- 0:07Speaker 1: Welcome to the Favorites. I'm black Jack Fletcher, And for
- 0:11Speaker 1: those of you who may be surprised to be hearing
- 0:13Speaker 1: my voice on IT Tuesday, just going to give you
- 0:16Speaker 1: a little bit of an explanation as to why that is.
- 0:19Speaker 1: From now through football season, you'll be getting the Favorites
- 0:21Speaker 1: twice a week. Generally, you'll be getting Chad on Tuesday
- 0:25Speaker 1: and myself on Thursday. Doesn't mean that we won't be
- 0:28Speaker 1: interacting with each other or dropping by on each other's days,
- 0:32Speaker 1: but that's just generally how this is gonna work until
- 0:34Speaker 1: we get to football season and go back to our
- 0:36Speaker 1: three show format. And so today I'm joined by legendary
- 0:41Speaker 1: baseball player, wonderful storyteller in my own personal rain man,
- 0:46Speaker 1: Paul La Duca. PAULI, how are we doing today? I'm
- 0:50Speaker 1: absolutely doing wonderful. It's like a kidney candy store right
- 0:53Speaker 1: before you're going to Vegas. It just depends on how
- 0:56Speaker 1: the drive back is. Me and Paul are heading out
- 0:58Speaker 1: to Vegas later to a I am both excited and terrified. Um.
- 1:03Speaker 1: I'm not sure which feeling is stronger at this point. Um,
- 1:07Speaker 1: but I'm sure it'll be eventful. Yeah, I just want
- 1:10Speaker 1: to get a girl up two uh our box or
- 1:15Speaker 1: our seats and have the same look on her face
- 1:18Speaker 1: that she did with the Bryce Harper picture. She seemed
- 1:20Speaker 1: like she was so excited to be at the Las
- 1:21Speaker 1: Vegas night game. Okay, okay, so all right, I'm glad.
- 1:25Speaker 1: I didn't know where that was going when you said
- 1:26Speaker 1: you wanted to get a girl. I was a little
- 1:28Speaker 1: hesitant there, but that was fine. That picture is just
- 1:30Speaker 1: so great and everybody's focused on Bryce Harper when they
- 1:33Speaker 1: focused on the girl, she's just so upset. It's great.
- 1:40Speaker 1: So you're well, you know what, PAULI, this is why
- 1:42Speaker 1: you're a pro, because that's a great segue. Uh, you're
- 1:45Speaker 1: talking about Bryce Harper. Obviously we did this show last week.
- 1:49Speaker 1: He hadn't signed yet. He proceeded to sign a couple
- 1:52Speaker 1: of hours later with Phillies for his thirteen years, three
- 1:56Speaker 1: thirty million dollar contract. There are a lot of prop
- 1:59Speaker 1: bets out there on Rice Harper right now, and you
- 2:02Speaker 1: can bet on his home run over under total which
- 2:05Speaker 1: is thirty four and a half, his RBI total which
- 2:08Speaker 1: is ninety four and a half, and his batting average
- 2:10Speaker 1: which is over under two seventy four, which one of
- 2:14Speaker 1: these speaks to you a little bit. Well, you know,
- 2:19Speaker 1: I think the r b I is that you have
- 2:20Speaker 1: to be uh a little bit get to go because
- 2:24Speaker 1: he's he's reached what ninety four and a half urbis,
- 2:26Speaker 1: He's had two years where he's been hundred, So he'd
- 2:30Speaker 1: be surprised actually that. I was actually surprised to know
- 2:34Speaker 1: that last year was his first year that he had
- 2:36Speaker 1: had a hundred RBIs um thirty four and forty home
- 2:42Speaker 1: runs twice other than that under twenty four and now
- 2:46Speaker 1: I mean under the rest to me about the park though,
- 2:49Speaker 1: because you've made a great point about him playing in
- 2:52Speaker 1: Citizens Bank Park. Yeah, and that's the thing. How many
- 2:55Speaker 1: home runs does he gage? So now it's thirty four
- 2:58Speaker 1: and a half. I mean I think the r B
- 3:00Speaker 1: I s would probably pretty be pretty safe. Um, he's
- 3:04Speaker 1: going into probably a little bit deeper of a lineup. Um,
- 3:09Speaker 1: he'll have some protection. Maybe not a little bit deeper.
- 3:11Speaker 1: But they had Sigura Real Mudo, they've got Hoskins. I mean,
- 3:14Speaker 1: it's a good lineup. I get it, you know, it's
- 3:16Speaker 1: just sigurl is good. Yeah. I mean what does McCutcheon
- 3:19Speaker 1: have left, What does some of these guys have left
- 3:21Speaker 1: to you know, but he if he stays healthy, I
- 3:24Speaker 1: think the r B I s is good to seventy
- 3:29Speaker 1: four with his eyes closed. I mean he had his
- 3:32Speaker 1: worst year ever. Yeah, just because when ends up happening
- 3:36Speaker 1: in ballparks like that, Like you drive a ball like say,
- 3:40Speaker 1: say you're in like San Franz and you just absolutely
- 3:43Speaker 1: just smoke a ball to right center field and it
- 3:47Speaker 1: gets run down and like ft, the next thing you
- 3:51Speaker 1: do to yourself was like, oh gosh, I gotta pull it,
- 3:54Speaker 1: and now you get pull happy, and and where it
- 3:58Speaker 1: ends up putting yourself in a slump. Ballpark can put
- 4:01Speaker 1: a player into a slump. If he hits the ball
- 4:04Speaker 1: really well, he's got to stay disciplined and go okay,
- 4:07Speaker 1: guys still stay with that approach. I made a hard out.
