Latest / Conversations: Special Guests with Preston Scott / London Offers A Glimpse of New York City's Potential Future ... It's Not Good
Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Indeed, you are listening to the music that signals the
- 0:09Speaker 1: beginning of an hour on the Morning Show with Preston
- 0:12Speaker 1: Scott In Preston, he is Jose. It is Show fifty
- 0:16Speaker 1: four eleven, and I waste no time bringing on our
- 0:20Speaker 1: next guest, Zack Smith, familiar voice Heritage Foundation. Zach, how
- 0:25Speaker 1: are you, sir?
- 0:27Speaker 2: I'm doing well. Thanks for having me on the show
- 0:29Speaker 2: this morning.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Of course, a week ago you wrote a piece titled
- 0:33Speaker 1: look to London for a Glimpse of New York City's future.
- 0:37Speaker 1: This is all been precipitated by Zoran Mamdani. Tell everybody who.
- 0:46Speaker 2: He is, Yeah, Zorn Mamdani. He is the leading candidate
- 0:51Speaker 2: to be New York City's next mayor. He recently won
- 0:54Speaker 2: the Democratic primary race. Of course, a heritage we do policy,
- 0:59Speaker 2: not politics. But what I did I looked at Zorn
- 1:03Speaker 2: mam Donnie's policies and it's not an exaggeration to say,
- 1:06Speaker 2: Preston that he is pushing hardcore Marxist policies in a
- 1:12Speaker 2: host of areas, and everything from policing and public safety,
- 1:15Speaker 2: which I write a lot about, to economics and housings.
- 1:18Speaker 2: He's proposing to start government run grocery stores. It's an
- 1:23Speaker 2: absolute horror show in terms of the policies he's putting forward.
- 1:28Speaker 2: And as a point out my piece, if we look
- 1:30Speaker 2: across the Atlantic Ocean to London, where many of these
- 1:33Speaker 2: same socialist type policies have already been implemented, it's been
- 1:38Speaker 2: an abject failure that I've led to more suffering from
- 1:41Speaker 2: the citizens there, and I think we could expect more
- 1:43Speaker 2: of the same in New York City if mom Donnie
- 1:46Speaker 2: is elected and able to implement his policies as well.
- 1:50Speaker 1: I want to just take a step backwards for a moment,
- 1:54Speaker 1: because I feel as though there's a lot of confusion.
- 1:58Speaker 1: We hear socialists, Marxist, Donald Trump says communist. Is there
- 2:05Speaker 1: really a difference.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Well, I would say they're all problemized ideology, sure, with
- 2:12Speaker 2: policies that don't work, that fundamentally don't work. But there
- 2:16Speaker 2: is a difference in terms of how far each is
- 2:19Speaker 2: willing to go with their policies. And certainly I think
- 2:23Speaker 2: if you look back to someone who identifies as a communist. Now,
- 2:27Speaker 2: I don't know that mom Donnie would self identify as
- 2:29Speaker 2: a communist, although I would say if you look at
- 2:33Speaker 2: what he has posted on his X feed previously. I
- 2:37Speaker 2: think he is certainly closer to that communist end of
- 2:40Speaker 2: the line, and what it means is typically in terms
- 2:43Speaker 2: of how far they're willing to go in terms of
- 2:47Speaker 2: undermining a basic capitalist concepts, how far they're willing to
- 2:52Speaker 2: redistribute property and wealth through taxation and other means as well.
- 2:57Speaker 2: And look, I think what's really rebiliant revealing Preston is
- 3:01Speaker 2: Mom Donnie, you know, four or five years ago, tweeted
- 3:05Speaker 2: a well known phrase that Karl Marx himself coined is
- 3:09Speaker 2: something to the effect of everyone according to their ability,
- 3:12Speaker 2: everyone according to their need. And anyone who's familiar with
- 3:16Speaker 2: that knows that phrase or some version of it came
- 3:20Speaker 2: directly from Karl Marx himself to push his new communist ideology.
- 3:25Speaker 2: So look, this is problematic stuff from top to bottom,
- 3:29Speaker 2: and nothing good for New York City or from our
- 3:31Speaker 2: country will come from it if Mom Donnie is able
- 3:35Speaker 2: to implement these policies.
- 3:37Speaker 1: I want to do a little deeper dive into what's
- 3:39Speaker 1: gone on in London. But before we do that, and
- 3:42Speaker 1: before the break, let me just ask you how problematic
- 3:46Speaker 1: is this guy's candidacy for the ranking members of the
- 3:51Speaker 1: Democrat Party, not just in New York but congressionally well.
