Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Dealing With the Desire or Craving Related to Food
Transcript
- 0:00Vast numbers of people face the difficulty of the craving for
- 0:04food, whether in the form of eating more than their body
- 0:07requires or eating foods that carry little nutritional
- 0:11benefit, but which represent large caloric content or which
- 0:17satisfy a particular craving for a specific taste.
- 0:22There are substantial downsides to indulgence in food cravings,
- 0:26including unnecessary weight gain and the health impacts that
- 0:30come along with that. For the spiritual seeker, the
- 0:34physical impacts are just a part of the concern.
- 0:38The more an individual fixates on food, obtaining food,
- 0:42preparing food, enjoying food, the more it can act as a
- 0:46distraction to his spiritual sadhna.
- 0:50The concentration is diverted and time is invested in the food
- 0:54craving cycle that could and should be better spent in a
- 0:58focus on the development of the spiritual opening and its
- 1:03integration into the being. There are many subtle triggers
- 1:07for the desire for food or the craving of specific foods.
- 1:11Some of these are the result of food being treated as an
- 1:14emotional support, a response to stress, or as some kind of
- 1:19reward mechanism trained into one as a child.
- 1:23In some cases, food represents a sublimation of an otherwise
- 1:27suppressed sexual energy which pushes the second chakra, the
- 1:32seat of the lower vital, with that unfulfilled energy rising
- 1:36slightly from the first chakra but being prevented from its
- 1:40normal outlet by the action of suppression.
- 1:45In some instances, cravings arise as a result of changes in
- 1:49hormonal balance or response to a stressful situation.
- 1:53The food acts to manage the reactions and in some cases
- 1:57helps to reduce the residual stress.
- 2:01As we host a population of bacteria in our digestive
- 2:05system, there are occasions when signals from this bacterial
- 2:10colony are sent for nourishment it needs or craves.
- 2:15In some instances, the vital enjoys the taste of the food as
- 2:19part of its normal human means of satisfaction.
- 2:22In the absence of the higher and more refined forms of enjoyment
- 2:27found in the experience of spiritual bliss, the physical
- 2:33body is able to send signals to the brain about its needs for
- 2:36specific nutrients. So it is useful to be able to
- 2:41stand back and observe the various desires or cravings that
- 2:45arise and thereby distinguish the differential causes of the
- 2:50desire or craving and respond appropriately as part of the
- 2:54process of managing the vital and physical nature and aiding
- 2:59in the eventual transformation of the body vehicle.
- 3:04With the eventual development of the Super mental manifestation
- 3:08in the human being, vast changes in bodily functionality have
- 3:12been envisioned, including changes that might radically
- 3:16alter our relationship with food or even our need for obtaining
- 3:21nourishment through food. While this change is apparently
- 3:25not imminent, it is useful to recognize that past habits of
- 3:30interaction do not necessarily determine the shape of the
- 3:34future, Sri Aurobindo observes Quote.
- 3:39It is the attachment to food, the greed and ignorant eagerness
- 3:43for it making it an unduly important thing in the life,
- 3:47that is contrary to the spirit of yoga.
- 3:51To be aware that something is pleasant to the palate is not
- 3:55wrong only. One must have no desire or
- 3:58hankering for it, no exultation in getting it, no displeasure or
- 4:04regret at not getting it. One must be calm and equal, not
- 4:09getting upset or dissatisfied when the food is not tasty or
- 4:14not in abundance, eating the fixed amount that is necessary,
- 4:19not less or more. There should be neither
- 4:22eagerness nor repugnance to be always thinking about food, and
- 4:28troubling the mind is quite the wrong way of getting rid of the
- 4:32food desire. Put the food element in the
- 4:35right place in the life, in a small corner, and don't
- 4:38concentrate on it, but on other things.
