- 0:00SPEAKER_03: I remember seeing this guy.
- 0:12SPEAKER_02: And it was like a wheel.
- 0:19SPEAKER_02: I was singing that song.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: I remember just going to I have to I have to do this.
- 0:31SPEAKER_03: I can't not provide a wood job.
- 0:33SPEAKER_03: It seems so simple.
- 0:35SPEAKER_03: But if I can provide that, I can buy the lumber for people and get them started with, you know, three to five hundred dollars worth of lumber so you could build your first piece of furniture that you sell for, you know, whatever, and then build five to ten pieces, you know, and then you can make profit enough to teach them to put it back into the company and not spend it all, like to buy some more lumber.
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: So it's like I was trying to teach them how to serve company.
- 1:01SPEAKER_03: But that's what it looks like to have a business as a mission, to go, well, God, what trade do I have?
- 1:06SPEAKER_03: What what skill do I have?
- 1:08SPEAKER_03: And then just saying, Well, here's what I've got.
- 1:10SPEAKER_03: Can you can you use that?
- 1:11SPEAKER_03: It's kind of like the all right.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: Well, welcome back to Be One podcast.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: I was thinking um at some point you stop counting like days and weeks for your baby, you know, and they like they become months and years.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: Like we I feel like we've maybe started to cross that threshold because I don't know what episode we're I think it's like five or six, something like that.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're big time.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: We're big time.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: We maybe a five-week old baby.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: I think you see the five week episode five.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: And we've got some guests today.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: Yes, um, my name's Mark.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: I'm Blake.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: I'm Allie.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: I'm Luke.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 1:50SPEAKER_03: That's because we don't know at all.
- 1:52SPEAKER_03: It's my sweet Brian.
- 1:53SPEAKER_03: We're honored to have her with us.
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: And Luke brought the thunder this weekend at our church, did a great job.
- 1:58SPEAKER_03: Uh, what was the name of the sermon?
- 2:00SPEAKER_03: Live life on mission.
- 2:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 2:01SPEAKER_03: So we just want to talk about that.
- 2:03SPEAKER_03: What what are ways that we live life on mission?
- 2:06SPEAKER_03: I thought there were some great thoughts in there that you had.
- 2:09SPEAKER_03: Um some of it was the idea that we don't go to church, we go from church.
- 2:15SPEAKER_03: And where did you hear that?
- 2:17SPEAKER_03: Was that something that you just picked up somewhere, or is it something you believe?
- 2:19SPEAKER_03: How how did that come about in your heart?
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think I've heard it a lot of times throughout my life that church is not just a place you come to, but it's a place you're sent from.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: And um the thought for this past Sunday was from the Moravian movement in the 1700s, incredible missionary movement, um, where refugees came, um, found refuge in Southeast Germany for four years, and they received and they studied God's word and they spent time together.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: And then after four years, they said, you know what, we've done enough sitting and taking, it's time to go.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Um, and they said, I'm gonna pack everything that I own in a casket and take the gospel wherever God sends me.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: I'm unwilling to die uh because people need to know Jesus.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: And so, hey, we've we've received, I've come, and we want the church to be the same that you come and you receive, but then you go uh and you go and make disciples, because that's what Jesus has called us to do.
- 3:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, something I say a lot when I'm preaching is you know, it's from Matthew 28, where where we always, you know, Jesus sent us on mission to go and make.
- 3:13SPEAKER_03: As He as He's ascending to heaven, this is His last and final command, the great commandment.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: And it's not the great suggestion, right?
- 3:21SPEAKER_03: It's the great commandment to go and make.
- 3:23SPEAKER_03: And so the idea of coming to church means that we sit and take.
- 3:27SPEAKER_03: And a lot of times that's that's our our problem is we, you know, I I've heard it said in America we have a lot of really fat, overweight Christians that have come and sat and they take and they take and they eat, eat, eat, right?
- 3:41SPEAKER_03: And at some point you have to like feed other people, go, go and make.
- 3:45SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 3:45SPEAKER_03: And so the reason why I wanted you here, Ali, is I think you do this really well.
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: Your life life is on mission, always.
- 3:52SPEAKER_03: And so um there's a movement across the country right now that is it's been going on for maybe three to five years.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: It's it's business as mission.
- 4:02SPEAKER_03: Have you guys heard of this BAM, the BAM movement?
- 4:04SPEAKER_03: So there's so many people that want to use their life at as a mission, and whatever they're doing, whatever skills, gifts they have, use it for God's glory.
- 4:13SPEAKER_03: And my wife is an incredible, she would never tell you this or brag about herself, but she's an incredible realtor.
- 4:20SPEAKER_03: And so um I've loved watching the way that has become a ministry for you and the way that you've built friendships and especially well, you talk about your love and passion to want to help like elderly as they're as they're starting to look for a house and the process and how you can help them with that.
- 4:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think well, it's not just the elderly.
- 4:43SPEAKER_05: I just love helping.
- 4:45SPEAKER_05: And so if a way that I can help is taking something that I'm passionate about and I enjoy, I enjoy house hunting, I enjoy finding that treasure in a haystack.
