- 2:27Speaker 5: Here are you?
- 2:27Speaker 3: I am doing fine, Thank you for being here, Thanks
- 2:30Speaker 3: for having us. All right, so what you got going
- 2:32Speaker 3: on here? Big announcement, Oh big announcement. Night ready, betast
- 2:36Speaker 3: of All twenty twenty six.
- 2:37Speaker 6: We've set the dates. It's going to start on May
- 2:40Speaker 6: twenty second, and we're going to go for ten full
- 2:42Speaker 6: days of programming running from May twenty second to May
- 2:45Speaker 6: thirty first.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Now, this is going to be your first one as
- 2:48Speaker 3: the director, because you came on when it was already
- 2:51Speaker 3: I guess you know, yeah, it was already planned.
- 2:55Speaker 7: At that point.
- 2:55Speaker 6: I started in August, so my first official event was
- 2:58Speaker 6: our fall event Fest Fall in October. So this will
- 3:02Speaker 6: be my first actual festival, and we had a little
- 3:05Speaker 6: bit of an abbreviated I say we, I wasn't on
- 3:07Speaker 6: board yet. We had an abbreviated festival in twenty twenty
- 3:10Speaker 6: five is one weekend.
- 3:11Speaker 3: But this this year we're back back to the full day.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Back to the full day and give us the dates again.
- 3:16Speaker 6: May twenty second through the thirty first.
- 3:18Speaker 3: And on the morning like today, you know, and we're
- 3:21Speaker 3: not even officially.
- 3:22Speaker 6: I'm already living in the spring. Were already all I'm thinking.
- 3:25Speaker 3: We haven't even officially entered winter. We're in what's known
- 3:27Speaker 3: as meteorological winter, right, but winter doesn't officially start until
- 3:32Speaker 3: sometime later in the month. But you're already thinking about it.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Doesn't affect me at all.
- 3:36Speaker 6: All I'm thinking about is May.
- 3:37Speaker 3: All right, So what have you been up to so far?
- 3:40Speaker 3: I mean, I know, with the planning and everything, because
- 3:42Speaker 3: now I think the woman to talk to you before
- 3:43Speaker 3: you were just kind of getting your feet wet a
- 3:45Speaker 3: little bit. Now now that your feet are soaked, what
- 3:47Speaker 3: are we doing now?
- 3:48Speaker 6: Well, one other thing we launched today and if you
- 3:50Speaker 6: want to check it out on festival Charleston dot com.
- 3:53Speaker 6: We launched an application if people have ideas for events
- 3:57Speaker 6: or art installations, anything like that, they'd like to say
- 4:00Speaker 6: see in fest of All twenty twenty six. There's an
- 4:02Speaker 6: application on the website you can fill out. Our organization's
- 4:05Speaker 6: got twenty two years of experience putting on stuff in Charleston,
- 4:08Speaker 6: and if somebody's got a great idea and they just
- 4:10Speaker 6: wonder how to get it off the ground, we can
- 4:13Speaker 6: provide some support for them and help them make it
- 4:16Speaker 6: a reality. And we'd love you know, somebody's got a
- 4:18Speaker 6: great idea, we'd love to include it infest.
- 4:20Speaker 3: And that's what I love about this, And I love
- 4:24Speaker 3: the fact that when we have these events in Charleston
- 4:26Speaker 3: that people are willing to listen to the public. So
- 4:29Speaker 3: now's the time if you've got an idea, yep, you
- 4:31Speaker 3: know for fest of All, don't take it to social
- 4:34Speaker 3: media and say why don't they do this or why
- 4:37Speaker 3: don't they Don't get me started on that, boys, but
- 4:41Speaker 3: you're asking for people.
- 4:42Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, there are so many creative people in
- 4:44Speaker 6: our community. I'm sure somebody's got some great ideas for
- 4:48Speaker 6: some you know, whether it's theater or dance, music, visual art,
- 4:52Speaker 6: anything like that. We'd love to hear your ideas and
- 4:54Speaker 6: we'd love to help you bring it to life. And
- 4:56Speaker 6: where can people festival Charleston dot com.
- 4:59Speaker 3: All right about Christmas, I mean we just got over thanksgivving.
- 5:01Speaker 3: You're all excited about that.
- 5:02Speaker 6: I was trying to get my shopping done.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Well yeah, I mean, if you're at least thinking about
- 5:07Speaker 3: that's more than what most guys have done at this point.
- 5:10Speaker 6: I think I'm buying most of my gifts from the
- 5:12Speaker 6: TikTok shop this year.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Shop local. I know, shop he's Kidding's kiddy, I'm kitdty
- 5:20Speaker 3: he's kidding.
- 5:21Speaker 8: Uh.
- 5:21Speaker 3: You going to Taylor Books after we get there, go
- 5:24Speaker 3: to Taylor Books, go to Capitol Market. Yeah, that's right.
- 5:27Speaker 6: I mean, all the all the old Daily Mail colleague
- 5:30Speaker 6: Chuck McGill just took over over there.
- 5:32Speaker 3: He was on the show last week. I heard it.
- 5:34Speaker 7: It was great.
- 5:34Speaker 3: He was on the show. Well, half of it was good.
- 5:36Speaker 3: His part was good. So so I'm glad that all
- 5:38Speaker 3: you folks from the newspaper business are finding gameful employees
- 5:43Speaker 3: taking over. That's it. You got Michaelhanny here and of
- 5:46Speaker 3: course and you guys. So that's good. Amelia, it was
- 5:50Speaker 3: Amelia and I think maybe she interned there years.
- 5:53Speaker 6: Okay, that was for my time.
