- 7:30I want to see if the doc thinks it's okay for it to bring
- 7:31Vickers down. I like to have Famous definitely identify him as the guy who
- 7:34shot him. We've got three good witnesses. An identification for Bemis will clinch

- 10:46Uh wait a minute, huh cigarettes out all right, Ben, light it,
- 10:52Yeah, I see you guys. Thanks. He's prossing the streets,
- 11:01fire over his head, blocked the drop Ficker, Joe, he's running for
- 11:03that car. I didn't pull it. Picker calling up. He stopped.
- 11:09Come on, Joe, right, come on, get back. Wait,
- 11:11let us throw here, let us throw so. I call a doctor Joe,
- 11:15No, he wouldn't be interested. The guy's dead. James Vickers murder
- 11:22suspect address unknown died almost instantly at one thirteen pm November sixteenth, while attempting
- 11:28to escape. His body was taken to the County Morgue, where it was
- 11:31posted. All the personal effects found on the body were listed by the corner
- 11:35had a receipt for them given to our office. At eight thirty five the
- 11:39next morning, Ben and I met with Chief detectives at Backstrand. Those four
- 11:43guns they found in the car Vickers was driving, they're all US Army property.
- 11:46Where were they stolen from? Okaver? I don't know. Each one
- 11:48of the guns is stamped US army. That's all that makes it easy the
- 11:52corner. Never find anything on the body. Nothing to tell us why Vickers
- 11:56decided to kill a traffic coo. What did be Mis say before he died?
- 12:00He was on traffic due yesterday morning down at East Broadway in the first
- 12:03ten thirty five of a great coup pulled up for a stop sign. Vickers
- 12:07was driving. Beamus started over to tell him to back up out of the
- 12:09pedestrian zone. Vickers pulled a gun and shot him. How'd they catch Vickers
- 12:13chased him three miles before he powered into a lumber truck. The guy with
- 12:16him got away fine, checked or and I no maker warrants on Vickers kickbacks
- 12:22not in on his fingerprint? All right, what's your guess? Friday?
- 12:24I don't have one. Ed Vickers could have been hopped up. Doug Stanley
- 12:28over Georgia Street said no he checking. Wait a minute, Banks, Randy
- 12:33hold on for you, Friday say thanks, Friday talking yeah, yeah,
- 12:39good, be right over Lee. We're in business. Ed Crime Lab just
- 12:41found Vickers address That is Joe. Thanks Lee, Let's see you now.
- 12:52Silver Dollar Hotel received a mister James Vickers six dollars and fifty cents, Room
- 12:58three forty five. Where'd you find it? Out of the front seat?
- 13:01Didn't with the tools anything else? Not a thing? How about prints too
- 13:03kind of smudged. Hope we can run a make with him. No prints
- 13:07on a four gunsy smeared, not enough to classify. Yeah, this is
- 13:11it, Ben, It's all we got. Come on, let's see if
- 13:13we can make it payoff. We located the Silver Dollar Hotel on East Grand
- 13:22between sixteenth Street and Pico. Was an old type frame building with a brightly
- 13:26colored neon sign jutting out over the sidewalk just above the dark entrance. The
- 13:30manager's name was Luther Gage. We showed him a picture of James Vickers.
- 13:35He definitely identified him as one of his former tenants. He told us that
- 13:37Vickers had stayed at the hotel one week in room three forty five, and
- 13:41that he had checked out two days ago. Was Vickerstein here alone, miss
- 13:46Gay? Yes? Alone? Quiet man? Did he have any visitors?
- 13:50Maybe, wouldn't know, paid his bills, spend most of his time away
- 13:54from the hotel, good tenant. Did Vickers have any friends here in the
- 13:56hotel? Maybe on the room next to mister Victors he still lives here.
- 14:01Two of them used to be kind of thick. Can we look at that
- 14:05room Vickers stayed in, mister Gage, let's see, yes, it's still
- 14:09vacant, all right. This way. This man Vickers was friendly with what's
- 14:16his name, gay Night, Raymond Knight, room three four three. It's
- 14:22in his room now. No, went out about eight this morning. Here's
- 14:26the elevator. How well would you say Knight and Vicers knew each other?
- 14:33Couldn't say good tenants. Both of them pay their bills, they go out
- 14:37together. Seem to know each other well, wouldn't No, I don't pry,
- 14:41but this case involves murder, mister Gage. We told you that we'd
- 14:43appreciate your cooperation. Cooperation, don't pay the RAMT sergeant, third floor.
