- 0:05Lori Condon, welcome back our number 2 Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:09network. Trenton, Ken with you until 2.
- 0:13Just before that, we'll turn things over the drive at the
- 0:15drive off the bench. At that time, the boys will be
- 0:18at the IV in Urbandale from 2:00 until 5:00.
- 0:22Alabama Bob's going to join us momentarily.
- 0:24Talk about some of the games this weekend.
- 0:26Big weekend for the Big 12, Six games, crossover games against
- 0:31P4 opponents. How will they do?
- 0:33We'll get into that and preview what are the weaker slates, to
- 0:38say the least. You know what you you and Cam
- 0:40Bama's whining about it to It's football.
- 0:42I know we wait months and months and months and.
- 0:45Here, it's time for this and all.
- 0:47You would and you're whining and you're complaining of what a
- 0:50terrible knock it off. You know what it is?
- 0:52I think it's just the, I mean, maybe not next week, but going
- 0:56forward there'll be just there's too many good games.
- 0:59Why can't they spread some of these games off?
- 1:01Why can't they put some in Week 2 when it's so dismal?
- 1:04Anyways? Hi Bama, How are you?
- 1:07I'm good. I I have to give you a lot of
- 1:09credit, despite what Trent says, you know, some weeks that we
- 1:12just kind of right themselves and what we're going to talk
- 1:14about. You had to dig this weekend.
- 1:16I mean, I mean, and I'm going to give you a stat, I'll give you
- 1:201. You talked about the Big 12,
- 1:21right? And I agree, if you look at
- 1:24everything on ESPN.com, right, the entire schedule, I don't
- 1:26know what is there, 8090 games, whatever it is, there's 11 that
- 1:31are between Power for Schools. That's it. 11 games in the
- 1:35entire schedule this week that are between power and that
- 1:38counts tonight between Power for schools.
- 1:40So yeah, we have to dig a little deep.
- 1:42Good job out of you, mine and some Nuggets.
- 1:45So I guess off we go. Yeah, indeed.
- 1:48Away we go. You know, let's start with the
- 1:49Big 12 and the the week that lies ahead of them.
- 1:52The opportunity, I guess Trent is maybe a better way to put it
- 1:55right with the you're playing SEC opponents, you're paying Big
- 1:5910 opponents, you're playing an ACC game as as we're going to
- 2:03see this week for Big 12 schools in your mind and I think it's a
- 2:07probably consensus amongst the three of us.
- 2:09We think it's more likely that the Big 12 gets one bid.
- 2:13But this weekend could maybe change some opinions early in
- 2:16the season if they have a good. I mean, I don't think they're
- 2:18going to beat Oregon, the Big 12 knock off in Oregon, but as
- 2:22Oklahoma State's got a chance to do so, but other than that.
- 2:24Maybe more importantly, it could solidify themselves as a one bid
- 2:27league if Arizona State goes down to Mississippi State loses
- 2:31and Iowa State with everybody picking them this week, they
- 2:33lose to Iowa at home and Baylor gets beat by SMU and you just
- 2:38kind of continue with that narrative.
- 2:40Kansas gets say, blown out by Missouri.
- 2:43That narrative. The other one stand for BYU.
- 2:46That starts to build in just the reputation.
- 2:49Because of that, I think this is an incredibly important week.
- 2:51Not that all of them have to win or somebody has to pull a huge
- 2:54upset, but you can't afford both Arizona State and Iowa.
- 2:59Iowa State, both of them losing. So for the perception of the
- 3:02league, I think this is an incredibly important week.
- 3:05You say it that way, Bama. I think he's on to something.
- 3:08I do a little bit. I think it's I think there's
- 3:10more downside than upside. You know, listen, the one
- 3:14marquee opponent that they're playing is Oregon, right?
- 3:18Oklahoma State is going to get absolutely drilled out in
- 3:20Eugene. They lost their starting
- 3:22quarterback. They're almost a four touchdown
- 3:24underdog. I mean, the back and forth is
- 3:26unbelievable between the coaches.
- 3:28Crazy. Yeah, it is.
- 3:30I mean, I think that's maybe that's a little more for show.
- 3:33But you know, look, and I'm not sure that Gundy in a crazy way
- 3:38is maybe not on to something a little bit.
- 3:41We saw it didn't make any news up there and why would it?
- 3:44But the Southern Miss coach last week, they played Mississippi
- 3:46State, right? And he said basically said we
- 3:48hung for 1/2 and you know, we're not built to beat A-Team like
- 3:52that. An SEC team, you know, they
- 3:53spent $20 million on their line lines of scrimmage.
- 3:56We spent $3,000,000 total, whatever it was, right?
- 3:59So I mean, they have a little bit, there is a little bit of
- 4:02merit to that. But look, I think in terms of
- 4:05the Big 12, I think I think I think it is a key week.
- 4:07I mean, Baylor, look, they they lose the SMU all of a sudden now
- 4:11they're 01/2. So they're only shot at that
- 4:13point is to is, is to win the Big 12.
- 4:16And I don't know that anybody else is going to sneak in.
- 4:18I think Iowa State, it's a big week.
- 4:19Obviously they're on Fox, it's a in state rival, it's Big noon,
- 4:24all that type of stuff. I think it's you know, they've
- 4:26already been on national television once they were that
- 4:28they were the opening game of the year.
- 4:30So I think that's big. But I think there's more
- 4:32downside if if some of these teams get picked off and again,
- 4:37you know, Oregon's going to drill Oklahoma State.
- 4:39I think so I don't I don't know that that really matters.
- 4:42But you're right. You know, some of these teams
- 4:45start losing then then then it does become a one bid league.
