- 0:01SPEAKER_03: It's burden source, but then it's a cut.
- 0:03SPEAKER_02: Fucking hell.
- 0:04SPEAKER_02: That's a rogue way to start the show because we are joined.
- 0:07SPEAKER_02: We are doing a collaboration this week.
- 0:08SPEAKER_02: It's beautiful.
- 0:09SPEAKER_02: With Breaking Through.
- 0:11SPEAKER_02: What's up?
- 0:12SPEAKER_02: What's going on, lads?
- 0:12SPEAKER_02: What up, Dolph?
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: Good morning, good evening, good afternoon.
- 0:17SPEAKER_01: Just in case what time the people are listening to this pod?
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: That's for going for you to find out.
- 0:22SPEAKER_03: I'd say stats-wise, they're not.
- 0:24SPEAKER_02: Um we're working on the marketing funnel at the moment, man.
- 0:31SPEAKER_03: Very top of at the moment.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 0:33SPEAKER_02: But we're at Big Sound Maxwell.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: We're with the boys.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: We're going to talk all things Australian music.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: For those that don't know, Breaking Through podcast, uh, all across tours that hit Australia.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: You'll have no doubt seen the lads' faces.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: New Zealand as well.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: We're focusing a lot on New Zealand as well.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: We're not leaving you out, unfortunately.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: You just don't get that many too.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so to all our New Zealand listeners.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Shout out to all my New Zealand supporters out there.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: New Zealand following Mike.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's good.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: He's good?
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's real good.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: What's his name?
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: Is he going to show or randomly follow you guys?
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: Well, for our American listeners, so you guys will be talking to American listeners.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: Oh, this will be our this will be our first time.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: We are um, I mean, only promoters and stuff get this, but we are 98.9% Australian and New Zealand.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: 8.9%.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: So we're brandable numbers.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: We're 59% US.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: Holy shit.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: But that that probably adds to you guys because like they hear an Australian accent and they're like, yeah, pretty good.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: Or they're like, what the fuck did you say?
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: I don't know any of those words.
- 1:38SPEAKER_03: That's what you played the song after.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: It's like we didn't hear it.
- 1:41SPEAKER_03: They're like, I like the song, I think.
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: I think it's something to do with the Australian heavy scene.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: The Australian heavy scene is a big fascination to everyone across the world, because it's arguably the best in the world.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: The Australian heavy scene is really in terms of a single scene.
- 1:56SPEAKER_02: It's the best metal scene.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: Single scene, right?
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: Because America's not.
- 2:00SPEAKER_03: I mean, America's is big, but like they're all it's so broken up.
- 2:03SPEAKER_03: Like you'll have the Midwest emo shit, and then you'll have the like the deep south heavy wage war kind of stuff.
- 2:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the sick.
- 2:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they're all sick, but like there's not as much crossover as in Australia.
- 2:14SPEAKER_03: Everyone's in the same scene.
- 2:15SPEAKER_03: Right people go to all those shows.
- 2:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: It's the density in the population.
- 2:20SPEAKER_02: Like the percentage of bands from the Australian population that are sick compared to American is a lot bigger.
- 2:26SPEAKER_03: We punch well over.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: I mean, we do that with all music, but we punch well over the heavy scene.
- 2:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: But we're gonna get into it, Maxwell.
- 2:32SPEAKER_02: Let's get into something new because there's a fucking bit on.
- 2:35SPEAKER_03: Bit on.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: But um, boys, what are you loving?
- 2:39SPEAKER_02: What are you listening to?
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: What's been spinning in your playlists last year?
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: You know what's crazy?
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: We're just talking about heavy music and how good that is.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: I'm going to maybe probably the indiest pop.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: Please, oh, please do.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: This is Martian.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: Dude, yeah.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: Bella Kay right now.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: Oh, dude.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: Oh, that new album.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: I said uh Tyson and I did a like halfway through, and like what we're looking forward to.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Bella Kay, like, if she's not on this year's Laneway lineup next year, she'll 100% be on it.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: She's like, I'm I can't speak.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: Her and Slater are gonna be fighting for my number one act this year.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: And um, yeah, Bella Kay, every song, like there's slightly different things in it.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: Her her lyricism, her her voice like steady at the moment, man.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: Um stop, oh dude, that those songs are so good.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: The first Bella Kay song I found was I Love It.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: I love it, I love it, I love it.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's um what's her name?
