- 0:09Speaker 1: The last ex-Halo standing in the postseason is not Shohei Otani.
- 0:15Speaker 1: It's Joe Adele with the Cleveland Guardians. A little bit
- 0:18Speaker 1: of an upset there, Mark. Well, we've got an interesting
- 0:21Speaker 1: show for you today. We're going to talk about five
- 0:23Speaker 1: guys each of us don't think is going to be
- 0:26Speaker 1: back with the Halos next season. But we did want
- 0:29Speaker 1: to touch on Joe Adele a little bit. We were
- 0:32Speaker 1: taping on a Monday early afternoon right before Game 6
- 0:36Speaker 1: of the ALCS. Mark, what... what's it been like watching
- 0:39Speaker 1: Joe in the post season? That's, uh, it's, it's always
- 0:42Speaker 1: interesting sometimes when you see a guy like Joe who
- 0:44Speaker 1: has never played in October with the angels, especially the
- 0:48Speaker 1: last few years, seeing how they respond to that October pressure,
- 0:52Speaker 1: that October stage, what's your, uh, what's your impressions been
- 0:55Speaker 1: on Joe so far?
- 0:58Speaker 2: It looks like Joe looks like him out there. I
- 1:01Speaker 2: think that the, uh, he's contributed at times. Um, I
- 1:07Speaker 2: think the overall slash line is awfully reminiscent of the
- 1:10Speaker 2: player that we know very well. But he does look
- 1:16Speaker 2: competitive up there in the box. He's done a pretty
- 1:19Speaker 2: good job limiting the strikeouts. I think he's got 11
- 1:22Speaker 2: and 30 at bat. So while that is trending towards
- 1:25Speaker 2: somewhat high, the pitching is also as good as you're
- 1:29Speaker 2: going to see all year. So he's hanging in there.
- 1:31Speaker 2: He's hanging tough. He provides that. That right-handed thump that
- 1:35Speaker 2: the Guardians need, they look like they're in trouble starting
- 1:40Speaker 2: an opener, I believe, today. If you're starting multiple openers,
- 1:45Speaker 2: I mean, in your opinion, do you think you really
- 1:47Speaker 2: belong in the World Series?
- 1:49Speaker 1: I mean, we've seen this. There are certain teams, I mean,
- 1:53Speaker 1: even the Dodgers, when they won in 24, their rotation
- 1:56Speaker 1: was shot by the World Series, and they somehow survived
- 2:00Speaker 1: with like two and a half starters, although they didn't really...
- 2:03Speaker 1: I think they used an opener in a couple of
- 2:05Speaker 1: those games. But, yeah, Cleveland, their staff is thinning out,
- 2:12Speaker 1: but their bullpen is a strength, so you can't really
- 2:14Speaker 1: blame them. I just think right now it's an all-hands-on-deck situation.
- 2:20Speaker 1: But as far as Joe Adele, it's been interesting. They've
- 2:23Speaker 1: had him in the cleanup spot the whole time, and
- 2:25Speaker 1: I don't even think he hit cleanup for the Angels
- 2:27Speaker 1: for a lot of the year. So that kind of
- 2:30Speaker 1: tells you what they think of him. Interestingly, they have
- 2:32Speaker 1: not had him in the field. despite the night we
- 2:35Speaker 1: saw against the Mariners early in the year where he
- 2:38Speaker 1: robbed three home runs. Yeah, he had two really big RBI.
- 2:42Speaker 1: He had an RBI triple and a basis clearing triple
- 2:44Speaker 1: in the division series against the White Sox, and that
- 2:48Speaker 1: three-run triple kind of sparked or really led him toward
- 2:51Speaker 1: that game three win that turned that whole series around. And, yeah,
- 2:55Speaker 1: there are times where he unfortunately has looked like the
- 2:58Speaker 1: Joe O'Dell that we know all too well, swinging at
- 3:01Speaker 1: sweepers way outside the zone, but... I forget who it
- 3:04Speaker 1: was against the other day over the weekend. He had
- 3:07Speaker 1: on that bat where he swung two sweepers. Oh, and
- 3:10Speaker 1: to count. I'm like, I'm almost like literally yelling at
- 3:14Speaker 1: my team TV. Come on, Joe. You know, it's like,
- 3:17Speaker 1: you know how they're going to pitch to you next
- 3:19Speaker 1: two pitches, sweepers away. He laid off them. And I
- 3:22Speaker 1: forget what he did the pitch, but he ended up
- 3:24Speaker 1: hitting a single right up the middle. I can't remember
- 3:26Speaker 1: if a drove in a run or contributing to a rally.
- 3:29Speaker 1: So yeah, the adjustments have been a little better. But
- 3:33Speaker 1: it's just really good to see, you know, a guy
- 3:35Speaker 1: like him get a shot in October. As you know,
- 3:40Speaker 1: all too well, Mark, you never know when your next
- 3:42Speaker 1: chance is going to come. Sometimes you only get one.
- 3:44Speaker 1: And boy, you just, you learn to just sort of
- 3:47Speaker 1: relish these as a player.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Well said. If you get the opportunity, I think some
- 3:52Speaker 2: guys might become bored of them.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I know. It's crazy.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Year after year. And some guys, very few. Myself, one
- 4:00Speaker 2: and done. Just one wild card game. And that was it.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Shakes out the way it does, for better or worse.
- 4:08Speaker 2: I did enjoy my loan experience. And I guess I
- 4:11Speaker 2: can relate a little bit to what these guys are doing.
- 4:14Speaker 2: But for the teams that, you know, year after year
- 4:17Speaker 2: are there when it counts. I do wonder if the
- 4:21Speaker 2: motivation is as high, you know, it's tough to sustain
- 4:25Speaker 2: anything for, for, um, that long. Uh, so I think
- 4:29Speaker 2: it's very fun to watch. We'll see Milwaukee is, uh,
- 4:32Speaker 2: they got, you know, extended break, but I'm not sure
- 4:35Speaker 2: either of these two teams, although they're a very different
- 4:37Speaker 2: matchup than the team that they just took on and
- 4:40Speaker 2: steamrolled over. These other teams may have something that at
- 4:44Speaker 2: least gives them a little more fight. The Padres put
- 4:46Speaker 2: up more of a fight, um, I guess the only
- 4:49Speaker 2: thing I was– are you the one that had the
- 4:51Speaker 2: winning bid for Shohei's jersey, the game-worn jersey?