- 4:09Speaker 1: But most of the time it's not about that. You know, Organizations,
- 4:14Speaker 1: coaches whatever, want results. They don't care about the ft
- 4:17Speaker 1: line drive out that you just hit a bullet. They'd
- 4:20Speaker 1: rather have the thirty foot blooper that hits the chalk
- 4:22Speaker 1: and there's a double and scores three runs. It's just
- 4:24Speaker 1: the bottom line. It's called results. So you know, when
- 4:29Speaker 1: you hit a ball that well over there, it gets caught,
- 4:32Speaker 1: it goes through your head. Gosh, alright, my next step bad.
- 4:35Speaker 1: I can't and I smoked one that way. I gotta
- 4:37Speaker 1: try to pull in the pictures. Now you're out of
- 4:40Speaker 1: your now you you made a point about Citizens Bank Park.
- 4:43Speaker 1: We were talking about this. You've played there before, right, Yeah,
- 4:48Speaker 1: And I made a point to I think the one
- 4:51Speaker 1: year I hit when I was either with the Mets
- 4:54Speaker 1: or Marlin's I have to look, it was like I
- 4:56Speaker 1: hit twelve home runs one year, and I think seven
- 4:58Speaker 1: of them were there. Yeah, So that's that's obviously gonna
- 5:01Speaker 1: benefit him. And that's why I kind of like the
- 5:03Speaker 1: home run total over thirty four and a half. I mean,
- 5:05Speaker 1: he's gonna play eighty one games there, you know, and
- 5:09Speaker 1: he's just I think he's gonna crush in that park
- 5:12Speaker 1: with with the home run totals. And not to mention,
- 5:15Speaker 1: he's got the benefit of staying within the same division
- 5:18Speaker 1: he's played in for his entire career, so you know,
- 5:21Speaker 1: the pitching at least should be somewhat familiar to him.
- 5:23Speaker 1: It's not like he's going to a new league or
- 5:24Speaker 1: even a new division. No, I agree, Um, it's gonna
- 5:30Speaker 1: be a little weird for him. It was a little
- 5:31Speaker 1: weird for me when you play against your old team.
- 5:33Speaker 1: That will probably subside after maybe one or two series. Um.
- 5:39Speaker 1: And people are talking, are they gonna go headhunting after him?
- 5:41Speaker 1: That's not gonna happen. Um Uh. Do the DC pitchers
- 5:46Speaker 1: know what he has? Yeah, but you know he's been
- 5:48Speaker 1: standing in the outfield and he knows what the Washington
- 5:50Speaker 1: guys throat to. You make a good, good point there.
- 5:53Speaker 1: He's not changing divisions. Um. I know, inter league play
- 5:56Speaker 1: and guys change, but still the relievers and some to
- 6:00Speaker 1: the left handed specialist. He doesn't have to sort of
- 6:02Speaker 1: relearn maybe the new guys. But um, it is a
- 6:06Speaker 1: big advantage. And like you said, Citizens Bank Ballpark is
- 6:09Speaker 1: just it's a different beast. He's got to just get
- 6:11Speaker 1: over the weather early. Um like just like any of
- 6:15Speaker 1: cool weather, um a city. As soon as it starts
- 6:18Speaker 1: getting hot. I would think if he stays healthy, he's
- 6:21Speaker 1: gonna start launching. Alright. So we're on the overs all
- 6:24Speaker 1: across the board here, over thirty four and a half
- 6:26Speaker 1: home runs which is minus on over ninety four and
- 6:30Speaker 1: a half rbi, which is minus one twelve and over
- 6:33Speaker 1: batting average to seventy four also minus one twelve. Probably
- 6:37Speaker 1: before we move on, I want to talk for a
- 6:38Speaker 1: second about Audible. Could listening make you a better parent,

- 8:16Speaker 1: five hundred five hundred and listen for a change. That's
- 8:20Speaker 1: Audible dot com slash action or text action to five
- 8:26Speaker 1: hundred five hundred. Polly, let's shift gears a little bit
- 8:29Speaker 1: and talk of it's a little bit of NFL. There
- 8:32Speaker 1: are odds out there on the number one draft pick. Overall.
- 8:36Speaker 1: The top four players listed are Nick Bosa, who is
- 8:39Speaker 1: somehow still the favorite at minus Kyler Murray att plus
- 8:44Speaker 1: one sixty, Quinnin Williams at plus three fifty, and Dwayne
- 8:48Speaker 1: Haskins at plus nine hundred. To me, this is an
- 8:51Speaker 1: absolute no brainer on Kyler Murray. What do you think?
- 8:57Speaker 1: This is unbelievable? If you would have told me that
- 8:59Speaker 1: we'd be talking about Kyl and Many being the first
- 9:01Speaker 1: pick of the draft. Um about what a month ago?
- 9:06Speaker 1: And had I told you you're crazy? Um? But I
- 9:10Speaker 1: think black Jack, I don't know if this is your thought,
- 9:13Speaker 1: but this was my thought. I don't I was trying
- 9:18Speaker 1: to look. I was asking somebody, mean, you were talking
- 9:20Speaker 1: about this? Has there ever been a first of all,
- 9:23Speaker 1: is there ever been a quarterback under six ft drafted
- 9:26Speaker 1: in the first round? Because Breeze wasn't, Russell Wilson wasn't.