- 4:56SPEAKER_05: And I and I love doing that for people, but getting to hear their stories and getting to hear, you know, it's a sacred place.
- 5:07SPEAKER_05: They're they're moving, a lot of them are moving.
- 5:10SPEAKER_05: I think the reason why the elderly are so tender to me is that this could be their last home.
- 5:14SPEAKER_05: And to them, they know that they're moving closer to their kids or into a house where one of the elderly can manage living a little easier because they can't get around as easy.
- 5:26SPEAKER_05: They can't do the stairs, and just being able to be a place that's calm and present, and I'm not in a hurry.
- 5:35SPEAKER_05: I just want to be with them in this moment because they may never get to do this again.
- 5:39SPEAKER_05: And so I don't know.
- 5:41SPEAKER_03: But it's not just that, there it's such a technologically advanced world now for them to figure out how to sign a document, you know, like electronic or something.
- 5:50SPEAKER_03: Right, like a docu-sign, and they're like, I've never seen never seen this before.
- 5:54SPEAKER_03: I believe it.
- 5:57SPEAKER_05: But the way that you like sometimes it's just getting them connected to the internet.
- 6:01SPEAKER_05: That's the biggest piece.
- 6:02SPEAKER_03: But like I'm I've sent you a bunch of things on MOS.
- 6:05SPEAKER_03: They're like, what's MOS?
- 6:07SPEAKER_03: Right, right, right, right.
- 6:09SPEAKER_03: What's the internet?
- 6:10SPEAKER_05: I don't know my I forgot my password.
- 6:12SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 6:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah, there's a lot of that.
- 6:14SPEAKER_05: But I I love it.
- 6:15SPEAKER_05: I love being present with people.
- 6:17SPEAKER_05: And I think real estate's just one way to be able to do that.
- 6:20SPEAKER_03: But but let's don't downplay it.
- 6:22SPEAKER_03: It's it's a the largest purchase you make in your life.
- 6:25SPEAKER_03: And it's usually your you you take all of your income that they've spent their entire life on, and they're putting that money down, and it's very, very scary.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: It's overwhelming, very stressful, a massive decision.
- 6:36SPEAKER_03: And for your still calm voice to help them in the midst of that moment and pasture them in that moment, it is life on mission.
- 6:46SPEAKER_03: I watch it, I see it in you, and it's beautiful.
- 6:49SPEAKER_03: And I'm really proud of the way you do that.
- 6:50SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 6:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, did you want to say anything else about that?
- 6:54SPEAKER_05: No, I I mean, I think I I just started working outside of the home four or five years ago.
- 7:01SPEAKER_05: So when I think of life on mission for my whole life, for my whole adult life, it was as a stay-at-home mom.
- 7:09SPEAKER_05: And life on mission looked different.
- 7:11SPEAKER_05: Business's mission looked different.
- 7:13SPEAKER_05: My job was motherhood, but that didn't mean disciples weren't being made, and that didn't mean I couldn't make disciples outside of my home or live on mission outside of my home.
- 7:24SPEAKER_03: Okay, preach that, girl.
- 7:26SPEAKER_03: So I think so many women feel like they're I'm not that important.
- 7:29SPEAKER_05: I'm not gonna be just a stay-at-home mom.
- 7:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 7:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: I think we need to squash that right now.
- 7:35SPEAKER_03: It's the most important job on planet earth is to raise a human to become an ambassador for Christ, right?
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 7:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 7:43SPEAKER_03: And so you have done that, I mean, better than about anybody I know.
- 7:48SPEAKER_03: I mean You're a little biased.
- 7:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, my kids are pretty great.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: You might be a lot biased, actually.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: You married one of them, you like her, right?
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: I do.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she's a good job.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: Y'all have done a phenomenal job.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, if if the proof is in the product, I mean, y'all have done a phenomenal job.
- 8:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, if there's this thing called the grace of God.
- 8:06SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: A thousand percent.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:08SPEAKER_03: Covers a lot of things.
- 8:10SPEAKER_03: If there's anything in my life I could brag about, it's the it's the way that the Spirit of God is so present in my children and the way they listen to his voice, right?
- 8:19SPEAKER_03: Uh it's who they've become in Christ to become disciples who are now making disciples, right?
- 8:26SPEAKER_05: But when you think about that, like when I think about me, someone discipled me.
- 8:32SPEAKER_05: A lot of someone's discipled me.
- 8:35SPEAKER_05: So when I think of that verse, go and make disciples, I think a lot of times I've thought, well, that's evangelism.
- 8:43SPEAKER_05: That's going out and finding people who have no knowledge of Christ whatsoever.
- 8:48SPEAKER_05: You gotta go up to a foreign land or mission field, right?
- 8:51SPEAKER_05: But in reality, it's bringing in to your full.
- 8:57SPEAKER_05: I mean, Jesus made disciples by bringing them in, and they walked with him, they ate with him, they did life with him.
- 9:04SPEAKER_05: And so I think as a stay-at-home mom, it was easy, easier because I was home and I could bring younger moms who had younger kids in with their kids, and they we just got to do life together.
- 9:19SPEAKER_05: We pulled at each other's laundry, we made meals together, we meal prepped together.