- 4:55Speaker 1: Fell just short. I think my bid was $ 2 million, which,
- 4:59Speaker 1: you know, with the money we're making on this podcast,
- 5:02Speaker 1: clearly would have been no problem. I thought you might
- 5:06Speaker 1: have been in there. 2.05, I think, just beat me
- 5:10Speaker 1: out a little just by a hair. Just by a hair.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Couldn't believe it.
- 5:14Speaker 2: On the phone, like a Christie's calling you saying.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Nope, you bowed out. Maybe next time.
- 5:21Speaker 2: What was that? Shake said that the jersey went for
- 5:24Speaker 2: more than he made this year.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Well, I guess with the deferral, I guess he made
- 5:30Speaker 1: $ 2 million in his paychecks. It'd be funny to see
- 5:33Speaker 1: his paychecks at $ 2 million per. But I believe he's
- 5:37Speaker 1: making well over $ 100 million in endorsements. Can you even
- 5:41Speaker 1: imagine that kind of crazy money? I mean, he's going
- 5:44Speaker 1: to be a billionaire maybe two times over by the
- 5:47Speaker 1: time all this happens.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Yeah, you might be right. And really, we'll get to
- 5:52Speaker 2: the main topic in a second, but with all these
- 5:55Speaker 2: arguments and I don't know what Shohei is bringing in endorsements,
- 5:58Speaker 2: especially in Japan. And we also don't know what a
- 6:01Speaker 2: lot of these ownership groups are making with the CBA
- 6:06Speaker 2: and other things. I think that it really helps to
- 6:09Speaker 2: have the complete picture. And, um, well, why did Shohei
- 6:14Speaker 2: defer so much money? Well, he probably can afford to
- 6:17Speaker 2: do it many, many times over. Um, so, We'll see
- 6:21Speaker 2: if the deferral part of it, a hot button topic.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Many do not like them, don't like opt outs, don't
- 6:27Speaker 2: like a lot of these things. I don't know how
- 6:30Speaker 2: much they will change, but probably not my favorite either,
- 6:33Speaker 2: to be honest. Years and dollars. That seems to make sense.
- 6:37Speaker 2: But all right. We'll let you get to the topic
- 6:40Speaker 2: at the end.
- 6:40Speaker 1: All right. And that deferral is going to be a
- 6:42Speaker 1: sticking point in these CBA talks for sure. So, five
- 6:46Speaker 1: angels who we don't think are going to be back.
- 6:48Speaker 1: We thought the way we'd format this is we each
- 6:51Speaker 1: have a list of five. We're going to go from
- 6:54Speaker 1: the top of that list down and see if that
- 6:59Speaker 1: person is also on the other person's list. So, you
- 7:02Speaker 1: want me to start? You want me to kick us off, Mark?
- 7:06Speaker 2: I mean, in truth, I have a flimsy list. I
- 7:09Speaker 2: will try.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 7:10Speaker 2: This is somewhat of a loose script, as in …
- 7:14Speaker 2: Not much of a script or no script. But I
- 7:17Speaker 2: think this topic, we're going to do the best we can.
- 7:19Speaker 2: There are some obvious ones that we are leaving out.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Maybe you should start with a couple of no-brainers.
- 7:26Speaker 1: It might be a shock to fans at this point,
- 7:28Speaker 1: but Anthony Rendon will not be back with the Angels
- 7:31Speaker 1: next year. Sadly, his seven-year, $ 245 million contract that paid
- 7:39Speaker 1: close to zero dividends has expired.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Uh, wow.
- 7:43Speaker 1: You know, and I had to go back. This was
- 7:45Speaker 1: not a Perry Manassian contract. Remember, this is a Billy Epler,
- 7:50Speaker 1: Artie Moreno production all the way. In fact, it was
- 7:53Speaker 1: probably more of an Artie Moreno production. He had, you know,
- 7:57Speaker 1: Anthony in his defense came off a great year with
- 8:00Speaker 1: the nationals. They won the world series career year. They
- 8:03Speaker 1: finished third in the NL MVP voting. I mean, uh,
- 8:07Speaker 1: He looked like everything the Angels need, you know, a
- 8:10Speaker 1: really good third baseman, provided power, consistency, everything you want
- 8:14Speaker 1: in a third baseman, and wow. He had a decent
- 8:17Speaker 1: year in 2020, the COVID year, but after that just
- 8:20Speaker 1: fell off the face of the earth with injuries. Correct
- 8:23Speaker 1: me if I'm wrong.
- 8:24Speaker 2: He was not a Garrett Cole pivot, was he? He was.
- 8:28Speaker 1: The Angels went hot after Garrett Cole that winter, and
- 8:31Speaker 1: it's almost like Artie had, you know, $ 250 million, $ 300
- 8:34Speaker 1: million burning in his pocket. And it's like, I'm going
- 8:38Speaker 1: to spend it somewhere. And boy, did that set this
- 8:41Speaker 1: franchise back at least five or six years. And then
- 8:45Speaker 1: the other guy.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Well, I mean, if you have a pivot, usually maybe
- 8:50Speaker 2: the amount of homework done. And quite truthfully, I mean,
- 8:54Speaker 2: I'd heard he wasn't that into baseball. We've heard this
- 8:56Speaker 2: for a while. And I'd heard that casually and I
- 8:58Speaker 2: didn't think anything of it. But if I heard that,
- 9:00Speaker 2: I'd run.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Yes, exactly. So that was a huge one. And then,
- 9:06Speaker 1: you know, Yohan Mankata, a great angel for a short
- 9:11Speaker 1: period of time. He pretty much followed in Rendon's footsteps.
