- 0:04what is going to get your photographer
- 0:06to walk across the yard or walk to the very back of the yard
- 0:10when it's their last shoot.
- 0:11They're cold or hot, they're hungry, and they have to use the bathroom,
- 0:15but they know the best angle is in the back corner of the yard.
- 0:20What's going to get them to spend the extra 10 minutes to do that?
- 0:24Welcome to the Spiro podcast.

- 1:38All right.
- 1:38So with that aside, let me introduce the Spiro
- 1:42founder and owner and our co-host of the podcast, Todd Kivimaki
- 1:46Hey, welcome back to another week, Todd
- 1:48Crai, It's fabulous to be back.
- 1:50What a fast start of the year this is.
- 1:53Yeah, this has gone by really quick.
- 1:55You know, one one activity.
- 1:57I'll just dive right in here.
- 1:58And this is not the topic of the podcast, but one thing that I am doing
- 2:03and I have a post with some more detail in it
- 2:06on the Spiro Super User Facebook group.
- 2:09And then also if you are a REPP coaching student,
- 2:13I have posted in the channel and there to your forward students.
- 2:17I am time tracking Craig I am back on that.
- 2:21We've talked about this a little bit and I'm doing it because I feel like
- 2:26the year is going very fast already and I don't like that feeling.
- 2:31I want to make sure I know where my time is going.
- 2:34It's the one thing I have that I can get more of
- 2:38No matter how much money I have,
- 2:42you know, you know any, any type of asset, you know, tying along with this week
- 2:48but you can't get more time is what I'm trying to communicate.
- 2:52And I want to go back to a quote that
- 2:55I didn't come up with, but I learned from a coach.
- 2:59He said, when you're young, you will trade
- 3:04all of your time for money.
- 3:08However, when you are old,
- 3:11you will trade all of your money
- 3:14to get more time.
- 3:17And so I didn't like this feeling, Craig, of coming in,
- 3:20and I felt like I was more reactive and I felt like we were getting things done.
- 3:23We were super busy.
- 3:24So the media business has been so busy, busy.
- 3:27Spiro has been insanely busy, which is great.
- 3:30I love that's what we work towards.
- 3:32Craig, You said you had a great busy week for me though.
- 3:35I was like, Ooh, I woke up in the middle of the night
- 3:39three nights ago and I remember I didn't reply to Michael.
- 3:43It was like, Oh crap.
- 3:44Michael There was an email from his assistant in my inbox.
- 3:48I said, I responded right away, said, Hey, thank you so much for this.
- 3:50Let me review and I'll get back to more detail.
- 3:52And I didn't do that.
- 3:54Two or three days went, I don't like that. What?
- 3:56So I said, Todd, think of all the other things
- 3:59you've done that weren't that productive.
- 4:02And we run a business like clients are our number one priority.
- 4:07And that did not sit
- 4:09well with me that Michael's assistant was waiting on me.
- 4:12So anyways, long story short, I just thought, Todd, you've got some time
- 4:16bandits in there and let's figure out what you're doing.
- 4:20And again, even if you are very efficient with time,
- 4:24looking at a daily time sheet of what you do is great.
- 4:29Because if we want to grow, most of us in here, we're all overachievers.
- 4:32in here, if you're listening to this, you're an overachiever.
- 4:35You have started a business taking the leap, thinking about taking the leap,
- 4:39and you want to grow that business that you're not like everyone else.
- 4:45True
- 4:46So you are an overachiever.
- 4:48If you are listening to this, if you want to grow,
- 4:51you've got to protect your time and you've got to put your time and energy
- 4:55into the activities that are going to move your business
- 4:59the furthest along.
- 5:03You know, again, this isn't the topic for this week,
- 5:05but I can't help but think of a time waster.
- 5:09One of the biggest ones for for many of us is video shorts.
- 5:13Okay. We're in the media business, right?
- 5:15We're all about producing media and viral media and helping
- 5:19agents, realtors get their you know, get their brand out there.
- 5:23And we all do it through media.
- 5:25And man it's so easy to scroll through, you know, TikTok videos.
- 5:28Well, maybe TikTok that might be getting banned
- 5:31or you know, YouTube shorts or any of that.
- 5:34I think think of how much you could get done even
- 5:37by just eliminating the the mindless scroll.
- 5:40And, Todd.
- 5:41I'll admit I get sucked into that sometimes.
- 5:44And I feel like I've developed like adult onset A.D.D.
- 5:47where it's hard to focus.
- 5:49But yeah, by time tracking if you write down literally the number of minutes
- 5:53that you spend doing an activity and then start creating time blocks,
- 6:00I guess I'm trying to relate this
- 6:01to the whole idea of multitasking and trying to do it all at once.
- 6:05And we're not.
- 6:06Correct me if I'm wrong,
- 6:07but we're not wired to multitask, at least not do it well.
- 6:11Well, we're not.
- 6:12There is no multitasking.
- 6:13It is switch tasking.
- 6:15It is not good for your brain.
- 6:17Yeah, maybe that's a topic for next week we can dive into.
- 6:21We've talked about it before, but it be good review that
- 6:25You know Craig, this is so not on our topic.
- 6:27So maybe we're going to rename the darn thing.
- 6:29Now we'll get back to our topic, but
- 6:31I had a very similar experience with YouTube Facebook shorts.
- 6:36So part of all of our businesses is
- 6:38we actually need to be on social media channels.
- 6:42And I get on I set time aside for Facebook because there are some groups
- 6:47that I want to make sure that I participate in and I help
- 6:51and attend, and I'm part of the conversation when needed.
- 6:55And I scroll those darn things too.
- 6:57And you know what?
- 6:58So what we're going to do,
- 6:59this is going to be a confession of what shorts you're going to give up.
- 7:02I have not clicked one since the beginning of this year.
- 7:05I won't click them.
- 7:06I don't watch them. They're a waste of time.
- 7:08There's two that there's two that I would watch and one I like.
- 7:11And one was just stupid, just stupid, mindless time.
- 7:14The first one is there's this
- 7:17individual on I can't remember his name as,
- 7:19but he's out of Austin, Texas, and he goes around and he interviews
- 7:22millionaires and billionaires and successful people on the street.