- 4:48I don't even if they if they're successful, they're ultimately
- 4:51successful this week. I don't know that it puts them
- 4:55in play for A2 bid league. I think it's more downside than
- 4:58upside. Bama, let's get your thoughts on
- 5:01Psy Hawk. That'll kick tomorrow at 11:10
- 5:03local time on Big Fox. Is you mentioned Big Noon
- 5:07kickoff will be there. Your thoughts on Sidehawk this
- 5:09year? Well, it's a great lead in to
- 5:11Delaware, Colorado, which follows it.
- 5:14I mean, my God, how bad is this anyway?
- 5:17Oh my God, it's terrible. Listen again, I say it every
- 5:20year. I'm glad.
- 5:22I'm glad for the publicity that this rivalry is getting.
- 5:25I'm glad for the state of Iowa. It's big noon.
- 5:27It's in Ames, the weather looks like it's going to be fabulous.
- 5:30It's going to be a Chamber of Commerce kind of day for the for
- 5:33the Ames and the state and whatever.
- 5:36So you can have all the pregame eyeballs on it.
- 5:38You know, as many eyeballs as watch, you know, these games on
- 5:43the field. I mean, it's hard to take any.
- 5:44I don't know what I what did last week.
- 5:46I mean, I saw the numbers. I don't think you can
- 5:48necessarily take away anything. When they played Albany, you
- 5:53know, was it grown through for 44 yards or whatever it was and
- 5:56they but they ran for 3:10. So I don't know if they were
- 5:58just playing conservative on purpose because they didn't have
- 6:00to do anything more. Gronowski was bad.
- 6:04Yeah. And again, I didn't watch.
- 6:06I didn't watch a down of it, right, right.
- 6:11Yes, I don't have to. So look, I like Iowa State.
- 6:16I know the line is 3 1/2. I'll tell you, I like that.
- 6:20I like what they've done. They've been tested, right.
- 6:22They they have a big win over Kansas State in Dublin.
- 6:26Again, kind of a, you know, you thought maybe it was a sort of a
- 6:29trap week. And I'm again, no idea how good
- 6:31S South Dakota is. We saw Kansas State struggle.
- 6:35Iowa State did not struggle. I think that's a good sign for
- 6:38them. So now they get back into a
- 6:39normal week, normal preparation, the biggest rival coming to
- 6:43their place, you know, can they handle being a favorite?
- 6:46I like Beck, I think he's tough. I like what they do on the
- 6:50ground. I just think they're a more
- 6:51balanced team. It's it's maybe a little
- 6:55sacrilege to say I like the coach better on Iowa State
- 6:59sideline because Parents has been there for so long.
- 7:02He's done so much for that university.
- 7:04I get it. But I just think on the field
- 7:05right now, Iowa State's a better team.
- 7:07I think they're a better program.
- 7:09I think they recruit better. I think he does more with less
- 7:12or more with what he has, whatever he can get.
- 7:14I think he maybe coaches him up better.
- 7:16Fairness just kind of seems a little stuck in the past.
- 7:19But look, that's why they tee it up again.
- 7:22My biggest take away is I'm happy for the state.
- 7:24I'm happy for both programs and the attention that's going to
- 7:27bring to where I think is a great underrated rivalry.
- 7:31Have Portnoy and those guys there.
- 7:32Whether you like him or not, he's, you know, he puts eyeballs
- 7:35on you. So he'll be there.
- 7:36He's already been around Des Moines.
- 7:38I saw last night on Twitter, you know, they had a couple of pizza
- 7:40places that he just visited and everything else.
- 7:42So good for him. But yeah, on the field, I'll
- 7:45take Iowa State and I'll lay the 3 1/2.
- 7:47I mean, I don't know what you guys feel.
- 7:48You guys obviously know the match up more than I do.
- 7:50I just looking at it from afar, I like what Iowa State's done
- 7:54more than I trust anything Iowa can do.
- 7:56Iowa State's shown way more so far this year.
- 7:59I'll take Iowa. It's just this game.
- 8:02It's just this game. Right, you're right, you're
- 8:05absolutely right. You just just makes no sense.
- 8:07It doesn't logic out the window. Trent, you've been on this game
- 8:11since. For for weeks before the season.
- 8:13Before the season, Bam and I both think Illinois is going to
- 8:15be good this year. You're not buying it.
- 8:18And you've had this one as their first last of the year for
- 8:21weeks. Mike Palm, just like just a
- 8:25lined up on your side of the equation here.
- 8:27He also likes the dookies. More on this game coming up at
- 8:312:00 on 1:45. You got an opinion?
- 8:33There's no doubt about it. I mean, Mensa was tremendous in
- 8:36Week 1, and I know a lot of people are pointed to, well,
- 8:38it's 10/10 with Elon. They doubled up in yardage.
- 8:40I mean, it was a dominating performance.
- 8:42The scoreboard didn't indicate it early, but it did at the end.
- 8:444517, this Duke team is alive. They have a great quarterback.
- 8:48I think maybe I can't quite get there.
- 8:50It's going to be maybe an even quarterback match up.
- 8:53Mensa is an absolute stud as we learned A2 lane a year ago.
- 8:56This Duke team is good in Illinois.
- 8:58They won a lot of close ones last year.
- 9:00Normally doesn't happen two years in a row.
- 9:02What? Oh, that's the same time as
- 9:03Cyhawk, isn't it? It's 11.
- 9:05It is. That's too.
- 9:06Bad Yeah. 11 AM. Bama, your thought, well, I
- 9:08think you like Illinois, at least you did.
- 9:10Pre season do you still? I do I agree with Mensa.
- 9:14I think he's dangerous. I don't know that you see that
- 9:19type of quarterback much in the Big 10.
- 9:22I mean, you know, Oregon has some some mobile guys and maybe
- 9:25Michigan does now as well. But I mean, he's he's a problem.
