- 0:02Speaker 2: Glad to have you with us as well. As we mentioned,
- 0:06Speaker 2: you are always always welcome to visit us via the

- 0:29Speaker 2: So jumping into some NFL notes, I was just talking
- 0:34Speaker 2: about college results, some of the most surprising in the NFL.
- 0:41Speaker 2: How about the Patriots nineteen and the Bears three yesterday?
- 0:45Speaker 3: Where did that come from? I think we've seen the
- 0:49Speaker 3: end of Ebra Flus as the head coach and SHANEA.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Waldron as the oc just Bears team that was on
- 0:56Speaker 3: the up and up a few weeks ago, and now
- 0:58Speaker 3: I think with three straight losses and all have been
- 1:00Speaker 3: really ugly. Kill Williams was sacked I think nine times.
- 1:04Speaker 3: That's not helping him at all. You know, he as
- 1:08Speaker 3: a rookie quarterback. You want to be able to protect
- 1:10Speaker 3: your rookie quarterback, helping build the progress and develop as
- 1:14Speaker 3: a quarterback. And they're doing the exact opposite. So right
- 1:17Speaker 3: now things look bleak in Chicago, as you know they
- 1:20Speaker 3: usually do with this poor football franchise. But got to
- 1:25Speaker 3: get him some help in the coaching staff, get him
- 1:27Speaker 3: some helping the defensive line.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Eberflus says, Kayleb Williams will remain the storting quarterback?
- 1:33Speaker 1: Will he remain the head coach? Says? Everything else is
- 1:36Speaker 1: on the table, by the way toward that end.
- 1:39Speaker 2: And I know we've talked quite a bit about the
- 1:41Speaker 2: Cowboys today, but that's okay. Jerry was asked in that
- 1:44Speaker 2: wholeway thing where he was ranting about the curtains and
- 1:47Speaker 2: tearing down the whole damn thing and all that.
- 1:49Speaker 1: They asked him about.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Do you anticipate making a change before the season's over?
- 1:56Speaker 2: And he said I do not, And he said he's
- 1:59Speaker 2: regretted it ever since he when he let Wade Phillips
- 2:05Speaker 2: go in twenty ten, replaced with Jason Garrett and.
- 2:09Speaker 1: The coachmen away through the season. Yeah, so what he's saying.
- 2:12Speaker 2: And then he mentioned about letting chan Gaily go after
- 2:15Speaker 2: a couple of games away on back and said it
- 2:19Speaker 2: wasn't enough time. After three d you gotta let you
- 2:21Speaker 2: gotta let a you gotta let a guy have some time.
- 2:24Speaker 1: He said.
- 2:25Speaker 3: So there's no point in fire McCarthy right now. I mean,
- 2:28Speaker 3: what's done is done. And at this point, with all
- 2:30Speaker 3: the injuries and you're starting quarterback out for the year,
- 2:34Speaker 3: this team is crushed. It's over with. I mean, I
- 2:36Speaker 3: know they're mathematically still alive for the playoffs, but let's
- 2:39Speaker 3: be real, they are eliminated. So let's just get a good,
- 2:42Speaker 3: good draft pick and move on from McArthur at the
- 2:46Speaker 3: end of the year, and then let's see where we
- 2:48Speaker 3: go from there.
- 2:49Speaker 1: You see what Michael Parsons said when he was asked
- 2:51Speaker 1: about all of that, I did, and I thought it
- 2:53Speaker 1: was blown a little bit out of proportion.