- 7:25And I'll ask them, what's the biggest thing
- 7:26that you that led up to this?
- 7:28And he just gets like
- 7:30very quick and like really great information from them.
- 7:33And I would click on I liked it.
- 7:35But the problem is, is I would watch one, two, three, ten
- 7:38like, why am I doing this?
- 7:39So I gave that up the second I gave up and I'm going to admit this to you all
- 7:43because this is such this
- 7:47it was created, though I want you all to know
- 7:50and I'm going on a rant here, Those social media was created to
- 7:57navigate to a part of your brain
- 7:58and exploit it to continue to get you addicted to it.
- 8:01So the dopamine hit that you get all.
- 8:04So yeah, call me, call me crazy on or call me a conspiracist,
- 8:08but I believe it's true.
- 8:09And so the other one I would watch, I'm just going to tell you and you tell me
- 8:13what you're giving up in the comments below.
- 8:16Okay? Tell me what video you watch.
- 8:17You're like, I can't believe I watch this thing, Todd,
- 8:19Because I got to tell you what I watched there is this guy
- 8:22who would act like he's like a gang member and he would act.
- 8:26He would have a really hard, like, mean face.
- 8:29And he'd go off to people like in big cities downtown
- 8:33and he'd be like, Yo, homey, you want to slice, you want to get sliced.
- 8:37And he would say, like, Have you seen that guy?
- 8:40I’ve seen that guy
- 8:42To the guy that is doing that.
- 8:44I don't know his name, but I would watch these dumb things.
- 8:46I'd be like, Oh my gosh, he's so bold and like, look at where he's at.
- 8:51And he would keep a straight face and he would keep doing it.
- 8:54And then some guy would walk up with a pizza
- 8:56box and like, Hey, you want a slice of pizza?
- 8:58And sometimes they would like and sometimes they would chase him.
- 9:01So stupid.
- 9:02You all right?
- 9:03Like, stupid, like, why am I, like,Todd?
- 9:06You're 42 years old.
- 9:07You have a you have a wife, kids and businesses, and you're
- 9:12watching this guy talking about, hey, homey, you want a slice?
- 9:16So a full confession.
- 9:17I've given that up.
- 9:19I am just saying it out there.
- 9:20Please tell me the mindless video that you're giving up in the comments
- 9:23below and we'll give them all up together.
- 9:27I'm ashamed to admit I just watched too many in general.
- 9:31I think I just.
- 9:32I'm just need to go cold turkey.
- 9:35- Let's do it together, Craig, - I've got a garage to clean.
- 9:37It's been sitting there for the last two years.
- 9:39You know,
- 9:41if I spend 10 minutes a day instead of scrolling
- 9:44and go work on the garage, I'd have a great looking garage.
- 9:48Simple, but not easy.
- 9:49Right Right.
- 9:51Okay. Okay.
- 9:52Well, a great, great intro to the episode where we're going to be
- 9:57we're introing a future episode topic about time management.
- 10:02But this week's topic we're going to get to in just a second.
- 10:05But first, we always like to let you know what's going on
- 10:08with the Spiro software updates that are coming through.
- 10:12So, Todd, what what do we have this week?
- 10:14Yeah, I will make it quick because
- 10:15I didn't make the first part quick, but we just pushed some updates a week ago
- 10:19and we're cognizant and put your branding first and we put in many other things.
- 10:24We've talked about that, so I won't take the time.
- 10:26A couple of points I want to make to you as we are creating what we're calling
- 10:30and Shannon's calling.
- 10:31It's her brainchild, the Spiro Academy.
- 10:35So this is going to be learning for you time that you learn, not only Spiro,
- 10:39but we want to give you market insight.
- 10:42We got such great
- 10:44feedback from the broker dealer presentation from the market update,
- 10:48and we want to be generous with that information.
- 10:51Share that all to you.
- 10:53So there's 21 years from me and Shannon has a ton of knowledge
- 10:58that is like,
- 10:59Oh, there's different types of brokerages, traditional, you know, capping,
- 11:04transactional, all of those things all matter when you are running
- 11:08and navigating a business.
- 11:09So we're creating the Spiro Academy to give back to you to spend time with you.
- 11:14These are going to be sessions where some of the team, myself, Shannon,
- 11:18are going to be online with you in a webinar based fashion
- 11:23to help you, to help you hit your goals, to help you better understand Spiro
- 11:27But also the bigger reason of why we created Spiro, how it fits into
- 11:31growing and scaling your business.
- 11:33So excited for that to come,
- 11:34you will see those start to hit, those schedules start to hit.
- 11:37If you are not part of the Spiro Super User group and you are Spiro user,
- 11:41please jump in there.
- 11:43We give great information.
- 11:44You typically hear about it first in there.
- 11:46Also, we hint to new releases as well.
- 11:50So join the group if you’re Spiro User.
- 11:52We'd love to have you in there.
- 11:53Absolutely. Good deal. That's exciting.
- 11:56Yeah, I'm excited about it.
- 12:00Well, let's dive in this week. Todd.
- 12:02No guest this week, but we are going to be working
- 12:04on having some more guests join us here on the Spiro podcast.
- 12:07But Todd, this morning we record this on Friday mornings
- 12:11and we have our staff meeting on Friday mornings as well.
- 12:14And you shared a little bit about
- 12:19what's the word.
- 12:19I'm looking for a venture that we have in
- 12:22recruiting some new photographers for Wow video tours.
- 12:25And you talked a little bit about, you know, how to how to build culture
- 12:30with our photographers and let them know that they're cared for their, you know,
- 12:35the the
- 12:36your photographer is for your business is really your biggest asset.
- 12:41And we want to talk about covering your assets this week.
- 12:45And so
- 12:49this is very much business
- 12:51related because you may or may not have heard this before.
- 12:54And I'll just open with this, Todd, and then you can you can dive in and comment.
- 12:58But the cost of retaining an employee
- 13:02or a contractor, you know, 1099s,
- 13:06retaining them in and continuing to invest in them and grow
- 13:10them is much, much smaller
- 13:13than the cost of recruiting and training.
- 13:16A new team member.
