- 0:01Speaker 1: The Twins win a series for the seventh time in
- 0:04Speaker 1: their last eight. Bailey over returns with a solid start,
- 0:07Speaker 1: although the Twins lost the finale to Cleveland On Thursday,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Ryan Jeffers, getting closer to your return. The MLB Draft
- 0:14Speaker 1: is coming up, and Tom Pohlad speaks about payroll and more.
- 0:18Speaker 1: We'll start with that here today on Twins Cities Territory.
- 0:22Speaker 1: You're Minnesota Twins podcast here on the Foul Territory Network.
- 0:25Speaker 1: I'm Zach Pearce of the Athletic joined by Dan Hayes,
- 0:28Speaker 1: the Athletics, Minnesota Twins beat writer, and Tyler Duffy, longtime
- 0:31Speaker 1: Major leaguer and currently at the Beach. So we'll try
- 0:34Speaker 1: to make this snappy today for Tyler. A lot to
- 0:38Speaker 1: talk about today. Twins another two out of three series
- 0:41Speaker 1: for the seventh time in the last eight. Like I said,
- 0:43Speaker 1: one more series coming up before the All Star break.
- 0:45Speaker 1: We've got injury news in both directions. But we're going
- 0:48Speaker 1: to start today with a conversation that Tom Pohlad had
- 0:52Speaker 1: recently with some reporters. Dan, is that correct?
- 0:56Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a breakfast, breakfast day.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Breakfast with Tom. Yes, all right, it was breakfast with
- 1:04Speaker 1: Tom what did you guys? What did he have for breakfast?
- 1:06Speaker 1: I'm curious. Can you report that coffee he had?
- 1:11Speaker 3: I you know what I I that was approved? Now
- 1:15Speaker 3: he had water and coffee. I think he had been
- 1:18Speaker 3: there early. We got there, you know, at nine o'clock.
- 1:21Speaker 3: By the way, for the US, nine o'clock is early
- 1:24Speaker 3: at the ballpark time. But anyways, yes, yes, and so
- 1:30Speaker 3: we went.
- 1:32Speaker 2: They're about ten of us or so. And look, it's
- 1:37Speaker 2: not like defined, yes, we're buying. It's not that right.
- 1:40Speaker 3: They're not going to say that right now because they
- 1:42Speaker 3: need to know what they're doing on July thirtieth. They
- 1:47Speaker 3: need to know where they are in July thirtieth. My
- 1:49Speaker 3: thought is, if the twins are where they are right
- 1:51Speaker 3: now on July thirtieth, they're going to try to aggressively
- 1:53Speaker 3: be buyers.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Will they be able to achieve that?
- 1:58Speaker 3: I don't know, but I think that the idea that
- 2:00Speaker 3: we got was they want to do that. They see
- 2:04Speaker 3: it as needing to be aggressive now and in the future.
- 2:07Speaker 3: This is Tom Polead's first chance, real chance. That is
- 2:11Speaker 3: how he views it as an owner and knows that
- 2:15Speaker 3: this is an organization that needs to attract its fans.
- 2:19Speaker 3: By being aggressive, by spending in the future, not just
- 2:23Speaker 3: this year, and that they have to do everything they
- 2:26Speaker 3: can to attract those fans. He was asked specifically about
- 2:31Speaker 3: what he's learned over this. You know, he came in
- 2:34Speaker 3: mid December, and what he's learned in these basically six
- 2:37Speaker 3: and a half months as owner, actually it's almost now
- 2:39Speaker 3: seven months as the control person of the team. And
- 2:44Speaker 3: he said that fans who are coming to the park,
- 2:46Speaker 3: he thinks they're getting the energy and that they're enjoying
- 2:49Speaker 3: the product, but that they need to do a better
- 2:51Speaker 3: job of attracting more of those fans. And he recognizes
- 2:54Speaker 3: it that they're not doing as well as they should be,
- 2:56Speaker 3: and not by not close to what they want to do.
- 3:00Speaker 3: With these new control limited partnership groups. The goal is
- 3:05Speaker 3: to be going forward and not backwards.
- 3:07Speaker 2: You know.
- 3:08Speaker 3: The idea of rebuilding is not something they're interested in. Basically,
- 3:12Speaker 3: it is that they want to go forward and be
- 3:15Speaker 3: aggressive and as attractive as they can be. And I
- 3:18Speaker 3: have some quotes I want to read. The one is
- 3:22Speaker 3: about this year, and I'm going to bust the glasses
- 3:24Speaker 3: out for this. He said, we might have a magical
- 3:27Speaker 3: year this year, but at one hundred million dollar payroll
- 3:30Speaker 3: is not going to get the job done. For trying
- 3:32Speaker 3: to accomplish the things that we want to accomplish, he said,
- 3:36Speaker 3: we've got to be competitive consistently, and that's a baseline.
- 3:40Speaker 3: He said, I think the difference between where we've been
- 3:43Speaker 3: and where we're going is the baramerner for success in
- 3:46Speaker 3: the passes, let's just try to be competitive. The barer
- 3:50Speaker 3: for success going forward is let's win a championship. And
- 3:54Speaker 3: he said that's going to require us to make decisions,
- 3:56Speaker 3: whether it's at the trade deadline or in the off season,
- 3:59Speaker 3: and that that those moves look probably pretty different than
- 4:03Speaker 3: decisions that they've made in the past. And I asked
- 4:06Speaker 3: the question. I said, look, how is like what you've
- 4:10Speaker 3: seen with the fans so far? Sorry for the glare
- 4:13Speaker 3: of there, how is what you've seen with the fans
- 4:15Speaker 3: so far?
- 4:17Speaker 2: You know?
- 4:17Speaker 3: And it's lagging, I mean, their attendance is down again.
- 4:19Speaker 3: And I said, how could that potentially impact future decisions
- 4:24Speaker 3: like this plan that you guys have going forward to
- 4:27Speaker 3: be aggressive and spent. And he said it doesn't. He said,
- 4:31Speaker 3: we're not going back. He said, this is a build
- 4:34Speaker 3: and they will come situation. I thought that was a
- 4:36Speaker 3: really good, interesting quote. He said, the fans are not
- 4:39Speaker 3: going to come back based on words.
- 4:42Speaker 2: They're going to come.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Back once they see investment and success on the field.
- 4:46Speaker 3: I know that, and I think that sets them up
- 4:49Speaker 3: to be in a spot where if we are, if
- 4:54Speaker 3: we see the Twins two games out in the division
- 4:56Speaker 3: in three weeks at the end of July and to
- 5:01Speaker 3: a couple days before the deadline, they're going to do
- 5:03Speaker 3: everything they can to add I don't know that.
- 5:05Speaker 2: It's gonna be massive moves.
- 5:06Speaker 3: I doubt that we see them trade like a Kaitlyn
- 5:09Speaker 3: Culpepper or Walker Jenkins and get rid of those guys.
- 5:14Speaker 3: But I do think that they're going to do everything
- 5:15Speaker 3: they can to try and, you know, enhance this roster
- 5:19Speaker 3: because he sees a lot of fun. He's been around
- 5:21Speaker 3: this team a lot, and even Duff when we were
- 5:24Speaker 3: in Houston, Duff saw him down in the clubhouse and
- 5:28Speaker 3: maybe got a brief introduction. But he's been around in
- 5:32Speaker 3: the clubhouse a lot. He doesn't go in the clubhouse,
- 5:36Speaker 3: but he will stand outside of it and greet guys.
- 5:40Speaker 3: He's on the field a lot. He's in the manager's
- 5:43Speaker 3: office after games. Sometimes he's very hands on. It's unlike
- 5:46Speaker 3: anything I've seen in the nine years I've covered this team.