- 9:28There's no question. He's a pest.
- 9:30He can he can pretty much do it all right.
- 9:32And I think this is this is a great get if you want to look at
- 9:36it that way for Duke to get this guy.
- 9:40I like Altmire. I do too.
- 9:43I mean, he's not in the Drew hour level or anything, but I
- 9:46think he's serviceable. He's steady.
- 9:49We know we, you absolutely know what Illinois is going to try to
- 9:54do. They're going to come in and
- 9:55they're going to try to bully Duke.
- 9:57And I think they can. I mean, I think that's what
- 9:59Bilma wants to do. I think they're bigger, they're
- 10:02more physical. If they can hold, if they don't
- 10:04turn the ball over, which is a big if, always a big if, can
- 10:09they can their defense containment.
- 10:11So not necessarily shut him down, but can they keep him
- 10:15from, you know, busting the big play?
- 10:17Because Illinois doesn't have a lot of big play in them.
- 10:20At least they haven't, I don't think in years past.
- 10:23They're more methodical. You know, they want to grind you
- 10:25down, They want to wear you down.
- 10:27That's just Bill my style. He's been that way everywhere
- 10:29he's been at Arkansas, at Wisconsin.
- 10:31He's that way now. Look, I know Trent is thinks
- 10:35he's onto something and he might be, but I'm I'm going to stick
- 10:39with Illinois. I think this is the game.
- 10:42I think I picked him as a playoff team.
- 10:44I'm not mistaken. Maybe my sleeper team or
- 10:47whatnot. You know, they're ranked eleven,
- 10:49but I'll stick with Illinois. I'm not going to abandon him
- 10:51after week one just because you know, the Co host says, hey,
- 10:55look, you know, they're in trouble here.
- 10:56So but I just I don't know. I like Altmire.
- 10:59If he is a great quarterback matchup, it's too bad.
- 11:02I'll be, you know, 90 at the time.
- 11:03I'll be watching Iowa, Iowa State, unless it's three to
- 11:07nothing in the third quarter. Then I'll flip it over and watch
- 11:09this one because I don't think this was going to be 3 to
- 11:11nothing. Yeah, the only the.
- 11:12Only thing I'll see. Is if there's the halftimes
- 11:15don't match up with each other, maybe I'll have right?
- 11:17Yeah, exactly. But yeah, this, this is a good
- 11:19game. This is this is a good game for
- 11:20both teams and I think a good test for both going into their
- 11:23conference seasons. All right, let's go to this one.
- 11:25Trent, Kansas Mizzou Border Battle speaking.
- 11:28A good test for both schools. Quite honestly, I think both.
- 11:31Purbiola was really good. He wasn't named the starter with
- 11:33the starter got hurt in the 1st Dr. of the season, or at least
- 11:36very early in the football game. Here comes Rabula and they win
- 11:40convincingly. But I like this Kansas team,
- 11:44Trent. They've looked really good first
- 11:46couple of games that they've played this year.
- 11:48It's Kansas Mizzou, and what do you do?
- 11:50I like this ball control Kansas offense.
- 11:53They're keeping it simple for Jalen Daniels, right?
- 11:55Run the ball when it's there, don't force passes down the
- 11:58field, dink, dunk and use that tremendous run game.
- 12:02And I think it's a match that can cause some problems here.
- 12:04I think this is going to be a tremendous game.
- 12:06I think it's going to be inside that touchdown.
- 12:08I think we're going to be setting up for a really good
- 12:10one. You're going to be saying this
- 12:12is going to be maybe the game of the week and I think it's going
- 12:14to be that good. So remind me of this because you
- 12:16followed closer than I do, Purbula did I?
- 12:18Was there a chance? Was there a time?
- 12:20If he wasn't at Missouri, he'd be.
- 12:21I was quarterback. That would be the deal, yes.
- 12:24But does was there a time? Did Missouri come after Iowa?
- 12:27Helped me out with the timeline they were.
- 12:28Recruiting. It was back and forth.
- 12:30Yes, OK, yes. And Iowa.
- 12:32Did you ever feel like Pabula is headed to Iowa City?
- 12:35It wasn't me, it was the football staff that he was.
- 12:37They did. They did.
- 12:38They thought they had him. Yeah, Missouri got him.
- 12:41Missouri got him. Yep.
- 12:42Alabama. Mizzou, Kansas.
- 12:46I'll tell you this is no offense to the sidehawks, my favorite
- 12:48game of the week guys. Again, light week.
- 12:51There's great piece on ESPN, very in depth piece.
- 12:55I did not realize this. This goes back to the old Big 8
- 12:58and you know, Google that kids, if you really want to have some
- 13:00fun, you know, go back to the Big 8.
- 13:04I did not realize how deep seated this rivalry is between
- 13:07the fans. I mean, they do not like each
- 13:11other, right? I remember the basketball, you
- 13:14know, Norm Stewart and you know, and back in the day, I mean,
- 13:18these two just really got after and back when they were in the
- 13:22same conference. Look, Missouri's got such a
- 13:25weird schedule guys. You look at it basically their
- 13:28first six games are home and that you throw an open week in
- 13:31there. They do not leave Columbia until
- 13:35October the 18th when they play Auburn.
- 13:38Their first six are at home. This is by far the biggest one
- 13:41of those six, you know, Central Arkansas, Lafayette, they do
- 13:46play South Carolina. That's that's going to be a
- 13:49tough one for them. So I think this is a big game
- 13:51for Mizzou. Look, I think he was always
- 13:54going to be the quarterback. I know Horn got hurt.
- 13:56You know, they kind of said, yeah, you know what, we're going
- 13:59to use the opener as let's see who comes out the best.
- 14:02I think it was always his job. I do like, I agree with Trent.
