- 1:44Speaker 3: We've got a guy who who we've had on last
- 1:47Speaker 3: season play by player, Voice of the Steelers, Rob King. Rob,
- 1:52Speaker 3: as we said, Falsh, welcome back in. How are you
- 1:54Speaker 3: doing money good?
- 1:56Speaker 4: I'm doing great, Michael. Thank you very much for having
- 1:58Speaker 4: me on. Appreciate it.
- 2:00Speaker 3: We're joking of off camera and that day. The furvist
- 2:05Speaker 3: you've got since is still new Gring so hopefully lands
- 2:09Speaker 3: ahead to get maybe a bit further and Orfic you're
- 2:11Speaker 3: around the island a bit more.
- 2:12Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I'd love it. I mean I've been I've
- 2:14Speaker 4: been out west to Galway and then up north of
- 2:17Speaker 4: Galway and some of the islands out there, and I've
- 2:20Speaker 4: been to the southeast or southwest and around, but I
- 2:23Speaker 4: haven't been up to the Northern Park, so I need
- 2:25Speaker 4: to get up there and eventually would like to get
- 2:28Speaker 4: up there with my golf clubs, because you've got some
- 2:29Speaker 4: of the greatest golf courses in the world right there.
- 2:32Speaker 5: The Oakland in royal Port, Russia this year as well.
- 2:35Speaker 3: It's funny because as good as it is rob On,
- 2:37Speaker 3: people in Ireland listening to this will know we have
- 2:40Speaker 3: not seen the sun for over ten days. It's been
- 2:44Speaker 3: clouds here, so you're definitely picking a better time during
- 2:48Speaker 3: the year if you do get over.
- 2:49Speaker 5: But yeah, it's it's very overcast.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Especially it's like I don't think I haven't seen the
- 2:53Speaker 3: suns in the Super Bowl, which is even more money.
- 2:55Speaker 4: Oh that gets a little old after a while, but yeah,
- 2:58Speaker 4: it's understood. Hopefully they're hopefully it'll be nice and sunny
- 3:01Speaker 4: whenever they're going to play this game.
- 3:02Speaker 3: We have the chance to see you or hear you
- 3:05Speaker 3: as well on televisions on Virgin Media when the preseason
- 3:09Speaker 3: was on television over here in August, and for yourself,
- 3:14Speaker 3: that was awesome to see, especially when you chop with
- 3:15Speaker 3: somebody and then see them with TV. You know, we're
- 3:18Speaker 3: sitting here weeks after you've completed your first year as
- 3:21Speaker 3: the Playboy advice of the Staters. It's one thing to
- 3:23Speaker 3: ask someone how did you find the first year? But
- 3:26Speaker 3: I think anybody working into the game and any fun
- 3:29Speaker 3: watching the game that was It's a long season.
- 3:31Speaker 5: There's there's a lot going on as well.
- 3:34Speaker 3: How did you find it where you saw that the
- 3:36Speaker 3: season obviously came to his natural land.
- 3:38Speaker 4: Yeah, especially the way it did when the team started
- 3:40Speaker 4: ten and three. I thought we were going to have
- 3:42Speaker 4: a longer run in the playoffs, and then obviously the
- 3:46Speaker 4: way the season ended and then onto the playoffs as
- 3:48Speaker 4: a disappointing finish. But it was a it was a
- 3:51Speaker 4: lot of fun and they gave us a lot to
- 3:54Speaker 4: get excited about during that ten and three start. And
- 3:57Speaker 4: you know, I enjoyed everything about the job. I enjoyed
- 4:00Speaker 4: the process. I enjoy I mean I've told this to people.
- 4:03Speaker 4: I enjoy memorizing rosters. I enjoy watching tape. I enjoyed
- 4:07Speaker 4: talking to players and coaches, and I enjoy the you know,
- 4:11Speaker 4: the the wonderful people we have, not only you know,
- 4:15Speaker 4: the broadcast crew, the folks behind the scenes as well.
- 4:18Speaker 4: It's just, uh, it was just a wonderful season.
- 4:22Speaker 3: We hobnestly had to wait a little while for the
- 4:24Speaker 3: home opener this year. We had a couple of games
- 4:27Speaker 3: on the road. When did it hit you in a
- 4:29Speaker 3: good way that you know, this was your gig? And
- 4:33Speaker 3: did it hit you for the first home opener or
- 4:34Speaker 3: was it the preseason whenever you have, mister riny besides you,
- 4:37Speaker 3: how did you how did you find it?