- 5:54Speaker 3: As says, he's a lot younger than we are, but
- 5:56Speaker 3: I think because she was a part of it as well. Hey,
- 5:58Speaker 3: you're feel free to hang out here with me one second.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Since I double booked you guys, we got Sean Hill
- 6:03Speaker 3: from KRT here. Sean, Welcome to the show Man. How
- 6:07Speaker 3: you knowing Sarah? Thanks for having me you guys. Actually,
- 6:09Speaker 3: of course it's Charleston. Everybody. Everybody talks about Charles and
- 6:11Speaker 3: being such a big town, everybody in this town knows everybody.
- 6:14Speaker 3: So when I end invertently and I will go ahead
- 6:17Speaker 3: and telling myself now, I don't care. It was just
- 6:18Speaker 3: one of those things. I walked downstairs and Zach was
- 6:21Speaker 3: set there and I was like, uh, please tell me
- 6:24Speaker 3: you're not here to see me. And that's always the
- 6:27Speaker 3: bright way to start a conversation first thing. Please tell
- 6:30Speaker 3: me you're not here to see me. Normally I just
- 6:31Speaker 3: say that to you know, police officers or something, but
- 6:35Speaker 3: I said it to him this time. And we had
- 6:37Speaker 3: a little mix up on the schedule. I'd forgot I
- 6:39Speaker 3: had scheduled him for today. But you're a good sport
- 6:41Speaker 3: about it. He was too, and so have him hang
- 6:44Speaker 3: out here for a minute. But I want to have
- 6:45Speaker 3: you on Sean Hill from KRT because big announcement was made.
- 6:48Speaker 3: You guys got some money coming in.
- 6:50Speaker 9: We did, and also to make you look even better, Dave.
- 6:53Speaker 9: Last month and Halloween, Zach and I worked together with
- 6:56Speaker 9: the Charleston City Department of Art to unveil the newest
- 6:59Speaker 9: art bus. So you've seen it around. It has some
- 7:01Speaker 9: cryptid creatures on there. So Kart enjoys working with the
- 7:04Speaker 9: festival on zachcdoon great partners, looking forward to what he does.
- 7:07Speaker 3: But this was my great plan and all that figure out.
- 7:10Speaker 7: That was just a happy little accident. Yes, that's exactly
- 7:13Speaker 7: all that one. All right, No, you're exactly right, Dave.
- 7:16Speaker 9: We're very thrilled that last week we were awarded a
- 7:20Speaker 9: twenty one point twenty five million dollar grant to really
- 7:25Speaker 9: reconstruct a maintenance facility at KRT. It's one of those
- 7:29Speaker 9: things that you don't think about a lot, and it's
- 7:31Speaker 9: it's not as exciting to our passengers, but for us
- 7:33Speaker 9: who realize how important it is to keep these vehicles.
- 7:37Speaker 7: Running every single day.
- 7:38Speaker 9: Having an operations team is important and having the best
- 7:42Speaker 9: schedules is important, but keeping those buses running is the heartbeat.
- 7:46Speaker 3: If you don't have a bus out on the road
- 7:47Speaker 3: doesn't make any difference.
- 7:48Speaker 9: It doesn't matter if I have the best looking schedule
- 7:50Speaker 9: on the planet if I can't get a bus that
- 7:52Speaker 9: a driver can drive.
- 7:54Speaker 3: And that facility that you've been using had had a
- 7:56Speaker 3: little age on it, right, it did.
- 7:58Speaker 9: Yes, it's about eighty five years. That's like Ron Hughes age.
- 8:02Speaker 9: It's Ron hughes Ish. I think he was there at
- 8:04Speaker 9: the groundbreaking maybe, but uh, you know, there were some
- 8:07Speaker 9: challenges with that facility. Just the heights of the ceilings,
- 8:10Speaker 9: et cetera. Created a scenario where it was really hard
- 8:13Speaker 9: to adapt to new even new technologies, new fuels, et cetera.
- 8:18Speaker 9: And also just safety is are number one thing. So
- 8:21Speaker 9: it was kind of like having a used car that
- 8:22Speaker 9: you were continuously, you know, every time you had to
- 8:24Speaker 9: change the oil or put new tires on it, you
- 8:27Speaker 9: kind of you get you don't want to do it.
- 8:29Speaker 9: So we've been putting band aids on this building for
- 8:31Speaker 9: years and this is the third time. We're at fourth
- 8:35Speaker 9: in Stockton, and that's where the building will be. What
- 8:37Speaker 9: we're planning to do is essentially flip our parking lot
- 8:41Speaker 9: with our existing maintenance facility. So for a portion of
- 8:44Speaker 9: time we'll be constructing a new facility on our parking lot,
- 8:47Speaker 9: and then the next step will be to demo that
- 8:49Speaker 9: existing maintenance facility and turn it into a parking lot.
- 8:51Speaker 9: So we're just going to do a big flip. We're
- 8:52Speaker 9: going to stay in our neighborhood. We love being on
- 8:54Speaker 9: the West side of Charleston, and the communities embraced this change,
- 8:58Speaker 9: and it's going to be a big deal for our
- 8:59Speaker 9: pass because that means our buses are going to stay
- 9:02Speaker 9: on the road more often, less downtime. And again, I
- 9:06Speaker 9: want to make sure I think that our federal partners,
- 9:08Speaker 9: Senator Capito, Justice, congress Woman Miller, even Senator former Senator Mansion.