- 5:50Speaker 3: I would say that Joe Pollad and Jim Pollad were
- 5:53Speaker 3: always at the ballpark, but I rarely saw them on
- 5:56Speaker 3: the in the clubhouse, if ever. So you know, there's
- 6:01Speaker 3: a lot of differences. I would believe this when I
- 6:06Speaker 3: see it, you know what I mean. It's good words, yeah,
- 6:09Speaker 3: it's encouraging words. But but their words that I've never
- 6:13Speaker 3: heard them say before, And exactly that's the interesting part.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Like it was easy to roll my eyes at everything
- 6:19Speaker 1: you were saying until you read the quotes that like,
- 6:23Speaker 1: there wasn't a lot of gray area in what he said.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Now will he back it up? I don't know. But
- 6:27Speaker 1: Tyler as a player, like you're obviously listening to that
- 6:30Speaker 1: stuff and taking note when you hear an owe er
- 6:32Speaker 1: talk like that, right, Yeah, And it's it's one especially
- 6:38Speaker 1: considering where they are with guys and like guys we've
- 6:40Speaker 1: already kind of talked about them moving. That makes those
- 6:43Speaker 1: moves more realistic to try and get a big leaguer,
- 6:46Speaker 1: you know, versus trading for prospects or whatever. That sounds like, hey,
- 6:50Speaker 1: we could take on some salary in a trade for
- 6:53Speaker 1: someone who's going to help us get better. You know,
- 6:54Speaker 1: they're not going to shy away from.
- 6:57Speaker 4: They're not gonna shy away from a guy because maybe
- 7:01Speaker 4: he's moving money. You know, whether it be a starting
- 7:04Speaker 4: pitcher or back in both guy that might be available
- 7:08Speaker 4: now a move like that that may take on a
- 7:10Speaker 4: little extra money, that sounds like they're not going to
- 7:13Speaker 4: shy away from it. And then moving forward, you know,
- 7:16Speaker 4: the off season, you know you've got guys. You know,
- 7:18Speaker 4: Joe Ryan's going to be making a lot of money
- 7:20Speaker 4: if he's still around. You know, historically speaking guys, they
- 7:23Speaker 4: may not have been as inclined to hang on to
- 7:26Speaker 4: or even extend. That sounds like they kind of want
- 7:29Speaker 4: to make some moves happen. And that's as a player
- 7:32Speaker 4: like that's exciting because that means, hey, we might get
- 7:35Speaker 4: something cool come deadline time. You know, you obviously hope
- 7:38Speaker 4: it meshes well in Gel's You know, sometimes teams make
- 7:41Speaker 4: trades and it gets worse.
- 7:43Speaker 5: You know, when on paper is supposed to be better.
- 7:44Speaker 4: But when you hear an owner saying those things and
- 7:48Speaker 4: you know, obviously being present, it feels like he's trying
- 7:51Speaker 4: to get the pulse of that clubhouse, just like Shelty
- 7:53Speaker 4: is as a manager.
- 7:54Speaker 5: You know, he wants to be involved.
- 7:57Speaker 4: You know, he's doing stuff on the broadcast with all
- 7:59Speaker 4: the the alumni that we're doing it this week. You know,
- 8:02Speaker 4: he's he's doing all the right things, and the quotes
- 8:05Speaker 4: back it up. So it seems like it's a real,
- 8:09Speaker 4: you know, changing of the tide. And you know they,
- 8:12Speaker 4: like you said, if you build it, they will come,
- 8:14Speaker 4: you know, it is It's one of those things that
- 8:16Speaker 4: kind of has to happen or it's just it's not.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Going to work.
- 8:18Speaker 4: And you know, it's it's exciting to hear those things
- 8:22Speaker 4: from from an owner, especially because he's one holding the
- 8:24Speaker 4: keys to the castle, so without him, nothing can happen.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Of the two teams who are spending three hundred million
- 8:32Speaker 1: dollars on their payroll, it's not going well for one
- 8:37Speaker 1: of them. That would be the New York Mets. And actually,
- 8:41Speaker 1: of the sixteen top opening day payrolls in baseball, only
- 8:46Speaker 1: five of them are currently in playoff position, and the
- 8:49Speaker 1: Twins are doing better than all of the other eleven
- 8:52Speaker 1: in the standing. So my point is not don't spend
- 8:56Speaker 1: money but they're remarkably close to compare pitive despite not
- 9:01Speaker 1: spending money, which which makes which to me is an
- 9:05Speaker 1: opportunity to be smart from here to build the team
- 9:08Speaker 1: rather than tear it down. Dan, That's what I would say.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Anyway, when you have a lot of young, affordable talent,
- 9:14Speaker 3: like the Twins do, you can then build around it.
- 9:19Speaker 3: And that's the great part of having like fifteen guys
- 9:22Speaker 3: that are making close to the minimum, which the Twins
- 9:25Speaker 3: have a ton of guys right now who are making
- 9:27Speaker 3: close to the minimum. You have this platform for success,
- 9:31Speaker 3: then you can enhance your roster by taking shots and
- 9:34Speaker 3: not hamstringing your roster. Look, the Twins are always gonna
- 9:39Speaker 3: be that organization that has to be smart with the
- 9:42Speaker 3: big spends because they can't afford to have Garrett Cole
- 9:46Speaker 3: out for eighteen months making thirty six million dollars a year,
- 9:50Speaker 3: right Like, It's it's their challenge when they're big spends
- 9:53Speaker 3: like Pablo Lopez being on the AL right now, twenty
- 9:56Speaker 3: one percent of their payroll right now is on the
- 9:59Speaker 3: IL and that's that's it.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Hurts them and hamstrings.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Them, but they should have room for that because of
- 10:06Speaker 3: how young the roster is right now, and I think
- 10:09Speaker 3: they're they're kind of I agree with you. There's no
- 10:12Speaker 3: correlation to spending meaning winning like direct correlation. It doesn't
- 10:18Speaker 3: mean if you have a three hundred million dollar payroll
- 10:20Speaker 3: you're going to win, but it sure helps, and like
- 10:23Speaker 3: you should be in that that mind. And I think
- 10:26Speaker 3: all of this comes from you know, he said at
- 10:29Speaker 3: one point on time being of the essence. I think
- 10:32Speaker 3: it's hard for him not to see it. That was
- 10:34Speaker 3: a big series against Cleveland to open this homestand going
- 10:36Speaker 3: into the All Star break, and there were seventeen thousand
- 10:39Speaker 3: on Monday. I had a reporter text me and be like,
- 10:43Speaker 3: I'm tuning in. Is is there a weather thing? And
- 10:45Speaker 3: I'm like, no, no, that's just.
- 10:47Speaker 2: That's the crowd.
- 10:48Speaker 3: The national reporter of text and there was fourteen thousand,
- 10:52Speaker 3: nine hundred on Tuesday and yesterday was twenty two thousand.
- 10:55Speaker 3: They drew sixty one sixty two thousand for a critical
- 10:58Speaker 3: series series in which they won games and gain ground
- 11:03Speaker 3: on in the division. They moved within two of the
- 11:07Speaker 3: White Sox and Guardians, who are tied at first for
- 11:09Speaker 3: first place. So I think this is just a recognition
- 11:12Speaker 3: right now that man, we are still you know, we're trying.
- 11:14Speaker 3: We're having this fun season, but people are tuning this
- 11:17Speaker 3: out and we need to we need to do more.
- 11:19Speaker 3: And I just you know, it's interesting to hear him
- 11:24Speaker 3: say it.
- 11:24Speaker 2: You got to back it up, you got to back
- 11:26Speaker 2: it up. He said this all along.
- 11:29Speaker 3: And again it's there's no firm commitment to buying right
- 11:33Speaker 3: now because he wasn't going to put Jeremy's ole in
- 11:36Speaker 3: a spot where if the Twins lose ten of their
- 11:39Speaker 3: next twelve and the recommendation is we got to sell
- 11:43Speaker 3: off you know, some of these pieces. He's not going
- 11:46Speaker 3: to put him in a spot where it's like, no,
- 11:47Speaker 3: but we're at it, you know. So he's not making
- 11:49Speaker 3: any declarations about where they are because I think the
- 11:53Speaker 3: one thing that's helped is he's he's getting some baseball
- 11:55Speaker 3: IQ by being around this year. He really wanted to
- 11:58Speaker 3: be hands on and immerse himself because he was a novice.