- 9:29Speaker 1: I mean Mayfield, Mayfield was Mayfield under six feet? If not,
- 9:32Speaker 1: he's right at it. I think I think he's just
- 9:34Speaker 1: under But he's the only one that comes to mind. Yeah,
- 9:36Speaker 1: I guess, Um, but is he must be that freak
- 9:40Speaker 1: of an athlete for them to just dispose of Rosen
- 9:45Speaker 1: or think about dispose of Rosen after just a one
- 9:48Speaker 1: year sampling. And I know Schwartz, our colleague Jeff is
- 9:52Speaker 1: a big fan of Josh. And listen, Arizona really had
- 9:56Speaker 1: no weapons. You know, David Jonson is coming on and
- 9:58Speaker 1: the offensive line was atrocious, atrocious. David Johnson's coming off
- 10:02Speaker 1: a bad injury. Larry I f it shoves at the
- 10:04Speaker 1: back end of his career. They they traded my my
- 10:08Speaker 1: favorite receiver, Peanut Butter and jelly Um John John Brown
- 10:14Speaker 1: to Baltimore, who end up having a good year for
- 10:16Speaker 1: the Ravens. So like, they traded a lot of their
- 10:20Speaker 1: explosive weapons away and they went with a defensive minded
- 10:24Speaker 1: coach and it just didn't work out. So now they're
- 10:27Speaker 1: just gonna revamp with with Murray in. But what what
- 10:32Speaker 1: can you get for Rosen? That That's my my issue is, Yeah,
- 10:36Speaker 1: what what kind of what? What did you do for
- 10:38Speaker 1: the kid to make his stock go up? To get
- 10:41Speaker 1: anything for him? Well? Nothing, And the problem is they
- 10:43Speaker 1: gave up two draft picks to move up to take him. Yeah,
- 10:47Speaker 1: they're not going to get those picks back because, like
- 10:50Speaker 1: you said, I mean, he played in front of a
- 10:51Speaker 1: terrible offensive line. He got sacked a lot. I still
- 10:54Speaker 1: like Josh Rosen, but I think it's pretty clear that
- 10:57Speaker 1: Cliff Kingsbury wants Kyler Murry to run that offense. I mean,
- 11:02Speaker 1: if you're gonna bring Kingsbury in to run that offense,
- 11:06Speaker 1: you kind of need to let him put his guys
- 11:08Speaker 1: in place. No. Yeah, he's a guy that knows his
- 11:11Speaker 1: system right, he wants to know, he wants to insert
- 11:15Speaker 1: the right guys into his system and and listen, it's
- 11:19Speaker 1: predicated on explosive plays. And that's the one thing Cardinals
- 11:23Speaker 1: have been missing for years. And I mean, Larry Fitzgerald
- 11:30Speaker 1: is not an explosive receiver. He's a great receiver, he's
- 11:33Speaker 1: one of the best receivers ever played the game, But
- 11:36Speaker 1: he's not an explosive receiver. He is a uh a
- 11:40Speaker 1: possession receiver and he catches everything, but he's not a
- 11:43Speaker 1: guy you're gonna throw down in the field to or
- 11:45Speaker 1: explosive praise it plays and the Cardinals have not had
- 11:49Speaker 1: that at all, Um since Kurt Warner and Larry and
- 11:54Speaker 1: those boys and Kon Bolden and they they forgot a
- 11:57Speaker 1: lot of those other guys, the weapons that they had
- 11:59Speaker 1: on off this when they did, you know't get to
- 12:02Speaker 1: the Super Bowl win. Um, you know, Pittsburgh beat him.
- 12:06Speaker 1: So ultimately, do you think Kyler Murray goes first overall?
- 12:10Speaker 1: I think he does. I think he does. This. This
- 12:13Speaker 1: is like I've never like we we talked last week
- 12:16Speaker 1: on the pod, I've never seen a guy actually test
- 12:20Speaker 1: better when it comes to height and wait, he's a
- 12:24Speaker 1: freak athlete. I think that the Cardinals and the rest
- 12:28Speaker 1: of the league are saying it's just the best athlete
- 12:31Speaker 1: out there by far, and we just can't pass them up.
- 12:35Speaker 1: So sorry, Josh, I think what's going on now? I
- 12:39Speaker 1: think you're absolutely right. I mean, it's it's it's kind
- 12:41Speaker 1: of unfortunate for Josh Rosen. It kind of reminds me
- 12:44Speaker 1: of like that movie with Ben Stiller, The Heartbreak Kid,
- 12:47Speaker 1: where he marries this girl and then goes on his
- 12:49Speaker 1: honeymoon and meets the woman who's really in love with Like,
- 12:51Speaker 1: that's that's kind of what the Cardinals did, Like they
- 12:54Speaker 1: married Josh Rosen and then found Kyler Murray and like, ship,
- 12:57Speaker 1: what do I do? Now? Do I? How do I
- 12:59Speaker 1: get out this? You seem like a guy who can
- 13:02Speaker 1: find your way out of that situation. M hmm, No, no, no,
- 13:06Speaker 1: Sometimes you gotta go to the basement, make a call, bathroom.
- 13:11Speaker 1: You gotta get rid of the echoes though, Oh Jesus.