- 14:52This way here three four five, open it up? Nothing. Yeah,
- 15:03oh, here looks pretty clean. Jo, All my rooms are clean.
- 15:09He didn't mean it that way, mister Gage. I wonder if you'd chow
- 15:13us Night's room now, that's next door in the hmm. I don't know
- 15:20about this poking into other people's rooms. Not regular. Neither's murder. Come
- 15:26on, let's go. Does mister Knight have this room to himself. Sure,
- 15:28ask questions, don't you No, Knight has a friend staying with him
- 15:31about two weeks now, not in much see in No, I don't think
- 15:35so, boy, Ben, watch it drop at you? That shot?
- 15:41Mister Kate for got cak it up, Ben, He's out cold. Look
- 16:06what you've done to the room. I thought you said Knight wasn't in.
- 16:10He isn't. This is his friend, great friends. Forty five automatic in
- 16:15his hand, thirty eight snub nose in the bureau, another forty five look
- 16:18in his bag. I don't pry. He pays his bills, good tenant?
- 16:22Yeah? Can I get outside on his phone? Mm? Yes,
- 16:26all outside calls are ten cents. Yeah. Here, have to keep the
- 16:32book straight. Sure you do. Who's going to pay for the dammage?
- 16:34Ask mister Knight's friend here? Well, say, why worry? He pays
- 16:38his bills. Good tenant. I called ed Backstrand and he set out a
- 16:45special detail to stake out the hotel and bring in Raymond Knight. If and
- 16:48when he returned, Ben and I drove to the Georgia Street Receiving Hospital,
- 16:52where Doc Stanley patched up the cut on Ben's scalp and treated Raymond Knight's friend
- 16:56for simple cuts and bruises from paper was found in his wallet and in the
- 17:00hotel room. He was identified as Frank Gannon ninety eight ninety six Wassat Street,
- 17:06Kansas City, Missouri. When we got the headquarters, we had Gannon
- 17:10taken to the interrogation room, where we questioned him briefly. He told us
- 17:12that he was a self employed watch salesman, that he was in the city
- 17:17on a business trip. He admitted friendship with Knight, but not with Vickers.
- 17:22We booked him at the Cotty Jail for assault with intent to commit murder.
- 17:26The three guns found in the hotel room were turned over the crime lab.
- 17:29We reported back to the office. Joe and I head pounding like my
- 17:33Gannon's a mean yeah, it's a nasty crack. I got some assprin in
- 17:37my desk. Nighthaps all right, boys, rough days. I don't get
- 17:45much rough or any message toy on the desk. I'm gonna eat starting right,
- 17:49Trason, What is jo Jones got to make on those prints he lifted
- 17:53off the car. Let's see, yeah, something else and now and James
- 17:57Baker wanted ten fourteen forty three desertion US Army. That could account for those
- 18:03stolen army guns. Yeah, what about the make on those Prince Lee found.
- 18:07Let's take a look, Vance Taylor a good solid record. Four burderies,
- 18:11two armed robberies, two assaults. Here's the mama sheet, morn so
- 18:18and so THEE thirty six I alias John Field's herold Grant, Tom Bissel jip
- 18:23Hey. Yeah, alias Raymond Knight, the other man who rode in the
- 18:30car with James Vickers the morning he shot down traffic officer Beamus finally had been
- 18:34identified Vance Taylor alias Raymond Knight. Well, that still didn't explain the unprovoked
- 18:40murder. He didn't explain the four guns found in the car or the three
- 18:44guns found in the hotel room. An assortment of arms like that could mean
- 18:48something big, but we didn't know what. Gannon's sudden willingness to shoot it
- 18:52out in the hotel room meant something too. We didn't know what we had.
- 18:56Gannon brought back the interrogation room, Higanon, have a see everything,
- 19:06all right? I'll bet you're worried. No, we're not worried, Ganon,
- 19:08you want to be. Don't make me laugh. You're tied in with
- 19:11Raymond Knight. That's enough for us. You send me up for it.
- 19:15We're gonna try big talk. How long did you know Vickers? I didn't,
- 19:19funny. He's prints were all over one of those guns we found in
- 19:22your room. I'm not worrying. Then you better start Gannon vicars a Knight
- 19:26kill the man if you run with him. Your hands are dirty too.
