- 0:00Speaker 1: Mister New York Mark Simone on seven.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Wo r Well entertainment reporter Roger Friedman. He runs the
- 0:08Speaker 2: great website Showbiz for one one dot com. A lot
- 0:11Speaker 2: of good stories, new stuff every day, Showbiz for one
- 0:14Speaker 2: one dot com. Roger Friedman.
- 0:17Speaker 1: How you doing, I'm great?
- 0:19Speaker 3: How are you this morning?
- 0:20Speaker 2: I'm good? Hey. Oscar nominations came out this week. What
- 0:23Speaker 2: do you think?
- 0:24Speaker 1: Well?
- 0:25Speaker 3: I think they were. There were too many surprises. There
- 0:29Speaker 3: were things I was happy about. The big snub was Wicked.
- 0:35Speaker 3: The second Wicked movie got nothing.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Why is that well?
- 0:40Speaker 3: Because I think the Academy thought they got a lot
- 0:42Speaker 3: last year. Yeah, and that's enough already, and it was
- 0:46Speaker 3: basically the same movie. So ari other Grande's fans were
- 0:51Speaker 3: very upset that she wasn't nominated for Best Supporting Actress,
- 0:55Speaker 3: but she you know, she did well at the Golden
- 0:57Speaker 3: Globes and I think that was appropriate. We have a
- 1:01Speaker 3: lot of great nominees. I'm really excited about Ethan Hawke
- 1:05Speaker 3: being nominated Best Actor for Blue Moon, which is just
- 1:10Speaker 3: a terrific little film, and of course Timothy Challomany and
- 1:14Speaker 3: Leonardo DiCaprio are in that. But the big news is
- 1:17Speaker 3: that Sinners has really built up a following. They had
- 1:22Speaker 3: sixteen nominations, the most ever for any movie.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Wow, now, why is that good?
- 1:28Speaker 1: Yeah, you haven't seen it.
- 1:30Speaker 2: No, I see one movie every ten years.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Sinners is Actually it's an interesting movie because it's sort
- 1:38Speaker 3: of like a vampire movie in a way. It's a
- 1:41Speaker 3: horror film, but it's not a horror film. It's a
- 1:44Speaker 3: film about social studies sort of. And music gorgeous R
- 1:50Speaker 3: and B and blues music from Tennessee, from Memphis, and
- 1:57Speaker 3: it's just a great, great film.
- 1:59Speaker 1: And Michael B.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Jordan plays two parts in it and he was nominated
- 2:03Speaker 3: for He plays the twin brothers and he was nominated
- 2:07Speaker 3: for Best Actor, and they got del Roy Lindo was
- 2:10Speaker 3: nominated for Best Supporting Actor at seventy three. It's his
- 2:12Speaker 3: first nomination ever and he's such a fabulous actor. So
- 2:17Speaker 3: I think that Sinners may be a spoiler when we
- 2:20Speaker 3: get to the actual show.
- 2:22Speaker 2: What about my favorite movie, Marty Supreme.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Marty Supreme did very well and Timothy Challamy is nominated
- 2:30Speaker 3: for playing Marty and I think he's probably going to win.
- 2:35Speaker 3: So your old friend Marty can be very proud from
- 2:39Speaker 3: the grave that things have worked out so well for
- 2:42Speaker 3: that movie, which is now at about seventy five million dollars,
- 2:44Speaker 3: which is pretty good.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:46Speaker 2: So but what about Best Picture? You don't think it'll
- 2:48Speaker 2: win Best Picture?
- 2:50Speaker 3: No, I think it's either one Battle after another, which
- 2:52Speaker 3: is sort of my choice. I lean toward that or
- 2:55Speaker 3: Sinners one.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Or the other.
- 2:59Speaker 3: The other great movie is Hamnet, but I think that
- 3:01Speaker 3: these other two are in overwhelm it.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Yeah, so how many people what percentage actually still goes
- 3:09Speaker 2: to a movie theater rather than streaming, actually goes and
- 3:12Speaker 2: sits in the theater and watches movies.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Now you know what it's The box office is way
- 3:16Speaker 3: up from last year.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:19Speaker 3: I think people found a lot of these movies very,
- 3:22Speaker 3: very enjoyable and have made an effort to go to theater.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Which is interesting because people were saying, oh, theaters are over.
- 3:29Speaker 3: You know, Netflix is going to buy Warner Brothers and
- 3:31Speaker 3: then they're going to put all their movies on Netflix.
- 3:34Speaker 3: But no, actually the box office is up year to year.
- 3:38Speaker 2: So yeah, and if you haven't been to a theater
- 3:40Speaker 2: while many of them now they have these reclining leather.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Seats, they got great seats.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Liquor licenses, they got more food, candy, waiters, waitresses. It's
- 3:47Speaker 2: pretty good.
- 3:48Speaker 3: I have to be careful about that because if I
- 3:50Speaker 3: get into that reclining seat, I'll fall asleep immediately.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Well, but it does make a difference.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's really it's good. And uh, it's good.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Now, of course we're going to have Milania Trump's movie
- 4:05Speaker 3: opening pretty soon.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Hey, let me ask you something about that. It was
- 4:08Speaker 2: done by Brett Ratner, the big Hollywood producer. Wasn't he
- 4:12Speaker 2: kind of blacklisted? Wasn't he me tooed out of Hollywood?
- 4:15Speaker 2: How does he get back in action?
- 4:17Speaker 1: Uh?
- 4:18Speaker 3: Got he got back into action because nobody else want
- 4:21Speaker 3: me to direct this movie.
- 4:23Speaker 2: And still it's Amazon. Why would they get involved with
- 4:26Speaker 2: this guy?
- 4:27Speaker 1: No, I don't know.