- 9:13Speaker 9: You know, we started as three years ago and they
- 9:14Speaker 9: helped with a congressionally directed spending award for us. So
- 9:18Speaker 9: this has been a long time coming, but we didn't
- 9:20Speaker 9: give up and we were excited about it.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Sounds good again. We're talking with Sean Hill from KRT
- 9:24Speaker 3: to Dave Island Show and five eighty Live is brought
- 9:26Speaker 3: to you aparted by Bridge Valley Community and Technical College,
- 9:28Speaker 3: insurance agents are in demand of the state and all
- 9:30Speaker 3: across the country. Bridge Valley can help you take that
- 9:32Speaker 3: first step their insurance pre sales Licenser course. We'll prepare
- 9:35Speaker 3: you to send for the state required Property and Casualty
- 9:37Speaker 3: Insurance Licenser Exam to start your career in this ever
- 9:39Speaker 3: growing field. Checkout Bridge Valley dot edu for details Bridge
- 9:43Speaker 3: Valley Community Technical College. Your career starts here. All right,
- 9:45Speaker 3: So last time we had you on, we were you
- 9:47Speaker 3: come on every now and need to talk about some
- 9:49Speaker 3: upgrades and some different things going on. How's everything going,
- 9:52Speaker 3: what's new?
- 9:53Speaker 7: Yeah, so it's going really well.
- 9:54Speaker 9: Last time we were on here, we talked about adding
- 9:56Speaker 9: three new care T plus zones. Those are the on
- 9:59Speaker 9: demand zones that visuals can get on their phone or
- 10:01Speaker 9: they can call onto our office and schedule a ride.
- 10:03Speaker 7: Those have been successful so far.
- 10:05Speaker 9: The two routes that were replaced entirely by the k
- 10:08Speaker 9: r T plus on demand project have have been successful
- 10:12Speaker 9: so far. We haven't had there was that concern of it.
- 10:16Speaker 9: We want to make sure they overlap for a while
- 10:17Speaker 9: so passengers can get used to it. So when those
- 10:20Speaker 9: the fixed route buses stopped coming, it's not a huge impact,
- 10:23Speaker 9: and I'm really happy and proud of my team for
- 10:25Speaker 9: putting in the work to educate those passengers to make
- 10:28Speaker 9: that as seamless as possible. And so far, knock on Wood,
- 10:31Speaker 9: we've we've we've accomplished that. So I'm really proud of that.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Do you see an uptick in ridership during the holiday season,
- 10:38Speaker 3: We do it.
- 10:39Speaker 7: It's kind of weather dependent. On days like today, sometimes.
- 10:42Speaker 9: People are less likely to get out, but we do
- 10:44Speaker 9: see definitely our routes that go up to South Ridge
- 10:48Speaker 9: and some of the shopping centers we see an increase.
- 10:51Speaker 7: But again, it just depends on the weather.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Also, do you see people that maybe on a day
- 10:58Speaker 3: that we have inclement weather that may choose if they
- 11:00Speaker 3: have to go to work to you know, say yeah,
- 11:02Speaker 3: I'm not gonna, I'm not I'm not gonna risk this,
- 11:04Speaker 3: I'm gonna I'm gonna take the bus.
- 11:05Speaker 7: We do actually so this day.
- 11:07Speaker 9: That's why we were very cognizant of the fact that
- 11:09Speaker 9: when it's the weather is harsh to make sure we've
- 11:11Speaker 9: got our street supervisors out and making sure that's.
- 11:13Speaker 7: Safe for us.
- 11:14Speaker 9: The good thing is a bus performs pretty well on snow,
- 11:17Speaker 9: you know, there's not a vehicle on the planet that
- 11:19Speaker 9: does on ice but snow.
- 11:24Speaker 3: Well, okay, I think he accidentally turned your microphone.
- 11:26Speaker 7: Off I did. Yeah, that's my fault, that's what I
- 11:29Speaker 7: was saying.
- 11:30Speaker 3: I thought it. Say that again, say what I.
- 11:32Speaker 7: Was Yes, that my fault there.
- 11:34Speaker 9: What I was saying was our vehicles perform extremely well
- 11:36Speaker 9: and snow, but not so great on ice. And so
- 11:39Speaker 9: again that's like any vehicle. So on days that are
- 11:41Speaker 9: rough weather, if you don't want to worry about taking
- 11:43Speaker 9: the risk of taking your car out, hop on a
- 11:45Speaker 9: k r T.
- 11:45Speaker 7: We'll get you there. We'll get you there safely.
- 11:47Speaker 3: What kind of decisions now again, and you know what
- 11:50Speaker 3: we saw today is basically I mean here, I don't
- 11:52Speaker 3: know what it is where our listeners are, but downtown
- 11:54Speaker 3: Charleston we got a little bit of snow there. It's
- 11:55Speaker 3: almost nothing. It was raining when I came in. It's
- 11:57Speaker 3: one of the moost nothing here. Other areas though, are seen,
- 12:00Speaker 3: you know a little bit more. Boy goes into the decision.
- 12:02Speaker 3: So when we do eventually get into winter and we
- 12:05Speaker 3: have these bad situation, one goes into the decision not
- 12:07Speaker 3: to run buses exactly.
- 12:08Speaker 9: So we have street supervisors who go out, They start
- 12:11Speaker 9: at two or three in the morning, dependent on the
- 12:13Speaker 9: actual route they and they do exactly that. They drive
- 12:16Speaker 9: the routes, they check them, they see and every one
- 12:19Speaker 9: of our street supervisors is a former operator, so they've
- 12:22Speaker 9: driven the routes themselves, so they're familiar with what a
- 12:25Speaker 9: bus is and isn't capable of. And then we relay
- 12:28Speaker 9: that back to dispatch and we make the call of hey,
- 12:29Speaker 9: should we wait a little bit, should we maybe open
- 12:32Speaker 9: up this route a little bit later than normal and
- 12:34Speaker 9: give the highways a chance to clear up the roads.