- 9:19Speaker 1: We're still not sure if he had the surgery on
- 9:21Speaker 1: his knee, are we, Mark? I can't remember what Francis
- 9:23Speaker 1: Romero's last tweeted about Yohan and how many teams are
- 9:27Speaker 1: interested in him, but we saw the last of him,
- 9:30Speaker 1: I believe it was mid-May, early June, I forget the
- 9:33Speaker 1: exact date, but Clearly not a good fit. Granted, it
- 9:37Speaker 1: only cost the Angels $ 4 million this year, but that
- 9:39Speaker 1: was $ 4 million not well spent when you could have
- 9:43Speaker 1: had that position and even more at-bats carved out for
- 9:47Speaker 1: whether it's Denzer Guzman or somebody else, whether it's Christian
- 9:52Speaker 1: Moore coming up and playing some third base, whatever it was,
- 9:55Speaker 1: you had options that would have been a lot cheaper considered.
- 10:00Speaker 1: that you weren't expecting to contend this year than just,
- 10:04Speaker 1: you know, basically waste $ 4 million on that guy. I agree.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Tough one. All right, well, before we launch into our
- 10:13Speaker 1: main topic, we might as well break for a quick commercial,
- 10:15Speaker 1: and we'll be right back with five guys who we
- 10:18Speaker 1: don't think will be back on Halo territory.
- 10:22Speaker 3: AJ, in this postseason, there is a chance for a
- 10:26Speaker 3: fan base to get very excited to witness either their
- 10:29Speaker 3: first ever World Series title or a World Series title
- 10:32Speaker 3: that hasn't been in a long time. So if you're
- 10:35Speaker 3: a fan out there and you're going, And some things
- 10:38Speaker 3: never change. No, in baseball, it can turn around. But
- 10:41Speaker 3: here's what really doesn't change. Mint Mobile, 15 bucks a
- 10:45Speaker 3: month on your wireless bill. It's been there since we
- 10:49Speaker 3: started talking about Mint Mobile and it will continue.
- 10:52Speaker 4: It's still there. And like you said, Scott, it's never
- 10:54Speaker 4: going to change. The coverage is great. It's unlimited plans
- 10:57Speaker 4: for $ 15 a month. People complaining about how stuff is expensive.
- 11:01Speaker 4: Mint Mobile, still the same. $ 15, great coverage for a
- 11:05Speaker 4: great price.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Go to mintmobile.com slash territory. That's mintmobile.com slash territory for
- 11:12Speaker 3: $ 15 a month. $ 45 upfront payment required equivalent to $ 15
- 11:15Speaker 3: a month. New customers on first three-month plan only. Taxes
- 11:19Speaker 3: and fees extra. See Mint Mobile for details.
- 11:23Speaker 1: And welcome back to Halo Territory with Mike DiGiovanna, former
- 11:27Speaker 1: LA Times baseball writer and host of the show, and
- 11:29Speaker 1: Mark Trumbo, the former Angels slugger. and regular co-hosts. Well,
- 11:33Speaker 1: we did not determine a lead-off man. Mark, do you
- 11:35Speaker 1: want me to go ahead?
- 11:38Speaker 2: Yeah, you're a table setter.
- 11:40Speaker 1: All right. That's very correct. My first guy who I
- 11:45Speaker 1: don't think will or should be back, Josh Lowe, the outfielder. Now, Josh,
- 11:52Speaker 1: he made $ 2. 6 million this season, and he's in his
- 11:55Speaker 1: second year of arbitration, so that salary figure is going
- 11:59Speaker 1: to go up, if I had to guess, maybe into
- 12:03Speaker 1: the $ 4 million range to retain him. Now, this is
- 12:06Speaker 1: a guy who overall hit. 209 with a. 633 OPS
- 12:11Speaker 1: in 114 games, 12 homers, 11 doubles, 29 RBIs, 105 strikeouts,
- 12:18Speaker 1: and 25 walks. That's only in 343 plate appearances. That's
- 12:23Speaker 1: maybe the equivalent of a little more than half a
- 12:25Speaker 1: season for most regulars. Now, Josh Batts left-handed, you would think, oh,
- 12:30Speaker 1: maybe you want to bring him back as a platoon guy,
- 12:33Speaker 1: which might be better, but he only hit 215 with
- 12:36Speaker 1: a 674 OPS against right-handers, and while that was well
- 12:41Speaker 1: above his 176 average and 419 OPS against lefties, it's
- 12:47Speaker 1: still not the kind of numbers I would like to
- 12:49Speaker 1: see from maybe a platoon left-handed bat. Defensively, uh, His
- 12:56Speaker 1: arm is actually very good. His fan graphs, I mean,
- 13:00Speaker 1: baseball savant rates his arm value in the 95th percentile.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Very good arm strength and accuracy. But overall, fan graphs
- 13:09Speaker 1: only had him at minus one defensive run saved and
- 13:13Speaker 1: two outs above average. So not great. Most of his
- 13:17Speaker 1: offensive metrics, there's exit velocity, hard hit percentage, squared up percentage.
- 13:24Speaker 1: were down in the lower five, you know, fifth percentile.
- 13:28Speaker 1: He did have a nice little hot streak in June,
- 13:32Speaker 1: but this is a guy who next season, even though
- 13:36Speaker 1: he's only 29, he will be four years removed from
- 13:40Speaker 1: what really is considered his only decent season. That was
- 13:44Speaker 1: in 2023 when he hit 292 with an 835 OPS,
- 13:46Speaker 1: 20 homers and 83 RBIs for the Raiders. He had
- 13:54Speaker 1: a 0.1 war. So we've talked about this before. You
- 14:01Speaker 1: need to bring up the bottom, the floor, especially as
- 14:04Speaker 1: it pertains to war. In that kind of position, to me,
- 14:08Speaker 1: you need at least a 2.0 war guy. I just
- 14:12Speaker 1: don't think, to me, the Angels are going to be rebuilding.
- 14:16Speaker 1: They're not going to be contending next year. Why pay
- 14:18Speaker 1: a guy $ 4 million who's not going to be part
- 14:20Speaker 1: of the long-term plan?
- 14:23Speaker 2: I agree. The projection has them at 3.6, give or take.
