- 0:00Speaker 1: Opening day for college baseball across the country and your
- 0:04Speaker 1: Texas Longhorns in action tonight at the Shriners Children's College
- 0:09Speaker 1: showdown in Arlington, Texas at Globe Live Field, and you
- 0:13Speaker 1: can hear all Texas baseball right here on thirteen hundred
- 0:17Speaker 1: the Zone, six forty five pm airtime, seven o'clock first pitch.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Craig Way and Keith Morland will be on the call
- 0:25Speaker 1: this week in Texas opening their season against Louisville and
- 0:29Speaker 1: Craig getting set up right now at Globe Live Field
- 0:31Speaker 1: where he will join us and host the remainder of
- 0:34Speaker 1: today's show. But gon ahead and just get you guys started.
- 0:37Speaker 1: A fantastic weekend ahead on the forty acres and a
- 0:40Speaker 1: big win last night for Texas basketball. We will take
- 0:44Speaker 1: a look at the Longhornons victory over Kentucky last night,
- 0:49Speaker 1: a top ten showdown eighth R in Kentucky. On the
- 0:52Speaker 1: heels the Longhorns big upset victory over number two South Carolina.
- 0:56Speaker 1: A lot of potential for a trap game, you might say,
- 1:00Speaker 1: especially on the road in Lexington on a Thursday night,
- 1:04Speaker 1: and it was a neck and neck game at halftime,
- 1:06Speaker 1: and then Texas came firing out in the third quarter,
- 1:08Speaker 1: would go up by twenty points entering the fourth. Kentucky
- 1:12Speaker 1: would make a late run at the end of the
- 1:14Speaker 1: beginning of the fourth quarter. In fact, would score twelve
- 1:18Speaker 1: ten straight consecutive points to start that fourth quarter, fixed
- 1:20Speaker 1: sate for to call a time out, and Texas would
- 1:23Speaker 1: reclaim their twenty point advantage. Would end up winning that
- 1:26Speaker 1: game sixty seven to forty nine as the Longhorns improved.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Was it down ten and one?
- 1:32Speaker 1: I believe in in conference play, tied with South Carolina
- 1:36Speaker 1: at top the SEC standings for first place, and well,
- 1:41Speaker 1: now you get Kim Molke in the LSU Tigers on
- 1:44Speaker 1: Sunday eleven to one.
- 1:45Speaker 2: As a matter of fact, the LSU, who is number.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Five in the country ten and one, their only lost
- 1:50Speaker 1: came to South Carolina in Columbia, will be here Sunday,
- 1:54Speaker 1: and I don't know. I'm more interested obviously a fantastic game,
- 1:58Speaker 1: But what will Kim Molke wearing. I told Kathy Arson,
- 2:01Speaker 1: who of course is our analyst on Texas women's basketball
- 2:05Speaker 1: this season. I'm guessing leather. Kim Okie always has some
- 2:09Speaker 1: sort of theme for each game, whether it's the Sparkles
- 2:12Speaker 1: or the pink or the snake skin whatever, Texas Longhorn.
- 2:18Speaker 1: I think she's gonna go after Bevo. I think we're
- 2:20Speaker 1: gonna see some leather in, some outlandish leather on Sunday.
- 2:24Speaker 1: But again, that'll be a really fun game at Moody Center.
- 2:27Speaker 1: If you're looking for something to do on Sunday, come
- 2:30Speaker 1: out and support the women's basketball team. Another top five
- 2:34Speaker 1: showdown at Moody number three Texas, number five LSU in airtime.
- 2:40Speaker 2: For that leave tip off.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Just double check this tip off for Sunday's game against
- 2:45Speaker 1: fifth ranked LSU. That'll be at two o'clock, So one
- 2:47Speaker 1: forty five airtime on one O three one FM, two
- 2:51Speaker 1: o'clock tip off time at Moody Center. Just what three
- 2:56Speaker 1: home games left for women's basketball, three for men's basketball.
- 2:59Speaker 1: So get your fixed in now before the postseason starts.
- 3:03Speaker 1: As Texas women's basketball looks to make some damage. And
- 3:07Speaker 1: I went on Sunday and then they get their midweek break,
- 3:10Speaker 1: and I know this Texas team is really looking for
- 3:14Speaker 1: a break. They have had a very tough schedule, but
- 3:17Speaker 1: so far have been playing phenomenal basketball. Matty Booker was
- 3:20Speaker 1: sensational last night and again some great minutes from Kyle
- 3:24Speaker 1: o'dacres shield the team with points at halftime. She grew
- 3:26Speaker 1: up not too far away from Lexican Kentucky, of course,
- 3:28Speaker 1: from leave Mason, Ohio, and Texas now on a fantastic
- 3:33Speaker 1: win streak since they're loss to South Carolina. They've beaten
- 3:37Speaker 1: number eight Maryland, number seventeen, TENNESSEEE, number twenty four, Vanderbilt,
- 3:41Speaker 1: number two, South Carolina in number eight Kentucky face fifth
- 3:46Speaker 1: ranked LSU. Then they had that midweek by and then
- 3:48Speaker 1: able to take a breath last three games of the season,
- 3:52Speaker 1: two tough road games at Georgia, at Mississippi State, and
- 3:55Speaker 1: then they closed with Florida's Actually sorry, only two home
- 3:59Speaker 1: games left for women's basketball. Just two home games left
- 4:01Speaker 1: for women's basketball, but a little bit more of a
- 4:05Speaker 1: breather for the Texas women's basketball team, And the same
- 4:07Speaker 1: can be said for the men's side, who will face
- 4:10Speaker 1: Kentucky tomorrow in a game that I don't know if
- 4:13Speaker 1: you want to glabel it must win to make the
- 4:16Speaker 1: Inside Tournament. But looking at the last couple of games
- 4:19Speaker 1: and how Texas kind of limping into this game in
- 4:21Speaker 1: the mall with so many injuries on with the Von
- 4:24Speaker 1: Pryor and Kenda Weaver and Arthur Kaluma who got banged
- 4:27Speaker 1: up again in the loss earlier this week to Alabama.
- 4:31Speaker 1: This Texas team is looking for a huge win the
- 4:33Speaker 1: booster tournament chances, and tomorrow could be that game again.
- 4:37Speaker 1: It's a very good Mark Pope team. The Wildcats, who
- 4:41Speaker 1: have had some up and downs so far this season,
- 4:43Speaker 1: but lately coming in have been playing some fantastic basketball
- 4:47Speaker 1: in the Southeastern Conference.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Beat in Tennessee, I believe twice.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Now currently at six and five in conference play, fifteenth
- 4:54Speaker 1: ranked overall, back to back wins including win over South Carolina.
- 4:58Speaker 1: So hoping that Kentucky might come in tomorrow, you know,
- 5:03Speaker 1: maybe not completely locked into this game, especially with Texas
- 5:07Speaker 1: coming off a tough loss to Alabama. Would be huge
- 5:09Speaker 1: to Rodney Terry and the Longhorns. They'll pull out a
- 5:12Speaker 1: win to help improve their resume and their tournament chances
- 5:16Speaker 1: going forward. The end of the schedule kind of like
- 5:19Speaker 1: the women's team, a little bit easier on the men's
- 5:21Speaker 1: side of things, if you're is such a thing in
- 5:23Speaker 1: the SEC. They get the midweek buy after Saturday and
- 5:28Speaker 1: then travel to South Carolina. Arkansas Georgia, seb Be State, Oklahoma.
- 5:33Speaker 1: So just one top twenty five team remaining after their
- 5:36Speaker 1: game against Kentucky tomorrow. So overall six games left, two
- 5:41Speaker 1: against top twenty five teams. The Longhorns can find a way.
- 5:44Speaker 1: They go four and two, possibly you know, five and one,
- 5:49Speaker 1: they will find themselves playing in March. But not only that,
- 5:52Speaker 1: if you can go above five hundred and these last
- 5:54Speaker 1: six games, you know, build up the confidence with your
- 5:58Speaker 1: team going into the NCAA Tournament. Also in the SEC Tournament,
- 6:02Speaker 1: and the way this SEC Men's Tournament is scheduled sixteen teams,
- 6:08Speaker 1: there's what four games on the first day if you're
- 6:10Speaker 1: in the bottom eight of the league. So Longhorns likely
- 6:13Speaker 1: will be playing on that first day of the SEC
- 6:16Speaker 1: Tournament in not a bad thing. I mean, Mississippi State
- 6:19Speaker 1: right now would also be playing on the first day.
- 6:21Speaker 1: And they're a top twenty five team, they're ranked twenty
- 6:23Speaker 1: second in the country. It shows you how deep this
- 6:25Speaker 1: conference is. Vanderbilt also in the bottom made Arkansas, who's
- 6:30Speaker 1: good team.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Guys.
- 6:31Speaker 1: You know they started off slow, beat up on Texas,
- 6:34Speaker 1: but that's a team that's starting to play some really
- 6:36Speaker 1: good basketball. Obviously, we know a lot about coach cow
- 6:39Speaker 1: a team to watch out for. But if Texas can
- 6:41Speaker 1: find a way to close out the last bit of
- 6:44Speaker 1: February and early part of March on the right side
- 6:48Speaker 1: of some games, get a winn or two in Nashville,
- 6:51Speaker 1: you know they could do some damage in the UNCA Tournament.
- 6:54Speaker 1: But tomorrow will be a good indicator where this team
- 6:57Speaker 1: is at against a very good Kentucky team. All that also,
- 7:01Speaker 1: Texas Softball underway and they are making their home opener
- 7:06Speaker 1: today the Bevo Classic just down the road from us.
- 7:09Speaker 1: That begins, I believe three forty five today. You can
- 7:13Speaker 1: hear that on KHFIHT three. Just search Retro Austin on
- 7:17Speaker 1: your iHeart radio app. Andrew Haynes will have the call.
- 7:21Speaker 1: As Texas Softball, who begin the season perfect six to
- 7:25Speaker 1: zero with the Louisiana Classic, the UHLU Tournament, and then
- 7:29Speaker 1: the Bearcat Classic, open up against Maryland today four o'clock,
- 7:33Speaker 1: first pitch. That'll be a doubleheader, followed by their all
- 7:36Speaker 1: Big twelve rival, Texas Tech six p thirty scheduled first pitch.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Of course, with these softball tournaments, yeah, you're always going
- 7:45Speaker 1: to have a bit of a delay, so Maryland Texas
- 7:47Speaker 1: Tech Today, Tomorrow you Mass and Maryland a doubleheader that'll
- 7:52Speaker 1: be starting at four o'clock, and then Texas Tech on Sunday,
- 7:57Speaker 1: twelve thirty first pitch as a long core Horns will
- 8:00Speaker 1: face Texas Tech for the second time this weekend.
- 8:03Speaker 2: So again you're in.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Austin and all, it's a little bit chilly outside, but
- 8:07Speaker 1: go ahead taken some Texas softball at Red and Charlene
- 8:10Speaker 1: McCombs Field, and then of course Texas Baseball beginning this
- 8:13Speaker 1: weekend at the Shriners Children's College Showdown Louisville today, Ole
- 8:18Speaker 1: Miss tomorrow seven pm, and then Oklahoma State Sunday at
- 8:23Speaker 1: six point thirty. Can hear all three games in all
- 8:26Speaker 1: Texas baseball games this season on thirteen hundred the Zone. Craigway,
- 8:30Speaker 1: Keith Marlin, Roger Wallace up there in Arlington for the tournament.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Craigway and Keith will have the call today. Craig will
- 8:36Speaker 1: travel back to Austin tomorrow for Texas Men's and women's basketball,
- 8:41Speaker 1: so Keith Morland and Roger Wallace will be on the
- 8:43Speaker 1: call Saturday and Sunday as Longhorns begin their first season
- 8:47Speaker 1: with coach Jim Schlosnegel, and I believe coach Slosh has
- 8:51Speaker 1: his rotation set. Looks like Jared Spencer will start tonight
- 8:58Speaker 1: for long Corns. The left handed trans her from Indiana
- 9:01Speaker 1: State and Louisville will be starting Patrick Forbes for the
- 9:06Speaker 1: Cardinals at the Longhorns begin their baseball season. Craig Way
- 9:09Speaker 1: will join us a little bit later on in today's show.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Up.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Next, we are going to visit or rather hear from
- 9:15Speaker 1: Texas women's basketball coach Ficic Schaeffer as the Craigway Show
- 9:19Speaker 1: on this Friday afternoon is just getting underway. On thirteen
- 9:22Speaker 1: hundred the zone.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Texas trying to get the lead back. Here's Preston. Brie
- 9:27Speaker 3: floats it down to old egger running the floor and
- 9:29Speaker 3: she knocks it down. Texas with the one point lead
- 9:33Speaker 3: in the ball three minutes ago. Preston hesitation contact pull
- 9:37Speaker 3: up jumper is good.
- 9:38Speaker 4: Yeah, the hesitation got her free, just kind of froze
- 9:41Speaker 4: the defender.
- 9:42Speaker 3: First split second, Brie taking it to the bucket. Fade
- 9:47Speaker 3: away in and out and in.
- 9:49Speaker 5: Yeah, Brie is getting really deep into the paint off
- 9:52Speaker 5: of the.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Dribble Booker on the move down the paint lays it
- 9:56Speaker 3: up and in first points for Booker.
- 9:58Speaker 4: Yeah, that is where Booker is at her bess right
- 10:00Speaker 4: there in the open floor, grabs the rebound and takes
- 10:03Speaker 4: off with the basketball.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Five point lead again for Texas. One nine to go
- 10:07Speaker 3: here in the second quarter, ten seconds to go here,
- 10:10Speaker 3: Booker now makes her move, gets a screen, Booker crossover,
- 10:14Speaker 3: baseline jumper. Good. Three in a row. Four seconds to
- 10:17Speaker 3: go and Tyler gets it off and it's off the mark.
- 10:22Speaker 3: What a finish for Madison Booker and Texas goes to
- 10:26Speaker 3: the half with their biggest lead of the game, thirty
- 10:28Speaker 3: three to twenty five. Booker gets it down on the block,
- 10:32Speaker 3: goes up count the basket. She's vowed Madison Booker with
- 10:36Speaker 3: an end one opportunity, She's hit her last five shots
- 10:40Speaker 3: from the field, arm and wide open. Drops it down
- 10:42Speaker 3: to Taylor Jones who lays it in and gets Vould again.
- 10:44Speaker 3: What an unselfish play by Rory Harmon.
- 10:46Speaker 6: She had a wide.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Open fifteen footer, but instead an and one opportunity for
- 10:51Speaker 3: Jones and Texas is up by twenty. Rory driving on Amore,
- 10:56Speaker 3: backs it in, turns around twelve footer is good. Oh,
- 10:59Speaker 3: what a big time for her first basket.
