- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome to the Favorites, the podcast from the Volume Network.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Colin Cowherd's Volume Network and we created this podcast this
- 0:18Speaker 1: Thursday edition special for our new partners when we joined
- 0:23Speaker 1: the Volume Network, and it has quickly become really my
- 0:26Speaker 1: favorite hour of the week thanks to producer Matt Mitchell,
- 0:30Speaker 1: who dreamed up the entire thing and comes up with
- 0:32Speaker 1: all of his any questions that our panelists are going
- 0:35Speaker 1: to answer in this another edition of Thursday Thunderedome. This
- 0:46Speaker 1: is where guests compete alongside my co host, my bff,
- 0:51Speaker 1: the guy that I want to win, who I will
- 0:54Speaker 1: tip the scales to make sure he does professional sports
- 0:57Speaker 1: better Simon Hunter in a bout of wagers and that
- 1:01Speaker 1: makes the l SAT look like a game of bottle.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Hello Simon, Dad, thank you for the intro. I'm so
- 1:07Speaker 1: happy you're so chipper today, even though did you see
- 1:10Speaker 1: what the Bears did this morning? They gave Naggy and
- 1:13Speaker 1: your GM a three year extension. Are you fucking kidding me,
- 1:16Speaker 1: April Fole? Oh my god, Jesus Christ. I was gonna
- 1:25Speaker 1: let you swell a little bit more, but the concern
- 1:27Speaker 1: on your face, I thought you're about to have a
- 1:28Speaker 1: brain vessel pop. Oh my god, Oh my god, that
- 1:33Speaker 1: was so good, Simon. I'm like, how could I have
- 1:35Speaker 1: missed that? Even though my kid is in school, if
- 1:37Speaker 1: something happens with the Bears, he will find his phone
- 1:40Speaker 1: and text me. In addition to every alert that I get,
- 1:43Speaker 1: Oh my god, yeah, you're until I got you on tilt.
- 1:46Speaker 1: If you're as good through the rest of the show today,
- 1:49Speaker 1: Simon will be un beatable. Today you have two guest challengers.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Our first guest is another close friend of mine, former
- 1:59Speaker 1: colleague at ESPN, brilliant writer, billiant reporter, one of the
- 2:04Speaker 1: most connected people in all of sports, the Hugh Hefner
- 2:07Speaker 1: of sports. Instead rash Markazi, host of The rash Markarzi
- 2:13Speaker 1: Show on the Mighty Year ten ninety in So Cal
- 2:17Speaker 1: l A Times columnists, ESPN contributor, Sports Illustrated contributor contributing
- 2:23Speaker 1: for the Action Network as of March Madness, Hello my
- 2:27Speaker 1: friend a rash Hello Chad. Yes, I mean the fun
- 2:29Speaker 1: job that I have was the job that you created,
- 2:32Speaker 1: And I think people thought, how in the world are
- 2:34Speaker 1: you in Los Angeles and in Las Vegas? Chad woman
- 2:37Speaker 1: created covering the flight path between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
- 2:42Speaker 1: It was a tough job, Chad, but I found a
- 2:44Speaker 1: way to pull it off. You did find a way
- 2:46Speaker 1: to pull it off. And I remember I saved you
- 2:48Speaker 1: because you were like on the fucking Clippers beat and
- 2:53Speaker 1: we were sitting in the ESPN office in l A
- 2:57Speaker 1: at l A Live, and I'm like, why you the
- 3:00Speaker 1: Clippers beat. You're not even very good at it is
- 3:02Speaker 1: a terrible john for you. This was after the Clippers
- 3:05Speaker 1: blew a three one lead to Houston, and I said, Chad,
- 3:08Speaker 1: I'm covering the same thing over and over again. They
- 3:12Speaker 1: got Chris Paul and Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan's and
- 3:15Speaker 1: like it doesn't matter. They lose in the second round.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Like every single year, no one in Los Angeles cares
- 3:20Speaker 1: about the Clippers. They hate this team. Please help me
- 3:23Speaker 1: save me, Chad, And you did. Thank you. Well, you
- 3:26Speaker 1: know what I did it for the good of the company.
- 3:28Speaker 1: You are going to be joined today by action network
- 3:33Speaker 1: writer analystics ordinaire. B. J. Cunningham, who joined us full
- 3:37Speaker 1: time in later in two thousand and twenty. Had been
- 3:40Speaker 1: contributing as a freelancer for a long time. He's not
- 3:43Speaker 1: the only account and transports writer he is also not
- 3:46Speaker 1: the only person on our team who is from Iowa.
- 3:49Speaker 1: That's right, Chad, thank you very much for this is
- 3:52Speaker 1: my first ever podcast, obviously since I was an accountants.
- 3:55Speaker 1: So it's an honor to be on the Favorites today
- 3:57Speaker 1: competing for second place behind Simon. So thank you for
- 4:00Speaker 1: having me. Wow, you're coming in hot. I like it.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Look you for him. I'm over too, So yeah, during
- 4:05Speaker 1: your favor But it is funny. Either could have been
- 4:06Speaker 1: an accountant joined the FBI or being accountant and joined
- 4:09Speaker 1: the Action Nework. Looks like you joined the Action Network.
- 4:12Speaker 1: This is a lot more fun than just sitting in
- 4:14Speaker 1: my cubical scrolling Twitter all day. So, I mean, my goodness,
- 4:18Speaker 1: if I thought a rash was in a bad dark
- 4:21Speaker 1: place covering first, I thank you from being a fucking
- 4:24Speaker 1: accountant in Iowa. I mean I was in a potally
- 4:28Speaker 1: lit state run building for a long time, just sitting
- 4:32Speaker 1: in a cubicle, just wasting away the day, just betting sports.
