- 0:03Speaker 1: Epstein Chronicles. In this episode we're going to pick up
- 0:06Speaker 1: with the Hillary Clinton transcript from her trip to Congress. Question,
- 0:12Speaker 1: did Mr. Waite ever inform you what Ms. Maxwell did
- 0:15Speaker 1: for a living? Answer, not that I recall. Question, did
- 0:18Speaker 1: anyone ever indicate to you what Ms. Maxwell did for
- 0:21Speaker 1: a living? Answer, not that I recall. Question, when would
- 0:26Speaker 1: be the last time that you've either communicated with Ms.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Maxwell or even if not directly yourself, but been around Ms. Maxwell? Answer,
- 0:34Speaker 1: the best of my recollection is at the wedding in 2010. Question,
- 0:38Speaker 1: would you consider Ms. Maxwell a friend? Answer, no. Question,
- 0:42Speaker 1: would you consider her a friend of President Clinton? Answer,
- 0:46Speaker 1: he'll have to answer that. Question, would you consider Ms.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Maxwell a friend of your daughter? Answer, she was probably
- 0:52Speaker 1: friendlier with her than I was because I didn't see
- 0:55Speaker 1: her very often. Question, how often would your daughter have
- 0:58Speaker 1: seen Ms. Maxwell? Answer, I have no idea, but again,
- 1:02Speaker 1: it was in the context of her being in a
- 1:04Speaker 1: relationship with Ted Wade. Question, anyone else in your family
- 1:08Speaker 1: have a relationship of some kind with Ms. Maxwell? Answer, well,
- 1:13Speaker 1: that's my family you asked about Bill and Chelsea. Question,
- 1:16Speaker 1: and just to make clear for the record, have you
- 1:18Speaker 1: ever met Jeffrey Epstein? Answer, I do not recall meeting
- 1:22Speaker 1: Jeffrey Epstein. In preparation for this hearing... I was told
- 1:25Speaker 1: that he attended an event at the White House that
- 1:27Speaker 1: was put on by the White House Historical Association, but
- 1:30Speaker 1: I have no recollection of that. Question. And only that
- 1:34Speaker 1: one time at the White House Historical Association? Answer. That's
- 1:38Speaker 1: the only time that I'm aware of that I might
- 1:40Speaker 1: have possibly been in the same room with him. Question.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Did you have an initial impression of Mr. Epstein? Answer.
- 1:46Speaker 1: I have no recollection of Mr. Epstein. I'm just told
- 1:50Speaker 1: that he was in a room at a dinner. that
- 1:52Speaker 1: we were hosting for the White House Historical Association. Question,
- 1:56Speaker 1: what was your understanding of what Mr. Epstein did for work? Answer,
- 2:00Speaker 1: I knew nothing about him. He was there as an
- 2:02Speaker 1: invited guest by the White House Historical Association. That's my
- 2:06Speaker 1: best recollection. Question, and no one else informed you what Mr.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Epstein did for work? Answer, no, but we had hundreds
- 2:13Speaker 1: and thousands of people who came to the White House.
- 2:15Speaker 1: I was not informed of what people did or didn't
- 2:18Speaker 1: do for work, especially someone that I have never had
- 2:21Speaker 1: a conversation with. Question, do you know who invited Mr.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Epstein to the White House? Answer, I can only tell
- 2:28Speaker 1: you what I know, which is that he apparently was
- 2:30Speaker 1: a guest invited by the White House Historical Association to
- 2:34Speaker 1: attend a dinner to thank people who gave money to
- 2:36Speaker 1: the White House Historical Association for the upkeep and maintenance
- 2:40Speaker 1: of the White House. That's what I informed of in
- 2:43Speaker 1: preparation for coming here. Question, yes ma'am, and understanding we
- 2:47Speaker 1: focused the last few questions of your time in the
- 2:50Speaker 1: White House with President Clinton... After that time period of
- 2:53Speaker 1: President Clinton's administration, did anyone ever tell you what Mr.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Epstein did for a living? Answer, I don't recall ever
- 3:00Speaker 1: talking about Mr. Epstein. He was not on my radar.