- 13:19Speaker 1: All right, um, all right, so let's let's move on
- 13:23Speaker 1: to a little college basketball. We've got conference tournament conference
- 13:28Speaker 1: tournaments starting, uh, well starting today. Um, but let's talk
- 13:32Speaker 1: about a couple of big ones. PAULI the a c C.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Now we've got Duke. Obviously, they're waiting on Zion Williamson back.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Um could be as soon as tonight as tonight, UM,
- 13:42Speaker 1: but either way, it looks like he is going to
- 13:44Speaker 1: come back and play for them. Virginia best defense in
- 13:47Speaker 1: the country. There your second choice at plus two hundred, Duke,
- 13:51Speaker 1: by the way, plus one ten, your third choice North
- 13:53Speaker 1: Carolina at plus three fifty, and then there's a significant
- 13:57Speaker 1: gap to Florida State, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, and Oville. Do
- 14:01Speaker 1: you think there's a play here on anyone other than
- 14:03Speaker 1: Duke to win the a SEC Not really. I mean
- 14:09Speaker 1: I get maybe Virginia, UM, because it might it might
- 14:13Speaker 1: take Zion a little bit to get back into the offense.
- 14:16Speaker 1: You know, this is the best offensive team that Bennett's
- 14:20Speaker 1: had in a while, UM, and they do seem to
- 14:25Speaker 1: take over in the second half. UM. And again we
- 14:28Speaker 1: know his success outside the tournament, but when he gets
- 14:33Speaker 1: in the tournament, it's just been an absolute struggle. They've
- 14:37Speaker 1: been awful. UM. Virginia. So I do think they their
- 14:42Speaker 1: defense is going to play in the a SEC tournament.
- 14:43Speaker 1: They're gonna be tough to handle. UM. I think the
- 14:48Speaker 1: sneaky team in the tournament is Louisville. I think they're
- 14:52Speaker 1: way better in way undersold. What do they plus two thousand? Um?
- 14:58Speaker 1: You know Syracuse and Beeheid that that zone plays a
- 15:01Speaker 1: little bit Florida States, Okay, North Carolina doesn't play enough defense.
- 15:06Speaker 1: I'm surprised. You know, if you look Louisville is they're
- 15:10Speaker 1: thirty and offensive efficiency, they're the top twenty in defense.
- 15:14Speaker 1: They've been in a lot of games. They had a
- 15:15Speaker 1: really tough loss. They had Virginia buried, they had Virginia beat,
- 15:20Speaker 1: they hadn't beat by fifteen, and they didn't score point Virginia.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Virginia in Louisville has the same problem every once in
- 15:27Speaker 1: a while, or Virginia used to. But Louisville has the
- 15:30Speaker 1: Virginia problem where they can just go stale and not
- 15:33Speaker 1: score for like five to ten minutes. But if if
- 15:37Speaker 1: they can, they can be in a lot of games.
- 15:39Speaker 1: So I think they're the sleeper team. But I do
- 15:43Speaker 1: think this is a child. It will end up being
- 15:45Speaker 1: a chalk tournament. O beat Duke in Virginia. I'm intrigued
- 15:48Speaker 1: by U n C a little bit at plus three fifty,
- 15:50Speaker 1: but ultimately I think you're right that the top two
- 15:54Speaker 1: teams here are the teams that this comes down to.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Virginia is the one that's kind of got my my
- 16:00Speaker 1: interest peaked here because you're right, last year this defense
- 16:04Speaker 1: was every bit as good as it is this year,
- 16:05Speaker 1: but they didn't have DeAndre Hunter, and without him, he's
- 16:09Speaker 1: the guy who when they're in those scoring drafts, can
- 16:11Speaker 1: kind of dig them out a little bit. And without
- 16:14Speaker 1: him last year we saw them really struggle to put
- 16:16Speaker 1: points on the board. I don't think they will have
- 16:18Speaker 1: that same issue now. I also think that even when
- 16:22Speaker 1: Zion Williamson comes back, Duke is going to be careful
- 16:25Speaker 1: with him because they don't want to lose him again.
- 16:28Speaker 1: So I'm gonna go with Virginia at plus two hundred
- 16:31Speaker 1: in the a SEC Tournament. I'd like it. I think
- 16:34Speaker 1: it's a good play. I think they're definitely in the
- 16:36Speaker 1: team to be Like I said, I would take a
- 16:39Speaker 1: flyer on Louisville plus two thousand. Why not? Why not?
- 16:43Speaker 1: I am telling you that that conference is not that
- 16:46Speaker 1: far apart when you take Zion out of the equation.
- 16:49Speaker 1: All right, now, you want to talk about a conference
- 16:51Speaker 1: that's really not far apart? Let's talk about the Big Twelve.
- 16:54Speaker 1: The Big Twelve is very very tightly contested this year.
- 16:59Speaker 1: The favorite, for the first time in a long time
- 17:01Speaker 1: going into the Big twelve tournament is not Kansas. It's
- 17:04Speaker 1: Texas Tech plus two hundred, Kansas is plus two fifty,
- 17:08Speaker 1: Iowa State plus four hundred, Kansas State plus five hundred,
- 17:12Speaker 1: Baylor plus seven hundred, Texas at plus nine hundred, and
- 17:16Speaker 1: TCU at plus two thousand. What do you think happens
- 17:19Speaker 1: in the Big twelve Tournament? Does Kansas rally and win
- 17:21Speaker 1: this thing or or does it go somewhere else this year?