- 12:36Speaker 3: Basically like public schools.
- 12:38Speaker 9: Exactly for the most part, exactly, yeah, with less pressure
- 12:41Speaker 9: because we don't have the kids to get on school
- 12:42Speaker 9: at time. But we do appreciate the responsibility of getting
- 12:46Speaker 9: people to work on time. That's a huge, huge priority
- 12:48Speaker 9: for us, so we take it very seriously. But we
- 12:51Speaker 9: want to make sure we're not putting anyone in an
- 12:53Speaker 9: unsafe position. But thankfully, again knock on wood, the last
- 12:56Speaker 9: several years, we've had great success with weighing that when
- 13:00Speaker 9: should we stop and when should we not?
- 13:01Speaker 3: In a texture says, is the bus request available for
- 13:03Speaker 3: people who work nights and don't get off till after midnight.
- 13:06Speaker 9: Right now, are on demand service runs from six am
- 13:09Speaker 9: to six pm, so that's a little bit tougher. We're
- 13:11Speaker 9: looking at expanding that service as it grows and as
- 13:14Speaker 9: we see more people will adopt it. Right now, that
- 13:18Speaker 9: won't be helpful for them. I hope in the future
- 13:20Speaker 9: I can come on the show and say we get.
- 13:22Speaker 3: That we get more riders on it than executed services
- 13:25Speaker 3: exact services. Go back to the maintenance facility again, what's
- 13:28Speaker 3: our timetable on that? Repeat that four seconds?
- 13:30Speaker 7: So our timetable for that. We just received the grant.
- 13:32Speaker 9: We are at thirty percent design, so we need to
- 13:34Speaker 9: get to one hundred before we can build anything. That's
- 13:35Speaker 9: probably going to take the majority of twenty twenty six
- 13:38Speaker 9: that we'll be working with our architecture and engineering firm
- 13:40Speaker 9: making sure we have our plans solidified, and then construction
- 13:43Speaker 9: can start, hopefully late twenty twenty six.
- 13:46Speaker 3: All right, Okay, I have another quote. You're a popular guy.
- 13:49Speaker 3: What happens to old buses that can no longer be used?
- 13:52Speaker 3: Could you repurpose them to help out the animal shelter.
- 13:55Speaker 7: Yeah, so we've had.
- 13:56Speaker 9: A couple of creative uses of our former buses. Neil
- 14:00Speaker 9: at the United Way is converting one of our former
- 14:02Speaker 9: smaller vans into a mobile grocery store for for up
- 14:05Speaker 9: in Clay County. We have donated a small bus to
- 14:09Speaker 9: the South Charleston r OTC. We also we put some
- 14:12Speaker 9: of our vehicles just on GOV deals. It's if you
- 14:14Speaker 9: purchase anything with federal funds, that's the way you if
- 14:17Speaker 9: you're going to sell it, and we make pennies on
- 14:19Speaker 9: the dollar. But but yeah, we are open to ideas.
- 14:23Speaker 9: If people have something creative they want to do, we're
- 14:26Speaker 9: open to working with them, especially if it gives back.

- 14:31Speaker 9: We get a lot of requests, but if it's just
- 14:32Speaker 9: a drive around or turn into an r V or something,
- 14:34Speaker 9: you know, we're not as into that.
- 14:36Speaker 3: Yeah, but something will help out a community and that's
- 14:37Speaker 3: something maybe you could look at for the future. I'm
- 14:39Speaker 3: sure that hoolks with animal shelter would love to have
- 14:41Speaker 3: that conversation with you. It's also dogs. Yeah, yes, I'm

- 18:21Speaker 3: we'll be crowning some state football champions Class Quade Friday

- 18:33Speaker 3: o'clock in the game with lots of local interest here
- 18:35Speaker 3: in the Kanawh Valley Class Triple A, it is Nitro
- 18:39Speaker 3: and Princeton. Tim Brady with Charleston CVB. He's been a
- 18:43Speaker 3: busy guy and he joins us right now. Welcome to show, Tim,
- 18:46Speaker 3: Thanks for having me, Dave, always a pleasure to be here.
- 18:47Speaker 3: Thank you. There's you and I are talking off air
- 18:50Speaker 3: man there's a lot of big happenings in and around
- 18:52Speaker 3: the championships, and we'll we'll get to that a little
- 18:55Speaker 3: bit later on. But the thing I want people to
- 18:57Speaker 3: remember is that when a city hosts championships, whether it
- 19:01Speaker 3: was here, Wheeleen, where it was before, or wherever, there's
- 19:04Speaker 3: a lot more than just the game that goes on.
- 19:06Speaker 3: You see upticks in restaurants and hotels and things of
- 19:10Speaker 3: that nature. So let's get to that first.
- 19:12Speaker 12: Yeah, I think that, and that's sort of the idea behind,
- 19:17Speaker 12: you know, making the pitch to host these big events,
- 19:19Speaker 12: because it does drive business throughout the city in places
- 19:22Speaker 12: other than just you know, Ladley Field. For the example
- 19:25Speaker 12: of the state high school football championships. I was telling
- 19:28Speaker 12: you before we got on the air last year, the afternoon,
- 19:31Speaker 12: the Saturday afternoon of the Triple A game Bridgeport versus
- 19:35Speaker 12: Herbert Hoover last year was that night was the highest
- 19:39Speaker 12: night of attendance at light the night at Gomart Ballpark.
