- 1:42Speaker 1: Hey, b Joe and Ker Stevens singing areas off in here.
- 1:49Speaker 1: They got us Billy Joel Uptown Girl, a favorite karaoke track.
- 1:52Speaker 1: I've never had the courage to sing that one. I've
- 1:55Speaker 1: been up a few times and normally after a few drinks,
- 1:59Speaker 1: but that haven't we all? Oh So anyway, let's move
- 2:03Speaker 1: on to a bit of sport. Okay, So I'd like
- 2:05Speaker 1: to introduce you to our two special guests on my
- 2:08Speaker 1: show today. We have Joe Tolhurst from South Kent Mind
- 2:11Speaker 1: and Kirsty Hogbin who as a c swim confidence coach
- 2:14Speaker 1: and together they've been liaising for an event that's taking
- 2:17Speaker 1: place on Sunday, the twenty sixth of April.
- 2:19Speaker 2: So first of all, let's have a chat with Joe.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Hello Joe, how are you?
- 2:22Speaker 3: Yeah, very good?
- 2:22Speaker 2: keV how are you yeah fine? Thanks, yeah, thanks for
- 2:24Speaker 2: coming in. And Kirsty Hello to you. Are you okay?
- 2:27Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 2:28Speaker 5: Doing well?
- 2:28Speaker 2: Been for swim today?
- 2:29Speaker 5: Be in for a swim? Have you that's really choppy
- 2:31Speaker 5: this morning?
- 2:31Speaker 2: Oh was it? Yeah? Okay, brilliant.
- 2:34Speaker 1: So Joe just briefly tell us about what's happening on
- 2:39Speaker 1: Sunday stands on Sunday twenty sixth of April, and then
- 2:42Speaker 1: we will go into it in more day later.
- 2:44Speaker 3: On Lovely Yees. So on Sunday, the twenty sixth of April,
- 2:47Speaker 3: South Kempminder hosting a community seed dip at Sunny Sands,
- 2:50Speaker 3: sponsored by local mechanical engineering firm Amdell and supported by
- 2:54Speaker 3: loads of members of the local community. It's a fundraising
- 2:57Speaker 3: event for South Kent. Mind if you raise twenty five
- 3:00Speaker 3: five pound plus you're a CVA swim caps up into
- 3:02Speaker 3: all abilities. It's supportive, community focused and encourages people to
- 3:07Speaker 3: try something new and step out of their comfort zone.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Right, So, I mean this is the first I mean
- 3:11Speaker 1: when you think of like dipping in the sea apart
- 3:13Speaker 1: from a curse, it's just like a boxing day, isn't it. Yeah,
- 3:16Speaker 1: so hopefully the temperaures would be a bit warmer than
- 3:18Speaker 1: boxing day. So Kursey, you've got a wealth of experience
- 3:23Speaker 1: in sea swimming. So what's your bin roll your role
- 3:27Speaker 1: being with with helping Joe.
- 3:29Speaker 5: Yeah, so Joe contacted me a couple of months ago
- 3:32Speaker 5: and yeah, just wanted some advice for safety also marketing,
- 3:37Speaker 5: so I do that on the side freelance. So yeah,
- 3:39Speaker 5: we just had a coffee and went through some of
- 3:42Speaker 5: the you know, things like risk assessments and just an
- 3:44Speaker 5: idea of like what to do, like things like water temperature.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, okay, So it's obviously been a team effort,
- 3:52Speaker 1: which obviously your skills one in putting on charity efforts
- 3:56Speaker 1: and to curse the on your sea swimming experience have
- 4:00Speaker 1: dealed really nicely by the sound of it. Okay, So Joe,
- 4:03Speaker 1: So whose idea was this? Did you dream this up?
- 4:05Speaker 1: I saw that little cheeky video. But you didn't actually
- 4:08Speaker 1: go in though, did you? You only went in up
- 4:10Speaker 1: to your knees? Did you run out?
- 4:12Speaker 2: It was good?
- 4:13Speaker 3: And think Kevin, Yeah, are we going all the way
- 4:15Speaker 3: in on the day?
- 4:16Speaker 2: But yeah, it was good.
- 4:17Speaker 3: A thing it's a bit too cold back then, Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:19Speaker 3: The idea sort of came about because you know, we're
- 4:22Speaker 3: really kind of local charity that kind of focuses on
- 4:27Speaker 3: engaging with the local community and focusing on what's popular.
- 4:31Speaker 3: And obviously seaswimming really popular in our local community because
- 4:34Speaker 3: of the benefits to mental health and well being, and
- 4:38Speaker 3: we saw a great opportunity to collaborate with the local
- 4:41Speaker 3: sea swim community and do something good for the charity.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Great.
- 4:44Speaker 1: So also, I think we would sort of mention that
- 4:48Speaker 1: a little bit later and come back to it repeat it.
- 4:50Speaker 1: But south Kin mind a busy l team, aren't they
- 4:54Speaker 1: always out there doing stuff and big program of events.
- 4:57Speaker 1: So it's your chance now to market some of these
- 5:01Speaker 1: events on radio focus and so what's coming up?
- 5:04Speaker 3: Yeah, we've got loads coming up.
- 5:05Speaker 4: Kevin.
- 5:05Speaker 3: It's great that you say that we're out there and
- 5:08Speaker 3: doing lots because because that's really are our kind of
- 5:10Speaker 3: aim as a charity to get out there in the
- 5:12Speaker 3: local community and let people know that we are your
- 5:16Speaker 3: local mental health charity to support anyone in the folks
- 5:19Speaker 3: and over districts.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Right, And so I mean you've got a program of events. Yeah,
- 5:24Speaker 1: so tell us about supposing someone is tuned in for
- 5:27Speaker 1: the first time, just move to Folkstone and what's this
- 5:30Speaker 1: self kid Minded where you go?