- 11:01Speaker 5: Yeah, what a great answer by Roy Harmer. Little fade
- 11:03Speaker 5: away right here, Kipper dribble live enough to be able
- 11:05Speaker 5: to get the shots she wanted.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Now Jordan Lee does not take the three, She'll get
- 11:10Speaker 3: to the baseline Booker. That baseline jumper is good.
- 11:13Speaker 5: Yeah, great job by Booker.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Great patience by Shay Holly to get her the basketball
- 11:18Speaker 4: down on the baseline.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Now, Booker, baseline jumper, it's good. Back to back from
- 11:24Speaker 3: book She has fifteen and the lead is back to eighteen.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Sixty seven forty nine. Long Horns can just dribble this
- 11:30Speaker 3: thing out. What an impressive win on the road against
- 11:32Speaker 3: the eighth ranked team in the country to hold on
- 11:35Speaker 3: to their piece of first place and move to eleven
- 11:38Speaker 3: and one.
- 11:39Speaker 6: In sec play.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Impressive indeed, as a third rank long Horns held off
- 11:44Speaker 1: Kentucky and pulled away for a sixty seven to forty
- 11:47Speaker 1: nine victory at the Believe. It's called the historic Memorial
- 11:51Speaker 1: Call of sem in Leshton. In fact, Kentucky led at
- 11:55Speaker 1: one point in the second quarter, Texas led by two points.
- 11:58Speaker 2: After one frame.
- 12:00Speaker 1: UK led in the second quarter, Texas pulled away would
- 12:03Speaker 1: end up holding eight point lead at halftime and then
- 12:07Speaker 1: just came out firing the third quarter, stretched to lead
- 12:10Speaker 1: the twenty points going into the fourth quarter. Kentucky would
- 12:14Speaker 1: come out with a strong two minute burst to begin
- 12:17Speaker 1: the final frame, but the Longhorns after a timeout would
- 12:20Speaker 1: get back in front. Matty Booker with some clutch buckets,
- 12:23Speaker 1: Kyle Oldacre just unstoppable, and the Longhorns would win sixty
- 12:26Speaker 1: seven to forty nine. And I believe their first ever
- 12:29Speaker 1: game in Lexington, not just first ever game as SEC
- 12:33Speaker 1: Conference upunts, but first ever game in Lexington. So historic,
- 12:38Speaker 1: truly historic at the historic Memorial Coliseum. Nineteen points from
- 12:41Speaker 1: Madison Booker, nineteen points for Kylin Oldacre, fifteen points for
- 12:46Speaker 1: Taylor Jones, Lindsay Wisdom. Hilton, the Longhorns assistant coach, visited
- 12:51Speaker 1: postgame with Roger Wallace and Kathy Arston after the.
- 12:54Speaker 3: Win, where as you work with the Biggs and boy
- 12:56Speaker 3: did they show up tonight?
- 12:58Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 12:58Speaker 6: Can you hear me? All right? Yeah, I'm so out
- 13:00Speaker 6: of them.
- 13:00Speaker 8: Maybe it's just playing really really well together. It's kind
- 13:03Speaker 8: of like a one two punch. No matter who you
- 13:04Speaker 8: got in, they're just gonna battle down and just wear
- 13:06Speaker 8: the other team out and that's the goal, and you're
- 13:08Speaker 8: able to get their bigs in trouble. I worried about
- 13:10Speaker 8: the agility and the ability for their posts to shoot
- 13:13Speaker 8: and spread the floor out, but I think we did
- 13:14Speaker 8: a great job covering them, and then we dominated in
- 13:16Speaker 8: the paint.
- 13:17Speaker 3: And then the tag team effort with Taylor and Kyla.
- 13:20Speaker 3: I mean, Taylor does a lot of work early and
- 13:22Speaker 3: then Kyla just has a great finish to the first half.
- 13:25Speaker 8: Yeah, like you said, when one comes out, you got
- 13:27Speaker 8: another one coming in. So I feel sorry for a
- 13:30Speaker 8: lot of other teams post players because I gotta deal
- 13:31Speaker 8: with it. And so I'm just so blessed that we
- 13:34Speaker 8: have great post players to work with. And then we
- 13:36Speaker 8: obviously want to play through our posts inside out game
- 13:39Speaker 8: when they're problem to paint, our guards on the outside
- 13:41Speaker 8: being be able to knock down the shot, and they
- 13:42Speaker 8: can they make good reads. One of the best plays
- 13:44Speaker 8: for me today, I'm going off script, but when Rory
- 13:46Speaker 8: passed up an open shot to come in wonderable lob
- 13:49Speaker 8: it up to Taylor for an and one. I mean,
- 13:51Speaker 8: that's just great team basketball.
- 13:52Speaker 3: And then they scored ten points in under two minutes
- 13:55Speaker 3: and all of a sudden this place is into it,
- 13:57Speaker 3: and then you go on to ten, Oh run?
- 13:58Speaker 6: What does that say about your club?
- 14:00Speaker 8: Was always a game of runs, But I think we've
- 14:02Speaker 8: grown so much of this season. When other teams make
- 14:04Speaker 8: a run, we don't fold, and we don't you know,
- 14:06Speaker 8: get scared or nervous anything. We just turned the page
- 14:09Speaker 8: and then we make our own run. And that's definitely
- 14:10Speaker 8: what happened to night.
- 14:11Speaker 3: And then the gauntlet continues Sunday with that un here
- 14:14Speaker 3: we go stops Thanks.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Coach long Wards did a great job and stopping Georgia More,
- 14:18Speaker 1: the Kentucky standout guard who just had fourteen points on
- 14:21Speaker 1: five or sixteen shooting. We're seeing this Texas team defensively
- 14:25Speaker 1: really hone in the lock in on the opponent's best player.
- 14:28Speaker 1: We saw it with Say Green in Alabama. Even Mkilla
- 14:32Speaker 1: Blake at Vanderbilt did a fantastic job of really slowing
- 14:35Speaker 1: her down and Georgia Moore last night. So now we
- 14:38Speaker 1: see it against LSU. How can Texas slow down any somorrow?
- 14:43Speaker 1: In flage A Johnson, we heard from Wiz. Now let's
- 14:47Speaker 1: hear from Kyler Oldacre, who returning close to home, I
- 14:50Speaker 1: think grew up about thirty minutes away, maybe maybe a
- 14:53Speaker 1: little bit, maybe more like ninety minutes. Can't remember, but
- 14:56Speaker 1: Kylo fantastic game. Nineteen points off the bench, five and
- 15:00Speaker 1: nine shooting seven rebounds. She spoke with Roger Ross and
- 15:02Speaker 1: Kathy Arson post game as well.
- 15:04Speaker 3: She's playing about eighty five miles from her hometown of Cincinnati.
- 15:08Speaker 3: We're talking about Kyla Oldacre and Kyla in the ball
- 15:12Speaker 3: game tonight. With an effort of nineteen points, seven rebounds,
- 15:18Speaker 3: nine of ten from the free throw line. Kyla, you
- 15:21Speaker 3: just look like you're playing with a lot of confidence
- 15:23Speaker 3: on the offensive end.
- 15:24Speaker 6: Tell me how you're feeling about it.
- 15:26Speaker 7: I mean.
- 15:28Speaker 9: I show up every morning before my classes and get
- 15:31Speaker 9: work in, you know, tap on my craft in building
- 15:33Speaker 9: up conference every day in my craft, So why not
- 15:36Speaker 9: show it out in the game.
- 15:37Speaker 3: You and Taylor have turned into quite a one to
- 15:39Speaker 3: two punch. There's no drop off when you come.
- 15:41Speaker 2: In headed monster, no rest, nope.
- 15:44Speaker 3: And then the other little thing though free throws you
- 15:47Speaker 3: hit nine to ten. I mean, you go down there,
- 15:49Speaker 3: you get hacked a lot, but you gotta gotta finish it.
- 15:52Speaker 3: How much pride do you put into that? A lie?
- 15:54Speaker 9: These last few games before you know again another season.
- 15:58Speaker 9: It's been a rocky start with no free throws. Wasn't
- 16:01Speaker 9: as assistant, and I feel like.
- 16:03Speaker 6: You know, the beginning of the.
- 16:04Speaker 9: Season, I was shooting one I already shot one hundred
- 16:07Speaker 9: free throws, but all of a suddeny percent at that time,
- 16:09Speaker 9: and my concenta just went down. So play friends today,
- 16:12Speaker 9: I'm planning it back up where it needs to be.
- 16:14Speaker 3: I know your first goal is always to get the win.
- 16:16Speaker 3: But being as close to home as you are in Cincinnati,
- 16:19Speaker 3: I'm sure you've got a lot of family and friends here.
- 16:21Speaker 3: What's this effort like a win and obviously a monster
- 16:25Speaker 3: game from you.
- 16:26Speaker 9: I mean just showing up and wanting to be there
- 16:28Speaker 9: for my team and help my team win, honestly, And.
- 16:31Speaker 3: Now you get to come home and take on another
- 16:33Speaker 3: top ten team. Yeah all right, Kyla, thanks so much,
- 16:36Speaker 3: excellent game.
- 16:37Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Eighty five miles so not thirty minutes away. Eighty five
- 16:40Speaker 1: miles from where she grew up in Cincinnati. Ohhow so,
- 16:44Speaker 1: after the winds over South Carolina in Kentucky, how does
- 16:47Speaker 1: Texas stack up in the latest bracketology? Well, Charlie Cream
- 16:50Speaker 1: from ESPN still as Texas as a one seed, of course,
- 16:54Speaker 1: and I'll benchure the guests. The Longhorns defeat LSU on
- 16:59Speaker 1: Sunday and don't have a hiccup the rest of the way,
- 17:02Speaker 1: they will be a one seed in the NCAA tournament.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Truly historic for coach fix Schaefer squad this season, still
- 17:08Speaker 1: somewhart to do so a month ago, and of course
- 17:10Speaker 1: if you asked him about it, you know he's more
- 17:11Speaker 1: focused on Sunday than he is where the seeding is at.
- 17:14Speaker 1: But if Texas can beat LSU on Sunday and take
- 17:18Speaker 1: care of business before the SEC Women's College Basketball Tournament,
- 17:21Speaker 1: there'll be a top seed in this NCAA tournament. Charlie
- 17:24Speaker 1: Cream has Texas in the Spokane Regional. Of course, the
- 17:28Speaker 1: first two rounds are hosted by the top seed, so
- 17:31Speaker 1: Texas would play at Movie Center in Austin for the
- 17:34Speaker 1: first two rounds, and Charlie Cream has him up against
- 17:36Speaker 1: Tennessee Tech, Florida State, Iowa was a nine seed. Kentucky
- 17:40Speaker 1: also in in Raleigh for the regional against NC State,
- 17:44Speaker 1: but Sweet sixteen Elite eight will be played in Spokane
- 17:49Speaker 1: in Birmingham, so Texas looking to host the first two
- 17:53Speaker 1: rounds of the NCAA Tournament other one seeds UCLA, South
- 17:57Speaker 1: Carolina and Notre Dame, as well two seeds for the
- 18:01Speaker 1: nca Women's Tournament Yukon, Duke, USC and LSU. Currently, the
- 18:07Speaker 1: projection so far would still about a month left in
- 18:10Speaker 1: the season. Real Quick last night Top twenty five matchup
- 18:13Speaker 1: between USC and UCLA delivered a fantastic second half as
- 18:19Speaker 1: the Trojans upset the Bruins top rank Bruins seventy one
- 18:24Speaker 1: to sixty Juju Wakins thirty eight points up in light.
- 18:27Speaker 1: They did a great job holding Lauren Betts to just
- 18:31Speaker 1: eighteen points, a fantastic post player only eighteen points in
- 18:36Speaker 1: the game, thirteen rebounds, but USC shooting forty four percent
- 18:40Speaker 1: from beyond the arc to win this game. The Bruins
- 18:44Speaker 1: did not shoot the ball well two to thirteen from
- 18:46Speaker 1: beyond the arc, just thirty five percent from the floor,
- 18:49Speaker 1: even though they did out rebound USC by ten, Even
- 18:53Speaker 1: though they did move the ball round thirteen assists to twelve,
- 18:56Speaker 1: it was the Trojans who came out victorious. So Trolie
- 19:00Speaker 1: s Freame still has them at number one. But how does
- 19:03Speaker 1: this affect Texas well? USC will probably jump up quite
- 19:07Speaker 1: a few spots. But the Longhorns beat LSU on Sunday,
- 19:13Speaker 1: then you have three straight wins over three top ten teams,
- 19:16Speaker 1: including two against top five teams. Texas maybe the number
- 19:21Speaker 1: one ranked team come Monday. Now Notre Dame is still
- 19:24Speaker 1: number two. The Fighting Irish do have that head to
- 19:26Speaker 1: head win over Texas earlier this season, so maybe the
- 19:31Speaker 1: Fighting Irish will find themselves ranked number one. But of course,
- 19:34Speaker 1: if Texas does find a way to win on Sunday,
- 19:37Speaker 1: they may be the top ranked team in the country,
- 19:39Speaker 1: but still some work to do on that. More than
- 19:42Speaker 1: come here on this Friday show, Craigway up in Arlington, Texas.
- 19:45Speaker 1: He'll be joining us at the three o'clock hour as
- 19:47Speaker 1: Texas Baseball begins their season against Louisville six forty five
- 19:51Speaker 1: ERID time seven o'clock first pitch right here on thirteen
- 19:56Speaker 1: hundred this zone. But up next Texas Longhorns looking for
- 19:59Speaker 1: a new running back coach? Who is the name that
- 20:03Speaker 1: Texas might be circling up next on the Craig Way Show.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Glad to have you joining us here, whether you're listening
- 20:08Speaker 1: on the free iHeart radio app or in your car
- 20:12Speaker 1: on thirteen hundred to so glad to have you with us.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Of course, you can always join the show by texting
- 20:18Speaker 1: our text line texta word Texas the eight one to
- 20:20Speaker 1: five three zero followed by your message, or leave us
- 20:22Speaker 1: a message on the free iHeart radio app via the
- 20:26Speaker 1: talk back feature. We want to hear from you, and
- 20:31Speaker 1: I don't know if you guys can hear that in
- 20:33Speaker 1: the background, but it's the faint sound of pop music
- 20:37Speaker 1: being played, the crack of a bat, maybe some popcorn beat,
- 20:42Speaker 1: and that's the sound of baseball. It's also the sound
- 20:46Speaker 1: of Craig Way. Because Texas Baseball begins. They're twenty to
- 20:49Speaker 1: twenty five baseball season. The night at the Shriners Children's
- 20:53Speaker 1: College showdown against Louisville six forty five pm airtime, hopefully
- 20:57Speaker 1: seven o'clock first pitch against Louisville, and Craig Way will
- 21:01Speaker 1: have the call with Keith Morland and Craig joining us.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Now, good afternoon, Craig.
