Transcript
- Luna: Lucas, I am so ready for another episode. You know what I'm craving? A coffee. But like, a real coffee, not the instant stuff. Lucas: Oh, I hear that. And speaking of coffee, I thought today we could learn how to order one in Swahili. I mean, we've done ordering drinks before, but coffee is its own beautiful thing. Luna: Yes! I love that. And you know, Fexingo has been helping me make actual progress with this language. Coffee to go with my Swahili? Perfect combo. Lucas: Absolutely. And since we keep this show ad-free by choice, if you want to support that, you can find us at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Anyway, back to the coffee. Luna: Right. So how do I say 'I want coffee'? Lucas: Simple: Nataka kahawa. Nataka means 'I want', kahawa is 'coffee'. Let's hear you try it. Luna: Nataka kahawa. That feels good. Nataka kahawa. Lucas: Perfect. Now, if you want coffee with milk, you say: Kahawa na maziwa, tafadhali. Maziwa is milk. Try that. Luna: Kahawa na maziwa, tafadhali. So I'm adding 'na' for 'with' and 'maziwa' for milk. Got it. Lucas: Exactly. And if you want it without sugar, you say: Kahawa bila sukari. Bila means 'without'. Sukari is sugar. Luna: Kahawa bila sukari. That's good for my diet. But what if I want to specify the number of coffees? Like, one coffee? Lucas: Great question. You can say: Kahawa moja, tafadhali. Moja is 'one'. So one coffee, please. Luna: Kahawa moja, tafadhali. Easy. And then I'd say 'asante sana' for thank you very much, right? Lucas: You've got it. Asante sana. So let's put it all together in a scene. You walk into a café, and you say: Kahawa moja, tafadhali. Kahawa na maziwa. Luna: So I'd say: Kahawa moja, tafadhali. Kahawa na maziwa. And then 'Asante sana' when they hand it over. Lucas: Exactly. Let's do a quick role-play. I'll be the barista. You order. Luna: Okay. Kahawa moja, tafadhali. Kahawa na maziwa. Lucas: That's perfect. And I'd say 'Asante' and hand you your coffee. Luna: Asante sana. I love that I can now order coffee in Swahili. I feel so fancy. Lucas: You should. And remember, if you want to support us and keep the show ad-free, check out buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Practice these phrases, and we'll see you next time for more Swahili.