- 5:33Speaker 3: Yeah, South Commander are local independent mental health charity. We're
- 5:36Speaker 3: affiliated with National Mind, who are the larger charity that
- 5:41Speaker 3: the advocacy charity that everyone knows, but we're actually an
- 5:44Speaker 3: independent charity. So yeah, everything that we raise stays locally
- 5:49Speaker 3: and supports local people. We do loads of local events
- 5:54Speaker 3: such as sponsored dog walk, we do the Venetian Fate,
- 5:58Speaker 3: the Sange Sea Festival, and then put on our own
- 6:00Speaker 3: events like a firewalk and the Mental Health Fun Run.
- 6:03Speaker 3: So we're really locally focused and really committed to supporting
- 6:08Speaker 3: anyone in our local community with a mental health challenge.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:11Speaker 1: So in those last if you like a couple of years,
- 6:13Speaker 1: it might be due to the fact since you've been
- 6:15Speaker 1: on the team, I mean, have your numbers increased. People
- 6:19Speaker 1: show more interest and you're getting the feedback is which
- 6:22Speaker 1: is what you want.
- 6:23Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely. People are recognizing us all over the place
- 6:25Speaker 3: and signposting to our services all the time, which is
- 6:28Speaker 3: really important for us because we're for a range of
- 6:30Speaker 3: services like counseling, wellbeing groups, and a range of activities
- 6:33Speaker 3: such as walk walks, mindfulness and creative sessions. And it's
- 6:37Speaker 3: really about letting everyone know that we are there and
- 6:39Speaker 3: we can support you if you need us.
- 6:41Speaker 1: So you've got a kind of a workshop up there,
- 6:43Speaker 1: haven't you, cooking and stuff like that.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Yeah, some of those events. Yeah.
- 6:48Speaker 3: So the road on Dover Road, on the corner of
- 6:50Speaker 3: Tontime Street and Dover Road is our center where we
- 6:53Speaker 3: host our cooking group, our well being activities and it's
- 6:56Speaker 3: really our hub for the charities. So a lot of
- 6:58Speaker 3: what we do is based.
- 6:59Speaker 2: There, all right.
- 7:00Speaker 1: So looking back on some of the events that you've done,
- 7:03Speaker 1: For example, the firewalk, Hell was that was that greeted
- 7:06Speaker 1: in the community.
- 7:07Speaker 3: It was brilliant. We had loads of engagement from from
- 7:10Speaker 3: the local community, local businesses, local counselors even walk the
- 7:14Speaker 3: coals and it was that it was at three Hills,
- 7:17Speaker 3: So we had great collaboration with the Sports Trust and yeah,
- 7:21Speaker 3: we raised some great funds for the charity and we're
- 7:23Speaker 3: looking to repeat it this year and build on that success.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Right and the Mental Health Rum is that going ahead again?
- 7:29Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a great event, isn't it going Thank you
- 7:31Speaker 3: so much for your support over the years. So this
- 7:34Speaker 3: year will be our third year running Mental Health along
- 7:36Speaker 3: the Lees. It follows the park Rind course, so it's
- 7:39Speaker 3: a five kilometer fun run starting at the bandstand and
- 7:43Speaker 3: we encourage everyone to dress up as elves and that's
- 7:45Speaker 3: going to be on Sunday, the sixth of December, So
- 7:47Speaker 3: get it in your diary.
- 7:49Speaker 1: I better check my diary, right, So genuinely mental health.
- 7:58Speaker 2: I mean what sort of people come to you.
- 8:00Speaker 1: I don't go into great detail, but what sort of
- 8:03Speaker 1: support do they need?
- 8:04Speaker 3: Yeah, so mental health challenges are really common. So one
- 8:08Speaker 3: of five adults in the UK has experienced mental health
- 8:11Speaker 3: challenge over the past year. So we're there to support
- 8:16Speaker 3: anyone who needs, who suffers from loneliness, who needs a
- 8:19Speaker 3: bit of connection as a way of supporting their mental
- 8:23Speaker 3: health and so putting on events like this showcase how
- 8:29Speaker 3: you community and connection is a great form of support
- 8:33Speaker 3: how physical activity and nature proven to support well being
- 8:36Speaker 3: and an event that brings people together as well.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Right, So I do believe if I turn the clock
- 8:41Speaker 1: back just a little bit, you also had a team
- 8:44Speaker 1: that ran the half marathon.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Yeah we did.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Yeah, just raising awareness and funds for the charity and
- 8:49Speaker 3: getting involved with a great local event.
- 8:51Speaker 1: And also I do believe I went up there one
- 8:54Speaker 1: evening and you were doing a couch to five k.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Yes, couch to five k that was last year round
- 8:59Speaker 3: September time. We did that in collaboration with Folks and
- 9:01Speaker 3: Running Club, So big thank you to everyone then who
- 9:05Speaker 3: helped us out, and it was Yeah, it was a
- 9:07Speaker 3: great event to encourage running outside getting fits as a
- 9:13Speaker 3: way of benefiting your mental health.
- 9:14Speaker 1: And did you notice that the people were jelling better
- 9:17Speaker 1: each week that they went back and sort of at
- 9:20Speaker 1: the end of the course that they'd made new friends.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely the group really grow grew over the twelve
- 9:27Speaker 3: week course and it was really nice to see relationships
- 9:29Speaker 3: developed and people become more engaged with South Kent Mind
- 9:33Speaker 3: and you know, it was great to be running along
- 9:35Speaker 3: the lees seeing people spraining the word about the charity. Yeah,
- 9:38Speaker 3: it's a really nice event.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Right, Okay, So we're going to take a little music
- 9:42Speaker 1: break now and I'm looking for some sort of special
- 9:45Speaker 1: songs to play about this swimming event. And the one
- 9:48Speaker 1: I can find most of all was a song by
- 9:50Speaker 1: Belinda Carlisle. It's called Circle in the Sand.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Walking through the sun.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Circle in the sand. There and will be competitors for
- 10:28Speaker 1: the community Seed be doing circles in the sand or
- 10:31Speaker 1: will they go straight in?
- 10:33Speaker 2: Well, we have to wait and see him.