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: That's Camilla Cabella.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: But just like the But the buttons the song named I Love It, I love it, I love it anyway.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for Bella Kay, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: I love it three times.
- 3:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, three times by Childhood.
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: But yeah, well, not to be confused with yeah, yeah, Thrice by Chris Brown.
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, oh that's an act we all want to talk about.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Are we going one for one?
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Is that the struggle?
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: Well, Tyson, what are you listening to, man?
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: I'm listening, I I just got back from Europe.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: I went and saw My Chemical Romance twice while I was like the 10 uh the 20 year?
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the Black Parade Tour.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Is it amazing, bro?
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: It's the best that they've ever been, which is crazy.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: I saw both productions of the show, so they got like two different versions of the show going.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: I saw both.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: Oh that's why I thought that MCR wasn't on good things because of the production.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: Like what they to be fair, that's probably not sure.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: Um, but like I think they worked black magic on me because I have not been able to listen to anything else since.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: It's just been MCR.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: And has it just been Black Parade?
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: No, it's been Conventional Weapons.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: That little B-side sort of album that they did was a scrapped album that they released posthumously, I think.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: Um, but incredible, incredible stuff.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: That's um so good that we're co-hosts.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: We just go on one end, yeah, fucking another.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: This is what we need.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: Our listeners, they'll be like, well, okay, don't know, I'll explore, but then they'll be listening about fuck how good's my camera.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, if if you're luckily our I think the really good thing about our podcast is that we'll listen to a bit of everything.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: There's no genres that will unless you're in hard style, don't recommend me anything from that genre.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: Okay, so we're not gonna rabbit eight slides.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: Styles is uh, I don't remember his name.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: You're talking about restricted?
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: That's hard like tech.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: I can't say tech.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: There's yeah, I don't know.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: And it's all like highs.
- 5:29SPEAKER_03: Hard style is like do digital.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but it's like it's like Sarah Land Sarah Landry as well.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: Like she's like hard tech, I believe, as well.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: I'm not super versed in those genres because I don't like them.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: Um, but like, yeah, restricted.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: He's got like a song on TikTok.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: Well, um, there's a video of him, and I love the Avatar, like the animated series, and it's got a song where it's like um, I don't know if you guys like Avatar, but his big uh animal that he rides, oh yeah, the elephant thing.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he goes, he goes, yep, yep.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: So he's got a song where he goes, yep, yep, and then it just goes, and I'm like, dude, what the fuck are we doing?
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Like, everyone is losing their minds, and I'm like, you've just ruined Avatar for me.
- 6:13SPEAKER_02: Brenton did the green screen, restricted just ruined avatar.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: I just watched the.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: Then the music nation attacked.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: Fuck I just watched the new movie as well, and I'm just like, man, I don't really know what to watch.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: It's funny.
- 6:29SPEAKER_03: Shout out M9 Shamalon.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: Axel, what are you listening to?
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: Sam, I mean, we've talked about this a bit.
- 6:35SPEAKER_03: I cannot stop listening to DMAs at the moment after the new album.
- 6:38SPEAKER_03: Oh, it's the new album fucking slaps.
- 6:40SPEAKER_03: Then I went back and was like, I just want to listen to the old stuff.
- 6:42SPEAKER_03: And like, all of those albums are fucking haters.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: The I think I trust your boy's opinion, but like when I'm seeing everyone's media and they're like, this album's so good, this album's so good, I'm like, you say this about every album though.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: Do I trust you?
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: If you guys are saying it's good.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: Like I've I've heard a few songs on Triple J, obviously, um, Fair Future album.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: So I'm just like, it it does sound like you know, OG DMAs with a bit, you know, bring it bring bring it to the future a bit.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: So I'm like, if you guys saying, you know, it's a it's a good listen through, start with Killing Time, Heat in Park, and emails.
- 7:15SPEAKER_03: And you'll launch from that, you'll go full brit pop, you'll be wearing a fucking added ass in no time.
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:23SPEAKER_02: I am not the biggest DMAs listener in the world.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: Max gave me it for vinyl club last week.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this yeah, this week, yeah.
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: Whichever, whenever this drops.