- 13:20I did a quick search and now the number is escaping.
- 13:23But how much I think it's the cost of losing a veteran team member
- 13:28is something like their salary or salary and a half
- 13:33is the expense of losing somebody and having to hire new a new one.
- 13:37Yeah. And I was like, Whoa.
- 13:39I mean, I knew it was more, but I didn't realize how much.
- 13:45So do you want to kind of dive in, Todd,
- 13:47and talk with us a little bit about
- 13:51the business impact of caring for your photographers?
- 13:56For sure there.
- 13:57So let's think about this.
- 13:58If you have a photographer right now
- 14:01on your team or if you're thinking about hiring a photographer
- 14:04or if you are the only photographer, you will resonate more with this.
- 14:08I will tell you the further away you get from
- 14:11being that sole photographer
- 14:14and put yourself into the business owner just naturally.
- 14:19You know, it's the law of elasticity.
- 14:21The more naturally you forget about
- 14:24being in the trenches every day as a photographer.
- 14:28So, for example, in our area, many areas throughout the U.S.
- 14:31and the world that are in winter, it was
- 14:35dangerously cold
- 14:36this week for us and our markets, like dangerously
- 14:40a couple of days, like -10 to 20 Fahrenheit with the wind chill.
- 14:46And I had one of our most seasoned
- 14:50photographers come in and just spend a little time with him this week.
- 14:53And we'll get to some strategy of things that you should be doing with your team.
- 14:58But just small talk.
- 15:00Before we got into a few questions I had for him
- 15:02talking about was so bad on Tuesday.
- 15:05That was the day that it was that cold.
- 15:07He was outside for 10 minutes and couldn't feel his hands, didn't know
- 15:10that he was really pushing the buttons because he was so frozen.
- 15:15And think about this, you know, and those those you
- 15:17that are shooting, you're like, Yeah, I'm doing it.
- 15:19And those are you there in Florida?
- 15:20Like, yeah, it's worse in the summer because it's like I'm in an oven.
- 15:22But you are asking someone on your team to go out there on your behalf,
- 15:28wear your polo shirt with your logo, your hat or whatever it is,
- 15:33and you really need them to replace you,
- 15:38right?
- 15:38I mean, this is this is business.
- 15:39But for those you that forgot about that transition,
- 15:42I think Craig will have a story to tell with this.
- 15:45But remember the first time that you sent another photographer
- 15:49and how nervous and any feedback and remember
- 15:53anyone you sent on your behalf is not going to be you.
- 15:56A good goal is they're 70 or 80% of you and that's great.
- 16:02No need to get them anymore.
- 16:04So that's just one thing to remember,
- 16:08is that your face, the face of your company
- 16:13is in the hands
- 16:16daily with your photographers.
- 16:19at Wow we have a sales team.
- 16:22Okay, so Craig is on the sales team.
- 16:24He does a hybrid role.
- 16:25We have four other salespeople
- 16:29and we have a team and we have a manager and we have a director.
- 16:32That's a lot of people that are selling, right?
- 16:35They are a fraction
- 16:37of the input that we have with our team or with our clients.
- 16:41Excuse me,
- 16:43No matter how
- 16:44much interaction they have, you know, on a busy summer day,
- 16:47if we shoot 80, that's 80 opportunities that our photography team,
- 16:5280 appointments can potentially see.
- 16:55an agent say they're there half the time, an agent or a homeowner
- 16:59because homeowners
- 17:00are really your clients too remember they're your client's client.
- 17:04That's about 40 times No matter how hard the team of five
- 17:08or six worked, we would not see 40 clients in a day.
- 17:12So I just say that because there's times where you're going
- 17:16to review your photographers media and you're like, Oh,
- 17:19why did they do that?
- 17:21Why did they angle down the camera?
- 17:24Why did they stand inside the room?
- 17:27Why did they shoot it at that angle?
- 17:29Why did they say that thing to a homeowner or a client, or why were they late?
- 17:35But remember,
- 17:37they're not the owner of the business.
- 17:40No one will ever care for it as much as you are.
- 17:42And that's that's okay.
- 17:44That's actually a good thing.
- 17:47And they are out there
- 17:48doing all the little things for you every single day.
- 17:52So I truly believe that they are your largest asset in your business.
- 17:56Right?
- 17:57And so you want to cover them well and invest in them well,
- 18:02you know, one thing that that we've talked about, Todd, before
- 18:05in our in our staff meetings and elsewhere
- 18:08is how easy it is for a photographer that's serving
- 18:12a particular market to feel like they're out on an island by themselves.
- 18:15And,
- 18:18you know, you can get that lonely feeling and you shared a little bit
- 18:21and I'm guilty of this when you're out by yourself working,
- 18:28it's kind of a nice thing.
- 18:30There's a lot of aspects I like about that being a photographer out
- 18:33in my own market, but it's also somewhat alienating.
- 18:37And you can start to have conversations in your head
- 18:40that may or may not be true and a lot of times probably aren't true
- 18:45where you start having perceptions or thoughts about your company, you know,
- 18:50the people that you're doing this work for, you know, say, as a contractor.
- 18:55And if that business owner or management team
- 18:59supervisor or whatever isn't making a vested
- 19:04taking a vested interest in that photographer
- 19:06and really engaging them purposefully,
- 19:09they're going to they're going to feel alone.
- 19:10They're going to feel not a part of the culture, not a part of the company.
- 19:13It's just a paycheck. They're just out.
- 19:16There's a a disconnect.
- 19:19So Todd, I would ask you, you know, from a from an owner’s standpoint
- 19:23and even maybe what Wow is doing right now to try and minimize that disconnect,
- 19:27what what are some good practical tips
- 19:30or strategies that say, Wow is working on
- 19:34to to engage our photographers and build a just a cohesive unit
- 19:40and make those photographers feel part of the part of the family, the company.
- 19:44The family.
- 19:45Yeah. I love to share.
- 19:47So currently, and this is just what we're doing at Wow.
- 19:49So currently we well, let me step back a few months ago
- 19:54because there's some value in some things we've been doing.
- 19:57So a couple of months ago, the team called every single photographer
- 20:02and we asked them how things are going.