- 10:35Speaker 1: I always say that a boxing day, I always tell
- 10:37Speaker 1: the same little story if anybody goes down to the
- 10:40Speaker 1: sea on the sea dip and they changed their mind,
- 10:43Speaker 1: are they a chicken dipper?
- 10:46Speaker 2: Anyway?
- 10:46Speaker 1: This is a Tony Blackpone joke. Right, So moving on
- 10:48Speaker 1: to Kursty now and now curse the Welcome to the show.
- 10:51Speaker 1: You've been in a couple of times, so you are
- 10:53Speaker 1: a sea swim confidence coach. But let's take us back
- 10:57Speaker 1: to how it all started. I remember you coming up
- 11:00Speaker 1: on the coach with us to the London Marathon, which
- 11:02Speaker 1: you didn't have a very good day.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Did you tell us about that. No.
- 11:06Speaker 5: At the halfway point, Kevin, I twisted my ankle. I
- 11:09Speaker 5: had a weakness anyway, but I didn't realize I'd torn
- 11:13Speaker 5: a ligament at that halfway point. But because of all
- 11:15Speaker 5: the crowd and the adrenaline, I finished the race. But
- 11:19Speaker 5: then I was out for quite a while.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Yeah, if I remember rightly, you took to swimming just
- 11:25Speaker 1: as a sort of something else to do because you
- 11:28Speaker 1: like to keep fit.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Is that right?
- 11:30Speaker 5: Yeah? I was trying to figure out what star was
- 11:32Speaker 5: feeling a bit depressed. I was. I loved running, it
- 11:35Speaker 5: was so good for my mental health. And then I
- 11:37Speaker 5: set myself a challenge just to do one hundred days
- 11:39Speaker 5: in the sea until I was my fit was better.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Right, But that hundred turned into another naught on the end,
- 11:46Speaker 2: isn't it?
- 11:47Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 11:47Speaker 1: And you did a thousand days. Do you listen to this?
- 11:50Speaker 1: Everybody out there? Coursey did a thousand days consecutive going
- 11:55Speaker 1: in the sea. And I will say that I do
- 11:58Speaker 1: remember that day. Tell us what happened that day of
- 12:00Speaker 1: the thousand days?
- 12:01Speaker 5: Yeah, that was wonderful. Like all the people i'd met
- 12:04Speaker 5: swimming UK supported and we all got in the water together.
- 12:08Speaker 5: I think there was about sixty of us and it
- 12:11Speaker 5: fell on the coldest month of the year in the
- 12:13Speaker 5: water as well.
- 12:14Speaker 2: It was in March, well, I do remember. And they
- 12:16Speaker 2: all made a lovely guard of honor and then they
- 12:19Speaker 2: all joined you. It was really a memorial day. Memorable day.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Sorry, So have you kept you going consistently or have
- 12:29Speaker 1: you sort of had the old day off?
- 12:31Speaker 5: Yeah? I took a day off tears ago now, I
- 12:34Speaker 5: think so it was twenty twenty four.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Did you have a note from your mum? By the way,
- 12:39Speaker 2: taking a day off in a thousand night?
- 12:41Speaker 3: It was hard?
- 12:42Speaker 2: So how many did you do actually consecutive? Can you remember?
- 12:44Speaker 5: There's about one thousand and five hundred and fifty or
- 12:48Speaker 5: something was that? Yeah?
- 12:49Speaker 1: Right, that's brilliant. It's amazing. There must be a Guiness
- 12:53Speaker 1: Book of records.
- 12:53Speaker 2: I think.
- 12:54Speaker 1: I don't know whether if there's a category for going
- 12:57Speaker 1: into to have a sea swim every day. Yeah, we'd
- 13:01Speaker 1: have to look into that one, right. So from there
- 13:04Speaker 1: you decided to part your knowledge onto other people and
- 13:07Speaker 1: you started up this sea swimming confidence coaching. I mean,
- 13:11Speaker 1: how did that start off? Initially? Tell us about that,
- 13:14Speaker 1: and I know it's grown, So tell us the story
- 13:17Speaker 1: of that well.
- 13:18Speaker 5: I was working in marketing at the time, and then
- 13:20Speaker 5: I got I got let go from a job, and
- 13:23Speaker 5: then I was like, I'm just going to try and
- 13:24Speaker 5: do something I'm passionate about. Put up a website and
- 13:27Speaker 5: put some ads out, offered confidence lessons, and I didn't
- 13:31Speaker 5: realize just how many people were afraid of the sea.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Only just remind me, was this after COVID or pre COVID.
- 13:37Speaker 5: This was during COVID, So this was twenty twenty one.
- 13:40Speaker 1: I think, yeah, yeah, because a lot of people just
- 13:42Speaker 1: took to swimming in the sea.
- 13:44Speaker 2: They during COVID.
- 13:45Speaker 5: Anyway, Yeah, so many.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, So okay, So I'm I can swim. I'm
- 13:53Speaker 1: a new to folks and I want to swim in
- 13:55Speaker 1: the sea. I come down and meet you. What sort
- 13:58Speaker 1: of things would you ask me about swimming and whether
- 14:00Speaker 1: I should go ahead?
- 14:02Speaker 5: So I'd check beforehand if you have any health conditions
- 14:06Speaker 5: and if there are any to check with your doctor
- 14:08Speaker 5: before before you go in, because it is it is
- 14:10Speaker 5: an extreme sport. Obviously the water never really gets warm
- 14:14Speaker 5: here in the in the UK. And then I would
- 14:18Speaker 5: make sure you had all the correct gear. I mean,
- 14:20Speaker 5: you only really need a swimming costume in the summer,
- 14:23Speaker 5: but I would just make sure you had warm enough
- 14:25Speaker 5: gear because we'd be sitting for a little while chatting
- 14:27Speaker 5: and talking about a lot of sea theory as well
- 14:29Speaker 5: in the lesson. So just yeah, just checking that you
- 14:32Speaker 5: had all of the right gear, the right prep and
- 14:36Speaker 5: most of all, like before we go in the water
- 14:38Speaker 5: to calm that nervous system down de some deep breathing,
- 14:41Speaker 5: because a lot of it is about how your mindset
- 14:45Speaker 5: really before you go in the water.