- 2:55Speaker 2: He said, Well, first of all, when you're in the
- 2:58Speaker 2: locker room, and I've been in a lot of those
- 3:01Speaker 2: NFL locker rooms and the Cowboys locker room in the past,
- 3:05Speaker 2: you had a whole bunch of people, you know, with
- 3:07Speaker 2: microphones and different recording devices and things like that, and
- 3:12Speaker 2: they're pressed it on you pretty good, and it's kind
- 3:13Speaker 2: of hot and muggy and humid in there and all
- 3:16Speaker 2: that other kind of stuff, and they're asking a lot
- 3:19Speaker 2: of questions and maybe it'll elicit some answers that in
- 3:25Speaker 2: a different setting might not be the same.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Although I didn't think there was anything.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Damaging about what he said, he was asked if he
- 3:32Speaker 2: thought what he would tell people who were wondering whether
- 3:36Speaker 2: Mike McCarthy would be the head coach next year, and
- 3:40Speaker 2: his response was, quote, that's about my pay grade if
- 3:42Speaker 2: Mike's coach again next year. All coaching aside Mike and
- 3:45Speaker 2: leave and go where he wants to go. Guys I
- 3:47Speaker 2: kind of feel bad for is guys like Zach Martin
- 3:50Speaker 2: and guys who might be on their last year, on
- 3:51Speaker 2: their way out, because that's who I wanted to hold
- 3:53Speaker 2: the trophy for. You want to win games and do
- 3:55Speaker 2: great things with those types of legends who put in
- 3:58Speaker 2: more time and work than Mike McCarthy ever did. So
- 4:01Speaker 2: those are the kind of guys that have so much
- 4:03Speaker 2: sympathy and hurt for. I don't think it's that bad.
- 4:07Speaker 2: I mean, he's just saying I got my teammates here. Yeah,
- 4:09Speaker 2: there's nothing wrong with that quote, but I know it's
- 4:13Speaker 2: gotten some play because it sounds kind of flipping about
- 4:16Speaker 2: the head coach.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Yeah, when you just you know, taking out of context
- 4:20Speaker 3: like that. Like with any quote, and especially in sports,
- 4:22Speaker 3: it gets blown out of proportion. But I think what
- 4:25Speaker 3: he said makes sense, right. You mean, Zach Martin's one
- 4:27Speaker 3: of those Cowboy legends who's no Cowboys have come close
- 4:32Speaker 3: but have not gotten over that hump and likely will
- 4:36Speaker 3: end his career. You know, you think he'll be in
- 4:38Speaker 3: the Cowboys' Ring of Honor with Tyron Smith, and I
- 4:44Speaker 3: wish Travis Frederick get there. I don't think he will,
- 4:46Speaker 3: But those three guys, those three offensive linemen a huge
- 4:49Speaker 3: part of the Cowboys being so successful in contenders in
- 4:52Speaker 3: the last two decades. So I understand where Michael Parson's
- 4:55Speaker 3: coming from. And like you mentioned, Craig, they're coming off
- 4:59Speaker 3: of butt whopping in the locker room. You know, he's
- 5:02Speaker 3: not he's not thinking about Mike McCarthy in that in
- 5:04Speaker 3: that moment.
- 5:05Speaker 2: He was thinking about his teammates. Yeah, and I don't
- 5:07Speaker 2: think there's anything wrong with that. Some players, you know,
- 5:11Speaker 2: to stand up and say, hey, this is all us.
- 5:13Speaker 1: C J. Stroud did it. He said this game is
- 5:15Speaker 1: on me.
- 5:16Speaker 2: He put it all on himself, and it wasn't all
- 5:18Speaker 2: on him. He did have, you know, a critical interception
- 5:24Speaker 2: in the game, but Jared got threw five you know.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Now you know me, I'm kind of nerdy about these
- 5:33Speaker 2: historical factoids that come up. First of all, was that
- 5:37Speaker 2: one about the Cowboys. You heard that one, didn't you.
- 5:40Speaker 2: It's it's a gem which factoid about the Cowboys losing
- 5:45Speaker 2: at home.
- 5:47Speaker 1: One? Okay?
- 5:49Speaker 3: I heard the one about the last quarterbacks that throw
- 5:51Speaker 3: five interceptions in the game.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Yeah, that was good last night. I'll get to that
- 5:53Speaker 1: in a minute.
- 5:54Speaker 2: But the Dallas Cowboys yesterday became the first team in
- 6:01Speaker 2: the one hundred and four year history of the National Football.
- 6:04Speaker 1: League to.
- 6:07Speaker 2: And this speaks to the very reason why you don't
- 6:09Speaker 2: watch them, or why Cowboy fans are so just bent
- 6:13Speaker 2: out of shape. The Cowboys yesterday became the first team
- 6:17Speaker 2: in the history of the National Football League to lose
- 6:22Speaker 2: five straight home games by twenty or more points each.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Think about that for a moment.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Five straight home games by twenty or more points each.