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: Yesterday.
- 7:31SPEAKER_02: Um and it sounds very much like Hill's End.
- 7:34SPEAKER_02: It's sick.
- 7:35SPEAKER_02: Um should go listen to that interview if you're listening, just full plug.
- 7:39SPEAKER_03: Good luck listening to it.
- 7:40SPEAKER_03: It sounds like an ass.
- 7:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Max forgot to bring microphones.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: Uh sorry, DMAs.
- 7:45SPEAKER_02: Oh, Breaking Three would never forget to We just did that today.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: Forgot to turn the microphones on.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: I mean, our microphones working now because the lights are on.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: So yeah, we're all good.
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: Thanks for asking, Maxwell.
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: I'm listening to um.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: So what's been spinning in your playlists, mate?
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: Um, I haven't checked because we've changed the segment.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, true.
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: But I'm gonna shout out a few Australian artists.
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: Given we're at Big Sound, it's all about the underground upcoming artists.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: Or am I skipping ahead?
- 8:13SPEAKER_03: This segue is fucking red hot.
- 8:15SPEAKER_03: This is the best he's ever done.
- 8:17SPEAKER_02: I didn't actually know that was next.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: That's the whole rest of the podcast.
- 8:20SPEAKER_03: You know what?
- 8:21SPEAKER_03: I take it all back.
- 8:21SPEAKER_03: That was the worst segue he's ever done.
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: Sometimes I have a habit of looking really smooth, but it's because I've forgotten what we're talking about, and then I just mysteriously wind up going the way that we were meant to go.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: I don't think you feel smooth, but you just smile sometimes and hope for the best.
- 8:37SPEAKER_03: Not a wrinkle in that, Brian.
- 8:38SPEAKER_03: No, as I kick the table.
- 8:41SPEAKER_02: So Max has his thing.
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: He knocks our microphone stand every week.
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and we don't have them this week, and you've managed to kick the table.
- 8:49SPEAKER_02: No, we are gonna talk about Big Town a little bit because obviously it is a week, it's music heaven for anyone in Australia.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: Music schoolies, I like to call it.
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: Music schoolies, yes.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: And fuck, does everyone get on it?
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um probably more than schoolies.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: Where are the red frogs?
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: They'll be around.
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: They'll be around.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: Just wait.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: Give it time.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: But we're talking the best crop of I guess newcomers in the Australian scene, are we?
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think we are.
- 9:15SPEAKER_02: Well, it's you've got the run sheet.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: I don't have to.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: I do.
- 9:17SPEAKER_03: Well, I'll tell you what, we are talking the best run of yeah, cool.
- 9:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'll just I'll just cut that down.
- 9:20SPEAKER_03: Dad, that's what we're talking.
- 9:21SPEAKER_03: Tay the wheel.
- 9:22SPEAKER_03: That's enough.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: Um, why don't we throw over you guys first?
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: Alright, I'll kick it off.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: Um, have you boys ever listened to Echo Wave from the Gold Coast?
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: No, no, so they're like a dream pop rock band.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: Ooh, the vocalists sounds like John Lennon and Paul McCartney had a baby.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: And um he made a band that was very much like the Beatles, very much like Tamin Parla.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: Okay, and um great, great stuff.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: Um, I really dig their track Sad Dream, which has I think hit about like two million streams maybe on Spotify.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: Fuck yeah.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: Um classic, classic stuff, like very beach boys, very you know, Beatles, like really cool.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, fuck yeah.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: I'm already in.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: This sounds incredible.
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: All right, great record.
- 10:02SPEAKER_03: Sambo.
- 10:03SPEAKER_02: Well, I feel like I need to represent the heavy scene.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: Um shock.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: Who knew?
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: The camo pants didn't give it away.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: Um pincer plus out of Perth, fucking insane.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: What's pincer plus?
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: It's a pincer with a plus on the end.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: Oh, right.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: Like if they've written that out, that's pretty cool.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: No.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: Pincer with a plus.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: That's pretty cool.
- 10:24SPEAKER_02: I I'm just gonna call them pincer.
- 10:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think so heavy.
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: I feel like good metal at the moment just has a lot of energy and bounce to it.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: A little bit techie without being obnoxious, just very cool.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: I think they're gonna be big in the next little bit.