- 14:27Speaker 2: So I'm not sure. It could get up to four,
- 14:31Speaker 2: I'm sure. Arbitration works. You come up with a number,
- 14:35Speaker 2: as in you and your agent, your team comes up
- 14:37Speaker 2: with a number, you hopefully settle. If not, you take
- 14:41Speaker 2: that number into battle. And it's one or the other.
- 14:45Speaker 2: And I did go through the process. And if we
- 14:47Speaker 2: get really thin on episodes, I'll take you through it.
- 14:51Speaker 2: But it is an interesting experience. Actually, that could make
- 14:53Speaker 2: for some good content. But so you have all the
- 14:57Speaker 2: advanced numbers. I'm going to use my eyes. Josh Lowe
- 15:02Speaker 2: really didn't look, didn't contribute this year. Not enough. He's
- 15:07Speaker 2: got a nice ability of steel bases that was highlighted, but.
- 15:12Speaker 2: The arm and the outfit was pretty good. His defense
- 15:15Speaker 2: was rated pretty well. I didn't see phenomenal jumps, phenomenal reads.
- 15:19Speaker 2: It looked far closer to average to me, and it
- 15:24Speaker 2: didn't really showcase his athleticism. And part of the thing
- 15:29Speaker 2: is I'm really not into guys that have had only
- 15:32Speaker 2: one good year. And the more that I've thought about this,
- 15:36Speaker 2: when you're hoping they round back into form. Now, if
- 15:39Speaker 2: a guy had multiple good years– and maybe a down one, then,
- 15:43Speaker 2: then I can see that. But if you've really only had,
- 15:45Speaker 2: you know, one hit wonder, then it's just constantly hoping
- 15:49Speaker 2: that you'll regain the form. And oftentimes the player has
- 15:53Speaker 2: no clue how he was able to do it. It
- 15:55Speaker 2: just kind of worked that year. And that's really, if
- 15:58Speaker 2: you're not able, and that's, I mean, this is not
- 16:02Speaker 2: him necessarily, but that's where the development comes into the
- 16:04Speaker 2: minor leagues, struggling and bouncing back and struggling and bouncing
- 16:07Speaker 2: back and doing it enough that you know that, you're capable.
- 16:11Speaker 2: So long story short, I think that for a team
- 16:14Speaker 2: where they are, they could give Nelson Rada a shot
- 16:17Speaker 2: just as easily as Josh Lowe. You're going to lose
- 16:19Speaker 2: a little bit of power, but, you know, cheaper and
- 16:22Speaker 2: more athletic.
- 16:23Speaker 1: Yeah. So Josh was on your list, I take it? Sure.
- 16:28Speaker 1: All right.
- 16:29Speaker 2: I told you, I'm going to, I'm ripping off your
- 16:31Speaker 2: list and then I got some wild cards.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Well, let's, let's start with the guy on top of
- 16:35Speaker 1: your list and then I'll riff off that.
- 16:39Speaker 2: As I just said, I have somewhat of a hodgepodge list. Okay,
- 16:43Speaker 2: Jose Siri, there's a name for you. Oh, yeah, there
- 16:46Speaker 2: you go. Projected at 2.3 million. I don't have the
- 16:48Speaker 2: advanced stats in front of me. I do have my
- 16:50Speaker 2: memory of his lackadaisical, goofy play. To some, very entertaining.
- 16:57Speaker 2: To me, not so much.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Oh, man.
- 16:59Speaker 2: He's 31 years old and just doesn't fit the mold
- 17:05Speaker 2: of a hard-nosed grinder team at all. Um, I don't
- 17:10Speaker 2: think that he's a great fit for my John Moselak team. If, um,
- 17:15Speaker 2: John Moselak is at the helm still and he's, you know,
- 17:20Speaker 2: starting to become kind of expensive. None of these guys
- 17:22Speaker 2: are that expensive. So it's not like it's a big deal,
- 17:26Speaker 2: but to try and make this narrative work, you know,
- 17:29Speaker 2: he is more expensive than some others. So I'm going
- 17:31Speaker 2: to move on from Jose Siri. What about you?
- 17:34Speaker 1: Well, I have Jose Siria as the number two guy
- 17:37Speaker 1: on my list, and I do have some numbers that
- 17:39Speaker 1: might surprise you. This is so weird. He's literally in
- 17:43Speaker 1: the 99th percentile, and you mentioned this on a previous show,
- 17:46Speaker 1: in sprint speed. Yet, he only stole nine bases. His
- 17:51Speaker 1: defensive ratings from Fangraphs, minus two defensive run saves, saved
- 17:57Speaker 1: minus four outs above average. So it's like that speed
- 18:01Speaker 1: does not appear to be... getting put to great use defensively,
- 18:06Speaker 1: and we have seen him take some, shall we say,
- 18:09Speaker 1: circuitous routes to the baseball, although circus-like might be a
- 18:14Speaker 1: better adjective at times. He does have a pretty good arm,
- 18:18Speaker 1: 86th percentile in arm value, but he was in the
- 18:22Speaker 1: 17th percentile in range, so I don't know what that
- 18:26Speaker 1: tells you for a defensive profile, but it doesn't seem
- 18:30Speaker 1: to add up for a guy with that. And he
- 18:32Speaker 1: is athletic.
- 18:33Speaker 2: I agree.
- 18:33Speaker 1: He has some athleticism. He has made some great plays,
- 18:36Speaker 1: has great speed, but it's just not computing in the outfield. Now, offensively,
- 18:41Speaker 1: he had 241 with a 712 OPS at 108 games,
- 18:42Speaker 1: 10 homers, 10 stolen bases, 33 RBIs, 80 strikeouts, and
- 18:44Speaker 1: 251 plate appearances. Do the math. That does.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Now, he's not a regular, everyday player, but if he
- 18:58Speaker 1: were to even get double that plate appearances, his strikeouts
- 19:02Speaker 1: would be way too huge for me. And not much
- 19:05Speaker 1: difference in the Splatoon splits. 252, 687 against righties. 230,
- 19:11Speaker 1: 738 OPS against lefties. Just not doing it for me,
- 19:15Speaker 1: and I agree. Like, none of these guys are that expensive. But,
- 19:20Speaker 1: it's like, if this guy, if you're the Angels, you're
- 19:23Speaker 1: going into next year as... you know, the sort of
- 19:27Speaker 1: the foundation of whatever rebuilding process you're going through. You've
- 19:31Speaker 1: got to identify players who fit the profile, who fit
- 19:35Speaker 1: the mental and physical profile of what you're looking to
- 19:39Speaker 1: build your team around. To me, this guy just doesn't fit.
