- 0:00S1: Today on Bold steps, Mark Jobe teaches us how to
- 0:03S1: stay in our spiritual zone.
- 0:06S2: How many of you know life has a lot of bumps, circumstances,
- 0:10S2: people that hit us tug at us, and they knock
- 0:13S2: us out of that place of favor. But I've discovered
- 0:15S2: over the years, listen, it is a battle to stay
- 0:18S2: in the place that God wants us to stay in.
- 0:32S1: Welcome to Bold Steps with Mark Jobe. Mark is founding
- 0:36S1: pastor of New Life Community Church in Chicago. I'm Wayne Shepherd. Well,
- 0:40S1: many of us have heard the phrase living in the
- 0:42S1: favor of God. But what exactly does that mean? Well,
- 0:46S1: today we're going to see a very powerful example of
- 0:48S1: how God can work in our lives and be displayed
- 0:50S1: in our lives when we focus on God's presence instead
- 0:53S1: of our problems. But Mark, I'm going to be honest,
- 0:56S1: that seems easier said than done.
- 0:57S3: Sometimes it really is. And the life of Joseph is
- 1:04S3: just the story that comes to my mind first. Mhm.
- 1:10S3: A man with a calling on his life. But, you know,
- 1:13S3: there's bumps and bruises and hurts and disappointments and betrayals
- 1:19S3: that can really sour our spirit and take us out
- 1:22S3: of that zone where God can really use us. And
- 1:25S3: so we have to continue to get back into that
- 1:29S3: zone of favor and humility before God. And so I'm
- 1:32S3: going to talk to you today about how to stay
- 1:35S3: in the zone.
- 1:35S1: All right. If you're in a place where you can
- 1:37S1: open your Bible, turn to Genesis chapter 39. We begin
- 1:40S1: this new series today, Life interrupted. And to kick it off,
- 1:44S1: here's Mark's message. Don't get pushed out of your zone.
- 1:49S2: Anybody here ever been pushed by someone else that's cutting
- 1:51S2: in line? Anybody here ever been, uh, kind of bumped
- 1:56S2: out of your zone or place? Or you have a
- 2:00S2: cup of coffee and someone bumps you and spills you.
- 2:02S2: This happened to me in the office not too long ago.
- 2:04S2: I filled a nice cup of coffee. Someone was coming
- 2:07S2: through the hallway, bumped me, and spilled it all over.
- 2:10S2: Life is full of bumps. And life is full of
- 2:15S2: people that try to get us off our our railing
- 2:19S2: off of our lane. I was in New York recently.
- 2:22S2: I was speaking to a group of about a thousand
- 2:24S2: men in Albany, New York, and I took my wife
- 2:27S2: with me because she's my favorite traveling companion. So I
- 2:33S2: made a resolution years ago that I would never travel alone.
- 2:36S2: So when I go to speaking engagements, I always go
- 2:38S2: with someone with me. And now that my kids are
- 2:42S2: a little bit older, my wife is my first choice,
- 2:44S2: and I always have a lot more fun when she's around.
- 2:48S2: So we decided that we would head down to Albany
- 2:51S2: about 2.5 hour from New York City. And so we
- 2:55S2: figured after the men's conference that I would shoot over
- 2:58S2: to New York City and just spend two days down
- 3:01S2: in Manhattan enjoying the time there. But one of the
- 3:04S2: days it rained really bad. I mean, it was pouring
- 3:08S2: down rain. And so we went out of the hotel
- 3:11S2: and we grabbed an umbrella. Uh, let me illustrate here
- 3:14S2: with an umbrella. Thank you. And, um, I don't know
- 3:18S2: if you've ever been downtown New York, but downtown New York.
- 3:21S2: It's like crazy trying to walk in Manhattan. I mean,
- 3:25S2: people think that people in Chicago have an attitude. New
- 3:30S2: Yorkers have a ramped up attitude. I mean, they're aggressive.
- 3:34S2: They're pushy. If anybody's listening from New York, we love you.
- 3:36S2: But work on your attitude. They're very aggressive. They push
- 3:42S2: they bump their you know, they they don't say, excuse you.