- 20:05You know, what can we help with?
- 20:07And this was informal.
- 20:08This is just along the day when we knew that they weren’t in a property.
- 20:13And the way we know they're not in a property
- 20:14is because in Spiro they check in and check out a jobs are on site tracking.
- 20:18We understand where they're at.
- 20:20So just a fabulous tool that, you know, when you're photographer
- 20:23is done with the job, when they're in, you know, in route to the next property.
- 20:27So we called them again.
- 20:28And that's somewhat about knowing and understanding your photographers.
- 20:32If you even have a great intentions of calling
- 20:35all your photographers and you call them when they are in a house
- 20:38or their drones is in the air, first, they're like, why is Todd calling?
- 20:42Right?
- 20:43I mean, always, no matter, no matter how big or small you are,
- 20:46when the owner calls, everybody goes, Why is the owner calling me?
- 20:51Even if you think
- 20:52you have a fabulous relationship
- 20:53with each one of your photographers and you might no matter,
- 20:58no matter
- 20:59what, when you call them, they're like, Hey, the boss is calling.
- 21:02Okay.
- 21:02That was a that was a thought I used to have in my head.
- 21:05I was like, Oh, I'm just friendly Todd
- 21:08So understand
- 21:09that there is a priority when your number shows up on their phone,
- 21:13then there's some stress of I'm
- 21:14in a house, I'm with a client, I have the drone in the air
- 21:18or even I'm driving. I can't answer right now.
- 21:20So just something as little as understanding
- 21:23the right time to call your photographers is important.
- 21:27It you know, it it further confirms that you understand them.
- 21:32That then gets them the buy in that gets them to walk across the yard
- 21:36when it's -20 out and take the best shot.
- 21:40You know, that's what that's your that's your goal.
- 21:42I've said that before
- 21:43and I want to say it on this podcast, but what is going to get your photographer
- 21:47to walk across the yard or walk to the very back of the yard
- 21:51when it's their last shoot.
- 21:52They're cold or hot, they're hungry, and they have to use the bathroom,
- 21:56but they know the best angle is in the back corner of the yard.
- 22:01What's going to get them to spend the extra 10 minutes to do that?
- 22:05It’s your relationship.
- 22:06We talk about relationships all the time, understanding them.
- 22:11So we have called all of our photographers and I did not call them.
- 22:15And specifically I did not call them
- 22:16because I didn't want my name to show up on their phone.
- 22:20I don't have a lot of interaction with the photographer, so
- 22:22I'm very aware of when I do have interaction
- 22:26and it didn't feel it was necessary to have me call.
- 22:29We had Brittany and Jess called and that's normal for them
- 22:33and we collected really great feedback.
- 22:34We jotted it all down, we took it into consideration.
- 22:37And so they heard from us and, you know, I'll tell you that.
- 22:39I'll tell you that
- 22:40a lot of them said, Hey, it's really great that you're asking these things
- 22:44or they would Slack Brittany or Jess afterwards.
- 22:46And hey, thanks.
- 22:46Thanks for checking in.
- 22:47Like, I don't really have any feedback right now, but it's good to hear from you.
- 22:50I really appreciate that.
- 22:51I'll let you know if anything comes up.
- 22:54That's a simple thing that you can do to show people you care.
- 22:59It's free, it's easy.
- 23:00Just takes a little bit of your time.
- 23:03Then from
- 23:04there we we realize through projections that our goals for 2025
- 23:09that we were going to need to hire more photographers.
- 23:12I guess I think we're we're we're we're trying to hire
- 23:16six right now as what we're trying to hire.
- 23:19And in that we realized that it was time to talk to
- 23:24some of our most seasoned photographers, the ones that have the most experience.
- 23:29And we'll review some of our training practices and procedures.
- 23:34Now we have a very, very detailed training guide.
- 23:38So our previous trainer who was with me
- 23:42for a very long time, he was fabulous of what he did.
- 23:45He created a very detailed training guide, video
- 23:49series, training guide, expectation. we have levels.
- 23:53He's he's a schoolteacher.
- 23:55In fact, he went back into the school system, which I'm happy I'm sad
- 23:58that we don't have his expertise here, but I'm super happy for him.
- 24:02He is back at the school his kids go to, but he created a curriculum
- 24:06for our photographers and we felt very special.
- 24:10We feel it's great, but we don't feel that anything is ever perfect.
- 24:14So we're now collecting feedback on that process of how we train photographers.
- 24:19That is, we have four pillars here at Wow.
- 24:23With the way we train individuals, we feel that it contains four things,
- 24:27and the first one is
- 24:30finding and
- 24:31onboarding new photographers, onboarding and training.
- 24:35So that is pillar one and that's where we're focused on because we are trying
- 24:38to hire six photographers right now.
- 24:41Awesome. Well, with growth.
- 24:42Yeah, we definitely need to add to the team, Todd.
- 24:45So it is exciting.
- 24:47It's also scary, you know, new group of people coming in to, to get trained.
- 24:51And again, there's a business expense to that,
- 24:54but it's not always a bad thing If you're in a growth mode
- 24:57and you have to add people, you're not replacing necessarily.
- 25:01So let's let's kind of go back to that.
- 25:04So we're adding photographers
- 25:05because we're growing and we're very thankful for that.
- 25:08But we want to make sure that is is we continue to take care of and in value.
- 25:14Our current photographers, our veterans, those that have been with us,
- 25:18whether it's a short time or have been with us multiple years.
- 25:24You you talked a little bit
- 25:25about having some of the veterans in to to talk about
- 25:31caring for the rest of the team out in the field.
- 25:34So what and why are we having the veterans come in
- 25:37to to talk with with you and in the leadership about that?
- 25:41Yeah. Great question.
- 25:42So there's there's
- 25:43a lot of strategic decisions around this of why we've had them come in.
- 25:47So when we were collecting feedback
- 25:51it started some other discussion with team members
- 25:54and they came from some of our most seasoned
- 25:57and we realize how much they cared, like they truly cared.
- 26:01And they said things such as
- 26:03I want to make sure that everyone in my city
- 26:07is trained and has as many services as possible
- 26:11because it looks because we look bad as a team.