- 10:39SPEAKER_02: Maxwell?
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm gonna pass.
- 10:41SPEAKER_02: I was just playing the ball game.
- 10:43SPEAKER_03: Oh, wow, we're going round the table.
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Brenton.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: Um, Tarzan's gonna go again.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: It's up to you.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: Brisbane take away agency from the game.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I've got mine.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: I've I've shouted these boys before.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: Uh bottle bug out of, I believe they're the Gold Coast as well.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: Could be Brisbane, I'm not sure.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: Um, I follow these boys on TikTok, and my love of music started around like 2016-17 with like I I feel like that's when Australian Indian music was like so strong.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: You think of like peak sticky fingers, yeah, all that type of stuff, obviously just the music.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: But like I saw Shackles, it's their biggest song at the moment.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: Um, it has like almost a quarter of a million streams, and I saw a clip of them playing a backyard party or club or whatever, playing this song.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: I was getting the goosebumps going, this reminds me of when I was 18 listening to Sticky Fingers, like bringing us back to that sound where I think Australian Indy, like don't get me wrong, Australian music is is doing really well, but I think Australian Indy's fallen a bit back, and there's bands that need to bring us back.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: And I think Bottlebug is is one of those bands that they're they're you know, probably I don't know, 20, 21, 19, around that age.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: So it's like to to make songs like shackles, he sounds incredible, and um you're you're only gonna get better with age, your songwriter's gonna get better, your voice is gonna get better, the more views you get in that type of stuff, the production gets better.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: So to do this with what they have this early on, I think it was their first song they ever released.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: Fuck it, eh?
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: And it's at almost a quarter of a million views, uh, listens.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: So um yeah, I I think uh that they're gonna kill it.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: And I just bring the Aussie Indie back.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: I just when I think of Australian Indy, I think of festivals, I think of Splendor, I think Falls, I think of Groovin back in the day, and time to wake up, time to take your pill.
- 12:43SPEAKER_01: That's for somber.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, so absolutely love those guys.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: But um 78 damage exclusive.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: I've got another one of 550 as well.
- 12:55SPEAKER_03: I've done that one.
- 12:56SPEAKER_03: We need to fucking hustle about it.
- 12:58SPEAKER_03: I was used to break.
- 12:59SPEAKER_03: There it is, we've got 10 minutes.
- 13:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, next.
- 13:02SPEAKER_03: Okay, Harry Hayes, producer out of 700.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: Yes, he's on he's on the um uh Spilt Milk.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: Oh, is he on Spilt Milk as well?
- 13:09SPEAKER_03: Is he on Spilt Milk line?
- 13:10SPEAKER_03: He's on a lineup.
- 13:11SPEAKER_03: He's definitely on Lost Paradise.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: He might may also be on other on other lineups.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: I believe he's on Spilt Milk.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: Please cut this if he's not.
- 13:17SPEAKER_03: And also don't look at me, I've got no fucking idea.
- 13:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 13:20SPEAKER_03: Um, he like we've been talking on the show recently about the intersection between like hyper pop and also that like hope core EDM that's like kind of happening at the moment.
- 13:28SPEAKER_03: And I think uh Harry Harry Hayes is dropping stuff that's right in that niche.
- 13:32SPEAKER_03: Um he dropped this EP last year called Before It Goes.
- 13:35SPEAKER_03: It was not genuinely, it was only six songs, but it was no skips.
- 13:38SPEAKER_03: It was one of the best releases of 2025.
- 13:40SPEAKER_03: I brought pretty much every single song to the show, it was fucking incredible.
- 13:43SPEAKER_03: And then he's followed it up this year with a few like single drops.
- 13:45SPEAKER_03: And I think he's gearing up for something big, maybe a full album or uh, you know, a mix a mixtape or something like that.
- 13:50SPEAKER_03: But he's just he balances like all of these different EDM sounds without sounding like too much.
- 13:57SPEAKER_03: And yeah, I I'm I'm fucking stoked.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: Did you did you see the videos going around?
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: Because there's obviously a Bulldogs player called Harry Hayes as well.
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: Oh and uh like uh NRL player called Harry Hayes, and some of the NRL creators were like, Did you see he was on the lineup?
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: Like, so he's he during the offseason, he's playing festival.