- 19:44Speaker 2: If he was eight years younger, I'd be more into him.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I agree. All right. so we have two
- 19:50Speaker 1: down three to go my number three and this might
- 19:54Speaker 1: surprise you a little Oswald Peraza the utility infielder we
- 19:59Speaker 1: were very high on this kid and he is still
- 20:01Speaker 1: a kid I think he's 25 or six years old
- 20:04Speaker 1: really liked him in the first half with good reasons
- 20:07Speaker 1: through 70 games uh Through June 19th, he was hitting.
- 20:12Speaker 1: 267 with a. 743 OPS, seven homers, 21 RBIs, 11 doubles,
- 20:20Speaker 1: 62 strikeouts, nine walks. So still a little high on
- 20:22Speaker 1: the whiffs. But from June 21st on, in 53 games,.
- 20:27Speaker 1: 150 average,. 384 OPS, zero homers, four RBIs, one double,
- 20:36Speaker 1: 49 strikeouts, eight walks. and really in almost every batting
- 20:41Speaker 1: offensive category for a baseball savant. He rated very poorly.
- 20:50Speaker 1: To me, you would think, you know, defensively, he is
- 20:54Speaker 1: a better defender. He does play a nice shortstop. You
- 20:57Speaker 1: need somebody who can play short. But to me, the Angels,
- 21:01Speaker 1: if you're going to keep Von Grissom, and Von Grissom
- 21:03Speaker 1: is not on my list of guys who I think
- 21:05Speaker 1: should go, You need a left-handed utility guy or a
- 21:08Speaker 1: switch-hitting utility guy who can play short or another left-handed
- 21:13Speaker 1: infielder who you can still move Guzman to short if
- 21:18Speaker 1: Neto needs a day or if he gets banged up
- 21:22Speaker 1: a little bit and play Grissom at third. And I
- 21:24Speaker 1: don't know if Adam Frazier is that guy. I don't
- 21:27Speaker 1: really have him on my list either. But maybe you
- 21:30Speaker 1: ride with Adam Frazier one more year. But Peraza, to me,
- 21:34Speaker 1: was just a pretty big disappointment in that second half.
- 21:38Speaker 2: All right. I'm going to say I– well, maybe because
- 21:44Speaker 2: I have a soft spot. I'm not giving up on
- 21:46Speaker 2: that defense. I can't do it. And the hit in,
- 21:50Speaker 2: it's still– he had it, and then he didn't. But
- 21:53Speaker 2: I know he made some mechanical changes, and I feel
- 21:56Speaker 2: like it is on the player, but there was so–
- 22:00Speaker 2: many guys that needed so much help last year that
- 22:03Speaker 2: I think he probably kind of fell by the wayside
- 22:06Speaker 2: in terms of, and it seemed like a lot of
- 22:10Speaker 2: the improvements he made probably came in spring training, uh,
- 22:13Speaker 2: which it's not ideal time-wise, but I liked the ball player.
- 22:17Speaker 2: I saw some tremendous defense. Um, what'd you say he costs?
- 22:21Speaker 2: I don't care what he costs. Bring him back.
- 22:24Speaker 1: He made a 1 million this year.
- 22:26Speaker 2: Uh, it's cheap. You can't give up. What do you
- 22:29Speaker 2: think it? Come on, man.
- 22:31Speaker 1: I just think you can upgrade. Like I said, I
- 22:35Speaker 1: like him. I like the defense. I like the overall player,
- 22:38Speaker 1: and I think there's more there. I just think if
- 22:41Speaker 1: you're going to get better.
- 22:42Speaker 2: You said you would like to see Vaughn Grissom at
- 22:44Speaker 2: third base. I did hear that.
- 22:47Speaker 1: I'm not saying I'd like to see him anywhere in
- 22:49Speaker 1: the infield. I just think his bat and with the
- 22:52Speaker 1: need for offense being so acute with this team, he's
- 22:56Speaker 1: a much better offensive player than Peraza is at this point.
- 22:59Speaker 1: So maybe you sacrificed some of the glove for that bat.
- 23:04Speaker 1: Just what I feel. All right. Fair enough.
- 23:07Speaker 2: All right.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Your turn, Mark.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Adam Frazier.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Okay. 34 years old, I believe.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Yeah, he's on the older side. I think maybe this
- 23:21Speaker 2: is just more of a courtesy to him. He'll play
- 23:23Speaker 2: somewhere where you get the opportunity to experience a better
- 23:28Speaker 2: chance at the post season. Um, he's at the age where,
- 23:32Speaker 2: you know, he's, he's very athletic guy. I mean, he
- 23:34Speaker 2: could hang on for, um, a few more years, but
- 23:38Speaker 2: it could also be towards the end for him. I,
- 23:41Speaker 2: I'm not obsessed at all with the platoon, right, left, right, left.
- 23:45Speaker 2: I mean, we saw that this year he has left-handed,
- 23:47Speaker 2: he does hit left-handed, but I don't know, man, if
- 23:50Speaker 2: that's the only reason that you're keeping a guy around, um,
- 23:54Speaker 2: I wasn't that impressed with the defense, um, I think
- 23:58Speaker 2: that really, I mean, his offensive numbers, and I believe
- 24:01Speaker 2: they are right in front of you. I don't actually
- 24:03Speaker 2: have them in front of me, but I thought he
- 24:05Speaker 2: had a little more. I thought they were pretty poor.
- 24:10Speaker 2: And if I'm wrong, then so be it. I do
- 24:12Speaker 2: know one thing that really got away from him this
- 24:14Speaker 2: year was his strength in the past, which was his
- 24:17Speaker 2: ability to make contact, more of a contact approach. He
- 24:20Speaker 2: struck out a ton for a guy that you don't,
- 24:24Speaker 2: pencil in as being a high strikeout guy. And for
- 24:26Speaker 2: some reason this year, uh, that number really ballooned on him. Um,
- 24:31Speaker 2: his arm is I think below average, especially in the outfield.