- 14:46Speaker 2: And the temperature itself.
- 14:47Speaker 1: I mean, for like the first time, as if you like,
- 14:51Speaker 1: would you do they go in in a wet suit
- 14:53Speaker 1: or the idea is to just like go in in
- 14:55Speaker 1: the coursetume somewhere.
- 14:56Speaker 5: Wet suit depends on the time of year. Obviously, like
- 14:59Speaker 5: my business is seasonal, but some people booking in like
- 15:02Speaker 5: April and May, so we do tend to use wet
- 15:05Speaker 5: seats around that time of year, but some people wear
- 15:08Speaker 5: one all throughout the year. There's no judgment. It depends
- 15:10Speaker 5: on what you what you need, what you.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Want, and I mean extremities like toes and fingers and that. Yeah,
- 15:19Speaker 1: is there special gloves that people can wear.
- 15:21Speaker 5: Yes, you've got near pre and material gloves and beats.
- 15:24Speaker 5: It doesn't matter what brand you get, cheap or expensive,
- 15:28Speaker 5: they all work. It's really good to protect your extremities
- 15:31Speaker 5: in the winter swimming because you've got like your peripheral
- 15:35Speaker 5: nerves on the end of your fingers and toes and
- 15:37Speaker 5: you want to you want to protect them. So definitely
- 15:39Speaker 5: recommend getting a pair of those.
- 15:41Speaker 2: So okay, So how long we've been doing it now?
- 15:44Speaker 5: Since twenty nineteen, I think.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Is it?
- 15:46Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 15:47Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and you've seen it grow in the interest.
- 15:51Speaker 5: Yeah, massively as it Yeah, And like you say, it
- 15:54Speaker 5: was the pandemic that really created that. There was like
- 15:57Speaker 5: I think two hundred swimmers in the Folks and Swimming
- 16:01Speaker 5: Facebook group and now there are I think three thousand,
- 16:04Speaker 5: not all of yeah, not all of them swim.
- 16:07Speaker 1: But no, yeah, right, that's brilliant and mean do you
- 16:10Speaker 1: get people from me? They're not all Folkstonians, I should
- 16:13Speaker 1: imagine you get people from other parts of London or
- 16:17Speaker 1: people on holiday.
- 16:19Speaker 2: They just approach you and so can we come along idea.
- 16:22Speaker 5: Yeah, I get a lot of Londoners come down in
- 16:24Speaker 5: the summer. I even had a relay team from California
- 16:28Speaker 5: which was awesome and did a guided swim with them
- 16:30Speaker 5: because they didn't know the currents and the tides.
- 16:32Speaker 3: It was great.
- 16:32Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Right, we've got loads of talk about but we're going
- 16:35Speaker 1: to play another song and then we're gonna go back
- 16:36Speaker 1: to Joe. But there's a few more things I want
- 16:38Speaker 1: to ask.
- 16:38Speaker 2: You, Kirsty.
- 16:39Speaker 1: So we got to this song from two thousand and seven.
- 16:42Speaker 1: They said, I listened to Scouting for Girls and she's
- 16:44Speaker 1: so lovely scouting the girls there. She's a lovely two.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Thousand and seven.
- 17:05Speaker 1: And it always reminds me of the Race for Life
- 17:07Speaker 1: when we used to do it, when there was just
- 17:10Speaker 1: like ladies only. Now it's it's families only. At least
- 17:14Speaker 1: everybody can join in. But when it was ladies down,
- 17:16Speaker 1: this used to go down a real storm. It really
- 17:18Speaker 1: need Okay, So we're back in the studio with Joe
- 17:22Speaker 1: and Kirsty. So we're going to talk about how we
- 17:25Speaker 1: think the event might go on the day. So so Joe,
- 17:29Speaker 1: let's start with you just recap how you think it's
- 17:33Speaker 1: going to go.
- 17:33Speaker 3: Yeah, So, so to start off, sign ups are hosted
- 17:38Speaker 3: through our website, the South Kentmind website at south Kentmind
- 17:42Speaker 3: dot talg dot uk. So if you'd like to join
- 17:43Speaker 3: the DIP, as I said, open to all abilities, open
- 17:47Speaker 3: to everyone, whether you're an experienced ce swimmer or looking
- 17:50Speaker 3: to get into it or just want to support south
- 17:52Speaker 3: Kent Mind. You can sign up on our website south
- 17:55Speaker 3: Kentmind talk dot uk and then on the day we'll
- 17:59Speaker 3: dip itself. Will actually kick off from about eleven am,
- 18:02Speaker 3: but we'll be meeting down there from ten thirty. Sort
- 18:05Speaker 3: of sign in, give a brief, thank you, a bit
- 18:07Speaker 3: of briefing and Kirsty will be there to chat to people,
- 18:11Speaker 3: you know about bit of confidence getting into the water,
- 18:13Speaker 3: because it is a kind of bit of a nervy
- 18:15Speaker 3: thing to some people getting in the water. But Kursey's
- 18:19Speaker 3: been such a great support and it is so knowledgeable
- 18:21Speaker 3: of sea swimming and you know the benefits of it,
- 18:24Speaker 3: so I'm sure it'll chat with her, we'll put you
- 18:27Speaker 3: at rest. And we've also got folks and rescue there,
- 18:30Speaker 3: our local lifeguards to support, so big shout out to
- 18:33Speaker 3: them for supporting us on the day. Will provide yeah,
- 18:36Speaker 3: lifeguard support on the day.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Right, So you've had to choose this day and the
- 18:40Speaker 1: time with a bit of accuracy. Even you make sure
- 18:43Speaker 1: that the tide is sort of just turning around.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Is it.
