- 0:16Welcome to PCR Sports. Good evening, I'm Dipam and
- 0:20welcome to the PCR Sports Show with myself, Nilesh and Nigel
- 0:23this week and you know, made it to the end of the week so well
- 0:26done and it's going to be a hot one this weekend, so whatever
- 0:28sporting activities you're doing out there, it should be in great
- 0:31weather. And we've got a great show lined
- 0:34up this evening. As always, in a moment we'll be
- 0:36getting the headlines from Nigel, but I guess this evening
- 0:39are from the Peterborough Sports, a charity organization,
- 0:41a charity that supports highly rated and highly up and coming
- 0:47young sports people to support them in their pathway to
- 0:50success. And we'll be speaking to Phil
- 0:52Elmer. Phil Elmer, the chair from that
- 0:54organization, and Helen Rome, who's the events organizer.
- 0:57And we'll be speaking about their their 'cause, their
- 1:01achievements and their celebrity lunches and what are all
- 1:04involved. So we look forward to speaking
- 1:05to both of them. But as always, let's get the
- 1:08show on the road with the headlines.
- 1:10And this week it's Nigel. Hi there, Nigel, how are you?
- 1:12I'm very well, thank you. Looking forward to a sunny
- 1:14weekend. Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:16By the time, isn't it? Indeed, indeed.
- 1:18OK, your headlines then for the 30th of May.
- 1:21We're going to start with some BMX news this week and
- 1:23Peterborough's Jess Maria has edged closer to a British BMX
- 1:27title. The 15 year old Peterborough BMX
- 1:30Club star is riding up an age group but took both wins in the
- 1:34female Under Sixteens category in Rounds 5 and six of the
- 1:39Lloyds British Cycling National Series at Manchester Platts
- 1:43Fields. But the excitement didn't stop
- 1:45there. The Pittsborough BMX Club sent a
- 1:47formidable squad of 21 riders to the event and they didn't
- 1:52disappoint. Among the stand out performers
- 1:54were Dylan Dixon, Christian Grubber, Chick, Owen Portland,
- 1:58Layla Dixon all earning credit for a final results and
- 2:03showcasing the depth of talent within the club.
- 2:05Ollie Todd, Frederick State, Kaden Thompson, Bradley Golden
- 2:09and Alfie Thompson all made it past the motors and into the
- 2:14quarter finals. The next round of that series
- 2:16takes place in Gosport on June the 14th and 15th.
- 2:21Next Peterborough Royals women's American football team and the
- 2:25next pictures for the Sorry. The next fixtures for the
- 2:28Pittsburgh Royals are tomorrow, their excellent start to the
- 2:32season. A couple of weeks ago they
- 2:34travelled to West Park Rugby Club in Kent where they would
- 2:38tackle the Cardiff Valkyries and the Kent Exiles.
- 2:41The Royals of course coming fresh from their wins against
- 2:44Cardiff and the Cheshire Bears, will be hoping to extend their
- 2:48winning run. Peterborough Town Cricket Club
- 2:51then and the 1st 11 delivered a Master class at home to
- 2:54Kettering, securing maximum points with a resounding 8
- 2:57wicket victory. KET Turing, battering their bat
- 3:00in first, crumbled under the relentless assault of Towns
- 3:04Hayatullah Nazi who was simply unstoppable with figures of 6
- 3:09for 34. The visitors then bowled out for
- 3:11just 120. In response Peterborough Town
- 3:14made light work of the chase, knocking off the runs in just 20
- 3:18overs. The star of the show was Josh
- 3:20Smith with an unbeaten 66 of 62 balls.
- 3:24Elsewhere it was a mixed bag for the club.
- 3:26The 2nd 11 faced a tough out in at Wollaston, falling short by
- 3:3195 runs. However, the 3rd 11 emerge
- 3:35victorious in a now biter at Little Paxton, while the 4th 11
- 3:39suffered defeat at home to God Manchester.
- 3:42Looking ahead, the 2nd 11 will be the spotlight tomorrow,
- 3:45Bretton Gate taking on weekly and Walton with an 11 AM start.
- 3:50Meanwhile, the first eleven will aim to continue their winning
- 3:53streak, seeking their 5th consecutive victory in the North
- 3:56Ants Prem at Stony Stratford. Also kicking off at 11 AM, the
- 4:01thirds will battle it out of Warrington and the fourths will
- 4:04host Wesley Triathlon and Young Pack track prospect Ophelia
- 4:10Goodale took second place in her age group at the Darley Moore
- 4:13Duathlon. Club mate Hugo Flickware
- 4:17finished 13th in the same event and in the Tristar One Race Pack
- 4:21tracks Brian Stouffer finished 10th and Steve Hope continued
- 4:26his triathlon journey on the continent with a 19th place in
- 4:30his age group at the Challenge event in Saint Paulten, Austria.
- 4:34And finally, some close season news from Peterborough United as
- 4:38the club revealed that they are eagerly awaiting their new club
- 4:43Crest and going to launch that two days before the start of
- 4:46next season. The Crest is a big part of a
- 4:49rebranding exercise which the club will believe will benefit
- 4:54them in the modern digital world.
- 4:56Posh believe they have created the identity which will satisfy
- 5:00club fans and meet their own business requirements.
- 5:03The current Crest was designed over 20 years ago.
- 5:07The rebrand will be officially launched on Thursday the 31st of
- 5:11July. The new League One season was
- 5:13kick off on Saturday the 1st of August.
- 5:16But the new Crest will not be deployed on kits and club
- 5:19merchandise until the 26th 27 season.