- 21:05Speaker 7: Yeah, let's see if we can give you a little
- 21:06Speaker 7: bit of There we go, popping the mitt on a
- 21:09Speaker 7: warm up pitch right here from Ole Miss, left handed starter.
- 21:13Speaker 7: There it is right there, Ole Miss in Arizona getting
- 21:16Speaker 7: ready to play the second game here. Hey, here's the
- 21:18Speaker 7: best news of the day so far, Cam, this tournament
- 21:22Speaker 7: is on time. Love that at least right now. First
- 21:25Speaker 7: game went about two hours and fifty six minutes something
- 21:30Speaker 7: like that. Oklahoma State, ranked nineteenth of the country in
- 21:35Speaker 7: the preseason favorite in the Big Twelve, held a four
- 21:38Speaker 7: to one lead going into the fifth inning, and then
- 21:42Speaker 7: Clemson scored two in the fifth, one in the sixth,
- 21:45Speaker 7: and two in the seventh. Oklahoma Stated had gotten one
- 21:47Speaker 7: more run in the sixth and there were I think
- 21:51Speaker 7: three runs scored on bases loaded walks over two innings,
- 21:56Speaker 7: and such as the case with early season baseball, that
- 21:58Speaker 7: happened sometimes. But Clemson came back to be the Arizona
- 22:02Speaker 7: State in the first game, or excuse me, to beat
- 22:03Speaker 7: Oklahoma State.
- 22:04Speaker 6: In the first game.
- 22:05Speaker 7: And right now Arizona and Ole Miss about to throw
- 22:08Speaker 7: the first pitch of game two, and there it is
- 22:11Speaker 7: a fastball for a strike. So anyway, the event is
- 22:15Speaker 7: on time. Here with the Shriner's Children's College showdown here
- 22:21Speaker 7: at Global Life Field in Arlington, And I understand can
- 22:27Speaker 7: why folks take their shots at domed stadiums. I get it,
- 22:33Speaker 7: especially with regard to baseball because they say it just
- 22:36Speaker 7: doesn't feel the same and it's just didn't have the authenticity.
- 22:40Speaker 7: And of course at Globe Life they have to use
- 22:42Speaker 7: field chirp because the way the field has constructed, the
- 22:45Speaker 7: sunlight never would have reached the parts of the field
- 22:48Speaker 7: that it needed to and the grass would have died.
- 22:50Speaker 7: That was the whole story behind why originally when they
- 22:54Speaker 7: were going to go grass and then needed to switch
- 22:57Speaker 7: to field trip. I get all that, but I will
- 22:59Speaker 7: tell you this, when you have a day like this
- 23:02Speaker 7: outside in Arlington, when you have that kind of day,
- 23:07Speaker 7: then you're happy to be indoors and it's fifty four
- 23:10Speaker 7: degrees with the wind blowing outside, so it's good to
- 23:13Speaker 7: be in.
- 23:14Speaker 6: It's good to be inside. Put it that way. For
- 23:17Speaker 6: this one.
- 23:17Speaker 7: It's got a cold, gray afternoon here in Arlington. But
- 23:21Speaker 7: of course, like I said, the events on time and
- 23:24Speaker 7: they're playing and there'll be a hot shot either on
- 23:28Speaker 7: error or a base hit for the leadoff man for
- 23:32Speaker 7: Ole Miss or rather for Arizona, so they're up in
- 23:35Speaker 7: the top half of the first inning. So anyway, yeah,
- 23:37Speaker 7: it's good and there's a lot of excitement obviously for
- 23:40Speaker 7: log worn Baseball and Jim Schlisnegel beginning his time as
- 23:44Speaker 7: head coach at the University of Texas. We'll see how
- 23:47Speaker 7: all that goes. It's a brand new look in a
- 23:50Speaker 7: lot of ways. It'll be a left handed junior transfer
- 23:54Speaker 7: and Jared Spencer, the transfer from Indiana State, who will
- 23:58Speaker 7: go to the mound for the log worn tonight. He
- 24:01Speaker 7: was the guy who earlier in the week of the
- 24:02Speaker 7: media availability, somebody might have been Kirk Bowles from the
- 24:07Speaker 7: Houston Chronicle asked him or somebody asked him if he
- 24:11Speaker 7: if he knew either of the two basketball players for Texas,
- 24:14Speaker 7: and he said, yeah, yeah, and he named him. He
- 24:16Speaker 7: knew obviously, Julian Larry, he knew him. He knew, uh,
- 24:22Speaker 7: you know, both of the long worn guys, and then
- 24:24Speaker 7: said that he talked to both of them before transferring
- 24:28Speaker 7: in because they, of course had transferred in Jason Kent
- 24:32Speaker 7: and Julian Larry both had transferred in together, and he
- 24:35Speaker 7: said that they told him, Yeah, Austin's a lot different
- 24:38Speaker 7: than uh than terorhod Indiana. So it'll be Jared Spencer
- 24:40Speaker 7: as the left hander. He's going to go to the
- 24:43Speaker 7: mound for Texas tonight. So yeah, there's a there's a
- 24:45Speaker 7: great deal of excitement. College baseball is underway. There are
- 24:49Speaker 7: games being played across the country today, and this whole
- 24:52Speaker 7: thing is underway now.
- 24:53Speaker 1: You know, Craig, I find it interesting you mentioned the
- 24:55Speaker 1: point about it being Jim Sloshneakles first game at Texas.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Texas base Ball has not had a lot of those.
- 25:02Speaker 1: I mean, obviously David Pierce the course moving over from Tulane.
- 25:04Speaker 1: But during your time as a playofy I played broadcast
- 25:08Speaker 1: for Texas Baseball. You've only covered David Pierce, right, because
- 25:11Speaker 1: Augi Torino.
- 25:13Speaker 6: Augie it was now. When Augie took over.
- 25:18Speaker 7: For Cliff Gustafson starting in nineteen ninety seven. When he started,
- 25:24Speaker 7: I was not yet on the broadcast. I had not
- 25:26Speaker 7: moved down to Austin. That was in the spring of
- 25:27Speaker 7: ninety seven, and I moved down in the in the
- 25:31Speaker 7: fall of ninety seven. So you're right, But I you know,
- 25:34Speaker 7: this will be the third Texas Baseball head coach I've
- 25:37Speaker 7: worked with, because when I first got down in ninety seven,
- 25:41Speaker 7: in my first baseball season working broadcast was with Keith
- 25:45Speaker 7: Morland and Bill Shooning. But I was I was the
- 25:50Speaker 7: third alternate or the second altar if you will, or
- 25:53Speaker 7: even I guess you'd say the first alternate because it
- 25:55Speaker 7: was it was Bill and Keith and then and then
- 25:58Speaker 7: if Keith had a a conflict with something, then I
- 26:02Speaker 7: would fill in.
- 26:02Speaker 6: And I think I did.
- 26:03Speaker 7: Somewhere around thirty games that first year working with but
- 26:07Speaker 7: that was you know, working with Aggie back then, but
- 26:10Speaker 7: he had already been in place as they head coach.
- 26:12Speaker 7: So you're right, this is only the second coach that
- 26:16Speaker 7: I will have worked with coming into the job, like
- 26:19Speaker 7: David Pierce in twenty seventeen and now Jim Schlasnegle here
- 26:24Speaker 7: in twenty twenty five. So yeah, it's you know, I
- 26:27Speaker 7: went through a long time CAM where there wasn't any
- 26:32Speaker 7: coaching change. I was when I was first, when I
- 26:35Speaker 7: was as the analyst, and then when it overlapped into
- 26:39Speaker 7: the time when I took over the play by playing
- 26:41Speaker 7: O two because you had Mac Brown and football, you
- 26:43Speaker 7: had Rick Barnes and men's basketball, you had Jody Conrad
- 26:45Speaker 7: and women's basketball, and he had Augie Garito in baseball.
- 26:48Speaker 7: And I did not even experience a coaching change for
- 26:54Speaker 7: the first five or six years on it. It was
- 26:57Speaker 7: when Jody decided to retire. You know, seven was the
- 27:01Speaker 7: first time that I had, you know, experienced a coaching
- 27:05Speaker 7: change as a broadcaster. Certainly is the play by play voice.
- 27:08Speaker 7: So so that was new. And obviously there have been
- 27:10Speaker 7: some changes since then. Uh there've been you know, uh
- 27:14Speaker 7: three more with basketball and uh and then of course
- 27:17Speaker 7: with women's basketball, there's been a couple more. Uh, but
- 27:20Speaker 7: it's been It's it's you know, it's the stability that
- 27:24Speaker 7: folks like to refer to. That's a big part of
- 27:27Speaker 7: why success happens with intercollegiate athletic programs if you have
- 27:32Speaker 7: that stability not only with the head coach, but with
- 27:34Speaker 7: the coaching staff. And by the way, Cam and I'm
- 27:37Speaker 7: sure you've probably touched on this, it brings to mind
- 27:42Speaker 7: what Sark is having to do in terms of, you know, uh,
- 27:47Speaker 7: replacing pieces of his coaching staff. We knew about Blake
- 27:50Speaker 7: Gideon leaving to be the defensive coordinator Georgia check and
- 27:53Speaker 7: now it's a shar choice leaving to be to join
- 27:56Speaker 7: the Detroit Lions coaching staff. It's it brings change, and
- 28:01Speaker 7: you know, Sark probably has had his short list of
- 28:05Speaker 7: guys that is that he has to go to if
- 28:08Speaker 7: he loses somebody, And we all, i think probably knew
- 28:11Speaker 7: that it was coming to a point where we were
- 28:13Speaker 7: going to see to Shard choice uh move on to
- 28:17Speaker 7: another position, perhaps in the NFL, because his star was
- 28:21Speaker 7: on the rise. I think we'd all seen it down here,
- 28:23Speaker 7: but it had been seen when he was at Georgia Tech.
- 28:26Speaker 7: It had been seen in his brief time, you know,
- 28:28Speaker 7: with the Cowboys. I think folks knew that that was
- 28:31Speaker 7: a guy whose career was definitely surging and trending upward,
- 28:36Speaker 7: and it was only a matter of time. I think
- 28:37Speaker 7: the same could be said for Blake Gideon, and it's
- 28:40Speaker 7: a great opportunity for Blake at Georgia Tech. Conversely, that
- 28:44Speaker 7: you know, Sark goes back to work and uh and
- 28:48Speaker 7: fills those spots. So that's you know, then then you see,
- 28:51Speaker 7: But one thing Sark has really done is he's done
- 28:53Speaker 7: an outstanding job of getting guys when he has had
- 28:57Speaker 7: to make some changes within the staff, hasn't had to
- 29:00Speaker 7: make a lot, But when he's done, when he has
- 29:02Speaker 7: done that, it's it seemingly has worked out really well
- 29:05Speaker 7: for him.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I think back to when Stan Drayton left to
- 29:08Speaker 1: take the Temple job in Texas fans like, man, we
- 29:11Speaker 1: just lost one of the best coach in the coaching staff.
- 29:13Speaker 1: Who are you gonna find? Oh the shard choice? What
- 29:15Speaker 1: has he done? And then here we are three four
- 29:18Speaker 1: years later with the same thing. So Sart does show
- 29:20Speaker 1: that he's I think he's has a stellar track record
- 29:23Speaker 1: of hiring assistant coaches.
- 29:24Speaker 6: Yep.
- 29:25Speaker 7: And and I think the latest example that was Kenny
- 29:28Speaker 7: Baker coming in on the defensive front with what he
- 29:30Speaker 7: what he's done. So you know there's that that is.
- 29:35Speaker 7: That's a good thing. Let me ask you, were you
- 29:38Speaker 7: able to get to some Vic Schafer sound.
- 29:41Speaker 6: In the first hour of the program?
- 29:42Speaker 2: I saved it all for you.
- 29:43Speaker 7: Oh okay, all right, well we're gonna do that now.
- 29:46Speaker 7: I'm gonna I'm gonna tell you what we're gonna do
- 29:48Speaker 7: when we're gonna come back from this break. See, I'm
- 29:52Speaker 7: gonna impede on Roger Wallace's chance for him to catch
- 29:57Speaker 7: his breath since he just came up there. But Roger
- 29:59Speaker 7: was in lexing, Kentucky last night to call that Texas
- 30:02Speaker 7: women's game. And of course I'll be back there and
- 30:04Speaker 7: Roger will be with Keith for tomorrow night's game against
- 30:08Speaker 7: ole Miss and Sunday evening's game against Oklahoma State. And
- 30:11Speaker 7: I'll be back in Austin for tomorrow nights men's basketball
- 30:14Speaker 7: game against Kentucky and Sunday's women's game against LSU. But
- 30:17Speaker 7: we'll get Roger to join us here for a couple
- 30:19Speaker 7: of minutes. We'll talk about the women, and we'll hear
- 30:22Speaker 7: from Vick Schaeffer as well. So we got all that
- 30:24Speaker 7: and more coming up. Where we are at Globe Life
- 30:26Speaker 7: Field in Arlington. Second game is underway Arizona and ole Miss,
- 30:30Speaker 7: and I knew I was gonna Jinson the minute I
- 30:33Speaker 7: said that things were on time. They're having to go
- 30:36Speaker 7: to a replay review to see if a pitch hit
- 30:39Speaker 7: Jason White, the batter at the plate for Arizona with
- 30:44Speaker 7: a three to two count with two down here in
- 30:48Speaker 7: the top half of the first inning. So we'll keep
- 30:50Speaker 7: everybody updated on that game for now. Texas and Louisville
- 30:56Speaker 7: are expected to begin on time at seven o'clock. Right here,
- 30:59Speaker 7: I'm thirteen under the Zone.
- 31:08Speaker 10: Welcome back to the Craig Way Show and the Voice
- 31:11Speaker 10: of the Longhorns.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Craig Way.
- 31:13Speaker 10: Follow Craig on social media at Horn Voice.
- 31:18Speaker 7: We're a globe white field here in Arlington. Cam Parker,
- 31:22Speaker 7: the producer, back in the studio. The replay review did
- 31:27Speaker 7: allow the Arizona runner to reach first base, but ole
- 31:30Speaker 7: Miss got out of the inning without further damage. So
- 31:32Speaker 7: it's in the bottom of the first ole Miss is
- 31:34Speaker 7: batting scoreless against Arizona. This is the second game here
- 31:39Speaker 7: in the Shriners Children's College showdown here on this Friday afternoon.