- 14:15SPEAKER_03: I mean, I don't want to cast shade on uh Harry Hayes, the producer.
- 14:18SPEAKER_03: I don't know if he's got the mass to play for Canterbury, but let's see.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think have any foodie players ever spun off into doing DJing?
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: I feel like that's a good move for not DJing, but oh, I don't know if in the AFL they did.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: Daniel Merritt um was a DJ for a little bit.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: There's there's actually uh a ex um North Queensland player that is at this big sound or was at the last big sound, he quit Cowboys to do music.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: I didn't know Justin.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: Ah, Justin.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: Jonathan Thurston's work's gone.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: I I aborted it as soon as I got it wrong.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: His name is Young Maney, I believe.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: Young Maney.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: So he quit he quit NRL to follow rap.
- 14:59SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay, all right.
- 15:00SPEAKER_03: So and I believe he's at a big sound.
- 15:01SPEAKER_03: Shout out the towns.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure he was on a big town lineup, either this year or last year.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: Okay, well, second round, it's awesome.
- 15:10SPEAKER_03: Back to you.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: Um so there was a there was a time probably about last year where I started getting really into Melbourne bands because our agency was booking a couple of shows down there.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: And I found this artist called Mika James.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: And um, she was in this band called the Vovos, and she's kind of spun off to do her own solo work, and it's like very like country, folky, like sort of.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: She's got this single called Nonish Trolley that I really, really love.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: And she followed it up with this other one called Strangers in Live, and it's just very urethra.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: Is it urethral?
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: Urethr.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: What?
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: Eurythr.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: That's correct.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: I mean X R down.
- 15:52SPEAKER_03: I can't do like a clinarial.
- 16:01SPEAKER_03: I think it's a video's coming down, and uh, I think you can see the impact.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: That's sorry, Mickey James.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: That is crazy, and then I've got you caught up in summary don't ub.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: Euphoric.
- 16:19SPEAKER_03: That's 10 out of fucking ten.
- 16:21SPEAKER_03: Dude, it's the first day you picked out, man.
- 16:24SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's made me cry.
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: Dude, I'd hate to say it, but I think we've got our clip too.
- 16:30SPEAKER_02: Strong's dreams, dude.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: I can't believe you described urethral.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: I think I think you'll say in the click as well.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: Ethereal.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: Ethereal was all I was thinking of.
- 16:44SPEAKER_04: Ethereal.
- 16:45SPEAKER_04: Holy A bowl of urethral.
- 16:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we we so the our running joke on the show is Sam will say something is ethereal, and I'll say it's a bowler, it's a bowl ethereal.
- 16:54SPEAKER_03: And uh unfortunately that keeps coming up on people's things as a bowler of the disease, not a bowl of, and um, that goes poorly.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: We um we had a lovely Brisbane artist who I'm a massive fan of called Niche.
- 17:05SPEAKER_02: Um if you're into Sarah's ethyl cane, like you'll love that stuff.
- 17:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, she shared the clip of our podcast where I was like, oh, her new song is so ethereal.
- 17:14SPEAKER_02: And Max goes, Ebola.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: And then she's put the Spotify captions in there, so it just says, Oh, niche is so ethereal.
- 17:23SPEAKER_02: It says E-B O L O.
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: I mean urethral.
- 17:27SPEAKER_03: Urethrals.
- 17:28SPEAKER_03: Urethral's a new one.
- 17:29SPEAKER_03: That's a bowl, a bowl of urethral.
- 17:31SPEAKER_03: That's fucking beautiful.
- 17:33SPEAKER_02: It sounds like something my mum takes for a gut health.
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: Oh fuck.
- 17:38SPEAKER_03: Fucking hell.
- 17:38SPEAKER_03: Sambo.
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: Heavensgate are fucking incredible.
- 17:43SPEAKER_02: They are it's hard to describe metal.
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: Where are they from?
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: Hey?
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: Where are they from?
- 17:48SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: Um, Melbourne.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: I think they're from Melbourne.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: Australia.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: They're obviously, yeah, yeah.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: Just making sure we've got at least one location.
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: I think they're from the East Coast.
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: Right, there we go.
- 18:01SPEAKER_02: That was West on the camera, so that's um very heavy, very um spacey.