- 4:35Speaker 1: You are very own, our very own Ron Livingston, right
- 4:39Speaker 1: that reference other than Matt Mitchell who's eighty five years old.
- 4:43Speaker 1: All right, here's how the game is played today. You'll
- 4:46Speaker 1: answer two kinds of questions. First traditional trivia questions about sports,
- 4:50Speaker 1: sports betting, and the world at large, but also completely
- 4:54Speaker 1: subjective and totally asinine open ended prompts that I alone
- 4:59Speaker 1: will judge and give every advantage to Simon Hunter. To
- 5:02Speaker 1: accumulate points, you must answer the trivia questions correctly and
- 5:06Speaker 1: also also convinced me that your responses to those open
- 5:11Speaker 1: ended prompts are better than your opponents, because, just like
- 5:15Speaker 1: sports betting, you can't get him. All right, let's begin
- 5:20Speaker 1: today's Opening Day, Part one, first segment Alive Off opening
- 5:28Speaker 1: day of MLB season, folks, let's talk baseball. Our first
- 5:33Speaker 1: question is for you, b J. You ready? Yeah? Okay.
- 5:38Speaker 1: By the way, also noted, the first time our other
- 5:43Speaker 1: baseball writer, Schanzerillo made a podcast appearance was on The Favorites.
- 5:47Speaker 1: He had never done a podcast before. I'm like, hey,
- 5:49Speaker 1: come on, It's worked out really well for him. So
- 5:51Speaker 1: this is a good omen for you. Can't go anywhere
- 5:53Speaker 1: up right now. Last month, last month, forty ye year
- 5:58Speaker 1: old Yegkees manager Aaron Boone underwent surgery to implant this
- 6:02Speaker 1: device which helps the human heart beat more regularly. That
- 6:08Speaker 1: would be a pacemaker. Wow, you totally got that right,
- 6:13Speaker 1: forty eight and you got a pacemaker? All right? Simon
- 6:17Speaker 1: Twins pitcher and fan favorite Randy Dobnak signed a five
- 6:22Speaker 1: year contract this off season. Known for his signature look
- 6:26Speaker 1: of glasses and handlebar mustache, Donac went undrafted after pitching
- 6:30Speaker 1: for tiny Alderson Broodus University, located two hours from Charleston,
- 6:35Speaker 1: the capital city of this state. Oh this is tricky.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I know you want me to say, Simon, if I
- 6:41Speaker 1: want you to win, I don't want you to say
- 6:44Speaker 1: this state. I want you to say the correct answer.
- 6:47Speaker 1: I'll go h West Virginia, West. I can't believe you
- 6:51Speaker 1: got that right. That is amazing, West Virginia. All right,
- 6:54Speaker 1: I rosh, here you go. Mets fans rejoiced when ultra
- 6:57Speaker 1: billionaire and avid art collector Steve Cone bought the team
- 7:00Speaker 1: this offseason. Cohen once paid a record one fifty five
- 7:04Speaker 1: million dollars for a Picasso painstakingly restored after someone accidentally
- 7:12Speaker 1: poked a hole in it. Oh, this is right up
- 7:14Speaker 1: your alley. That someone was this casino magnate whose signature
- 7:18Speaker 1: property on the north end of the Vegas Strip bears
- 7:22Speaker 1: his name, Steve Win. That's too easy. You probably like,
- 7:27Speaker 1: that's my home away from home thanks to Chad Bill.
- 7:29Speaker 1: But I basically the probably partied with Steve When did
- 7:34Speaker 1: the Encore remember that night with Lebron James after the
- 7:36Speaker 1: Calves won the championships. That was at the win Chadrash
- 7:42Speaker 1: was in Vegas for something else. He was getting ready
- 7:45Speaker 1: to go to bed. Someone who runs the club at
- 7:48Speaker 1: the Win or the Encore texted him and said, the
- 7:51Speaker 1: Calves are going to stop here on their way back
- 7:53Speaker 1: from uh San Francisco, having just won the NBA title
- 7:57Speaker 1: in seven games against the Warriors. A Rash shows up.
- 8:00Speaker 1: He's let into the v I P Space and he
- 8:02Speaker 1: is the one who records the first shirtless video of
- 8:05Speaker 1: j R. Smith popping champagne bottles and spraying everybody. That
- 8:08Speaker 1: becomes a meme for the next week because JR. Smith
- 8:11Speaker 1: never puts a shirt back on. You never put that
- 8:13Speaker 1: shirt back on. All right, here we go, this is
- 8:16Speaker 1: your prompt. Back in two thousand nineteen, only the Rockies
- 8:19Speaker 1: and the d Backs used human oars to store their baseballs.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Now reports say ten teams will use them in many
- 8:27Speaker 1: of these teams remain a mystery, and baseball betters are
- 8:30Speaker 1: piste amen. If you listen to the favorite podcast from
- 8:34Speaker 1: earlier this week, Shan's Rillo not happy about it. If
- 8:37Speaker 1: you were a pro league commissioner and wanted to change
- 8:39Speaker 1: the sport and infuriate gamblers, what piece of equipment would
- 8:43Speaker 1: you secretly alter? Simon? What's your winning answer? I would
- 8:48Speaker 1: love if they would just let him have quirks in
- 8:49Speaker 1: the bats, and it would just be I random to
- 8:51Speaker 1: like the players themselves don't even know bring a little
- 8:54Speaker 1: bit more offense back into baseball. But I know people
- 8:57Speaker 1: lose their mind, especially like we know the old footage
- 8:59Speaker 1: like any time a player would break their bat and
- 9:01Speaker 1: the picture or where the umpire picking up with the
- 9:03Speaker 1: cork in there all summer long. That's what you hear
- 9:05Speaker 1: about the cork in the bat. Like Sammy Sosa, everything
- 9:08Speaker 1: like that was so crazy about the ways that you
- 9:11Speaker 1: can cheat, the ways you can't cheat. What they're good with,
- 9:14Speaker 1: what they're not, the unwritten rules, a rash. What do
- 9:17Speaker 1: you got? Well, this goes with all sports but the ball.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Like remember when David Stern introduced a new basketball back
- 9:25Speaker 1: in two thousand and six, and like all the players
- 9:27Speaker 1: complained about it was the most ridiculous thing that they
- 9:29Speaker 1: sold it to sell more balls, a synthetic ball. These
- 9:33Speaker 1: guys have been playing with this ball their entire lives.