- 6:39Speaker 2: That kind of tells you a lot of what you
- 6:41Speaker 2: need to know. I mean, even when Jerry World opened
- 6:45Speaker 2: in two thousand and nine, I guess it was it
- 6:48Speaker 2: was nine. I remember doing the final high school football
- 6:51Speaker 2: game ever at Texas Stadium, in Oa Carthage winning a
- 6:57Speaker 2: state championship there in two thousand and eight, but in
- 7:01Speaker 2: two thousand nine was first year. Even then they were
- 7:06Speaker 2: struggling to win at home. And it seemed like even
- 7:09Speaker 2: in the good years, even in the good years, like
- 7:14Speaker 2: last year, it drop an important game at home.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Last year had to be the playoff game. But you
- 7:19Speaker 1: know it's it's happened.
- 7:22Speaker 2: So now it's five in a row by twenty or
- 7:25Speaker 2: more points, which is a brand new NFL record.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Well, so is it five out of six? Track?
- 7:31Speaker 3: Because week three at home they only lost by three points.
- 7:34Speaker 3: I guess it's five out of six as they get
- 7:36Speaker 3: the double digit lost screen Bay. Then the playoffs last
- 7:39Speaker 3: year you lost by let's see twenty five to New
- 7:43Speaker 3: Orleans at home. In week two lost by ony three
- 7:47Speaker 3: to Baltimore. But then you lost You lost to Detroit
- 7:50Speaker 3: by thirty eight points at home in Philadelphia by twenty
- 7:54Speaker 3: eight points.
- 7:54Speaker 2: So by the last six thing, yeah, I guess. And
- 7:57Speaker 2: then there was that other one. This was here's this
- 8:03Speaker 2: We'll only tell you how old I am.
- 8:06Speaker 1: It said.
- 8:07Speaker 2: The Texans last night became the second team since nineteen
- 8:11Speaker 2: thirty three, that was the year they started a true
- 8:13Speaker 2: NFL championship game was nineteen thirty three, when they divided
- 8:16Speaker 2: into divisions in the East and the West, and the
- 8:17Speaker 2: Bears and the Giants meant in the first one in
- 8:19Speaker 2: nineteen thirty three, So if you start from that point,
- 8:25Speaker 2: they became the second team since nineteen thirty three to
- 8:30Speaker 2: lose a game in which they caught five interceptions, in
- 8:35Speaker 2: our words, intercepted the other team five times and led
- 8:39Speaker 2: by at least fifteen points, because they were up twenty
- 8:42Speaker 2: three to seven in that game and had five picks. Previously,
- 8:47Speaker 2: teams were three seventy three, one and one when leading
- 8:51Speaker 2: by at least fifteen and snagging five picks. Now here's
- 8:55Speaker 2: the part where shows how old I am. The other
- 8:58Speaker 2: time a team lost in that fact was Week eleven
- 9:00Speaker 2: in nineteen seventy. Nineteen seventy was the first year of
- 9:03Speaker 2: the merger and the Bears were playing the Colts, and
- 9:07Speaker 2: that was in an NFC and AFC team. It says
- 9:09Speaker 2: the Bears lost. The colt lost to the Colts twenty
- 9:12Speaker 2: one to twenty despite Johnny and I was one of
- 9:14Speaker 2: the greatest quarterbacks of all time throwing five interceptions. And
- 9:18Speaker 2: the thing is, I remember that game. I was watching
- 9:20Speaker 2: that game and I hated the Colts and didn't like
- 9:22Speaker 2: the Colts back then. And the Bears led twenty to
- 9:25Speaker 2: nothing in that game, and the Colts came back and
- 9:30Speaker 2: they won the game twenty one to twenty after that, So.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Didn't Did the Colts win it? Win Super Bowl that year? Yes?
- 9:38Speaker 1: They did? Super Bowl five? They beat the Cowboys, and.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Then the next year is a Jim Plunket He threw
- 9:43Speaker 3: five receptions too, and also won the Super Bowl? Is
- 9:46Speaker 3: that is that all correct?
- 9:47Speaker 1: No? Who was the next year? The Cowboys won it?
- 9:51Speaker 1: Okay they.
- 9:54Speaker 2: I think they probably intercepted Jim Plunkett five times. He
- 9:57Speaker 2: was a rookie that year in seventy one of the
- 9:58Speaker 2: Cowboys beat him at Texas Stadium.