- 9:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think that's important to say.
- 9:25SPEAKER_03: In our world today, can we just say this?
- 9:27SPEAKER_03: The whole world wants to be an online influencer and a brand ambassador.
- 9:32SPEAKER_03: And they they have to make being Christian super cool.
- 9:35SPEAKER_03: Well, how about we make being a mom super cool?
- 9:38SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 9:39SPEAKER_03: Um being a mom is a brand ambassador for Jesus.
- 9:43SPEAKER_03: And you you're the one of, you know, we're called to be Christ's ambassadors.
- 9:47SPEAKER_03: And so to not just be an ambassador, but to raise up godly, righteous warriors for the kingdom that become ambassadors under our nose in our household.
- 9:58SPEAKER_03: Like what a great life on mission.
- 10:01SPEAKER_03: Like, right?
- 10:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 10:02SPEAKER_03: Let's make that cool.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: I think about um you're saying you invite other moms into the process.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: First Thessalonians 2, um, I think it is, is where Paul says, We loved you so much that we didn't just share the gospel with you, but we shared our lives.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: Something along those lines.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: And so that's what living life on mission really is.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Of course, the gospel has to be shared.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: But um a big part of it is not just words and then see you later.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: It's hey, here's the gospel and let me live it out.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: Let me show you what it looks like to be a follower of Jesus who is making disciples.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: Um because that's the command, actually, in the Great Commission.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: If you look at the the structure of a sentence, so we don't have to dive into it.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: Um, go is not the command, make disciples is.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: So it's good.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: Go and make.
- 10:43SPEAKER_03: It's not go to church.
- 10:45SPEAKER_03: It's go and you're you're making a product and it's a product that looks like Christ because you've become like Christ.
- 10:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 10:52SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 10:52SPEAKER_03: It's the overflow of us becoming like him.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: So therefore, everyone around us starts to grow into becoming like him as well.
- 11:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 11:01SPEAKER_03: And that's the beauty, right?
- 11:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 11:03SPEAKER_03: So what are some ways, Mark, that you live your life on mission?
- 11:08SPEAKER_03: Some ways like you know, you're a worship leader.
- 11:11SPEAKER_03: Do you feel like you get to create a culture around you that is helping raise up other worship leaders?
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think for me, um, just thinking about what we were just talking about.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think it's let's make mom uh cool again.
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: Or is that what you just said?
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: Let's make make me great again, Mafamawa.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: Um I don't know.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: It's striking less man less.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: Um, but is just to um whatever's in front of you.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm trying to um be present and be obedient and listen to whatever the calling is.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: And so if it's to stop and to hey, you need to stop and pause and give um so and so a call to hear, I mean they looked like they were having a hard day.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: Um ask them some questions.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: Um if it is um to pause and to read scripture, if it's to pause and to write a song, um, it's just being obedient in the moment.
- 12:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:16SPEAKER_03: I love that you've started doing that.
- 12:18SPEAKER_03: You've started writing songs and words are starting to come out of you, music's coming out of you, and you're letting it pour out of you, and you're doing that online.
- 12:25SPEAKER_03: And uh the way that you're creating a culture to to do that, right?
- 12:28SPEAKER_03: We just had one of our one of our staff members, Chris Wall, his son wrote a song.
- 12:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, how old is he?
- 12:35SPEAKER_03: Oh, seven.
- 12:35SPEAKER_03: Seven years old.
- 12:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 12:37SPEAKER_03: And I I love the heart behind creating a culture that's creating new sounds and songs of joy that's coming from our heart to the king.
- 12:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 12:45SPEAKER_03: And I think that's, you know, let's talk about some words that are big, scary words.
- 12:50SPEAKER_03: The word missionary, yeah, right?
- 12:52SPEAKER_03: The word apostle.
- 12:54SPEAKER_03: You know what the word apostle actually means in Greek?
- 12:57SPEAKER_03: It means sent one.
- 12:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 12:59SPEAKER_03: So can I ask you, are have you been sent by God?
- 13:02SPEAKER_03: Have you been sent by God?
- 13:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yes, yeah.
- 13:05SPEAKER_03: So you so would you say I'm an apostle?
- 13:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:08SPEAKER_03: Feels weird to say, right?
- 13:10SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 13:11SPEAKER_03: Apostle Alley.
- 13:11SPEAKER_03: Apostle Ally.
- 13:13SPEAKER_03: But that's the reality.
- 13:15SPEAKER_03: And the same with saying missionary.
- 13:16SPEAKER_03: Oh, I'm not I'm not a missionary.
- 13:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:18SPEAKER_03: I what I do is not that significant.
- 13:20SPEAKER_03: I think everybody feels that way.
- 13:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 13:23SPEAKER_03: You as a mom, right?
- 13:24SPEAKER_05: I think an evangelist is scary to me.
- 13:26SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 13:26SPEAKER_05: Because that feels like I've got to go out and hand out tracts and I've got to ask people point blank without them knowing that I care about them.
- 13:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 13:34SPEAKER_05: And that's just not the way I'm wired.
- 13:36SPEAKER_05: And so to bring people in and disciple them into being a follower of Jesus feels a lot less scary.