- 14:05I like what they're doing with Jaden Daniels a little bit.
- 14:08Look, they're going to try to run it again.
- 14:10Keep it simple. What's going to happen if they
- 14:13get behind, right? They played from ahead both
- 14:15games. I think the opening went over
- 14:17Fresno is maybe a little better than people think it is.
- 14:20I know it's, you know, Fresno, it's Mountain West and all that,
- 14:23but I think that was a little better.
- 14:26You know, Missouri has not been tested, but this I just love
- 14:29this game. I mean, I just I'm going to be
- 14:32watching it. There's really nothing else this
- 14:36I will take the 6 1/2 as well. I think I just, I don't know if
- 14:41it's going to be high scoring. My first thought was man, 2 can
- 14:45maybe go up and down a little bit, but I don't know.
- 14:47I'm not sure about that now. And that's what drink which
- 14:50wants to do. I just don't know if Kansas is
- 14:52going to play into that or not. But yeah, I think if Missouri,
- 14:56I'm sorry, Kansas can control the ball and Daniels takes care
- 14:59of it. I think it's going to be a fight
- 15:01to the end. You know what, Missouri can win
- 15:033127 something like that 2723, but that's inside the number.
- 15:09So but again, my favorite game of the week.
- 15:11I did not realize the hatred here and boy, I think it's going
- 15:14to be on display and there's nothing.
- 15:16He's one of those rivalries. Unfortunately, there's gotten
- 15:18lost with all the conference shake UPS they play this year.
- 15:21There were I think there's a return game in Lawrence next
- 15:24year and then they don't play for four or five years.
- 15:26One of those great rivalries. Unfortunately that's gone by the
- 15:28wayside. But I'm glad, I'm glad that it's
- 15:31on this week when there's really not a a lot to compete with it.
- 15:33I think it's going to be fun. Saves the mid afternoon window,
- 15:36no doubt about it. The primetime window, Trent is
- 15:38Michigan and Oklahoma. Bryce Underwood, College
- 15:41football's never seen a freshman quarterback like me.
- 15:44That's exactly what he said. I can't wait to watch him.
- 15:47Trent. I'll be honest, I didn't see
- 15:49Michigan to play last week. I want to see him go into Norman
- 15:53in front of that crowd Mater. We both really like the way he
- 15:56his game shapes up. I'm looking forward to this one.
- 15:59Trent, what about you? Yeah, Mater, I think is going to
- 16:01be tremendous in this game. My question is, can Oklahoma run
- 16:04the football if they can have any Subway game?
- 16:07Well, the problem is that the rest of the team didn't, and
- 16:09that was a major issue for them against Illinois State a week
- 16:12ago. Now it's Michigan on the other
- 16:14side. If Oklahoma can be even OK
- 16:17running the football, I think they win it and win it
- 16:19comfortably, win it by 10, you know, about 2717, something in
- 16:22that realm. But they have to show an ability
- 16:24to run the football. To me, that's the biggest key in
- 16:27this game. I like the Oklahoma side.
- 16:29I think there's a better side and Underwood in this
- 16:30environment, I don't think it's going to look great.
- 16:33Oklahoma has to be more balances.
- 16:35Yeah, we saw a freshman quarterback last week go on to a
- 16:38big stage and didn't turn out well.
- 16:40Bama does this one. I like Michigan.
- 16:44I mean, I just think for the what Trent just said, especially
- 16:47with the points I mean, I'm taking, I think it's 5 1/2 right
- 16:50now. I'm definitely taking those.
- 16:52I think Michigan, I'm sorry, I think Oklahoma will struggle to
- 16:55run the ball outside of the quarterback.
- 16:57And I think if I think if Material wants to run 1520
- 17:01times, I think Michigan's going to let him because I think #
- 17:03him, right? This is this is not, it's not
- 17:05who you played last week. This is a real Big 10 team, both
- 17:09these both these coaches because you really use this win, right?
- 17:13They both had big wins that disappointing years last year.
- 17:17But Oklahoma may be salvage a little bit beating Alabama.
- 17:22You know, Michigan's last two games of the season were, of
- 17:25course, the big win over Ohio State and Columbus yet again.
- 17:29And then they also beat Alabama in the ball game.
- 17:31You know, take that for what it's worth.
- 17:32What bowl games are worth these days?
- 17:35I'm, I'm, I'm with you. I'm excited to see what Bryce
- 17:39Underwood is. He really is.
- 17:40He is there is he also on no steak or is there some meat on
- 17:44this bone? And I think there's some meat.
- 17:46I I, I like what Sharon Moore has done.
- 17:48He's kind of kept, he's kept it steady.
- 17:50There was a lot of transition after Harbaugh, all the crap
- 17:54this year, you know, with the, you know, the sanctions and
- 17:57everything else. I think this is a chance for
- 17:59them to come out and maybe not say we're back because they've
- 18:03got listen, Oklahoma is a good team, right?
- 18:05It's an SEC team. It's on the road, prime time,
- 18:09big game, big high profile game. They've got better opponents.
- 18:12So they got to play this year. But I think this is both, both
- 18:15coaches could use this because if Oklahoma drops this one,
- 18:19guys, their SEC schedule is pretty tough.
- 18:21I mean, they get Auburn, who looks better at home.
- 18:24We know they got Texas, they got to go to South Carolina, they go
- 18:27to Tennessee, they go to Alabama.
- 18:29I mean, that's pretty salty. So I think I think Venables
- 18:32could really use this. He might get it, but I am going
- 18:37to take the points because I think Bryce Underwood is going
- 18:40to be that good and I think they're going to shut down their
- 18:42running game. If Oklahoma runs it for
- 18:44A120530140 yards, they win. I don't think they can do it,
- 18:49and I think they're going to be stubborn and trying to do it,
- 18:52and I think that's plays in the Michigan's hands.