- 9:35Speaker 1: So this was the worst experiment during David Stern's time.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Imagine that during a season they switch out the ball.
- 9:43Speaker 1: You can't change the ball. You can't mess with the balls.
- 9:46Speaker 1: So if they did that or like different teams had
- 9:48Speaker 1: their own ball, like, don't mess with the ball. They've
- 9:51Speaker 1: been playing with that their entire lives. Maybe I didn't
- 9:54Speaker 1: like that exactly. Your answer is incomprehensible. There's no way. Okay,
- 10:00Speaker 1: b J, b J, please please save a rash. I'm
- 10:04Speaker 1: gonna go with robot umpires, but with a twist. Chat.
- 10:08Speaker 1: So we're gonna keep the same home plate umpires behind
- 10:11Speaker 1: home plate, but they're gonna have really tiny year pieces
- 10:13Speaker 1: in that nobody can see. And it's just Angel hernandez
- 10:16Speaker 1: An Lby headquarters calling balls and strikes for every single game,
- 10:19Speaker 1: because wouldn't you want Major League Baseball it's most experienced
- 10:22Speaker 1: umpire calling balls and strikes for every single game. Plus
- 10:26Speaker 1: nobody really knows what a good or bad call is
- 10:29Speaker 1: from here on. And if you want to infuriate gamblers specifically,
- 10:32Speaker 1: maybe Sean's Rillo. That'd be a pretty good way to
- 10:34Speaker 1: do it. That is the most devious, ingenious, evil way
- 10:43Speaker 1: to change this game. It's connected to like the most
- 10:48Speaker 1: insider joke in baseball, which is Angel Hernandez as the
- 10:52Speaker 1: umpire you never want. It connects it to one of
- 10:55Speaker 1: the most hotbutton issues, which is balls and strikes, and
- 10:58Speaker 1: connects it to the broader conversation about the use of
- 11:02Speaker 1: technology in calling those balls and strikes. Simon, you know,
- 11:06Speaker 1: I love you, and you had an advantage because a
- 11:07Speaker 1: rash like was just bumbling. But b J, that was
- 11:12Speaker 1: such a good answer. I'd expect that from a guy
- 11:15Speaker 1: as smart as b J. Well, thank you very much.
- 11:17Speaker 1: But I was really just thinking what could piss off
- 11:19Speaker 1: seans Rill of the most. If you were thinking creatively,
- 11:22Speaker 1: then you totally nailed it. All right, b J, You've
- 11:25Speaker 1: got two big answers, right, so far, well done. All Right,
- 11:29Speaker 1: here we go. Let's have some fun. We're gonna play
- 11:31Speaker 1: the nickname game. What's your name? Who are you? What's
- 11:36Speaker 1: your name? What's your name? What's your name? Let's play
- 11:40Speaker 1: the nickname game. Major League Baseball players have a rich
- 11:44Speaker 1: history of colorful nicknames, so we asked our Action Network
- 11:47Speaker 1: followers for their favorite current MLB nicknames. I answered this
- 11:51Speaker 1: question on Twitter yesterday, but here are some answers. B
- 11:54Speaker 1: J Twitter follower at Mike Gundy twelve. I can't it's
- 12:00Speaker 1: not really Mike Gundy who contributed. I'm sure at Mike
- 12:04Speaker 1: Undy twelve said. The greatest nickname belongs to the twins,
- 12:09Speaker 1: William's Astado. He's also known as la tortuga. The Spanish
- 12:14Speaker 1: word for this reptile. Is that a dinosaur? No, the
- 12:24Speaker 1: correct answer is tortoise, tortuga tortoise. I was a Spanish
- 12:29Speaker 1: miner too, so that's that's going to hurt a little.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Are you kidding me? I'm not what the funk man?
