- 0:49SPEAKER_00: If it's morning, afternoon, or evening, I just want to thank you for taking some time out of your day to spend here with me on this episode where we're going to be talking about mental strength.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: What what are 13 things mentally strong people do every day?
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: And what does it even mean to be mentally strong?
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: The truth is life is life can throw us curveballs, it can knock us to the ground.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: And so how do we quickly bounce back and adapt to the situation?
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Well, mentally, when we talk about being mentally strong, mental strength really resent represents our ability and our capacity to manage stressors and the challenges in life and to make the most of our strengths, to really pull in, lean in on those strengths, and and and uh be able to work through those challenging and hard times.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Mental strength is actually a skill that you can learn to master.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: You can learn to build just like any other muscle that you're building.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Building mental strength involves developing positive habits, ways of thinking, which then leads into behavior and uh behavior changes and uh patterns and then sticking to them.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: So, what are 13 things mentally strong people do every day?
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Well, number one, mentally strong people pay attention to their emotions.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: It's really important for people to stop running away from their emotions.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: There's this fear around if I pay attention to my emotion, then I'm just gonna become it or I'm gonna sit in it.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: And the truth is we're looking, if we can look at our emotions and learn from them and recognize that our emotions are here to tell us something.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: They're here with a message.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: That actually is a strength.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: So mentally strong people are always attuned to their emotions because they know how to observe and identify them, name the feelings as an experience.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: They don't suppress them.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: And when they get to that place of being able to name their emotions and recognize them, they're able to then recognize what the need is.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: The second thing is mentally strong individuals accept responsibility.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Being mentally strong does mean not blaming others for any of your mistakes, any of your failures, any of the situations.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: It's really about staying away from getting stuck in victimhood.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: So mentally strong people really don't have a problem accepting responsibility for their actions, for their choices, for their words, because mentally strong people recognize that every situation is a growth opportunity, even if it doesn't go the way that we want it to go.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Number three, setting goals and going after them.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: You have a greater chance of success when you know what you want to achieve.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: So setting uh realistic, clearly defined goals, goals that provide vision and motivation is really important to creating this mental strength, this ability to go after those goals.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: Number four, focusing on the solutions instead of the problems.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: So those that we see that seem so mentally fit, mentally strong are people who don't sit in and waste time on the feeling sorry for themselves if something didn't go the way that they wanted it to, or raging about the obstacles or difficulties.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Instead, they're focusing on what could be a possible solution, what could be a different way to look at this?
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: How could I approve on where I am now?
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: So they analyze maybe what went wrong in a situation.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Yes, they're not ignoring it.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: It's not about pretending that the bad thing or challenging thing didn't happen, but they're concentrating on how can I learn from it?
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: How can I maybe find a solution?
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: How can I prevent this from maybe happening again?
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Number five, learning from mistakes.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: So this really um goes to this idea of maybe we don't even call it a mistake anymore, maybe we just call it an outcome.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: It's an event.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: We get to determine whether it's bad or good, right?
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: So being mentally strong means that instead of it just being this bad thing that happened or a mistake that happened, because those things are part of life.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: They're inevitable.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: It's about uh accepting it and then coming up with a way how we can grow and develop from the situation, from the mistake, from the event that we weren't happy with.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: So the ability to take responsibility, looking how to reframe it, looking for opportunities to grow and learn, and then being able to treat ourselves with compassion in the context of that and continue working towards the goals that we've set out.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Number six, individuals who don't dwell on the past tend to show this mental strength, right?
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: So mentally strong individuals who are able to make peace with their past, refusing to regret or hold on to those grudges, they're able to uh they they actually refuse to engage in those unproductive behaviors such as rumination or dwelling, but instead they are in the present moment.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: They can learn from the past, but they're not dwelling on the past.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: Mentally strong folks accept challenges.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: This is all about the difference between being in a fixed mindset and a growth mindset.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: When we are willing to say, this thing might be um, this thing that we're about to do, this challenge, it's outside of my comfort zone, but I'm willing to take the opportunity to grow, that's about stepping into the growth mindset.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Number eight, they accept defeat or failure.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: And so mentally strong people have this strong sense of self-discipline and perseverance, and so instead of uh looking towards instant gratification, they can actually accept a defeat or a failure, and they can say, that actually can help lead me towards success because I can grow from it.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: Mentally strong people definitely set boundaries.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: One aspect of mental strength definitely includes sense being able to set these healthy boundaries towards people, relationships, and experiences.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: They really are able to release this need to people please, they're able to behave assertively and they understand the difference between assertiveness and aggression.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: They're able to say no to unreasonable damn demands and expectations, or just say no if they truly can't do something.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Because again, when you're when you're accepting responsibility, there's less fear involved around saying no when you know that it's not something that you can commit to.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: Just a few more here.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: Mentally strong people do practice gratitude.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: I talk about this all the time on this podcast that gratitude is one of the best things that we can do for our well-being because it does put us in a more optimistic outlook.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: They speak up for what they need to.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: So if you want to build a mental strength practice, it's about assertiveness, being able to stand up for yourself and speak your mind openly.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: It does not mean that we disregard other people's feelings or we're rude or obnoxious.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: It just means that you're able to recognize what your needs are and being able to speak towards them.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Mentally strong people do not obsess over the things that they cannot control because the truth is there's so many things in life that we cannot control.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: And so it's about recognizing those external things are external to us.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: We can only control how we react to the situation and what we choose to do.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: And finally, mentally strong people do take calculated risks.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: You know, mentally strong people are not afraid to step out of that comfort zone, they look for solutions, they seek opportunities, and they have confidence in their abilities and recognize that because of who they are and because of how they approach situations, even if it doesn't go the way that they wanted it to, they can trust themselves that they'll learn and grow from it.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: This is something that I actually talk about in coaching quite a bit, just in terms of how we can work on how we see things and see ourselves.