- 31:44Speaker 7: The first game started at eleven o'clock this morning, and
- 31:48Speaker 7: Clemson rally from a four to one depthsit to beat
- 31:50Speaker 7: Oklahoma State six to five in the first game. So
- 31:53Speaker 7: right now things are on time, and the Texas Louisville
- 31:56Speaker 7: game for tonight is still scheduled for seven o'clock first pitch. Obviously,
- 31:59Speaker 7: we'll keep you posted on that as well as this
- 32:02Speaker 7: game as well. All right, As I mentioned, of course,
- 32:06Speaker 7: this is what I like to refer to as the
- 32:08Speaker 7: overlap time of year. Actually, in truth, I like to
- 32:12Speaker 7: say overlap Roman numeral two because the first one happens
- 32:16Speaker 7: in November. In the December between football and then men's
- 32:18Speaker 7: and women's basketball. Overlap Roman numeral two always starts around
- 32:23Speaker 7: the third week in February second or third week, and
- 32:27Speaker 7: it's men's and women's basketball being overlapped by baseball and softball,
- 32:32Speaker 7: so it's an extremely busy time for all of us.
- 32:34Speaker 7: I'm real excited about all of that. Obviously, it stretches
- 32:37Speaker 7: us out a little bit, but we're primed for it,
- 32:40Speaker 7: and that's why Roger Wallace was last night in Lexickentucky
- 32:43Speaker 7: when I had long worn weekly with Rodney Terry. And
- 32:46Speaker 7: Roger will be here to call tomorrow night's game on
- 32:48Speaker 7: the Zone with Keith Morland. Keith will be with us
- 32:51Speaker 7: all three games here and throughout the vast majority of
- 32:53Speaker 7: the games this season, and Roger and Keith will call
- 32:57Speaker 7: the game against Old Miss here tomorrow night and then
- 33:00Speaker 7: Sunday evening against Oklahoma State while I head back for
- 33:02Speaker 7: men's basketball tomorrow night against Kentucky and women's basketball can
- 33:05Speaker 7: tell us you on Sunday.
- 33:07Speaker 6: So I think we got all that that part. Now.
- 33:08Speaker 6: We're kind of getting used to this overtime though, aren't we.
- 33:11Speaker 3: I'm surprised that with a two o'clock game Sunday, couldn't
- 33:14Speaker 3: you you could make it? About the second third end
- 33:17Speaker 3: crossed my mind, but.
- 33:19Speaker 6: I thought, yeah, it's probably better just like that.
- 33:23Speaker 3: Yeah, this should be fun and hopefully they can get
- 33:25Speaker 3: rid of some scar tissue in this building this time
- 33:28Speaker 3: of year.
- 33:28Speaker 6: I know everybody talks about this.
- 33:30Speaker 3: They have had some success in the Big twelve tournament here,
- 33:33Speaker 3: but this tournament obviously is has been rough on longhorns.
- 33:36Speaker 7: You know, I think it's really weird. What what stands
- 33:40Speaker 7: out of my mind?
- 33:40Speaker 6: Or two things?
- 33:41Speaker 7: One you mentioned the shortcomings in in tournament play here
- 33:46Speaker 7: in conference fermament Uh, But I also remember that remember
- 33:49Speaker 7: that wh when Oklahoma agreed to move that that conference
- 33:52Speaker 7: series here and Texas took two out of three in
- 33:56Speaker 7: that series, and and and the jenist of that was
- 34:01Speaker 7: Oklahoma had an early season home series against Northwestern State
- 34:06Speaker 7: and there was no way they were going to be
- 34:08Speaker 7: able to play it. They could see the bad weather
- 34:09Speaker 7: coming toward Norman. There's gonna be snow and ice and
- 34:11Speaker 7: all that stuff that happens there in February, and Skip
- 34:16Speaker 7: Johnson and the Oklahoma staff contacted the Globeli like people
- 34:19Speaker 7: and said, hey were the Rangers Entertainment Division, REV Sports,
- 34:23Speaker 7: I think it's called REV Entertainment, and said could you
- 34:26Speaker 7: open the doors and let us come in and play
- 34:27Speaker 7: that series, and the marketing people that they are, they said,
- 34:32Speaker 7: why sure, but you know, we probably wouldn't make enough
- 34:35Speaker 7: money just to pay the light bill. Would you be
- 34:38Speaker 7: willing to move one of your conference series here later
- 34:41Speaker 7: in the year, And they said, sure, which one?
- 34:43Speaker 6: And he went Texas.
- 34:45Speaker 7: So they agreed the move the series and the log
- 34:47Speaker 7: runs ended up taking two out of three, had a
- 34:50Speaker 7: shot to sweep it, but wound up taking two out
- 34:53Speaker 7: of three, including the Sunday And I always remember you
- 34:55Speaker 7: talking about there. There was a young reporter down on
- 34:58Speaker 7: the field who asked, David Pierce, would you be willing
- 35:00Speaker 7: to do this every year? And she meant it I
- 35:03Speaker 7: think like a Texas ou football thing, and so would
- 35:05Speaker 7: you be willing to do it?
- 35:06Speaker 6: And what was his response?
- 35:07Speaker 7: It was like, yeah, as long as it's their whole
- 35:10Speaker 7: Yeah exactly.
- 35:11Speaker 3: I mean they obviously that's that's huge for Texas to
- 35:14Speaker 3: being able to play here. And and if we if
- 35:15Speaker 3: we look back to that season, I think that was
- 35:17Speaker 3: kind of one of the launching points into a really
- 35:19Speaker 3: successful uh close pretty sure. They went to Omaha that
- 35:22Speaker 3: year yep as well, So yeah, it's not been all
- 35:25Speaker 3: all bad. Just in February. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 35:28Speaker 7: So, uh, well, we'll see how they do here Ole
- 35:31Speaker 7: miss with a runner at second and a runner at
- 35:34Speaker 7: first with two down here in.
- 35:35Speaker 6: The bottom half of the person thing.
- 35:36Speaker 7: Okay, let's let's discuss uh women's basketball. And we've watched
- 35:40Speaker 7: the evolution of this team throughout the course of the
- 35:43Speaker 7: season and as the days and weeks have gone by,
- 35:47Speaker 7: and and Cameron was just listening to the zoom conversation
- 35:53Speaker 7: with Vick Schaeffer and and we'll hear some of that
- 35:55Speaker 7: sound coming up a little later on. But uh, you know,
- 35:59Speaker 7: we're seeing this team become a much more complete, dangerous team,
- 36:04Speaker 7: if for no other reason than the emergence of Kyle
- 36:08Speaker 7: Oldacre here in the second half.
- 36:09Speaker 6: Of the season.
- 36:10Speaker 3: Yeah, she was outstanding and it was again, it was
- 36:12Speaker 3: very similar to Sunday kind of that one to two punch,
- 36:16Speaker 3: and it happened with Taylor Jones doing work early and
- 36:18Speaker 3: then Kyla came in in the second quarter and she
- 36:21Speaker 3: was outstanding. And boy, it helps when bigs can hit
- 36:24Speaker 3: their free throws because she was nine to ten from
- 36:26Speaker 3: the line, of course, playing close to home, about eighty
- 36:28Speaker 3: five miles from Cincinnati, so she was excited about that.
- 36:31Speaker 3: She didn't get too excited about anything. When I asked
- 36:33Speaker 3: her in the postgame about that, she just kind of
- 36:35Speaker 3: smiled and continued with the developmental aspect of her game
- 36:40Speaker 3: at Texas. But yeah, that's quite a combination, and they
- 36:44Speaker 3: keep finding ways to win in different ways. We thought
- 36:48Speaker 3: this might be kind of attract me. Kentucky's a high
- 36:51Speaker 3: scoring team. Texas is a high scoring team, but it
- 36:54Speaker 3: turned into a low scoring game. And Craig, I think,
- 36:56Speaker 3: you know the old shot chart with the pencils, the
- 36:58Speaker 3: shot I think in the first it was just like
- 37:01Speaker 3: a four year old got a hold of a big
- 37:03Speaker 3: black pencil and just scribbled right under the basket. I
- 37:06Speaker 3: don't think they hit a shot outside of four feet
- 37:10Speaker 3: until very late in the first half. I think Brown
- 37:12Speaker 3: and Preston had a little pull up from about eight feet,
- 37:15Speaker 3: but they couldn't buy a basket from the perimeter. But
- 37:18Speaker 3: they went in inside and just brutalized Kentucky inside either
- 37:22Speaker 3: getting points or getting to the line.
- 37:23Speaker 7: Yeah, and now you know, going into the game last
- 37:27Speaker 7: Sunday against South Carolina, the thing that kept going through
- 37:30Speaker 7: my mind is this is going to be a test
- 37:32Speaker 7: to see if they can find their own shots, create
- 37:36Speaker 7: their own shots and not get muscled off the line.
- 37:39Speaker 7: And they did all that, and they hit shots, and
- 37:42Speaker 7: they were physical enough and they rebounded well enough.
- 37:45Speaker 6: Because South Carolina doesn't have a lot of bigs inside.
- 37:47Speaker 7: This is a different deal with Sunday because LSU have
- 37:50Speaker 7: size inside. But I do think that Texas has at
- 37:55Speaker 7: the very least the equal, if not even beyond that
- 37:58Speaker 7: in terms of the back court and wing play.
- 38:00Speaker 3: Yeah, and you hope they can shoot the ball a
- 38:02Speaker 3: little bit better than they did another rough night shooting
- 38:04Speaker 3: for Rory Harmon. We know how she can affect the
- 38:07Speaker 3: game in so many ways, but it sure helps when
- 38:09Speaker 3: you get a six for eight performance like she had
- 38:12Speaker 3: a couple of games ago to go with everything else
- 38:14Speaker 3: she provides. But yeah, you love to think you can
- 38:17Speaker 3: just keep pounding it in and you're going to have success.
- 38:19Speaker 3: But you know, Kim Walk's too good at coach. I
- 38:21Speaker 3: think to let that happen over and over unless it's
- 38:24Speaker 3: just a mismatching. Kathy Harston with me last night said
- 38:27Speaker 3: she thought Kentucky's biggs, even though they're tall, but they're
- 38:31Speaker 3: very lean and they wouldn't be able to handle Texas
- 38:34Speaker 3: As bigs because they are tall, and you know they
- 38:37Speaker 3: are thick as well. And she was exactly right. Clara Strak,
- 38:41Speaker 3: who has big numbers, went scoreless and fouled out and
- 38:44Speaker 3: was not a factor. And that's one of those six
- 38:46Speaker 3: foot four but very wiry bigs in Texas just dominate
- 38:50Speaker 3: inside the paint. And it was a cool atmosphere, Craig,
- 38:52Speaker 3: it was, if not a sellout, within one hundred or
- 38:54Speaker 3: so of a sellout there Jim holds about sixty two hundred.
- 38:57Speaker 3: And it was a great atmosphere. Texas handled everything. And
- 39:01Speaker 3: then you know that second half. Texas dominates the third quarter,
- 39:05Speaker 3: they outscore twenty four to ten, take that big lead
- 39:07Speaker 3: in the fourth. What can happen? Well, Kentucky goes on
- 39:10Speaker 3: a ten oh run, and I think a minute forty one.
- 39:13Speaker 6: Seconds is real quick.
- 39:15Speaker 3: After a ten point second quarter or a third quarter
- 39:17Speaker 3: and a eleven point second quarter, Vick calls a timeout
- 39:20Speaker 3: and then Texas goes on a ten oh run and
- 39:22Speaker 3: they restore order.
- 39:23Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, and then so they finished on there. So
- 39:28Speaker 7: I would say this, and we'll hear what Vic has
- 39:33Speaker 7: to say about how the long word's going to have
- 39:35Speaker 7: to navigate three games and six days that sort of thing.
- 39:38Speaker 6: After they have eight days off, and.
- 39:40Speaker 7: I think it's important to point that out because it'll
- 39:42Speaker 7: be over eight days between games. After the game Sunday,
- 39:45Speaker 7: they don't play until a week from Monday. It happens
- 39:47Speaker 7: against Georgia, but that starts the final three games of
- 39:51Speaker 7: the regular season, and it's three games and six days.
- 39:54Speaker 7: They have a Monday game on the road, come back home,
- 39:56Speaker 7: they have a Thursday game in Startville and his return
- 39:59Speaker 7: to Mississippi State, and then the regular season finale on
- 40:03Speaker 7: Senior Day, Senior Night against Florida. So they're gonna they're
- 40:06Speaker 7: gonna have those games that they're gonna have to deal
- 40:09Speaker 7: with and or Senior Day on that Sunday afternoon. So
- 40:12Speaker 7: it's again, you know, a total I guess seven total
- 40:15Speaker 7: calendar days, but six days in between those three. But
- 40:19Speaker 7: I would submit to you this, if they find a
- 40:22Speaker 7: way to win this game this Saturday. VIC don't want
- 40:25Speaker 7: to hear this, but it's a downhill run to it
- 40:28Speaker 7: at the very least a share of the SEC title,
- 40:30Speaker 7: because those are three games where they're going to be
- 40:34Speaker 7: substantially favored to win all three of those. Gasissippi State's
- 40:38Speaker 7: not bad and it is a road game, but still
- 40:42Speaker 7: they're going to be substantially favored in all three of
- 40:44Speaker 7: those games to finish it out. And then you're talking
- 40:46Speaker 7: about finishing twenty nine and two and fifteen and one,
- 40:49Speaker 7: and I'm sure in solid possession of a number one
- 40:55Speaker 7: seed of the four in the NCAA Tournament and at
- 40:58Speaker 7: the very least sharing the SEC time, I'll probably with
- 41:00Speaker 7: South Carolina.
- 41:01Speaker 3: Yeah, because if they obviously they beat LSU, that's their
- 41:03Speaker 3: second loss, so they couldn't catch if Texas as long
- 41:06Speaker 3: as Texas wins out. But yeah, I don't think there's
- 41:08Speaker 3: any doubt you could go as far as seeing if
- 41:10Speaker 3: they beat LSU barring just a collapse in one of
- 41:13Speaker 3: those games. And yeah, they're probably a number one seed
- 41:16Speaker 3: as well regardless. But you know, with the NBA tournament
- 41:20Speaker 3: the way it is, one or two, you know, you know,
- 41:23Speaker 3: you get to play two at home and then you
- 41:25Speaker 3: go to that neutral site Birmingham or Spokane. Yeah, and
- 41:29Speaker 3: so kind of eliminates any kind of advantage unless you're
- 41:33Speaker 3: closer to home than they will be no matter what.
- 41:35Speaker 6: And I know Vic has a lot to say about it,
- 41:37Speaker 6: Yeah he does. He definitely does have to say.