- 4:28Speaker 3: I mean, I like Brett, I know him a long time,
- 4:31Speaker 3: We've been friends for years, but I do worry about
- 4:35Speaker 3: his association with this Also, as I as I've been reporting,
- 4:39Speaker 3: there's almost been no advanced sale for this movie.
- 4:42Speaker 1: No one is buying tickets. And it was very funny.
- 4:46Speaker 3: For some reason, on the website for the movie, it
- 4:50Speaker 3: came up that I could choose buying seats in Dixon City, Pennsylvania.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Did you ever hear Dixon City coming back.
- 4:55Speaker 2: I could see you there. I think it'd fit right in.
- 4:58Speaker 1: I've never heard of it before.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Let's be honest. Let's be honest. I would guess you
- 5:03Speaker 2: don't own a Maga hat.
- 5:07Speaker 3: I don't own a maga but red is not my color.
- 5:10Speaker 3: And also the hats never look good on me. Even
- 5:12Speaker 3: the Yankee hats still look good on me. Hey, just
- 5:15Speaker 3: I can't make it work.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Speaking of documentaries, tell us about because this is the
- 5:19Speaker 2: one I'm looking forward to. Tell us about the mel Brooks documentary.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Oh, it's so great.
- 5:24Speaker 3: It started last night and tonight is part two on HBO,
- 5:27Speaker 3: and then it's going to be running all weekend. And
- 5:29Speaker 3: in our snowstorm, we're going to have a lot of
- 5:31Speaker 3: fun watching the Melbrokes movie. He's ninety nine years old,
- 5:36Speaker 3: he's got every marvel and he looks great. And the movie,
- 5:41Speaker 3: the documentary in two parts, tells the whole story of
- 5:44Speaker 3: his career, you know, his even his life before in
- 5:48Speaker 3: Bancroft and his first marriage and it had three kids
- 5:53Speaker 3: from the first marriage, and he was working on your
- 5:56Speaker 3: show of shows, and he was trying to make a living,
- 6:01Speaker 3: and he was having a lot of trouble and then
- 6:03Speaker 3: you know, and then finally he wrote the producers, and
- 6:06Speaker 3: the producers in nineteen sixty eight got him an Oscar
- 6:09Speaker 3: for the screenplay and it sent his career soaring. And
- 6:13Speaker 3: then we have all those great movies from the seventies,
- 6:16Speaker 3: Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein.
- 6:20Speaker 1: And the movie.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Joan Apatow hosts the documentary and he does a great job,
- 6:26Speaker 3: and there's lots of interviews with various people who've known
- 6:30Speaker 3: Mel over the years, including Rob Reiner, who is, you know,
- 6:34Speaker 3: the son of his best friends. And Rob Reiner is
- 6:39Speaker 3: it's really tragic to watch him because he's so you
- 6:42Speaker 3: just love him when you see him and you think
- 6:44Speaker 3: about this terrible thing that's happened.
- 6:47Speaker 1: But Rob Reiner's in it.
- 6:49Speaker 3: And Ben Stiller and lots of cool people, but it's
- 6:52Speaker 3: mostly Mel talking, you know, at ninety nine about this
- 6:57Speaker 3: incredible career that he's had. And so it's well worth
- 7:01Speaker 3: watching both nights. Tonight is the second night.
- 7:05Speaker 2: And it's on HBO. HBO, so go watch. Hey, you
- 7:08Speaker 2: know what you should go watch. There's an incredible new
- 7:11Speaker 2: Sinatra documentary. Also two parts I saw that you did. Yeah,
- 7:17Speaker 2: it's on Fox Nation. That's their streaming service. You have
- 7:19Speaker 2: to go.
- 7:20Speaker 1: I know that's all right.
- 7:21Speaker 3: I love Sinatra. I'll see anything with Sinatra. I don't
- 7:24Speaker 3: care where it is.
- 7:24Speaker 2: But that documentary is pretty good, pretty well done.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Yeah, there was an HBO documentary several years ago, maybe
- 7:31Speaker 3: ten years ago. There was a great HBO documentary about Sinatra.
- 7:35Speaker 3: That's worth finding on their pay per view. But I'll
- 7:39Speaker 3: watch anything about you know that. We'll watch anything about
- 7:42Speaker 3: frand Sinatra.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Yeah, but go watch this one. It's on the Fox Nation.
- 7:45Speaker 2: It's called I don't like the title. It's called The
- 7:47Speaker 2: Echoes of an Icon. It's just a new Sinatra. It's great. Hey,
- 7:51Speaker 2: we only got like a forty seconds. How's Broadway doing?
- 7:56Speaker 3: Broadway's booming and Harry Potter of all things. Harry Potter
- 8:00Speaker 3: has been around for several years. It started out as
- 8:03Speaker 3: two plays with an intermission, then they combined it into
- 8:06Speaker 3: one play.
- 8:07Speaker 1: It's never really been a success.
- 8:10Speaker 3: But Tom Felton, who played a part in the Harry
- 8:14Speaker 3: Potter movies, is in the play now and the play
- 8:17Speaker 3: has taken off and gone up like a million dollars
- 8:20Speaker 3: a week in sales. It's huge, and it was number
- 8:23Speaker 3: one this past week. Two point six million dollars.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Wow, So.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Everyone is crazy now about Harry Potter and the Curse Child.
- 8:31Speaker 3: And it's definitely I remember it from the opening. The
- 8:35Speaker 3: magic in it and the special effects are fabulous, so
- 8:38Speaker 3: it's worth checking out. But when this guy came in,
- 8:40Speaker 3: if they just bring in one person every few months
- 8:43Speaker 3: from the movies, they'll stay on top forever.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Well, Roger, you've Friedman great stuff. If you want more,