- 18:46Speaker 3: Yeah, just turn around. So we've done all the tie
- 18:49Speaker 3: checks with the guys at the Coast Watch that they
- 18:53Speaker 3: helped us out with their sort of long range tide tracking,
- 18:57Speaker 3: so we know the tit will be good around eleven
- 18:59Speaker 3: am and yeah, fair weather conditions.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I do remember I compared a race at Broadstairs
- 19:08Speaker 1: on the beach there and the race went from Broadstairs
- 19:11Speaker 1: to Ramsgate actually on the actually through the sand, and
- 19:15Speaker 1: I got there a bit early and the race director
- 19:17Speaker 1: was there and he was looking at his watch, was
- 19:19Speaker 1: the tide was still up, and he's going, oh my word,
- 19:22Speaker 1: hope I've got this right, running through the waterlot chairts
- 19:27Speaker 1: of fire. But just as he said it, you know,
- 19:30Speaker 1: we're in about twenty minutes, you could see it was
- 19:32Speaker 1: it was pulling back. But yeah, it's a bit, you know,
- 19:35Speaker 1: a bit nerve wracking. So Kirsty on the day, what
- 19:38Speaker 1: have you been roped into doing?
- 19:40Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 19:40Speaker 5: So I'll just be speaking to individuals just sort of
- 19:44Speaker 5: as Jay were saying, kind of like, give give me
- 19:46Speaker 5: some confidence, answering any questions, just making sure people kind
- 19:52Speaker 5: of know what they're doing really and.
- 19:53Speaker 1: The main thing is that they we got to give
- 19:56Speaker 1: them confidence apart from your advice.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Is they got the sea rescue what they.
- 20:00Speaker 3: Called jo Yeah, folks and rescue.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Folks and rescue would be out there. So what they
- 20:03Speaker 1: have a little boat or something zipping about.
- 20:05Speaker 3: They'll be there on the beach and there in their
- 20:07Speaker 3: yellow tops. Yeah, lifeguard support.
- 20:10Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah yeah.
- 20:12Speaker 1: I mean, what what are you I mean, there's obviously
- 20:15Speaker 1: no sort of set routine, but what are you expecting
- 20:18Speaker 1: of these dippers? Are you expecting to swim the channel
- 20:21Speaker 1: and just have a little patal or come back?
- 20:22Speaker 3: Definitely not swim the channel. Said, it's up to It's
- 20:25Speaker 3: up to everyone really kind of we're not setting any
- 20:28Speaker 3: targets for how long you have to be in the water.
- 20:30Speaker 3: It's a really relaxed kind of seed dip because saying
- 20:32Speaker 3: for as long as you like, or importantly as long
- 20:34Speaker 3: as you feel comfortable with because as I said, open
- 20:36Speaker 3: to everyone. If you've never done it before, you might
- 20:37Speaker 3: just want to dip your toes. But if you're staying
- 20:40Speaker 3: for a little wile, that's take it up to you.
- 20:42Speaker 1: We have a safe okay, So ghostly just turning back
- 20:45Speaker 1: to you and your your team of sea swimmers.
- 20:47Speaker 2: And now I've got a little bullet point here.
- 20:50Speaker 1: I don't know if it's the right word to use,
- 20:52Speaker 1: but moon dips what is that all about?
- 20:55Speaker 2: Now?
- 20:55Speaker 1: Soon you're when you all gathered down there, probably in
- 20:58Speaker 1: a full moon, and would you have a fole going?
- 21:03Speaker 5: Yeah, it's been it's been lovely. Like we've we started,
- 21:05Speaker 5: i'd know, about four years ago, I think, and there
- 21:07Speaker 5: was just like three or four of us that were
- 21:09Speaker 5: crazy enough to swim and do a night swim. But
- 21:11Speaker 5: like it's become a gathering. Really not everybody swims. A
- 21:15Speaker 5: lot of people come and come to the fire and
- 21:18Speaker 5: it's great because there's some people that come like alone
- 21:20Speaker 5: and they're a bit nervous, but then they come down
- 21:22Speaker 5: and then they meet people. And we had we had
- 21:26Speaker 5: two people that met and now they're a couple.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Which was also swimming together.
- 21:31Speaker 5: Yeah they do.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Actually, Oh great, so are.
- 21:36Speaker 1: You I'm not say you'll be scouting for talent, but
- 21:39Speaker 1: would you be hoping that to preps someone that put
- 21:42Speaker 1: their toes in the water might come and see you
- 21:44Speaker 1: and want to, you know, just take it a bit further.
- 21:47Speaker 5: Yeah, definitely. I think to get the most out of
- 21:50Speaker 5: sea swimming, I think especially with technique building. I think
- 21:54Speaker 5: that's like most of the students I get now, people
- 21:57Speaker 5: that want to perhaps they're breaststrokers or they just dippers
- 22:00Speaker 5: and they want to, you know, do some proper front
- 22:03Speaker 5: crawling in the water, make the most of it.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Yeah, and from your experience, then if someone is a confident,
- 22:10Speaker 1: you know, swimmer in the pool and starts with you
- 22:13Speaker 1: health check's okay. How long is it before you can
- 22:17Speaker 1: sort of walk away from them and say, right, I'm
- 22:18Speaker 1: quite happy that they've they've learned the lessons about the
- 22:22Speaker 1: tides and that is it a long transformation?
- 22:25Speaker 5: Not at all. I mean, it depends on the individual.
- 22:27Speaker 5: But like sometimes we just have one session. If they
- 22:29Speaker 5: just want to know see theory, that's just one session.
- 22:32Speaker 5: But if they want to learn front crawl and open
- 22:34Speaker 5: water skills, it's normally about three or four on average.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, and we won't go just yet. But while
- 22:42Speaker 1: we're on a subject, how can people get in touch
- 22:44Speaker 1: with you? Just give your social media a bit of
- 22:49Speaker 1: a promotion now.
- 22:50Speaker 5: Yeah, so on Instagram, so it's Kirsty c Swimcach, kirstyhogbend
- 22:55Speaker 5: dot com and yeah, Kirsty s swim coach on Facebook
- 22:59Speaker 5: as well.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Okay, we're going to play a little song now, and
- 23:02Speaker 1: this one I did promise somebody that I would play
- 23:05Speaker 1: this one. I didn't have time to play it when
- 23:08Speaker 1: I was on air last time.