- 3:45S2: That's just the way it is. And so we were
- 3:47S2: walking downtown, super crowded. It was raining. And so we
- 3:51S2: pulled out an umbrella. And, um, and by the way,
- 3:56S2: the umbrella was a lot smaller than this one. And
- 3:59S2: we were trying to Both of us fit under the umbrella.
- 4:03S2: Now my wife. I know some of you ladies are
- 4:06S2: like this. You don't want a drop of water to
- 4:08S2: hit your hair because it messes up your hair, so
- 4:11S2: don't get it. But she said, I don't want my
- 4:13S2: hair to get wet. And so my wife is five foot.
- 4:16S2: I'm six foot. So she was holding the umbrella and
- 4:21S2: I'm under the umbrella, so I have to walk like this.
- 4:26S2: Because she doesn't want to. Just a piece of her hair.
- 4:29S2: I kept telling her, well, my eyebrows can get wet too,
- 4:32S2: and it messes up my look if my eyebrows get wet.
- 4:34S2: She wasn't taking it. And so we're walking down. I'm
- 4:38S2: hunched over and I tell you, we are bumping into
- 4:41S2: people in New York. Um, they are just a bunch
- 4:46S2: of umbrellas coming out, people in a hurry. They're bumping us,
- 4:49S2: and every time they bumped us. I seem to get
- 4:52S2: knocked out of the umbrella. My wife wasn't, but I
- 4:56S2: seem to get knocked out. My head's over. I'm walking
- 4:58S2: like this with my wife, and I keep bumping into
- 5:01S2: people and and they're aggressive. We're bumping into people. And
- 5:05S2: I kept getting wet because I kept getting knocked out
- 5:09S2: from under the umbrella. Now, I believe that there is
- 5:13S2: a place of favor that a lot of you struggle
- 5:18S2: to stay under. I believe there's a place of favor
- 5:22S2: under God's umbrella that circumstances, people and problems tend to
- 5:28S2: knock us out of. How many of you know? Life
- 5:31S2: has a lot of bumps, circumstances. People that hit us
- 5:36S2: tug at us, and they knock us out of that
- 5:38S2: place of favor. But I've discovered over the years, listen,
- 5:41S2: it is a battle to stay in the place that
- 5:43S2: God wants us to stay in. And I believe that
- 5:46S2: there are some people here that because of circumstances in life,
- 5:51S2: because of family issues, marital issues, financial issues, hurts, disappointments,
- 5:58S2: you've been knocked several times so that you are no
- 6:02S2: longer in the place. Under the place you're no longer
- 6:06S2: in the zone and you're walking outside of that zone.
- 6:10S2: And so today, I want to talk to you about
- 6:11S2: how to stay in God's zone, the favor zone. And
- 6:16S2: I want you to take your Bibles and turn to
- 6:17S2: Genesis chapter 39. And if you've read the story of Joseph,
- 6:23S2: his story is a little bit like some of our stories.
- 6:28S2: There's good news and then bad news, and then there's
- 6:32S2: good news and bad news, good news followed by bad news.
- 6:38S2: The good news is Joseph is born into a godly family, Jacob,
- 6:43S2: and he's got a brother that he loves. The bad
- 6:45S2: news is that he's got a bunch of brothers that
- 6:48S2: don't like him very much. The good news is his
- 6:51S2: father shows him a lot of favor. The bad news
- 6:54S2: is his brothers are very jealous of that favor. The
- 6:57S2: good news is his dad gives him a task to accomplish.
- 7:00S2: The bad news is his brothers put his brothers, tie
- 7:03S2: him up and sell him as a slave. The good
- 7:05S2: news is he sold to a slave. That's very a
- 7:09S2: house that has a lot of money and he prospers.
- 7:12S2: The bad news is he ends up in jail again.
- 7:14S2: How many of you can relate to Joseph's story? Life
- 7:18S2: is full of good news, bad news, good news, bad news.
- 7:22S2: And so I want to talk to you today about
- 7:25S2: what it means to stay in that place even when
- 7:28S2: bad news hits us. If you turn in your Bibles
- 7:32S2: to Genesis chapter 39, we pick up the story right
- 7:38S2: after Joseph has been sold by his brothers in a
- 7:42S2: highly dysfunctional family to a group of traveling caravan of
- 7:49S2: the Midianites. They sell them to this group. This group
- 7:52S2: takes Joseph to Egypt and sells him as a slave
- 7:57S2: to a house of a. Of a guy by the
- 7:59S2: name of Potiphar, Who is the captain of the guard.
