Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Hey, welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:17Today we are in a one week hiatus from our study through
- 0:21Isaiah, a little bit of a busier week for me.
- 0:25And so today we are going to be in Revelation chapter 21 verses
- 0:29one through 7. We've been looking at some of my
- 0:32favorite portions of Scripture. And so we looked at Romans 81
- 0:36and two. We looked at Philippians chapter
- 0:382 verses 5 through 11. And then today we are looking at
- 0:43the very end of the biblical story, the fulfillment of
- 0:46everything that Scripture was about.
- 0:50And we read this. I, I want to mention this as
- 0:53well. Revelation is the final exam for
- 0:59those that have gone through and learned the lessons from the law
- 1:05and the prophets. That is the Old Testament,
- 1:07especially the major and minor prophets there, as well as what
- 1:12we learned through the life and ministry and story of the Lord
- 1:17Jesus Christ. And so sometimes if you are
- 1:21scared of Revelation, I promise you it's just because you need
- 1:26more time in the rest of Scripture because those give you
- 1:30all of the tools that then you can bring it to revelation.
- 1:34I've been highlighting some of that even as we've gone through
- 1:36Isaiah, Lord willing, in the future as but we go through like
- 1:42Ezekiel or Jeremiah, if the Lord tarries, we will see more and
- 1:48more of those at play. And so I'm looking forward to
- 1:51that. But here is the wonderful joy,
- 1:55the fulfilment, the consummation of creation is what we read
- 2:00here. Then I saw a new heaven and a
- 2:04new earth for the 1st heaven and the first earth had passed away
- 2:08and the sea was no more. All right, what's going on?
- 2:13Remember, back in the beginning God created what the heavens and
- 2:17the earth. And so here the there's a new
- 2:21heavens and new earth, new skies and the land, the heavens, the
- 2:26place where the spiritual beings are, the earth, the land where
- 2:31the physical beings are. And that is made new.
- 2:36What was tainted and destroyed by sin is reworked.
- 2:41It is redone. And when it says here the sea
- 2:44was no more, I've highlighted many times in Psalms.
- 2:48We've even seen it a few times in Isaiah.
- 2:50You'll see it more in Isaiah in a couple of weeks.
- 2:53The sea was viewed as like the chaos waters that were always
- 2:59trying to destroy everything on the land.
- 3:02The flood is kind of one picture of this that really stuck around
- 3:07in the memories of the peoples in the ancient Near East, that
- 3:14there was the recognition that what the sea does, especially if
- 3:19it has free rain, it's going to destroy everything.
- 3:23And so here what's being stated is not necessarily that there
- 3:26will be no more oceans or no more Mediterranean Sea.
- 3:32It is saying the thought of chaos, destruction, the end of
- 3:38life that is gone. You are safe.
- 3:43There is no there is nothing more to fear, if you will, from
- 3:48the natural world or even from the evil side of the spiritual
- 3:55world. There is nothing more to fear.
- 3:58Now, I want to be very clear. I believe that that is the
- 4:01picture that's painted all throughout Scripture.
- 4:04I would encourage you look up the Bible Project, both video on
- 4:09the Chaos Dragon as well as the podcast series that they did
- 4:14walking through that picture all through the Old and New
- 4:18Testament. It could be, and I want to give
- 4:23the caveat here, this could be taken very literally and there
- 4:26is no more see. I don't know why there would be
- 4:30no more see, but I want to give that as an option from from a
- 4:35very literal reading of the passage.
- 4:37So what was stained with sin is gone now something new and
- 4:43better has come. Verse #2 I also saw the holy
- 4:47city, the new Jerusalem that we talked about in Isaiah 2, coming
- 4:51down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned
- 4:57for her husband. So if you will, yes, right now
- 5:01Jesus is preparing a place for us, but the place is not
- 5:05permanently in heaven. The goal was never for us to
- 5:09abandon planet earth. The goal is for heaven to come
- 5:13to planet earth. And so here, the new Jerusalem,
- 5:16God's perfect city, coming down like a bride adorned for her
- 5:20husband. Verse #3 Then I heard a loud
- 5:24voice from the throne. Look, God's dwelling is with
- 5:29humanity, and he will live with them.