- 5:23And finally from Posh, Sheffield United's lost to Sunderland in
- 5:27the Championship playoff final at Wembley was a big blow
- 5:31financially. The City club would have
- 5:33received £1,000,000 bonus under the terms of Harrison Burroughs
- 5:37transferred to Sheffield United. And that followed more bad news
- 5:42financially for Posh when Coventry were beaten by
- 5:44Sunderland in the semi finals. Posh also had £1,000,000
- 5:48promotion bonus written into that transfer for Efron Mason
- 5:52Clark. And there's your headlines this
- 5:54week. Thank you, Nigel.
- 5:56Brilliant. Lots going on as always.
- 5:58Indeed. Yeah, indeed.
- 5:59Posh have made their first signing of the summer.
- 6:02Yes, yes, that's lots of social media around that show and all
- 6:06these goals. That's that's like they don't
- 6:07dry up. Absolutely is.
- 6:09So he seems like a really good, young, promising forward there.
- 6:12So, and yeah, obviously Hector Capiano has left the club, gone
- 6:16to Watford and Posh's revolving door will be, I think, firmly
- 6:19spinning throughout the summer I would imagine.
- 6:21I think lots more needs to come, yeah.
- 6:23Yeah, absolutely. Nilesh, from your perspective,
- 6:25what are you looking forward to in the summer for Posh and and
- 6:29any transfer type news? What we're looking at, I'm
- 6:32pretty sure there'll be another signing arriving soon.
- 6:35The transfer window actually opens what, 1st of June, doesn't
- 6:37it? It's Sunday for about a week.
- 6:39To a mini window, isn't it? Yeah, a mini window to allow the
- 6:42Club World Cup teams that are participating in that tournament
- 6:47to make some signings. So yeah, I'm expecting at least
- 6:50one more I think in that early June window.
- 6:53But then again after that it'll all be eyes on the fixture list
- 6:56and pre season training which kicks in at the back end of end
- 7:00of June really. But yeah, signings are needed.
- 7:04There's plenty of rumors going around at the moment, but I'll
- 7:06wait to see what happens and wait till it's officially
- 7:09announced because yeah, it's a long old season as they say, and
- 7:13you need a break from it at times.
- 7:14And I'm certainly enjoying this one.
- 7:16And new club Crest, as you mentioned there, Nigel.
- 7:18And for the digital age, I think Newcastle are doing something
- 7:22similar as well, Newcastle United.
- 7:24I think a lot of clubs perhaps will start following suit,
- 7:26maybe, you know. Yeah, I think, I think lots of
- 7:29clubs are already looking at it. I think when you look at club
- 7:33crests, lots of them, especially the ones that have been around
- 7:36for a long time, are very intricate.
- 7:38The detail is, is is in them. And I know they've all got
- 7:41history and stuff like that, but you know, when you need to
- 7:44replicate that Crest on clothing, on all sorts of
- 7:48digital products these days, that intricacy sometimes makes
- 7:53that really difficult. So I think it's something that a
- 7:55lot of clubs will will do and, and I think from from what I've
- 7:58heard, a lot are already doing. Yeah.
- 8:00And as you can predict, it's bound to be divisive, isn't it,
- 8:03between the fan bases. These sort of things normally
- 8:05are. You're never going to satisfy
- 8:06everyone but. No, you're not.
- 8:08Ultimately, the club has to move on.
- 8:09Yeah, yeah. And the fan base, you're right.
- 8:11You're not going to satisfy everyone.
- 8:12But you know, there are real reasons for parts doing this,
- 8:15and they've come out and stated those reasons and been upfront
- 8:18about that. You know, this is causing them a
- 8:20problem. And it is causing an issue with
- 8:23income. So, you know, they you don't,
- 8:25you don't expect that they wouldn't miss up this
- 8:28opportunity. So yeah, some people will be
- 8:31against it. A lot of people will like that
- 8:33history bit. And it's been around for 20
- 8:35years and what have you. But at the end of the day, it is
- 8:38what it is. Change is good, isn't?
- 8:39It absolutely fantastic. Thank you gents.
- 8:41Right, let's take a short break and we'll be speaking to our
- 8:44guests afterwards, starting with Phil Elmer, who's the chair of
- 8:47the Sports 8 Peterborough charity organization, who
- 8:50organize charity lunches and support highly high potential
- 8:54young sports people in the region.
- 8:56So stay tuned to move back in a moment.

- 11:04You're listening to PCR sports. Welcome back to the PCR Sports
- 11:17Show with myself, Dipam, Nilesh and Nigel.
- 11:19This week we've got just have the headlines there from Nigel
- 11:23to speak about the events in the city and we'll be speaking to
- 11:26Philan Helen from Peterborough Sports Aid in a short while and
- 11:33the charity events that the Sports Aid organization run in
- 11:36the city. Nilesh, you know you've been to
- 11:38a few of those in the past. A well worthy cause, aren't
- 11:41they? They certainly are, yeah, huge
- 11:42opportunity for the the community of Peterborough, the
- 11:46business community of Peterborough especially as well
- 11:48to get behind up and coming local sportsmen and women that
- 11:53are excelling at their relevant sport.
- 11:55And this is a chance for a grant to be given to them to help them
- 12:00on their way. And that can certainly help from
- 12:02a sort of a transport and equipment perspective.
- 12:05Nigel. Yeah, yeah, sure.
- 12:06From for me, it's, it's good to see these events surviving.
- 12:12I guess it was the pandemic that stopped a lot of stuff, but a
- 12:15lot of events like this seem to fall by the wayside.
- 12:18Not just sporting events, but the dinners and the afternoon
- 12:21speeches and stuff like that, that.
- 12:23So it's great to see one actually surviving and and keep
- 12:28on on giving for and you know, Peterborough businesses,
- 12:32business community can can be really proud about that, I
- 12:35guess. I know the the next events on
- 12:38the Friday, June the 20th and we're going to be hopefully
- 12:40speaking to Phil Elmer and Helen Rome very shortly from the
- 12:43Sports Aid Foundation. But previous guests have
- 12:47included the likes of Barry Fry, who many of our listeners will
- 12:50know, Derek Redmond, athlete, Peter Shield, England goalkeeper
- 12:53and Beth Tweddle most recently as well.