- 19:29Our room with Night, that's all. Night didn't come back the hotel worries.
- 19:33We're not that close to share your guns and your friends. That's close
- 19:36enough for us. I don't know Vicars. You mean you didn't know it?
- 19:40I said, I don't know. We got Vicars, Gannon, he's
- 19:41dead. Good story, Okay, come on, Agannon. Let's been out
- 19:45on the morning this way. Joe cold, isn't that? Yeah? It's
- 20:00damn ye? What is all this? Never seen the corpse before? No,
- 20:07I'm not in this. Take me back. I don't want to look.
- 20:08You're gonna close your eye, take me back. I don't want to
- 20:11look. Hear me. I fellas say twenty five this way again, and
- 20:17I get sick. I don't want to look. Throw back the sheet,
- 20:18Fred, huh, take a numb look again. No, he's Night's friend.
- 20:23I'm not in it. Who is in it? I don't know it?
- 20:27Take me out. I'm sick, all right, friend? Thanks okay,
- 20:30Budds interrogation room Friday, Joe on steak out at the Silver Daughter Hotel.
- 20:45I was signing a Raymond Night. Keep you posting, okay, Dave?
- 20:48Thanks? How long does this go on? I can call a lawyer,
- 20:51you know, and you better call one right away again. And they
- 20:52just picked up Night at the hotel. He's incriminated you. You're a liar.
- 20:56Sure like we worry about victory. We'll prove it you again. The
- 21:00officers are on their way in now. They're gonna put Night in the next
- 21:02room. You can listen to them. Well, I came here to sell
- 21:03watches. I ain't in this jan and you and Vickers a night. We're
- 21:06planning a job, a big one. We know that if you want a
- 21:07way to get on the witness stand to tell your story, it's all right
- 21:11with us. We didn't take too long to break this smoke. Gil.
- 21:15Yeah, thanks, yan H. What are you gonna do nothing? Just
- 21:23kill a little time? They bring in Knight. You haven't got Night.
- 21:29I haven't un wrapped him yet, Joe, you wanna check me out?
- 21:32Okay, open them up, give him a good shuffle. Huh, you're
- 21:41gonna have some time on your hands again. Want to learn a new card
- 21:44game? Nah, suit yourself. It's a good game for two better with
- 21:48three a lot of coins. Yeah, we got two decks there the first
- 21:56off. This game is quite a bit like Jen Rummy. Yeah, there
- 21:59are eight of every suit four jokers. Jokers count fifty points, Red threes
- 22:04kind one hundred points each. If you get a black three, you can
- 22:07freeze the deck. Oh, I see, I shouldn't say deck. In
- 22:11this game, they call it the pack pack. What's a pack? Well,
- 22:15it's the discard pile, same as in Gin. You get a red
- 22:17three, you can freeze. No, it's a black three. Well,
- 22:19what happened when you freeze? Nobody can pick it up? Oh? I
- 22:22see? All right, let's steal a lot of dummy hand here. Fine
- 22:30Gamegan, I'm sure you won't change your mind. You don't want to play
- 22:33though, All right? Now I'm two handed. You do a lot fifteen
- 22:37cards? See how many? Can play? As many as six? I
- 22:41think I've only played up to four. You play partners with four. Yeah,
- 22:44that's right. Okay, count your cards. I think it's fifteen.
- 22:49There's fifteen right now. Now what I do? Well, I guess you
- 22:55better let your hand open. That'll be the easiest way to show you.
- 22:56Okay, I'll spread them all out over there. Well, you don't have
- 23:02a great hand there. You've got a couple of black threes. You can
- 23:04use those. Yeah, it's fine. They kind of hundred a peg.
- 23:07No, no, no, those are red threes. Black threes don't count
- 23:10anything. Oh, red three, that's right. Do you remember what black
- 23:12threes are for? You can use them to freeze the pile. Pack.
- 23:17That's right, the pack. Well, you know what I mean? All
- 23:19right? Now, look you see I got a joker here. Jokers are
- 23:22wild. Do you remember how much they count? And they're wild? One
- 23:25hundred points? Now, red threes are worth a hunter jokers count fifty.
- 23:27You don't explain it very good. I don't understand. How simple can it
- 23:30be? Again, it's not even playing. You get it, don't you
- 23:33get him? Okay, Red three's kind of hunter. Jokers count fifty.