- 3:03Speaker 1: He was not somebody that I had any connection to. Question,
- 3:07Speaker 1: when President Clinton was traveling with Mr. Epstein on Clinton
- 3:10Speaker 1: Foundation business, no one associated with the foundation at that
- 3:14Speaker 1: time discussed Mr. Epstein with you? Answer, not that I recall.
- 3:17Speaker 1: I was not involved with the foundation. I was a
- 3:19Speaker 1: senator from New York. and I was deeply committed to
- 3:22Speaker 1: my work, and it became one of the most intense
- 3:24Speaker 1: experiences of my life when we were attacked on 9-11.
- 3:29Speaker 1: I was not involved with what was happening to create
- 3:31Speaker 1: the foundation to create the work that was done to
- 3:34Speaker 1: get low-cost drugs for AIDS. I knew about the work.
- 3:37Speaker 1: I didn't know about the details. Question understood, and to
- 3:41Speaker 1: be clear, you've never had any communication yourself with Mr. Epstein,
- 3:45Speaker 1: whether it be face-to-face interaction, phone calls, emails, text messages...
- 3:50Speaker 1: Her lawyer jumps in, asked and answered, you can answer
- 3:53Speaker 1: it again. Question, I have no recollection in any way
- 3:57Speaker 1: of ever having any conversation at the White House or
- 3:59Speaker 1: in any other place or any other kind of device
- 4:02Speaker 1: of any sort. I knew nothing about him. Question, and
- 4:07Speaker 1: when did you learn of Mr. Epstein's 2006 indictment and
- 4:10Speaker 1: subsequent arrests leading to his incarceration in 2008? Clinton, I
- 4:15Speaker 1: have no idea. I wasn't paying attention. I was running
- 4:18Speaker 1: for re-election in 2006. I ran for president in 2007
- 4:21Speaker 1: and 8. I don't know that I ever learned about
- 4:25Speaker 1: it until much later when more things came out about him.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Question understood. And when did you first learn of Mr.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Epstein's arrest in 2019? Answer, probably when it happened because
- 4:36Speaker 1: it was headline news. I'm sure I, like everybody else,
- 4:39Speaker 1: saw it in the press. And in seeing it in
- 4:42Speaker 1: the press, did you discuss Mr. Epstein or his case
- 4:45Speaker 1: at the time with anyone? Answer, I'm sure we did
- 4:48Speaker 1: because it was a big story. Question, and Mr. Epstein
- 4:51Speaker 1: died in custody following his 2019 arrest. When would you
- 4:55Speaker 1: have learned of his death? Answer, whenever it was reported. Question,
- 4:59Speaker 1: going back slightly a question, you said you likely would
- 5:02Speaker 1: have talked to someone regarding his arrest in 2019. Who
- 5:06Speaker 1: would have discussed that with you? Answer, whoever was around.
- 5:10Speaker 1: I mean, it was a big story, as you recall.
- 5:12Speaker 1: It was a very big story. I don't have any
- 5:14Speaker 1: specific recollection. It wasn't something that I particularly focused on,
- 5:18Speaker 1: but it was a big story. Question, and going back
- 5:21Speaker 1: to Ms. Maxwell, when did you learn of her arrest
- 5:23Speaker 1: in 2021? Answer, again, whenever it was reported as happening. Question,
- 5:29Speaker 1: and did you discuss that with anyone? Answer, I'm sure
- 5:31Speaker 1: I did. It was another big story. Question, and who
- 5:35Speaker 1: would those discussions have been with? Answer, I don't have
- 5:38Speaker 1: any specific recollection. Question, so moving forward in time just
- 5:41Speaker 1: a little bit, you were a Secretary of State under
- 5:44Speaker 1: President Obama, is that correct? Answer, it is. Question, and
- 5:48Speaker 1: it was during his first term. 2009 through 2013. Answer,
- 5:53Speaker 1: that's correct. Question, and after you completed your time as
- 5:56Speaker 1: Secretary of State, did you return to any role in
- 5:59Speaker 1: the Clinton Foundation? Answer, I did. I became active in
- 6:02Speaker 1: it at that point. Question, and by being active in it,
- 6:05Speaker 1: could you describe for us what that means? Answer, tried
- 6:08Speaker 1: to support the work that Bill and my daughter and
- 6:10Speaker 1: the team had done and look for ways to be helpful.