- 12:01Speaker 2: As much as he's been in this family, he was
- 12:04Speaker 2: not focused on baseball guy. It was not you know everybody.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Joe Joe Pole adds the guy that was around the
- 12:11Speaker 3: franchise a lot more, doing internships, every kind of role
- 12:15Speaker 3: to soak up every aspect of the business. Tom polead
- 12:19Speaker 3: was I think an internship with MLB one year, you know,
- 12:23Speaker 3: maybe a decade and a half ago, and he really
- 12:26Speaker 3: was involved in the other family businesses. So I think
- 12:29Speaker 3: he had a lot to learn. And what he's learned
- 12:31Speaker 3: is that, you know, he didn't know that much. And
- 12:35Speaker 3: you know, he was talking about being competitive, and I
- 12:37Speaker 3: think he realizes how much the Twins have had go
- 12:41Speaker 3: right for them this year, in spite of some of
- 12:43Speaker 3: their injuries to critical players, that.
- 12:46Speaker 2: This team is overachieving.
- 12:47Speaker 3: He did mention that he said he thought they were
- 12:49Speaker 3: overachieving based on chemistry, based on you know, a lot
- 12:54Speaker 3: of things that have happened through their desire for winning
- 12:59Speaker 3: with each other. That this group likes each other, the
- 13:01Speaker 3: coaching staff is getting a ton out of the group.
- 13:04Speaker 3: So I you know, that was early on. Some of
- 13:08Speaker 3: the things to be skeptical that he was saying was like, hey,
- 13:10Speaker 3: we're gonna be competitive this year. It's like at the time,
- 13:13Speaker 3: I remember thinking, Tom, have you seen your bullpen?
- 13:16Speaker 2: Tom? Have you? And he knows, he knows the bullpen
- 13:19Speaker 2: needs to be fixed.
- 13:20Speaker 3: And I mean, man, if they had a if they
- 13:22Speaker 3: had had a Duran at the start of the season
- 13:26Speaker 3: or a Louis Varland at the start of the season,
- 13:30Speaker 3: and this team is in.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Place games ahead. What you say that again, Duff.
- 13:37Speaker 5: Is with Chapman.
- 13:38Speaker 4: I feel like I've seen his picture as a possible
- 13:40Speaker 4: trade beats this year and go get.
- 13:42Speaker 2: I don't, I don't.
- 13:43Speaker 3: I don't see the Madden World as Chapman. But he
- 13:46Speaker 3: uh like someone like that. But you know, I mean
- 13:50Speaker 3: like there is recognition that this is not working as
- 13:55Speaker 3: they would like it too with the fans, and that
- 13:58Speaker 3: they need to be a team that is so exciting
- 14:01Speaker 3: that they re energize that fan base, and it's going
- 14:04Speaker 3: to take spending and winning.
- 14:06Speaker 1: It's a bit of a crossroads. I mean, you brought
- 14:09Speaker 1: up Pablo Lopez. Also, ten million dollars of that payroll
- 14:12Speaker 1: is going to Carlos Korea, who isn't playing for the team.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Their MVP candidate Buxton is on the il Anthony Bonda
- 14:19Speaker 1: lost for the season, one of their reliable bullpen arms.
- 14:22Speaker 1: And yet right around five hundred might be there after
- 14:25Speaker 1: this weekend. And if you tear that down, like people
- 14:30Speaker 1: would dream to have that starting point with this amount
- 14:32Speaker 1: of money being spent on the team, you're basically paying
- 14:34Speaker 1: seventy million dollars to the players who are on the field,
- 14:37Speaker 1: and you're in the playoff contention, Like, this is not
- 14:39Speaker 1: something you should tear down. He seems to recognize that, right,
- 14:45Speaker 1: we'll see what happens. We'll take a break, we'll talk
- 14:47Speaker 1: about the rest of the Cleveland series, the draft, the
- 14:51Speaker 1: Angels coming into town. If you like what you hear,

- 16:22Speaker 1: We love it. So Yeah, the Twins a couple weeks
- 16:27Speaker 1: to go before we'll probably start seeing what the strategy
- 16:30Speaker 1: is the deadline tyler, But it sure feels like this
- 16:34Speaker 1: team is very very close to being in serious contention
- 16:38Speaker 1: in the al Yeah.
- 16:40Speaker 4: And to the Dan's point before the break was, you
- 16:43Speaker 4: know they want to spend some money, and the easiest
- 16:47Speaker 4: way to not spend all of the money and still
- 16:49Speaker 4: get better is you know, we've talked about the bullpen
- 16:52Speaker 4: all year and it struggles at times, and you know,
- 16:55Speaker 4: go get whether it's a stopper or somebody a closer
- 16:59Speaker 4: that's available, maybe a younger guy. You've got space on
- 17:03Speaker 4: the salary front, and you've got extra guys. You can
- 17:06Speaker 4: make a move for a reliever that's not going to
- 17:08Speaker 4: be a huge contract. It's not going to hamstring you,
- 17:12Speaker 4: you know, anything like that, and it's a simple move,
- 17:14Speaker 4: that's a plug and play and you just go. You know,
- 17:16Speaker 4: those guys I feel like are the easiest to move.
- 17:19Speaker 4: You know, it's you go sit in a bullpen every
- 17:20Speaker 4: day anyways, it's no different. It's not like plugging in
- 17:23Speaker 4: a new shortstop overnight or a summerfielder.
- 17:26Speaker 2: It's it's a.
- 17:26Speaker 4: Bullpen arm they work every day and you just should say, hey, man,
- 17:31Speaker 4: the eighth inning is yours or the ninth inning or
- 17:33Speaker 4: whatever they want to pitch, and you let them have
- 17:35Speaker 4: it the rest of the year, and odds are it's
- 17:37Speaker 4: going to work out because it's it's comfortability for guys
- 17:40Speaker 4: and it just shures up the spot that we've needed
- 17:43Speaker 4: all year. And you know again it's it's a non
- 17:46Speaker 4: necessarily expensive move that can make a huge impact overnight.
- 17:51Speaker 1: It's the one biggest weakness.
- 17:53Speaker 2: It is, and but it's funny.
- 17:55Speaker 3: One of the the one part that I like about
- 17:57Speaker 3: the open tryouts per se that they've held is Joandros
- 18:02Speaker 3: Gomez has has found a way to become a guy.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Like his appearance Tuesday night he came in for or
- 18:08Speaker 3: Monday night. It was when he came in just for
- 18:11Speaker 3: the one batter and it was you know, the time
- 18:15Speaker 3: run was.
- 18:15Speaker 2: At the plate and it was boom, boom boom.
- 18:18Speaker 3: Three off speed, pitches up in the zone, strikeout, walk
- 18:21Speaker 3: off the field.
- 18:22Speaker 2: He's found a way to become a guy. Andrew Morris
- 18:25Speaker 2: has found a way. Is cutter. He's thrown in a
- 18:27Speaker 2: lot more. He's become a guy.
- 18:29Speaker 3: And when you have those two already in place, it's
- 18:33Speaker 3: not like the twins have to go out and get
- 18:36Speaker 3: the closer. Getting that closer that would be great, I
- 18:38Speaker 3: get it. But you can keep those guys build around that.
- 18:43Speaker 3: Just get more guys, get like a hunter. Gadis not
- 18:46Speaker 3: the hunter. Gaddis is available, but you don't need to
- 18:48Speaker 3: get Cade Smith.
- 18:49Speaker 2: You don't.
- 18:50Speaker 3: You just get two guys that can get in there
- 18:53Speaker 3: and be sixth, seventh inning guys and they're reliable guys
- 18:57Speaker 3: for Derek Shelton. Maybe get a lefty that Anthony Bonda.
- 19:01Speaker 3: You mentioned that earlier on the shows Act. We saw
- 19:03Speaker 3: Anthony Bonda in the clubhouse yesterday. He was arm in
- 19:06Speaker 3: a sling. The latter resulted in a surgery. We did
- 19:10Speaker 3: not know there were surgery that just we'd heard he
- 19:12Speaker 3: was out for months, not weeks. He's out for nine months.
- 19:15Speaker 3: He's out till. He won't be back till spring training.
- 19:18Speaker 3: Should be ready at spring training next year. So you
- 19:20Speaker 3: can't count on him anymore, unfortunately, because he was becoming
- 19:25Speaker 3: a guy for this team. So you need more guys
- 19:28Speaker 3: and you don't. That's the relievers are always prospect expensive
- 19:35Speaker 3: at the trade deadline, doesn't matter like you're doesn't matter
- 19:38Speaker 3: about the salary. You've seen guys go and get traded.