- 19:42Speaker 12: It was also the busiest day of the holiday season
- 19:45Speaker 12: at Capitol Market last year, and anecdotally we saw a
- 19:50Speaker 12: lot of Bridgeport and Hoover gear at those locations. So
- 19:54Speaker 12: that tells you that people are coming into town for
- 19:55Speaker 12: the football game. But you know, like that Saturday noon game,
- 19:58Speaker 12: it's over by three. You've got the rest of the
- 20:01Speaker 12: day to explore Charleston. And it's such a vibrant place.
- 20:04Speaker 12: During the holidays, there's so much happening with Gomart Ballpark,
- 20:07Speaker 12: the light the night at Gomart Ballpark, and holiday happenings
- 20:10Speaker 12: at Capitol Market and Holly Jolly Brawley in the all
- 20:13Speaker 12: the lights and trees in Slack Plaza and through Bradley Walkway,
- 20:16Speaker 12: and you know, the city is just such a festive place.
- 20:20Speaker 3: So hosting these.
- 20:21Speaker 12: Events brings people in that you know, they have the
- 20:23Speaker 12: time to go and do those things.
- 20:24Speaker 3: And if you look at I mean, I said this
- 20:26Speaker 3: on the show yesterday, I think it's a good cross
- 20:28Speaker 3: section of West Virginia. You know, we're happy to have
- 20:30Speaker 3: Nitro in there, but let's face it, we don't want
- 20:33Speaker 3: as well. On one hand, as locals, we'd like to
- 20:36Speaker 3: have all local teams and there. That's just not going
- 20:37Speaker 3: to happen. You know, we'd like to have as many
- 20:39Speaker 3: as possible, but you've got people coming from Princeton, from Bluefield,
- 20:42Speaker 3: from Frankfurt, from all those other wheeling those other places
- 20:45Speaker 3: that I mentioned.
- 20:45Speaker 12: Yeah, and it's it's actually a balance this year that's
- 20:47Speaker 12: kind of nice and it doesn't put too much stress
- 20:50Speaker 12: on our hotel community because don't forget, we're also hosting
- 20:54Speaker 12: a pretty big Division one basketball game. Yeah, there's that
- 20:57Speaker 12: Saturday night, and I think they're busting at the seams
- 21:00Speaker 12: at the Charleston Marriott Town Center over the weekend. But
- 21:03Speaker 12: we have four teams that are staying in hotels, four
- 21:04Speaker 12: teams that are not, you know, so yeah, it's bringing
- 21:08Speaker 12: people from all over the state. But the thing about
- 21:10Speaker 12: those local teams, they drive a lot of ticket sales.
- 21:14Speaker 12: So we're happy to have Nitro, We're happy to have
- 21:16Speaker 12: Chapmanville balance.
- 21:18Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure. Yeah, it's a great balance. Yeah, I
- 21:19Speaker 3: want you want to have, like I said, a good
- 21:21Speaker 3: balance of all because you know you but you also
- 21:25Speaker 3: want people that are going because the statistics have proven,
- 21:28Speaker 3: and you're in the tourism business that we people come
- 21:30Speaker 3: to an area for an event, whether it's a concert
- 21:33Speaker 3: or whatever the case may be, and they see something
- 21:36Speaker 3: they like, they're likely to come back, even if they
- 21:39Speaker 3: don't take it in that time. Yep, you know, they
- 21:41Speaker 3: come in for a big event. Over the Connell Seem
- 21:42Speaker 3: Convention Center or something like the football championships. They come
- 21:45Speaker 3: in and they say, well, we didn't have time this time,
- 21:47Speaker 3: but man, that restaurant looked really good. You know a
- 21:49Speaker 3: lot of people were talking about that restaurant, They were
- 21:51Speaker 3: talking about that coffee shop, talking about this this retail
- 21:53Speaker 3: is that's right, We're going to come back.
- 21:54Speaker 12: Yeah, that's right. That return visitation percentage for us is
- 21:58Speaker 12: really high. We know, and you know, we do a
- 22:00Speaker 12: lot of tracking. As you said, I am in the
- 22:02Speaker 12: tourism business. Sometimes sometimes I run football games, sometimes I
- 22:07Speaker 12: run bike races. But generally speaking, you know, we track
- 22:11Speaker 12: a lot of data and we can tell if someone
- 22:13Speaker 12: comes here and they have a good experience, they come back.
- 22:15Speaker 12: I mean, we're we have a seventy plus percent return rate.
- 22:18Speaker 12: So you know, it's these events drive business, not just
- 22:22Speaker 12: this weekend, but I promise you that hosting these football
- 22:26Speaker 12: championships this weekend will drive business later in the holiday season,
- 22:29Speaker 12: or in the spring or in the summer. People will
- 22:31Speaker 12: come here, they'll have a good time, and they'll come back.
- 22:33Speaker 3: Talking to a game with Tam Brady from the Charleston

- 22:59Speaker 3: Yesterday I had chief of staff of a Good one administration,
- 23:01Speaker 3: Matt Sutton Studios. He was subbing for the mayor yesterday
- 23:04Speaker 3: and we talked a little bit about what Charleston learned
- 23:07Speaker 3: from one year to the next. It is a continual
- 23:11Speaker 3: learning process. Everything went off as far as I know,
- 23:13Speaker 3: without a hitch for your first year in a while
- 23:16Speaker 3: of hosting it. But what is some takeaways from year
- 23:18Speaker 3: one that you're going to take into year two.
- 23:19Speaker 12: Well, it's funny and I could answer that question on
- 23:21Speaker 12: a couple of different levels, but on a very micro level,
- 23:24Speaker 12: here's one thing we learned. You know, when the championships
- 23:26Speaker 12: were in Wheeling, the way the stadium is set up,
- 23:30Speaker 12: the locker rooms exit right out directly onto the field.