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: It feels like an atomic bomb whenever they drop breakdown.
- 18:10SPEAKER_02: It's just but yes, Heaven's Gate, yeah.
- 18:13SPEAKER_02: Very they're on the up.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: They've just announced a headline tour around Australia.
- 18:17SPEAKER_02: They just featured on a song with Weak Hammer's Romans.
- 18:19SPEAKER_02: If you're interested in that more like American metal core stuff, um we brought it to the show last week.
- 18:25SPEAKER_02: They're they're on the up for sure.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: Brighton.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: Is it my turn?
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: It's your turn.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: Uh an actor is is big at Big Sound this year.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: And uh when we arrived today, saw them within the first 15 minutes, you reckon, Tyson?
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: Uh, Jeb Lighton.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: He is, I think, gonna be one of our biggest pop stars in the next 10 years for Australia.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: Just I haven't seen him before.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: I'm seeing him for example for the first time.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: Like, he uses the mics.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: Oh, I remember 2000 mics.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: He's got like a his American accent sounds very like the American accent that he puts on.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: He he like we all if you're a singer, everyone does it.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um like it just sounds very 2000, sounds nostalgic.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: His songwriting is so good, he's had a moment on TikTok already, he's had songs go viral just because of his lyricism.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: And I listen to his lyricism, and I go, There's not anyone that I can pinpoint that's doing this in pop right now.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: And um, yeah, super nice dude, keen to see him live, and I think it's um like I talk about artists having a point of difference, especially in pop, and especially in Australia.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: Like, you you've got to show who you are and be a standout.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: And I think Jeff Lighton does that really well.
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: And um, from from the only online stuff that I've seen, I'm keen to see it in real life, and that's what kind of big town gives us the opportunity to do is like I've been on this artist for about 12 months listening to their stuff, and I'm just like, let's let's see it in a room of like a couple hundred people because in in in a few years' time, pull up in that man.
- 20:03SPEAKER_03: It's so good to be able to turn around and be like, yeah, I saw my big town.
- 20:05SPEAKER_03: But yeah, like me and six people be that flex.
- 20:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's so many acts like that in in the past.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: Like I think of I think of Dice, yeah, I think of Rum Jungle, um, I think of acts like that that you know for the Australian indie scene, that they they've been here before, and uh rah-rah vibe is another one.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: So like they they've all played here, and it's just like this is the best place, this is the best thing about being in industry.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: It's like you're around everyone in industry seeing the acts that are about to blow up.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and the strike rate's crazy.
- 20:36SPEAKER_02: From a heavy perspective, we've seen Polaris play here.
- 20:39SPEAKER_02: Yep, we've seen you've seen Soho play here.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: I saw Soho many years ago.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: I saw Endless Heights here who became speed.
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: Like it's fucking crazy.
- 20:47SPEAKER_03: That'd be crazy.
- 20:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's um yeah.
- 20:49SPEAKER_03: Fuck, I love examples.
- 20:50SPEAKER_03: God damn it.
- 20:51SPEAKER_03: Um, my next one is from Right Hand Brizzy, Felony.
- 20:55SPEAKER_03: Um that's a good shout.
- 20:58SPEAKER_03: Like, just that perfect line between like something that the the goth kids can get into.
- 21:03SPEAKER_03: It's a little bit post-punk, a little bit the cure, but it's also like just fun indie music that you can like, you know, just anyone can listen to and get it.
- 21:09SPEAKER_03: It's accessible.
- 21:10SPEAKER_03: I think you can stand at the back of the room and cross your arms like Sam would do, or you can be me and I do that as well.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: Apart from Slater was around there, fucking downs.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: But I'm usually at the back going like I might be having the best time when I'm you won't see it.
- 21:22SPEAKER_02: No, I'm trying to nurse my sore back, so like same.
- 21:26SPEAKER_02: The smaller your back.
- 21:27SPEAKER_02: Aren't we all fucking old as fuck?
- 21:30SPEAKER_03: No, it happened to me when I was like 21 as well.
- 21:32SPEAKER_03: I just pretended that I was tough.
- 21:34SPEAKER_03: I I mean, I'm in the fucking I as much as I can be up in the pit trying to have a dance until my back fucks out.
- 21:39SPEAKER_03: But you should ask Max about his backbone.