- 4:39Speaker 5: And when did it hit you?
- 4:41Speaker 4: Actually it was longer than that. I mean, it was enjoyable,
- 4:46Speaker 4: and it kind of you know, you know, it's interesting.
- 4:50Speaker 4: My wife asked me, you know, when I got the job,
- 4:52Speaker 4: She's like, you know, what, when do you need to
- 4:54Speaker 4: start like exhibiting this you know, you've got the Steelers
- 4:58Speaker 4: job kind of thing. And I think, you know, they
- 4:59Speaker 4: cou'd probably a guy thing. It's like, hey, I gotta
- 5:01Speaker 4: get to work at of ll sleeves. Let's go. And
- 5:04Speaker 4: and so I was doing a lot of that certainly
- 5:06Speaker 4: enjoying the process, having a blast. You know. But when
- 5:10Speaker 4: I walked into the booth in Cleveland for that Thursday
- 5:15Speaker 4: night game, you know, the snow globe game, uh, I
- 5:18Speaker 4: think that's kind of when it really hit me. I
- 5:20Speaker 4: was like, wow, this is uh, this is great. And
- 5:23Speaker 4: so ever since then, you just you know, I was
- 5:25Speaker 4: already happy. You You couldn't wipe the smile off my face.
- 5:28Speaker 4: I mean, it's just been it's just been such a
- 5:30Speaker 4: wonderful experience.
- 5:33Speaker 5: You're you're, you're keeping that lightly.
- 5:35Speaker 3: I remember watching the build up to that Thursday night
- 5:37Speaker 3: game at one o'clock in the morning here that was
- 5:39Speaker 3: cold month like that.
- 5:41Speaker 5: That was cool.
- 5:42Speaker 3: And I know you guys are the windows, but that's
- 5:44Speaker 3: still cold, you know nothing, that's yeah.
- 5:47Speaker 4: Yeah, we we we were all the windows up, just
- 5:50Speaker 4: so you know. Now Max Starks and Missy Matthews are
- 5:53Speaker 4: down on the field and they're bundled up and they
- 5:55Speaker 4: are walking around a little bit. It's certainly colder for them.
- 5:59Speaker 4: But we a wolf and I have the windows open.
- 6:02Speaker 4: You just can't feel the game unless you can hear
- 6:05Speaker 4: the crowd and the elements. You know, you need to
- 6:08Speaker 4: feel all that stuff. Sometimes the booth gets hot more
- 6:11Speaker 4: often than not. It gets cold sometimes, you know. I
- 6:14Speaker 4: can't remember which game we were. I think it was
- 6:16Speaker 4: Baltimore where the windows was like, you know, a little above,
- 6:20Speaker 4: a little below, and the open part was in the middle.
- 6:22Speaker 4: So it took me here to your waist, your cold,
- 6:25Speaker 4: your feet were warm, you know. But you can't you
- 6:29Speaker 4: can't do the game unless you're feeling the elements and
- 6:31Speaker 4: feeling what the fans are feeling, feeling what the players
- 6:34Speaker 4: are feeling. But having said that, a little tougher on
- 6:37Speaker 4: Max and Missy being down there in the field in
- 6:39Speaker 4: a game like that.
- 6:40Speaker 5: I can imagine one.
- 6:41Speaker 3: And it's funny you mentioned that, and when Tam and
- 6:45Speaker 3: flee situation. A lot of ups, a lot of dins
- 6:48Speaker 3: this season, and I have the chance, I just miss you.
- 6:52Speaker 5: I was the game of Christmas Day.
- 6:55Speaker 3: The atmosphere for me was a special regardless a result,
- 6:58Speaker 3: it really really is something else before you this season?
- 7:01Speaker 3: Do you have like a fever giy fever player that
- 7:03Speaker 3: you commented it on.
- 7:04Speaker 4: So now, first of all, you've got to you gotta
- 7:06Speaker 4: contact me next time you come. Man, come on Christmas Day.
- 7:10Speaker 4: I'd have been.
- 7:12Speaker 5: There.