- 13:44SPEAKER_03: We we all downplay our own lives and gifts, and we make it seem like what we have is insignificant.
- 13:53SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 13:54SPEAKER_03: And so, can I tell you a story?
- 13:57SPEAKER_03: Um, there was a season in my life where I I just wanted to help people learn trades.
- 14:04SPEAKER_03: I was like, I I felt this like like and here's how it happened.
- 14:09SPEAKER_03: I was in uh we we had some missionaries come from uh Africa and we let them stay at our house.
- 14:17SPEAKER_03: And so my sweet wife made them their favorite meal, and they were blown away by that.
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: So we were sitting around at that night, and there's this kid that's probably 14.
- 14:27SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 14:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, what was his name?
- 14:28SPEAKER_03: Nash.
- 14:29SPEAKER_03: And Nash said, I wrote down a piece of paper, a list of um things that I want to buy at Home Depot.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: And I was like, What?
- 14:38SPEAKER_03: You want to buy some stuff at Home Depot?
- 14:41SPEAKER_03: Well, I mean, I first thought was well, I'm gonna buy those.
- 14:44SPEAKER_05: I think he actually went to Home Depot that day before they came to dinner, and he was like, I've been there for four hours and I've been narrowing it down to five things.
- 14:53SPEAKER_05: I think if I just had these five things, like he worked really hard to just find five things here.
- 14:59SPEAKER_03: Everything that he had on the list, I went out to my shop and I had two of every one of those a circular saw, a jigsaw, a sander.
- 15:08SPEAKER_03: I could cry.
- 15:09SPEAKER_03: So I put it all in this tote.
- 15:11SPEAKER_03: Doug taped it.
- 15:12SPEAKER_03: Doug taped the thing, and he brought that thing back to Africa.
- 15:16SPEAKER_03: And so that's the beginning of what was the very start of my nonprofit called Gifted Global.
- 15:23SPEAKER_03: And it was the beginning of God showing me you need to provide tools for people that can't buy a drill.
- 15:30SPEAKER_03: And so we actually got to go to Africa as a family in 2014.
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: All six of us raised enough money to go.
- 15:36SPEAKER_05: Nash had taken the circular saw and turned it upside down, right?
- 15:42SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 15:42SPEAKER_05: And made a table saw out of it.
- 15:44SPEAKER_03: He said it was a piece of it.
- 15:46SPEAKER_03: It was so thick.
- 15:49SPEAKER_03: He cut the cord and turned the cord into a switch underneath this table.
- 15:53SPEAKER_03: The table was sitting on four chairs, and he was sending things through this.
- 15:57SPEAKER_03: It was like a blade sticking out of a piece of wood.
- 16:00SPEAKER_03: Very dangerous.
- 16:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 16:01SPEAKER_03: And and yet he was using it as a table saw, and I was like, Nashville, I'm gonna buy you some about that.
- 16:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 16:06SPEAKER_03: And so I I think we spent like$12,000 on our first on our first wood shop there in Hurricane.
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: We did it.
- 16:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we we asked people to help us raise money.
- 16:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 16:16SPEAKER_03: And so, but but it was a fully functioning wood shop that is still in work to today in Nakuru, Africa, in this orphanage of about 250 kids, and it's creating income for that orphanage.
- 16:30SPEAKER_03: And Nash has his own wood business, and he calls me all the time and texts me, and like, hey, I need a new bandsaw or I need a new blade or all this stuff.
- 16:38SPEAKER_03: And so it's just beautiful because all of us was like, I don't, I don't, that's really nothing, right?
- 16:44SPEAKER_03: For for a lot of people, they're like, I don't know how to teach someone how to use a table saw, use a circular saw.
- 16:52SPEAKER_03: But for me, it's like I've done it since I was a boy.
- 16:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 16:54SPEAKER_03: And so for me to get the privilege to do that, and now I think we've had the privilege to put like 30 wood shops, metal shops, sewing shops all over the world because of that nonprofit that was launched.
- 17:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:07SPEAKER_03: But I think all of us have this tendency to go, what I've got's not that big of a deal.
- 17:11SPEAKER_03: It's not that important.
- 17:12SPEAKER_03: Whatever.
- 17:13SPEAKER_03: It's just me teaching people how to sew, like me teaching people how to cook.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think about like Sherry Henderson, you know, who just she loves to help provide meals.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: And so she started a meal ministry here.
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: I think about Jeff Ackerley, who's an amazing gardener and he owns the garden.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: I think about Rick and Susan Kremmering, who have have they have a passion for grandparenting and they want to help grandparents grow in their faith, you know.
- 17:43SPEAKER_03: And help raise their kids in their faith.
- 17:44SPEAKER_03: And the grandkids.
- 17:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:45SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 17:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: I mean, the so there's people in this house that are living their life on mission, and it's just stuff that they're maybe the Lord is maybe they're good at.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: Maybe it's a trade that they and they want to help people, you know, learn how to use skills.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: Um, or it might just be a passion that or a season in their life, you know.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: But I think that's the thing is maybe just um I, you know, I think about the One for Life group, you know, they wanted, Lord, would you put a burden on our heart, you know, and they abort the life, you know, the sanctity of life was put on their heart.