- 19:43Speaker 3: But at this point, just give them more arms to
- 19:46Speaker 3: work with and build around and have four or five guys,
- 19:50Speaker 3: and then you push some of your other guys down
- 19:53Speaker 3: into easier, lesser roles and give them time to develop.
- 19:56Speaker 3: Because I see Eric Gorsey's potential, but I also think
- 20:00Speaker 3: Eric Wrzy's a rookie, and like, give him time to
- 20:03Speaker 3: get comfortable before you have to throw him into every big,
- 20:07Speaker 3: high leverage situation. In the six or seventh INNY, I like,
- 20:11Speaker 3: I like the makeup of the group, but I really
- 20:14Speaker 3: like that Morris and Gomez are there. It's not like
- 20:17Speaker 3: they have to rebuild it entirely from scratch. And that's
- 20:20Speaker 3: been one benefit of having all these undefined roles throughout
- 20:24Speaker 3: the years that you've found some definition and they're not
- 20:28Speaker 3: starting from a total just keep bridging and building the
- 20:32Speaker 3: bridge essentially, because the bridge has already started, the project
- 20:36Speaker 3: is underway.
- 20:39Speaker 1: I've been staring at Tyler's background this whole time and
- 20:43Speaker 1: just noticed that that I thought that was like an actual,
- 20:46Speaker 1: you know, city mandated hurricane sign on the wall, but
- 20:49Speaker 1: actually it just says the hurricane evacuation plan. Grab beer,
- 20:52Speaker 1: run like hell.
- 20:53Speaker 5: Run like hell.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Good Smart, Smart Twins. As we mentioned, seventh series win
- 21:02Speaker 1: in the last eight. One of those was a sweep
- 21:05Speaker 1: the Texas series. The other six until this one, the
- 21:11Speaker 1: previous five of them that had been two out of three,
- 21:13Speaker 1: and they all featured the Twins winning the final game
- 21:15Speaker 1: of the series to break the split, which was interesting
- 21:19Speaker 1: this time going for the sweep on Thursday, didn't get it.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Dan always a bummer to come up short in that situation,
- 21:25Speaker 1: but overall successful three days for the Twins and especially
- 21:30Speaker 1: some nice to see Bailey oberback on the mount Thursday
- 21:32Speaker 1: and doing well.
- 21:34Speaker 3: Yeah, Thursday felt like didn't have a chance because Gavin
- 21:37Speaker 3: Williams was so good.
- 21:38Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that wasn't fair, Like, don't bring such a
- 21:41Speaker 1: good picture power Sweeper. Twins are supposed to miss the good.
- 21:45Speaker 3: Pictures right, Like power Sweeper was diving at the like
- 21:51Speaker 3: left these back feet and it was just nasty all day.
- 21:56Speaker 3: He was outstanding and really was like was no hit
- 22:00Speaker 3: in perfect game into the fifth until Royce dropped the
- 22:04Speaker 3: two bunt and foul bund attempts and then parachuted the
- 22:07Speaker 3: single to right and that put together one inning. They
- 22:10Speaker 3: had one shot for real and they got the one
- 22:12Speaker 3: run out of it, and that was unfortunate because that's
- 22:15Speaker 3: your make or break point with a pitcher going that good,
- 22:18Speaker 3: and he's looked like that at times against the Twins before,
- 22:20Speaker 3: but that's one of the better ones. And then you
- 22:22Speaker 3: know they bring out Gaddis and Kate Smith, and it's
- 22:24Speaker 3: just that's a pretty good combo for a victory for Cleveland,
- 22:27Speaker 3: but it doesn't overshadow like like you said, Bailey was
- 22:31Speaker 3: really good. Bailey was spinning the ball early on. It
- 22:35Speaker 3: looked like he lost his change up, but he found
- 22:37Speaker 3: it again. His his sweeper was good. He had some
- 22:41Speaker 3: real swing and miss stuff, and he was manipulating the
- 22:44Speaker 3: ball like we know Bailey yogurt to do. And when
- 22:47Speaker 3: he left it was one to one. So he did
- 22:49Speaker 3: his his part. They got to Kendrick Rojas a little bit,
- 22:54Speaker 3: and so I've learned it's not Wu, It's it's ooh
- 22:59Speaker 3: sook gun. There's the w is silent. So he made
- 23:02Speaker 3: his debut and he got a nice strikeout in there.
- 23:04Speaker 3: He gave up a home run too, but welcome the
- 23:07Speaker 3: Rojas gave up three right exactly a major league debut
- 23:11Speaker 3: for him, and so you know, there were there were
- 23:15Speaker 3: Bailey was really encouraging. But I thought the Tuesday game
- 23:19Speaker 3: was outstanding in one way. How many times it looked
- 23:23Speaker 3: like the Twins should have lost that game on Tuesday,
- 23:25Speaker 3: Nips his blister burst in that fourth inning. He gave
- 23:30Speaker 3: up three runs apparently he was bleeding and it bled
- 23:33Speaker 3: on to the umpire who was checking his hand at
- 23:36Speaker 3: one point.
- 23:37Speaker 1: That was the Wednesday game?
- 23:40Speaker 2: Was that Wednesday? Yes, it was Wednesday.
- 23:43Speaker 3: Thursday series my bad, but but Wednesday he he you know,
- 23:48Speaker 3: he struggled, he hit that spot where he go up three,
- 23:51Speaker 3: and then Eric Orzy came in and walked the first
- 23:53Speaker 3: two in the sixth in na I believe it was,
- 23:56Speaker 3: and those two runs came around the score and Cleveland
- 23:59Speaker 3: pulled away again. And then the Twins rally like the
- 24:01Speaker 3: Twins rallied multiple times in that and and had some
- 24:05Speaker 3: nice moments, said the five walk in to tie the
- 24:07Speaker 3: game where Cleveland just had no Cleveland relievers had no
- 24:11Speaker 3: idea where the ball was going.
- 24:13Speaker 2: That was That was crazy. But the cool, the very
- 24:16Speaker 2: cool part about it was.
- 24:17Speaker 3: Alan Roaden finally getting his moment with the swage. And look,
- 24:23Speaker 3: there should be no guy that Twins fans want to
- 24:26Speaker 3: root for more than him, because he's the guy who's
- 24:29Speaker 3: He and Rojas are the guys that came over for
- 24:31Speaker 3: Louis Arland. The hated trade, right, pardon me, the trade loads.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Why do we trade the local guy with his bullpen?
- 24:44Speaker 3: Would all the arguments make sense. There's nothing wrong with
- 24:48Speaker 3: being upset about the Louis Arland trade, but also imagine
- 24:53Speaker 3: being the guys that came back in the Louis Arland
- 24:55Speaker 3: trade and knowing how much the deal that brought you
- 24:58Speaker 3: to town is low by the fan base and is
- 25:01Speaker 3: brought up at every spot. Alan Roaden was the first
- 25:04Speaker 3: guy last year that walked in the door after the
- 25:06Speaker 3: trade deadline in Cleveland.
- 25:08Speaker 2: First guy that was acquired.
- 25:09Speaker 3: Out of all the people they got in the deadline,
- 25:11Speaker 3: he's the only one that was there the day after.
- 25:14Speaker 3: So he's like the face of the next wave, and
- 25:18Speaker 3: it was like he wanted to succeed. I think he
- 25:22Speaker 3: started in centerfield that day. He maybe got one for five.
- 25:27Speaker 3: He was not good for his forty played appearances. You know,
- 25:31Speaker 3: this is a guy that's a very polished minor league hitter,
- 25:34Speaker 3: three hundred average for his career, like an eight to
- 25:36Speaker 3: fifty seven ops in the minors first career, and when
- 25:39Speaker 3: we're talking about fifteen hundred at bats lots of time,
- 25:42Speaker 3: he's twenty seven.
- 25:44Speaker 2: This was his shot.
- 25:44Speaker 3: He'd been no opportunities in Toronto and it was his shot,
- 25:48Speaker 3: and he came up and he got forty played appearances.