- 17:24Speaker 1: You know, that's a good question. This is the first
- 17:26Speaker 1: time in how many years, Bill self is not when
- 17:29Speaker 1: the Big twelve title. UM, at least outright and during
- 17:35Speaker 1: the season, Texas Texas for real, and they housed Texas
- 17:39Speaker 1: last night. Um, they play very good defensive, very good offense.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Kansas has sort of been jackal and high. At one
- 17:46Speaker 1: point in this season, they were number one in kipond,
- 17:48Speaker 1: number one in the nation. Then they had that little
- 17:51Speaker 1: rut and that little drought, and then um they went
- 17:55Speaker 1: and they blew out Kansas State. UM, I can't figure
- 17:59Speaker 1: them out like then, Bill self will go to a
- 18:03Speaker 1: tournament and see a tournament and he'll get ousted in
- 18:06Speaker 1: the first round, and then I'll go win a national championship.
- 18:08Speaker 1: They had the most checkal and Hyde program UM, and
- 18:11Speaker 1: I really don't know what to do with to Kansas,
- 18:13Speaker 1: and I I think they're the kind of team that
- 18:17Speaker 1: probably will step it up when the chips are on
- 18:20Speaker 1: the table. So you're getting plus money on team with
- 18:24Speaker 1: back class and a coach that knows what he's doing.
- 18:26Speaker 1: So I probably play Kansas. You know I'm gonna play
- 18:32Speaker 1: Kansas as well. Listen, I'm playing Kansas. You're getting plus
- 18:36Speaker 1: two fifty. And I kind of view Kansas in the
- 18:38Speaker 1: Big Twelve the same way I view the New England Patriots.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Until somebody beats them, I'm going to take them to
- 18:43Speaker 1: win the Big Twelve because they just do it every
- 18:45Speaker 1: damn year. So you're gonna be plus two fifty on
- 18:48Speaker 1: Kansas in the Big Twelve. That's where I'm gonna go. Yeah,
- 18:51Speaker 1: I give it, you're going. I'll tell you what though,
- 18:53Speaker 1: I do believe that Texas Tech and UM Kansas are
- 18:58Speaker 1: the two best teams in that in that UM by
- 19:02Speaker 1: far the two best teams in the Big twelve. I
- 19:04Speaker 1: I really do. Um, you have to understand to Kansas
- 19:08Speaker 1: got the number one strength of schedule. They played against
- 19:12Speaker 1: the number one offenses adjusted offenses in the nation. So
- 19:16Speaker 1: that's where I'll lean Kansas over Texas Tech. I do
- 19:20Speaker 1: think Texas Tech is good, very good. But like I said,
- 19:25Speaker 1: I'll take the plus money and I think Kansas will
- 19:27Speaker 1: go far in the tournament. You do, yeah, I do.
- 19:30Speaker 1: I think they're better. It's just the schedule that they played.
- 19:33Speaker 1: I think that it took their toll on them midway
- 19:37Speaker 1: through the season, and I think they've caught their stride
- 19:39Speaker 1: a little bit here towards the end. Anything on the
- 19:41Speaker 1: college slate tonight that's got your interest. Actually, it's a
- 19:44Speaker 1: pretty good slate. I wish we would have got to
- 19:45Speaker 1: Vegas a little bit earlier, but there's only one game.
- 19:48Speaker 1: I like Nevada tonight, who's lost to Utah State, UM
- 19:53Speaker 1: last last game for the third loss. They didn't even
- 19:57Speaker 1: think they lose one game this year, or maybe two,
- 20:00Speaker 1: but they've lost three. They played tonight announcy the eight
- 20:03Speaker 1: o'clock game air Force. Yeah, they're playing air Force. Their
- 20:06Speaker 1: thirteen and a half point favorites. All the tournaments start today,
- 20:11Speaker 1: some good tournaments tomorrow. By the way, ten o'clock games
- 20:15Speaker 1: start in the MEAC. So I like Butler against Davier tonight.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Butler needs to make a little bit of run to
- 20:20Speaker 1: try to get in the tournament. Alright, So you you
- 20:24Speaker 1: like Nevada over air force me at games start tomorrow
- 20:27Speaker 1: and you like Butler. Yeah, okay, I'm glad we got
- 20:30Speaker 1: that Polly. Guys are terrible at taking care of their health,
- 20:35Speaker 1: whether it's a knee injury, a bad back, or something worse.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Men are usually more comfortable rubbing the proverbial dirt on

- 22:10Speaker 1: down to what is the favorite part of my week,
- 22:13Speaker 1: and that is story time with Paula Duca. Now, paul I,
- 22:17Speaker 1: I heard from Little Birdie that you have an interesting
- 22:21Speaker 1: story from your minor league days in Lake Elsinore, California. Yeah,
- 22:26Speaker 1: so here's the story of I was an a ball
- 22:29Speaker 1: um and playing for the Bakersfield Daughters. So we're playing
- 22:32Speaker 1: the Lake Elsinore Storm and Lake Elsinore had a casino
- 22:38Speaker 1: um where you could play Texas hold um um in
- 22:42Speaker 1: Omaha for the people out there that don't know. Omaha,
- 22:46Speaker 1: hello obviously, um, and there's probably about six or seven
- 22:52Speaker 1: of us. After a game, we go down to the casino.
- 22:54Speaker 1: The casino was below the m the hotel, so we're
- 23:00Speaker 1: you know, we're playing throughout the night and a couple
- 23:03Speaker 1: of us are on the heater. I'm up a little
- 23:04Speaker 1: bit of money and um, I think we were playing
- 23:07Speaker 1: at the time like two four or five ten. You know,
- 23:10Speaker 1: we were in the minor leagues. We weren't making a
- 23:12Speaker 1: ton of money, and there were limit pots too, so
- 23:15Speaker 1: guys wouldn't really get crushed. So it's about eleven o'clock.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Obviously you're in the minor leagues. You gotta curfew at
- 23:22Speaker 1: Mount at midnight and boom, the lights go out in
- 23:28Speaker 1: all of Lake Elsinore. So guys start covering their chips,
- 23:33Speaker 1: their money. Guys are you know at that time, you
- 23:37Speaker 1: could still smoke in places, so guys were smoking cigarettes,
- 23:41Speaker 1: had their lighters on, and you know, I heard a
- 23:45Speaker 1: guy who said, you know, everybody stop, everybody chill, let's
- 23:48Speaker 1: let's see what's going on. So we all got our chips.