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: And they started a mission of, hey, we're gonna try to influence people that are wrestling with the decision of abortion to choose life.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: Or Luke.
- 18:31SPEAKER_03: I think of the season that you were a baseball coach.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, using baseball as a ministry, or even I was sitting here thinking, um, this is on a church podcast, but I was a bartender before uh when I lived in Florida.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: But how many conversations did you have?
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: One of my favorite ministries that I ever got to do, it wasn't a calling to be a bartender.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: It wasn't because I was great at it.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: It was I needed some extra cash and I worked some night shifts and um the conversations that I had from behind a bar with somebody who would never step foot in the church.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: I'm telling you that the tears that were poured out.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: Um I prayed for people as their bartender.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: I literally bought Bibles and handed them out to be.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: Oh gosh.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: It was beer line, but you know, um pouring, you know, beer and and sharing the gospel and praying with people and beer and the Bible.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: Um and ended up having coworkers who were bartenders far from God, ended up at church with me because I was shared the gospel and um sharing lives of a coworker who lost a parent and I have uh an experience of losing my dad.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: Um, and was just able to sit with them and process and talk through um and share the gospel and see the way that God has worked through not necessarily a calling, even.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: Uh hey, this is a season of my life.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: I don't even really love it, but this is where God has placed me.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: And so I'm gonna live my life on mission as a baseball coach, as a bartender, um, busting tables at a restaurant, wherever God may have you, is the place that I think this weekend we talked about, hey, you don't have to go to the other side of the world.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: God might call you to, but you just have to go through the world that God's placed you in right now, paying attention.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 20:12SPEAKER_03: In fact, let me say that.
- 20:13SPEAKER_03: Let me I think everybody listening needs to hear this thought.
- 20:17SPEAKER_03: The question is not, do you have a mission?
- 20:22SPEAKER_03: The question is, are you paying attention to the mission God's already given you?
- 20:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:27SPEAKER_03: That's good.
- 20:28SPEAKER_03: Like every conversation.
- 20:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:30SPEAKER_03: Every person that's already placed in your we we want to make it insignificant.
- 20:34SPEAKER_03: It's no big deal that I have this job.
- 20:36SPEAKER_03: No, what if God strategically placed you exactly where you're at?
- 20:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:42SPEAKER_03: And in the exact, you know, we just met with a sweet lady that's losing her husband.
- 20:49SPEAKER_03: And she she just feels like her she's lost purpose, right?
- 20:52SPEAKER_03: But yet she's been at all these places, you know, in hospice and hospitals, and she's she's used all of those places as a place to talk about what God's done in her life.
- 21:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:05SPEAKER_03: And even though she feels this immense pain and grief and loss in the midst of that, she in her suffering, she's still on mission.
- 21:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:12SPEAKER_03: And I think we we don't pay attention to the fact that the ordinary, the ordinary things in our life could possibly be a holy assignment that's given to us from God.
- 21:22SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: I think that's good.
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: I think the danger in the world we live in is seeing other people's assignments, and yes.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: Maybe maybe it makes ours seem insignificant, or we maybe get jealous of theirs, you know, but I think that when you see other people's best life, you know, on social media, that might be a tendency, you know.
- 21:45SPEAKER_03: I think people probably look at the lead pastors, and we get that a lot.
- 21:50SPEAKER_03: Like, well, I'm not I'm not Blake and Halley, I'm not that special, you know.
- 21:53SPEAKER_03: I'm not I'm not I'm not doing that.
- 21:54SPEAKER_03: But can I just say something?
- 21:56SPEAKER_03: What if, what if when the Bible talks about that every person is a royal holy nation or a royal priesthood of believers, right?
- 22:08SPEAKER_03: What what if that once you receive Christ and the Holy Spirit's alive inside of you, that's the moment that you're no longer sitting, but you're you're being sent.
- 22:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:20SPEAKER_03: And that's when you become an apostle, a missionary, evangelist, right?
- 22:23SPEAKER_03: A shepherd, a teacher, right?
- 22:24SPEAKER_03: All of those, the apest, apostle, prophet, evangelist, shepherd, teachers, those are all assignments given to the bride of Christ.
- 22:31SPEAKER_03: That the only thing that you have to have is the Spirit of God alive inside of you.
- 22:35SPEAKER_03: So if the Spirit of God is alive inside of you, I'm fixing to start preaching, you are a missionary for God, right?
- 22:41SPEAKER_03: Come on.
- 22:42SPEAKER_03: And so can I say it like this?
- 22:43SPEAKER_03: Charles Spurgeon says, every Christian is either a missionary or an impostor.
- 22:50SPEAKER_03: That's heavy.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: Is it because you're an impostor, Mark?
- 22:54SPEAKER_03: Um probably so.
- 22:56SPEAKER_05: I don't think so.
- 22:58SPEAKER_03: So if I'm not a missionary, I'm an impostor.
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: That's a hard one to swallow.
- 23:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 23:03SPEAKER_03: That's the king of preachers.
- 23:04SPEAKER_03: It's Purgeon.