- 10:00Speaker 3: League maybe he's also did he threw at five interceptions
- 10:03Speaker 3: in the season that year? Yeah, but I knew Uniteds
- 10:05Speaker 3: did it and then won the freaking Super Bowl. So
- 10:07Speaker 3: if you're a Lions fan, hey, Jared, God keep throwing
- 10:10Speaker 3: five receptions a game.
- 10:11Speaker 2: I'm here to tell you that first year of the
- 10:14Speaker 2: merger was a very strange year. And now I was
- 10:17Speaker 2: only ten years old, but I do remember a lot
- 10:20Speaker 2: about it and I've read a lot about it over
- 10:24Speaker 2: the years. How strange that nineteen seventy season was, because
- 10:30Speaker 2: in those days they did not award home field advantage.
- 10:33Speaker 1: They rotated who.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Got the play playoff games at home, and he had
- 10:38Speaker 2: the Vikings, who had the best defense but had an
- 10:40Speaker 2: awful offense because they couldn't come to contract terms with
- 10:43Speaker 2: Joe Capp and they let him leave and he went
- 10:45Speaker 2: to the then Boston Patriots, or last year as the
- 10:48Speaker 2: Boston Patriots before they changed their name. They had terrible offense.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Vikings did and lost a home playoff game to the
- 10:55Speaker 2: forty nine ers, and that was the other Cowboys beat
- 10:59Speaker 2: the Lions in the last playoff game ever played in
- 11:02Speaker 2: the Cotton Bowl, and the Cowboys won that game five
- 11:05Speaker 2: to nothing, five to nothing. And then the Cowboys go
- 11:10Speaker 2: to San Francisco, even though they had the better record
- 11:12Speaker 2: than the forty nine ers, and beat the forty nine
- 11:15Speaker 2: ers in the first ever NFC championship game at old
- 11:17Speaker 2: Keysar Stadium, which is now like a public park in
- 11:20Speaker 2: San Francisco. They moved into the Candlestick the next year
- 11:23Speaker 2: and the Cowboys won that and went to the Super
- 11:24Speaker 2: Bowl and the Colts, who had more turnovers than the
- 11:28Speaker 2: Cowboys in the Super Bowl. Should have lost that game,
- 11:32Speaker 2: but the Cowboys couldn't couldn't put it together in Craig
- 11:36Speaker 2: Morton through an untimely interception late and they lost sixteen thirteen.
- 11:39Speaker 1: So I'd have six six rings.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Could could very easily have that one, that one for sure.
- 11:47Speaker 2: So anyway, that's that was a couple of the weird
- 11:50Speaker 2: numbers that have come out of the NFL weekend. How
- 11:52Speaker 2: about the Falcons losing to the Saints. Saints were awful,
- 11:56Speaker 2: they'd lost seven in a row and fired the coach.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Well the chief, you know, fighting away to win again
- 12:02Speaker 2: and stay alive, block a field goal when it looked
- 12:04Speaker 2: like the Broncos and everything to win.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Hey, break up your Panthers. Two wins in a row, right, they.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Beat the beat the Giants in Germany. Did you see
- 12:14Speaker 2: the film that with all the fans that are singing
- 12:16Speaker 2: take Me Home Country Roads. Yeah, it was kind of
- 12:19Speaker 2: weird that, you know, but whatever.
- 12:22Speaker 3: Usually they sing, uh, you know, what's the song up
- 12:25Speaker 3: in Chapel Hill they play at basketball games there for
- 12:27Speaker 3: UNC at the Dean Dome. It's not taking Home Country Roads,
- 12:31Speaker 3: it's the other Oh boy.
- 12:35Speaker 2: They should see you that nothing could be finer than
- 12:37Speaker 2: to be in Carolina. But that's not it.
- 12:39Speaker 3: But I'm surprised Brian Devil returned from London with the Giants.
- 12:44Speaker 3: I'm surprised he did not just go ahead.
- 12:45Speaker 2: I think he's gonna be allowed to finish out the season.
- 12:48Speaker 2: It's probably what's gonna happen. He'll finish the season, all right.
- 12:50Speaker 2: We'll hear more from Longmorns head coach Steve Sarkza coming
- 12:53Speaker 2: up on Sports Radio AM thirteen Under the Zone.