- 21:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, let's not get into it.
- 21:42SPEAKER_03: But Tyson, how's your back?
- 21:44SPEAKER_03: Fine.
- 21:44SPEAKER_03: You're the only person with a good back.
- 21:46SPEAKER_03: It's holding up.
- 21:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's holding up my legs.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: I came into the podcast the other week and I like literally couldn't walk.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: Jesus Christ.
- 21:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, my back's fucked.
- 21:53SPEAKER_03: Your back's carrying all our backs.
- 21:55SPEAKER_02: If you need wedges, um, Max knows first of all, they're called lifts.
- 21:58SPEAKER_03: Uh, and second of all, I said that to say on the podcast and fucking hell.
- 22:03SPEAKER_03: Can't go back from that.
- 22:05SPEAKER_03: But so I think felony, like Midnight Money was the EP that they dropped last year, and it's just non-stop.
- 22:11SPEAKER_03: We talked about it in vinyl club one time, and it's just it's it's that perfect, like you can dance or you can not, you can be sad or not.
- 22:17SPEAKER_03: It feels kind of sexy, but it also feels like it's just sad and mourning.
- 22:20SPEAKER_03: Like it's it's a bit of everything to everyone, and I am really excited to see where felony go.
- 22:26SPEAKER_03: It's just yeah, they're so good.
- 22:27SPEAKER_03: It's a really good shout.
- 22:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think um stop it.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: That's uh they've been on my radar for ages, but I think I think they're one of those acts where I think we do a lot of that in Australia, where it's like there's acts that should have way more fans and eyes on them, and for some reason there just isn't.
- 22:47SPEAKER_01: And it's like there's artists that are just cutting through now after like four or five years, and it's like, man, 12 like 12 months in you guys should have had the the following that you deserve.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: So, like I don't know if like that's just our scene or if if if that's a problem all around, but like I think Elnie's one of those arcs.
- 23:08SPEAKER_03: I hope it's not just our scene, like I hope that everyone's getting their flowers, but I also am glad that like there's that next crop coming up.
- 23:16SPEAKER_03: Like we always know that there's gonna be another, like the kids are alright, you know what I mean.
- 23:19SPEAKER_03: What do you think?
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: Obviously, going off podcast here, but what do you think is like in 10 years' time, what do you reckon the next genre is gonna be that's like fucking killing it?
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: Because like 10 years ago, if you look 10 years ago, Indy was killing it.
- 23:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, indie, Indy was like the bands had never been bigger.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: You think of Ocean Alley, like Ocean Alley would have made so much money during that time, and it's like now, probably I'm not a you know great, but it's not my favorite genre.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: Dance is the biggest genre here.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: So it's like you look at all all our festivals, like the ones that do really well, that sell out well, is all the genres of dance.
- 23:54SPEAKER_01: So what's the what's the genre that's gonna you know really kick it off in the next 10 years?
- 23:58SPEAKER_03: I I think hardcore's having a moment, and whether that's gonna last 10 years, I can't predict that.
- 24:03SPEAKER_03: It's having a moment, I think, that's gonna be the next two or three years.
- 24:06SPEAKER_02: I think metal in general is having a massive blow up because I think here or internationally, both, both, yeah.
- 24:12SPEAKER_02: The size of crowds that Australian bands are playing overseas is insane.
- 24:18SPEAKER_02: Like Thornhill are massive, like they're gonna be enormous, they're gonna be the next big Australian band.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: Um I think in general from COVID, because people were so void of live music, you've got dance and metal having resurgence because people want that live music experience again, but they want it to be energetic version, extreme version of what they lacked for so many years.
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:45SPEAKER_02: So like we're biased, obviously, but um yeah, I think I think rock in general is gonna have a resurgence.
- 24:52SPEAKER_02: It's not necessarily metal because we've seen dance, we've seen country, and then in the States, rock is having a bit of a resurgence.
- 24:59SPEAKER_03: Um But even like with with like someone like Slater or Nina Girachi, like it's the extreme version of the most like raw, like glitchy people want something wild, and I think that's the next step.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: And I feel like everyone that's leading each genre is gone a bit experimental where they're doing stuff you don't expect.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: So it's kind of an ex it's becoming an exciting time again to be a music fan, especially listening to Triple J.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: Like it became so stale for a while, yeah, and now I feel like it's starting to pick up again.