- 24:35Speaker 2: So he's really, to me, you know, a middle infielder,
- 24:38Speaker 2: second base only could DH a little bit, but I
- 24:41Speaker 2: think that, um, maybe a certain center fielder last year
- 24:45Speaker 2: is going to be DH and a lot moving forward. So, yeah,
- 24:47Speaker 2: I think Adam Frazier's, uh, you know, uh, mutual, uh,
- 24:51Speaker 2: parting of ways him and the, uh, the ball club.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, he was number six on my list
- 24:57Speaker 1: of fives, so he was right on the bubble. I
- 24:59Speaker 1: was a little disappointed. I mean, he was hurt for
- 25:02Speaker 1: a time, and then when they brought Chris Moore up,
- 25:05Speaker 1: they seemed like they were committed to playing him a
- 25:07Speaker 1: lot more. So he didn't really get that much opportunity.
- 25:12Speaker 1: I've seen him play in the past, and I know
- 25:13Speaker 1: there's a better player in there than what we saw,
- 25:16Speaker 1: but certainly at 34 years old, and once again, when
- 25:19Speaker 1: you're looking at the kind of team you're trying to
- 25:21Speaker 1: develop here, He's not going to be part of your
- 25:24Speaker 1: long-term future, so why even bother bringing him back at
- 25:27Speaker 1: this point? All right, number four guy on my list
- 25:31Speaker 1: is a backup catcher named Travis Darnot. He's 37. He
- 25:35Speaker 1: hasn't really announced his retirement. I don't know. I thought
- 25:40Speaker 1: defensively there's still something there. I've always liked him as
- 25:43Speaker 1: a defensive player. He does seem to work well with pitchers. Now,
- 25:47Speaker 1: he was on the second year of a two-year, $ 12
- 25:50Speaker 1: million deal, I believe, so he's making $ 6 million, which
- 25:53Speaker 1: is way too much to be paying a catcher of
- 25:56Speaker 1: his stature at this point in his career. Now, if
- 25:59Speaker 1: he did want to come back, he'd probably be willing
- 26:01Speaker 1: to do for something in the $ 1 million to $ 2
- 26:04Speaker 1: million range, so it could be cheap. But to me,
- 26:06Speaker 1: unless you really can't find another backup catcher, I mean,
- 26:09Speaker 1: at this point, I'd go with Heinemann, who at least
- 26:13Speaker 1: bats left-handed. over a guy like Darneau. I just don't
- 26:16Speaker 1: think there's a space spot for him next year. Respect
- 26:20Speaker 1: for him as a player. He had a hell of
- 26:22Speaker 1: a career, really. But I just don't see any way
- 26:27Speaker 1: he's going to be back. Any, any thoughts on him, Mark?
- 26:31Speaker 1: It's time. It's time.
- 26:33Speaker 2: The bats really, it's just not there anymore. And I,
- 26:37Speaker 2: I much preferred Heinemann's defense over Darneau's. Heinemann's very athletic
- 26:42Speaker 2: for his age.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:43Speaker 2: Well, I don't know. You were watching, too. He bounces
- 26:47Speaker 2: around like a young guy behind the plate. He has
- 26:50Speaker 2: a lot of energy. He seems to really take command.
- 26:54Speaker 2: And Darnot does a nice job of that, too. I
- 26:56Speaker 2: just saw a little more out of Heinemann. And Heinemann,
- 26:59Speaker 2: you know, he has a left-handed stick. He bunts. He
- 27:02Speaker 2: does kind of these things that they really need. The
- 27:04Speaker 2: overall offensive appeal is, well, you know.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Yeah i mean you don't expect a lot from your
- 27:12Speaker 1: backup catcher i.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Don't know it reminds me of jeff mathis i think.
- 27:17Speaker 1: Yeah well jeff was great defensively an.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Excellent defender and heineken excellent defender and i think the
- 27:22Speaker 2: ball club got a lot better when he came in
- 27:25Speaker 2: and maybe you know another guy went out but uh
- 27:28Speaker 2: the catcher position it was obvious everyone knows who we're
- 27:31Speaker 2: talking about but Yeah. With Darnot, you know, credit to
- 27:35Speaker 2: Wasserman or whatever they're going by now for negotiating that deal.
- 27:39Speaker 1: That's a great deal.
- 27:42Speaker 2: He was an ex-Brave and those, those ex-Braves, you know,
- 27:46Speaker 2: they found their way here a lot.
- 27:49Speaker 1: He was on their, wasn't he on their World Series
- 27:51Speaker 1: team in 22? Yeah. Also on the Ray's World Series team.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Yeah. 2020.
- 27:56Speaker 1: So, yeah, I mean.
- 27:58Speaker 2: Darnot's had an excellent career. He really has.
- 28:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:01Speaker 2: He's, Well, well liked by all of his teammates. A
- 28:06Speaker 2: really good clubhouse guy. I think a natural fit to
- 28:08Speaker 2: maybe go into coaching when the jersey comes off. So
- 28:14Speaker 2: I just don't think the Angels probably make sense.
- 28:17Speaker 1: Agreed. And who's next or is it last? Are we
- 28:19Speaker 1: at the last point with your list?
- 28:23Speaker 2: I guess I have one more name projected at 1.1 million.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Ben Joyce.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Oh, interesting. Interesting. So you're talking about a non-tender here.
- 28:33Speaker 1: You think, what would he make in arbitration next year,
- 28:35Speaker 1: you think? Was that the 1.1?
- 28:39Speaker 2: 1.1 million.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Wow. You're ready to give up on that million-dollar bill.
- 28:45Speaker 2: No, but it's a talking point. Well, what are the
- 28:50Speaker 2: reasons you might? I mean, the injury history is just,
- 28:55Speaker 2: I mean, you can't. I don't know if you can
- 28:58Speaker 2: count on this guy and this could probably be a
- 28:59Speaker 2: whole topic in itself. I think that while the bobblehead
- 29:04Speaker 2: and the 106 mile an hour heater and all of
- 29:07Speaker 2: that is, I don't want a sideshow. I want a
- 29:12Speaker 2: dependable high leverage arm. Maybe asking a lot, but I mean,
- 29:18Speaker 2: you see what this guy is capable of doing and
- 29:21Speaker 2: it's so appealing and yet he misses so much time.