- 25:50Speaker 3: He was terrible in those forty play appearances. And his
- 25:53Speaker 3: season ended with UCLA UCLA or sorry ucl thumb surgery
- 26:00Speaker 3: and he ends on the ilose and then he's not
- 26:03Speaker 3: like everybody's like, oh, he's gonna make the roster and
- 26:05Speaker 3: opening day, then they keep Outman, they bring back Larnick.
- 26:09Speaker 3: Larnick's worked out great. Outman didn't work out so great.
- 26:12Speaker 3: But Rodin starts the Triple A despite having a very
- 26:14Speaker 3: good spring, and there's more disappointment. And then he gets
- 26:18Speaker 3: hurt on April twenty second and tears his labram in
- 26:21Speaker 3: his non throwing shoulder and misses six weeks and during
- 26:26Speaker 3: that period they release Outman. During that period, Wallner gets
- 26:31Speaker 3: sent down. There are opportunities for him to have come up.
- 26:34Speaker 3: He didn't get those opportunities because he's hurt and rehabbing.
- 26:37Speaker 3: Had a good month at Triple A. They finally had
- 26:40Speaker 3: a spot when Buckston went on the il he gets
- 26:42Speaker 3: to start. Finally he gets the big moment. Just there
- 26:46Speaker 3: must have been there was so much joy. If you've
- 26:48Speaker 3: seen the photos or the videos, like there's a great
- 26:51Speaker 3: photo on my story where he's just like roaring, like
- 26:55Speaker 3: like like the rocky moment kind of thing the guy's
- 27:00Speaker 3: and like his celebration didn't occur at second base.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Or first base.
- 27:04Speaker 5: His celebration field.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Was in center field. I asked Tyler Fedco because he
- 27:11Speaker 2: was the guy that ran out there.
- 27:12Speaker 3: Those two love each other, that played together at Triple A,
- 27:15Speaker 3: and Fedco was like, you celebrate with your friends. You
- 27:19Speaker 3: want the best for them, And that's awesome to hear
- 27:21Speaker 3: because Fedco is going through it himself right now, still
- 27:24Speaker 3: riding the o for being up after a couple of weeks.
- 27:27Speaker 3: And Fedco was like, I asked how far he went
- 27:30Speaker 3: and He's like, I went much further than I thought
- 27:32Speaker 3: I was gonna have to.
- 27:33Speaker 2: But you know, they they.
- 27:35Speaker 3: Celebrated wildly, and it was such a cool moment because
- 27:38Speaker 3: it represented the kind of games the Twins have played
- 27:40Speaker 3: all year where they just keep coming back and they
- 27:44Speaker 3: have this undying spirit that drives them. And it happened
- 27:48Speaker 3: for a guy who was really deserving of the moment
- 27:50Speaker 3: and it was his first chance, and so I thought
- 27:53Speaker 3: that was kind of a signature victory that of course
- 27:56Speaker 3: all started with the championship TV starting that Colorado.
- 28:01Speaker 1: You know, well what I like, So the Twins had
- 28:06Speaker 1: it was five three going in the bottom of the seventh.
- 28:07Speaker 1: The Twins tied it with those walks, but they still
- 28:10Speaker 1: had bases loaded one out and didn't get any more
- 28:12Speaker 1: out of it. Then they loaded the bases in the eighth.
- 28:14Speaker 1: Didn't get anything out of it, yep, So they go to.
- 28:16Speaker 2: The bottom of the knife in that spot in the eighth.
- 28:19Speaker 1: Se they load the bases. Lukeishil drew the walk to
- 28:23Speaker 1: load the bases. Rodent comes up, the count goes two oh,
- 28:27Speaker 1: which and just from the start, he looked like he
- 28:31Speaker 1: looked comfortable. He did not look like, oh ship, I'm
- 28:34Speaker 1: in a big moment. Oh now, I swore for the
- 28:36Speaker 1: first time on this podcast.
- 28:37Speaker 2: Yes.
- 28:38Speaker 3: Uh.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Then he then he watched the next two pitches for strikes,
- 28:42Speaker 1: which I understand walk wins the game. Like uh. Then
- 28:45Speaker 1: he laid laid off a sweeper on two to full count.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Ye fouled off three straight pitches before stroking the one
- 28:52Speaker 1: off the wall on right field and Tyler just like I.
- 28:56Speaker 1: The first reaction to any fan seeing the recent call
- 29:00Speaker 1: up come up in the big spot as a crap.
- 29:02Speaker 1: But I don't know that the Twins could have had
- 29:03Speaker 1: a better person they're the way he would just like handled.
- 29:05Speaker 4: Himself in like like you said, he looked calm and
- 29:09Speaker 4: collected in the moment. You know, he's he's got the
- 29:12Speaker 4: bats in the minor leagues. It's not for the lack
- 29:15Speaker 4: of games played anything. He was simply this year. He
- 29:17Speaker 4: was just hurt when it was his turn and he
- 29:20Speaker 4: got his chance. And you know that's a spot where
- 29:23Speaker 4: some guys get a little antsy and they swing and
- 29:25Speaker 4: stuff maybe they shouldn't or whatever, And he was ready
- 29:29Speaker 4: for that at bat, ready for the moment.
- 29:30Speaker 1: You know.
- 29:31Speaker 4: Good good on the coaches who were with him helping him.
- 29:33Speaker 4: I'm sure he's talking to teammates getting ready to face
- 29:36Speaker 4: you know, the guy that inning, it was the culmination
- 29:39Speaker 4: of a lot of work for him. And you know,
- 29:40Speaker 4: to be able to hit a ball and not I'll
- 29:42Speaker 4: give him a lot of credit, not just hitting like
- 29:44Speaker 4: a bleeder, to walk it off like you had a
- 29:46Speaker 4: rocket right the right center field ball as a homer.
- 29:49Speaker 4: Probably that's a walk off homer in a lot of stadiums.
- 29:53Speaker 4: So he absolutely smashed that ball, you know, and the
- 29:56Speaker 4: guys were obviously fired up. I mean, when the whole
- 29:58Speaker 4: team's chasing you, I do pre shade and taking it
- 30:00Speaker 4: to center and trying to get closer to the bullpen guys,
- 30:03Speaker 4: because the worst part of a walkoff is being in
- 30:06Speaker 4: the bullpen and you're like, ooo, yeah we won, We'll
- 30:10Speaker 4: miss the whole party. You know, you get to the
- 30:12Speaker 4: locker in ten minutes after it's over with.
- 30:14Speaker 5: But you know, it was.
- 30:16Speaker 4: It was awesome to see, and it's such a in
- 30:18Speaker 4: a big, huge series, like against Cleveland the team, you
- 30:21Speaker 4: got a beat to do that, Like.
- 30:22Speaker 5: That's that's all you could ask for.
- 30:24Speaker 1: And like when you look at the locations of those
- 30:27Speaker 1: last four pitches that he was thrown, they were all
- 30:30Speaker 1: fastballs locked in. He knew they had to be fastballs
- 30:33Speaker 1: because you can't walk the guy. The game's over the
- 30:35Speaker 1: first three at least according to this chart I'm looking at,
- 30:38Speaker 1: we're kind of on the edges on the corners somewhere.
- 30:41Speaker 1: And then the one he smoked was middle middle, and like,
- 30:44Speaker 1: you know, you like, if you if you can follow
- 30:46Speaker 1: him off, if you can hold off long enough, you're
- 30:47Speaker 1: eventually going to get one that's either out of the
- 30:49Speaker 1: zone or that you can that you can do something
- 30:51Speaker 1: with him. And he did so, and then he didn't
- 30:53Speaker 1: miss it, didn't miss it. Great stuff. We'll take a break.
- 30:56Speaker 1: We'll come back. Ryan, Jeffers and the draft still to
- 30:59Speaker 1: get in and this show. Sorry, Tyler, the beach will
- 31:01Speaker 1: have to wait just a little bit longer. We'll be
- 31:03Speaker 1: right back.

- 32:07Speaker 1: All right, we're back. Fortunately Djokovic versus Center has not
- 32:11Speaker 1: started yet and Wimbledon. But if you see my eyes
- 32:13Speaker 1: wandering up, that's why. Other good news for the twins
- 32:18Speaker 1: actually might create a bit of an issue for the
- 32:19Speaker 1: twins in a good way. But Ryan Jeffers Dan appears
- 32:22Speaker 1: to be all the way back. Is he officially back yet?