- 12:55So some renowned sportsmen and women there that have taken part
- 13:00in these lunches and given a given a talk during the course
- 13:04of a couple of hours over a lunch and a chance for people of
- 13:08Peterborough to come in and enjoy their company and their
- 13:10stories. Yes, indeed, they're wonderful
- 13:12events. And we've got Phil Elmer on the
- 13:14line, who's the chair of the Peterborough Sports Aid
- 13:16Organization. And good evening, Phil.
- 13:18How are you? Even dipam, I'm fine.
- 13:20How are you? Yeah, good.
- 13:21Thank you. So good Sir, thank you for
- 13:23joining us this evening. Not a problem.
- 13:25Good dude. We're just kind of speaking
- 13:27there in the studio about the, the charity and the lunches and,
- 13:31and what have you. But kind of going back to to, to
- 13:33the basics a bit more in terms of tell us a bit more about the
- 13:37the organization itself, how long it's been operating and,
- 13:39and in particular your role within it.
- 13:42OK, well Sports Aid was founded way, way back actually in 1976.
- 13:48In those days there was a Labour government and Dennis Howell, if
- 13:51you remember him, you probably won't.
- 13:53I do, was a sports minister and he saw other nations starting to
- 13:57fund their up and coming athletes through the Olympics
- 14:01programme. So he decided to form the Sports
- 14:04Aid charity. He was known as the Sports Aid
- 14:06Foundation initially and it grew and grew.
- 14:10And as you've been saying that, I'm sure it's to help youngsters
- 14:13achieve their dreams, their aims, those that are going on to
- 14:16national and international level.
- 14:18Because as we all know, it costs an awful lot of money to fund
- 14:23these things. Training, transport, equipment,
- 14:25kit, overnight coaches fees, all that sort of thing needs paying
- 14:30for and more often than not it's the Bank of mum and dad.
- 14:35Yeah. So it's kind of to support them,
- 14:36isn't it? Like you say, and you know what,
- 14:39what, what kind of age category does the charity support?
- 14:41What, what? What's the charity?
- 14:42Supports, yeah. When you get a bit older in
- 14:45athletes, you pick it, you're picked up by one of the sports
- 14:47governing bodies and probably funded by those.
- 14:50But the money rarely trickles down to the 12 to 18 year olds
- 14:54and that's when they're the youngsters are coming through
- 14:56and I'm sure a lot of them drop away because they're not funded.
- 15:00They don't have the money to to pay to go on to achieve their
- 15:03dreams. Sports Aid in in Peterborough.
- 15:06Peterborough Sports Aid wasn't formed until 2004 and we're
- 15:11rather unique within the Sports Aid group that the money we
- 15:15raised is ring fenced for Peterborough young Peterborough
- 15:19athletes and I think that's quite unique and I think that's
- 15:22quite important that the money we raise with our lunches goes
- 15:25to local, local young athletes. And that's just to confirm
- 15:29that's that's in the catchment area of the of the Peterborough
- 15:31City Council isn't. It Peterborough City Council
- 15:33catchment area, yes. Excellent.
- 15:35That's wonderful. So yeah, we're really helping
- 15:37local and regional athletes there, aren't we?
- 15:39So it's a very kind of local cause, which is brilliant.
- 15:42And the the lunches themselves, I know Helen's going to talk a
- 15:46bit more about the organization lunches, but kind of touching on
- 15:49those. There's normally a recipient or
- 15:51two attend those where they're publicly presented with their
- 15:54grant and and obviously wished luck in their in their career.
- 15:58Yes, we normally get the ground recipient to attend with either
- 16:01a parent or guardian and we've got another one coming up on
- 16:05June the 20th. And I don't want to steal any of
- 16:07Helen's Thunder by talking about that and I'm sure she will when
- 16:11he's on. So I'll let her deal with that
- 16:13specific event. But we, we, we've helped, I
- 16:16think we've, we've added it our quite reason, something like
- 16:19£150,000 since 2004 to just over 250 young sportsmen and women.
- 16:26So it's quite a large amount of grant money that's gone to help
- 16:29these youngsters in their sports sporting career.
- 16:32Which is phenomenal, isn't it? And.
- 16:33It's phenomenal amount of money, Yes, indeed.
- 16:35And in terms of recipients, whilst maybe not directly from
- 16:41the the Peterborough arm of of the charity, but Lewis Smith,
- 16:45who's who's locally known as a gymnast, he's a guest at a
- 16:48previous lunch and he's he's been a recipient of the of a
- 16:51grant in the past hasn't. He way back in the early 2000s,
- 16:53Lewis had a couple of years of grant recipients money, I can't
- 16:57remember how much without looking at my notes.
- 17:00And when I last saw him, he came to our lunch not so long ago
- 17:03actually. I was saying, what did you spend
- 17:05the money on? Because we don't, we don't
- 17:07control what they spend it on. As long as they spend it on
- 17:10helping them develop or enhance their sporting career, that's
- 17:13fine. And he was saying that he used
- 17:15to travel to Huntingdon, a Huntingdon gym, for training and
- 17:19he had a problem with a gearbox in his car and he spent some of
- 17:23the grant money getting the gearbox repaired.
- 17:26But I think that's brilliant. If it helps him to go training,
- 17:29that's money well spent on a gearbox.
- 17:31Absolutely. And going back to the cost you
- 17:34mentioned there in the Bank of mum and dad quite often have to
- 17:36support a young athlete. I think Beth Tweddle, a previous
- 17:39lunch keynote speaker I think, hinted that their families taxi
- 17:44bill was more than their mortgage in supporting her to
- 17:46get to her dreams, reach her. Dreams.
