17:46I mean, obviously they've they're losing, so you expect a
- 17:48deficit, but their defense is their problem.
- 17:51They can't stop people. So I was just looking at him,
- 17:53616-264-6769. It's the starting lineup.
- 17:56That's not terrible. Yeah, better than BMI actually.
- 17:59So they've got a bunch of transfers.
- 18:01Jacob Hogwarth from Iona or Hoggarth.
- 18:05I say Hogwarth. Hogwart.
- 18:06He's he's not. He's not.
- 18:07From Hogwart came from the hog. Company, he's he's 69, he's
- 18:10going to be a big, big body inside.
- 18:12They do have a couple other big bodies inside.
- 18:14So I think they won't look like a 362 team when we size them up,
- 18:19let's say for the jump. I I suspect they'll look like
- 18:23that later. They do have a an interesting
- 18:26freshman who was red shirt. It was a Alabama recruit was red
- 18:31shirted his freshman year and then transferred.
- 18:33But he was like a really a top high school player.
- 18:35You don't get to Alabama without being a top high school player.
- 18:38So he's he's a kid named Sims. He plays I think off the bench,
- 18:42but again, they're he, the coach is trying to build a new team.
- 18:47That's going to take time. Maybe when they get to their
- 18:49conference, they'll have been well tested and be ready for the
- 18:54for who they're playing in conference, but they are not
- 18:56very good. So this is a game that should be
- 18:59very similar to the VMI game where everyone's playing on our
- 19:02team, you know, 10 to 15 minutes.
- 19:05We're scoring lots of points similar to the VMI game.
- 19:09It should be an entertaining game because of the point
- 19:11scoring is fun and I hope you didn't drink all the Falcon
- 19:15Smash on Wednesday. So.
- 19:18There's other. Ways to enjoy the game.
- 19:20But did hit a crumble cookie on Wednesday by the way, which is a
- 19:23nice little add in to have that at the game.
- 19:25But yeah, so this is a game that should hopefully wrap up this
- 19:29five and O streak before the team goes on their Thanksgiving
- 19:33trip to Florida. But we shouldn't see much
- 19:37running by the Bulldogs. Yeah, Kenpom has them slightly
- 19:41higher at 343 out of 365, a little bit, a little bit better,
- 19:45but not enough to say that they're going to threaten the
- 19:47Spiders, the mighty Spiders in the Robin center.
- 19:50I mean, like I said, we we got to keep stacking wins, but we
- 19:52got to keep stacking wins convincingly like we did against
- 19:54VMI. And if we keep doing that, by
- 19:56the way, our Kenpom came up big time after that win.
- 19:58So he now has his one O 5 up from 1:19.
- 20:02So that's those are the, the efficiency numbers improve when
- 20:05you have a dominating win like you did against VMI and that and
- 20:08that improves the net, which improves your chances for a net
- 20:10large. So let's keep that rolling.
- 20:12And so that Saturday night and then Sunday during the day, the
- 20:15women host Navy. Yes, there's a Taylor Swift
- 20:19Appreciation Day or something like that.
- 20:21Let's hope that brings up the crowd because Navy is not going
- 20:24to be a pushover in the year of the brutal schedule.
- 20:27For the ladies, it continues. Navy's picked as the preseason
- 20:31Patriot Conference favorite. They are four and O.
- 20:35They beat Florida. Florida's pretty good.
- 20:37They're ranked one O 7. And the ladies are Navy ladies
- 20:40in Bartovic, Bartorvic, I think it is, and Zenai Barnett, gay.
- 20:47I'm not sure if that's how you pronounce it, but that is the
- 20:49player that you got to worry about.
- 20:50She's the preseason player of the year.
- 20:53In the Patriot. They actually do a preseason
- 20:54player of the year and she's done nothing but look like she's
- 20:57the best player in that conference through four games.
- 20:59Look this up but I'm betting their pre season teams have 5 on
- 21:04each. I didn't looked up the whole
- 21:05Patriot awards, but I just was quickly doing some scout on on
- 21:09Navy for our listeners. They're coming off a win against
- 21:12Ryder, they beat Florida. As I mentioned, Gay went for 23
- 21:15points and 10 rebounds against Ryder and 22 eight versus
- 21:18Florida 22. .2 She's a. 58 guard.
- 21:22They also have two other players, Almeida and Misuch, who
- 21:25had good games versus Florida. They are one of the top teams in
- 21:28the country at 3 point defense. So they actually prevent teams
- 21:31from putting in the three, which is one of our strengths.
- 21:33So that'll be interesting to watch.
- 21:35And they feature A6 four center from Richmond, VA named Kate
- 21:39Sampson, who went to the Saint Gertrude, who is a quality
- 21:43player who got hurt last year. She played 24 minutes against
- 21:46Florida, grabbed 7 rebounds. So welcome back to the RVA,
- 21:49Kate. But it's going to be a good
- 21:51game. This is not a game that's going
- 21:53to be, you know, a 30 point blowout.