- 23:34Speaker 12: At Ladley Field the locker rooms. You entered the locker
- 23:36Speaker 12: rooms from behind the stands, so you actually have to
- 23:38Speaker 12: go through the public areas to get to and from
- 23:41Speaker 12: the field. So we learned a lot about making sure
- 23:44Speaker 12: we kept all of the right people on the field
- 23:47Speaker 12: and not letting people get out on the field like
- 23:48Speaker 12: walking out with you steal what I'm saying, Like people
- 23:51Speaker 12: would just sort of mingle in with the team and
- 23:53Speaker 12: the coaching staff and just sort of like forced gump
- 23:55Speaker 12: their way out onto the out on Texas.
- 23:57Speaker 3: Next thing, you know, you guys had seventy five years
- 23:59Speaker 3: old a tight end. Yeah, that's that's exactly right.
- 24:02Speaker 12: You know, somebody's grandma's got the clipboard down there in
- 24:04Speaker 12: the coach's box. So little things like that that we
- 24:07Speaker 12: didn't think about because you know, we hadn't had to
- 24:10Speaker 12: think about it. So, you know, we learned little things
- 24:12Speaker 12: like that. But on the big picture side, one of
- 24:14Speaker 12: the things that we learned is that the teams really
- 24:17Speaker 12: appreciate the hospitality that we extend to them. We have
- 24:21Speaker 12: there are eight gentlemen who serve as team hosts. Every
- 24:25Speaker 12: team when they come to Charleston has a person that
- 24:27Speaker 12: is their local host, that is their point of contact
- 24:30Speaker 12: for anything they need, you know, whether kid needs to
- 24:33Speaker 12: go to an emergency dentist, or somebody needs contact solution,
- 24:37Speaker 12: or you know, to and from the field, they're with them.
- 24:42Speaker 12: We want to extend that hospitality because we want them
- 24:44Speaker 12: to come here and not have to worry about anything
- 24:45Speaker 12: but playing football. We also provide a meal to every team,
- 24:48Speaker 12: and we work with local restaurants, locally owned restaurants to
- 24:51Speaker 12: provide those meals to every team. So every team when
- 24:54Speaker 12: they get to Charleston is going to come in on
- 24:56Speaker 12: their bus, go to a restaurant, and have a nice
- 24:59Speaker 12: sit down meet provided by us through a local restaurant.
- 25:03Speaker 12: So we learned a lot about that hospitality and how
- 25:05Speaker 12: important it is. We put all these plans together not
- 25:08Speaker 12: knowing how it would be received. The teams loved it,
- 25:11Speaker 12: and the teams appreciate the hospitality and they appreciate having
- 25:13Speaker 12: that one person that is their point of contact, so
- 25:16Speaker 12: the coaches don't have to worry about anything but coaching football.
- 25:18Speaker 3: I was gonna say, I think the coaches would probably
- 25:20Speaker 3: you know, appreciate as well, because at the end of
- 25:22Speaker 3: the day, I mean, let's remember, you are dealing with
- 25:24Speaker 3: fifteen through eighteen year old kids, yep, and things happen,
- 25:28Speaker 3: as you said, emergency dentistry and things of that nature.
- 25:30Speaker 3: And the coaches because they can just worry about the
- 25:32Speaker 3: ex as and o's.
- 25:33Speaker 12: And yeah, and they don't have to get on their
- 25:34Speaker 12: phone and google where's the closest emergency dentist. They just
- 25:37Speaker 12: call their team host, and the team host makes the arrangements,
- 25:40Speaker 12: takes care of it, and and it's all sort of
- 25:43Speaker 12: done without anyone's you know, having to.
- 25:46Speaker 3: Lose focus on the game. How are the hosts chosen?
- 25:48Speaker 3: I mean, do the people just volunteer?
- 25:50Speaker 12: Yeah, we put together a volunteer committee last year, and
- 25:53Speaker 12: you know, eight eight guys that have some prior experience
- 25:57Speaker 12: either coaching or playing football, so they thinkerstand would be
- 25:59Speaker 12: very import so they understand. And I would list them all,
- 26:02Speaker 12: but I know I'll forget somebody, so I don't want
- 26:04Speaker 12: to do that. But they're all former coaches or players
- 26:06Speaker 12: who who understand, and a lot of them have either
- 26:09Speaker 12: coached or played in state championship games, so they understand
- 26:11Speaker 12: the magnitude of the moment, and you know the focus
- 26:14Speaker 12: it takes to be in that arena, so they're happy
- 26:17Speaker 12: to help and provide that sort of level of service
- 26:20Speaker 12: to help their team. And you know, we found last
- 26:23Speaker 12: year that the team hosts they developed personal relationships with
- 26:26Speaker 12: the coaches and players and became invested in that. So
- 26:28Speaker 12: they became just like an extra fan for that team
- 26:31Speaker 12: on site. And it was really great experience and we
- 26:33Speaker 12: got a lot of really positive feedback about that program
- 26:35Speaker 12: that we put together. And I have to give a
- 26:37Speaker 12: lot of credit on that to Mike Garbagast, who chairs
- 26:40Speaker 12: our local host committee, former principal at South Charleston. Mike
- 26:45Speaker 12: has put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into
- 26:47Speaker 12: hosting this. I'm the guy that gets to sit here
- 26:49Speaker 12: and talk about it on the radio, But Mike Garbagast
- 26:52Speaker 12: does a lot of work on this, and he put
- 26:55Speaker 12: that committee together sort of hand picked, and he picked
- 26:59Speaker 12: just great guys. And and we have great tournament directors
- 27:02Speaker 12: uh In him and and Bryce Casto and Jim Hamrick.