- 17:49I looked back at some notes earlier today, some old Sports
- 17:53Aid national notes, and they were saying about 8 years ago
- 17:57the average Sports Aid athlete and their family will spend over
- 18:007000 lbs each year meeting the cost of their sport.
- 18:03Well, I assume that's probably 10, eleven, 12,000 lbs now on
- 18:06average. Yeah, absolutely.
- 18:08With inflation, it's in phenomenal amount of money,
- 18:10isn't it? So in terms of qualifying
- 18:13criteria for a grantee, what's what?
- 18:16What does a charity look for in? Applications it's the age group
- 18:20of of 12 to 18 and they'll be looking for young Peterborough
- 18:23athletes who are going to head on to national or international
- 18:27level and there's a very basic form to fill in on our website
- 18:31and you fill the form in tell us what you've done tell us what
- 18:36your expectations are get your coach to sign and agree it and
- 18:40we'll. We'll get our committee to
- 18:42review it and see if you're eligible for grant money.
- 18:45And any, any applications have to be approved by obviously a
- 18:48formal coach who works with the athlete to to kind of back up
- 18:51their, their claim of, of of their, their achievements or
- 18:53their potential. Indeed, indeed, indeed.
- 18:55Fantastic. And again, Helen, we'll talk
- 18:58about lunches. But just quickly, previous
- 19:00guests have involved sports stars like Neil Ruddock, Ron
- 19:05Atkinson, Martin Lawrenson, Beth Tweddle.
- 19:07We mentioned Louis Smith last. The last one was Colin Hendry,
- 19:10former Scottish and Blackburn footballer.
- 19:12Neil Neil Backer was in the 2003 World Cup rugby.
- 19:17Even Barry Fries spoken. How's Eddie the Eagle of course,
- 19:20looking back. And Derek Randall, the well
- 19:22known cricketer. We've had quite a lot of good
- 19:25speakers over the years. We've been involved since 2004,
- 19:28yes. Fantastic.
- 19:29Phil Nigel's in the studio with me my my Co presented team.
- 19:32He's got a question for you. I'll hand over to Nigel.
- 19:34Of course I've. I feel good to hear from you,
- 19:36Nigel. Hello.
- 19:37And it's, it's really refreshing to hear that you, you don't have
- 19:41very many stipulations about where the sportsmen spend this
- 19:44money. I know I, I work in that sort of
- 19:47field and, and I know that a lot of grant providers have paid you
- 19:50on page of rules and regulations of where you need to spend the
- 19:54money. I guess you get some good
- 19:55feedback from that and and the the the grant recipients really,
- 19:59really welcome that. Yeah, I think we we don't
- 20:02realize how much some of these things cost nowadays.
- 20:04I remember a couple of years ago, probably, probably more
- 20:07than that, a young goal minder for ice hockey Phantoms.
- 20:13And he was going through the kit.
- 20:14He bought all the kit he had to wear all the the pads and
- 20:17shoulder pads and the helmets and all the bits and pieces.
- 20:20And that was several 1000 lbs before you actually get on the
- 20:23rink and start playing. An enormous amount of money for
- 20:27the right kit. Yeah, yeah.
- 20:30Yeah, phenomenal, isn't it? And I know I've spoken to a
- 20:33previous award, a swimmer whose parents said that the, the
- 20:36swimming costumes that she wears, which they have to buy
- 20:39three or four or five of every season case they they RIP or
- 20:42tear or get damaged and they're three £400 apiece.
- 20:45So you're talking thousands for, for just just basic equipment
- 20:49almost, isn't it? And at that level.
- 20:51It is, and at that level you have to have the best and the
- 20:53latest greatest, there's no doubt about that, to help you
- 20:55compete. Yeah, exactly.
- 20:57And it has to be of the right level because you are aiming at,
- 21:01like you say, you're aiming to compete at national,
- 21:04international level. And some of the athletes will
- 21:06have eyes on the Commonwealth Games, the Olympic Games, that
- 21:09sort of level on an international representation.
- 21:12Yes, of course, when you look at those ones that nowadays are
- 21:15competing at national, international and Olympic level,
- 21:18some of the day of recipients we've had of Dame Laura and
- 21:22Kelly, Ellie Simmons, for example, Adam Peaty, people like
- 21:27Dana, Asher Smith, all of those have had sports aid awards
- 21:31within FDA, young sport in Korea.
- 21:34And if you look back over most of the recent games, looking
- 21:38back from 2012 in London up to Tokyo 2020 Olympics, sports aid
- 21:44recipient medal winners are about 60 to 70% of the overall
- 21:49you British medal winners at those events.
- 21:52All of those are say about 2/3 to 3/4 have been sports aid
- 21:57funded at some stage in their career.
- 22:00Absolutely incredible stuff. Brilliant.
- 22:02Phil, thanks for joining us this evening.
- 22:04It's been absolutely superb and obviously continued success.

- 25:11PM will be uploaded. So if you only just joined us,
- 25:13you can catch up later on. We were speaking to Phil Elmer,
- 25:17who's the chair of the Peterborough Sports, a charity
- 25:20organization, who runs charity lunches and awards grants to
- 25:24high potential young sports people in the region and on the
- 25:28phone. Now we've got Helen Rome, who's
- 25:30the events organizer. Events organizer for the charity
- 25:34who helps to organize the actual lunching events.
- 25:37Helen, good evening. Hello, how are you?
- 25:39I'm good, thank you. How are you?
- 25:41Yeah. Good.
- 25:41Thank you. Good.
- 25:42Thank you for joining us this evening.
- 25:43Welcome. You're on the pleasure.
- 25:45You're on Live with myself for Nigel and Nilesh.
- 25:48So Phil, just before the break was sort of setting the scene
- 25:52about the organization itself, the, the criteria that for, for
- 25:56grantees when they're applying and, and the good work that is
- 25:59generally done over many, many years.