- 3:57Speaker 2: I think it's very problematic. Look, even some Congression leaders
- 4:00Speaker 2: have had to condemn certain of his policies. In addition
- 4:04Speaker 2: to his problematic economic policies, he's also adopted many anti
- 4:09Speaker 2: Semitic policies as well. He's refused to condemn anti Semitic
- 4:13Speaker 2: slogans like Globalized in Timbada, other chants that have basically
- 4:23Speaker 2: condemned Israel for their actions in Gaza, and so this
- 4:26Speaker 2: has created a very real problem for Democratic candidates and
- 4:30Speaker 2: officeholders nationwide. But again, just from a policy perspective, Preston,
- 4:36Speaker 2: I think we should all be horrified at some of
- 4:38Speaker 2: what he's proposing.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Zach Smith with me from the Heritage Foundation, we're looking
- 4:46Speaker 1: at what is coming to New York City should they
- 4:49Speaker 1: go ahead and elect Zoron Mamdani as their next mayor.
- 4:54Speaker 1: And he compares what it could look like by looking
- 4:59Speaker 1: at what it does look like right now in London.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Paint the picture in London, who the mayor is and
- 5:06Speaker 1: how in the world did this guy get elected and
- 5:08Speaker 1: what's he done.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not a good situation in London. It's the
- 5:12Speaker 2: current mayor is someone named Sadique Khan. He's a socialist
- 5:17Speaker 2: as well, not quite as far left as Zorroon Mamdani,
- 5:23Speaker 2: but certainly he embraces socialists of quasi Marxist type policies.
- 5:27Speaker 2: And if you look at what's happened in London since
- 5:29Speaker 2: he's been elected, you've seen crime, sore, violent crime, stuff,
- 5:32Speaker 2: shoplifting are all up. It's public housing sector in London
- 5:36Speaker 2: is abysmal. The private rental sector. He's taken efforts to
- 5:40Speaker 2: try to shrink that intentionally, and so as a result,
- 5:43Speaker 2: you're seeing a surge in homelessness. He's also helped to
- 5:47Speaker 2: weaponize London police to monitor online speech to enforce kind
- 5:52Speaker 2: of the liberal socialist orthodoxy. I think we've all probably
- 5:56Speaker 2: seen pictures of people in the United Kingdom, in London,
- 6:00Speaker 2: specifically being arrested for praying silently outside of abortion clinics,
- 6:04Speaker 2: for being interrogated about posts they've made on social media.
- 6:07Speaker 2: He's certainly been supportive of those efforts as well, and
- 6:11Speaker 2: unfortunately he's also helped to stoke some of the same
- 6:15Speaker 2: anti Semitic type rhetoric that we've seen Mamdani helped to
- 6:19Speaker 2: stoke as well, and I'll give one example that I
- 6:22Speaker 2: talk about in my piece in twenty twenty three, on
- 6:26Speaker 2: our Mystic Day, which is the UK's equivalent of Veterans Day,
- 6:29Speaker 2: essentially three hundred thousand pro Palestinian demonstrators disrupted the ceremonies
- 6:36Speaker 2: the other solemn events that were taking that day, and
- 6:40Speaker 2: con didn't really rebuke them, He only nominally said something.
- 6:44Speaker 2: And as a result of that, reported anti Semitic incidents
- 6:47Speaker 2: in London it's surged by staggering one three hundred and
- 6:52Speaker 2: fifty percent in the week's afterwards. And you see this
- 6:57Speaker 2: time and time again. In a speech he gave at
- 6:59Speaker 2: the close of raw Amadan, he condemned Israel for their
- 7:02Speaker 2: supposed occupation of Gaza, and yet he never has condemned
- 7:08Speaker 2: Hamas Preston, Are there October seventh attack in that same
- 7:13Speaker 2: speech or anything like that? So problematic stuff from top
- 7:16Speaker 2: to bottom.