- 23:10Speaker 2: Now.
- 23:12Speaker 1: I went to a school reunion the other day and
- 23:16Speaker 1: it's not the first one, and I saw people there
- 23:19Speaker 1: that I started school with. And bearing in mind I'm
- 23:22Speaker 1: in my mid seventies now, so you're going back sixty
- 23:26Speaker 1: odd years. And there was one chap that has moved
- 23:29Speaker 1: to Spain and his wife tracked me down and and
- 23:35Speaker 1: then the phone went and I thought, oh, that's a
- 23:37Speaker 1: funny ring tone, Well is that And it was my
- 23:41Speaker 1: friend who I hadn't spoken to for thirty years or no.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Well we left school with sixty seven and so in
- 23:49Speaker 1: all that time, and I was speaking to his wife
- 23:52Speaker 1: as well, and I said, oh, is there a special
- 23:54Speaker 1: song that you've got for the two of you? And
- 23:58Speaker 1: she said, oh, yes, she said them because I used
- 24:01Speaker 1: to go to school in North London and it was
- 24:03Speaker 1: in the era of the sixties and we had the
- 24:05Speaker 1: Dave Clark five were famous at the time, and they're
- 24:08Speaker 1: playing at the Tottenham Royal But she said This is
- 24:11Speaker 1: one of her songs, kind of the Baryon Lynn met
- 24:15Speaker 1: in nineteen sixty seven at the Tottenham Royal and it
- 24:18Speaker 1: sounds from this song that they had a few problems,
- 24:20Speaker 1: because if you listen to the words of this song
- 24:22Speaker 1: you'll see what I mean. But like all of us do,
- 24:25Speaker 1: they're still together. And this is for you, Barryon Lynn,
- 24:29Speaker 1: after nearly sixty years together. This is Lorraine Ellison and
- 24:34Speaker 1: stay with me?
- 24:48Speaker 2: Well did you go Telly?
- 24:55Speaker 4: Things roll?
- 25:15Speaker 1: As Loraine Ellison there, stay with me baby, and as
- 25:20Speaker 1: Lynn said that she's still hanging on to him after
- 25:23Speaker 1: sixty years. So it's so lovely to speak to you
- 25:25Speaker 1: both this morning out in Spain. Okay, so we've got
- 25:29Speaker 1: to a little bit of time. So what we're going
- 25:32Speaker 1: to do now we're going to speak to Kirsty now
- 25:34Speaker 1: because off air we were talking about something very interesting
- 25:37Speaker 1: about the temperature of the water. So Kirsty, what's the
- 25:41Speaker 1: temperature of the water around about these days in Folston.
- 25:45Speaker 5: Yes, it's about ten degrees Karen.
- 25:47Speaker 1: And degrees and the outside temperature at that was just
- 25:51Speaker 1: creeping up now, isn't it's sort fourteen fifteen, so it's
- 25:55Speaker 1: it's warmer when you get out right, so when you
- 25:58Speaker 1: go on holiday, we ever go to warm countries and
- 26:01Speaker 1: ever swim in warm.
- 26:02Speaker 5: Water idea and I find it too warm? Yeah, miss
- 26:06Speaker 5: I missed the cold water.
- 26:07Speaker 2: Here really Yeah that's interesting.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, right Joe, We're going to come back to
- 26:13Speaker 1: Kirsty just a sec. But this is your last little
- 26:15Speaker 1: chance to promote anything you want to do, so just
- 26:18Speaker 1: go ahead.
- 26:19Speaker 3: Yeah, last chance. So firstly I'm here on behalf South Kent. Mind,
- 26:24Speaker 3: your local independent mental health charity. So if you are,
- 26:26Speaker 3: if you anyone you know struggling with their mental health
- 26:29Speaker 3: experiencing challenges, do please get in touch with us to
- 26:32Speaker 3: look at how we might help you. Give us a
- 26:33Speaker 3: ring on one three or three two five hundred nine zero.
- 26:38Speaker 3: But yeah, obviously here as well to promote Dip for Mind,
- 26:41Speaker 3: which is our community c swim which on Sunday, the
- 26:43Speaker 3: twenty sixth of April on Sunny Sounds in Folkston. It's
- 26:46Speaker 3: all about bringing people together in a really positive, visible
- 26:49Speaker 3: way to support mental health. It's open to everyone, whether
- 26:52Speaker 3: you dip every day or this is a first time
- 26:54Speaker 3: dip for you. Most importantly it helps raise vital funds,
- 26:58Speaker 3: so no one in south Kent has to face mental
- 27:00Speaker 3: health problems alone, So find out more and sign up
- 27:03Speaker 3: at south kepmind dot org dot uk and yeah, sign
- 27:06Speaker 3: up today.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Well done, okay, Joe.
- 27:08Speaker 1: So even if you not don't want to dip, and
- 27:10Speaker 1: perhaps you want to support someone, go down there. I'm
- 27:13Speaker 1: sure that there'll be lethallystance advice and people down there
- 27:16Speaker 1: to tell you about south Kent mine and just go
- 27:19Speaker 1: along and find out all about it, Is that, right, Joe?
- 27:22Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 27:22Speaker 3: Definitely. And if you want to support through donating, we've
- 27:25Speaker 3: got just giving page made which on our website as well.
- 27:28Speaker 3: And if you want to if you're unable to make
- 27:29Speaker 3: it on the day we want to support you, welcome
- 27:31Speaker 3: to as well. And obviously you've got a fundraising target
- 27:33Speaker 3: in place for anyone who does sign up, raise twenty
- 27:36Speaker 3: five pounds or more and you receive a special South
- 27:39Speaker 3: Kent Mind swim cap for the Dame.
- 27:40Speaker 1: Right okay, So don't get your hearwits right, okay, So
- 27:44Speaker 1: curse that you. Now you've been doing this c swimming
- 27:47Speaker 1: look for quite a while now and you've built up
- 27:50Speaker 1: a good clear intel, but I'm sure there's room for more,
- 27:53Speaker 1: so just tell us briefly, how people can get in
- 27:56Speaker 1: touch with you.