- 23:52Speaker 1: We walked outside and it's it's pitch black and all
- 23:55Speaker 1: you can see is the lights from the stadium, which
- 23:57Speaker 1: were about about a half a mile away, quarter mile
- 23:59Speaker 1: aways somewhere in that area, so you could see somewhat outside.
- 24:04Speaker 1: So next thing I hear is I hear this older
- 24:08Speaker 1: man going, don't worry, we got it. I'm like what.
- 24:11Speaker 1: So he brings out about fifteen like literally candles and
- 24:17Speaker 1: like candle labras, like almost like candle labs. I'm not lying.
- 24:24Speaker 1: I mean they look like menorahs. I I mean they
- 24:28Speaker 1: were like lit on the table. And now I'm playing
- 24:31Speaker 1: Texas hold him with a power outage in Lake elson
- 24:35Speaker 1: Or after about a half hour delay. Now it's then
- 24:39Speaker 1: we're playing with candles on the table so we can
- 24:41Speaker 1: see the cards. Wait, so they brought the candles or
- 24:44Speaker 1: the menorahs, whatever it may be into the casino. Yes, no,
- 24:48Speaker 1: they had like candles, and I guess there's power outages.
- 24:52Speaker 1: How it happened in Lake elson Or, I don't know,
- 24:53Speaker 1: but they were ready. They didn't have a backup generator,
- 24:55Speaker 1: but they had candles ready. The action was going to
- 24:58Speaker 1: keep on going. Was full. All right, so we start
- 25:04Speaker 1: playing again, right, but here's the problem. Now, like you know,
- 25:09Speaker 1: we don't have any clocks on we're not looking at
- 25:11Speaker 1: it watches. We're playing. Next thing, you know, it's like
- 25:14Speaker 1: three in the morning. And I had remember I had
- 25:17Speaker 1: won like eight hundred bucks, which eight hundred dollars, and
- 25:19Speaker 1: you're in a ball you're making eight fifty a month.
- 25:21Speaker 1: It's like gold. That's a month's rent. Like you're like,
- 25:24Speaker 1: oh my god, this is unbelievable. And we came up
- 25:31Speaker 1: the hill at about three fifteen and we just came
- 25:34Speaker 1: sprinting back and we get into our room. Now, when
- 25:39Speaker 1: you're in the minor leagues, you obviously have a roommate.
- 25:42Speaker 1: My roommate at the time was a guy named Mike
- 25:44Speaker 1: metcalf U and he was with me. So we got
- 25:48Speaker 1: into our room and we went in and then one
- 25:53Speaker 1: of the other guys, a guy named Ken Huckabee, he
- 25:55Speaker 1: asked his roommate, who did not go, hey, was there
- 25:59Speaker 1: a bed check? And he goes no. So we're like, yes, okay,
- 26:03Speaker 1: we're cool, everything's cool. No bed check. We gambled because
- 26:08Speaker 1: whenever you go out in the minor leagues, it's curfew,
- 26:11Speaker 1: usually as midnight or one o'clock. UM. But our manager
- 26:14Speaker 1: was John Shelby T. Boon and Shelby UM he caught
- 26:17Speaker 1: the last out. Actually, the World Series for the Dodgers
- 26:20Speaker 1: played for the Oriels. The best manager I ever had,
- 26:24Speaker 1: the best. He was so awesome. So he never really
- 26:27Speaker 1: had a bed check, but you just wanted to make
- 26:29Speaker 1: sure just in case. So no bed check. Nothing. We
- 26:33Speaker 1: get to the ballpark the next day, obviously the lights
- 26:36Speaker 1: are back on, and like Alison or and it's about
- 26:41Speaker 1: three o'clock and he calls a team meeting and he
- 26:46Speaker 1: steps in front of us and he goes, okay, I
- 26:50Speaker 1: saw about ten of you guys running up to your
- 26:54Speaker 1: rooms last night at about three o'clock in the morning.
- 26:59Speaker 1: It's a hunter dollars right now if you tell me
- 27:01Speaker 1: who you are, two if you don't. And he just
- 27:05Speaker 1: walks into his room and in the manager's office, and
- 27:09Speaker 1: I'm sitting there now, we're all pondering. We all go
- 27:13Speaker 1: in the bathroom, like how the lights were out. There's
- 27:16Speaker 1: no way he could have saw us. Did he do
- 27:18Speaker 1: a bed check? What is going on? Next thing, you know,
- 27:25Speaker 1: about fifteen guys walk into his room and he just
- 27:29Speaker 1: started dying laughing, and he goes, ha ha ha ha.
- 27:33Speaker 1: He goes La Duca, Mattcalf and Huckabee you stay here,
- 27:38Speaker 1: and he goes all the rest of you guys. I
- 27:40Speaker 1: never saw any of you guys. I just saw these
- 27:42Speaker 1: three clowns, and I go, how in the heck did
- 27:47Speaker 1: you see us? See what happens is every minor league
- 27:53Speaker 1: manager has to write a report after a game. Um,
- 27:57Speaker 1: and what ended up happening is when lights went out,
- 28:01Speaker 1: t Bone was white right in his report. He fell asleep.