- 7:17Speaker 1: We've documented on the show Zach the headway that Islam
- 7:21Speaker 1: has made in England, but certainly in London, the existence
- 7:27Speaker 1: of Shariah courts across the country. Is this an indicator
- 7:32Speaker 1: his election and his place in London? Is this an
- 7:35Speaker 1: indicator of just British indifference? Or is this a greater
- 7:40Speaker 1: indicator of Islamic impact and influence.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Well, you know, it's really a strange situation because if
- 7:47Speaker 2: you look at his policies, many of his policies are
- 7:51Speaker 2: very left leaning, very liberal, very out of line with
- 7:56Speaker 2: other Muslim members of the British political community there. And
- 8:03Speaker 2: so you have him focusing on things like climates, justice,
- 8:06Speaker 2: things like DEI initiatives, and really the one area, unfortunately
- 8:11Speaker 2: where he seems to align, particularly with other far white
- 8:14Speaker 2: members of the Islamic community there in Britain, is in
- 8:17Speaker 2: some of the anti Semitic rhetoric that he has embraced
- 8:21Speaker 2: and used and allowed to flourish under his rule. And look,
- 8:25Speaker 2: I think again, if you look at Mamdani and some
- 8:28Speaker 2: of what he said, you know, not a lot of
- 8:29Speaker 2: people realized before he was a politician, before he was
- 8:33Speaker 2: in the State House there in New York, he was
- 8:36Speaker 2: a small time rapper essentially, how I would phrase it.
- 8:41Speaker 2: He performed under the stage name mister Cartermom. You can
- 8:44Speaker 2: go on YouTube look up some of his videos, but
- 8:47Speaker 2: there's a line in one of his songs he says,
- 8:49Speaker 2: quote my love to the Holy Land five you'd better
- 8:52Speaker 2: look them up. Well, I did look him up, and
- 8:55Speaker 2: I think your readers, if they're interesting, can look them
- 8:57Speaker 2: up as well. And if you do that, you'll quickly
- 9:00Speaker 2: find out that the Holy nine to five are individuals
- 9:03Speaker 2: who are convicted of funneling millions of dollars to Hamas.
- 9:08Speaker 2: And that is the individual that he was giving praise
- 9:11Speaker 2: to before he was ever in the political world, before
- 9:15Speaker 2: he was in the political arena. And I think that's
- 9:17Speaker 2: a very problematic thing in and of itself.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Zack Smith with me. We're talking about a piece he's written,
- 9:24Speaker 1: Look to London for a Glimpse of New York City's Future,
- 9:27Speaker 1: and he points to the mayoral disaster of London that
- 9:33Speaker 1: is Sadi Khan, and just looking at the policies advanced
- 9:38Speaker 1: by Zoe Randmum Donnie in New York City, who is
- 9:41Speaker 1: right now you would have to say the leading candidate.
- 9:44Speaker 1: But I want to go back and ask you, Zach,
- 9:48Speaker 1: aren't we fundamentally facing maybe a bigger problem than that is,
- 9:53Speaker 1: how is it possible that someone that espouses socialist Marxist
- 9:58Speaker 1: communist views is a heel described socialist? How can they
- 10:01Speaker 1: even run for office when they're asked to uphold the Constitution?
- 10:06Speaker 2: Well? Look, I think what we're seeing is a failure
- 10:09Speaker 2: of basic civics education in many respects. Preston that so
- 10:13Speaker 2: many people have been taken in by these talking points,
- 10:16Speaker 2: this philosophy that has failed time and time again wherever
- 10:21Speaker 2: whenever it has been tried, and I think that's why
- 10:23Speaker 2: you're seeing Governor DeSantis others placing such an emphasis on
- 10:28Speaker 2: civics education so that citizens are equipped to understand and
- 10:32Speaker 2: push back against this philosophy whenever someone brings it up
- 10:36Speaker 2: and tries to repackage it in a new social media
- 10:40Speaker 2: friendly format. But look, you're absolutely right. I think we
- 10:43Speaker 2: should be troubled by the fact that this ideology has
- 10:46Speaker 2: taken off. We should be troubled that so many people,
- 10:48Speaker 2: particularly at the local level around the country, have adopted
- 10:54Speaker 2: this policy. But I think that's why it's so important
- 10:57Speaker 2: to have these conversations, so that we can push back
- 10:59Speaker 2: against it and point out you know, socialisms and Marxisms
- 11:04Speaker 2: and communisms, mini flaws and many failures.