- 18:54Got five games to talk about. We're only going to get through
- 18:56three. It's unbelievable.
- 18:59But we got to do this one in a minute and I'm going to throw BC
- 19:03a Boston College party out there because there is an Iowa
- 19:05opponent down the road on Senior Day.
- 19:08Trent, Michigan State. Boston College.
- 19:11Maybe it's just my affinity for Bill O'Brien, but I like BC in
- 19:15this spot, I, I think they're going to hang around.
- 19:17That was against Fordham in week #1 but Aidan Childs, he's so
- 19:21inconsistent. Yeah, I like him, though.
- 19:23He was terrible last week. He was bad last week against
- 19:26Western Michigan, and that's what you get.
- 19:28It comes down to that, doesn't it?
- 19:29He's either going to be great or he's going to be average or
- 19:32worse, and that will dictate the way this game plays out.
- 19:35Bammy, you like this game? Yeah, it's about a field goal,
- 19:39by the way. Michigan State 3 1/2.
- 19:42Yeah, it's hard to know. I mean, again, Charles, like you
- 19:45said, he just, it is what it is with him, right?
- 19:47I mean, this is what you're going to get Jonathan Smith year
- 19:492 after leaving Oregon State. You think maybe they're a little
- 19:53bit better here. I don't know.
- 19:55It's this is one that has my interest a little bit.
- 19:59But let's face it with, you know, opposite of Oklahoma,
- 20:02Michigan, I don't know how much I'll see it is I'm glad it's on
- 20:05NBC and not just Peacocks. You don't have to flip between,
- 20:08you know, you know, YouTube TV and then a streaming service.
- 20:12So you can't flip around. But I'll fix pieces of it.
- 20:15But. But it's it's the fact that this
- 20:18is a prime time game on NBC says again, where we are this week in
- 20:22my. Opinion Your sneaky good game of
- 20:23the week, Trent. Sneaky good.
- 20:25I mentioned it a little bit earlier when we were talking to
- 20:27Palm. I'm interested in UCLAUNLV, the
- 20:30alphabet soup bowl, what's happening there and could Foster
- 20:34and Week 2 all of a sudden he hot seat starts to talk.
- 20:37Yeah, that would. Can they get beat?
- 20:40Yeah, but UNLV tight spread. Is decent, Yeah, I mean the last
- 20:44week that looked better. Bama, your sneaky game of the
- 20:46week is. Well, that game right there, I'm
- 20:48taking ULV all UNLV all day. My sneaky good game.
- 20:52I've got I got a bunch of them, but you know, I'll just start
- 20:56with I think South Florida going to Gainesville.
- 20:58I mean, they they they had a really nice win at home over
- 21:02Boise State. Florida played Long Island last
- 21:05week. Have they been tested?
- 21:06Nope. Florida schedule guys is just
- 21:09absolutely brutal. They go to LSU and they go to
- 21:13Miami the next two weeks. They get an open day, then they
- 21:16host Texas and they go to A&M. That is as tough as it gets.
- 21:19So they really need this game. It's going to be hot as anything
- 21:24down in the swamp at a 4:00 PM kick off.
- 21:27Again, this may be one of those weather delay type of things,
- 21:29so, but I'll take that one. I think this is one of those, I
- 21:34don't want to say trap games, but you know, that schedule is
- 21:36in front of Florida. I mean, it might be overlooked.
- 21:38I think the best thing for Florida was the way that South
- 21:41Florida just handily beat Boise State because that should have
- 21:45their attention. All right, I'll go San Diego
- 21:47State, Washington State, just because I love to give some love
- 21:50to the 2 remaining PAC. 12 and the Beaver screwed me last week.
- 21:53I hate them. And my sons, Yeah, anyways.
- 21:57No Kentucky. Ole Miss, Ken.
- 21:59Well, no, but more on that coming up.
- 22:01It's a 145. There we go.
- 22:04My best bet of the week is exactly that game, Bama.
- 22:07You know how I love Kentucky. My, my, my, what do we call it?
- 22:11My guilty pleasure squad. Guilty pleasure.
- 22:14That's right, your guilty pleasure team.
- 22:15Nice win for them last. Oh, huge.
- 22:17Nice win for your Boilermakers too.
- 22:19The. Boilers are.
- 22:20Back. Yeah, wasn't it?
- 22:22Yeah. Are they?
- 22:23No. Yeah.
- 22:24No good win for them. You'll be you'll be back on
- 22:26Monday. In the packed house, I will take
- 22:28care guys. See.
- 22:29You, buddy. Good to talk to you.
- 22:30Bama, Bob Trenton I previewing college football.
- 22:33All right, we'll take time time out.
- 22:34Tom Kakert and will join us next.
- 22:36We'll get his perspective on Psy Hawk.
- 22:38Our picks still to come, Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports
- 22:41Radio Network. I'm Millery Condon, welcome back
- 22:55just past 130 on a football Friday.
- 22:58Let's get to our friend Tom Kakert joins us every Friday
- 23:01regardless of the season. He makes his way over to central
- 23:05Iowa when he's with Miller and Condon.
- 23:07Hello, Tom, How are you? It's it's windy out today, guys.
- 23:11Yes, it is, but apparently not tomorrow, so that's the good
- 23:14news. That's the good news because
- 23:16because that place is the wind tunnel.
- 23:18Yes, absolutely is not as bad as it once was, but it can still
- 23:23blow. Definitely, no doubt about that.
- 23:25Tom did. This game just gives me fits
- 23:28each and every year, which one of the reasons I love it maybe
- 23:31as much as anything is, is you just never know.