- 12:35Speaker 1: How could you get that wrong? Knowing being a Spanish minor. Well,
- 12:38Speaker 1: I haven't really spoken Spanish since I graduated college, so
- 12:41Speaker 1: that's probably why. Yeah, but that was like yesterday, all right.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Simon Twitter follower at dud Lawson nominated Juan Soto of
- 12:49Speaker 1: the Nationals for best nickname. His moniker, Childish Bambino, Oh
- 12:53Speaker 1: my God, that's so good, is a combination of Babe
- 12:55Speaker 1: Ruth and Childish Gampino, The stage name of this actor
- 12:59Speaker 1: and former are of NBC's community. I have no idea.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Carlos made, Donald Glover, childish Gambino, brilliant guy Rash Twitter
- 13:11Speaker 1: follower at Brett Brillante nominated braves infielder Pablo Sandoval. His
- 13:18Speaker 1: famous nickname derives from this popular two eight animated martial
- 13:23Speaker 1: arts filmand Kung Fu Panda. I'm gonna give it to you.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Well done, redeemed myself. Yes, we'll see what happens in
- 13:33Speaker 1: this question, because because this is where you gotta get creative. Okay,
- 13:37Speaker 1: here at the Favorites, we believe baseball needs more nicknames
- 13:40Speaker 1: because cashing a ticket on a walk off home run
- 13:43Speaker 1: and screaming La Panthera is way more fun than saying
- 13:48Speaker 1: hooray Luis Robert. So your job is to choose any
- 13:52Speaker 1: mL player and sell me on a brand new nickname, Rash.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Now is your chance to redeem yourself. I gotta do this.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Will Smith just turned twenty six, catcher for the Dodgers,
- 14:05Speaker 1: future star in my book The Fresh Prince. He is
- 14:08Speaker 1: really pushing back on this name. He doesn't want it
- 14:11Speaker 1: as his walk up stun. He does not want to
- 14:13Speaker 1: be known. It doesn't matter. You can't pick your nickname. Chad.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Will Smith is the fresh Prince. He is the fresh Prince.
- 14:21Speaker 1: He's young, He's the catcher for the Dodgers. Will Smith
- 14:23Speaker 1: lives in Hollywood. They gotta make this happen. It doesn't
- 14:26Speaker 1: matter what Will Smith wants. You are the fresh Prince.
- 14:29Speaker 1: That's your walk up song. This is your name. Embrace it,
- 14:33Speaker 1: young man. I don't mind it. I don't mind it.
- 14:36Speaker 1: I would also like each of you to give me
- 14:37Speaker 1: what your walk up song would be, since you mentioned it,
- 14:40Speaker 1: and of course I'll give you mine extra credit if
- 14:43Speaker 1: I love your walk up song, Genuine Pony. If Genuine
- 14:51Speaker 1: Pony comes on and you're not dup off your seats dancing,
- 14:55Speaker 1: we can't be friends when you hear my name. And
- 14:57Speaker 1: I'm about to go up to beat Genuine pe Genuine
- 15:07Speaker 1: Pony and the Fresh Prince b J. So I'm gonna
- 15:11Speaker 1: go down the beaten path. Here a little bit for
- 15:12Speaker 1: a nickname on golf with Tigers opening day starter Matthew Boyd,
- 15:16Speaker 1: and I want to give him the nickname gas Can
- 15:18Speaker 1: Matt Boyd because when things start going wrong, nobody stokes
- 15:21Speaker 1: the fire quite like Matt Boyd. I mean, in three
- 15:24Speaker 1: different times last year he gave up seven earned runs.
- 15:27Speaker 1: He only had twelve starts. Last year he actually led
- 15:29Speaker 1: major League Baseball, giving up fifteen home runs and twelve starts.
- 15:32Speaker 1: So if you're ever gonna bet the Tigers this year
- 15:34Speaker 1: and you're betting Matthew Boyd, maybe just steer clear of
- 15:37Speaker 1: it and go somewhere else. So gas Can Matt Boyd's
- 15:40Speaker 1: what I'm going with many layers to love there. And
- 15:43Speaker 1: you are the leader in the clubhouse right now, obviously
- 15:46Speaker 1: making a reference to the old time oil Can Boyd
- 15:50Speaker 1: pitcher for the Red Sox. I love that you're elevating
- 15:54Speaker 1: it for the new generation, tying it to what a
- 15:57Speaker 1: dumpster fire this guy can be and he's on the mound.
- 16:01Speaker 1: I think that is amazing, excellent, excellent leader in the
- 16:04Speaker 1: clubhouse answer, But you gotta back it up with a
- 16:06Speaker 1: walk up song. Yeah, I think I gotta go. First
- 16:09Speaker 1: thing off my head was September by Earth one and Fire.
- 16:11Speaker 1: I think that would just get everybody going right when
- 16:14Speaker 1: you walk up to the plate. I mean, nobody can
- 16:15Speaker 1: just sit down in their seat and just be quiet
- 16:18Speaker 1: when that song comes on. So September, Earth Went and Fire.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Do you reber you were showing more personality today than
- 16:32Speaker 1: anybody should expect from an accountant who lives in Iowa.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I know it's crazy, right, you came to play Simon
- 16:40Speaker 1: PJ is giving you a run for his money. And now,
- 16:43Speaker 1: originally I had done something mean, but I think I'm
- 16:45Speaker 1: just gonna end up telling the story anywhere. My My
- 16:47Speaker 1: nickname was gonna be Casper from Mike Trout because you
- 16:49Speaker 1: never hear from so I was gonna go with Casper.
- 16:51Speaker 1: That's good, but tell you that, yeah, I do like that.
- 16:54Speaker 1: So in two thousand and ten, um, as we know,
- 16:58Speaker 1: I was working TV and my cousin you're working on
- 17:00Speaker 1: the Jersey. My cousin he was in high school. He
- 17:02Speaker 1: played for a small school and he made to the
- 17:04Speaker 1: state finals. So he's like, you have to come to
- 17:06Speaker 1: this game. I all right, no doubt, I'm gonna be there.
- 17:08Speaker 1: And I get there, and like small schools, like the
- 17:11Speaker 1: tallest kid might be like five ten five knights, like schools.
- 17:13Speaker 1: These schools have small kids. And there's a kid there
- 17:16Speaker 1: that is six to probably like to twenty, just pure muscle.
- 17:20Speaker 1: And of course it's Mike Trout. He's from South Jersey.