- 26:16If one photographer is not doing video the right way,
- 26:19not shooting the right angles, things like that, we went, Oh my goodness.
- 26:23Like, wow, that thing.
- 26:25Okay, so think about that for those of you that that don't know our company makeup,
- 26:30at Wow we have subcontractors for our photographers
- 26:34and to have a subcontractor say, Hey, I want to make sure
- 26:37that the team knows
- 26:40how to do the services because collectively as a whole,
- 26:44it might impact all of our jobs and impact my jobs.
- 26:48I mean, think about that.
- 26:49Like if if you send a new photographer out and a client is not happy
- 26:54with that, they assume that that is the look of your entire company
- 27:00and they assume that either your quality has gone down
- 27:03or something different or they're going to maybe try a competitor.
- 27:07So we heard some really great things from our team and then we also heard
- 27:12some ideas
- 27:14from them for training and asking,
- 27:17hey, can we, you know, can we help do this in the field?
- 27:21Can we help?
- 27:22So it got us thinking of like maybe there's positions here to make people
- 27:27something that we in the past have called like a regional trainer or
- 27:30and that is
- 27:31the one of the most experienced person and one of the best teachers in the city.
- 27:35And some of what they do is they spend time
- 27:39helping correct issues and gaps with photographers in the field.
- 27:44And so things like that were said, Craig,
- 27:46that we know they're so much more in their head
- 27:48and we don't want to assume, even though that we have a incredibly built out
- 27:53process for training, onboarding and the progression of skills.
- 27:58We don't want to assume it's perfect because we need to pivot
- 28:01and adapt and change as the mark in our business changes.
- 28:07You know what you said about one photographer
- 28:10having a skill set versus another that might not be doing it quite the same.
- 28:13And so our clients are wondering, yeah, what has a quality gone down?
- 28:18I mean, that's that's a real thing.
- 28:20Let me give you a personal example.
- 28:23So I've got one other photographer in my market that we shoot.
- 28:27You know, we both shoot.
- 28:28I do a majority of them, but I felt really bad.
- 28:31Todd,
- 28:32because this photographer shared a comment with me
- 28:36just in the last day or two that they feel like
- 28:38the client is disappointed when they show up and it's not me
- 28:42and my heart sank because, I mean, I, I care about people
- 28:45and I don't want this photographer to feel that way.
- 28:48I mean, I value the relationships I've built,
- 28:50you know, over over the multiple years.
- 28:52But I want them to be successful and feel like they're valued by our clients.
- 28:56And that just not just by the company,
- 28:59but there is an experience difference.
- 29:02I've been doing this a lot longer and so clients have gotten used to
- 29:05a certain look and a certain way, you know, that I shoot,
- 29:08which is mostly mostly the training that I've gotten, you know, from Wow.
- 29:13But clients can notice even small differences
- 29:16that I don't even necessarily see myself.
- 29:20So taking the time to invest in that photographer,
- 29:24to really replicate results will go a long way.
- 29:27And I tried to encourage this person, hey, you know,
- 29:30they're they're used to me because I've been doing this since 2017.
- 29:35I've built relationships.
- 29:37So I want to encourage you, don't give up,
- 29:39you know, go back to your training, review things, look at things that
- 29:43I've shot that other photographers in other markets have shot
- 29:46and just try and replicate what you can, you know, minimize
- 29:50any differences that you might have.
- 29:52And look at it is building relationships that you're part of that realtor's team.
- 29:57You're not just a photographer, you're part of their sales force.
- 30:00You're part of that, helping them win new listings
- 30:03and really try and bracket yourself that way and think of yourself that way
- 30:07so that when you're interacting with them, they sense that from you, that you're
- 30:10not just there to shoot some pictures, but you're there.
- 30:13Part of their marketing team
- 30:14and as you do that, as you communicate to them your desire
- 30:18to help them grow their business, you're going to develop the same relationship
- 30:21that I have with them because that's how I position myself
- 30:24in, in the market that I serve.
- 30:27So if if our messaging and our our tactics
- 30:30in ways we shoot are are constant,
- 30:34they're going to start to trust you more as well.
- 30:36So don't give up.
- 30:38So all yeah all of that to say consistency
- 30:41and taking the time to invest in your photographers
- 30:44and help them to see the why of what they're doing.
- 30:47Yeah, I love that. Craig.
- 30:49Craig, I'm asking you a question and, and, and I'll ask you this question on Monday
- 30:54when you're for
- 30:55you all, Craig is going to be part
- 30:56of that group, too that's coming in on Monday for our company.
- 31:00But I'm going to ask this now because I think this is something that
- 31:03I'm very curious about.
- 31:05Oh, boy, no pressure.
- 31:09And this is the reason why we ask questions, because it's like I just
- 31:13I simply don't Yeah, there is no pressure because I don't know this.
- 31:16Do you think that consistency
- 31:19do you think it's more technical
- 31:22or do you think it's more client service
- 31:25of where
- 31:27that photographer has or do
- 31:29they show up because it's not warm, friendly Craig
- 31:32that knows about their family, that knows about
- 31:36has a history with them or are they disappointed?
- 31:39Because when they get that link, they go, Oh,
- 31:44Craig's reflections not in the mirror.
- 31:47And it's How do you know what to say?
- 31:50Sorry,
- 31:51Is that the is it like, oh, this these angles
- 31:55are just that much better,
- 31:58You know, That's a hard one.
- 32:01That's a hard one to answer, Todd, Because I think it's a little bit of both.
- 32:05Okay.
- 32:06So back when I was on my own and had my own business,
- 32:09I had another photographer that was shooting quite a bit for me.
- 32:13And I would get comments where
- 32:17they're not they're just not taking quite the right same angles.
- 32:20And I would go back through their media and look at like, I'm happy
- 32:24with these these angles and composition.
- 32:28And I would I remember one client specifically that complained
- 32:33about showing I think it was was it too much ceiling or too much floor.
- 32:37Okay, a common.
- 32:38yeah and and I told this realtor, I said,
- 32:42I'm going to confess I would shoot this the exact same way.
- 32:46I just
- 32:47I have to be honest with people.