- 8:02S2: A very high position in the Egyptian army. And so
- 8:06S2: I'm starting to read in verse two it says, the
- 8:09S2: Lord was with Joseph, so that he prospered, and he
- 8:14S2: lived in the house with his Egyptian master. When his
- 8:17S2: master saw that the Lord was with him, and that
- 8:20S2: the Lord gave him success in everything he did, Joseph
- 8:25S2: found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar
- 8:31S2: put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted
- 8:34S2: to his care everything that he owned. If you're taking
- 8:38S2: notes today, I want you to give you the first
- 8:40S2: the first insight into staying in the place in the
- 8:45S2: favor zone. Number one, if you're taking notes, write this down.
- 8:48S2: Focus on the present instead of the problems, the people
- 8:53S2: and the pressure. I look at Joseph and what you
- 9:00S2: need to understand about Joseph's story is that when he
- 9:03S2: was sold by his brothers into slavery, he was only
- 9:06S2: about 17 years old, 17, 18 years old. He's taken
- 9:12S2: to a land that he doesn't know. He doesn't know
- 9:15S2: the Egyptian language. He's a slave treated like a piece
- 9:22S2: of property. He's given the lowest job that he could have.
- 9:26S2: He feels betrayed by his siblings in a foreign land
- 9:29S2: that he doesn't understand. He can't get in touch with
- 9:33S2: his family. He's lonely, hurt, betrayed at a very, very
- 9:40S2: dark place in life. But there's one thing that he
- 9:43S2: has going for him. Listen to this. It says in
- 9:46S2: verse two, it says, but the Lord was with Joseph.
- 9:53S2: There's something powerful when God is with us in spite
- 9:57S2: of our bad circumstances. Here's the first thing that comes
- 10:02S2: to my mind when I see this, by the way,
- 10:03S2: and I want you to take note of this, even
- 10:06S2: though you may be going through a difficult time right
- 10:08S2: now that you don't understand, you're saying, why am I
- 10:11S2: going through this? God, can I point this out to
- 10:14S2: you that sometimes God will use negative circumstances as the
- 10:20S2: transportation vehicle to the place of our calling? Yeah, yeah.
- 10:31S2: Think about it. Joseph traveled to the place of his
- 10:36S2: calling in the caravan as a slave. Joseph did not
- 10:42S2: know that God was setting him up to be the liberator.
- 10:48S2: God was setting him up to a high position. Years later,
- 10:52S2: Joseph would rescue his family. Joseph would become the second
- 10:57S2: in charge of Egypt. But in order to go to
- 11:00S2: his calling, he had to go to Egypt. He had
- 11:03S2: to learn the language, but he didn't know it at
- 11:05S2: the time that this slavery that he was sold into
- 11:09S2: was the transportation vehicle to Egypt, where he would become
- 11:13S2: the most powerful man in Egypt. He didn't understand that
- 11:17S2: God would use bad circumstances to lead him to his calling.
- 11:21S2: Can I tell you something? Some of you are right
- 11:23S2: now are in bad circumstances, and you don't understand why
- 11:27S2: you're in these circumstances. But it may very well be
- 11:31S2: that your circumstances right now that you don't understand, that
- 11:35S2: you hate, that you're discouraged about that it may be
- 11:38S2: your circumstances that are taking you to your place of calling.
- 11:44S2: You are trying to get into that one college and
- 11:48S2: your GPA was just one point off and they said
- 11:51S2: no to you. You're devastated at home eating a whole
- 11:56S2: pie by yourself. But what you don't know is that God. Well,
- 12:02S2: God has another college in mind. And that you're going
- 12:05S2: to meet your future husband at that college. And so
- 12:08S2: God had to cause you to deny that one college,
- 12:11S2: to take you to another college to set it up
- 12:13S2: so you could meet the guy that you're going to
- 12:15S2: spend the rest of your life and your story is
- 12:18S2: going to be, thank God I didn't get into college.