- 41:40Speaker 7: And I will also tell you this because I know
- 41:42Speaker 7: some folks have asked me about it.
- 41:44Speaker 6: So this morning I did the research. I dug into it.
- 41:48Speaker 7: When I was asked what happens of Texas and South
- 41:50Speaker 7: Carolina tie for the SEC regular season title. Both only
- 41:54Speaker 7: have one loss in conference play was against one another,
- 41:57Speaker 7: what is the tie break?
- 41:59Speaker 6: Who is the number one seed? And you know what
- 42:01Speaker 6: the answer is, Well.
- 42:02Speaker 3: Logic would tell me how they did against the next
- 42:04Speaker 3: team in the standings.
- 42:05Speaker 6: But I'm gonna guess that's not it.
- 42:06Speaker 7: Well not because they wouldn't have lost against the next
- 42:08Speaker 7: team in the standings.
- 42:09Speaker 3: It's right, So okay, it's point differential. Call it in
- 42:13Speaker 3: the air coin flip.
- 42:14Speaker 7: If that was my next response, it's gonna be a
- 42:16Speaker 7: coin flip. And so so I can say, you can
- 42:19Speaker 7: take this to the bank. If the log Worns win
- 42:22Speaker 7: on Sunday against LSU and then run the table and
- 42:25Speaker 7: do that. And I'm expecting South Carolina to do the same.
- 42:27Speaker 7: They have a pretty favorable schedule. I know they start
- 42:29Speaker 7: to play Kentucky, but they got a pretty favorable schedule
- 42:32Speaker 7: to close it out. There's gonna be a coin flip
- 42:34Speaker 7: in the Commissioner's office to see who draws the number
- 42:37Speaker 7: one seed.
- 42:38Speaker 6: For the SEC tournament.
- 42:39Speaker 7: And for those who said, well, what's the big deal
- 42:40Speaker 7: about that, they're probably both as sure to being number
- 42:43Speaker 7: one seeds in the NCAA tournament, You're right about that.
- 42:46Speaker 7: For the SEC tournament, though, it's one less round that
- 42:50Speaker 7: you might have to deal with Maulkey again. Yep, you know,
- 42:52Speaker 7: because whoever is the two seed is probably gonna see
- 42:55Speaker 7: LSU would be the three and you're probably going to
- 42:57Speaker 7: see them in the semifinal rounds.
- 42:58Speaker 6: So that would be about the most end you know.
- 43:00Speaker 3: The flip side of this closing schedule for Texas, you
- 43:02Speaker 3: look at Kentucky, a team that you know, when they
- 43:05Speaker 3: went to that Old Miss game, they were tied in
- 43:06Speaker 3: the lost column with Texas, LSU and South Carolina. They
- 43:10Speaker 3: could struggle down the stretch. They're back into their Hutsburg
- 43:13Speaker 3: win SEC schedules really tough.
- 43:15Speaker 7: Yeah yeah, all right, coming up, we are going to
- 43:19Speaker 7: hear from Vick Schaeffer.
- 43:20Speaker 6: We'll do that.
- 43:21Speaker 7: This ball game's in the top of the second inning.
- 43:23Speaker 7: Arizona and Ole Miss are scoreless here and this is
- 43:27Speaker 7: in the second game here of the Shriners children's college Showdown.
- 43:32Speaker 7: The first game again saw Oklahoma State have a four
- 43:37Speaker 7: to one lead, only to see Clemson rally back to
- 43:39Speaker 7: win that one six to five.
- 43:41Speaker 6: And of course.
- 43:41Speaker 7: Texas and Louisville scheduled for tonight at seven o'clock. Right here,
- 43:45Speaker 7: Unningham thirteen under the zone.
- 43:51Speaker 2: We're back.
- 43:52Speaker 10: It's the Craig Way Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster
- 43:56Speaker 10: and boys of the Texas Longheards.
- 43:58Speaker 7: Craig Way here on a Friday afternoon on Valentine's Day.
- 44:08Speaker 6: I'm not going to be so.
- 44:11Speaker 7: Insensitive, Cameron is to ask you if you know, if
- 44:15Speaker 7: you're having the handle of Valentine's responsibility or anything like that.
- 44:19Speaker 6: I'm not.
- 44:19Speaker 7: That's That's not me. I'm not doing that. I just
- 44:22Speaker 7: just wanted to give you the heads up there. You
- 44:24Speaker 7: know you know me better than that, Craig.
- 44:25Speaker 1: Of course, now, I'm not gonna fuff that scam of
- 44:28Speaker 1: a holiday come.
- 44:29Speaker 7: That's right, That's right. You think it's all a big
- 44:31Speaker 7: marketing scam, don't you.
- 44:33Speaker 6: That's right?
- 44:34Speaker 7: And you know a lot of people I not think
- 44:35Speaker 7: that it's all about flowers and candy and cards and
- 44:42Speaker 7: all that kind of stuff and expensive dinners and things.
- 44:45Speaker 7: Of that nature, right of course. Yeah, okay, all right, and.
- 44:49Speaker 1: I'm guessing for the same way because you're spending your
- 44:51Speaker 1: Valentine's Day at Globe Life Field, right, Roger Wallace too.
- 44:55Speaker 7: Yeah, but I have my Valentine with me. Okay, she's here,
- 44:58Speaker 7: so so that's okay. So that that that works out,
- 45:02Speaker 7: That works out, okay. So, uh, let's let's hear a
- 45:06Speaker 7: little bit from Vick Schaeffer. Uh, Texas women's head coach
- 45:09Speaker 7: coming off the wind in Lexington.
- 45:12Speaker 6: Uh, what time did you guys get back last night? Roger?
- 45:14Speaker 6: Do you remember?
- 45:16Speaker 7: Twelve thirty, little after midnight last night is when they
- 45:18Speaker 7: got back. And uh and Vic back on the zoom today,
- 45:21Speaker 7: And so let's let's hear for some opening comments from
- 45:25Speaker 7: the long Warrens head coach.
- 45:26Speaker 11: Got in late last night. Obviously, kids played really hard. Yes,
- 45:31Speaker 11: last night, I'm really proud of them. Not our best
- 45:34Speaker 11: night offensively, but our two headed monster was outstanding, and
- 45:41Speaker 11: Booker was Booker.
- 45:42Speaker 6: And uh, you know, I.
- 45:45Speaker 11: Thought Rory Rory was really special defensively on a more
- 45:49Speaker 11: her and and Jordan Lee really did a good job
- 45:53Speaker 11: on her. And so I think she was three for
- 45:57Speaker 11: twelve at halftime ended up six for I don't know,
- 46:01Speaker 11: five for sixteen, yeah, five for sixteen, And you know,
- 46:05Speaker 11: we really think we held that team to thirty four
- 46:08Speaker 11: forty nine points. That team is so good offensively, and
- 46:13Speaker 11: they obviously have had a heck of a year, had
- 46:15Speaker 11: lost at home all year, and other than the two
- 46:18Speaker 11: minute stretch to start the fourth corner, our kids we
- 46:21Speaker 11: were pretty good.
- 46:22Speaker 2: We kind of started off a little.
- 46:23Speaker 11: Slow, but we ended the half on the right note
- 46:25Speaker 11: and then started the third quarter the way you want
- 46:28Speaker 11: them to do. So it's a great win, another another
- 46:33Speaker 11: top ten win for our kids. But we're, you know,
- 46:36Speaker 11: we're we got to get ready. Elish's been sitting at
- 46:39Speaker 11: home all week. They've had their by this week, you know,
- 46:43Speaker 11: and and so they've been sitting there all week getting ready.
- 46:46Speaker 11: And we're we're, you know, we're in the midst of
- 46:50Speaker 11: a four game gauntlet, you know, three top tens in
- 46:54Speaker 11: another top twenty, So nobody gonna feel sorry for you.
- 46:58Speaker 11: You got to get ready, and and uh, you know,
- 47:01Speaker 11: I know our kids will be excited to play on Sunday,
- 47:03Speaker 11: excited about you know, the opportunity, and uh so proud
- 47:08Speaker 11: of them for the win last night. We got in
- 47:09Speaker 11: about one, which is not as late as some of
- 47:12Speaker 11: our other trusts.
- 47:13Speaker 2: Was that's still pretty late. And I know Booker at
- 47:16Speaker 2: A and a M class this.
- 47:17Speaker 11: Morning and as well as some of our others, so
- 47:21Speaker 11: I'll be anxious see them and waits and uh, we'll
- 47:24Speaker 11: have a good film session today and and.
- 47:26Speaker 2: Get ready to play. Obviously a really good L s
- 47:29Speaker 2: U team.
- 47:31Speaker 11: Really got great guard play, got got a monster monster
- 47:35Speaker 11: for player and andmorrow, and uh, you know, we're we're
- 47:38Speaker 11: gonna have to really really really play our best. They're
- 47:42Speaker 11: they're really physical, really tough, and so if you don't
- 47:48Speaker 11: bring those two things to the game, you know, the
- 47:50Speaker 11: rest of it really doesn't matter.
- 47:52Speaker 2: So we're gonna have to really bring that.
- 47:54Speaker 11: Toughness and uh that that we got to bring, you know,
- 47:59Speaker 11: night and night out really in this league, but especially
- 48:01Speaker 11: when you play people like South Carolina and LSU, because
- 48:05Speaker 11: that's who they are.
- 48:07Speaker 7: You know. There were a lot of things that I
- 48:10Speaker 7: just gleaned from those words from Vick Schaeffer, but I
- 48:15Speaker 7: gotta tell you, cam one of the things that stood
- 48:19Speaker 7: out to me was the fact that he said that
- 48:22Speaker 7: Madison Booker had an eight o'clock class this morning. Now,
- 48:26Speaker 7: did you ever have an eight o'clock class on a
- 48:28Speaker 7: Friday morning?
- 48:28Speaker 1: I did, and it was the the In that class,
- 48:31Speaker 1: I got my worst college grade letter grade.
- 48:33Speaker 2: It was eight am. That's tough.
- 48:35Speaker 7: Yeah, I've had a day I had eight am classics,
- 48:38Speaker 7: never on a Friday. I didn't want to have it
- 48:40Speaker 7: on a fee. Uh So, I don't know. I guess
- 48:43Speaker 7: that has to do with you know.
- 48:45Speaker 1: It's it's usually ut classes either it's Tuesday Thursday, or
- 48:49Speaker 1: it's Monday, Wednesday, Friday. So if she got stuck with Wednesday, Monday,
- 48:52Speaker 1: Wednesday Friday. Hopefully though, it's something something chill like college
- 48:56Speaker 1: sports media and not like chemistry or biology.
- 49:00Speaker 6: Really yeah, yeah, there you go.
- 49:03Speaker 7: Here's another comment from Vic Shaeffer asked about Rory Harmon. Now,
- 49:09Speaker 7: you know, Rory hasn't had her best offensive games of
- 49:14Speaker 7: latent terms of point production. She still distributes the basketball well,
- 49:17Speaker 7: but she has been a monster on defense. And so
- 49:21Speaker 7: the question was, is she back to her defensive Player
- 49:23Speaker 7: of the year level of defense that she had prior
- 49:26Speaker 7: to the knee injury.
- 49:27Speaker 2: Yeah, defendsively. She looks really good to me. I mean,
- 49:30Speaker 2: she was stepped for step last night with a more.
- 49:33Speaker 11: And that kid's been player of the Week in our
- 49:35Speaker 11: league several times.
- 49:37Speaker 2: She's a fifth year senior. She's got all.
- 49:40Speaker 11: The moves and Rory's Rory's quickness and just her ability
- 49:47Speaker 11: to shadow people. You know, she just she can really
- 49:51Speaker 11: stay toe to toe, hip to hip with.
- 49:54Speaker 2: People, hard to shake Rory Harmon.
- 49:57Speaker 12: And it just it's amazing to me when I watch her, knowing,
- 50:03Speaker 12: you know, where she what happened, where she was, and
- 50:06Speaker 12: now where she is.
- 50:08Speaker 2: She's just she's really amazing.
- 50:11Speaker 11: But she's impacting the game so much on that end,
- 50:14Speaker 11: and then running our team and having a presence, and.
- 50:18Speaker 2: So, you know, I think she's defensively, she looks really
- 50:23Speaker 2: good to me.
- 50:25Speaker 6: All right.
- 50:26Speaker 7: So there's a couple of comments there from Vic Shaffer.
- 50:29Speaker 7: We'll hear some more from him before the program's done.
- 50:33Speaker 7: This afternoon, this baseball game between Arizona and Old Miss
- 50:38Speaker 7: has moved to the top of a third inning. It
- 50:41Speaker 7: is still scoreless between the Wildcats and the Rebels. And incidentally,
- 50:46Speaker 7: I know some other folks have asked the question. Schla's
- 50:48Speaker 7: talked about it the other day. You know, why is
- 50:51Speaker 7: Texas playing Old Miss a team out of their own conference?
- 50:54Speaker 7: In this event. There's a couple of things at work
- 50:58Speaker 7: here on that. First of all, they don't face each
- 51:00Speaker 7: other in the regular season this year, because in the SEC,
- 51:04Speaker 7: you don't play every school in the conference on your schedule,
- 51:08Speaker 7: on your league schedule. In Texas and ole Miss are
- 51:10Speaker 7: not scheduled to meet this year, So that's why this
- 51:13Speaker 7: is easily able to be counted as a non conference game.
- 51:16Speaker 7: The other thing to keep in mind, and Schloss pointed
- 51:18Speaker 7: this out, and I know him to be correct on this.
- 51:21Speaker 7: When David Pierce was the coach, he agreed to this
- 51:24Speaker 7: rotation having already seen the SEC schedule for twenty twenty five.
- 51:31Speaker 7: When this was set up last year, he already had
- 51:33Speaker 7: the SEC schedule for twenty twenty five, so he knew
- 51:36Speaker 7: that Texas and ole Miss would not be playing a
- 51:40Speaker 7: conference play and that's why he was able to agree
- 51:43Speaker 7: to that matchup.
- 51:45Speaker 6: Even though you know there's another team. You know, there's two.