- 6:13Speaker 1: It was something that I wanted to make sure I
- 6:16Speaker 1: could support. Question, and please correct me if I'm wrong.
- 6:19Speaker 1: you rejoined the board, a board member, is that right? Answer,
- 6:23Speaker 1: that might have been the first time I was a
- 6:25Speaker 1: board member, I don't remember. Either the first or the
- 6:27Speaker 1: second time, yeah. Question, and speaking of, it sounds like
- 6:31Speaker 1: you were heavily involved when you returned to the foundation,
- 6:34Speaker 1: where I guess started with the foundation at this point.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I'm trying to accomplish those goals and initiatives, what you
- 6:39Speaker 1: were doing, broadly speaking, on a daily basis, monthly basis,
- 6:43Speaker 1: that sort of thing. Answer, well, I wanted to start
- 6:47Speaker 1: a program about early learning for kids, and so we
- 6:50Speaker 1: started something called Too Small to Fail, which I was
- 6:53Speaker 1: very actively involved in with my daughter. And we work
- 6:56Speaker 1: with pediatricians and other people to help parents, grandparents, aunts,
- 6:59Speaker 1: and uncles read, talk, and sing to their children so
- 7:02Speaker 1: that they could help build brain cells. That was a
- 7:05Speaker 1: major priority of mine, and I'm very proud of what
- 7:08Speaker 1: we built and the difference that it's made in millions
- 7:11Speaker 1: of kids' lives. I certainly did what I could to
- 7:13Speaker 1: support the work that we do overseas through the Clinton
- 7:17Speaker 1: Global Initiative, which has had a terrific track record of
- 7:20Speaker 1: bringing people together to work in partnerships, to make commitments,
- 7:24Speaker 1: to try to improve everything from clean water to solar energy,
- 7:27Speaker 1: to improve education, all of the priorities that the partners
- 7:31Speaker 1: we have bring to us that we try to help with. Question,
- 7:35Speaker 1: and thank you for that, Madam Secretary. We've had a
- 7:38Speaker 1: few members join us. Would you guys please announce yourselves
- 7:40Speaker 1: for the record? Pat Fallon, 4th District of Texas. Scott Perry,
- 7:46Speaker 1: 10th District, Pennsylvania. Mr. Grant, thank you both. Question, and Ms. Secretary,
- 7:52Speaker 1: as a board member, what type of responsibilities does that entail? Answer, oh,
- 7:56Speaker 1: attending the board meetings, approving the agenda for work for
- 7:59Speaker 1: the year, the budget that goes out, that kind of responsibility. Question,
- 8:04Speaker 1: and you mentioned Clinton Global Initiative. Just for clarity, I'd
- 8:07Speaker 1: like to refer to that as CGI as we go
- 8:10Speaker 1: forward with this. CGI is part of the Clinton Foundation,
- 8:14Speaker 1: is that correct? Answer, yes. Question, and what was your
- 8:17Speaker 1: role with CGI at this time period right after you
- 8:20Speaker 1: left being Secretary of State? Answer, it was again to
- 8:24Speaker 1: support the staff that put together both the annual meeting,
- 8:27Speaker 1: but also work during the year with our partners who
- 8:30Speaker 1: made commitments to help them fulfill their commitments. So if
- 8:33Speaker 1: there were a meeting about a commitment that was being
- 8:35Speaker 1: made to get clean water to some very remote place,
- 8:38Speaker 1: if there were a meeting, I might be invited to
- 8:41Speaker 1: it to meet with the partners to encourage them. It
- 8:43Speaker 1: was mostly around the work that happens throughout the year
- 8:46Speaker 1: in preparation for the annual meeting. Question, and forgive my
- 8:50Speaker 1: ignorance please, what happens at those annual meetings? Answer, so
- 8:54Speaker 1: annual meetings are a way for people to come together
- 8:57Speaker 1: to make commitments that they have previewed with our staff.