- 28:06Speaker 1: He got back up and he had to write his report,
- 28:08Speaker 1: and the lights were out. He went down to his
- 28:11Speaker 1: rent a car, his rent a car, turned on the
- 28:16Speaker 1: pilot light in the rent a car and was doing
- 28:18Speaker 1: his report. We ran right by him at three fifteen
- 28:21Speaker 1: in the morning. Wow, by his rent a car. Aren't
- 28:26Speaker 1: Casino is kind of a no no if you're playing
- 28:28Speaker 1: like professional baseball? I mean, like, what are the chances? Like?
- 28:35Speaker 1: He just started dying laugh in the funny cart. He laughed.
- 28:38Speaker 1: He laughed so loud, and like thought it was the
- 28:41Speaker 1: funniest thing. He goes, you three clowns ran right by
- 28:44Speaker 1: my car. I had the light on, I was doing
- 28:47Speaker 1: the report, and I just figured there was more people
- 28:51Speaker 1: down there. The best part is that he he just said,
- 28:54Speaker 1: I saw ten of you. He made up a number
- 28:56Speaker 1: and fifteen guys walked in. But he took the fifts
- 29:01Speaker 1: and he had a party with us at the end
- 29:02Speaker 1: of the year. What a guy. Yeah, that's a true story.
- 29:06Speaker 1: And there is a casino in Lake elsin Or Yeah. Wow,
- 29:10Speaker 1: that's good to know if I'm ever in Lake Elsinore over, California. Now,
- 29:15Speaker 1: But that was nineteen ninety six, sure about that? Hold
- 29:25Speaker 1: on ninety four? Yeah, that was the same year that
- 29:42Speaker 1: we were in San Bernardino and we almost got arrested
- 29:48Speaker 1: because my buddy went behind the counter of Denny's because
- 29:56Speaker 1: he was upset because the lady said Denny's was closed
- 29:59Speaker 1: and he was drunk. And the guy goes, no Denny's
- 30:04Speaker 1: this twenty four hours and the ladies like, not this Denny's.
- 30:07Speaker 1: And he went behind the counter and started just cooking.
- 30:13Speaker 1: He went he went like into the kitchen and started cooking. Yeah,
- 30:17Speaker 1: he just started. You were back there, and yes, and
- 30:19Speaker 1: we were trying to drag him out of there because
- 30:21Speaker 1: she started just started down on the police. She was
- 30:23Speaker 1: by herself. What was he cooking? Um? I think he
- 30:27Speaker 1: was trying to cook moons over Mi haammy. That's all
- 30:29Speaker 1: he kept saying all night. What what moons over my hammy?
- 30:35Speaker 1: What is moon's over from my haammi? It's two pieces
- 30:38Speaker 1: of bread. It's wondrous. It's two pieces of bread ham
- 30:43Speaker 1: and like eggs. It's like phenomenal. And I remember we
- 30:48Speaker 1: were walking in He's like, I want moons over my hammy,
- 30:51Speaker 1: and then ladies like it's closed, and I was like,
- 30:54Speaker 1: we're getting out of here, and he's like, no, 're not.
- 30:58Speaker 1: And he's like, I'm getting my moon over Miami. And
- 31:00Speaker 1: he's like I kind of get it to go and
- 31:02Speaker 1: he's like no, and he's like okay, and he hopped
- 31:09Speaker 1: over the counter and she's like what are you doing?
- 31:11Speaker 1: And she started getting scared a little bit. And then
- 31:13Speaker 1: I remember telling him like, bro, what are you doing?
- 31:16Speaker 1: She could have a gun, Like I said something to
- 31:18Speaker 1: that aspect, like what are you doing? And he's like,
- 31:21Speaker 1: I'm gonna cook moons over Miami. And he went back
- 31:23Speaker 1: there and he started turning on like the grease or whatever.
- 31:28Speaker 1: And then finally, um, it was Miguel Cairo or one
- 31:33Speaker 1: of the other guys, one of the Latin guys, like
- 31:36Speaker 1: was like cursing on him in Latin, and finally like
- 31:39Speaker 1: just grab Spanish got him out of there, and like literally,
- 31:44Speaker 1: we ran out of there as the you could. I
- 31:48Speaker 1: don't know if the police were pulling up, but we
- 31:49Speaker 1: ran out of there like I thought we were going
- 31:51Speaker 1: to jump. So let me just get this story straight,
- 31:54Speaker 1: because there's a lot to unpack here. You had a
- 31:57Speaker 1: teammate who hopped the counter at a closed dead he
- 32:00Speaker 1: used to cook moons over my hammy, and then Miguel
- 32:04Speaker 1: Cairo was yelling at him in Latin. No no in Spanish. Okay, okay, okay,
- 32:10Speaker 1: I'm sorry. I didn't. I didn't Latin, and then I
- 32:14Speaker 1: took Latin in high school. Waited a second, old time.
- 32:18Speaker 1: You can't just casually drop that Latin in high school.
- 32:23Speaker 1: Let me tell you something. I went to a prep school.
- 32:25Speaker 1: Somebody want to challenge me? Yeah, I do. I took
- 32:27Speaker 1: five years of Latin. Oh my god, five years of Latin?