- 32:52So I do hear feedback from clients
- 32:55that they'll first go to the technical part of it.
- 32:59Well, it's just not the angles that you take, you know?
- 33:02And sometimes that is true.
- 33:04I have seen pictures that I would not have taken
- 33:07or compositions that I wouldn't have formed because that's not part of our training.
- 33:11So there there is a legitimate aspect of that.
- 33:15So it's definitely part of that.
- 33:19But the other part of it is
- 33:21the other photographers that I've worked with in my market,
- 33:25there is an age difference.
- 33:26Let me let me start there. There's an age difference.
- 33:28Okay. I'm going to leave that one alone. Craig.
- 33:30I'm just gonna.
- 33:31that I think this is a legitimate part of it, though.
- 33:34Okay?
- 33:35For those of you watching, you see the gray in the goatee, right? Go.
- 33:40You can't see it.
- 33:40Well, maybe you can see a little straight straight there.
- 33:43I'm 48 years old.
- 33:44Okay.
- 33:45I'm I'm closing in on the half century mark and I'm getting very introspective
- 33:49about that.
- 33:50But I think with age comes
- 33:52some built in trust because people don't see you as the kid, right?
- 33:57Is the inexperienced.
- 33:59It doesn't matter how good you might be.
- 34:01Sometimes people will look down on you because of your age
- 34:04and not have any faith in you.
- 34:06Now, you can't you can't let that get you down.
- 34:08You just you have to work all that much harder to earn their trust.
- 34:11Right.
- 34:12For those that are older, that have been around the market for a little while,
- 34:16you've got kind of built in trust and hey, this this is,
- 34:20you know, a kid coming up just coming out of college.
- 34:24And there is things that you learn with time and how to interact with people,
- 34:28how to interact with clients confidence that is built with time.
- 34:33Todd If if you had taken me even just ten years ago,
- 34:37I would not have the confidence level to speak with people about the business
- 34:40that I'm in that I have now.
- 34:42It's a good point
- 34:43and it only comes because of experience and time.
- 34:46You know, I've gotten to learn this industry
- 34:48and so there's some things I can now pretty comfortably talk about.
- 34:52So when
- 34:53when you have, say, a younger person that is on your team out there shooting
- 34:58the realtors that they're dealing with
- 35:01might just not have the trust in them because they're
- 35:05because of the age difference and because of the
- 35:08of experience in building business relationships, how to communicate.
- 35:11There are differences.
- 35:13So that part of what I try and
- 35:16teach the photographers
- 35:18that I'm working with in my market is one little, one little.
- 35:22I don't want to call it a trick because I mean it, but I'll say to a seller, Hey,
- 35:26you made a great choice in choosing so-and-so as your realtor.
- 35:29They're really investing in their media and marketing for you.
- 35:33And not everyone does that.
- 35:34Not all the realtors that I see in the market do this.
- 35:36So you've got a great realtor.
- 35:39it’s a great line
- 35:41It's a line, but it isn't.
- 35:42But it's part of yeah, I mean, yeah, no, I know what you mean,
- 35:47but it's part of positioning ourselves as a company and as a, as a photographer,
- 35:52but as a marketing specialist is part of that Realtor’s team.
- 35:55So there's an added value that they didn't just hire a photographer,
- 35:59they hired a marketing consultant.
- 36:01Now someone that's new in the business that's younger
- 36:04might not think of positioning themselves that way or communicating that way
- 36:08in front of a seller and or the realtor that's standing right there
- 36:12that gets a little grin when they hear them, you know, say that
- 36:17so long answer to a short question.
- 36:19Honestly, I think it's both, because I've I've run into both.
- 36:23Yeah.
- 36:23I think.
- 36:24Such as you were saying all that, Craig, I agree 100%.
- 36:29And the split what it is we can all argue on,
- 36:32but say it's 50, 50, 50%, you have to be above the level
- 36:37of technicals to not raise red flags.
- 36:43And then 50% you need to give
- 36:47a higher level customer service.
- 36:50It's again, we're a service business.
- 36:53This is the feelings.
- 36:57Some of the feelings that they get
- 36:59at the appointment are then reflected on the end product.
- 37:04Just simply think about it.
- 37:05Think about it both ways.
- 37:06So if they have a bad feeling
- 37:09after the appointment because of the photographer,
- 37:12we all know they're going to pick apart those images like none other.
- 37:16Yeah, I'm going to expand on that.
- 37:19So but back when I was on my own, the photographer
- 37:22I had shooting with me younger guy, college age.
- 37:26He's the one that was producing photos that I was happy with.
- 37:29I thought they were good composition, they were good angles, but I would hear
- 37:33people pick those things apart, but they would also say
- 37:36most of them, he's he's very nice, but he's just so quiet.
- 37:40Yeah.
- 37:41So they took that quietness as shy, awkward slash even.
- 37:46I had one person that thought he was rude.
- 37:48And this guy. he was not rude.
- 37:51He was not rude at all.
- 37:52He was the nicest guy you'll ever meet.
- 37:54But because he was quiet, they took it as rude.
- 37:57So, yeah, their perception of.
- 37:59Of personality and or communication will impact that.
- 38:02Their technical pick a part of the media.
- 38:05Yeah. Yeah.
- 38:07And it goes opposite way too as to where if you leave that appointment
- 38:12and you have just wowed them you know you put on your song
- 38:15and dance, you walk out, they're like, Yeah, those people are great.
- 38:19You could produce crap and they're never going to say it.
- 38:22Okay, case in point.
- 38:24So I never produce crap.
- 38:25But you.
- 38:26I've shot real estate photography 21 years ago.
- 38:28It was not great.
- 38:31You know, Ryan, I.
- 38:32Ryan is
- 38:35our trainer at Wow.
- 38:36Who built that So many some of you know that name.
- 38:38But anyways we shot a lot of houses like
- 38:42thousand, 1500, a lot of year properties
- 38:46and looking back over and some of this is just a migration
- 38:50from my memories probably going, but I don't remember one complaint come in
- 38:55like I just don't now they weren't as picky.
- 38:58Remember 20 years ago people were photos on a Sony maverick
- 39:02three and a half inch floppy.