- 23:33I mean, from what we've seen the first two weeks of Iowa State to
- 23:36what we saw last week of Iowa, Iowa State's going to clobber
- 23:39them. I'm picking Iowa for that very
- 23:41reason, just because this game is so different than any other.
- 23:46It's I mean, you look at the history of this game.
- 23:49I mean, there's been years when Iowa State's lost and I'm not
- 23:52belittling you and I at all, but it's just it's an FDS program.
- 23:56Iowa State's lost you and I and then went and went to Iowa City
- 23:59and won. You know, Iowa almost lose if
- 24:02you and I in O 9 and then goes to Ames the next week and wins
- 24:0535, three. You know, I can't explain the
- 24:10series. Just when you do not base it on,
- 24:15boy, they're playing really well and they're not playing really
- 24:18well because every time you assume that it's going the
- 24:21opposite way, folks. Under dogs, what covered four or
- 24:25eight of the last 10, something like that.
- 24:27Yeah, it's been dogs have definitely barked in this one.
- 24:30And Iowa, is that now the big conversation going back to
- 24:33Tuesday, Tom was, of course, Mark Karnowski.
- 24:34I know you had an opportunity to talk with him over there.
- 24:38Give us your takeaways. And is there real concern?
- 24:41It sounds like he's practiced well this week, but boy, getting
- 24:44too charged up. And that's been kind of the
- 24:46company line here this week against Albany.
- 24:49You kind of have at least a concern for me now going on the
- 24:52road to Jack Trice. Yeah, of course.
- 24:55I think a week ago you got, I think Ken, you may have asked me
- 24:58like, what's going to be the storyline coming out?
- 25:00And I was like, oh, it's Gronowski's fine and he's great.
- 25:03He's going to be really good. But yeah, don't listen to me on
- 25:06that one, folks. It was way off.
- 25:10I was about, I was about as inaccurate as some of Mark
- 25:13Gronowski's passes in the first period.
- 25:16Yeah, it was not good. But everything I've heard, they
- 25:21just chalk it up the nerves because it's not like he hadn't
- 25:24seen the Albany team and it's not like they were going up
- 25:27against LSU or something like that.
- 25:32You know that he's thrown for 10,000 yards, 93 touchdowns
- 25:36coming into this season. You don't just like
- 25:39automatically like forget how to quarterback and it's not his
- 25:43shoulder. Everything that we've been told
- 25:45that he's 100%. So it's not that just I think he
- 25:50just got tight and I under sometimes.
- 25:55This is a guy who played at the FCS level.
- 25:57There weren't a lot of dollar amounts being thrown around with
- 26:00his name, but now he's, you know, he's an NIL guy and he got
- 26:05a pretty good bag, I'm sure from the University of Iowa to come.
- 26:10And you wonder if he feels some of that pressure of all that the
- 26:14expectation boy, I got to be great because they're they don't
- 26:17pay me good money here now. So I wonder if some of that got
- 26:20to him. I also wonder if maybe he's
- 26:24getting away from kind of trying to impress 70,000 people will be
- 26:28a little bit easier on him. Get on the road just with your
- 26:32teammates and you kind of just get that bunker mentality.
- 26:34But yeah, he was not great. Everything I've heard, at least
- 26:40early in the week, was he responded the, the, the term
- 26:43that was used to me was he responded really well to the,
- 26:47the suggestions from Kirk Ference and and Tim Lester.
- 26:50So I, I think he's settled down at least.
- 26:54We'll see. The proof will be in the pudding
- 26:56though when they when they snap the ball tomorrow.
- 26:59No question. If Iowa State is to win, Tom, I
- 27:01think they're going to do the so on the basis of Rocco Back
- 27:04throwing the football. I don't think that's a hot take
- 27:07by any means. I'm not sure Iowa State's going
- 27:09to be able to run the football on too many teams this year.
- 27:11But Rocco Back can throw and he's got a couple of tight ends.
- 27:14Usually it's the Iowa tight ends that are in the spot, like not
- 27:17this year, at least so far. It's it's these two that that
- 27:21Matt Campbell has in both Bramer, who's going to the NFL,
- 27:24and I think Burkle is too. The way he's come on, my God,
- 27:28what a what? A what, what an uprising.
- 27:32He's had. His arrow's pointing way up.
- 27:34So who covers those? Who covers those tight ends?
- 27:36How did they try and shut down and limit them?
- 27:38Because I think that might be the key, As big of a key as
- 27:41anything. And the the other thing that
- 27:44people forget about both those guys is they're big and I'm
- 27:46talking like tall. They're guys that they can throw
- 27:49the ball up to and they'll go get it.
- 27:52Yeah, they're just really dangerous.
- 27:53I, I joked all week that Iowa State's kind of using the Iowa
- 27:57formula for offense this year, you know, is just thrown to the
- 28:02tight ends and living that way, which is kind of what Iowa did
- 28:05for a period of time when they, they haven't had really good
- 28:08wide receiver play. So I am, I'm really curious what
- 28:13they do if they're going to play 3 backers and when they're,
- 28:16they're in the two tights, sometimes three tight end, if
- 28:19that take lopper off the field. We saw Jayden Harold get API
- 28:25last week trying to guard a tight end down the field.
- 28:28So it's a concern. It's definitely a concern,
- 28:32especially because Rocco is just so accurate.
- 28:35I mean, last week was incredible, 19 to 20.
- 28:37I mean, that's as good as it gets, really.
- 28:40And he's he's a really accurate passer and he's playing really
- 28:45confidently right now. What does running back look
- 28:48like? Take out your crystal ball and
- 28:50let us know how this thing is going to break down.
- 28:52You know, there's part of me loved what we saw from Xavier
- 28:55Williams and think the upside going to be tremendous.