- 27:58Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm on Instagram Kirsty cswim coach, or my website
- 28:02Speaker 5: Cairstihogbend dot com. Yeah.
- 28:05Speaker 1: And what final advice would you give to someone that's
- 28:08Speaker 1: perhaps listening to this and thinking, well, I've ave seen them.
- 28:11Speaker 1: I mean when I go to the park run on
- 28:13Speaker 1: a Saturday, I always go to the top of the
- 28:15Speaker 1: loop before I just have a little look over there,
- 28:18Speaker 1: and you think, just count the amount of nutters that
- 28:20Speaker 1: are in the pool today, one, two, three, four, and
- 28:24Speaker 1: then it goes five to six, seven, I would eight, nine, ten.
- 28:28Speaker 1: So Saturday morning does seem quite a popular time. And
- 28:31Speaker 1: so what advice would you give to somebody? I mean,
- 28:34Speaker 1: perhaps just come down and talk to you one time.
- 28:37Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, come and have a chat or you know,
- 28:39Speaker 5: give me a call lot from my website. Yeah. It's
- 28:44Speaker 5: great because there's so many people that are so supportive
- 28:46Speaker 5: on the beach down there, and you're fine people that
- 28:49Speaker 5: are very friendly and open, especially open water swimmers.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Right.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Okay, you've built up a great community, Kirsty, so of
- 28:56Speaker 1: real real big congratulations to you. Not I only have
- 28:59Speaker 1: you improved people's mental health, you know, their physical health
- 29:02Speaker 1: as well. And it's kind of a bit it's a
- 29:05Speaker 1: bit like the South Kept Mine. You know, they're not lonely.
- 29:07Speaker 1: People come along, perhaps they don't fancy going in for
- 29:09Speaker 1: a swim, but they know that people will.
- 29:11Speaker 2: Have a chat.
- 29:11Speaker 5: Yeah, definitely.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Okay, Kirsty, thanks for taking the time to come in,
- 29:14Speaker 1: and Joe, thank you as well. I'm sorry i won't
- 29:17Speaker 1: be able to join you in the dip. I'll be
- 29:19Speaker 1: on the coach heading towards London to watch, not to
- 29:23Speaker 1: run it, but to watch the London Marathon. So big
- 29:27Speaker 1: thanks to you and good luck, and I'm sure i'll
- 29:31Speaker 1: see you at another event shortly shortly on.
- 29:34Speaker 2: Thanks a lot. Okay.
- 29:35Speaker 1: This song is from nineteen ninety six Savage Garden to
- 29:38Speaker 1: the Moon and Back. Just take it, nineteen ninety six
- 30:07Speaker 1: Savage Garden to the Moon and Back.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Right.
- 30:10Speaker 1: So that was a brilliant interview which has lasted nearly
- 30:12Speaker 1: fifty minutes of the show. And so I'm gonna is
- 30:16Speaker 1: what I'm gonna do is just chuck in a few
- 30:18Speaker 1: little snippets of sport here, excuse me. So I'm gonna
- 30:20Speaker 1: stay carry on with rugby now. The Folkston first fifteen
- 30:25Speaker 1: were back in action last Saturday, but sadly they lost
- 30:28Speaker 1: forty eight thirty eight away to the Old Alanians. Their
- 30:32Speaker 1: last game is this Saturday when they welcome old rivals
- 30:35Speaker 1: Alsford to the Burlington Fields. The Seconds had a home
- 30:38Speaker 1: walk over a home walkover win as it's technically known
- 30:42Speaker 1: as opponents Lee must have had a bit of a
- 30:45Speaker 1: struggle to put a side out which goes down on
- 30:48Speaker 1: paper as a forty anneal win to Folkston. Saturday sees
- 30:53Speaker 1: the Seconds travel away to play Canterbury Deacons. Then their
- 30:57Speaker 1: last game is on the twenty fifth at home to sit.
- 31:01Speaker 1: The Ladies have to wait until their last game on
- 31:03Speaker 1: the Sunday twenty sixth, when they welcome Beckenham Ladies to
- 31:06Speaker 1: the Burlington Fields. Now, Hockey News congratulations to the Folks
- 31:11Speaker 1: and Optimist under sixteen girls team who beat the under
- 31:14Speaker 1: sixteen girls of Norwidge Hockey Club two to one in
- 31:18Speaker 1: the National Plate Final which is held at the Center
- 31:21Speaker 1: of Hockey Excellence in Nottingham. So yet once again a
- 31:25Speaker 1: team of juniors has reached a national final, and I
- 31:27Speaker 1: think that must be for about third year running. Now
- 31:30Speaker 1: they do churn out these youngsters and it's all down
- 31:33Speaker 1: to the whole infrastructure down at the three Hills. There
- 31:37Speaker 1: they got great teams, great coaches, great support and obviously
- 31:40Speaker 1: great facilities. So we're down to you under sixteens and
- 31:44Speaker 1: I just want to say a big well done to
- 31:47Speaker 1: Aila Gallaher she scored both of the goals.
- 31:50Speaker 2: Now quick shout out to.
- 31:52Speaker 1: A running friends of mine who completed the Brighton Marathon
- 31:55Speaker 1: on Sunday. Now, this is in no particular order. Henry
- 31:59Speaker 1: Axson two fifty five eight, Amy Axson four twenty two
- 32:03Speaker 1: thirty five, JS O'Callahan three fifty seven fifty eight, Lily
- 32:08Speaker 1: Rashbrook five O two nineteen, Bryan Veenie five O seven
- 32:13Speaker 1: fifty eight, Lucy may Helliwell five twenty five ten. And
- 32:18Speaker 1: this is a little bit different Keith Lyon five fifty
- 32:21Speaker 1: six eighteen.
- 32:23Speaker 2: But this was a trial.