- 17:22Speaker 1: So my cousins playing Mike Trout's team, and it's like
- 17:26Speaker 1: the first thing he gets on base, he steals for
- 17:28Speaker 1: steal second and then he steals home, so he scores
- 17:30Speaker 1: the first run of the game. So the game is
- 17:32Speaker 1: one one going into the ninth and the coach brings
- 17:34Speaker 1: everyone in and they're all like, we just walked this kid,
- 17:37Speaker 1: like we don't want to pitch to him, and he goes,
- 17:39Speaker 1: I don't care if that kid's name is Pike Bass
- 17:41Speaker 1: or Trout. We're pitching of this kid. And first pitch
- 17:45Speaker 1: home run Mike Trout. They went to the one they
- 17:47Speaker 1: win state. So that was my first experience of this
- 17:49Speaker 1: kid in Mike Trout. And then sure enough a year
- 17:51Speaker 1: later he gets drafted. He's a legend now on baseball,
- 17:53Speaker 1: So that that was my first experience of Mike Trout.
- 17:56Speaker 1: I do love that nickname. It is so unfortunate that
- 17:59Speaker 1: he ends up playing for or Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Rash has a radio show in southern California. I bet
- 18:07Speaker 1: I can count on one hand the number of times
- 18:11Speaker 1: he will talk about Mike Trout this year. Chad. The
- 18:13Speaker 1: only time we talked about him yesterday was that he
- 18:16Speaker 1: came in tenth in Jersey self behind Keiking Hernandez. Ki Hernandez,
- 18:21Speaker 1: utility player for the Dodgers who went to Boston, was nine.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Mike Trout was tent. He's not in Los Angeles, by
- 18:27Speaker 1: the way, like anyone who's been to southern California, like
- 18:29Speaker 1: Adahi was not Los Angeles. Chat. I know you've spent
- 18:31Speaker 1: some time there. It's not Los Angeles. If it takes
- 18:34Speaker 1: you two hours to get from Los Angeles to somewhere,
- 18:37Speaker 1: that place is not Los Angeles. But when no one
- 18:39Speaker 1: talks about Mike Trout out here, I completely agree with you.
- 18:42Speaker 1: I love the nickname Casper. Give me your walk up song,
- 18:45Speaker 1: so I'll go a little old school rap. I always
- 18:48Speaker 1: loved Victory. I just remember anytime you hear the opening
- 18:51Speaker 1: beat the Victory, which just gets me, am yo. The
- 18:54Speaker 1: sun don't shine forever, but it's long is his head,
- 18:57Speaker 1: and we might as well shine together a bit and nap. Then.
- 19:00Speaker 1: I am going to award B. J. Cunningham the prize
- 19:04Speaker 1: for this second prompt because the way he tied it
- 19:09Speaker 1: together with a reference to a song from the oil
- 19:12Speaker 1: can era, it was poetic and the only song that
- 19:15Speaker 1: is better than any of these, and maybe better than
- 19:17Speaker 1: September is my walk up song Crazy and Love by
- 19:22Speaker 1: Beyonce and jay Z. Yes, Simon is shaking his head.
- 19:28Speaker 1: I don't understand you guys don't like it. I mean,
- 19:30Speaker 1: that's a great song that was that came out when
- 19:33Speaker 1: I was very young, but it is a very cute
- 19:37Speaker 1: came out when you were very young. I don't even know.
- 19:43Speaker 1: I don't even know when it came out, but I
- 19:45Speaker 1: know anytime I'm on the elliptical and I heard that
- 19:47Speaker 1: song come on my iPod, that's actually I carry around
- 19:51Speaker 1: a boom box everywhere I go. I put my cassette
- 19:54Speaker 1: in of Crazy and Love and it just gets me going.
- 19:57Speaker 1: All right, it's time to give a score update right now.
- 19:59Speaker 1: For some reason, even though he should win every game,
- 20:02Speaker 1: Simon Hunter only has one point. A Rash is in
- 20:04Speaker 1: second place with two. B. J. Cunningham, the soft spoken,
- 20:09Speaker 1: mild mannered accountant from Iowa turned degenerate gambler. Action Network
- 20:15Speaker 1: analyst extraordinaire who can cover every sport, has a model
- 20:19Speaker 1: for any game, no matter what the contest. Apparently this
- 20:23Speaker 1: one too. Because he's winning and he's got three points.
- 20:27Speaker 1: Here we go. Silver Screen Sluggers is our theme For
- 20:31Speaker 1: as long as there have been movies, there have been
- 20:33Speaker 1: baseball movies. So let's talk about some important milestones, Simon.
- 20:38Speaker 1: This is the anniversary of The Fan, a movie about
- 20:42Speaker 1: a San Francisco Giants star played by Wesley Snipes and
- 20:46Speaker 1: an obsessed fan played by this incredibly famous two time
- 20:51Speaker 1: Oscar winning actor. This has to be the one Robert
- 20:54Speaker 1: down Jr. Right, I'm going to give you half a
- 20:58Speaker 1: point for getting the first name right and the first
- 21:02Speaker 1: letter of the last name right. The answer is Robert
- 21:06Speaker 1: de Niro. Robert de Niro, That's what it was. That
- 21:09Speaker 1: movie was like uncomfortable, like I remember the end of it.