- 28:57Kind of that bruiser against a game that feels like it's going
- 29:00to be very physical. But then you look back to last
- 29:03year, I would got a lot of their plays outside.
- 29:05Maybe this is a Terrell Washington type of game, as what
- 29:08Caleb Johnson did a year ago getting out to the edge.
- 29:10Who do you see getting the most carries in this game and how
- 29:12does it break down? Boy, and are we sleeping on Jeff
- 29:16Patterson years ago he came to ain't and and then one cut runs.
- 29:21I mean, he took one off for like 59 yards or something, had 86
- 29:24total and a touchdown against the Cyclones at Jack tries two
- 29:28years ago. So he's one of those guys that
- 29:30I'm going to keep my eye on too because he I thought he ran
- 29:33really well late in the game and, you know, he might have
- 29:36some confidence coming to this one.
- 29:40Yeah, Washington might be that guy that they can get outside.
- 29:44But I'll tell you, you know, Williams was the guy in most
- 29:46tossed sweep kind of place too, where he got outside and ran
- 29:50some of that outside zone. I think I was going to run a lot
- 29:52of outside zone against Iowa State just to kind of keep away
- 29:56from Orange and also kind of stretch those linebackers a
- 30:01little bit because those linebackers have been a.
- 30:03Little bit suspect. Early on in the season for the
- 30:06cyclone. What kind of stat line does Sam
- 30:10Phillips have after tomorrow? Great question.
- 30:14I'm not sure. The in one of the more
- 30:17interesting stats was they threw to like targeted 10 different
- 30:21receivers. So it wasn't like there was like
- 30:24one guy that they were zeroing in on in the past game.
- 30:26It wasn't like, oh, we're going to throw 7 times to TJ Hawkinson
- 30:30back in the day or something like that.
- 30:32But there are Sam Laporta or somebody like that.
- 30:35They spread it around to a lot of different guys.
- 30:38So I don't know that Growski's gotten a kind of a favorite
- 30:43target yet. I don't know that they've zeroed
- 30:45in on anybody. So I always kind of default to
- 30:48like the guys who've had success like Gil.
- 30:50I I still think Seth Anderson's going to end up being the
- 30:53leading receiver this year. And maybe that's the guy that
- 30:56they target a little bit more. One thing Gronowski did say on
- 30:59Tuesday was the way Iowa State plays is a kind of a soft
- 31:03coverage. So he thinks that they're
- 31:07probably going to end up dumping it off a lot.
- 31:09So he's going to want to get it into the hands of playmakers out
- 31:11of the backfield. So maybe that's Terrell
- 31:13Washington junior, too, because he is good at making people
- 31:16miss. Get him out in space.
- 31:18That'll be interesting. So you know, Kirk Ference
- 31:21recently, he's been really good in this role.
- 31:22These games that are really tight in the margins.
- 31:25It's been the really good teams that he struggled against, as
- 31:28we've found out here the last three or four years.
- 31:30What do you think it is? Why have these games, these
- 31:33close games, been going Kirk's way here over the last five
- 31:36years? And certainly rivalry games
- 31:38feels like they just always find a way.
- 31:39What do you think it is? I always call these like the KF
- 31:43special. You know, it's just where where
- 31:46his he just finds a way and it's just they they make plays.
- 31:51And you know, the key for Iowa in this run that they've had not
- 31:55losing an aim since 2011 has been turnovers.
- 31:58It's just been, you know, you look at back at the the muffed
- 32:02fun game where that was just that was a mistake on Iowa
- 32:06State. It wasn't really anybody up from
- 32:08Iowa doing anything special. But yeah, four years ago was
- 32:13what Jack Campbell and then two years ago it was Sebastian
- 32:16Castro with a pick 6, but Jack Campbell had to scoop and score.
- 32:20They've just always kind of found what that's what her
- 32:24parents Phil Parker teams do. They just get these turnovers
- 32:28and they cash in on them and kind of been the the method to
- 32:32the madness in this series for Iowa success at least on the
- 32:36road against Iowa State. Great stuff.
- 32:39Tom Caker, what time we would be in Jack Trice's press box
- 32:42tomorrow. So probably sometime around
- 32:458:30, I would guess we'll be wandering in there and getting
- 32:48getting rolling. So yeah, we'll have our live
- 32:51from the press box thread. They have a love that thread
- 32:53travel roster and all the news and updates and all that, all
- 32:58that good stuff. So yeah, looking forward to to
- 33:01to being over here for the game tomorrow.
- 33:03Enjoy it, Tom. We'll write.
- 33:05Read about it at hawkeyereport.com and we will
- 33:08talk to you next Friday. Thank you, Tom Caicard.
- 33:10OK. Thanks guys.
- 33:11Yep, good to talk to you. Tom Kecker, hawkeyereport.com on
- 33:15Cyhawk, our final Cyhawk guest of the week.
- 33:18Our picks are coming up next, Circus sports sponsor, those our
- 33:22little head to head competition as well as the competition with
- 33:24the afternoon duo that's coming up next, Miller and Condon, our
- 33:28final segment of the week. Before I forget and don't and
- 33:30run out of time and don't ask you.
- 33:32Yeah, where are you tonight? Oh yeah, I'm going to be out in
- 33:35Waukee as the Warriors take on a Kitty in our central Iowa Game
- 33:38of the Week. Should be a good one.
- 33:40Laramie, the running back for Ankeny, leads Class 5A in
- 33:43rushing yards through a week because he went over 220 a week
- 33:46ago in their Week 1 performance. Should be a good one out there.
- 33:49Both teams though. Owen one on the season, so an
- 33:52important one in Week 2, Anchedy and Waukee. 96.9 The bull is
- 33:57where Trent will have that pregame 645 or 645 coverage at 7
- 34:02and of course Joe Stacy and company will be here.