- 23:37Black threes you can fire, you can freeze the pack. Yeah good,
- 23:41now hold on of that with you now, Black threes freeze the pack.
- 23:44But that's not the only card that can do it. No, no deuces
- 23:48can do the same thing. But you see, the only difference is if
- 23:49you use a deuce, which is also wild, you have to have a
- 23:52natural pair in order to pick up the pack. Now with a black three,
- 23:56it's I knew it good until I knew it wouldn't work well. South
- 24:00A right from the start, packers killed the cop. I'm not I'm taking
- 24:03old wraps Johnny thistenographer, right fast, all right, Kennon, too late,
- 24:11you haven't got time. Twenty after one they're gonna do it. What
- 24:15payroll Brazier company messenger leaves one twenty? He's got the payroll thirty grand.
- 24:19They're gonna get him. Where does the messenger leave one twenty? You're too
- 24:22late, I'm not in Where does he leave? One leaves the bank?
- 24:26I think no, maybe the company. Where's the company? Third and Spring.
- 24:30They're gonna get him. Where's the bank? The messenger goes to up
- 24:33the block second National, third and Hill. Where they're gonna get the messenger
- 24:37for the alley Clay Street. I'm not in it, and check it.
- 24:38Get out of communications. Haven't put out a call to block off the area.
- 24:41Give him the details, Johnny, stay with this guy, Okay,

- 29:03The story you have just heard is true, only the names were changed
- 29:10to protect the innocent. Frank Gannon, the only surviving member of the hold
- 29:15up gang, was tried and convicted of the crime of assault with intent to
- 29:18commit murder. He is now serving out his sentence at the State Penitentiary.
- 29:29You have just heard the sixteenth in a new series of authentic cases from official
- 29:32files. Technical advice for Dragnet comes from the Office of Acting Chief of Police
- 29:37W. A. Wharton, Los Angeles Police Department. Tonight's program is dedicated
- 29:41to Private Richard H. Taylor of the Washington D C. Police Department,
- 29:47who, on the evening of December thirteenth, nineteen forty six, gave his
- 29:51life so that yours might be more secure. Dragnet came to you from Los
- 30:07Angeles. Phil Harris likes a great deal about the South. We like a
- 30:18great deal about Phil Harris. For instance, we like his beautiful blonde wife,
- 30:22Alice Fay. In fact, we like the Phil Harris Alice Fay Show.
- 30:26And it just happens that it returns to the NBC air tomorrow. Why
- 30:29don't you take our advice and listen to one of the funniest shows around anywhere.
- 30:33That's The Phil Harris Alice Fay Show tomorrow on most of these same NBC
- 30:37stations. You're tune for the Stars on end Welcome back. You know.
- 31:12I've been discovering the joy of second listenings, and this episode is a great
- 31:19case in point. I had not thought of this episode in so many years,
- 31:26but listening to again, I'm struck by just how good it was.
- 31:30You had, first of all, kind of a different reaction by Friday,
- 31:40a lot more emotional than we'd see him, particularly in the original nineteen fifties
- 31:47radio series, and it was just really well done, because usually Friday is
- 31:52very much in control and not at all emotional, but here you definitely see
- 32:04a different side here. I think the first six minutes in particular, just
- 32:09does a great job. The whole thing portrays his real anger at this seemingly
- 32:17senseless act, and I also love the climax. I thought that it was
- 32:25very exciting and extremely extremely entertaining the way that they wrapped it up. So
- 32:34overall, this was just a wonderfully solid case and it's so nice to rediscover
- 32:40these stories once again. Six years after the initial listening on too listener comments
- 32:45and feedback now and I have this off of Twitter. Carl says, just
- 32:52got into Dragnet after a long binge on Johnny Dollar. Really enjoying it.
- 32:58Thanks Adam, well, thanks so much, Carl. I do want to
- 33:01let you know that coming up this weekend we have on Sunday another Sherlock Holmes
- 33:08film, The Triumph of Sherlock Holmes starring Arthur Wantner, which is probably my
- 33:15favorite of the Wantner films, and it's definitely entertaining with a story based on
- 33:21the Valley of Fear, so I do encourage you to check that out.
- 33:25We will be back on the audio on Monday with the Saint and then join
- 33:30us back here next Saturday for another episode of Dragnet. In the meantime,