- 39:04So I had lower expectations.
- 39:06But you know what?
- 39:07And this is me being conceited, but when I walked out of that house, man,
- 39:11I wowed those people.
- 39:12They were like, man, that this.
- 39:14And they would just look at it and you would get by with things
- 39:18that are like, yeah, that wasn't so great.
- 39:20But the experience and their expectations mentally were
- 39:24that was such a great level service.
- 39:26It's going to be the same with photos.
- 39:28I don't know what that is from a mental standpoint.
- 39:30Some of you that study the brain
- 39:31let me know what that theory is called because I'd love to know what that is.
- 39:37But the same
- 39:37happens and then you even set your photographer up to fail.
- 39:41Because if you're giving that really high level customer service
- 39:45and they're not and their photos aren't so great,
- 39:47that's when you start to get into the nitty gritty of painfulness.
- 39:50Because now you're like, Oh, why do I even try to hire a photographer?
- 39:54But that's not the case.
- 39:55You should hire photographers, right?
- 39:59And so part of covering them and investing in them
- 40:02that there's a business of profitability to that,
- 40:07of taking the time to teach that photographer
- 40:11everything that you know, and thinking through all aspects of it
- 40:14from the technical part to the customer service part,
- 40:17you know, they might just quote unquote just be a photographer.
- 40:21They might not have a hybrid role
- 40:22of a business development specialist, but train them as one anyway
- 40:26because that's going to that's going to impact the experience that the realtor
- 40:30has with that photographer and therefore the perception of your company.
- 40:34And it makes them feel a part of that and a very good part of that business.
- 40:39If you're giving them business skills, you're taking the time to invest in them.
- 40:44They're not just expendable, expendable commodity, right?
- 40:47We talk to realtors about photography being a commodity.
- 40:51You know, it's
- 40:53they want the best pictures of the cheapest price
- 40:54and that that's all they think about.
- 40:57But if you show your value as not just a photographer, you're not just a commodity.
- 41:02The relationship goes deeper.
- 41:03It's the same thing with your with your contractors.
- 41:05Don't view them just as photographers view them is a vital part of your company
- 41:11in helping you grow and value them as people. So
- 41:17am I getting to the point of this?
- 41:20yeah,
- 41:21it hurts when you lose photographers on your team.
- 41:25It just does.
- 41:27Yeah, some.
- 41:27And we're hiring six
- 41:29and one of them is transitioning on to a different career and that's great.
- 41:31We know that 2 to 5 years is kind of the limit
- 41:36for photographers unless they move up, and that's not conclusive.
- 41:41But on average
- 41:43and this individual happened to be going
- 41:44he was going to school, it's the next step for him.
- 41:46So we're happy.
- 41:47There's just a whole there.
- 41:48But it's going to take time, money.
- 41:52We're going to have unhappy clients because of it.
- 41:54We're going to have to train.
- 41:55So there is a cost.
- 41:56So if you're doing this, do it correctly.
- 41:58Invest the time to build a relationship with your photographer.
- 42:03Educate them on this, even what to say.
- 42:05Don't assume that
- 42:08those words that Craig used there
- 42:10Giving compliments
- 42:11about the agent to the homeowner is very smart.
- 42:14But I'll tell you what, to
- 42:16A 20 something year old or maybe even to an introverted individual, that's like,
- 42:21you want me to say that again? That goes back to feelings.
- 42:23I got my feelings clock here.
- 42:24It's difficult to say feelings out loud.
- 42:27Just do that with your team.
- 42:29Write those things down.
- 42:31If you know something about an agent, put it in their Spiro
- 42:34notes on their agent record.
- 42:36If you have that in your head, be generous.
- 42:38Put that information to your team members, type it in,
- 42:42go to the agent, put it on photographer notes.
- 42:45Then when your photographer's
- 42:46at the house of that agent,
- 42:47they'll click the red button and they'll view your brain dump about the agent.
- 42:51Then that photographer can walk in and talk from a perspective
- 42:57that seems like they're just picking right up where you left off.
- 43:01You know, what kind of customer service that is that
- 43:05it feels like to that agent be like, Well, wait a minute,
- 43:07how did this person like the communication?
- 43:09Like Craig took time to talk, tell this other photographer
- 43:13about what I like and what's important to me.
- 43:16Like I think that's just a simple thing that you can type in those notes.
- 43:19Craig is not something that we can do on a consistent basis.
- 43:22We have notes in there, but taking that information and sharing that
- 43:27I think can be huge.
- 43:28And again, it just ties back to the idea of what you focus on
- 43:31will expand and focusing on your biggest asset
- 43:34being the photographers and taking time to ask them questions.
- 43:38Don't assume you know everything.
- 43:40You might have shot ten times more houses than they have,
- 43:43but they're doing it today.
- 43:44Right now, as a photographer of your company, don't assume you know everything.
- 43:49Ask them for their information.
- 43:51I think you will find so much value in it and at the same time,
- 43:55they will feel good that you ask and they will feel good for helping out.
- 44:01Can I share one thing that kind of impacted me
- 44:04in a in a really good way that that Wow has done.
- 44:06And this isn't too to
- 44:08kiss up to Todd or anything like that because Todd didn't even
- 44:11ask me about this,
- 44:13but something small like, okay, so Todd, you had you had a photographer
- 44:16come in just this week and talk about how cold it was in their fingers.
- 44:20I remember just a couple of months ago, it was kind of a similar cold snap.
- 44:25And in the mail I got a card from the office just thanking me
- 44:29for the work that I do out in the field and a gift card to Starbucks,
- 44:33you know, hey, you know, grab yourself a warm drink as you're headed out.
- 44:37Very small thing.
- 44:38I think it was a $5 maybe maybe a $10 gift card.
- 44:41So not a huge investment.
- 44:43But just the thought that my office was thinking about me out in the field
- 44:47knowing that it was cold out, man, you know, it just gave me a really good
- 44:52feeling.
- 44:53as part of the team of they're thinking about me.
- 44:56Think you have to be intentional with your realtors. Yes.
- 44:59With, you know, make marking down the notes,
- 45:01but do that for your photographers as well.
- 45:03The impact will be huge.