- 51:48Speaker 7: Other teams here that they could have played, and they're
- 51:52Speaker 7: playing right well. One of them is playing right now, Arizona,
- 51:54Speaker 7: and then the other one would be Clemson. They could
- 51:56Speaker 7: have played either of those other two. But the way
- 51:58Speaker 7: it worked out, it'll work out where they get a
- 52:00Speaker 7: really good non conference test from ole Miss, a game
- 52:04Speaker 7: that won't count in the conference standings. Arizona batting in
- 52:06Speaker 7: the top of the third with the leadoff man a
- 52:09Speaker 7: board hit by a pitch, so scoreless. Top of the
- 52:12Speaker 7: third Arizona and ole Miss. Texas and Louisville scheduled for
- 52:16Speaker 7: seven o'clock tonight. We'll talk some men's basketball up next
- 52:19Speaker 7: when we continue on AM thirteen under the Zone, third
- 52:21Speaker 7: and final hour of the program from Globe Life Field
- 52:25Speaker 7: in Arlington and Arlington on a dank, gray, overcast, cold,
- 52:31Speaker 7: windy kind of day. It's in the mid fifties, but
- 52:34Speaker 7: it feels a lot chillier outside. Fortunately we're indoors, of course,
- 52:39Speaker 7: the roof covering the playing surface here at Global Life Field,
- 52:42Speaker 7: home of the Texas Rangers and home of the Shriners
- 52:45Speaker 7: Children's College Showdown three games per day today, Tomorrow and Sunday,
- 52:52Speaker 7: and the Texas log Worn baseball team opens its season
- 52:55Speaker 7: here this weekend with three night games. They'll play tonight
- 53:00Speaker 7: scheduled seven o'clock first pitch against Louisville. We always see
- 53:03Speaker 7: scheduled because of the link of the other two games,
- 53:06Speaker 7: and you have to have a minimum time of forty
- 53:08Speaker 7: five minutes on the field with the teams to warm up.
- 53:10Speaker 7: But so far, we'll knock on wood. Things have moved
- 53:14Speaker 7: pretty much on time. The first game was on time,
- 53:17Speaker 7: Clemson rallying back from a four to one deficit in
- 53:20Speaker 7: the fifth inning. They got two in the fifth, one
- 53:22Speaker 7: in the sixth, two, and the seventh gave up one
- 53:24Speaker 7: run but held on and beat Oklahoma State six.
- 53:26Speaker 6: To five to come back and win that game.
- 53:28Speaker 7: This second game right now is in the top of
- 53:30Speaker 7: the fourth inning, so they moved just past the one
- 53:32Speaker 7: hour mark and it's scoreless between Arizona and Old Miss.
- 53:36Speaker 7: Of course, the long Horns play Old Miss tomorrow night.
- 53:39Speaker 7: It's a non conference game tomorrow night between those two
- 53:44Speaker 7: as Ole Miss and Texas are not on the same schedule,
- 53:48Speaker 7: so they'll they don't play each other in conference play,
- 53:52Speaker 7: so they will play tomorrow night and then Texas will
- 53:55Speaker 7: play Oklahoma State.
- 53:56Speaker 6: They're all Big Twelve four on Sunday evening.
- 53:59Speaker 7: Oklahoma State came in and as the favorite preseason favorite
- 54:02Speaker 7: to win the Big Twelve this year.
- 54:04Speaker 6: And they're gonna be tough. They can really swing the bat.
- 54:07Speaker 7: They still have guys like Colin Brigaman and ar Hart
- 54:12Speaker 7: and all those other guys who can really swing the bat,
- 54:14Speaker 7: but they're pitching. Let him down today the bullpen that
- 54:17Speaker 7: there were three of Clemson's five un answered runs were
- 54:20Speaker 7: scored via bases loaded walks, and so that was a
- 54:24Speaker 7: big part of it as well. But the Longhorns will
- 54:27Speaker 7: play them on Sunday evening. It's a busy weekend, as
- 54:31Speaker 7: we've pointed out with Long Worn Basketball. We're gonna hear
- 54:35Speaker 7: from Rodney Terry a next segment coming up talking about
- 54:38Speaker 7: this matchup with the Kentucky Wildcats tomorrow night, seven o'clock
- 54:41Speaker 7: tip off at Moody and you can hear that game
- 54:45Speaker 7: on ninety eight point one FMKVET. Of course, all three
- 54:47Speaker 7: baseball games from here in Arlington will be here on
- 54:51Speaker 7: thirteen under the Zone tonight.
- 54:53Speaker 6: Keith Morlan will join me for the call of tonight's game.
- 54:56Speaker 7: I'll head back to call the Long Worn men's basketball
- 54:59Speaker 7: game it's Kentucky tomorrow evening with Eddie Orrin, and then
- 55:03Speaker 7: Sunday the Texas women's game. On Sunday as the log
- 55:07Speaker 7: Orange will play LSU. Huge match up there for Texas
- 55:11Speaker 7: women's basketball and Roger Wallace will step in for me
- 55:13Speaker 7: up here on the Saturday and Sunday games, as Texas
- 55:16Speaker 7: will be in action on Tomorrow night, as I mentioned
- 55:19Speaker 7: against Hole, missing on Sunday against Oklahoma State. And then
- 55:23Speaker 7: on top of all of that, Cameron Parker, you have
- 55:26Speaker 7: NBA All Star Weekend and you're really really fired up
- 55:29Speaker 7: about all that, aren't you.
- 55:31Speaker 2: I'm sorry, do you say all Star weekend?
- 55:35Speaker 7: But see you're an NBA guy though, see, so I
- 55:38Speaker 7: mean you should be fired up for this showcase weekend.
- 55:41Speaker 1: Right if it was like twenty years ago and you know,
- 55:43Speaker 1: Kobe Bryant was still playing it one the cross dudes
- 55:46Speaker 1: up and cuss him out afterwards, then yeah. But there's
- 55:49Speaker 1: no there's no intensity to these games. I mean, what
- 55:52Speaker 1: we got like four different teams. Nobody knows who's on
- 55:55Speaker 1: each team or even what the format is or what's
- 55:59Speaker 1: going on. It's it's it's become like the Probo Pro
- 56:03Speaker 1: Bowl in the NFL, where it's just oh it is
- 56:06Speaker 1: that on today, Okay, whatever, move on with your day.
- 56:10Speaker 7: I think I think it's because they've changed the format
- 56:15Speaker 7: with these All Star games so often with basketball, with
- 56:19Speaker 7: the NHL, uh the only one that doesn't really get changed,
- 56:23Speaker 7: is baseball. They have a couple of wrinkles with it,
- 56:25Speaker 7: but by and large, the game has played as it was.
- 56:27Speaker 7: And we were in this facility back in July and
- 56:29Speaker 7: we were up here to see the Baseball All Star Game.
- 56:32Speaker 7: And even though there weren't a lot of runs scoring,
- 56:33Speaker 7: the game it was it was. It was a good night. Right,
- 56:36Speaker 7: We've got to got a chance to see shoey Otani
- 56:40Speaker 7: with a home run. We got a chance to see
- 56:42Speaker 7: the American League get the win in that one, and
- 56:43Speaker 7: it and uh, it was. It was a lot of fun.
- 56:46Speaker 7: But you know, it's the closest thing to a real game.
- 56:50Speaker 7: And even then, you know they're they're using one pitcher
- 56:53Speaker 7: an inning. So it's it's a little bit different, but
- 56:55Speaker 7: it is it more closely resembles, say, what we watch
- 57:00Speaker 7: during the course of the regular season, as opposed to
- 57:05Speaker 7: you know, what we're seeing, you know, in these other
- 57:08Speaker 7: All Star games in the NBA.
- 57:09Speaker 6: And then now this business of three.
- 57:11Speaker 7: Teams, one for Charles Barkley, one for Kenny Smith, and
- 57:15Speaker 7: one for Shack and then.
- 57:16Speaker 6: The Rising Stars.
- 57:18Speaker 7: Does anybody really think the Rising Stars have any shot
- 57:20Speaker 7: against those.
- 57:21Speaker 6: Other three teams?
- 57:22Speaker 2: I don't think so. I don't think so.
- 57:24Speaker 7: I mean, they're good young players, but you're going up
- 57:27Speaker 7: against teams with.
- 57:29Speaker 1: But hey, maybe maybe they'll actually care, maybe they'll care
- 57:32Speaker 1: about it versus you know, the other teams are just
- 57:35Speaker 1: kind of like, yeah, we're just here for the weekend
- 57:38Speaker 1: and the extra money and whatnot. So I don't know,
- 57:41Speaker 1: you know, I would not bet on this. I would
- 57:43Speaker 1: stay away from from betting on this type of formatt
- 57:46Speaker 1: but you know, let's.
- 57:47Speaker 7: See, yeah, and yet there are people who will bet
- 57:49Speaker 7: on it, right, sure, they'll still be the money going on.
- 57:53Speaker 7: And then, of course the biggest joke of all of
- 57:57Speaker 7: these is what has become of the Pro Bowl, you know,
- 58:02Speaker 7: the football one for the NFL, because you know, I
- 58:08Speaker 7: understand where tackling was going to be at a premium
- 58:12Speaker 7: in the past when they played this, but you could
- 58:15Speaker 7: kind of get passed a little bit of that, just
- 58:16Speaker 7: like NHL All Star Games. You're you know, you could
- 58:19Speaker 7: you could deal with eleven to nine or nine to
- 58:22Speaker 7: seven of the final score. What you're still seeing the
- 58:23Speaker 7: skill on display, But don't come at me with flag
- 58:27Speaker 7: football and expect me to be entertained by it.
- 58:30Speaker 1: And it's so hard Craig to in like, all take
- 58:33Speaker 1: the defense the players here, like, you know, an NBA
- 58:36Speaker 1: All Star break or NHL All Star break when it's
- 58:39Speaker 1: during the regular season, What's what is the incentive for
- 58:42Speaker 1: wanting to play hard? Because what do you get hurt?
- 58:46Speaker 1: You know what, what if SGA goes out for the
- 58:48Speaker 1: thunder and gets hurt on Sunday and then he's out
- 58:51Speaker 1: for the second half. So your coach, your front office,
- 58:54Speaker 1: your GM, everybody is like, yeah, you know what, why
- 58:57Speaker 1: don't you take it easy? You know, why don't you
- 58:58Speaker 1: just put some threes up? The same thing for NHL
- 59:01Speaker 1: for the Pro Bowl. These guys just had a long season, right.
- 59:05Speaker 1: The NFL is even longer now, it's probably going to
- 59:07Speaker 1: expand next season. Some of these guys had a growing playoffs.
- 59:10Speaker 1: They probably have come to Hawaii or wherever the Pro
- 59:13Speaker 1: Bowl's at now already injured, maybe, you know, trying to
- 59:15Speaker 1: heal it from an injury. Why do they want to
- 59:18Speaker 1: go out and play sixty minutes of football when the
- 59:22Speaker 1: season's over with?
- 59:23Speaker 2: Right, So what is the incentive for these guys?
- 59:25Speaker 7: Now?
- 59:25Speaker 1: You know MLB All Star used to be the winner,
- 59:28Speaker 1: the winner of the American League National leagu would host
- 59:30Speaker 1: the World Series, right, they've gone away from that. The NBA,
- 59:34Speaker 1: you know, they've completely gone away from the Eastern Conference,
- 59:36Speaker 1: Western Conference. I don't even know what the NHL does, Craig,
- 59:39Speaker 1: is it was it three on three?
- 59:42Speaker 6: Yeah? They have various incenters.
- 59:44Speaker 1: Yeah, and in the Pro Bowl, doesn't you know there's
- 59:46Speaker 1: Team ELI, Team Payton whatever, like you know, it's these
- 59:49Speaker 1: guys are just getting paid to show up and kind
- 59:51Speaker 1: of just do some light cardio. So for on their defense,
- 59:54Speaker 1: I do not know what the incentive is, and I
- 59:56Speaker 1: do not know how to fix it.
- 1:00:00Speaker 7: There's only one way to fix it. Really, there's really
- 1:00:03Speaker 7: only one way. If you are serious about making your
- 1:00:07Speaker 7: All Star Games, be it the NBA. And like I said,
- 1:00:11Speaker 7: Major League Baseball is the closest thing to replicating a
- 1:00:16Speaker 7: regular season game that we would attend of the All
- 1:00:19Speaker 7: Star Games. None of the other ones even come remotely
- 1:00:22Speaker 7: close to what we see. So how do you remedy that?
- 1:00:25Speaker 7: There's one way? One way only? You got to make
- 1:00:28Speaker 7: it so incredibly financially lucrative.
- 1:00:30Speaker 6: To them that they would do it.
- 1:00:32Speaker 7: You know, if they're agents, and you know their representatives
- 1:00:39Speaker 7: and their general managers are telling you well, hey, we
- 1:00:42Speaker 7: don't want you to get hurt or whatever. But you
- 1:00:44Speaker 7: go out there and if you're on a winning team
- 1:00:46Speaker 7: you get ten million dollars a man. Then they're probably
- 1:00:51Speaker 7: going to say, let's suit it up and let's play.
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: And then if the losers you get nothing.
- 1:00:57Speaker 7: I don't know that i'd go that route. I think
- 1:01:01Speaker 7: there would still be maybe ten and five. You know,
- 1:01:04Speaker 7: just for playing in it, you get five million, you know,
- 1:01:07Speaker 7: and then if you and then if you're on the
- 1:01:09Speaker 7: winning side, you get ten million per man, you know.
- 1:01:12Speaker 7: And don't tell me the NFL doesn't have the money,
- 1:01:14Speaker 7: because they do have the money. We know they have
- 1:01:15Speaker 7: the money. So you know, it would if I'm not
- 1:01:19Speaker 7: saying that's the solution, I'm saying it would have to
- 1:01:21Speaker 7: be something like that. It has to be so attractive
- 1:01:28Speaker 7: to the players that that that they can't say no,
- 1:01:34Speaker 7: that there's just it's just too good that the Players
- 1:01:36Speaker 7: Association won't balk at it. Like the Players Association these
- 1:01:40Speaker 7: days is making noises that they are adamantly opposed to
- 1:01:47Speaker 7: adding an eighteenth game. Here the the executive director of
- 1:01:51Speaker 7: the Player Association said, nobody's in favor of that. Yeah, well,
- 1:01:55Speaker 7: the owners are obviously they want the money there, and
- 1:01:58Speaker 7: the way you make it worth one is to make
- 1:02:00Speaker 7: it worthwhile for the players. It's just they got to
- 1:02:03Speaker 7: come in for their cut of it if it's.
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: Going to be worthwhile with a text coming on the
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: text lines and the Pro Bowl was always pretty antiseptic.
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: But the old school NBA All Star Game and especially
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: Major League All Star Game really captured the imagination the
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: good old days.
- 1:02:17Speaker 6: I agree.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: I think right now the best All Star game is
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: the one you mentioned MLB right now, and I think
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: growing up, the NBA All Star Game used to kind
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: of capture that. I never really thought the NFL Pro
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: Bowl really produced a good game, especially because it was
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: the end of the year and there's so many guys
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: who withdraw from it in the Super Bowl and stuff.