- 7:12Speaker 4: You know, they're at the they were at the game,
- 7:14Speaker 4: I was working, and I would have loved to see
- 7:16Speaker 4: you next time. Okay, next time, let me know and
- 7:19Speaker 4: I'll see when I'll see you when we're in Ireland.
- 7:22Speaker 4: You know, I think probably uh, you know, there there
- 7:25Speaker 4: are a few of them that stick out the uh.
- 7:28Speaker 4: The game against Washington was a terrific game, and that
- 7:32Speaker 4: throw down the sideline from Russell Wilson uh to Mike
- 7:35Speaker 4: Williams for the touchdown. You know, you're you're thinking they're
- 7:38Speaker 4: gonna kind of inst their way and try to maybe
- 7:40Speaker 4: get his score, and all of a sudden boom, there's
- 7:42Speaker 4: the long touchdown pass to put this teethers up and
- 7:44Speaker 4: then of course to see this defense had to hold.
- 7:47Speaker 4: The Cincinnati game was a marvelous shootout, lots of fun.
- 7:51Speaker 4: The one in Cincinnati which is Steelers one, and then
- 7:53Speaker 4: the first game against the Ravens that win and then
- 7:56Speaker 4: holding off on a two point conversion. It's hard to
- 7:59Speaker 4: separate those. I think we're we're the most fun. I mean,
- 8:03Speaker 4: the Cincinnati game was just NonStop, so that was fun too.
- 8:06Speaker 4: But the Commander's game is a great game and the
- 8:09Speaker 4: raven so it would be hard to pick. Could be
- 8:11Speaker 4: like picking my favorite child. It would be hard to
- 8:13Speaker 4: pick my favorite among those. But I enjoyed all three
- 8:16Speaker 4: for sure, and I enjoyed the whole season.
- 8:18Speaker 3: And they allow our big moments to come as well,
- 8:20Speaker 3: not just in twenty five, but done the stretches as well.
- 8:22Speaker 3: I actually run in the Wolf on the All Choans
- 8:25Speaker 3: on Christmas Day, so definitely next time.
- 8:27Speaker 5: What was it like working with him this season?
- 8:30Speaker 4: He's the best. I mean, he and I had worked
- 8:32Speaker 4: together for I don't know, maybe ten years, Michael doing
- 8:36Speaker 4: high school football game. So high school football is very
- 8:39Speaker 4: big in western Pennsylvania, very big in Pittsburgh, and so
- 8:43Speaker 4: we would carry it at the TV station for which
- 8:46Speaker 4: I work. We would carry a game of the week
- 8:48Speaker 4: and Wolf. So Wolf and I work together. We'd known
- 8:52Speaker 4: each other a little before then, but that's our friendship
- 8:55Speaker 4: really started there. And he's just a wonderful guy to
- 8:59Speaker 4: work with. You know, no ego, lots of energy, great insight.
- 9:05Speaker 4: I mean, I don't know what more you can ask
- 9:07Speaker 4: out of somebody. And by the way, I would say
- 9:08Speaker 4: the same thing about Max and Missy. You know, all
- 9:13Speaker 4: anybody cares about on that crew is putting forth the
- 9:16Speaker 4: best product available and sometimes you get people that you
- 9:19Speaker 4: know want to get their thing in or their sticking
- 9:21Speaker 4: or whatever. There's none of that, you know, Missy is
- 9:25Speaker 4: is constantly updating us on stuff.
- 9:27Speaker 5: You know.
- 9:27Speaker 4: I think other people would say, well, I'm only gonna
- 9:30Speaker 4: update you when I'm on the air. Missy's constantly updating
- 9:33Speaker 4: us behind the scenes. She's great, the whole, the whole crew.
- 9:36Speaker 4: Obviously I work most closely with Wolf, but I work
- 9:40Speaker 4: you know, we're in constant communication and they're they're just
- 9:43Speaker 4: the whole crew is terrific. Wolf's the blast. So to
- 9:45Speaker 4: answer your question, he's just he what you hear in
- 9:48Speaker 4: the air, that's him in real life. There's not a
- 9:51Speaker 4: phony bone in his body.
- 9:53Speaker 1: He is.
- 9:53Speaker 5: He's all Wolf.