- 21:12Speaker 1: Any fan was just like you felt icky after you
- 21:15Speaker 1: watched that movie because you've been there, question set out out. Man,
- 21:26Speaker 1: I can't tell many times I've had just pure rage
- 21:28Speaker 1: in my heart, feeling like other team or whatever we're
- 21:30Speaker 1: like after you watch that movie, it's like, I want
- 21:32Speaker 1: you tone it down a little bit. It's just a game.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Well you know what, sweetie, I'm giving you the points
- 21:36Speaker 1: because I'm so excited that you got Robert and the
- 21:38Speaker 1: letter D. Alright, a rash. This year is the twenty
- 21:43Speaker 1: anniversary of sixty one asterisk a movie about Roger Marris
- 21:48Speaker 1: and his pursuit of the home run record. It was
- 21:51Speaker 1: directed by this Emmy winning comedic actor and nine time
- 21:56Speaker 1: host of the Academy Awards. This was Pilly Crystal. Dude,
- 22:00Speaker 1: you are Hollywood. If you don't get this right, then
- 22:03Speaker 1: you're gonna have to give back your residency card. That
- 22:06Speaker 1: for living in l A, because that is ridiculous. The
- 22:09Speaker 1: Yankees signed me to a one day contract. Right. I
- 22:13Speaker 1: was the d H that designated Hebrew all right, b J.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Speaking of Billy Crystal. This year is the thirtieth anniversary
- 22:19Speaker 1: of the film City Slickers. Despite being a huge Yeekees fan,
- 22:23Speaker 1: Crystal's character Where's a hat of this other MLB team
- 22:27Speaker 1: for most of the film, and they made a major
- 22:29Speaker 1: contribution to his popular comic relief charity. Well, Chad, that
- 22:34Speaker 1: movie came out before I was born, and I've never
- 22:36Speaker 1: seen it, So I'm just gonna take a stab at
- 22:38Speaker 1: it and say the Boston Red Sox, it's the New
- 22:43Speaker 1: York Mets. And you get one half point deducted for
- 22:47Speaker 1: continuing to rub it in my face that you're young
- 22:49Speaker 1: and I'm old, and that I think I saw that
- 22:52Speaker 1: movie when I was in college. You'll win this battle,
- 22:55Speaker 1: but you're gonna lose the war because I'm gonna fire
- 22:58Speaker 1: your young ass after this is over. Please don't. I
- 23:01Speaker 1: don't want to go back to being an accountant. You better,
- 23:03Speaker 1: you better start being nicer to old people. Here We
- 23:05Speaker 1: Go is the thirty five anniversary of the original Bad
- 23:11Speaker 1: News Bears, the heartwarming story of a drunken, loudmouth X
- 23:15Speaker 1: minor league pitcher who for some reason is named the
- 23:18Speaker 1: manager of a kid's baseball team. In the spirit of
- 23:21Speaker 1: the Bad News Bears and their coach, Morris Buttermaker, please
- 23:26Speaker 1: give me your pick for the MLB player who make
- 23:30Speaker 1: the worst youth baseball coach. For example, Pete Rose will
- 23:34Speaker 1: be an awful choice. B J. Well, Chad, I'm gonna
- 23:38Speaker 1: cater to your hometown Chicago here, and I'm gonna go
- 23:40Speaker 1: with big Z Carlos Sambrono because I don't think anybody
- 23:43Speaker 1: from the early two thousand's had more let's call it
- 23:47Speaker 1: passion and Carlos Sambrono and I can just imagine him
- 23:51Speaker 1: coaching little league team and screaming at the umpire, getting
- 23:54Speaker 1: kicked out of his third strade game, and as a
- 23:56Speaker 1: parent sitting in the crowd being like, you know what,
- 23:58Speaker 1: I think. I'm just gonna sign up well John for soccer.
- 24:00Speaker 1: I don't think baseball's really is thing, so I'm gonna
- 24:02Speaker 1: go with big Z. I like that a lot. Alright,
- 24:05Speaker 1: a rush listen. I like Trevor Bauer. He's from North Hollywood.
- 24:10Speaker 1: He went to u C. L A. He came down
- 24:11Speaker 1: back to the hometown Dodgers. Terrible youth baseball coach. This
- 24:15Speaker 1: guy pitched with one eye closed just because he wanted
- 24:18Speaker 1: to test himself. What are you talking about? And he's
- 24:20Speaker 1: addicted to social media. As soon as he comes to
- 24:23Speaker 1: Los Angeles, he said, I'm gonna take a break from
- 24:26Speaker 1: social media. He's right back on. I'm not a fan,
- 24:28Speaker 1: he would He's a fantastic picture, not a good youth
- 24:31Speaker 1: baseball coach. Al Right, Trevor Bauer cy young winner, new
- 24:36Speaker 1: picture for the Los Angeles Dodgers, the World Series defending
- 24:40Speaker 1: champion Simon. In my head, immediately I thought of Kenny Powers.
- 24:43Speaker 1: I know that's a fictional character. My companion. I'm walking
- 24:47Speaker 1: to a fucking hornets nest. All right, now'll be my companion.
- 24:51Speaker 1: I guess I'll have to go with Barry Bonds like Batman.