- 12:20S2: I applied for because God had a bigger, better purpose
- 12:24S2: for me. What strikes me about this, though, is that
- 12:30S2: many of us, when we're in the middle of the
- 12:32S2: bad news story, it's easy for us to develop a
- 12:35S2: bad attitude when life and circumstances seem to have been
- 12:40S2: bad to us because we don't see the end of
- 12:44S2: the story. There's no indication in Scripture that Joseph got
- 12:48S2: bitter or resentful or angry. Now, he may have struggled
- 12:53S2: through these emotions, but there's no indication that he gave
- 12:57S2: up on God, that he lost his faith, that he
- 13:00S2: raised his fist to God. There's no indication, it seems,
- 13:04S2: like Joseph, even in the midst of this, he did
- 13:07S2: not allow bitterness to invade his heart and soul. Because
- 13:10S2: let me tell you something about bitterness. When life has
- 13:13S2: been unjust, many of us get hurt by life, get
- 13:17S2: hurt by circumstances, and our default mode is bitterness, resentment,
- 13:23S2: and anger.
- 13:30S1: Well, that is a very convicting note to hit the
- 13:32S1: pause button on, but we will return to the message
- 13:34S1: in just a moment from Mark Jobe here on Bold Steps.
- 13:37S1: In the meantime, we want to thank our bold partners, Mark.
- 13:40S1: These are listeners who give a monthly gift. And frankly,
- 13:43S1: this is what makes this program go.
- 13:45S3: It really does. And again, I want to just say
- 13:48S3: once again, thank you, Bold Partners, for coming alongside us.
- 13:53S3: You really are a part of this team. And some
- 13:57S3: of you may be saying, hey, I want to join
- 13:58S3: that team as well. Well, it's fairly simple to join
- 14:01S3: the team. We'll let you know how to do that.
- 14:04S3: But really your commitment is to say I'm going to
- 14:06S3: give monthly whatever you decide to give monthly. But it
- 14:10S3: really helps us plan, budget, grow and reach people like
- 14:15S3: this person from Malawi. Wayne reads the letter.
- 14:19S1: You tell me specifically where he's from. Don't throw it
- 14:22S1: to me. I want to hear you pronounce this one.
- 14:24S3: So I believe this listener is from Kaira Zulu place.
- 14:28S3: I may be butchering that name, but.
- 14:30S1: I believe you. Here's a side note. When we get
- 14:33S1: listener letters like this, we like to look them up
- 14:35S1: on the map, don't we? So we do. We're looking
- 14:37S1: at a map of Malawi. But here's what this dear
- 14:39S1: listener says. You are really mentoring us here with the
- 14:43S1: right message of Jesus Christ, who is at the right
- 14:45S1: hand of God in heaven. Before, I was one of
- 14:48S1: those people who used to shun the Christian message. But
- 14:51S1: now I do love it. I just cannot believe that
- 14:54S1: this is happening to me today. One thing I know
- 14:57S1: there is God in heaven and he's done this to
- 14:59S1: my life. I thank you people for coming up with
- 15:02S1: the message of Jesus.
- 15:04S3: Are.
- 15:04S1: Precious.
- 15:05S3: That's great. It just warms my heart. It encourages me
- 15:08S3: so much. It reminds me that there's a lot of
- 15:11S3: people around the world that haven't clearly heard the message
- 15:16S3: and person of Jesus Christ. So thank you, bold partners.
- 15:19S3: Thank you. Thank you for helping us take the message
- 15:22S3: of Jesus to people like this, uh, person who's responding
- 15:27S3: from Malawi, Africa.
- 15:28S1: Perhaps you've already given to bold steps, but maybe you'd
- 15:31S1: like to step up and make it a monthly gift.
- 15:33S1: We'd love to hear from you. We'd love to make
- 15:35S1: you a bold partner with this ministry. You can do
- 15:37S1: that by going to Bold steps.org. You choose the amount.
- 15:40S1: We would be very grateful for whatever you give, become
- 15:43S1: a bold partner at bold steps.org. All right, back to
- 15:46S1: this important message today titled don't get pushed out of
- 15:49S1: Your Zone. Here again is Mark.