- 32:24Speaker 1: Are we still waiting for the official He.
- 32:26Speaker 2: Is not officially back. We're waiting for a word. But
- 32:28Speaker 2: he is very close, he said, I'm ready. It's just
- 32:30Speaker 2: going to depend on when they want to activate me.
- 32:33Speaker 3: It wouldn't shock me if we saw them roll with
- 32:36Speaker 3: three catchers for a little while and somebody else goes.
- 32:40Speaker 3: Because you can use Jeffers as the dh especially with
- 32:43Speaker 3: Buckston down, or you can use Kartini as the dh
- 32:46Speaker 3: R Jackson. But also Kartini and Jackson both can play
- 32:49Speaker 3: some first base, so they can be flexible and not
- 32:52Speaker 3: just be relegated too, Like this is three catchers and
- 32:55Speaker 3: that's all they can do.
- 32:57Speaker 2: But Jeffers is close, We asked him.
- 33:00Speaker 3: He said he got enough time where he wanted to
- 33:02Speaker 3: track the ball and his numbers I don't have them,
- 33:05Speaker 3: but they were excellent.
- 33:06Speaker 2: At Triple A. He was just on the ball all the.
- 33:09Speaker 3: Way, hitting like one hundred and four miles an hour
- 33:11Speaker 3: drives off the bat one hundred and five early on,
- 33:14Speaker 3: And I asked about the vibration because that was one
- 33:16Speaker 3: of the things that Derek Shelton had talked about, was
- 33:19Speaker 3: like how guys respond after their hamte bone breaks and
- 33:23Speaker 3: how they come back no when from the hamletbone, Like
- 33:27Speaker 3: that's a thing where you have to check with it,
- 33:30Speaker 3: and how the hand is doing off the camp right exactly.
- 33:34Speaker 3: He said, you know what, he actually has not dealt
- 33:36Speaker 3: with that at all because he pimped the axe handle
- 33:40Speaker 3: bat that he uses and says that's actually there to
- 33:43Speaker 3: help you with the hammittbone. And so he's felt good
- 33:46Speaker 3: physically and it's been about getting the legs underneath him
- 33:48Speaker 3: and he's done some work there just so he can
- 33:51Speaker 3: be behind the plate.
- 33:53Speaker 2: But track the.
- 33:54Speaker 3: Ball well, was contacting well and had put up some
- 33:58Speaker 3: gutdy numbers.
- 33:59Speaker 2: So I think we'll see him.
- 34:01Speaker 3: I mean, I wouldn't be shocked if he's activated tonight
- 34:04Speaker 3: for the start of this series against the Los Angeles Angels.
- 34:08Speaker 3: But that's a good ad for them. Bailey over come
- 34:11Speaker 3: back yesterday is a good ad for them. They're getting healthier.
- 34:14Speaker 3: Cole Sands through the other day and can be back
- 34:18Speaker 3: in this bullpen somewhat soon, and that'd be a nice
- 34:20Speaker 3: boost to have someone that they could slide into a
- 34:23Speaker 3: sixth or seventh inning role if he's healthy. And you know,
- 34:26Speaker 3: he threw twenty five pitches the other day. His velocities
- 34:28Speaker 3: on all those pitches were up at triple A and
- 34:31Speaker 3: he is kind of getting there. I'm sure we'll see
- 34:33Speaker 3: him have at least one more rehab outing before but
- 34:37Speaker 3: who knows. Like but those are encouraging signs.
- 34:40Speaker 2: This team needs to get healthy. And you know, Mick
- 34:42Speaker 2: Abeles in the clubhouse, he's encouraged. After his surgery, he
- 34:48Speaker 2: was feeling good.
- 34:49Speaker 3: He doesn't have a timeline yet, but he's optimistic about
- 34:52Speaker 3: coming back this year.
- 34:53Speaker 2: They shaved the bone down for him, So on.
- 34:56Speaker 1: The injury front, it's shaving a bone.
- 34:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:00Speaker 3: Hey, look, look, there's no really good injuries with the elbow,
- 35:04Speaker 3: Like it's either shaved down the bone or loose bodies
- 35:07Speaker 3: were removed.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Yeah, Neither of.
- 35:09Speaker 2: Those are good definitions.
- 35:10Speaker 5: Right screws, that's the big one.
- 35:14Speaker 3: No screws, yeah, right exactly, and no time together like
- 35:20Speaker 3: pieces of.
- 35:20Speaker 2: Ten tendons to make a new elbow, right like that,
- 35:25Speaker 2: Those are the worst ones.
- 35:26Speaker 3: But what you guys do stuff to go through to
- 35:30Speaker 3: throw a baseball is insane. But yeah, it's definitely like
- 35:36Speaker 3: Jeffers is just another nice thing that's happening right now.
- 35:40Speaker 3: It feels like things are going in the right direction
- 35:41Speaker 3: to go along with the good vibes. Aside from the
- 35:44Speaker 3: Anthony Bonda news, everything else has been pretty upbeat lately,
- 35:49Speaker 3: even Baron Bucks and you could see it. He's I
- 35:51Speaker 3: think he's okay with the fact that he's never gonna
- 35:55Speaker 3: be okay that he's on the aisle, But I think
- 35:57Speaker 3: he is in a good place to be on the isle.
- 36:00Speaker 3: The team winning without him has keeps showing him this
- 36:03Speaker 3: is the right move, I think.
- 36:05Speaker 2: So.
- 36:06Speaker 3: He saw him in the clubhouse after the game yesterday.
- 36:08Speaker 3: He looked pretty upbeat, even with the loss. They all
- 36:10Speaker 3: look pretty upbeat right now.
- 36:13Speaker 1: It does create an interesting issue We've talked in the past,
- 36:16Speaker 1: Tyler about, obviously, how well Victor Carrattini has done stepping
- 36:20Speaker 1: up as the main catcher in Jeffers's absence. He also
- 36:24Speaker 1: remains a potential trade option if you're looking to buy.
- 36:29Speaker 1: Given the logjam at catcher, the Twins might draft to
- 36:32Speaker 1: catch her tomorrow. We'll get to that in a minute,
- 36:34Speaker 1: but at least on the field for now. What do
- 36:38Speaker 1: you how do you see this working out? Tyler? What
- 36:39Speaker 1: would you do?
- 36:40Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 36:41Speaker 4: I'm trying to remember, like we had well with just two,
- 36:44Speaker 4: like we had Garber and cashtro you know, they had
- 36:47Speaker 4: their moments where their little dinged up here or there.
- 36:50Speaker 4: But it does it creates a situation where it's do
- 36:53Speaker 4: you know, rotate them daily kind of no matter what.
- 36:56Speaker 4: And then like Dan said, you know, dh whoever's off,
- 36:59Speaker 4: maybe to keep them getting at bats because especially like
- 37:03Speaker 4: if Karattini's hot, he's a switch hitter.
- 37:06Speaker 5: If I'm not mistaken, I'm not imagining that, but.
- 37:09Speaker 4: He's switch hitter and he's been carrying the freight, so
- 37:12Speaker 4: to speak, since Jeffers left, and it's hard you know, yes,
- 37:16Speaker 4: Jeffers was probably assumed to be the bulk you know,
- 37:20Speaker 4: starter this year, but at the same time, like Karattini
- 37:23Speaker 4: was available because Astros had a big prospect that needed
- 37:26Speaker 4: to catch.
- 37:26Speaker 5: You know, they they.
- 37:27Speaker 4: Didn't give him the run that he probably deserved, and
- 37:31Speaker 4: now he's getting it, and it's like he's showing like
- 37:32Speaker 4: I'm I'm a good ballplayer, and so it does.
- 37:36Speaker 5: It's it's gonna be an interesting one. You know. There's
- 37:38Speaker 5: teams always need catching.
- 37:39Speaker 4: It's whether you're willing to get rid of one of
- 37:42Speaker 4: those two between he and Jeffers potentially, or is Jackson
- 37:46Speaker 4: your guy. Like it's they're they're gonna have to make
- 37:49Speaker 4: a tough decision, you know, and fortunately the guys are
- 37:52Speaker 4: making it tough. You know, everyone's contributing pretty much across
- 37:55Speaker 4: the board for the team. That lineup is you know,
- 37:57Speaker 4: we've talked about it a lot. It's everybody. He's kind
- 38:00Speaker 4: of doing their job, and it's hard to make a
- 38:02Speaker 4: decision on what you're going to do, and you know,
- 38:05Speaker 4: the last thing you want to do is see somebody leave.