- 26:02I think you mentioned £150,000 worth of grants awarded since
- 26:052004, which is phenomenal. And that money obviously doesn't
- 26:10get produced out of thin air. It has to be collected from,
- 26:14from generous donations and then people who attend the, the
- 26:17lunches. So you're you're the events
- 26:19organizer, organizer for the for the lunching events.
- 26:23Tell us a little bit about yourself in terms of event
- 26:25organization and what do these events look like?
- 26:29OK. So yes, thanks.
- 26:30I own and run Elite Events and Consultancy and a wedding and
- 26:34event space company in Peterborough.
- 26:37And we got involved with Sports Aid about 7 to 8 years ago and
- 26:43just decided along with a couple of other charities that we
- 26:46support in the city that we would gift in our time and
- 26:49organise. All of these people just turn up
- 26:52and think, oh, I'm just going to sit down.
- 26:54It takes a while to table plan, make sure we've sold enough
- 26:57tickets, have we made enough profit, you know, sort of
- 27:02negotiate contracts with venues. We've got a great venue at the
- 27:05Holiday Inn. They're very supportive of us.
- 27:07So yeah, I just deal with all of that, plus helping with the
- 27:12raffle and the auction, if we have an auction, and just making
- 27:16sure that the people who have decided to give their time by
- 27:19buying a ticket and spend time with us on their lunch break
- 27:22have the best experience that we can give them.
- 27:24Fantastic. And the next lunch taking place,
- 27:27but literally in in weeks time. Oh, a few weeks time no.
- 27:30No. A few.
- 27:32I meant weeks as in a number of way.
- 27:33I didn't mean literally a week's time, I'll get my words
- 27:36confused, but in a in a number of weeks time.
- 27:38Yes, yes, that's better. You scared?
- 27:40Me then. Friday the 20th of June and we
- 27:44have got the fabulous Craig McCall Smith and Aaron McClain
- 27:51known to Posh fans and people all over Peterborough as the Mac
- 27:55attack and what's really good at this one.
- 28:00We're calling them Peterborough United Legends and they are
- 28:03going to be coming and speaking for us, which is just such a
- 28:07blessing. But also, as many of your
- 28:10listeners may know, Posh recently won the EFL trophy.
- 28:14That's correct. And thanks to your fabulous
- 28:17e-mail into Alex, we will have the EFL trophy there for people
- 28:22to have their photograph taken with it as well.
- 28:24So something a little bit extra special will happen at the next
- 28:27lunch. Brilliant.
- 28:28And that's on Friday the 20th. And what's the venue for these?
- 28:31You've mentioned Holiday Inn, where's where's the roughly?
- 28:33Where's that in Peterborough? So Holiday Inn West is in
- 28:36Longthorpe. Post code P36SG on your sat NAV
- 28:41and we will be in one of the conference rooms in the
- 28:44corridor. If you are coming to our lunch,
- 28:47don't forget to put your registration number in the
- 28:48reception and also it starts sort of open networking 12/15 to
- 28:5512/30 sitting down 5 to one, 1:00 for lunch, 2 course meal
- 28:59followed by tea and coffee. The speaker, then a grant check
- 29:05given to the grant recipient and then questions and answers also
- 29:10to the speakers and then the raffle and wrapping up and
- 29:15leaving by three. You don't have to leave, you can
- 29:16make your way into the bar if you wish and carry on
- 29:18networking. But what's really good about
- 29:22these lunches is networking. The networking scene has changed
- 29:27greatly in the last few years in Peterborough and it's an ideal
- 29:31opportunity for corporate companies to buy a table,
- 29:36entertain clients, thank their staff or just actually, let's
- 29:41just do something social. Let's do a little bit of team
- 29:43building and just take a table. So cheaper if you buy a table of
- 29:4710. So even if you're on your own
- 29:49and want a ticket and then you've got a few friends who
- 29:51want to do that club together and get yourself a table and we
- 29:54would love to see you there. Fantastic.
- 29:56And just quick mention of the the the pricing for individual
- 30:00tickets as well as a table. Yes, the individual tickets are
- 30:03£49 and a ticket, sorry, a table of 10 is 450.
- 30:09Yeah, so it's a bonus to buy a table.
- 30:10Isn't it? Yeah, absolutely.
- 30:11And that's why I'm saying if you want to save yourself a few
- 30:13squid and you can spend that on a, on a nice glass of something
- 30:18sparkly in your legs break, then yeah, club together with your
- 30:21mates and let me know. Absolutely fantastic.
- 30:24And there's like you mentioned the format of the lunch there.
- 30:26So an informal kind of meet up and then two course lunch, a bit
- 30:31of a celebration around the grant awardee and then then then
- 30:34the keynote speakers do their piece after.
- 30:36Yeah, Yeah. I think this particular time
- 30:39around, I think we've signed off for a grant.
- 30:42I'm not sure if it's 750 or 1000.
- 30:44I'm not can't remember off the top of my head because there's a
- 30:47couple of applications we're reviewing at the moment.
- 30:49But we typically try to give away anything up to 1000 lbs.
- 30:55And as Phil said earlier, that is unconditional.
- 31:00You know, you can do what you want with it.
- 31:01It doesn't come with, you can only spend it on this, that and
- 31:04that because that might not be where they need the support.
- 31:07So like Phil said earlier, you know, Lewis fixed his car which
- 31:12allowed him to go training. Fantastic.
- 31:15Do what you need to do to get where you need to get to.
- 31:17That's what I would say. Absolutely.
- 31:19Absolutely. And the events you obviously
- 31:22mentioned that it's, it's a great opportunity to sort of
- 31:24Business Network, but I don't know if if a couple just wanted
- 31:28to have a lunch date, they could have a kind of extraordinary
- 31:30lunch date, couldn't they? It doesn't have to be on a
- 31:32business level. These are This is a social event
- 31:34as well as a business event, isn't?