- 15:56S2: Listen, what it tells us in Ephesians chapter four, verse
- 16:00S2: 30 and 31, it says, do not grieve the Holy
- 16:05S2: Spirit of God, with whom you have been sealed for
- 16:09S2: the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, brawling,
- 16:16S2: slander along with every form of malice. What he's telling
- 16:22S2: us is, if you're a believer here today, you have
- 16:25S2: the Holy Spirit of God inside of you. But when
- 16:29S2: you allow resentment or anger, bitterness because of life's circumstances,
- 16:34S2: you grieve the Holy Spirit. And when you grieve the
- 16:38S2: Holy Spirit, you grieve. There's no more miserable place to
- 16:44S2: be than a Christian who's not walking right with God.
- 16:49S2: Because part of the fruit of the spirit is joy.
- 16:51S2: But when the Holy Spirit is grieved inside of you,
- 16:54S2: when he grieves, you can't be joyful. You lose your
- 16:56S2: joy too. And some of you are believers, but you're
- 17:00S2: walking joyless, not because God isn't giving you joy, but
- 17:03S2: because you're not walking in the spirit. You've allowed bitterness
- 17:06S2: or resentment or anger to fill your heart, and so
- 17:09S2: your joy has evaporated. It feels like Joseph, even in
- 17:15S2: the midst of this. The Bible says that the presence
- 17:19S2: of God was with Joseph even in his bad circumstances.
- 17:24S2: T s Randall says, bitterness is this the atmosphere produced
- 17:29S2: in us internally when we meditate over life's circumstances and
- 17:34S2: decide that we have not been given a fair deal?
- 17:40S2: How many of you know that life isn't fair? If
- 17:44S2: you expect life to be fair in order to be happy,
- 17:48S2: then you will live unhappy. Life isn't fair. People don't
- 17:54S2: get treated the way they should. Bigotry exists. Racism exists,
- 18:00S2: prejudice exists. Some people get sick when other people don't.
- 18:06S2: Some people lose their jobs when other people don't. Some
- 18:09S2: people get bypassed in favor of others. Some parents show
- 18:13S2: favoritism to one child instead of another. Some people aren't
- 18:16S2: treated the same way as other people should be treated.
- 18:19S2: Some people are lied against. Sometimes you get cut and
- 18:23S2: you're the harder worker because someone has it in with
- 18:25S2: the boss. Sometimes you get cheated on by a spouse
- 18:30S2: and then they leave and blame it all on you.
- 18:32S2: Your bad attitude and walk away. Life is not fair,
- 18:38S2: but God is still present in the midst of the unfairness.
- 18:43S2: God is still the one that accompanies you through the
- 18:45S2: valley of unfairness. Now, what I've noticed in life is
- 18:54S2: I've noticed that it's very easy for us in the
- 19:00S2: middle of life to when it's unfair. It's very easy
- 19:04S2: for us to get knocked out of favor and to
- 19:05S2: begin to get some bitterness in our life. But I
- 19:07S2: want you to notice. I want you to notice what
- 19:10S2: happens to Joseph as he's in Potiphar's house. In verse five,
- 19:14S2: it says that the Lord was. It says that the
- 19:17S2: Lord was with them, and because God was with them,
- 19:21S2: even in his bad circumstances, he felt the favor of God.
- 19:27S2: He was a slave, but God was still with him.
- 19:34S2: You may be going through a difficult circumstance stance in
- 19:37S2: life right now, and just because you're a Christian doesn't
- 19:41S2: eliminate your bad circumstance. But what you can be sure
- 19:46S2: of is that the presence of God, if you allow
- 19:48S2: it to be, will travel with you in the middle
- 19:51S2: of that bad circumstance. And listen to me here. You
- 19:58S2: want the presence of God. Because even when your circumstances
- 20:02S2: is bad, when you have the presence of God, the
- 20:04S2: atmosphere changes. Something is different when you have the presence
- 20:09S2: of God even through the valley, when God is present.
- 20:13S2: Something is different. Notice what happens here in verse five.
- 20:17S2: It says. It says that Joseph, he, he prospered and
- 20:25S2: he lived in the house. Verse two, it says, he
- 20:26S2: prospered as he lived in the house of the Egyptian master.
- 20:29S2: And when the master saw that the Lord was with him,
- 20:33S2: and that the Lord had given him success in everything
- 20:36S2: he did, Joseph found favor, and he became the attendant.