- 45:05It builds great culture.
- 45:07It shows that the company cares about the human being.
- 45:10This is, again, covering our assets, our assets for for lack of
- 45:15we don't want it to be a cold business term
- 45:17because these are human beings
- 45:18that you're working with that are helping you build your business.
- 45:22But the buy in that you'll get from your team when you just do
- 45:25take the time to be intentional in caring for the human beings on your team.
- 45:30Massive.
- 45:31an easy thing to do and that is I'm so happy
- 45:34that the team did that and, and that really comes from,
- 45:38you know, setting those expectations at a company
- 45:43level of core values.
- 45:46And, you know, I didn't even know that happened.
- 45:48Craig That was exciting to hear happened. You know, that's fabulous.
- 45:50Kudos to Jess and the team and maybe Brittany wrote they wrote the the card.
- 45:56But getting that feedback is so important and allowing people and a word
- 46:00we use all the time.
- 46:01And again, this is a business term, but we try to empower our employees.
- 46:06You know, we let. Jess knows what's important.
- 46:08Let Brittany know that photographer hours are important to us.
- 46:11We empowered her to be able to something as simple as write a card and give a
- 46:15I think it was probably $5.
- 46:17Craig, I think is probably what it is.
- 46:19The amount doesn't matter.
- 46:20It really does.
- 46:21And this is an Austin Cheviron thing
- 46:23he's a realtor at an adjacent market does and he does coaching.
- 46:27He really just does coaching now but that's your reticular activator
- 46:31in your brain.
- 46:31That's what it's called our remember that brain function,
- 46:33your reticular activator is what is triggered when you open that card
- 46:38and you and you get that gift card.
- 46:40It's just that thing that makes you feel warm.
- 46:43And this goes back to what we
- 46:45kind of opened the episode with, Todd. Time management.
- 46:48As an owner, I would encourage you take the time
- 46:51and I did this for my clients back when I had my own business,
- 46:54take the time to write out thank you cards for your team,
- 46:58manage your time and start to scroll through the videos or,
- 47:02you know, whatever else it is, block out a block of time
- 47:06to invest in your team, get creative, start brainstorming some.
- 47:09How can I show this person I care about them and I'm telling you it,
- 47:13it will build huge dividends for your business, but also just
- 47:17the relationships you're able to build with your team.
- 47:20And that just makes for a very healthy, nontoxic workplace.
- 47:24y'all, if you're listening and you're still with us.
- 47:27Thank you.
- 47:28Hey, there's probably a million ideas that we didn't cover.
- 47:31Can you share them?
- 47:32Can you be generous with what you're doing with your team or ideas?
- 47:35share them in the comments below, email them to us.
- 47:37This isn't just a ploy to get comments on this video.
- 47:40We just care that we serve you.
- 47:41So if we can get comments going down there
- 47:45to help us all would be great.
- 47:47What ideas do you do?
- 47:48Do you have a cool little thing that you've stumbled upon or you've
- 47:51you've nurtured and it's really great for your team?
- 47:54Let us know what it is generally, I want to know.
- 47:56I want to collect this feedback because I want to do it for our team
- 47:58and I want the whole community to understand how to build these teams.
- 48:01So share that with us below that thing that you do
- 48:05that has just makes your team feel like you care.
- 48:08And let's see if we can get a nice list on below and build this community.
- 48:12I just have to comment real time, real quick.
- 48:15You mentioned we're not asking for comments to build a huge following or anything
- 48:20quite that.
- 48:21I get emails from social media influencers and strategists on.
- 48:26Hey, we've noticed you only have such and such number of,
- 48:29you know, subscribers or whatever
- 48:31on your channel and we could help you grow, blah, blah blah.
- 48:34Yeah, and these ways of getting people,
- 48:37you know, we do ask for you to give us a like sometimes to share.
- 48:40But half the time I forget to ask that.
- 48:42Todd because that's not the important part.
- 48:44We just, we want to build an authentic community
- 48:47and yes, share ideas on how to build strong businesses.
- 48:51So I will because I'm remembering I will ask if you found value in this,
- 48:55give it a like share it with share it with others that you've,
- 48:59you know, other colleagues and friends in the business.
- 49:01If you found value in it.
- 49:02And if you're just just now starting to listen, we would love for you to subscribe
- 49:06just so you get the notifications on when new episodes drop.
- 49:10So there's there's the social media ask.
- 49:14Yeah, but that's ultimately not why we're doing it.
- 49:17It's not.
- 49:17We could probably be tuned up at so many levels.
- 49:19We're probably doing everything by the book wrong to grow the channel.
- 49:22But you know, it's a cool community.
- 49:25It's great to hear from a lot of you and we like this tight knit community and
- 49:30this is just like we've said before.
- 49:31Craig and I are both are so appreciative that some of you that like
- 49:36more than one of you would tune in and a lot of you tune in weekly.
- 49:39So, you know, just thank you for that blessing that you've given to us.
- 49:45Absolutely. All right.
- 49:47Well, Todd, thanks for all you shared this week and
- 49:50and you as well, Craig.
- 49:51Thanks for that feedback about, you know, because you're doing it every day.
- 49:55Yeah. Yeah.
- 49:56Well, I love what I do.
- 49:57And I've bragged to our clients what, you know, what a great culture we have.
- 50:02And I love what I do.
- 50:03And when you
- 50:04when you love what you do, it shows and people pick up on that positivity.
- 50:08So that's another benefit to really investing in your people is if,
- 50:12if they love what they do because they've got a great culture
- 50:15that they're working in, in your business that's going to, that's going to show
- 50:18to the clients that they're working with or prospects.
- 50:22There's there's just so many good things.
- 50:24So anyway okay that how about we wrap up, Todd. Does that work?
- 50:28Sounds good. That is great. That’s a great week.
- 50:30All right, guys.
- 50:31Thank so much. Again, we hope you found value in this.
- 50:34And like Todd said, share some ideas of how do you invest in your team.
- 50:37What are some things that you found have really elicited a really good response
- 50:41from your team that they show you that they appreciate what you've done for them?
- 50:44We'd love to hear those ideas.
- 50:46If you're watching on YouTube, leave a comment below.