- 31:35It it is, it wouldn't be like you'd date night with.
- 31:37Candles and a bottle. Something when 2 straws we're
- 31:40not. We've not got a lady in the
- 31:42Trump situation going on. But.
- 31:44Absolutely. I mean I have got a married
- 31:47couple coming and that's just because they love sport.
- 31:50He's a Posh fan and she's like OK, let's go.
- 31:55So it doesn't have to be just for corporates.
- 31:57I would like to encourage, you know, Posh fans or people that
- 32:01just love football just to come along.
- 32:03Even if you are paying playing football at grass roots or
- 32:07you're in a fibre side club and you think, oh I wouldn't mind a
- 32:09bit of that, then come along because it's not going to be,
- 32:14you know, all Posh and suited and booted.
- 32:16There's no dress code. Come as you are how you are is
- 32:20completely acceptable and just come and have a great time with
- 32:22us. Yeah, and that's why the kind of
- 32:24the events have been kind, you know what can I say are
- 32:27open-ended in terms like I say the dress code that to make just
- 32:30make people feel comfortable. So there's no kind of airs and
- 32:33graces about it or no just just so that people just feel
- 32:36comfortable whatever they're wearing or you know, long as
- 32:38it's not anything that that's going to offend anyone, you can
- 32:41generally come in whatever you want to wear ready.
- 32:43Just not naked. Absolutely, absolutely.
- 32:47Yes, Please no, don't do that. Yeah, absolutely.
- 32:50And I mean, how many events have you been involved in organising
- 32:55over the years? I know you said you would work
- 32:56as a charity for a number of years, so.
- 32:58I would think there was. I've been doing 7 to 8 years and
- 33:04when we first started we used to do 3:00 to 4:00.
- 33:07So I think I'm close. Approaching my 30th event I
- 33:11think. Wow, that's a huge amount.
- 33:12So you've tried and tested formula for you and I dare I say
- 33:17you can almost do it with your eyes closed.
- 33:19I do. That's why you sit.
- 33:21You don't always sat in the right place.
- 33:23No, I'm just kidding because it's always the same.
- 33:27But what I would like to say is if you've been to 1 before and
- 33:32you're thinking it's a copy and paste, it is a little bit of a
- 33:34copy and paste because the formula works and you know, you
- 33:39can sit next to people that you wouldn't have sat next to
- 33:42before. You can start to build great
- 33:43relationships. You just don't know anyone's
- 33:46story just by looking at them. And you can meet new people, you
- 33:50can just make a new friend. Or you could just sit the people
- 33:53that are like minded. They're all there for the same
- 33:56reason, to have a lovely lunch, to listen to some great speakers
- 34:01and, you know, to enhance their day if you like.
- 34:04Interesting fact actually. I am involved with another
- 34:08company that for a short while were shirt sponsors for
- 34:13Peterborough United and Energy Park Peterborough.
- 34:16And we were the shirt sponsors when Craig and Aaron were
- 34:20playing. So it's actually gonna be quite
- 34:21nice for me to be able to say to them, you wore my shirt.
- 34:24Fantastic. Brilliant.
- 34:25Yeah, Well, that's gonna be quite I don't spooky really,
- 34:28isn't it? In that sense that you you can
- 34:30say that to him. And I mean, like you say, it's a
- 34:32copy and paste in terms of format, but the the variation
- 34:35is, is the guest, isn't it? Because I mean, I attended the
- 34:37last event with Colin Henry, the the, the former Scottish and
- 34:40Blackburn Rovers footballer. And, you know, his speech was
- 34:43kind of inspirational comedy, but then it was just there was
- 34:47that point in there about him talking about his wife and his
- 34:49personal situation that that kind of almost brought tears to
- 34:52everyone's eyes as well. So it's a, it's a, it's an
- 34:54amazing sort of experience to to listen to some of these
- 34:58wonderful sports people who you see kind of in the limelight
- 35:01and, and, and, and appear that their lives, they're all glossy
- 35:03and that, but like you say, you don't know what's going on for
- 35:06them in their life. Do it quite often.
- 35:07No, I mean, it will be no surprise to the people that know
- 35:10me that I, I, I'm so soft hearted.
- 35:12I can well up with tears quite easily.
- 35:16But I think Colin Hendry's speech is one of the ones that
- 35:22has impacted me the most. There's been a couple, but what
- 35:26I find is the speakers have immense courage because they are
- 35:31sharing something that is very, very private to them.
- 35:34And we are very privileged to get a glimpse into their life in
- 35:38that moment because they don't know with any explanations to
- 35:41why they were in the media. And the media sometimes can
- 35:45misrepresent their story. And when you hear it from the
- 35:49horse's mouth, as it were, I'm very, very privileged.
- 35:54And we watch some of them struggle.
- 35:56And we think, you know, like you say, their lives are so easy.
- 35:59All, all they've got to do is play football every week.
- 36:01That's all they've got to do. But actually, you know, they're
- 36:04up at 7. They're training really hard.
- 36:06They can't eat this, They can't eat that.
- 36:07They have to weigh in at a certain.
- 36:08And you're thinking, oh, my goodness, you know, their lives
- 36:13are almost not their own. They sacrifice a lot just to
- 36:17represent their team, their country, their region or their
- 36:21club. And yeah, to be part of that
- 36:24actually, even if it's after they've represented that area,
- 36:28is actually a privilege. You're you're being let into
- 36:31their life in a small way and I don't take that lightly.
- 36:34Yeah, absolutely. And, and no matter who, who the
- 36:37speaker is, how famous they are, what they've achieved, they
- 36:39still have the same life problems as anyone else does
- 36:41around family, kids, Yeah, whatever.
- 36:43You mean their car breaks down. Everyone has those.