- 29:26Speaker 2: At the end there, we were speculating he didn't look right.
- 29:30Speaker 2: He didn't look close to right. I don't know if
- 29:33Speaker 2: we ever really got a total explanation other than he
- 29:36Speaker 2: did hit the shelf again. Um, I think this winter
- 29:39Speaker 2: is going to be absolutely pivotal, uh, for him to
- 29:43Speaker 2: try and figure some things out, figure out what he
- 29:45Speaker 2: needs to do to get his body. Um, and it's
- 29:49Speaker 2: not a physical thing. I mean, the guy's a monster.
- 29:52Speaker 2: He looks like he's got, uh, you know, uh, looks
- 29:55Speaker 2: like Adonis carved out of stone, but, um, when it's
- 29:59Speaker 2: not translating to health, the best kind of ability is availability.
- 30:03Speaker 2: That was written on the Diamondbacks wall. Well, I mean,
- 30:08Speaker 2: does he fit that mold? Not even close.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Not even close.
- 30:12Speaker 2: Can he hog a roster spot when he has to
- 30:16Speaker 2: be down multiple days, if that's something that's going to continue?
- 30:19Speaker 2: I don't think that that is fair to the other
- 30:22Speaker 2: players either. I think that you need to be able
- 30:25Speaker 2: more often than not, and he wasn't able to. So
- 30:27Speaker 2: for the sake of this, I mean, he's He's cheap,
- 30:30Speaker 2: dirt cheap, so almost certainly will be back, but there
- 30:35Speaker 2: is a slight argument for the opposite.
- 30:37Speaker 1: I like it. Definitely provocative. I would not be ready
- 30:42Speaker 1: to give up on Ben Joyce's arm just yet, and
- 30:45Speaker 1: I don't know if this is contributing to his injury
- 30:48Speaker 1: issues in any way, but it seems like he has
- 30:51Speaker 1: this label of being the closer. Why? Because he throws 104, whatever, 103.
- 30:57Speaker 1: He's got the stuff to be a closer. That's not
- 30:59Speaker 1: that's clear but when you attach that label to a
- 31:03Speaker 1: guy you attach certain expectation and pressure i would love
- 31:07Speaker 1: to see ben joyce get knocked back to a seventh
- 31:09Speaker 1: inning guy if that's what you want to call him
- 31:12Speaker 1: just a regular setup guy you know if you can
- 31:15Speaker 1: somehow sign a guy who can close for you and
- 31:18Speaker 1: maybe another eighth inning arm who you trust just take
- 31:21Speaker 1: that label off them completely maybe that'll help them work
- 31:25Speaker 1: at a certain pace that won't uh Expose him to
- 31:28Speaker 1: injury as much? I don't know. But there's just something's
- 31:33Speaker 1: not adding up with this guy. There's a disconnect between,
- 31:37Speaker 1: like you say, his physical stature, his body, the tools,
- 31:42Speaker 1: the velocity, and he just has not been able to
- 31:44Speaker 1: put together a healthy year in a long time. So
- 31:47Speaker 1: whatever you can do to promote.
- 31:48Speaker 2: Can you explain to me what the sprinkler is, his
- 31:51Speaker 2: off-speed pitch?
- 31:52Speaker 1: Oh, it's called the splinker. This would be the sprinkler, Mark. Oh, great.
- 32:01Speaker 1: I've never heard another guy that throws such a pitch.
- 32:04Speaker 1: There might be one or two. It's a combination of
- 32:07Speaker 1: a splitter and a sinker that acts like a changeup.
- 32:10Speaker 2: I don't know what it means.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Exactly. It's a cool name. It's a cool name. But
- 32:15Speaker 1: once again, what good is it if it's on the
- 32:17Speaker 1: shelf along with that fastball? The last guy on my list,
- 32:23Speaker 1: Angel fans may not remember this guy, but he's a
- 32:25Speaker 1: right-hander by the name of Robert Stevenson now. You may
- 32:28Speaker 1: be thinking I'm nuts. Well, of course he's not going
- 32:30Speaker 1: to be back, but he has an interesting clause in
- 32:33Speaker 1: his contract. He signed for three years and 33 million.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Remember three years ago, I think he's pitching what 10
- 32:39Speaker 1: games in the whole three years. He's been hurt to
- 32:42Speaker 1: try to hedge against the injuries because they knew he
- 32:46Speaker 1: had elbow issues coming in. They added a fourth year,
- 32:50Speaker 1: two and a half million dollar team option. If, Stevenson
- 32:55Speaker 1: spends 130 consecutive days on the injured list because of
- 32:59Speaker 1: an elbow injury. He has fit, he has achieved that
- 33:04Speaker 1: contract clause, so the Angels could bring him back for
- 33:08Speaker 1: $ 2. 5 million if they want. Now, if Robert Stevenson somehow
- 33:14Speaker 1: convinces them over the winter, hey, I'm feeling great, my
- 33:17Speaker 1: arm's great, I threw six bullpens, my velo's great, would
- 33:22Speaker 1: you bring him back at $ 2. 5 million? I mean, I
- 33:26Speaker 1: don't know. I wouldn't personally because I just think much
- 33:28Speaker 1: like your reasoning with Ben Joyce, I wouldn't commit a
- 33:33Speaker 1: roster spot to this guy. And it's still $ 2.
- 33:35Speaker 2: 5 million.
- 33:37Speaker 1: You don't want the, what if there's a new salary cap?
- 33:39Speaker 1: And if you add his $ 2. 5 to maybe some of
- 33:43Speaker 1: these other $ 4, $ 4, $ 3, $ 4, $ 5 million contracts add
- 33:47Speaker 1: up to preventing you from signing maybe a guy with
- 33:50Speaker 1: a bigger name and profile. I don't know. I just
- 33:53Speaker 1: can't see the Angels doing it. But there is that
- 33:56Speaker 1: little window that's open for a guy like Stevenson to
- 33:58Speaker 1: come back.