- 32:32Speaker 1: All right? What did you? How did you wind up
- 32:34Speaker 1: taking Latin? A V is a five? Okay? Those Roman numerals,
- 32:46Speaker 1: all right? I don't really think there's anything left to say. Um,
- 32:52Speaker 1: I'm that's what you've retained from Latin vas of five
- 33:00Speaker 1: I took. Here's what happened was when I went to
- 33:04Speaker 1: I went to a prep school and you had to
- 33:06Speaker 1: take something like so I took one year in Latin
- 33:09Speaker 1: and then I took French my second year. Because French,
- 33:11Speaker 1: I went to an all boys school, but French, where
- 33:14Speaker 1: it's an all girls school next to us French, French,
- 33:17Speaker 1: you could was taken up the all girls school. So
- 33:19Speaker 1: that's the only reason why I took French. So I
- 33:21Speaker 1: could just get away from all the guys and go
- 33:22Speaker 1: see some women. Can you speak any French? Hell no,
- 33:27Speaker 1: we we. The only thing I know in French is
- 33:31Speaker 1: when my French horse crosses the line on the turf course. Wow.
- 33:35Speaker 1: All right, but no, that is true, and I want
- 33:39Speaker 1: to say it happened in San Bernardino. San Bernardino had
- 33:42Speaker 1: a team. A lot of stuff happened in the colleague.
- 33:45Speaker 1: You gotta understand, Blackjack, A lot of stuff happened before
- 33:49Speaker 1: the cell phone and cell phone cameras. How many of
- 33:51Speaker 1: your stories involved in Denny's A lot you're gonna understand.
- 33:58Speaker 1: Like I said, I signed a ninety eight fifty dollars
- 34:02Speaker 1: a month, so like people always talk about, you professionally
- 34:06Speaker 1: signed your instant millionaire. No, I got twenty two dollars
- 34:11Speaker 1: in school, I bought a Camaro straight Guido move. And
- 34:20Speaker 1: you remember when like carpets for your dashboard were popular. No,
- 34:25Speaker 1: Paul I was born in I don't okay, Well at
- 34:28Speaker 1: one time that was popular black jack. Okay, you were
- 34:33Speaker 1: a A P I M P if you had for
- 34:37Speaker 1: on your dashboard. Okay, it spells every week on the show. Okay. Yeah,
- 34:41Speaker 1: my spelling is better. It's gotten better. I've been I've
- 34:44Speaker 1: been into the sourus. Okay, you've been working on your
- 34:49Speaker 1: spelling and a thesaurus. Yes, hey, listen, if I have
- 34:52Speaker 1: to learn the harder words than the easier words will
- 34:55Speaker 1: be easier. Okay. That's how I challenge myself. It's called
- 34:59Speaker 1: G A M B I L I N G. See. Okay,
- 35:06Speaker 1: so you've been working on your spelling. Um, so okay,
- 35:09Speaker 1: the carpet on the dashboard. Yeah, so what you would
- 35:13Speaker 1: do is like that? Was it so like you had
- 35:17Speaker 1: four guys living in one house, I mean in Denny's
- 35:23Speaker 1: and top Ramen and Taco Bell, and there was just
- 35:27Speaker 1: like I mean, outpack was a treat. Outpack was a treat,
- 35:31Speaker 1: I mean, and that's nothing he gets out back. You
- 35:33Speaker 1: can get a great steak for twelve bucks. But um,
- 35:37Speaker 1: that's the way it was in the minor leagues, and
- 35:38Speaker 1: you would lean on the bonus baby, so like literally
- 35:42Speaker 1: like if one of your guys on your team was
- 35:44Speaker 1: the first rounded to sign for a million dollars, he
- 35:46Speaker 1: was picking up the tab almost eight percent of the time. Wow,
- 35:50Speaker 1: whatever happened to that camaro? Yeah, that's a good question.
- 35:56Speaker 1: It might be still at Turf Paradise. Well, I wouldn't
- 36:01Speaker 1: be a turf Paradise. Well I was to it was
- 36:03Speaker 1: parked there a lot. I'll explain Turf Paradise for those
- 36:10Speaker 1: who don't know. That's the race track that or it's
- 36:13Speaker 1: at Phoenix Grayhound Park. We used to sneak out of
- 36:15Speaker 1: school and go to their or the Greyhounds. But the
- 36:18Speaker 1: Greyhounds was too far away. It was by the airport,
- 36:20Speaker 1: so we would usually go to the horses. So you
- 36:23Speaker 1: think you just left this car to race track of
- 36:25Speaker 1: some sort, You know, I really don't remember what happened
- 36:29Speaker 1: to that car. I don't. I think maybe I gave
- 36:33Speaker 1: it to my dad or my brother at the end
- 36:35Speaker 1: of it. And um, I bet you had some good
- 36:38Speaker 1: times in that car. Yeah I did. I U I
- 36:45Speaker 1: went to Arizona State and I had a girlfriend that
- 36:48Speaker 1: was a bad move. So yeah, like my high school
- 36:55Speaker 1: and my college years, I was actually a good boy.
- 36:58Speaker 1: I was actually a good boy. I am a good boy. Paul.
- 37:02Speaker 1: There's nobody that believes that. Come on black check, you
- 37:05Speaker 1: believe that you'd let me marry your daughter? All right,
- 37:08Speaker 1: I think it's time to wrap this. That has been
- 37:13Speaker 1: the Favorites with Paul Laduka. Thank you everybody for listening.
- 37:18Speaker 1: Chad and Scooch will be back on Thursday this week.
- 37:20Speaker 1: Make sure you download the Favorites on Apple podcast leaving