- 23:04SPEAKER_03: I mean, so so how do I look at my life and go, if I'm not being on mission, if my life is not on mission, am I really an imposter?
- 23:13SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 23:14SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 23:14SPEAKER_03: And I started this series and I talked about like, if you've never caught a fish, can you really call yourself a fisherman?
- 23:19SPEAKER_03: It's that same kind of thinking.
- 23:21SPEAKER_03: It's like, well then, okay, God, I need to take evaluation.
- 23:27SPEAKER_03: What have I done this week, this last month, in my neighborhood with my workers, my children?
- 23:33SPEAKER_03: God, where am I on mission?
- 23:35SPEAKER_03: If I'm not, Lord, am I am I an apostor?
- 23:39SPEAKER_03: Am I just faking it?
- 23:40SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 23:40SPEAKER_03: Am I just a hypocrite?
- 23:42SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 23:42SPEAKER_03: And so I'm gonna challenge us online.
- 23:44SPEAKER_03: Anyone that's listening, where are some places in your life that you can ask God, give me a mission?
- 23:51SPEAKER_03: I I want to be on mission.
- 23:53SPEAKER_03: Show me my mission.
- 23:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, right?
- 23:55SPEAKER_03: Put me on mission.
- 23:57SPEAKER_03: Because God, okay, I'm an apostle, I'm a missionary, I'm an evangelist, say all the things that seem like real big theological terms, but really it's just I'm not gonna sit and take, I'm gonna go and make.
- 24:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 24:07SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 24:08SPEAKER_03: And so how are we doing that?
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think it's a prayer that God always answers.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: You know, I think sometimes there are prayers that we that we pray and we ask, like, God, I'm asking for this thing, and it feels like the answer might be no.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: If you ask, God, will you give me uh an opportunity to show your love to people around me?
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: He's going to.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: Every time there are gonna be opportunities, somebody's gonna get a flat tire on the side of the road, and you're gonna have to make the decision, am I gonna go and show them the love of Christ?
- 24:31SPEAKER_00: Um, there's gonna be somebody who stops in the grocery store and you may not be ready, but they're gonna share their life story, and then the Lord's gonna prompt you, hey, would you be willing to pray for this person?
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: Um and you just have to be willing.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: If if you pray that prayer, just know God's gonna answer that one.
- 24:45SPEAKER_05: That happened to me on Monday.
- 24:47SPEAKER_05: Oh, really?
- 24:48SPEAKER_05: I was in the grocery store, I had 45 minutes, and I saw somebody, and and I just knew I needed to ask them, Are you good?
- 24:57SPEAKER_05: And I knew like I have a really long list and I've got somewhere I have to be.
- 25:02SPEAKER_05: But I heard a pastor say, be interruptible.
- 25:05SPEAKER_05: So am I interruptible right now, Lord?
- 25:08SPEAKER_05: You can pause time.
- 25:10SPEAKER_05: And and it happened, and and he just started sharing, and it was it was that wrestling match of it's not about me.
- 25:18SPEAKER_05: And this is this is where I'm supposed to be right now.
- 25:22SPEAKER_05: We ran into each other, and I need to be interruptible.
- 25:27SPEAKER_03: You know, when I when we went to Africa to put that wood shop in, I remember d driving and I looked over, and there was this young man that I just thought, I'm so proud of you, and you're so ambitious.
- 25:42SPEAKER_03: Because he had this cart that he was trying to push this load of wood up a hill.
- 25:47SPEAKER_03: And at the time we were listening to this Sarah Groves song.
- 25:50SPEAKER_03: It's called I Saw What I Saw.
- 25:52SPEAKER_03: It's a powerful song about going and seeing the the adverse poverty and the challenge of having nothing and trying to live life in the midst of that.
- 26:03SPEAKER_03: And so this part of the song says, Um, your courage asks me, What am I afraid of?
- 26:09SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 26:09SPEAKER_03: And your courage asks me, What am I made of?
- 26:13SPEAKER_03: And I remember hearing that, and that was really the launch of like, okay, God, I I see your courage in that young man, the tenacity to push that thing up a hill.
- 26:24SPEAKER_03: And I thought, if if I could get him, you know, a tool that'll help him with that, right?
- 26:29SPEAKER_03: Well, the courage asks me, what am I afraid of?
- 26:31SPEAKER_03: And what am I made of?
- 26:32SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, okay, God, I'm gonna do this, I'm gonna start this nonprofit, I'm gonna try.
- 26:38SPEAKER_03: And so all of us probably are like, it's nothing.
- 26:42SPEAKER_03: But I remember just going, okay, I've seen what I've seen, and now I have to respond to this calling on my life that I've got to, I've got to go and do the thing.
- 26:52SPEAKER_03: And so that's what it looks like to go and make.
- 26:55SPEAKER_03: It's this, you know, trust and obey.
- 26:58SPEAKER_03: There's no other way.
- 26:59SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna trust God.
- 27:00SPEAKER_03: I don't know how this money's gonna come.
- 27:01SPEAKER_03: I don't know how, I don't know how how to start a nonprofit.
- 27:04SPEAKER_03: I don't know, you know, there's so many unknowns.