- 9:54Speaker 3: He's the best I can I can attest to what
- 9:57Speaker 3: you said about Missy because I wanted to say hello
- 9:59Speaker 3: to or A on the sideline. I could see she's
- 10:01Speaker 3: shotting to you guys two and a half hours before
- 10:04Speaker 3: carack offs, so we can definitely test that. Look, let's
- 10:07Speaker 3: sort of fast forward tonight. NFL combines next week. I'm
- 10:10Speaker 3: actually there's a few of us heading out to Indianapolis
- 10:11Speaker 3: next week, really really excited to see some of the
- 10:14Speaker 3: talent that's coming into this draft. How would you analyze
- 10:17Speaker 3: as somebody that's off was the being at each game
- 10:20Speaker 3: and seeing every every snap from the Steelers team in
- 10:22Speaker 3: twenty twenty four. How would you analyze where we are currently?
- 10:26Speaker 3: Is there any certain development that you'd like to see
- 10:28Speaker 3: over the next few months or any sort of positional
- 10:30Speaker 3: improvement or are you very much a guy that's sort
- 10:32Speaker 3: of wait and see and trust in the process.
- 10:34Speaker 4: Well, so, first of all, I'll see you in Indianapolis, right,
- 10:37Speaker 4: if you're gonna be there, let's come on now, let's
- 10:39Speaker 4: do it, right.
- 10:40Speaker 5: I will see you on Friday, my friend.
- 10:42Speaker 4: Okay, fantastic. Well I'll be there Monday, So I'll see
- 10:47Speaker 4: you there and we'll look forward to Monday through Friday.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Now you say this Friday or next Friday.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Friday week and for people listening and hoping to have
- 10:53Speaker 3: a little Steelers podcast from Indianapolis, So the day before
- 10:56Speaker 3: the quarterback workouts, which is next suspect Friday, we'll.
- 11:01Speaker 4: See you there and that would be that would be
- 11:03Speaker 4: wonderful if we could get together. So, you know, I
- 11:08Speaker 4: think that what we saw down the stretch, a lot
- 11:11Speaker 4: of it was, you know, first they have to figure
- 11:14Speaker 4: out the quarterback situation. As as we're speaking now, I
- 11:18Speaker 4: don't you know, they haven't made a decision yet whether
- 11:20Speaker 4: they're going to go internal or whether they're going to
- 11:22Speaker 4: go external. That's the big story that we're all waiting for, obviously.
- 11:26Speaker 4: And you know, as you see down the stretch, as
- 11:29Speaker 4: the path gets narrower, as Mike Tomlin likes to say,
- 11:32Speaker 4: you usually end up with an elite quarterback leading the way.
- 11:36Speaker 4: And you know, Jalen Hurts, maybe he's a little below
- 11:38Speaker 4: that elite level. But that then brings you to the
- 11:40Speaker 4: next subject is how much the Eagles just dominated in
- 11:44Speaker 4: the trenches. And this too, there's spent a lot of
- 11:46Speaker 4: time on the offensive line. In in recent draft, they
- 11:50Speaker 4: did draft Keanu Betton in the second round, but I
- 11:52Speaker 4: believe that they will probably go in that direction because
- 11:56Speaker 4: that's what they want to do, what we saw in Philadelphia.
- 11:59Speaker 4: You know, if you have big, strong guys up front,
- 12:02Speaker 4: Yes you need skill players, I understand that, but that
- 12:05Speaker 4: plays well no matter the conditions. You know, you get rainy,
- 12:07Speaker 4: snowy conditions, maybe the passing game isn't that effective. Well,
- 12:11Speaker 4: big guys, you know, running over other big guys works
- 12:15Speaker 4: and no matter what weather it is. So I think
- 12:17Speaker 4: that's gonna be a point of emphasis. You know, they
- 12:19Speaker 4: need to get a wide receiver, you know, I would
- 12:23Speaker 4: they're they're gonna have. They have to address the running
- 12:25Speaker 4: back situation. They haven't closed the door Najie Harris coming
- 12:27Speaker 4: back for another season or perhaps beyond. Jalen Warrens are
- 12:30Speaker 4: restricted free agent. So I think, in no particular order,
- 12:35Speaker 4: the biggest priorities are probably certainly figuring out quarterback, defensive line.
- 12:42Speaker 4: And I don't know whether they'll by the way draft
- 12:44Speaker 4: the quarterback you talking about the combines, They may they
- 12:46Speaker 4: may address that before we get to the combines, the
- 12:48Speaker 4: quarterback situation, but I think they're looking at d line.