- 34:05Nathan Fisher on football Friday night starting at six.
- 34:08Our picks next it's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 34:11Off the bench, who knows football better?
- 34:15The war wages on. It's time for the afternoon
- 34:18pickup sponsored by Circa Sports on One O 6.3, KX&O and the Iowa
- 34:24Sports Radio Network. I'm Laurie Condon.
- 34:28Welcome back. 10 minutes before 2:00.
- 34:32I think probably by the time we get to November, they're waving
- 34:36the white flag. Oh, really?
- 34:37You think it's going to be? Yeah, throw in the towel.
- 34:40We are three games ahead. We are we're off to a great
- 34:43start. Trend 3 game cushion, Yes, on
- 34:46the boys in the afternoon. By the way, those boys that
- 34:48couldn't pick their nose when it comes to football games, they're
- 34:51at the Urbandale High V from 2:00 until 5:00.
- 34:55How Ray? Yes.
- 34:57Coke in Monster, you like them all?
- 35:00I need a little bit tonight to get me through the evening.
- 35:03Long night for you and a long night for the football Friday
- 35:05night crew as well. But that's where you can find if
- 35:08you're in the area, stop by, give it a little pep talk.
- 35:11God knows they need it. All right, so it's time for our
- 35:15weekly picks. I did have a good start to the
- 35:17year. Four and one house.
- 35:18Four and one. Let's get into it.
- 35:20So two and two. Two college, 2 pro and a best
- 35:23bet. Let's start with the college.
- 35:25I'm going to take UT San Antonio Trent for pick #1 and the reason
- 35:29I am taking this game is I read about a running back last week
- 35:32that went crazy against a pretty good power for team in Texas
- 35:36A&M, Henry's last name. And UTSA was one of those teams
- 35:40that everybody was well, if it's not Boise State, if it's not too
- 35:43lame, take a look at this San Antonio group.
- 35:45They might be a good squad. I'll take UTSA, pick #1 Texas
- 35:49State. On the other side of the field,
- 35:51I'm taking Michigan. I'm taking Michigan.
- 35:54Bryce Underwood, live up to it this week.
- 35:56Would it kill you? Let's be the best quarterback,
- 35:59that college football, freshman quarterback, that college
- 36:01football has ever seen. To the pros, Aaron Rodgers back
- 36:09against his former team. No, not that one.
- 36:11The Jets. On the other side of the field,
- 36:14Steelers, I think they're a pretty good team.
- 36:16And maybe I've under estimated their playoff potential this
- 36:20year. I just need to win this week by
- 36:22let by a field goal and I'd be a happy man.
- 36:25Steelers laying only three. I don't buy Justin Fields.
- 36:27I don't buy The Jets. I will take the Steelers in that
- 36:30defense to handle the New York Jets, my one NFL pick so far.
- 36:35And the other one's going to be like everybody, the Arizona
- 36:37Cardinals, I don't say think it's a free square necessarily,
- 36:41but New Orleans, if they're as bad as they everyone thinks they
- 36:44are, I think the Cards will get off to a good start.
- 36:46A lot of love for the Cards to win.
- 36:47The NFC West will see. But I'm going to lay the 6 1/2.
- 36:51My best bet of the week is in that game I talked about
- 36:53earlier, my guilty pleasure when it comes to football.
- 36:56If Kentucky's playing and I don't have to watch a game, I'm
- 36:59going to watch Kentucky. I watched Kentucky this week get
- 37:01their ass kicked. Ole Miss is going into town lane
- 37:049 1/2. Give me Lane Kiffin.
- 37:07My best bet of the week is Old Miss over Kentucky Trent.
- 37:10All right, here we go after an over week last week.
- 37:14The good news is, well, it can't get worse.
- 37:17The bad news is there's no guarantee it's going to get
- 37:19better. We will try though, 2 college, 2
- 37:21pro and my best bet, let's open up tonight.
- 37:24Let's throw things around a little bit under the lights in
- 37:26Louisville or the Cardinal welcome in James Madison after
- 37:30being decimated in the portal. They have retooled a live dog
- 37:34tonight. Give me James Madison plus the
- 37:3615 1/2. Been saying it all week.
- 37:38Time to put where my my money, where my mouth is.
- 37:40Give me the cyclones. I'll lay the three and a hook, I
- 37:43thought. You were going to take Duke?
- 37:44Now we'll get there in just a little bit to the NFL and we're
- 37:51going to open up. I have loved Atlanta in this
- 37:53spot at home. The defense improved against the
- 37:55Tampa team without Tristan Works.
- 37:57Yes, please, in a divisional game, give me the points.
- 37:59Falcons plus the two. Your Broncos aren't in trouble.
- 38:04No, I sniff a back door cover. Something goofy here.
- 38:08I'd like Cam Ward. I'm going to grab north of a
- 38:10touchdown. How about 8 1/2 with the Titans
- 38:13with pick #4? And yes, it is my best bet of
- 38:15the week, the Dookies getting the field goal at Illinois.
- 38:18I gave you credit. You've been hyping on that one
- 38:20since we started talking football.
- 38:22And I just see the cover. They don't have to win just to
- 38:24cover. Just to cover, make Bielema look
- 38:26bad, make Meme Bama look bad. As much as anything, I think
- 38:30that's going to do it for us again.
- 38:31The boys are on Urbandale Hyvee. Stop by, give him a pep talk,
- 38:35tell him there's a long way to go in this contest.
- 38:38That's going to keep clubbing him, Ken.
- 38:39Absolutely. Well, I need your help.
- 38:41Enjoy, Cyhawks. The best week of the year in the
- 38:43state of Iowa. Coming up next off the bench.
- 38:47Thanks for being with us, Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio
- 38:49Network.