- 36:45Those things happen, don't they? You.
- 36:49Know what you read my mind did Pam?
- 36:50Yeah, they do. They.
- 36:51They absolutely do. And I think, you know, it's
- 36:56sometimes very nice to see our idols because sometimes we
- 36:59idolize these sports stars, don't we?
- 37:02It's nice to see our idols kind of be just everyday people,
- 37:06normal human beings. I think sometimes we put them up
- 37:10on a pedestal. I mean, we were really hoping to
- 37:13get, I mean, I think someone's called them the Holy Trinity.
- 37:16I wouldn't say that myself, but I think we were hoping to get
- 37:19the lovely George Boyd in as well, but he's not able to make
- 37:22it. And you know, they were a
- 37:24formidable threesome for Posh and these two here.
- 37:28We've got the Mac attack and I actually went to pick up some
- 37:31stationary this morning and someone said you're on the radio
- 37:33tonight, aren't you? And I was like, how did you
- 37:35know? Brilliant.
- 37:37You're becoming a celebrity yourself, Helen.
- 37:40Get stopped in the street, you do.
- 37:43Fantastic. I just really would hope that
- 37:46your listeners would come along and support Sports Aid, get in
- 37:50touch with us. You can e-mail the Sports Aid
- 37:54e-mail address, which I'm sure you'll read out, or they can
- 37:56e-mail me directly. We would love to see you there.
- 37:59And actually, I'm unashamedly going to say we want to sell
- 38:03more tickets. We want the boys who are going
- 38:07to be talking to us to feel that it was worth their while giving
- 38:09up their time to come and talk to us.
- 38:11I want to fill the room. I, I want to sell more tables.
- 38:15I want to sell more tickets. So to say, please, will you hit
- 38:18us up and bite? You really want your support.
- 38:21Is there a maximum capacity for the day?
- 38:24I'll move it to the biggest. Yeah, at the moment.
- 38:27Our maximum capacity. In that room I think can go to
- 38:3190. OK, we're kind of halfway there.
- 38:35I really would like it to be up to the 8090.
- 38:39I just I think the this is the soft side of heaven coming out
- 38:43now. I really would like to be able
- 38:45to give back to these boys and say, look, you gave Posh so
- 38:47much. You've given us so much today
- 38:49and we've we've shown how much we appreciate you by filling the
- 38:52room. And I think their name alone
- 38:55should do that anyway. But we would love people to come
- 38:59and support. Absolutely fantastic.
- 39:02Thank you. And that's Friday.
- 39:03The 20th of June, yeah. Lunch starts at 12:30, runs till
- 39:06about 3, probably arrive around 12:00
- 39:09andticketsarecanbeavailablebyemailingsports8peterborough@hotmail.com Yeah, slight change so.
- 39:17And open networking starts 12/15 to 12/13.
- 39:20Lunch sits down for one. Brilliant.
- 39:23OK, that's still. Around that sort of time, isn't
- 39:25it? So which is fantastic.
- 39:27And thank you very much, Helen. That's been really, really
- 39:31enlightening for us. And thank you for for sharing
- 39:34that. And obviously, all the best with
- 39:35the lunch event and future events as well.
- 39:38Yeah. Thank you very much.
- 39:39And I just want to say you're involved in this in a great way
- 39:42and I'm absolutely loving working with you on the sports
- 39:45say charity. Thank you and Phil and I that
- 39:48opportunity, but we don't do it alone.
- 39:50So for you do for us on our social medias and getting the
- 39:54trophy there and everything. Just thank you for that.
- 39:56No bless you. Thank you very much.
- 39:58Have a great. Weekend and we'll catch up soon.
- 40:00All right. Take care, Helen.
- 40:02See. You bye, bye.
- 40:03Bye, that was. Helen, Rome The.
- 40:05Event organiser for Peterborough Sports Day talking about the
- 40:09forthcoming event on Friday the 20th of June.
- 40:13Right, We'll take another short break and we're back afterwards
- 40:17speaking with myself, Nilesh and Nigel, speaking about Craig

- 42:24You're listening. To PCR Sports.
- 42:36Welcome back to the PCR Sports Show with myself, Dipam, along
- 42:39with Nilesh and Nigel. This week we've just been
- 42:41speaking to Phil Elmer, the chair of Peterborough Sports Aid
- 42:45charity and Helen Rome who's the event organizer, telling us
- 42:49about the great work the charity does locally to support high
- 42:53potential sports people and also the celebrities lunches it puts
- 42:57on. And the next one being Friday
- 42:58the 20th of June featuring the Mactac local Peter United
- 43:03legends Aaron MacLean and Craig McHale Smith Nilesh.
- 43:08What do they that pair mean to the city of the club?
- 43:11I mean, arguably probably the the greatest striking
- 43:14partnership the club ever had or certainly up there.
- 43:17Yeah, it's certainly up there. I think you've got to.
- 43:19Consider the demographics that you'd asked that question to.
- 43:23I'm sure if you asked an older Posh fan, the likes of Terry
- 43:26Bligh scored 52 goals in a season.
- 43:29Derek Dugan as well, you know. So they've been some prolific
- 43:32strikers for Peter P United over the years, but certainly Craig
- 43:36Mckell Smith and Aaron McLean. Great players in their own
- 43:39right, but 2/3 of the Holy Trinity as well.
- 43:43Let's not forget George Boyd in that as well.
- 43:46But from a Michel Smith and Aaron McLean perspective, both
- 43:50of them too really did get Posh firing, certainly from a goal
- 43:55scoring perspective and taking us to the Championship.
- 43:58And yeah, I certainly remember many a goal that Craig Mckell
- 44:02Smith scored and Nara McLean scored.
- 44:03But Craig got one at Old Trafford in the 2011 playoff
- 44:07final against Huddersfield where the ball just took an age across
- 44:12the line. But those magical 7 minutes put
- 44:16Posh into the into the Championship at that point.