- 12:51Speaker 4: It's supposed to be a very very deep running back draft,
- 12:55Speaker 4: not quite as deep. I don't think in wide receivers.
- 12:57Speaker 4: They may address that in free agency, and obviously see
- 13:00Speaker 4: what they do in free agency will impact what direction
- 13:03Speaker 4: they would go in the draft. But I think those
- 13:04Speaker 4: are the biggest needs for the team.
- 13:07Speaker 3: I think Rob for a lot of Europeans listening and
- 13:10Speaker 3: a lot of guys that maybe we've a lot of
- 13:12Speaker 3: new listeners, and you're very very welcome that have seen
- 13:14Speaker 3: the recent news about Europe and you're all very very welcome.
- 13:17Speaker 3: We do have a long offseason. The good thing for
- 13:19Speaker 3: us is we have a lot to talk about it
- 13:20Speaker 3: and you've just mentioned a number of things there. So
- 13:22Speaker 3: it's going to be a really interesting few weeks and
- 13:24Speaker 3: months and obviously looking forward to seeing you at the
- 13:26Speaker 3: Combine next week. Just you know, we have to touch
- 13:29Speaker 3: on the news leading into that. We all know what's happening.
- 13:33Speaker 3: The Steers are coming to Dublin later on this year.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Dates time opponent will be announced later on this year.
- 13:38Speaker 3: But Rob to go into your second year to have
- 13:42Speaker 3: a chance not just to call an international game, but
- 13:45Speaker 3: to call the first ever game regular season game in Ireland.
- 13:48Speaker 3: And as that somebody that's been the cool park many times,
- 13:50Speaker 3: I can tell you it's gonna be really really special.
- 13:53Speaker 3: When did you or I'll not ask when, but what
- 13:57Speaker 3: was your thoughts whenever you find out that the team
- 13:59Speaker 3: we're to go, Because it's really really exciting and I
- 14:02Speaker 3: think I speak for a lot of people over here.
- 14:03Speaker 3: It's got the favorite pitch and we're sitting in w A.
- 14:07Speaker 4: Yeah, it's it's really really exciting. I mean, obviously the
- 14:11Speaker 4: Steelers have the great connection with mister Rooney being the ambassador,
- 14:16Speaker 4: you know, and the Rooney name. Obviously. I'm half Irish myself.
- 14:22Speaker 4: I've been to Ireland a couple of times and love
- 14:25Speaker 4: the country, loved the people, love the passion. I can't
- 14:30Speaker 4: I can't wait. I mean, I just I can't wait
- 14:33Speaker 4: for the game. I just think it's gonna be an
- 14:35Speaker 4: absolute spectacle. I suspect that the the Irish people, you know.
- 14:40Speaker 4: And I was over there. I watched a little. I
- 14:42Speaker 4: watched the Gaelic football game. I was way back Leith
- 14:46Speaker 4: and Mouth, I think, where the team's playing for the championship,
- 14:48Speaker 4: and I was watching on TV. And I believe, as
- 14:51Speaker 4: I recall, a fan jumped onto the field and maybe
- 14:55Speaker 4: took a swing at one of the officials. So you
- 14:57Speaker 4: could see the passion from the Irish and uh and
- 15:02Speaker 4: you have to give me a crash course, by the way,
- 15:03Speaker 4: and Gaelic football when I see you, I'd like to
- 15:05Speaker 4: learn more about the sport. But I think that the
- 15:08Speaker 4: passion is obvious. And to be over there and to
- 15:11Speaker 4: see the game, the great game of football spreading, and
- 15:14Speaker 4: to be able to be there in Ireland for the
- 15:16Speaker 4: first one there let's go, man, I can't wait for it.
- 15:20Speaker 5: It's very special because you think goals.
- 15:23Speaker 3: I think overall when I had the chance to go
- 15:25Speaker 3: to the first game in Germany, and obviously Tom Brady
- 15:27Speaker 3: was right, this is the same level for me. It's
- 15:30Speaker 3: not more of the family's connection and it's so exciting
- 15:33Speaker 3: the scene. What's going to happen over the next few
- 15:35Speaker 3: weeks and months as we get closer to this And
- 15:37Speaker 3: just second last question for me, what's the mood like
- 15:40Speaker 3: in Pittsburgh. It seems like there's not just excitement in Ireland,