- 5:34Emmanuel, God with us, they will be his peoples, and God himself
- 5:40will be with them and will be their God.
- 5:44What a joy God's desire is not just that we would live with
- 5:48him, but that he would live with us.
- 5:52And what a joy for that day when we can walk or run or teleport.
- 5:59I don't know what will be entailed on that day, but to go
- 6:04see the crucified and risen Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, sitting on
- 6:13his throne, that all of the Saints from all of the ages will
- 6:19be there. And as Jesus sits there, he's
- 6:23not sitting in judgement. He is sitting enjoy to be with
- 6:28us. We will be his peoples.
- 6:30He is our leader, our our guide, the one that we worship.
- 6:36He is the one that provides for the need of all and He will be
- 6:43our God. That one that, that one that we
- 6:45can trust, that one that we can rely on and pray to.
- 6:50And he will physically be there. And I can't imagine the, the
- 6:54beauty, the majesty, the glory of that day, the overwhelming
- 6:58joy, even thinking about it now as I regularly pray for people
- 7:04who experienced the greatest hardships of life and to think
- 7:08of that day when we will be happy.
- 7:12Verse #4 There he will wipe away every tear from their eyes.
- 7:17Death will be no more grief, crying and pain will be no more
- 7:22because the previous things have passed away that there will be.
- 7:29And again, this is very poetic language, so it could be saying
- 7:33metaphorically there's no more grief, crying or pain that the
- 7:41old way of interacting with the world where we're in danger, we
- 7:46experience heartbreak like those types of things do not rule or
- 7:51destroy us anymore. How that new life works with
- 7:58Jesus on the throne on earth, I don't know all of the details.
- 8:03This could be very literal to say there will never again come
- 8:07a moment where we breakdown in tears.
- 8:11We'll never again stub our toe or puncture our skin.
- 8:18It could very well be that there is no knowing the precise nature
- 8:24of even as you consider the Old Testament and then it's
- 8:28fulfillment in Christ and, and the different prophecies and
- 8:31things, those that were anticipating the Messiah, they
- 8:36missed it the first time because they assumed some things about
- 8:42Scripture that weren't true. And so I always want to be
- 8:45careful to, if you will give some weight and give some
- 8:49options to some different things to say, hey, this could be
- 8:52speaking poetically or this could be very literal, but I
- 8:56want to give both of those options there.
- 8:59The important part is that God himself is our comfort, our
- 9:04protection, our joy. He is wiping away the tears from
- 9:09our eyes. I think I mentioned this a few
- 9:12man maybe months ago now at I don't even know what it would
- 9:16have been. Maybe a Sunday school class or
- 9:18something. I love, you know, if you're
- 9:22watching this, listening to this, I love you.
- 9:25Unless you're Samantha, I don't know that I'm wiping away the
- 9:29tears from any of you all's eyes.
- 9:30I'll be like, hey, you, you got that covered.
- 9:33But I have wiped away the tears from Samantha's eyes, from Brian
- 9:39and Evelyn's eyes. Like there's a level of
- 9:42familiarity, of fatherly, loving care that extends from me to
- 9:48them that I would do that. What a joy that this God, this
- 9:52one who is reigning, this one that brings a heavenly city down
- 9:56to earth, that we would live there.
- 10:00He wipes away the tears from our eyes that there is personal
- 10:06involved care from God to you. You will not just be one person
- 10:12among, you know 10 billion or one person among 30 billion.
- 10:17You will be personally cared for and loved by God on that day.