- 44:19And yeah, it was certainly a great day, but both of those
- 44:22players have created some great memories over the seasons that
- 44:26they played for Peterborough United.
- 44:28Absolutely. And Nigel, what's your?
- 44:30Memory of those the striking duo Well, I I was, I was going to
- 44:33say about the. Whole traffic gold as well, but
- 44:35it for for me those two and and you you mentioned George as
- 44:40well, but those two really heralded the modern area area of
- 44:45that's the one I'm doing well this week.
- 44:48But that you know that modern era of posh success which has
- 44:51been, you know, Darren Mcanthony agent and bringing young players
- 44:55through and finding those players from non league and then
- 44:59making them stars in the world championship for those guys.
- 45:03Wasn't it? But yeah, it it just that that's
- 45:06what it means to me. I remember of watching Posh
- 45:09regularly back in those days and, you know, you were just
- 45:13attending games thinking those guys were going to score and
- 45:18that just gave you so much confidence.
- 45:20You know, invariably they did, and that was great.
- 45:23But games, games that you you would go to where normally you'd
- 45:27think this is going to be a tough day today, you know, hard
- 45:30day at the office. We're going to do well to come
- 45:31away with anything. And those two would just produce
- 45:34time and time and time again. And Posh have kind of had that
- 45:37like saying in. This modern era, you know,
- 45:39you're talking about the the deadly duo there, the Mac attack
- 45:42and and George Boyd, but there's been others as well.
- 45:44Isn't it that they've kind of almost led the path, created the
- 45:47path for for then strikers to come afterwards and almost kind
- 45:51of implement a similar sort of approach?
- 45:53I know it's been largely down to the club's approach and then
- 45:55what Darren Ferguson has done potentially, but they say they
- 45:59kind of opened that that modern ear of what Posh Posh's forward
- 46:02and attack mean. Yeah, you, you know, mentioned
- 46:052. More Brita Somba longer and
- 46:07Dwight York in there. And Dwight York's just announced
- 46:09his retirement in the last last couple of weeks as well.
- 46:13So yeah, Posh have certainly done well.
- 46:15Dwight Gale, I'm sorry. Dwight Gale, sorry.
- 46:19Dwight Gale, I do. Apologise, thank you for
- 46:22correcting me. But yeah, Dwight Gales just
- 46:25announced his retirement in the last couple of weeks and, you
- 46:28know, both of them again, you know, did really well for
- 46:31Peterborough United and went on to get their big moves that they
- 46:35deserved for their golf scoring exploits.
- 46:38And yeah, what an opportunity this sports aid lunch is for,
- 46:42you know, posh fans, if they're able to on an individual basis,
- 46:46as you say, as fans to come together or the local businesses
- 46:48in in Peterborough to come together and meet Aaron and
- 46:51Craig, 2, you know, two of the nicest blokes you'll ever meet.
- 46:55That's certainly that I've met, had the privilege of spending
- 46:59time in their company from and they're just down to earth lads
- 47:02and, you know, frustrating. I can't be there on the day I'm
- 47:05out way out of Peterborough for the day.
- 47:07But yeah, if you've got the opportunity to go and listen to
- 47:09their stories and no doubt there'll be an anecdote or two
- 47:12in there and that perhaps hasn't been regaled previously.
- 47:16So yeah, huge opportunity to not only hear from Craig and Aaron,
- 47:20but also support local up and coming sportsman.
- 47:24And it's the perfect guest, isn't?
- 47:26It for a Peterborough event or a Peterborough United fan, it's
- 47:29just the perfect guest to go on and listen to what they've got
- 47:31to say. And let's not forget the if
- 47:33I'll. Will be there as well.
- 47:34Yeah, you can see the silverware, the posh.
- 47:36Retained this year, Which? Be amazing so and Craig actually
- 47:39was actually a guest on this show last year there she
- 47:41remember yeah Craig's been. On the show what, 3 or 4 Times
- 47:46Now? I think in terms of the work
- 47:47that he's doing, he's certainly gone down the coaching route,
- 47:52you know, seen in certainly last season and certainly this close
- 47:55season, he's been supporting current professional footballers
- 47:58in in their fitness levels over the summer period and ensuring
- 48:01that they come back when they are officially back for pre
- 48:04season. They're in a in a better
- 48:05position and perhaps one step ahead of their teammates when
- 48:10they do return back in late June.
- 48:12So yeah, Craig's certainly gone down the coaching route where
- 48:15Aaron has forged a fabulous career for himself in in TV
- 48:19broadcasting, you know, Sky Sports, TNT doesn't He's yeah,
- 48:24he's really doing well for himself.
- 48:26And his knowledge of football, certainly at the lower leagues
- 48:29is probably second to none, having come up through the the
- 48:33the from grassroots effectively and now doing really well in
- 48:38front of millions of people in a broadcast audience.
- 48:41Fantastic. Thank you dish.
- 48:43So if you. Want to see Aaron McClain and
- 48:45Craig McCall Smith live speaking?
- 48:48You can come along to the Peterborough Sports Aid charity
- 48:51lunch on Friday the 20th of June starting at 12:15 as Helen
- 48:56mentioned earlier and lunch at 1:00 running till around 3/3/30
- 49:00for tickets.sports8peterborough@hotmail.com
- 49:03Or just search for Peterborough Sports 8 on the socials and and
- 49:07contact them that way. 49 lbs each or £450 for a table of 10.
- 49:11And then as Inesh just mentioned, well worth it.
- 49:14Both wonderful human beings as well as sports people, so it'd
- 49:17be a worthwhile event to get along to.
- 49:20Gents, that's it. Time is up.
- 49:22Thank you very much. Quick mention of next week's
- 49:24show. Yeah, Well, we're going to be