- 25:28SPEAKER_02: It feels like to that point, like everyone's experimenting.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: I don't necessarily think, and this will sound wanky, but like in 10 years, the genre that might be massive might be a blend of a few different things.
- 25:38SPEAKER_02: That's a good point.
- 25:39SPEAKER_02: Because I look at the lineup behind you, like one of the bands that is being talked about the most is Blinder, and they are shoe gays, new metal with a bit of like a tiny bit of pop spring to like make it work, and they just toured with Ocean Grove, but they could tour with DMAs if they wanted to.
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: Like they are just that blend.
- 26:00SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I think it's gonna be a bit of a mix.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: So you think rock type?
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: I think rock as well.
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think it's gonna be different factions of rock.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: I think everything's a 20-year cycle, you know.
- 26:11SPEAKER_01: I think next two to three years, I think country's gonna be the biggest.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: I think the biggest festivals in Australia will be country, yeah.
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: Um, and I think promoters have kind of seen that.
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: I think that's why Strummingbird, you know, it's a it's a great idea.
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: Um, long haul is a great idea, maybe not the time for it right now, but I think promoters are seeing that like this is where Australia is going.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: And um, yeah, I'm seeing a lot of um fans, and it's like they'll spend the money, man.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: That like country fans have the money, so it's like if I was a promoter, that's that's where I'd be looking.
- 26:46SPEAKER_01: I'd be I'd be trying to get the the Ella Langley's, the the Morgan Wallins of the world to to to come and headline.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: Like imagine getting Ella Langley on a headline right now.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: Insane.
- 26:56SPEAKER_03: Do do you think country having a resurgence is a soft launch for rock?
- 26:59SPEAKER_03: As in, like it's rock adjacent, it's guitar-driven, there's country music that essentially is rock music.
- 27:05SPEAKER_03: Like you start along that line, and then you go, I want something bit heavier, bit heavier, bit heavier.
- 27:09SPEAKER_03: Suddenly you're in rock.
- 27:10SPEAKER_01: But we talk about music having a cycle all the time, and it's like festivals have had you know hard times of it over the last couple of years, but it'll come back.
- 27:17SPEAKER_01: It won't, I don't think we'll ever get to to where we were, but it'll come back.
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: It's the same with like um, you know, indie music will come back.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, rap is consistently there, but then there's gonna be there's gonna be an artist that's just gonna fucking shoot through.
- 27:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like if you get like another childish gambino or something like that, equivalent, it'll shoot through.
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: Pop's always up there, but I think like music festivals are to cycle, and I'd like I don't I don't I don't hate that I'm not in festival programming because imagine trying to guess that you know 12 months in the time um in the future.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I think I think probably country for me.
- 27:51SPEAKER_02: I think yeah, country's definitely gonna dominate.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: I do think, I mean, we've seen pop artists look at Post Malone, he's a perfect example.
- 27:59SPEAKER_02: Like he does a country album, but then he also did uh an Alice in Chains cover, like with and it sounded incredible, yeah.
- 28:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I think we're probably gonna see a shift, it'll be like people shift into country.
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: We've seen artists like Halsey release pretty much an emo album.
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, too.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: I think we're gonna find artists go back to like heavier roots a little bit.
- 28:20SPEAKER_02: Um, I'll tell you guys off air, there's a massive tour coming early 2027 for the dad rock fans out there.
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: Um I'm very excited, Max isn't.
- 28:28SPEAKER_02: But I yeah, I think it's gonna be in that blend, in that world somewhere, and then the most successful bands will be the ones that make it different.
- 28:36SPEAKER_02: Hello.
- 28:37SPEAKER_02: I think the podcast might be done.
- 28:38SPEAKER_03: Hello.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: No, you we we were literally just finishing, just as you're just checking it.
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, we're literally interrupting.
- 28:46SPEAKER_03: No, we're good.
- 28:47SPEAKER_03: Well, on that note, um Yeah, thanks, boys.
- 28:49SPEAKER_01: Thanks for having us on.
- 28:50SPEAKER_01: Thanks for jumping in.
- 28:51SPEAKER_01: It's been a pleasure to have you here.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, thank you so much, guys.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: This has been fun.