- 27:06Speaker 12: You know, these guys, they love high school athletics, they
- 27:09Speaker 12: love the sport of football, and and they have we
- 27:13Speaker 12: have created a committee that you know, and I haven't
- 27:16Speaker 12: even mentioned the Thursday Night Academic Awards back to the Maria,
- 27:19Speaker 12: where we recognize not only athletic accomplishment, but academic accomplishment
- 27:24Speaker 12: from athletes all over the state. So the committee that
- 27:27Speaker 12: might put together, I think has done a really great
- 27:30Speaker 12: job of coalescing and creating this really great event for
- 27:33Speaker 12: the city of Charles.
- 27:34Speaker 3: Let's talk about that academic ceremony. I mean, can you
- 27:37Speaker 3: give us all the details on that. Yeah, So it's
- 27:39Speaker 3: high school and middle school. It's both individual and team awards.
- 27:43Speaker 3: It's selected by the S a C.
- 27:44Speaker 12: But it's it's based on you know, grade point average obviously,
- 27:48Speaker 12: but there's also a community uh involvement component to it.
- 27:52Speaker 12: And uh so in individual uh individual sports and team sports.
- 27:57Speaker 12: There are at the high school level eight scholarship winners.
- 28:00Speaker 12: We fund a small scholarship where the individual award winners
- 28:05Speaker 12: will receive from the Charleston CVB a scholarship uh to
- 28:10Speaker 12: you know, for them to use in their their postgraduate
- 28:12Speaker 12: post high school education. Yeah, it's and it's it's it's
- 28:17Speaker 12: what high school athletics should be about. You know, certainly
- 28:20Speaker 12: everybody buys the tickets for the games, and everybody wants
- 28:22Speaker 12: to see the kids compete on the field, but these
- 28:24Speaker 12: kids are excelling in the classroom too, So we want
- 28:26Speaker 12: to make sure that we recognize that and and honor
- 28:29Speaker 12: them and and encourage them to continue achieving at that
- 28:33Speaker 12: high level.
- 28:34Speaker 3: Talking again with Tim Brady from the Charleston cv B
- 28:36Speaker 3: to Dave Allen Show on five eighty line brought to
- 28:38Speaker 3: you part by Morgan to Morgan. If you're interured, hire
- 28:40Speaker 3: Morgan to Morgan, America's largest injury law firm. And what
- 28:43Speaker 3: did the city get out of this last year? I mean,
- 28:45Speaker 3: let's talk let's talk numbers here. Yeah, So I'm gonna
- 28:49Speaker 3: answer that question two ways. One, I'm gonna say the
- 28:51Speaker 3: city invested in this to begin with, and and none
- 28:55Speaker 3: of this happens without the full support of Mayor Goodwin
- 28:58Speaker 3: and her staff and the City Department's Charleston Police are
- 29:02Speaker 3: also a huge, huge asset and a huge help in
- 29:04Speaker 3: producing these events. So the city invests in this event,
- 29:08Speaker 3: and then what the city gets back.
- 29:09Speaker 12: You know, last year we estimated around a four million
- 29:11Speaker 12: dollar economic impact over the course of the three days
- 29:14Speaker 12: counting the Thursday of the Academic Awards banquet through the
- 29:18Speaker 12: end of the game, so the city invests, but then
- 29:20Speaker 12: the city does see that benefit. And I talked, you know,
- 29:22Speaker 12: anecdotally about the biggest day of light the night was
- 29:26Speaker 12: the Saturday of the Football Championships, and we can draw
- 29:29Speaker 12: some correlation there. We saw people out and about at
- 29:31Speaker 12: Capital Market and downtown and other parts of the city.
- 29:35Speaker 12: You know, we saw fans in gear and different restaurants,
- 29:37Speaker 12: Like we have eyes on the street. We might be
- 29:39Speaker 12: working at the football field producing the games, but we
- 29:42Speaker 12: have people out and about that see fans in their
- 29:46Speaker 12: team gear all all over the city. So you know,
- 29:48Speaker 12: the economic benefit to the city is great. We talked
- 29:50Speaker 12: about the return visitation, so it's really just an opportunity,
- 29:54Speaker 12: you know, not only for us to reap that economic
- 29:56Speaker 12: impact the weekend of the event, but then setting us
- 29:59Speaker 12: up in the future for turn visitation and just continuing
- 30:02Speaker 12: to organically grow travel and tourism in the Charleston area
- 30:06Speaker 12: by producing these events and bringing people to town and
- 30:08Speaker 12: showcasing this really vibrant city that we all love.
- 30:11Speaker 3: And we hope that the players that come from the
- 30:15Speaker 3: far away places, the blue fields of Princeton's, in the Wheelings, whatever,
- 30:18Speaker 3: we hope that they will get an opportunity to take
- 30:20Speaker 3: advantage of light the night and the tree one hundred
- 30:23Speaker 3: and sixty four trees downtown and the other restaurants and
- 30:27Speaker 3: so on and so forth. While they're here. We had
- 30:29Speaker 3: actually had a text that said, would be cool for
- 30:32Speaker 3: the city to collaborate with a few of these different
- 30:34Speaker 3: escape rooms in the valley to create some holiday themed
- 30:36Speaker 3: escape rooms and different locations around town. I know it's
- 30:39Speaker 3: not something necessarily that you would be in charge of,
- 30:41Speaker 3: but it is kind of a cool idea.
- 30:42Speaker 12: Yeah, sure is. And there's a bunch of those things
- 30:44Speaker 12: and they're super popular. They're not for me because I'm
- 30:46Speaker 12: not that smart, but I'd still be there.