- 24:54Speaker 1: He is so intimidating and scary and he's weird, so
- 24:57Speaker 1: I can't imagine him being a bunch of kids like
- 25:00Speaker 1: trying to act nice and sweet and then he'll just
- 25:02Speaker 1: eventually snap when all these kids can't get hits and
- 25:04Speaker 1: he's like, you know, this guy is one of the
- 25:06Speaker 1: greatest hitters ever. He could see what kind of scenes
- 25:08Speaker 1: are coming in on the baseball before you would hit it, like,
- 25:10Speaker 1: this guy is one of the kinds. So for someone
- 25:12Speaker 1: that would lose their cool and that's full of old
- 25:14Speaker 1: Royd rage, I'm gonna go with Barry Bonds allegedly. I
- 25:17Speaker 1: think that's a really interesting idea. I'm giving Simon Hunter
- 25:21Speaker 1: the win on this one. All right, Part four, here
- 25:25Speaker 1: we go. We can all agree that Angel's outfielder Mike Trout,
- 25:29Speaker 1: the eight time All Star, three time m v P
- 25:31Speaker 1: killer of dreams for small town teams in southern New Jersey,
- 25:36Speaker 1: should never be confused with actual Trout, the beloved species
- 25:41Speaker 1: of fish. So in honor of Opening Day, we're going
- 25:45Speaker 1: to play a game called Mike Trout or real Trout
- 25:51Speaker 1: Fucking Matt Mitchell. The game is very I will give
- 25:54Speaker 1: you a Trout fact. You tell me if it applies
- 25:59Speaker 1: to my Trout, Actual Trout or both. You're ready, b J.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Mike Trout or Real Trout. I feel like I should
- 26:08Speaker 1: get some regis filled in. Who wants to be a
- 26:10Speaker 1: millionaire music under this? B J Mike Trout or Real Trout?
- 26:18Speaker 1: Comfortable in both fresh water and ocean water. I'm gonna
- 26:23Speaker 1: go Real Trout both. The answer is both. Matt Mitchell
- 26:29Speaker 1: did extensive research on this. Simon Real Trout or Mike
- 26:34Speaker 1: Trout has been observed in every continent except Antarctica. Real
- 26:41Speaker 1: Trout correct a rash, Real Trout or Mike Trout native
- 26:47Speaker 1: to New Jersey Mike Trout. It's both. Cha. We have
- 26:53Speaker 1: talked about Mike Trout more on this show than all
- 26:56Speaker 1: of Los Angeles media come by, not just radio, not
- 26:58Speaker 1: just all of Los Angeles media. It's true Mike Trout
- 27:02Speaker 1: has gotten more national attention on this show that he
- 27:05Speaker 1: has in all of media combined. That is no joke,
- 27:10Speaker 1: all right, b J. Real Trout or Mike Trout. Proven
- 27:14Speaker 1: ability to spawn both correct Simon current value Real Trout
- 27:23Speaker 1: or Mike Trout five d and fifty seven thousand dollars
- 27:27Speaker 1: per pound I'm gonna go with Mike Trout, correct a rash.
- 27:34Speaker 1: This is apropos for for what we've been saying, extremely
- 27:37Speaker 1: popular in Far East Russia. There's no way Far East
- 27:42Speaker 1: Russia knows about Mike Trout. Los Angeles, California doesn't know
- 27:45Speaker 1: about Mike Trout Far East Russia. So I'm gonna say, real, Trout,
- 27:50Speaker 1: you are correct. Last prompt for this round that we're
- 27:55Speaker 1: gonna recap the scoring because that was a lightning round.
- 27:57Speaker 1: Unlike Mike Trout, Major League Baseball started showing some mercy
- 28:01Speaker 1: on the opposition recently. A new rule during spring training
- 28:04Speaker 1: allowed pitching teams to invoke a mercy rule ending and
- 28:08Speaker 1: inning early, provided the picture had thrown at least twenty pitches.
- 28:11Speaker 1: As a gambler, please describe a specific instance in any
- 28:15Speaker 1: sport that makes you pine for a mercy rule to
- 28:20Speaker 1: declare your bet a loss. For example, again, Matt Mitchell,
- 28:25Speaker 1: Western New York native Buffalo Bills fam If Josh Allen
- 28:29Speaker 1: gets hurt and Buffalo is trailing, Matt Mitchell would invoke
- 28:32Speaker 1: the mercy rule and tear up his Bills ticket instead
- 28:36Speaker 1: of watching Mitch Troubinsky enter the game. BJ your first
- 28:41Speaker 1: whenever you're betting an underdog in baseball, it's like plus
- 28:43Speaker 1: one seventy five or worse. If that starting pitcher can't
- 28:47Speaker 1: get out of the first inning, I'd say just call
- 28:49Speaker 1: mercy on it, because I don't need to spend the
- 28:51Speaker 1: next three hours watching the Tigers or the Pirates, the
- 28:54Speaker 1: Orioles mineral Leave trying to navigate those endings and try
- 28:57Speaker 1: to keep them in the game. So I'd rather just
- 28:59Speaker 1: call mercy and go do better things with my life.
- 29:02Speaker 1: Practical advice from a professional baseball better a rash. You
- 29:06Speaker 1: know in the Los Angeles Chad we head for the
- 29:09Speaker 1: doors late in the game, or you know, when Kenley
- 29:12Speaker 1: Jansen comes into the game, when Dave Roberts goes to
- 29:15Speaker 1: the bullpen and Kenley Jansen, he used to be great,
- 29:17Speaker 1: but that's a loss. I'm sorry. More often than not.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Unfortunately hopefully he's not the full time closer for the Dodgers,
- 29:23Speaker 1: But mercy rule. When Kenley Jansen comes into the game,
- 29:27Speaker 1: that's a loss for the Dodgers. I'm sorry. So you
- 29:29Speaker 1: want mercy rule on Kenley Jansen in relief, Simon eup. Now,
- 29:33Speaker 1: I'm gonna do something close to home with checks. Hopefully
- 29:35Speaker 1: I'll screw his his number scoring here. I'll do any
- 29:38Speaker 1: time the Bears are down two points and they're bringing
- 29:40Speaker 1: a kicker on when there's less than a minute to go,
- 29:42Speaker 1: don't even need to kick it. Mercy rule other team wins.