- 27:06SPEAKER_03: And so um it's scary to think, well, God, what gifts and talents, abilities are you gonna use in my?
- 27:12SPEAKER_03: Because it's scary to say, oh, God, use me, you know, send me.
- 27:16SPEAKER_03: Here am I, God, send me.
- 27:18SPEAKER_03: And but yet at the same time, when you pray that dangerous prayer, the Lord will blow you away if you step out in obedience, right?
- 27:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, way far and beyond you would ever dream or imagine.
- 27:28SPEAKER_03: And so that's the best part of being a believer.
- 27:31SPEAKER_03: Listen to the Holy Spirit and doing what he says.
- 27:34SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 27:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 27:35SPEAKER_03: So I think all of us can think about ways like, okay, uh, I'll be an influencer, I'll be a brand ambassador, I'll I'll go out and make um, you know, a difference.
- 27:47SPEAKER_03: Uh Lord, show me where you can use my gifts, talents, and abilities, and he'll answer that.
- 27:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 27:53SPEAKER_03: So get ready, right?
- 27:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 27:55SPEAKER_03: Did you guys have anything else you wanted to add?
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: I mean, uh as you're talking, one, I was wondering, did you get out and help the gap with driving?
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: That guy looks like a dime.
- 28:07SPEAKER_01: That inspires me.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, inspired me.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: I'm taking sure like driving, listening to this song Crying, Sarah Grows, and all the things.
- 28:19SPEAKER_05: You're such a jerk.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was just wondering, that's good though.
- 28:25SPEAKER_03: Convicted, doing something about that, but not right now.
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: Later.
- 28:29SPEAKER_03: Later.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: But I was it made me think, you know.
- 28:33SPEAKER_01: I was the imposter.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: No.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: Hey, um, we've all been there.
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: Um but I like I've got a truck, you know.
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: Like what if e even as simple as that.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: I've got legs that work.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: I can help carry something up the stairs, you know.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: Even it doesn't have to be you know starting a nonprofit.
- 28:51SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you don't have to buy you know 30 wood shops for something.
- 28:55SPEAKER_01: Like it can start right today.
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: Your neighbor needs help bringing the groceries in, you know.
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: Or maybe it's somebody in the Sam's parking lot that has is having trouble unloading something.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: We we were um leaving Sam's one day.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: This was a couple weeks ago, and there was a an older gentleman that was he was having trouble getting something out of his basket, and and I I said uh my son was in there.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: I said, Caleb, go.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: I didn't see I was the imposter.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: I said, You Caleb, go help the man, you know.
- 29:24SPEAKER_04: And so it's what dad's dude.
- 29:26SPEAKER_04: Right, right, right.
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm driving.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: I can't help.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: But you know, it could be as simple as that, you know, just seeing just being aware and seeing the needs around, you know.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think you do that so well, Mark.
- 29:37SPEAKER_00: I think about the story a couple years ago of a guy in our community um who needed to get up and down the stairs from a wheelchair, and you, along with hundreds of other people in our community, got him up and down the stairs every single day, multiple times a day.
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: So you do that really well.
- 29:52SPEAKER_03: Well, nice.
- 29:53SPEAKER_03: You know, there's this book, it's an old book, this will date me.
- 29:56SPEAKER_03: It's a book called Roaring Lands.
- 29:59SPEAKER_03: And the idea of the book is at some point we have to stop being, we have to get out of the salt shaker.
- 30:05SPEAKER_03: Like if you think of the culture as a piece of meat, and then around that piece of meat is all these different places outside of the culture, like you know, in like a subcultures that we create that are places for Christians, and that's at church.
- 30:22SPEAKER_03: We have our own Christian like music, we have our own Christian books, right?
- 30:28SPEAKER_03: And so think of all of those like around the culture as separate salt shakers, and and yet Jesus told us, you are the salt of the earth.
- 30:39SPEAKER_03: And at some point, you have to get out of the stinking salt shaker and be comfortable in that and actually, you know, flavor the culture.
- 30:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 30:47SPEAKER_03: Now, there's some Christians that pour out the whole thing, it's too much salt, right?
- 30:52SPEAKER_03: It's like it's too salty, right?
- 30:54SPEAKER_03: I it's too much truth, or right.
- 30:56SPEAKER_03: So there's this, there's this balance of truth and grace.
- 30:58SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah, it's like seasoned with you, you know, truth and overflowing with grace.
- 31:03SPEAKER_03: And so that that's where I think a lot of people aren't very good, is like, how do I live my life on on mission?
- 31:10SPEAKER_03: How do I become, you know, Jesus, when he was speaking in John 20, he said, as the Father has sent me, I am sending you.
- 31:19SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 31:20SPEAKER_03: That one's huge.
- 31:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like I think we don't think of ourselves as, well, God came here as a sent one to create sent ones.
- 31:29SPEAKER_03: And so we are here to be sent by God to go and to make.
- 31:34SPEAKER_03: So I feel convicted.
- 31:35SPEAKER_03: Like, Lord, show me, show us, show whoever's listening right now, ask the Father, Lord, how can I be salt?
- 31:43SPEAKER_03: How can I be light on this place that's void of, you know, it's dark and it's doesn't have flavor.