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: But I felt like the old school NBA All Star Game,
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: especially during the nineties early two thousands, kind of had
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: something to it.
- 1:02:44Speaker 7: Yeah, I agree, And the Baseball All Star Game has
- 1:02:49Speaker 7: been the best of years now. I will tell you
- 1:02:51Speaker 7: one thing that I'm not in favor of those goofy
- 1:02:53Speaker 7: for Cocta uniforms.
- 1:02:54Speaker 6: We saw them where yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:57Speaker 7: One of the great things about the Baseball All Star
- 1:02:58Speaker 7: Game is seeing those guys lined up in their uniform
- 1:03:02Speaker 7: if if you're if it's in a nash League park,
- 1:03:05Speaker 7: every guy on the Nash League roster was wearing his
- 1:03:07Speaker 7: National League home uniform, and every player in the American
- 1:03:10Speaker 7: League was wearing their American League road uniform, vice versa.
- 1:03:13Speaker 7: If it was in an American League park. That was
- 1:03:15Speaker 7: the fun, part of the fun part of that. Always,
- 1:03:18Speaker 7: I never wanted to miss the introduction of the All
- 1:03:20Speaker 7: Stars along the baseline, even if I had to miss
- 1:03:23Speaker 7: parts of the game for work or something else or
- 1:03:26Speaker 7: dinner or this or that, I didn't want to miss
- 1:03:27Speaker 7: the introduction of the All Stars. And even that's kind of,
- 1:03:31Speaker 7: you know, been altered a bit by them all wearing
- 1:03:33Speaker 7: that same color uniform. And I understand about marketing and
- 1:03:36Speaker 7: stuff like that. And and and remember Cam, when we
- 1:03:38Speaker 7: were in the stands here at Globe Life there we
- 1:03:42Speaker 7: saw a bunch of people wearing those goofy jerseys. You know,
- 1:03:46Speaker 7: one was like tan color and the other was teal.
- 1:03:49Speaker 6: It was. It was really weird.
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: I think what's happened, Craig is with all the new
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: uniforms and the City edition and connect editions, no one
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: even knows what their home or away uniform is. That
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: that's the issue there. We have too many, too many uniforms.
- 1:04:03Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, which just gave me an idea. When we
- 1:04:07Speaker 7: come back from the break, I want you to bump
- 1:04:10Speaker 7: back with talking heads life during wartime. Okay, I'll explain
- 1:04:16Speaker 7: Oxplain to come out and we're gonna hear from Rodney
- 1:04:18Speaker 7: Terry coming up next when we continue. By the way,
- 1:04:20Speaker 7: still scoreless Arizona ol miss with Arizona batting in the
- 1:04:24Speaker 7: top of the fifth inning in the second game of
- 1:04:27Speaker 7: these three games, Texas and Louisville scheduled for a seven
- 1:04:29Speaker 7: o'clock start here tonight, the season opener for Long Worn
- 1:04:32Speaker 7: Baseball Hunting m thirteen under the Zone.
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: Back to the Craig Way Show.
- 1:04:41Speaker 10: Connect with Craig through the text line by text Team
- 1:04:43Speaker 10: Texas to eight one five three zero, followed by your message.
- 1:04:47Speaker 10: Standard message and data rates may apply.
- 1:05:15Speaker 7: There's a reason I asked Cameron to bump back with this,
- 1:05:17Speaker 7: not only because this ain't no party, this ain't no
- 1:05:21Speaker 7: disco the Saint, no fooling around, and what's the other
- 1:05:25Speaker 7: that this is no time behind for dancing or lovey dovey.
- 1:05:28Speaker 6: I got no time for that now.
- 1:05:31Speaker 7: Now He's got a line in the song near the
- 1:05:33Speaker 7: end of the song David Byrne does with talking heads,
- 1:05:36Speaker 7: and it reminded me of what you were saying about
- 1:05:39Speaker 7: all of the City connect jerseys and the alternate jerseys
- 1:05:44Speaker 7: and all these other jerseys and pro sports where we're
- 1:05:46Speaker 7: seeing teams where dark colors both of them on the floor.
- 1:05:50Speaker 7: At the same time, there's a line at the end
- 1:05:53Speaker 7: of the song where David Byrne says, I've changed my
- 1:05:56Speaker 7: hairstyle so many times now I don't know what I
- 1:05:59Speaker 7: look like. And so it made me think of think
- 1:06:03Speaker 7: about that, you know, because they wear that, Because people,
- 1:06:05Speaker 7: what are the real colors of the uniform? Every team seems
- 1:06:08Speaker 7: to have a black in its uniform or an alternate
- 1:06:12Speaker 7: black jersey. There's even long worn fans are calling for
- 1:06:16Speaker 7: the Longhorns to wear a black helmet or a black
- 1:06:19Speaker 7: jersey top or whatever.
- 1:06:22Speaker 6: And Crystal Kanfie has stood.
- 1:06:23Speaker 7: Firm on that, by the way, and he responds to
- 1:06:25Speaker 7: a lot of folks you know on Twitter and says, Nope,
- 1:06:27Speaker 7: we've got class uniforms. We're gonna stick with the Icy Whites,
- 1:06:30Speaker 7: and we're gonna stick with the burnt orange. And I
- 1:06:33Speaker 7: always think back to what coach Royle said when somebody
- 1:06:35Speaker 7: asked him about that when he was the ad back
- 1:06:38Speaker 7: in the seventies and asked him about that, and he said, hello,
- 1:06:42Speaker 7: he said these you know, he goes, these are work clothes.
- 1:06:45Speaker 7: We don't want to candy them up. That was the
- 1:06:47Speaker 7: way he described it back then. The Longgorns, I think
- 1:06:52Speaker 7: will be in the regular traditional home whites tomorrow night
- 1:06:54Speaker 7: when they take on the Kentucky Wildcats, and Kentucky will
- 1:06:57Speaker 7: be in its traditional blue I think coming in important
- 1:07:01Speaker 7: matchup for Texas, playing another ranked opponent, and they're probably
- 1:07:05Speaker 7: gonna be a little bit shorthanded again and they're gonna
- 1:07:07Speaker 7: have to deal with guys like Lamont Butler, the outstanding
- 1:07:10Speaker 7: guard who had transferred in from San Diego State, and
- 1:07:13Speaker 7: Otega Away who started at O You and Jackson Robinson
- 1:07:16Speaker 7: who started at BYU. It's a really good basketball team.
- 1:07:19Speaker 7: And last night Long Worn Weekly with Rodney Terry, we
- 1:07:22Speaker 7: always have one segment where we do the opponent breakdown,
- 1:07:25Speaker 7: where we look at the opponent. Here's our conversation about
- 1:07:27Speaker 7: the Kentucky Wildcats. Well, it's a pretty well known program.
- 1:07:30Speaker 7: The Kentucky Wildcats coming in on Saturday night. How about
- 1:07:34Speaker 7: your thoughts on what this particular group of Wildcats looked
- 1:07:40Speaker 7: like and what a job Coach Pope has done with
- 1:07:42Speaker 7: that group.
- 1:07:44Speaker 13: I'm gonna piggyback real quick on Candae. Yeah for having
- 1:07:48Speaker 13: Texas fight. That's true, Texas fight, right that is today true.
- 1:07:52Speaker 6: Well done, Texas fight for him right there.
- 1:07:55Speaker 13: That should be an inspiration for my guys right there
- 1:07:57Speaker 13: showing up today after surgery. Big time answer your question. Uh,
- 1:08:03Speaker 13: Coach Post done a great job. I mean, uh, he
- 1:08:06Speaker 13: put together basically a brand new team, you know, and uh,
- 1:08:10Speaker 13: you know, they got off to a great start. They've
- 1:08:13Speaker 13: got they shoot the ball extremely well. I mean, Brah's
- 1:08:17Speaker 13: one of the top shooters and all the college basketball
- 1:08:20Speaker 13: put together.
- 1:08:21Speaker 6: Uh uh.
- 1:08:22Speaker 13: The biggs in there that that are that are really good.
- 1:08:25Speaker 13: Brandon Garrison's playing really well for those guys. Amir Williams
- 1:08:29Speaker 13: is a really good player. Cards are really another, really
- 1:08:31Speaker 13: good bigs. Their bigs are really good playmakers for their guards.
- 1:08:35Speaker 13: You know, Butler's really good. Butler was a starting guard
- 1:08:38Speaker 13: in San Diego State, you know, on the final fourteen,
- 1:08:41Speaker 13: you know, and so you know, he put together some
- 1:08:44Speaker 13: really good pieces. They're leading score old way.
- 1:08:46Speaker 7: Yeah, you know in Oklahoma we played in two years
- 1:08:49Speaker 7: in Oklahoma.
- 1:08:50Speaker 13: Strong you know, he scored in double figures over twenty
- 1:08:54Speaker 13: four games, and you know, and you know he is
- 1:08:56Speaker 13: really a problem getting to the basket. Strong body great.
- 1:09:01Speaker 13: But but they they're they're an offensive team. I mean
- 1:09:03Speaker 13: when he was at YU last year, his teams could
- 1:09:06Speaker 13: really score the basketball. They spread you out. He's got
- 1:09:09Speaker 13: a really good playmaker with the big guy though a Warrior,
- 1:09:12Speaker 13: is a really good passer. And uh, you know, they
- 1:09:15Speaker 13: put a lot of pressure on you defensively with their
- 1:09:17Speaker 13: spit game, the zoom actions in terms of things you
- 1:09:21Speaker 13: have to do to protect the basket.
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: They've got a.
- 1:09:23Speaker 13: Couple of really good shooters, so shooter defense is gonna
- 1:09:25Speaker 13: be really important. But they play fast in transition like
- 1:09:27Speaker 13: everybody in this league. And uh, they've gotten better defensively.
- 1:09:32Speaker 7: I was gonna ask about it take away because, like
- 1:09:34Speaker 7: I said, we saw him play for Oklahoma, but it
- 1:09:36Speaker 7: looks like his game has really developed now as.
- 1:09:39Speaker 6: Opposed to the time.
- 1:09:40Speaker 7: Not that he wasn't good at Oklahoma, but but now his.
- 1:09:43Speaker 6: Game is matured and development.
- 1:09:45Speaker 7: Like you mentioned the fact he's a slasher and a
- 1:09:47Speaker 7: guy can can be a real defensive challenge for you
- 1:09:49Speaker 7: can he was a good player at Oklahoma.
- 1:09:51Speaker 13: I mean he was a problem last year for us
- 1:09:53Speaker 13: in terms of a guy that can really put pressure
- 1:09:55Speaker 13: on the basket. I mean, he has a has a
- 1:09:57Speaker 13: strong body. I mean, he's a good looking kid. Now
- 1:10:00Speaker 13: the plays in the NFL, and so he's got great
- 1:10:02Speaker 13: pedigree in terms of the family there and everything.
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: But but he's a problem.
- 1:10:07Speaker 13: And he's improved in shooting every year. Now he can
- 1:10:10Speaker 13: you know, he can step out there and make a
- 1:10:11Speaker 13: three as well. But but uh, and he's a really
- 1:10:14Speaker 13: good defender. You know, he'll be a guy that has
- 1:10:17Speaker 13: has to go trade quite a bit as well and
- 1:10:19Speaker 13: everything too. So he gives them a he gives them
- 1:10:21Speaker 13: a presence on both both sides of the ball.
- 1:10:24Speaker 7: Is this a team, judging from some of the games
- 1:10:26Speaker 7: I've seen them players like the Florida game and some
- 1:10:28Speaker 7: of the other games where he had some real high
- 1:10:29Speaker 7: scoring games where tempo is gonna mean an awful lot
- 1:10:34Speaker 7: in this game simply because of the way they can
- 1:10:36Speaker 7: score the basketball.
- 1:10:37Speaker 13: No, absolutely, I mean we're gonna have to make them
- 1:10:39Speaker 13: work defensively and and make them have to go on
- 1:10:42Speaker 13: to us as well. But uh, you know, value taking
- 1:10:45Speaker 13: care of the basketball, getting good shots on our terms
- 1:10:47Speaker 13: is gonna be really important for us. Uh because again
- 1:10:50Speaker 13: they're gonna play fast, and they can shoot the basketball
- 1:10:52Speaker 13: and they can put pressure on the basket. You know,
- 1:10:55Speaker 13: they shot the ball well over the last couple of
- 1:10:57Speaker 13: ball games. I mean, they're shooting really well, much better
- 1:11:00Speaker 13: in conference play than they even did a non conference.
- 1:11:03Speaker 7: You made a great point in pointing out how the
- 1:11:06Speaker 7: game in game out, night in, night out fight in
- 1:11:09Speaker 7: the SEC. Uh, every single team in this conference has
- 1:11:13Speaker 7: gone through it where things have been up and then
- 1:11:16Speaker 7: maybe come back now a little. But even even Auburn
- 1:11:19Speaker 7: that had had the one conference loss there where things
- 1:11:22Speaker 7: did not go well for them and then they they
- 1:11:23Speaker 7: bounce back. Tennessee has had some great moments and then
- 1:11:26Speaker 7: they've lost two games to Kentucky.
- 1:11:28Speaker 6: Kentucky lost to Vanderbilt.
- 1:11:30Speaker 7: There's a teams are taking their their shots at other teams, obviously,
- 1:11:36Speaker 7: and it's such a grind. The mental part of it
- 1:11:39Speaker 7: is as much as the physical isn't on a night in,
- 1:11:41Speaker 7: night out basis, I mean.
- 1:11:42Speaker 6: It really is.
- 1:11:42Speaker 13: I mean, I think again, you've got to play great
- 1:11:45Speaker 13: in this league. You know every night. You know you're
- 1:11:47Speaker 13: not gonna play perfect.
- 1:11:49Speaker 6: But you have to.
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: Play really really good every night to win in this league.
- 1:11:53Speaker 6: Winning in this.
- 1:11:54Speaker 13: League is really really hard and difficult, uh. And you
- 1:11:58Speaker 13: have to try to again, you know, be healthy and
- 1:12:03Speaker 13: try to have your best players available to be able
- 1:12:05Speaker 13: to play as well because you need you need every guy,
- 1:12:07Speaker 13: You need every kind in this league. So you know,
- 1:12:10Speaker 13: that's an important point. That's why I say a lot
- 1:12:12Speaker 13: of times, you know, we don't give credit to our
- 1:12:15Speaker 13: training staffs because you know, when you come out of
- 1:12:18Speaker 13: these games after forty minutes, it's it's been a battle.
- 1:12:21Speaker 7: Yeah, between Warren Young and your strength coach Darby Rich.
- 1:12:25Speaker 6: Those two guys.