- 29:45Speaker 1: I feel like that would be a good answer for
- 29:47Speaker 1: that one. Honestly, that's like a kick in the dick
- 29:49Speaker 1: that just heard so much to think about it. Oh
- 29:53Speaker 1: my god, Simon, of course you're gonna win. You start
- 29:57Speaker 1: the show pranking me. I admire your mer listeness. You
- 30:01Speaker 1: win that. It's time to update the score somehow. As
- 30:04Speaker 1: we head into the grand finale, Simon Hunter, my bff,
- 30:08Speaker 1: the only one I want to actually win. He has
- 30:11Speaker 1: five points. A miraculous run of trout. You might say
- 30:15Speaker 1: it was a spring run trout run in the spring.
- 30:18Speaker 1: I don't know, but he got a lot of trout
- 30:20Speaker 1: answers right. A. Rash and b J are currently tied
- 30:22Speaker 1: up for this is their chance to come back. The
- 30:25Speaker 1: topic is the unbreakable record. How much would you like
- 30:30Speaker 1: to risk? Please text your wager amount to producer Matt Mitchell.
- 30:36Speaker 1: Here we go. The question is the Cincinnati Reds were
- 30:39Speaker 1: a very average team in and Johnny Vandermere was a
- 30:44Speaker 1: very average player, but over the course of two consecutive
- 30:47Speaker 1: games that season, the twenty three year old, nicknamed the
- 30:50Speaker 1: Dutch Master, accomplished defeats so remarkable it's known as the
- 30:54Speaker 1: most unbreakable record in baseball. One Vegas bookmaker said, the
- 30:58Speaker 1: odds of breaking his record our quote a long shot,
- 31:01Speaker 1: so long it's basically incalculable. End quote. What did Johnny
- 31:07Speaker 1: Vandermere do? Text your responses directly to Matt Mitchell. The
- 31:13Speaker 1: question is what did Johnny VanderMeer do? Simon your up? First,
- 31:20Speaker 1: I said it means pitched, you'd be wrong? What did
- 31:24Speaker 1: you wager? All of it? As always, Simon goes all
- 31:28Speaker 1: in because you are You are my bff and your
- 31:31Speaker 1: fucking gambler, and that's why I love you, and that's
- 31:33Speaker 1: why you're the cost of this podcast. But now you've
- 31:35Speaker 1: got zero points? Okay, Rush, what did you wager? And
- 31:39Speaker 1: what is your answer? You're probably gonna get this right, idea,
- 31:41Speaker 1: but most secutive grand slams you are now at zero? Okay, Jay,
- 31:48Speaker 1: what did you wager? What is your answer? Well, now
- 31:50Speaker 1: I'm kind of regretting wagering at all all four points,
- 31:53Speaker 1: but my answer is most matters face without recording it out.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Oh my god, every was at zero. The answer is
- 32:01Speaker 1: he threw two consecutive no hitters. Matt lead us Chad.
- 32:05Speaker 1: In the event of a tie, we invoke the favorite
- 32:09Speaker 1: Thursday Thunderdome Sudden Death challenge, a single numerical question. The
- 32:15Speaker 1: winner will be the closest without going over classic prices,
- 32:19Speaker 1: right rules. Please give me this number the total number
- 32:25Speaker 1: of Mike Trout career Major League home runs plus the
- 32:30Speaker 1: average weight of an adult rainbow trout. Good luck. Okay,
- 32:36Speaker 1: we have a tie of everybody at zero. Because everybody
- 32:39Speaker 1: went all in on the final question and nobody got
- 32:41Speaker 1: it right. You had to text your answers to Matt Mitchell.
- 32:44Speaker 1: What is the combined number the combined total of Mike
- 32:48Speaker 1: Trout home runs in his career and the average weight
- 32:52Speaker 1: of a rainbow trout. That total number in slack, Matt
- 32:55Speaker 1: Mitchell sent me the answer. Can you please give us
- 32:58Speaker 1: Simon Hunter's answer? Simon so two hundred and thirty two
- 33:03Speaker 1: thirty What did a rash Marks say? Three hundred and five?
- 33:08Speaker 1: What did the accountant B. J. Cunningham say? Incredibly, B J.
- 33:14Speaker 1: Cunningham has three oh eight Holy shit. He is a genius.
- 33:21Speaker 1: Mike Trout has three d and two career home runs,
- 33:24Speaker 1: and the average weight of a rainbow Trout is eight pounds.
- 33:29Speaker 1: The answer is three ten. Why you react? And I
- 33:31Speaker 1: thought I got it right on the nose. You came
- 33:34Speaker 1: so simon, what do you think of that? I'm just
- 33:37Speaker 1: a hurd defeat. I can't believe I wager gold. I
- 33:39Speaker 1: blew it. I knew it. I was like, you messed up.
- 33:42Speaker 1: I blame it on you because usually you give us
- 33:44Speaker 1: a hint about what the question is gonna be, but
- 33:46Speaker 1: this time you didn't. You were just like, give me
- 33:47Speaker 1: a number. So I was just like, all right, screw it,
- 33:49Speaker 1: I'll go all five. So I blame you chat of course,
- 33:51Speaker 1: well you should. I'm supposed to be your ally on this.
- 33:54Speaker 1: We're supposed to be teammates. It's like survivor. I'm against
- 33:56Speaker 1: everybody else, and I kind of screwed you. B J. Cunningham,
- 34:00Speaker 1: you have won this week's edition of The Thunderdome, and
- 34:03Speaker 1: for that, we are going to give you a season
- 34:06Speaker 1: supply of baseball games to write about until your fingers