- 38:07Speaker 4: But at the same time, it's if it means you've
- 38:10Speaker 4: got a better shot at getting a ring or win
- 38:12Speaker 4: in the division or whatever your end goal is, Like
- 38:15Speaker 4: you've got to make that tough decision sometimes, and you know,
- 38:18Speaker 4: it's part of baseball. Ultimately, And you know, I keep
- 38:21Speaker 4: going back to my initial thought on Jeffers, is he's
- 38:24Speaker 4: going to be the free agent.
- 38:26Speaker 5: Are you going to pay him what he wants? You know,
- 38:28Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 38:28Speaker 4: Fifty sixty seventy million probably is what he can get
- 38:31Speaker 4: on the market. Like, that's a lot of money. Do
- 38:34Speaker 4: we want to spend it all on him this offseason?
- 38:37Speaker 2: You keep him?
- 38:37Speaker 4: It's there, there's some things to be done, you know,
- 38:40Speaker 4: And I guess whenever he's active, that'll kind of open
- 38:42Speaker 4: the door for that. But yeah, as of right now,
- 38:45Speaker 4: it's it's a good problem to have, and you just
- 38:46Speaker 4: kind of ride it out until I guess the right
- 38:48Speaker 4: phone call comes in.
- 38:51Speaker 1: Hey, Kartini might get you a reliever at this point,
- 38:53Speaker 1: but go ahead down exactly.
- 38:55Speaker 3: Yeah, Kroten is there. They sign him for two years.
- 38:58Speaker 3: Kartini is the plan, the backup plan as the main
- 39:01Speaker 3: guy next year with Jeffers when he moves on.
- 39:04Speaker 2: And and you know.
- 39:05Speaker 3: I think they're hoping to get some kind of compensation
- 39:08Speaker 3: when Jeffers signs elsewhere. And that's the part where they're
- 39:12Speaker 3: in a good spot is that he you know, who
- 39:15Speaker 3: knows what the new CBA brings as far as compensation,
- 39:17Speaker 3: whether it be a qualified with play next year, right right,
- 39:21Speaker 3: And that's that's the other aspect of this. But when
- 39:25Speaker 3: you think about you know there will be some kind
- 39:27Speaker 3: of compensation for teams regardless. The NFL gives a draft
- 39:31Speaker 3: pick compensation at the end of like the third and
- 39:33Speaker 3: fourth rounds for free agents. So losing Jeffers, if you
- 39:38Speaker 3: hang on to him the rest of the way, if
- 39:41Speaker 3: they're in a good spot in three weeks and they
- 39:43Speaker 3: just decide to go forward, he's going to enhance the roster.
- 39:47Speaker 3: The balance will be interesting because he was the dominant
- 39:49Speaker 3: catcher before the injuries and Kartine was not hitting well
- 39:52Speaker 3: at all. Like mid May, there was like parts where
- 39:55Speaker 3: you're like, what, this guy's not been a good sign,
- 39:57Speaker 3: And since Jeffers left, it's just been he's been incredible,
- 40:01Speaker 3: And so you I think there might be more of
- 40:04Speaker 3: a fifty to fifty split or closer. Maybe maybe it's
- 40:07Speaker 3: fifty five to forty five something like that. But we're
- 40:10Speaker 3: gonna see Kerteini out there still. He's earned the extended
- 40:14Speaker 3: look and his body probably will appreciate some extra time
- 40:17Speaker 3: off too. Jackson's the one I'm wondering how they'll they'll
- 40:21Speaker 3: dance this because he's been good as the backup, but
- 40:25Speaker 3: he's out of options and so you know, they'd have
- 40:27Speaker 3: to expose them the waivers or trade him. And I
- 40:30Speaker 3: think they've learned they love their depth just from this
- 40:32Speaker 3: this routine or this exercise, and it's been critical.
- 40:36Speaker 2: So it's one of the few to take a really
- 40:39Speaker 2: good depth. Yeah, yeah, yeah right. Uh.
- 40:44Speaker 1: The MLB Draft is tomorrow Saturday. The eleventh. Twins have
- 40:49Speaker 1: the number three pick. We will have plenty of time
- 40:52Speaker 1: next week with UH with no games during the week
- 40:55Speaker 1: to talk about whoever the Twins do end up drafting.
- 40:57Speaker 1: But Dan, what is the quick preview? Will be looking
- 41:00Speaker 1: at as possibilities at number three.
- 41:03Speaker 2: Yeah, there are three real possibilities, maybe four.
- 41:07Speaker 3: The number one guy going in is UCLA shortstop Rockwall Chilowski.
- 41:14Speaker 2: Great name, yeah and.
- 41:16Speaker 1: Sounds like he should be a linebacker from the forties
- 41:18Speaker 1: or something.
- 41:20Speaker 4: Yeah he does, yeah, right, yeah.
- 41:24Speaker 3: He He's been up there all along. He went into
- 41:27Speaker 3: the year as the consensus number one. UCLA had an
- 41:30Speaker 3: early exit. I think it didn't really go very far
- 41:33Speaker 3: even though they were they won the SEC sounds weird,
- 41:36Speaker 3: I mean, the sorry, the big ten, and then catcher
- 41:41Speaker 3: Von Lackey from Georgia Tech.
- 41:42Speaker 2: Is also one of those top three guys.
- 41:45Speaker 3: Prep shortstop Grady Emerson, he's a Texas guy, had a
- 41:49Speaker 3: monster year. He's only the second player ever in high
- 41:54Speaker 3: school to be a nominee for the Golden Spikes Award.
- 41:58Speaker 3: He and Bobby Witt Junior are the only guys ever
- 42:01Speaker 3: that were preps to be nominated as semi finals for
- 42:05Speaker 3: that hit like five thirty two this season, he was outstanding.
- 42:08Speaker 3: He was at a small school, but he has lots
- 42:11Speaker 3: of big showcase event talent or he's played experienced there.
- 42:18Speaker 3: He was on Team USA four years in a row,
- 42:21Speaker 3: often being like a seventeen year old playing with eighteen
- 42:23Speaker 3: year olds. Made the All World Team in his last
- 42:26Speaker 3: year on Team USA. He's interesting.
- 42:30Speaker 2: There's hang on.
- 42:32Speaker 3: I think the Twins like Georgia Tech outfielder Drew Burris.
- 42:36Speaker 3: He's a guy that's He's rated on MLB MLB dot
- 42:40Speaker 3: COM's Top one hundred. He's the seventh rated prospect. They
- 42:43Speaker 3: also have been kind of tied to U see Santa
- 42:46Speaker 3: Barbara right hander Jackson Floora. He throws hard. Maybe they
- 42:49Speaker 3: could bring him up and put him in the bullpen
- 42:52Speaker 3: if they drafted him. But I don't see them drafting
- 42:54Speaker 3: for need. I see them taking the best available talent,
- 42:57Speaker 3: whatever that is. And it's a crap shoot the White Sox.
- 43:01Speaker 2: Who knows what they're doing at one Tampa Bay.
- 43:04Speaker 3: They always makes them off the wall picks they're number two.
- 43:06Speaker 3: It's hard to say what's going to happen, but it'll
- 43:09Speaker 3: be one of those five names for the twins. But
- 43:12Speaker 3: I really think the first three is where we'll see
- 43:14Speaker 3: them pull from whichever and maybe they're lucky and maybe
- 43:19Speaker 3: Rock falls to them and then they have a future
- 43:22Speaker 3: shortstop right away because he wouldn't be very far from
- 43:25Speaker 3: the majors.
- 43:26Speaker 1: Those top three all have great names, so I'm good
- 43:29Speaker 1: with any of them. I like, I put a lot
- 43:30Speaker 1: of stock in that. You need a nice, snappy name.
- 43:33Speaker 1: It doesn't matter, but I like to think it doesn't.
- 43:35Speaker 2: Yeah, Baseball America said that.