- 11:07Speaker 1: You mentioned to me in the break though, that there's
- 11:10Speaker 1: even another layer to this and it has to do
- 11:12Speaker 1: with citizenship.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Well, that's right. Look, I think we've seen some questions
- 11:17Speaker 2: being raised around what Zoron Mamdani may have filled out
- 11:21Speaker 2: on his citizenship application form. Whenever you apply to be
- 11:26Speaker 2: a US citizen, to be naturalized, as Mamdanni is, you
- 11:29Speaker 2: have to essentially swear, essentially that you're not going to
- 11:32Speaker 2: adopt policies that undermine the current system of government, that
- 11:37Speaker 2: don't undermine the United States. And so you've seen some
- 11:40Speaker 2: calls to examine that. I don't know that they've gained
- 11:42Speaker 2: much traction yet, but I think it is a very
- 11:45Speaker 2: interesting question to ask, is you know, if someone espouses
- 11:50Speaker 2: these socialist, Marxist, communist ideologies, certainly seems to me like
- 11:54Speaker 2: that would undermine our current system of government. And so
- 11:57Speaker 2: I think that's why you've seen some calling for his
- 12:01Speaker 2: naturalization forms and others to be closely examined.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Well, let me, I happen to have, as fate would
- 12:09Speaker 1: have it, in my stack of papers that I refer
- 12:12Speaker 1: to from time to time, literally here at all times,
- 12:16Speaker 1: the Oath for Naturalization, and it says at the very
- 12:20Speaker 1: beginning that I hereby declare on oath that I absolutely
- 12:24Speaker 1: and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to
- 12:28Speaker 1: any foreign, prints potentate state, or sovereignty of whom or
- 12:32Speaker 1: which I have here too been a subject or citizen.
- 12:36Speaker 1: And this is the part that you're alluding to, Zach,
- 12:38Speaker 1: that I will support and defend the Constitution and the
- 12:42Speaker 1: laws again of the United States, against all enemies foreign
- 12:45Speaker 1: and domestic, and I will bear true faith and allegiance
- 12:48Speaker 1: to the same. How can someone be a socialist or
- 12:52Speaker 1: Marxist or communist and stay true to that oath. That's
- 12:56Speaker 1: not possible. They are in contradiction to each other.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Yeah, look, it's I think that's a great question. But
- 13:05Speaker 2: it's more than that too, Preston. Look, you have to
- 13:07Speaker 2: fill out detailed information, you have to go through extiences
- 13:09Speaker 2: and background checks, you have to go through interviews, and
- 13:12Speaker 2: so it'd be very interesting to see what the answers
- 13:14Speaker 2: to some of those questions were throughout that process. But look, mom,
- 13:18Speaker 2: Donnie hasn't been shy about his policies. He hasn't been
- 13:21Speaker 2: shy about his positions. That's particularly true if you go
- 13:25Speaker 2: back and read his ex then Twitter feed from around
- 13:29Speaker 2: twenty twenty twenty twenty one. I leaked to some of
- 13:32Speaker 2: those posts in my article. You can go to my
- 13:34Speaker 2: own x feed at tz Smith. That's at tz Smith
- 13:37Speaker 2: where I highlight and talk about some of those posts
- 13:39Speaker 2: as well. But look, he's been very vocal about his
- 13:42Speaker 2: view that police officers should be defunded. You should defund
- 13:46Speaker 2: the police. He's been very vocal about his views that
- 13:50Speaker 2: socialist policies are the way forward, that we should freeze rents,
- 13:55Speaker 2: that we should gain implement government controls in many areas.
- 13:59Speaker 2: And so it's a litany of problematic Marxist based policies
- 14:04Speaker 2: that he's been advocating for for many years.
- 14:06Speaker 1: At this point, all right, in closing forty five seconds,
- 14:10Speaker 1: what's better, New York go ahead and elect him as
- 14:13Speaker 1: your mayor and watch it all burn, or now you
- 14:16Speaker 1: got to keep him out of the office.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Well, it's not a great choice because at this point
- 14:22Speaker 2: your choice is either Zoran Mamdani or maybe Andrew Cuomo,
- 14:25Speaker 2: maybe Eric Adams, which have their own problematic policies as
- 14:30Speaker 2: a well. But look, I think this is a bad
- 14:32Speaker 2: thing for us as our country. Preston if Mamdani is
- 14:35Speaker 2: able to implement these policies, or if anyone is able
- 14:38Speaker 2: to implement these policies in one of our nation's biggest cities.
- 14:42Speaker 2: New York City has many problems, but fundamentally it is
- 14:47Speaker 2: a one of the iconic American cities on the world stage.
- 14:50Speaker 2: It carries a lot of weight in terms of the
- 14:53Speaker 2: financial markets, other areas of everyday American life. So this
- 14:57Speaker 2: would be a really bad thing if he's a able
- 15:00Speaker 2: to implement these policies, and I think he should serve
- 15:02Speaker 2: as a warning to the rest of our nation. And
- 15:04Speaker 2: that's someone who espouses these policies to be elected as
- 15:08Speaker 2: the mayor of a major American American city.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Perfect last word, Zach, thanks for the time today, be.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Well, of course, thanks for having me on.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Thank you, sir, Zach Smith with us from the Heritage Foundation.
- 15:20Speaker 1: You're in the Morning Show with Preston Scott.