- 34:00Speaker 2: His contract wasn't put together by anyone that's running the
- 34:05Speaker 2: show now. That is correct. I think it would be
- 34:07Speaker 2: far more attractive if you were the one that signed
- 34:10Speaker 2: him and you were trying to not have this go
- 34:15Speaker 2: down on your resume.
- 34:17Speaker 1: Yeah, salvage anything.
- 34:21Speaker 2: You can. 2.5, I mean, league minimum is what the
- 34:24Speaker 2: writing should have been.
- 34:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:26Speaker 2: So it should have been so attractive that you you
- 34:29Speaker 2: literally can't turn it down. I don't know why. Two
- 34:32Speaker 2: point five in the grand scheme of things. You know,
- 34:36Speaker 2: it's not a ton just gets passed off to the
- 34:38Speaker 2: fans anyway. So who cares?
- 34:41Speaker 1: There you go.
- 34:43Speaker 2: But I don't I personally, you know, if I'm going
- 34:47Speaker 2: to make somewhat of the argument for Ben Joyce, I
- 34:50Speaker 2: can't logically say that Stevenson makes sense. All right. Before
- 34:55Speaker 2: we go, I got four names in front of me
- 34:58Speaker 2: that are free agents. And you tell me if they
- 35:02Speaker 2: might be back or will not be back. Rysel Iglesias.
- 35:06Speaker 2: These are all former Halos, by the way. Might be
- 35:09Speaker 2: back with the Braves. No, he's a free agent. These
- 35:13Speaker 2: are free agents.
- 35:15Speaker 1: Oh, you were saying you want him to come back
- 35:16Speaker 1: to the Angels maybe?
- 35:18Speaker 2: I'm asking you if you would consider bringing them back.
- 35:21Speaker 2: I mean, they need– I have Iglesias.
- 35:25Speaker 1: Yeah. He's shown some pretty good stuff. I mean, 37,
- 35:29Speaker 1: we've seen Kenley Jansen at that age perform pretty well.
- 35:34Speaker 1: If you were just looking for a one-year closer and
- 35:36Speaker 1: you could get him at what you might consider a
- 35:39Speaker 1: bargain rate for that position, yeah, I think Bryce Hill's
- 35:42Speaker 1: still got something left.
- 35:44Speaker 2: I think he's nasty. I don't know if this makes
- 35:47Speaker 2: sense or not. Taylor Ward, 33-year-old outfielder. You're familiar with him.
- 35:51Speaker 1: I am familiar with him. I love him personally. Great dude.
- 35:53Speaker 1: Would not want him back. That last year, wow. I mean,
- 35:58Speaker 1: what did he hit? How many homers did he hit
- 35:59Speaker 1: the year before? Was it 30-something to go from that? Yeah,
- 36:04Speaker 1: it's like single digits. I know Baltimore is not the
- 36:07Speaker 1: greatest park for right-handed hitters right now, but that has
- 36:11Speaker 1: fallen off a cliff. And to me defensively, it's just, no,
- 36:15Speaker 1: that's a hard no for me.
- 36:17Speaker 2: Okay. He's also probably going to command. Oh, that's interesting.
- 36:20Speaker 2: You know, it's very bad time to, you know, if
- 36:24Speaker 2: you're going to try and time being a free agent,
- 36:26Speaker 2: that's not a great one. So we'll, we'll see what
- 36:28Speaker 2: he's able to come away with. Carlos Estevez is on
- 36:30Speaker 2: the list.
- 36:30Speaker 1: He has shoulder injury. We're going to move on. That's
- 36:33Speaker 1: a pass.
- 36:34Speaker 2: Then Patrick Sandoval actually is a free agent at 30
- 36:38Speaker 2: years old. And I think that one's a little more
- 36:40Speaker 2: interesting because, Now they're stocked with pitching, but I don't know,
- 36:45Speaker 2: left-handed pitching, very desirable. The guy that grew up around here,
- 36:51Speaker 2: you know, I think, well, he missed a lot of
- 36:53Speaker 2: time this year and he is making nine something million.
- 36:56Speaker 2: But when you're a free agent, you get what you get.
- 36:57Speaker 2: It's not based on arbitration numbers. Sometimes your arbitration number
- 37:03Speaker 2: can be higher than your free agent salary. Usually it's
- 37:06Speaker 2: not the case, but it can be. And that's part
- 37:09Speaker 2: of why the arbitration system Once you're in it, it
- 37:11Speaker 2: generally will take care of the player if they don't
- 37:14Speaker 2: miss too much time on the field. It is somewhat
- 37:17Speaker 2: pro-player in that regard. There's actually quite a few ex-Halos
- 37:23Speaker 2: that I left out, but it could be worth looking at.
- 37:27Speaker 1: I like Sandoval personally. I think he's a bulldog. His temper,
- 37:30Speaker 1: as we know, has gotten the best of him out
- 37:32Speaker 1: there on the mound. Did you see any of his
- 37:33Speaker 1: starts when he came back from the injury? Yeah, I
- 37:36Speaker 1: thought he looked okay. Yeah, I thought he looked okay, too.
- 37:39Speaker 1: I just don't know that I would commit, you know,
- 37:41Speaker 1: whatever it's going to– if it's going to cost you
- 37:43Speaker 1: $ 10 million even for a one-year deal, I'd rather let–
- 37:46Speaker 1: I'd rather roll with one of your young starters and
- 37:49Speaker 1: spend that money elsewhere. Well, Kikuchi takes good space, so. Yeah,
- 37:52Speaker 1: I mean, if you could trade Kikuchi, maybe– Maybe that
- 37:55Speaker 1: opens up a spot for a guy like Sandoval, but
- 37:58Speaker 1: the way the roster is currently constructed, I would have
- 38:00Speaker 1: to pass on that right now too.
- 38:03Speaker 4: All right.
- 38:03Speaker 2: Well, figured I'd ask.
- 38:06Speaker 1: I appreciate that. I like that. All right. That's going