- 30:50Speaker 3: I went in. Does anybody seem Brady has been gone
- 30:52Speaker 3: for three days?
- 30:53Speaker 12: He went to the escape room and he's not smart
- 30:54Speaker 12: enough to get himself out.
- 30:55Speaker 3: So good idea, though, that's a good idea. And we
- 30:59Speaker 3: have the champion for how long?
- 31:01Speaker 12: It's four years, so we're in year two of four years.
- 31:04Speaker 3: Anything that fans and we'll talk about this wee get
- 31:06Speaker 3: a little bit closer, But is there anything as far
- 31:09Speaker 3: as you know that fans need to know before they
- 31:10Speaker 3: go to the game about different policies or is that
- 31:12Speaker 3: something that you take care of or yeah, I mean
- 31:14Speaker 3: lately Field certainly has their facility policies. They're pretty standard
- 31:18Speaker 3: for most stadiums have the same policies. I would say
- 31:23Speaker 3: the number one thing that I would encourage people to
- 31:25Speaker 3: do if they're coming to the game is get on
- 31:28Speaker 3: the s SC website through go Fan and buy your
- 31:31Speaker 3: tickets and have them on your phone in advance. You
- 31:33Speaker 3: can buy tickets at the gate digitally, but it is
- 31:37Speaker 3: so much easier and more efficient if you buy your
- 31:40Speaker 3: tickets in advance and then we can just scan you
- 31:42Speaker 3: and get you right in and you don't have to wait.
- 31:44Speaker 3: So I would highly encourage people to buy their tickets
- 31:47Speaker 3: before arriving. And the other thing I will say is
- 31:50Speaker 3: I would prepare for some wet weather this weekend at
- 31:54Speaker 3: Laidley Field. Yeah. Well, I mean we are in meteorological winter.
- 31:58Speaker 3: As they say, it's my new favorite word, my new
- 32:00Speaker 3: favorite term. It starts in December first. But I mean,
- 32:04Speaker 3: and and we saw this morning. If you go talk
- 32:06Speaker 3: to to Fred and Chris and these guys that have
- 32:09Speaker 3: worked these tournaments of these not tournaments really, but these
- 32:11Speaker 3: championships over the years, and wheeling they saw everything in
- 32:14Speaker 3: Wheeling from I mean snowstorms to sleep to to you know,
- 32:17Speaker 3: hot conditioned. They've seen it all.
- 32:19Speaker 7: I was.
- 32:19Speaker 12: I was the red hat for many years for the
- 32:22Speaker 12: Super six in Wheeling, and I was on the field
- 32:25Speaker 12: for snow and rain and mud prior to the turf.
- 32:28Speaker 12: When the field flooded, it was it was a mud pit.
- 32:32Speaker 7: You know.
- 32:32Speaker 12: Yeah, this first week of December, you you can get
- 32:36Speaker 12: just about any kind of weather.
- 32:37Speaker 3: And looking ahead right now, the high temperature now and
- 32:40Speaker 3: this is always subject to change. High temperature on Friday,
- 32:43Speaker 3: it's gonna be about forty one overnight.
- 32:46Speaker 2: You know.
- 32:46Speaker 3: The late games probably be in the thirties. Forties would
- 32:48Speaker 3: be the max. I think the high tempts. But that's
- 32:50Speaker 3: it's the football championship weather. It's well, that's right, that's right.
- 32:53Speaker 12: And don't listen to anything Fred says, because he's always
- 32:56Speaker 12: nice and woman the press boxes. He's not out there
- 32:58Speaker 12: with the he's not out there with the the rabble.
- 33:00Speaker 3: He told me, he told me one time. He said, man,
- 33:03Speaker 3: he said it was so bad. It was so bad
- 33:05Speaker 3: on those kids out there. I had to pull down
- 33:07Speaker 3: the shades in the press fox. But I didn't have
- 33:10Speaker 3: to look at him again.
- 33:11Speaker 12: He had to turn his foot warmer down because he
- 33:13Speaker 12: was getting too hot.
- 33:15Speaker 3: All right, another another text, Okay, for you ever thought
- 33:19Speaker 3: about turning Ladleyfield Parking lot into a parking garage? That's again,
- 33:23Speaker 3: that's really not something that you're well that in your purview.
- 33:25Speaker 12: Certainly that facility is owned by the Kenaw County Board
- 33:28Speaker 12: of Education, so that would be a question for doctor
- 33:31Speaker 12: Paula Potter. Okay, imagine, go ahead and answer it now. Anyway,
- 33:35Speaker 12: I've never thought about it. I've never thought about it.
- 33:37Speaker 3: This is this is this is how we have fun
- 33:39Speaker 3: because you just go, yeah, sure, let's do it. It's
- 33:42Speaker 3: not my money, it's not my property. I think it's
- 33:43Speaker 3: a great idea, Tim Brady. This is why we're not
- 33:46Speaker 3: allowed to play together much. I appreciate you being here, man, man,
- 33:48Speaker 3: thank you. It's twenty minutes away from ten. We're gonna
- 33:50Speaker 3: go to Glendon and then talk to Mayor k Summers
- 33:53Speaker 3: when we come back on the Voice of Charleston WCCHS.

- 44:53Speaker 3: they asked. It they wanted to know if you could
- 44:55Speaker 3: consider upgrading all the city street. Markers, uh even if
- 44:58Speaker 3: you have to do a few at a, time because
- 44:59Speaker 3: the they say that they they're sure that they're not.
- 45:01Speaker 8: Cheap let me tell. YOU i will tell. You we

- 45:36Speaker 3: that the best way to do?
- 45:37Speaker 8: It that? Numbers that number is three or, four, five, four,