- 20:41S2: When God was with Joseph, even in the midst of
- 20:44S2: his bad circumstances, people around him could tell that God
- 20:48S2: was with him. Potiphar, this powerful leader of the guard,
- 20:54S2: noticed that there was something different about Joseph. And I
- 20:59S2: want you to notice this about what Joseph did. And
- 21:02S2: it's a powerful indication of the presence of God. When
- 21:05S2: God is with you, I believe that as a believer,
- 21:09S2: the presence you carry, the presence of God wherever you go. Hello.
- 21:15S2: You say, pastor, you don't know the workplace that I
- 21:18S2: live in, that I work in. Man, it is godless.
- 21:21S2: They swear. They cheat. They. As soon as you walk
- 21:24S2: into that place, you have just bought the. Brought the
- 21:27S2: presence of God into that place. You say, I can't
- 21:31S2: wait to come to church because I feel the presence
- 21:34S2: of God. Guess what? If you're filled with the spirit,
- 21:36S2: you take the presence of God wherever you go. The
- 21:40S2: Bible says that Joseph, because God was with him. That
- 21:46S2: Potiphar put him in charge of his household and all
- 21:50S2: that he owned. And the Lord blessed the household of
- 21:53S2: the Egyptian. Why? Because of Joseph. The blessing of the
- 22:00S2: Lord was on everything that Potiphar had, both in his
- 22:03S2: house and his and in his field. Here's what I
- 22:07S2: want you to know. If you are a believer of
- 22:10S2: Jesus the Christ and he fills you, you carry the
- 22:14S2: presence of God wherever you go. And with the presence
- 22:17S2: of God comes a sense of God's favor. God will
- 22:21S2: look at a city, and God will withhold punishment upon
- 22:25S2: an entire city because there's 2 or 3 believers living there.
- 22:31S2: God will look at a people, and because you're there,
- 22:35S2: God will bless a people, a school, a business, a
- 22:38S2: place because one of his Josephs are there. That's the
- 22:44S2: hand of God. That's the blessing that the people of
- 22:46S2: God bring wherever they go.
- 22:58S1: Are you bringing that kind of blessing to others in
- 23:01S1: your life? We'll continue learning about how to be a
- 23:03S1: Joseph and the places we live when we return. For
- 23:06S1: part two of this lesson titled Don't Get Pushed Out
- 23:08S1: of Your Zone. And that's tomorrow here on Bold Steps
- 23:11S1: with Mark Jobe. But before then, be sure to go
- 23:14S1: to our website, Bold steps.org, and take advantage of the
- 23:17S1: unique opportunities and resources we've made available, like our special
- 23:21S1: Bold Step gift. You know, Mark, when the culture pushes
- 23:24S1: against our faith, there are usually two temptations. One is
- 23:27S1: to blend in and get quiet. The other is to
- 23:30S1: pull back and hide away from the world altogether. But
- 23:32S1: Scripture seems to call us to something different. And that's
- 23:35S1: where this bold step gift comes in. The Church in
- 23:37S1: Babylon by Erwin Lutzer. What does it look like practically,
- 23:40S1: for a believer to shine the light right where they
- 23:42S1: are in this culture?
- 23:44S2: You know, Erwin Lutzer points to Daniel in Babylon, and
- 23:49S2: it's a compelling, incredible story. How Daniel, he's not feisty, combative,
- 23:57S2: but he's Courageous and brave. True. And when everybody else
- 24:01S2: bows down, he stands up. And when everybody else is
- 24:05S2: told to eat a certain way, he says, no, I'm going.
- 24:07S2: To follow my values. And it's a great example of courage.
- 24:13S2: And he actually ends up gaining the respect of leaders
- 24:16S2: and ultimately influencing a nation because he refuses to compromise.
- 24:21S1: That's a good lesson for us.
- 24:22S2: It really is one. So I'm going to encourage you
- 24:26S2: to take heed to what Erwin Lutzer, the book he's written,
- 24:31S2: The Church in Babylon, because he encourages us not to
- 24:33S2: be silent, not to compromise, to be bold, but also
- 24:38S2: gracious in the stance that we take not to silence
- 24:42S2: our voice, not to hide, but to be salt and
- 24:46S2: light in the generation that's around us. There's some practical
- 24:49S2: advice about how to do that. Well.