- 21:55Maybe it's a good team and it's going to take the fans showing
- 21:58up on Sunday to help us win this game.
- 22:01So kind of leaking a little bit of what we got coming up, but we
- 22:06are going to do something a little different this Sunday.
- 22:08This one will be coming out on Friday, but then we've got these
- 22:11games this weekend to talk about in our Monday release and we are
- 22:16going to attempt to record at the Robin Center after the game.
- 22:23So hopefully we're able to, you know, maybe talk to a coach,
- 22:26talk to some players or if anything, just talk to
- 22:28ourselves. But it'll be in the Robin Center
- 22:31following the Navy game. And while we're doing that, you
- 22:34can be I think on the court they're going to be doing like,
- 22:36you know, get your Taylor Swift bracelet put together.
- 22:39I think the players will be out there socializing with the fans,
- 22:43probably signing a lots of autographs.
- 22:45So I think Taylor Swift night. I don't.
- 22:48I don't. My daughter probably has a
- 22:50Taylor Swift T-shirt somewhere at home.
- 22:52She's in college now. Are you wearing it?
- 22:53Maybe if I can find one I may just put one on I love.
- 22:56It. I love that.
- 22:58Because you know it, it's going to feel like a perfect night to
- 23:01dress up like hipsters. Yeah, that that would be cool.
- 23:03I would love to see you in that. And can I real quickly put a
- 23:06plug in for the University of Richmond's graduation rate for
- 23:09athletes? We just got this yesterday.
- 23:11Yeah, there's some other news going on.
- 23:12Yeah, let's wrap up with that. Spider's Place top 10 nationally
- 23:15in graduation success rate. So congratulations.
- 23:18I mean, getting prepared for life is a hallmark of the 90.
- 23:238%, yeah. So it's well above the national
- 23:26averages. So Congrats to the whole
- 23:28athletic department for that. Well, let's also, I mean, you
- 23:31can compare it to other things too.
- 23:33The host of this podcast of 100% graduation rate.
- 23:36We do. We are 100% graduated from the
- 23:38University of Richmond and I would say we're doing our best
- 23:42to to try to help University of Richmond sustain its excellence
- 23:46in athletics. Hey, one other piece of news I
- 23:48want to wrap up with that, maybe it's old news, but the A10
- 23:50commissioner announced her retirement after this season saw
- 23:54that Bernadette Mcglade, who's been the commissioner for almost
- 23:5820 years, this will be her last season.
- 24:02So congratulations to her on her retirement.
- 24:04That also means we're going to have a new commissioner coming
- 24:07in sometime. I'm guessing they'll try to
- 24:10announce it this spring. You're.
- 24:11Telling me I need to look for a new podcast partner.
- 24:13Well, I think, are you going for it?
- 24:14Are you? Going for it we should do Co
- 24:16commissioners. I mean, wow, I hadn't thought of
- 24:18that. I mean, they are, you know, it's
- 24:21something that, you know, the A10 is, is has been a solid
- 24:24conference. 18 years is a long time.
- 24:26There's been a lot of change. There's been a bunch of teams
- 24:29brought in. There's only so much you can do
- 24:31to keep the teams in that want to advance to a bigger league.
- 24:34So there's a probably a lot of what she's been able to do is
- 24:37make sure this conference has just stayed around with, you
- 24:41know, 12 plus teams without changing the name from the
- 24:44Atlantic 10. But I do think some new blood
- 24:47will be great. We'll kind of see where the
- 24:48conference goes as you get a new commissioner in and our new Co
- 24:51commissioners maybe with some new ideas.
- 24:54Yeah, thanks to Bernadette. I mean, the basketball league, I
- 24:56think this year feels like we're we're a little bit on the
- 24:58comeback trail. I mean, we're not, we're not
- 25:00there yet where we have three or four teams looking like at large
- 25:03contenders for the NCA blade. But we have a an average
- 25:06conference rating that's much higher than last year.
- 25:07So I think the quality from one to the end of the conference is
- 25:11better than it's been in a few years.
- 25:12So that's good. Yeah, so big games this weekend,
- 25:15Taylor Swift night or Taylor Swift day on Sunday against
- 25:20Navy? Do you have a little Taylor
- 25:22Swift song to send this off into the?
- 25:25I am not going to sing any Taylor Swift, but I've I've used
- 25:28a couple lines in this podcast for those Taylor Swift fans
- 25:30looking for Easter eggs. Oh, I love it.
- 25:33So anyway, until next time, thank you for joining.
- 25:36This is Tom. This is Porter.
- 25:38And this is spider sounding off. See ya soothe.
- 25:41Your soul, although at. Times.
- 25:46They may lose control.