- 31:50SPEAKER_03: How can I show the world what it looks like?
- 31:52SPEAKER_03: Because the whole world is hungry for, you know what?
- 31:54SPEAKER_03: Peace, joy, love, patience.
- 31:57SPEAKER_03: These are the things that the culture doesn't have.
- 31:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 32:00SPEAKER_03: And so when we season that on the culture, people are like, that's weird.
- 32:03SPEAKER_03: I I need that in my life.
- 32:05SPEAKER_03: I don't know what that is, but their family, it's so alive.
- 32:08SPEAKER_03: It's the Spirit of God alive in your life, and it's saying, God, show me how I can be on mission.
- 32:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and He'll do it.
- 32:14SPEAKER_03: Get ready, buckle up, right?
- 32:16SPEAKER_01: He'll send you out.
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I've heard it asked, you know, if this place didn't exist tomorrow, would the community realize it?
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: You know, are we making an impact in the community?
- 32:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 32:30SPEAKER_03: You know, I I think a better analogy of the church is not that the church is a battleship.
- 32:37SPEAKER_03: The church is actually a carrier.
- 32:40SPEAKER_03: And so the battleships come to our church, right?
- 32:43SPEAKER_03: And they land on the carrier.
- 32:45SPEAKER_03: We fill them up with gas on Sunday.
- 32:46SPEAKER_03: Why?
- 32:47SPEAKER_03: So they can be sent from here to go be the battleship, right?
- 32:50SPEAKER_03: The church isn't the battleship.
- 32:51SPEAKER_03: The church is the place for the battleship to come and land, to be filled up and go fight in the world, right?
- 32:56SPEAKER_03: And so we encourage, we build them up, we help them be edified, and then we send them out, right?
- 33:02SPEAKER_03: That's our job.
- 33:03SPEAKER_03: And so coming to church isn't the mission.
- 33:05SPEAKER_03: It it certainly people's lives are changed here, right?
- 33:08SPEAKER_03: And and people are baptized, but it's why?
- 33:10SPEAKER_03: Why?
- 33:11SPEAKER_03: And it's to be sent out to go and make disciples, right?
- 33:14SPEAKER_03: And so that's why everyone matters, and and there's always room for one more because the mission isn't here, it's the mission's out there.
- 33:21SPEAKER_03: And so are we sending people out into the culture to be salt and life?
- 33:25SPEAKER_05: So when Jesus said, as the Father has sent me, so am I sending you.
- 33:31SPEAKER_05: That you, I'm not a theologian, you can correct me, but I'm pretty sure it's plural, like y'all.
- 33:37SPEAKER_05: I'm sending y'all.
- 33:38SPEAKER_05: And he's actually saying I'm sending all y'all.
- 33:43SPEAKER_05: Georgia Guru.
- 33:44SPEAKER_05: Just to circle back to where we started, but that's that's where that saying, and I can't remember what yours is, the one I always heard growing up was we've gathered.
- 33:52SPEAKER_05: This is what the pastor would say on Sunday.
- 33:54SPEAKER_05: We've gathered, and now we scatter.
- 33:56SPEAKER_05: That's the that's the carrier.
- 34:00SPEAKER_05: Well said.
- 34:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 34:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 34:02SPEAKER_05: So send us out.
- 34:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:04SPEAKER_03: So all y'all.
- 34:06SPEAKER_03: All y'all.
- 34:06SPEAKER_03: All y'all suckers.
- 34:08SPEAKER_03: Um, can I say something?
- 34:10SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 34:11SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 34:12SPEAKER_05: You're gonna say it anyway.
- 34:14SPEAKER_03: Um what if where you're at right now, the life you've been given right now, the family you have right now, the job you have, you know, the finances you have, the house you have, the car you have, what if all of that is part of God's plan and it's not an accident?
- 34:35SPEAKER_03: And and if that's true, God didn't accidentally with his sovereignty and his authority and his power place us in the current life we have, then God, how can I be more strategic with the mission that you've given me?
- 34:53SPEAKER_03: Put me on mission, God.
- 34:54SPEAKER_03: It's not by accident that I'm right where I'm at.
- 34:57SPEAKER_03: So, God, put me on mission.
- 34:59SPEAKER_03: You guys mind if I pray?
- 35:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 35:01SPEAKER_03: Any other thoughts?
- 35:02SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 35:02SPEAKER_03: Father, we repent of the times that we miss it, that we are an imposter, we're we're not a good example, we're not an ambassador, we don't see ourselves as that significant.
- 35:14SPEAKER_03: And we just pray, Lord, you would teach us to live our lives on mission for you, for your glory, for your kingdom, and may we forcefully advance the gospel.
- 35:24SPEAKER_03: May we be people who give hope in the midst of despair.
- 35:29SPEAKER_03: May we be a people who bring light that dissipates the darkness.
- 35:34SPEAKER_03: May we be people that put salt on a culture that's desperate for some seasoning of Jesus.
- 35:40SPEAKER_03: And so, Father, may we show the world what you're like by the way we live.
- 35:46SPEAKER_03: We love you, God.
- 35:47SPEAKER_03: It's in your name we pray.