- 10:23What a joy that all of us want to be seen and known and loved
- 10:30and to know that God cares about me and on the day where He is
- 10:34glorified and He is King over all the earth, that He will wipe
- 10:40away my tears is such a comfort. Like I tell you guys, but my
- 10:50heart is just overflowing. What a day that will be when my
- 10:55Jesus, I shall see him, and I look upon his face, the one who
- 10:59saved me by his grace, when he takes me by the hand and leads
- 11:03me to the promised land. What a day, glorious day that
- 11:08will be. Verse #5 Then the one seated on
- 11:14the throne said, look, I am making everything new.
- 11:20He also said, right, because these words are faithful and
- 11:24true. So John is taken in by this
- 11:26wonderful scene that is taking place.
- 11:28God says I am making all things new.
- 11:31So the earth and heaven that were tainted by sin, God makes
- 11:37new Jerusalem that was tainted by so much sin and even the
- 11:42death of the Messiah. Jerusalem is made new US people
- 11:49that were broken by sin. God made us new.
- 11:52We are a new creation in Christ Jesus.
- 11:55And so God is making all things new and then he goes, hey, John,
- 11:58like write this down because this is all trustworthy.
- 12:01This is faithful and true. I think actually, so I, you guys
- 12:05know this. I use the Christian standard
- 12:08Bible, but they're like tagline for their translation is
- 12:13faithful and true and it's taken from this particular verse of
- 12:17Scripture. He says in verse number six.
- 12:21Then he said to me, it is done to tell the study it is
- 12:25finished, it's completed. What God did was enough, it was
- 12:31sufficient, it was overflowing and it is it is inevitable.
- 12:40It's not that Jesus might reign or that you might be saved.
- 12:44It is that the work has been accomplished and all that awaits
- 12:49us is the day when, if you will, the switch goes from old to new.
- 12:56He says I am the alpha and the Omega, that's the beginning and
- 13:00end letters of the Greek alphabet.
- 13:03He says I am the beginning of everything and I am the end of
- 13:07everything. He says the beginning and the
- 13:10end. I will freely give to the
- 13:13thirsty from the spring of the water of life.
- 13:18We read about that in Isaiah and we read that this is what the
- 13:22Lord will do. This descendant from the line of
- 13:25David will give the people this living water.
- 13:28There is the thirsty receive this water of life.
- 13:34If you desire life in Christ, you can receive it.
- 13:37You don't have to earn it. You don't have to pay for it.
- 13:40It is the free gift of God to every person that would say I
- 13:43want that life. I want to know God to be loved
- 13:47by God, to be a part of his people.
- 13:49God will give that to you. Verse #7 The one who conquers
- 13:53will inherit these things, and I will be his God, and he will be
- 13:58my Son. And you might ask, OK, well, how
- 14:01do I, how do I conquer? What does it mean to conquer
- 14:05from this book? Well, we read that even at the
- 14:07end of chapter 12, it says this, that they overcame him.
- 14:19Verse #11 They conquered him. All right, So we want to
- 14:22conquer. What does it mean?
- 14:23They conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of
- 14:27their testimony, for they did not love their lives to the
- 14:31point of death. So stand firm in your faith.
- 14:35Continue to declare Jesus His word his way and through the
- 14:40blood of Jesus and our profession of faith, our
- 14:43confession of faith in Christ and what He has done, that we
- 14:47have owned, if you will, that blood for ourselves, that we
- 14:51have claimed Christ's lordship and salvation over our lives,
- 14:57those are the people that conquer.
- 14:59You don't conquer through being holier than everyone else.
- 15:01You don't conquer through being the biggest giver or the most
- 15:05faithful servant. You conquer through what Jesus
- 15:08has done and by the word of your testimony.
- 15:12If we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord, believe in
- 15:15our hearts that God has raised him from the dead, we will be
- 15:18saved. What a joy.
- 15:19He will be our God and we will be His son or daughter.
- 15:24Thanks for tuning into this episode.
- 15:27These passages of scripture just give me such joy and life,
- 15:31prompt me to worship, and I hope that it does the same for you.