- 32:24Speaker 1: Marathon which joined the main marathon course about five miles
- 32:28Speaker 1: from home, so the runners were experiencing the full on
- 32:32Speaker 1: finish after running many miles across the Sussex Downs and
- 32:36Speaker 1: the section of the Ditchland Beacon. Now, if you run
- 32:39Speaker 1: a trail marathon where you can picture it, it's out
- 32:41Speaker 1: in the middle of nowhere on the through fields. And
- 32:44Speaker 1: paths and things. It's not like you're getting the buzz
- 32:47Speaker 1: of a full marathon. But it was a great idea
- 32:50Speaker 1: to bring that marathon into the finish of the major marathon.
- 32:54Speaker 1: So it was a really good after being perhaps a
- 32:57Speaker 1: bit lonely out in the downs, you know, back to
- 33:00Speaker 1: the razmataz of the Brighton finish.
- 33:03Speaker 2: And so there you go, so well down to everybody.
- 33:06Speaker 1: I'm sure I've missed out a few, but they are
- 33:08Speaker 1: the ones that came quickly to mind, and I tracked
- 33:11Speaker 1: them down. So we got time for one little song. Now,
- 33:14Speaker 1: I think we might just squeeze this one in. We've
- 33:17Speaker 1: got about ten minutes to go, but I might just
- 33:20Speaker 1: I might just mention a bit of football anyway. My uh,
- 33:25Speaker 1: we've got the painters in that they're doing the outside
- 33:27Speaker 1: of the house and they've got these sort of railings
- 33:31Speaker 1: and needed to be painted, and so we haven't a
- 33:34Speaker 1: chat about colors. And the chap said to me, Okay,
- 33:37Speaker 1: I'm going to paint it black.
- 33:39Speaker 2: So what more? What could you do? Is that cue
- 33:41Speaker 2: for a song or not red? So I paid it black.
- 34:10Speaker 1: That one's for the painters outside my building painting the railings.
- 34:21Speaker 2: What color do you want kere u s paint it black?
- 34:36Speaker 1: Okay, rolling stones there from nineteen sixty six. Okay, do
- 34:41Speaker 1: you know what I'm going to squeeze this football in
- 34:44Speaker 1: and what have a little bit of time up sleeve.
- 34:46Speaker 1: So we're going to football folks in the Victor a
- 34:49Speaker 1: little bit more in depth on Saturday. But last Saturday
- 34:53Speaker 1: they traveled away to a Whitehawk near Brighton and came
- 34:56Speaker 1: away with a tool draw. Now apparently it was a
- 34:58Speaker 1: bit of a scrappy old game. I was listening to
- 35:01Speaker 1: Seasider's radio in Victor. Went one nil up, then they
- 35:04Speaker 1: went two one down. Then sub Adi Yusuf came on
- 35:07Speaker 1: and only after five minutes on the pitch he made
- 35:10Speaker 1: it two. So we'll have a chat with Ady Dowks,
- 35:13Speaker 1: a man on the spot, when he returns for the
- 35:15Speaker 1: Saturday Sports show. Between ten and eleven, Higtown lost four
- 35:19Speaker 1: nil at home to Sutton Athletic on Saturday and this
- 35:23Speaker 1: week they are at home to Fabush some strikeforce on
- 35:25Speaker 1: the Saturday, with their final game away to Punjab United
- 35:29Speaker 1: on Thursday to twenty third. Well, quite frankly, I expect
- 35:33Speaker 1: they'd be glad to see the back of this season
- 35:35Speaker 1: and focus on bouncing back at the first attempt next season.
- 35:40Speaker 1: In the NLG Kent County League, New Romney and Hawkins
- 35:43Speaker 1: both had two nil away wins. New Romney beat Fleet
- 35:47Speaker 1: Down and Hawkins beat King's Hill, and the bonus news
- 35:50Speaker 1: for Hawkins was that Minster's lack of form continued as
- 35:54Speaker 1: they lost four to at home to Metro Gas, meaning
- 35:57Speaker 1: on Saturday evening the Hawks were top of the table. However,
- 36:01Speaker 1: that changed on Tuesday when Minster beat New Romney two
- 36:05Speaker 1: to one to jump back into first place, and it
- 36:08Speaker 1: changed yet again on Wednesday evening when Hawkins beat Snodland
- 36:12Speaker 1: Town five to one, pushing them back into the top spot.
- 36:16Speaker 2: So that is a real league. I'm definitely going to
- 36:19Speaker 2: follow right to the end. It is so close.
- 36:22Speaker 1: Hawkins have got an advantage of a game in hand,
- 36:25Speaker 1: but you've still got to win that game in hand,
- 36:26Speaker 1: haven't you? Sad He sees Hawkins at home to Kent
- 36:29Speaker 1: United and New Romney at home to Aylesford. Garret Wilson's
- 36:35Speaker 1: focused inn in Victor Disability team picked up some.
- 36:37Speaker 2: Silverware on Sunday.
- 36:39Speaker 1: That was at a Favershion where they ever been running
- 36:41Speaker 1: this tournament for the most of the season. They finished
- 36:45Speaker 1: top of the championship Division one, so world un to
- 36:48Speaker 1: everybody there. But unfortunately the Division two championship team finished
- 36:52Speaker 1: bottom of their league, so you know they have a
- 36:55Speaker 1: bit of a mixed emotions. Really, wasn't it Okay? So
- 36:58Speaker 1: we're just going to play a few second of this
- 37:00Speaker 1: one electric light orchestra. I was hoping to play it all,
- 37:03Speaker 1: but I thought I'd do the football instead, So sit tight,
- 37:06Speaker 1: don't bring me down.
- 37:26Speaker 2: Well that's it for me.
- 37:27Speaker 1: I'll be back on Saturday with Ad. But listen out
- 37:31Speaker 1: for the next Thursday show. I've got doing a two
- 37:33Speaker 1: hour London Marathon special when I should be speaking to
- 37:36Speaker 1: four runners who have never run a marathon before. They're
- 37:39Speaker 1: running the London and they're raising money for charity.
- 37:43Speaker 2: So don't miss it by
- 37:44Speaker 1: For now online at Radio Folkston dot com and on
- 37:50Speaker 1: your smart speaker.
