Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Creating An 'I Can Do Hard Things' Hour
Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: What's going on Hurdler's Emily a body here. You're listening
- 0:22Speaker 1: to five Minute Friday. I am bringing forth to the
- 0:27Speaker 1: feed something that I shared yesterday via my Instagram, and
- 0:34Speaker 1: that is the I am overwhelmed I can do hard
- 0:39Speaker 1: things hour. There's probably a quicker way to sum that up.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Let's go with I can do hard things hour. So
- 0:48Speaker 1: basically what happens for me is every week there is
- 0:52Speaker 1: a list of items that I am aware of that
- 0:57Speaker 1: I am also putting off. I'll put the I'm on
- 1:00Speaker 1: my to do list, and every day, perhaps because the
- 1:03Speaker 1: item itself is overwhelming, I will go through my to
- 1:07Speaker 1: do list and not check off that particular item, and
- 1:12Speaker 1: in doing that, I recognize that the reason I am
- 1:15Speaker 1: not checking it off is because again, it is overwhelming.
- 1:20Speaker 1: So what I've started to do each and every week
- 1:23Speaker 1: is set aside between ninety minutes and two hours to
- 1:27Speaker 1: get this thing done, to check off the things on
- 1:31Speaker 1: my to do list that make me feel questionable, that
- 1:35Speaker 1: make me feel as though I'm not capable, which is
- 1:38Speaker 1: entirely not true. And by setting aside this time to
- 1:43Speaker 1: do the things that feel difficult, I am reminded not
- 1:46Speaker 1: only that I am capable of hard things, but I
- 1:50Speaker 1: am also the person that's in charge. And gosh, what
- 1:55Speaker 1: a great reminder, right, What a reminder that even in
- 1:59Speaker 1: the moments that we feel overwhelmed, we have the opportunity
- 2:03Speaker 1: to show up, to do, to complete. And so upon
- 2:09Speaker 1: sharing this on my social media yesterday, I wanted to
- 2:13Speaker 1: make sure that I brought it into the feed, this
- 2:15Speaker 1: idea of the hour where you handle all of the
- 2:18Speaker 1: things that make you feel maybe perhaps even lesser than
- 2:23Speaker 1: what happens if you tackle all of those things. What
- 2:25Speaker 1: happens if you are reminded of your capability. What happens
- 2:29Speaker 1: if you just get it done? I'll tell you what happens.
- 2:34Speaker 1: You are reminded that you are capable, you can do
- 2:37Speaker 1: hard things. And when all of those things that are
- 2:41Speaker 1: prevalent in the moment are no longer on your to
- 2:44Speaker 1: do list, you are undeniably in a position to feel
- 2:50Speaker 1: more free, to do more with your time, to be
- 2:53Speaker 1: less stressed.
- 2:54Speaker 2: And what a beautiful gift that is.
- 2:58Speaker 1: And so this week, for a five minute for I
- 3:00Speaker 1: I ask you this question, what is on your overwhelming
- 3:04Speaker 1: list and are you capable of setting aside that hour
- 3:07Speaker 1: to make it feel less? So how can you combat
- 3:14Speaker 1: your eye? Can do hard things? List and show up
- 3:18Speaker 1: not only for yourself, but then in turn for the
- 3:21Speaker 1: people that you care about, because your bandwidth feels again
- 3:25Speaker 1: within your control.
- 3:28Speaker 2: And now a listener question.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Hi Emily, my name is Betty, listening in from my Rubi, Kenya,
- 3:36Speaker 3: and I really love your podcast. My question for you
- 3:39Speaker 3: today is how do you bounce back after being sick?
- 3:43Speaker 3: How do you get back to exercising? How do you
- 3:46Speaker 3: pick up from my left off? I'm struggling to get
- 3:49Speaker 3: back to exercising after a period of being sick, so
- 3:53Speaker 3: please could you share some tips on how you do it?
- 3:55Speaker 3: How do you get back to exercising after a period
- 3:58Speaker 3: of sickness? Thanks again, I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Bye Yo.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Can I just have a fan moment about Betty? Wow,
- 4:09Speaker 1: It's never lost on me that there are literally hurdlers
- 4:12Speaker 1: all over the world. So thank you so much to
- 4:15Speaker 1: listening in to this thing that I create from my
- 4:19Speaker 1: Brooklyn studio.
- 4:20Speaker 2: All the way over in Kenya. It means the world
- 4:22Speaker 2: to me.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Yes, exercising after being sick can be really frustrating. I
- 4:28Speaker 1: have certainly been there before, and your feelings are so valid, Betty.
- 4:33Speaker 2: I want you to know that now.
- 4:35Speaker 1: First and foremost, I will tell you to have grace. Right,
- 4:38Speaker 1: your body is so intuitive, and when you feel tired,
- 4:43Speaker 1: when you feel run down, that is because you are
- 4:46Speaker 1: in a state of repair. So listen to your body,
- 4:49Speaker 1: give yourself the rest that you need to come back
- 4:53Speaker 1: stronger than before, and then make sure that as you're
- 4:58Speaker 1: getting back into the swing of things, no matter what
- 5:00Speaker 1: you're chosen exercise modality, maybe that you are giving yourself grace.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Life is lifing right.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Your body is doing the best that it can in
- 5:11Speaker 1: this situation. So yes, you may want to jump back
- 5:15Speaker 1: into the swing of things, but recognize that you're doing
- 5:19Speaker 1: the best you can with what you have. So be gentle,
- 5:23Speaker 1: have grace, and slowly move back into an exercise routine
- 5:29Speaker 1: that you know that you are capable of. If you're
- 5:32Speaker 1: the kind of person that's going out and running for
- 5:34Speaker 1: thirty minutes every day, maybe this means after some sort
- 5:38Speaker 1: of an illness, you're dialing back the pace a little bit.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Maybe this means that after a cold or gosh, the
- 5:47Speaker 1: last few years after having COVID, you're listening to your
- 5:50Speaker 1: body and trying something different. If you're a runner and
- 5:54Speaker 1: running feels hard, try cycling. If you're someone that loves
- 5:57Speaker 1: weightlifting but the weights that you were putting up before
- 6:00Speaker 1: feel absolutely impossible, then listen to that. Listen to your body.
- 6:06Speaker 1: It is telling you all of the information that you
- 6:09Speaker 1: need to know and have grace knowing that we have
- 6:13Speaker 1: ideally some time. Your gut isn't lying to you. Do
- 6:18Speaker 1: the best you can with what you have and move
- 6:21Speaker 1: forward with as I said before, a little bit of grace.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Make sure you're following along with me over on socialis
- 6:29Speaker 1: at Emily a Body and also at Hurdle Podcast another
- 6:33Speaker 1: Hurdle Conquered. Catch you guys next time.