- 1:12:26Speaker 7: Uh, they've been kind of, as we say, working overtime,
- 1:12:29Speaker 7: both of those guys, they kind of work in concert,
- 1:12:30Speaker 7: UNDI in terms of the conditioning as well as the
- 1:12:33Speaker 7: training physical part of it.
- 1:12:35Speaker 13: Well, you can go through the game and as a coach,
- 1:12:37Speaker 13: you're coaching a game and and maybe you didn't see
- 1:12:40Speaker 13: a play or maybe you didn't see a guy get hurt.
- 1:12:44Speaker 13: And at the end of the game, and that night
- 1:12:47Speaker 13: or the next morning, you know, you get the report hey,
- 1:12:50Speaker 13: it's not gonna be available, you know, the next game
- 1:12:53Speaker 13: because of something that happened in the game. I mean
- 1:12:55Speaker 13: we Trey Mhonton plays the whole Arkansas game, but didn't know,
- 1:12:59Speaker 13: you know, early in the latter part of the first half,
- 1:13:02Speaker 13: he took a really good physical contact play that really
- 1:13:07Speaker 13: caused the problem for shoulder was almost dislocated, and so
- 1:13:11Speaker 13: he couldn't play the next ball game, you know.
- 1:13:13Speaker 6: So, but just things like that you have to be.
- 1:13:15Speaker 13: An adapt and adjust to. And that's why you have
- 1:13:19Speaker 13: to have a full allotment of guys as well.
- 1:13:21Speaker 7: And even guys that you get all the way through
- 1:13:23Speaker 7: a game might take enough of a physical toll and
- 1:13:26Speaker 7: palning that you might not have them available practice the
- 1:13:30Speaker 7: next time. And it's kind of tough. And then when
- 1:13:31Speaker 7: you don't have your full compliment of guys on the
- 1:13:33Speaker 7: floor for practices you prepare for the next opponent, it's.
- 1:13:36Speaker 13: Definitely is challenging. I mean, you still have to try
- 1:13:39Speaker 13: to have competitive practices.
- 1:13:40Speaker 6: You just can't practice for a long.
- 1:13:41Speaker 13: Period of time this day in time, you you know,
- 1:13:44Speaker 13: you go bout an hour an hour and fifteen at
- 1:13:46Speaker 13: the most, because you need those guys to be fresh
- 1:13:49Speaker 13: and ready to go in gage because the games are
- 1:13:51Speaker 13: so taxing and so hard that you have to keep
- 1:13:55Speaker 13: your guys fresh this time of year.
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: That's writing Terry's conversation with Craig Way last night at
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: Longhorn Weekly with coach Cherry live at the West Campus
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: Pluckers location off Rio Grande, And to Artie's point about
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: not being able to practice so aggressively and tough and
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: a lot of physicality in practice. It's such a tough
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: league already, but when so many of your guys are
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: already banged up, obviously you want to lay off in practice.
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: But when it gets to game time and you play
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: a team like Arkansas who's able to practice a lot
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: more physicality because they're a healthier team, you see that.
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: So it's a very tough balance for our team, this
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: basketball team right now, trying to stay healthy but also
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: trying to be prepared physically nine to night out in
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: the best conference in college basketball. A quick little preview
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: with the Kentucky Wildcats. We talked about in the first
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: hour what Mark Pope has been able to do in
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: all the transfers he's brought in. Kind of like Alabama,
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: Kentucky is a team that loves to shoot the three pointer.
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: They make about ten per game, think about twenty six
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: per game, thirty eight percent from beyond the arc, that's
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: first in the SEC. Overall, They're not a super big,
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: imposing team. They've right dound the ball about the same
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: as Texas, especially on the offensive boards. But they shoot
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: the ball really well and they move the ball really well.
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: So for Texas to pull off an upset tomorrow at
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: Moody Center have to limit the damage done by Kentucky
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: on the three point line. We saw Arkansas, or rather sorry,
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: we saw Alabama heat up against Texas. Their a team
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: that loves to shoot the three. Don't shoot it great,
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: middle of the pack in the SEC, but they shot
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: it great against Texas fifty nine percent from three seventeen
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: to twenty nine. I mean, that's absolutely absurd to shoot
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: fifty nine percent from three, especially in college basketball. You
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: do that, you're going to win the game. So Texas
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: got to be able to defend the three point line
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: and limit the transition offense from Kentucky. Craig Way set
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: the way for a second recording his pregame interview, which
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: imslash As Texas Baseball begins thurs season The Night six
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: forty five airtime on thirteen hundred The Zone against the
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: Louisville Cardinal. Up next, We're gonna hear from Vic Schaeffer
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: and close out today's program on The Craigway Show on
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: thirteen hundred The Zone.
- 1:16:14Speaker 3: Texas trying to get the lead back. Here's Preston. Brie
- 1:16:18Speaker 3: floats it down to old Egger running the floor and
- 1:16:20Speaker 3: she knocks it down. Texas with the one point lead
- 1:16:25Speaker 3: in the ball three minutes Togo Preston hesitation contact pull
- 1:16:28Speaker 3: up jumper is good.
- 1:16:30Speaker 4: Yeah, the hesitation got her free, just kind of froze
- 1:16:32Speaker 4: the defender for a split second.
- 1:16:35Speaker 3: Bri taking it to the bucket, fade away, in and
- 1:16:39Speaker 3: out and in.
- 1:16:40Speaker 5: Yeah, Brie is getting really deep into the paint off
- 1:16:44Speaker 5: of the dribble.
- 1:16:45Speaker 3: Booker on the move down the paint, lays it up
- 1:16:48Speaker 3: and in first points for Booker.
- 1:16:49Speaker 4: Yeah, that is where Booker is at her best right
- 1:16:51Speaker 4: there in the open floor, grabs the rebound and takes
- 1:16:54Speaker 4: off with the basketball.
- 1:16:55Speaker 3: Five point lead again for Texas. One nine to go
- 1:16:58Speaker 3: here in the second quarter, ten seconds to go here,
- 1:17:02Speaker 3: Booker now makes her move, gets a screen. Booker crossover,
- 1:17:05Speaker 3: baseline jumper good three in a row. Four seconds to
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: go and Tyler gets it off and it's off the mark.
- 1:17:13Speaker 3: What a finish for Madison Booker and Texas goes to
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: the half with their biggest lead of the game, thirty
- 1:17:19Speaker 3: three to twenty five. Booker gets it down on the block,
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: goes up count the basket and she's fouled. Madison Booker
- 1:17:28Speaker 3: with an N one opportunity. She's hit her last five
- 1:17:31Speaker 3: shots from the field. Harmon wide open, drops it down
- 1:17:33Speaker 3: to Taylor Jones who lays it in and gets Vould again.
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: What an unselfish play by Rory Harmon. She had a
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: wide open fifteen footer, but instead an and one opportunity
- 1:17:42Speaker 3: for Jones and Texas is up by twenty Rory driving
- 1:17:47Speaker 3: on Amore backs it in, turns around twelve footter is good.
- 1:17:50Speaker 3: Oh what a big time for her first basket.
- 1:17:52Speaker 5: Yeah, what a great answer by Rory Harmon.
- 1:17:54Speaker 4: The little fade away right there, Kipper dribble live enough
- 1:17:56Speaker 4: to be able to get the shot she wanted.
- 1:17:58Speaker 3: Now Jordan Lee does not take the Threeci'll get to
- 1:18:02Speaker 3: the baseline Booker. That baseline jumper is good.
- 1:18:04Speaker 5: Yeah, great job by Booker.
- 1:18:06Speaker 4: Very great patience by Shay Holly to get her the
- 1:18:09Speaker 4: basketball down on the baseline.
- 1:18:11Speaker 3: Now Booker baseline jumper. It's good back to back from
- 1:18:15Speaker 3: book She has fifteen and the lead is back to
- 1:18:18Speaker 3: eighteen sixty seven forty nine. Long Horns can just dribble
- 1:18:21Speaker 3: this thing out. What an impressive win on the road
- 1:18:23Speaker 3: against the eighth ranked team in the country to hold
- 1:18:26Speaker 3: on to their piece of first place and move to
- 1:18:28Speaker 3: eleven and one in SEC play.
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: Sixty seven to forty nine.
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: Victory over number eight Kentucky last night for the third
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: ranked Texas Longhorns and now the host fifth ranked LSU
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: Sunday at Moody Center and what will be a sellout
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: for Texas women's basketball.
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: Finic Schaefer spoke.
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: With the media earlier this morning about the win over
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: Kentucky and facing LSU and wanted to bring you some
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: of his sound from this morning at his media availability.
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: So we'll start out with this and this is a
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: question that I pose is to Coach Schaeffer this morning.
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: There's been a couple of games for Texas on the
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: road midweek games like Kentucky, Texas A and m Ole
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: Miss and then some at home like Tennessee where they're
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: coming off. You know, a tough schedule for these kids.
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: And there are games that I'm not gonna say that
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: we wouldn't notice they would lose. But if you lost,
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: you think, okay, you know, hey, they just beat number
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: two South Carolina, you got number five LSU. You know,
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: maybe it's just a trap game. And at some point
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: in these games Texas, you know, it might be tight.
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: You know, maybe Texas trails or they did the Kentucky
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: in the second quarter like A and M the second half,
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: Ole miss in the fourth quarter. But Texas time and
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: time again have found a way to pull away and
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: end the game with some sort of run and pull
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: out the victory on the road. So I asked Coach Schaeffer,
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: is that a testament to the team's mental strength and
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: confidence in playing basketball right now?
- 1:19:58Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 1:19:59Speaker 11: I think too, it's our ability to adjust, you know,
- 1:20:02Speaker 11: we get a feel for what the other team's doing.
- 1:20:06Speaker 11: And then also I think it's our ability to wear
- 1:20:09Speaker 11: people down. I thought the press was really good last night.
- 1:20:12Speaker 11: We forced two or three five second counts, but we
- 1:20:16Speaker 11: just I thought we really kind of wore them down
- 1:20:18Speaker 11: a little bit as the game went on and you know,
- 1:20:21Speaker 11: I just I feel like, you know, even when when
- 1:20:24Speaker 11: people have to bring their five players up to set
- 1:20:26Speaker 11: screens on my guards to get open, that's something a
- 1:20:29Speaker 11: five player usually doesn't have to do. So it takes
- 1:20:32Speaker 11: that focus to make sure they're not setting illegal screens
- 1:20:35Speaker 11: because they don't need an extra file, and it takes
- 1:20:38Speaker 11: an explosive effort by a point guard to get open.
- 1:20:41Speaker 11: When you do that over the course of a game,
- 1:20:44Speaker 11: that's just added things that you don't usually have to
- 1:20:46Speaker 11: do during the course of a game. And so I
- 1:20:50Speaker 11: think that that's part of it as well, and it's
- 1:20:53Speaker 11: just part.
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: Of why we do what we do.
- 1:20:55Speaker 11: It's you may not get the results in a turnover
- 1:20:59Speaker 11: or things like that, but I think over.
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: Course of a game, you wear people out and you wear.
- 1:21:05Speaker 11: Them down and next thing you know, you got some
- 1:21:08Speaker 11: point guard pointing to a two guard going, hey, you
- 1:21:10Speaker 11: get it, I'm going to take this one off you
- 1:21:12Speaker 11: try to get open, and so I just think that's
- 1:21:15Speaker 11: what happens, and again that's why we do what we do. Again,
- 1:21:20Speaker 11: our half court defense has been really good, y'all. Kids
- 1:21:23Speaker 11: are playing at an incredible level, playing really hard, really tough,
- 1:21:27Speaker 11: and again very intentional. They understand the scalt I watched
- 1:21:31Speaker 11: this play last night. I watched how intentional we were
- 1:21:35Speaker 11: defending Kentucky. You know, all facets. We were really good.
- 1:21:39Speaker 11: So we just got to continue that. The part that
- 1:21:41Speaker 11: concerns me is when the mental goes, that's when you
- 1:21:44Speaker 11: kind of get where you're not really focused and you're
- 1:21:47Speaker 11: not intentional, and you're just out there. So just trying
- 1:21:50Speaker 11: to get them through this weekend and keep them sharp,
- 1:21:53Speaker 11: keep them focused, and then next week we'll have a
- 1:21:55Speaker 11: couple of days to kind of get our breath a
- 1:21:58Speaker 11: little bit, regroup and and kind of recover a little bit.
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: And by regrouping, he means after Sunday, when Texas does
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: have a midweek by they play l Shoe Sunday, but
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: then no game during the week until Saturday, when they
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: return back in action on Saturday. One other note one
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: to get to from Fixed Shaft from his media availability
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: from earlier today. Kim Ok obviously a very polarizing head coach.
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: Fick has had a lot of experience coaching against her
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: when he was the assistant head coach at Texas A
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: and M, and she was at Baylor for twenty one
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: years and then the overlap when Texas got to or
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: when fix shafor got the Texas and Molkie's final year
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: at Baylor, So there's been some overlap there in some history.
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: And Vick was asked about what problems do kim Oke's
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: team persent and what makes her such a good head
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: coach and why does LSU have such a good basketball.
- 1:22:54Speaker 2: Team this season.
- 1:22:55Speaker 11: Well, again, I think she's She's always had really good players,
- 1:22:59Speaker 11: always played pretty hard. Uh, you know, they always have
- 1:23:03Speaker 11: a good plan. Her assistants do a good job. You know,
- 1:23:08Speaker 11: she's got a veteran over there that's been been doing
- 1:23:10Speaker 11: a lot of wars and he does a great job
- 1:23:13Speaker 11: with her for defensively, So you know, I just think,
- 1:23:17Speaker 11: you know, our teams are always you know, well prepared defensively.
- 1:23:22Speaker 11: And then you know they always have great guard play
- 1:23:25Speaker 11: and uh and lord knows they got it right now.
- 1:23:28Speaker 11: They've got really good guards and and.
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: So and they're you know, they just they really attack you.
- 1:23:35Speaker 11: So you've got to really do a good job play
- 1:23:37Speaker 11: good team defense and and try to do a good
- 1:23:40Speaker 11: job of limiting them on the things that they're really
- 1:23:44Speaker 11: good at. And that's hard when you play those kids
- 1:23:46Speaker 11: because a lot of them can do a lot of things,
- 1:23:49Speaker 11: so it's just a I think it's a combination of
- 1:23:52Speaker 11: those things, and probably there's some more stuff in there
- 1:23:54Speaker 11: that I'm missing.
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: Texas takes on l s us Sunday, two pm tip
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: off time, and you can listen to it one forty
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: five airtime on one O three one, Austin's eighty station,

- 1:24:07Speaker 1: the call and me Cameron Parker will be joining him
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: as the analyst. Up next, Craig will be back to
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: close out today's Friday edition of The Craigway Show on