- 9:00Speaker 1: So I'll give you an example. Probably around, oh I
- 9:04Speaker 1: don't know, somewhere between 12 and 15 years ago, I
- 9:07Speaker 1: don't know specifically, Matt Damon, the actor, came to the
- 9:09Speaker 1: Clinton Global Initiative because he said he really cared about
- 9:12Speaker 1: clean water And could we connect him with people that
- 9:15Speaker 1: he could work with to get more clean water in
- 9:17Speaker 1: more places in the world? So we did. We connected
- 9:21Speaker 1: him with this gentleman who was a real expert on
- 9:23Speaker 1: clean water. They started working together. They created something called water.org,
- 9:28Speaker 1: which was a Clinton Global Initiative commitment that was made
- 9:31Speaker 1: at the annual meeting. And then our staff work with them.
- 9:35Speaker 1: And I think it's fair to say that they've been
- 9:36Speaker 1: one of the most successful organizations in actually delivering clean water.
- 9:41Speaker 1: But it's that kind of work. It's people who might
- 9:43Speaker 1: have a good idea. Maybe they've got some resources. Maybe
- 9:46Speaker 1: they have some experience. I'll give you another idea. So
- 9:50Speaker 1: Procter & Gamble called us and said, one of our scientists,
- 9:53Speaker 1: one of our chemists in the UK, has created this
- 9:55Speaker 1: packet of chemicals that can literally make the dirtiest water
- 9:59Speaker 1: clean enough to drink. But we don't know what to
- 10:01Speaker 1: do with it because we're a consumer company that sells
- 10:04Speaker 1: products to middle class people. This is something that would
- 10:07Speaker 1: go to the very poor. What do we do with
- 10:09Speaker 1: it if we come to CGI? Can you connect us
- 10:12Speaker 1: with somebody who can help us? So we connected them
- 10:14Speaker 1: with World Vision and I think maybe one or two
- 10:17Speaker 1: other organizations. And so, They used the packets to literally
- 10:20Speaker 1: go around the world cleaning water. And Bill went with them.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Chelsea went with them. And they would go to a
- 10:26Speaker 1: rural Myanmar or a rural Kenya and they would take
- 10:30Speaker 1: this bucket of dirty water and they'd dump a packet
- 10:32Speaker 1: in it. And then my daughter and my husband would
- 10:34Speaker 1: drink it to show it was clean. And that was
- 10:37Speaker 1: a CGI commitment. We bring together governments, local, state, national, business, philanthropies, NGOs, academics,
- 10:45Speaker 1: Anybody who has a good idea that we can help
- 10:47Speaker 1: them work on and try to fulfill. And that's what
- 10:49Speaker 1: we do. Question and thank you. The Clinton Foundation started
- 10:54Speaker 1: shortly after your husband, President Clinton, left office. Is that correct? Answer.
- 10:58Speaker 1: That is correct. All right, folks, we're going to wrap
- 11:00Speaker 1: up this episode right here. And in the next episode,
- 11:03Speaker 1: dealing with the topic, we're going to pick up where
- 11:05Speaker 1: we left off. All the information that goes with this
- 11:07Speaker 1: episode can be found in the description box.