- 43:38Speaker 3: Baseball America said that Rock Julawski and Grady Emerson would
- 43:44Speaker 3: be not just top draft picks, but would be in
- 43:47Speaker 3: the high in their prospect rankings when they're selected, So
- 43:53Speaker 3: like maybe like top twenty prospects, So I mean there's
- 43:56Speaker 3: impact coming in one form or another, And hey, I mean,
- 43:59Speaker 3: look Von Lackey, a power catcher at Georgia Tech, a
- 44:03Speaker 3: big hitter, and maybe that's somebody you could look at
- 44:07Speaker 3: being the catcher of the future if if you get him,
- 44:10Speaker 3: and maybe he's not that far away. But catching is
- 44:13Speaker 3: always tricky because it takes time to get caught up
- 44:15Speaker 3: to the major league game and be ready to call
- 44:17Speaker 3: those games, have the knowledge needed to call those games.
- 44:22Speaker 3: Oh and hit, you know, and receive and frame and like.
- 44:26Speaker 3: But I think anyway they go, they're going to add
- 44:28Speaker 3: some impact talent to this franchise immediately.
- 44:33Speaker 1: One more series until the All Star Break. The Angels
- 44:35Speaker 1: come to town this weekend.
- 44:37Speaker 5: Fighting Kurt Suzuki's the fighting Kurt suzukis.
- 44:42Speaker 1: The Angels are not good, last place in the American
- 44:46Speaker 1: League thirty seven and fifty seven. If the Twins were
- 44:51Speaker 1: able to sweep them, they would go into the All
- 44:52Speaker 1: Star Break over five hundred, which is crazy, but even
- 44:56Speaker 1: two out of three, they can keep that train rolling.
- 44:58Speaker 1: I think they'd be just fine with that. And they
- 45:00Speaker 1: have a really nice setup on the mound, Dad, unless
- 45:03Speaker 1: I'm wrong, because I feel like the last couple times
- 45:04Speaker 1: I've listed off the starting pitching rotation for the series.
- 45:08Speaker 1: I've been incorrect, Butzbie Matthews, Joe Ryan.
- 45:11Speaker 2: Todge Bradley sounds what the plan is there.
- 45:15Speaker 1: It is, that's the lineup and twin starters have been
- 45:17Speaker 1: on fire last month, a top five unit in er
- 45:22Speaker 1: batting average against and earn runs allowed. Pretty good in
- 45:25Speaker 1: some of those other metrics too, if you're watching on
- 45:27Speaker 1: YouTube right now. So they've got to feel good about
- 45:30Speaker 1: that lineup Dan heading into this final series before the break.
- 45:34Speaker 3: And it's so crazy where they are because right now
- 45:39Speaker 3: they are in exactly the same spot they were a
- 45:42Speaker 3: year ago. They went into that final series of the
- 45:44Speaker 3: first half against the Pirates last year where if they swept,
- 45:47Speaker 3: they had this nine game homestand that was considered huge
- 45:51Speaker 3: before the trade deadline last year, and I think they
- 45:53Speaker 3: were six and two going into the.
- 45:55Speaker 2: Finale and they couldn't get it done.
- 45:56Speaker 3: On the Sunday they had multiple chances and lost and
- 45:59Speaker 3: maybe ten ins the Pirates and they went into the
- 46:02Speaker 3: break one game under five hundred.
- 46:03Speaker 2: They came out.
- 46:04Speaker 3: They had that Schemes Joe Ryan matchup on Friday Night
- 46:08Speaker 3: last year and Joe Ryan outpitched Schimes. Huge crowd, like
- 46:11Speaker 3: forty thousand and Byron had his cycle on Byron Bucks
- 46:15Speaker 3: and Bobblehead Day. So they're in exactly the same position
- 46:19Speaker 3: they were a year ago. But what's funny is at
- 46:21Speaker 3: that time it was like, oh man, this is dire.
- 46:23Speaker 3: They'd better get this because if not, we're gonna they're
- 46:27Speaker 3: gonna rip apart this team. This is such a disappointing
- 46:30Speaker 3: first half, and here they are where if they come
- 46:33Speaker 3: out of this in first or one game above five hundred,
- 46:36Speaker 3: it's gonna be like the greatest first half they've had
- 46:38Speaker 3: in a while, because it's so unexpected. The difference of
- 46:42Speaker 3: a place from a year ago to now is eye opening,
- 46:47Speaker 3: and it's unfortunate that everything that has gone into the
- 46:50Speaker 3: last three years and driving the fans away is playing
- 46:56Speaker 3: out and we're not seeing people at the park enjoying
- 46:58Speaker 3: this team, because this team is really fun and they're
- 47:01Speaker 3: the kind of team the fans would get behind. They've
- 47:04Speaker 3: they've embraced their underdog mentality, and here they are where
- 47:07Speaker 3: you know they should win the series. There's especially with
- 47:10Speaker 3: those three guys going they should win this series. But
- 47:13Speaker 3: also you want to sweep get that momentum into the
- 47:15Speaker 3: end of the first half and into the All Star
- 47:17Speaker 3: break and go in a game up above five hundred.
- 47:21Speaker 3: So they certainly have the cards aligned or the stars
- 47:25Speaker 3: aligned to do that. But I mean sweeping is really difficult.
- 47:29Speaker 3: Like Hawk Harrelson said, every team wins sixty games, they
- 47:33Speaker 3: lose sixty games.
- 47:33Speaker 2: It's what you do with the forty in between.
- 47:36Speaker 3: All the Angels, as bad as they are, they're gonna
- 47:38Speaker 3: still win sixty games and they're you know, so this
- 47:42Speaker 3: can be one of them, and you know, you just
- 47:45Speaker 3: need to make sure that you take care of business.
- 47:47Speaker 3: This team has done a good job of that recently
- 47:50Speaker 3: and they need to keep doing it again.
- 47:52Speaker 1: Tyler, is there a little extra incentive pressure to go
- 47:55Speaker 1: into the break on a high note, especially a series
- 47:58Speaker 1: that you should do well in?
- 48:00Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it's one.
- 48:03Speaker 4: Historically, like in games and seasons, I remember, you don't
- 48:07Speaker 4: you just can't play down, I guess would be the
- 48:09Speaker 4: best way to say it. You know, you just played Cleveland,
- 48:12Speaker 4: a good team team you needed to be. You handled
- 48:14Speaker 4: your business. You know, it's it's show up today, ready
- 48:18Speaker 4: to pop them in the mouth. You know, it's it's
- 48:22Speaker 4: when you don't show up and kind of okay, it's
- 48:24Speaker 4: the Angels, you know, and next thing you know, you're
- 48:26Speaker 4: down three nothing in the second or something like, you know,
- 48:29Speaker 4: make an air here, mental mistake. It's just finishing strong,
- 48:33Speaker 4: honestly is what it is. And I guarantee you Shelty
- 48:36Speaker 4: and and the boys are you know, their talks or
- 48:38Speaker 4: whatever they're having inside it. It's finished the first half strong.
- 48:42Speaker 4: Not just finish the first half. You know, it's maintain
- 48:46Speaker 4: this pace, maybe even put the throttle down a little bit.
- 48:49Speaker 4: Just you've got a week off coming or five to
- 48:51Speaker 4: whatever it is. You know, empty the tank. You're gonna
- 48:56Speaker 4: get plenty of rest and recovery. You know, go to
- 48:58Speaker 4: the lake, do whatever you want to do. But these
- 49:01Speaker 4: three they do matter. I don't think it's more of
- 49:03Speaker 4: a stress or a concern. It's more of a show up,
- 49:07Speaker 4: ready to play baseball today. Treat it like this game
- 49:09Speaker 4: matters as much as any other, and just take care
- 49:12Speaker 4: of your business. You know, at the end of the day,
- 49:14Speaker 4: especially a team like the Angels coming in, they're looking
- 49:17Speaker 4: to surprise somebody. You know, it's probably it's young guys
- 49:20Speaker 4: just waiting for their moments and things like that. You know,
- 49:22Speaker 4: they're they're struggling going through it, so any sign of
- 49:25Speaker 4: hope for them is going to start a fire. And
- 49:27Speaker 4: so you just got to come out and set the
- 49:29Speaker 4: tone early and like damn sand you sweep would be great,
