- 0:59welcome to lunch with the clydesdale we
- 1:01have a special guest today special show
- 1:05bailey maraviglia is with us thank you so
- 1:07much for joining us bailey thank you so
- 1:10much for having me so i i became
- 1:15acutely aware of you watching american
- 1:18gladiator this year
- 1:20And they showed your profile.
- 1:23And I was like, oh my gosh,
- 1:26I know her.
- 1:28I've watched her.
- 1:29Why do I know her?
- 1:31And then it took research into my own
- 1:34cobwebbed brain to figure out.
- 1:37And then they showed you competing at
- 1:40Syndicate.
- 1:41And I was like, there we go.
- 1:43Now the clues are starting to come in.
- 1:46And I've covered every year of the
- 1:47Syndicate.
- 1:48Oh, wow.
- 1:49Yeah,
- 1:49that's actually how they found me for the
- 1:51show.
- 1:53One of the casting directors was watching
- 1:58on YouTube and was like,
- 2:00um i don't know how they like they
- 2:02do their casting reach but like he was
- 2:05watching it and was like we think you
- 2:06would be a great fit um i saw
- 2:08you competing in knoxville and i was like
- 2:11oh there we go so yeah they like
- 2:14like basically whatever footage i got from
- 2:16that they recycled it i was like isn't
- 2:17that funny i came full circle like they
- 2:19just watched me at at syndicate and then
- 2:22they're like you we think you'd be on
- 2:23a you'd be great for this tv show
- 2:27So I had to research everything to figure
- 2:29out how exactly I knew who you were.
- 2:32And then at that point I was like,
- 2:33man,
- 2:34I have enough stuff here that I should
- 2:36have her on as a guest.
- 2:39Because she has a very interesting past.
- 2:41And then as I was kind of following
- 2:43along,
- 2:44I saw you did a xenon.
- 2:46I saw it like you were competing in
- 2:48the game season.
- 2:50All of these things is like,
- 2:51it just keeps piling up.
- 2:53And I was like, she would be awesome.
- 2:55And I,
- 2:56I used to do so many interviews and
- 2:58I've kind of taken a break from it,
- 3:00but like,
- 3:01you're really kind of my first one back.
- 3:04That's exciting.
- 3:05It's funny because I remember watching a
- 3:08lot of your interviews and I have a
- 3:09friend who's like very obsessed with your
- 3:11show.
- 3:12So like, I feel like it's,
- 3:13it was like one of those like six
- 3:14degrees of like knowing you guys and
- 3:17everything.
- 3:17So when you said like,
- 3:18do you want to be on the show?
- 3:19I was like, absolutely.
- 3:20I want to be on the show.
- 3:21Like, this would be so cool.
- 3:23I just want to know though, who's,
- 3:24who is the Clydesdale and who's the
- 3:25cowboy?
- 3:27Clydesdale.
- 3:27Okay.
- 3:28Yeah.
- 3:30And he's not really a cowboy.
- 3:32By process of elimination, no, not at all.
- 3:35But he's from Louisiana with a weird
- 3:38accent.
- 3:39And Siobhan kept calling him the cowboy
- 3:43because you could just picture him tying
- 3:45up his horse out front.
- 3:46He thinks I should have a cowboy hat.
- 3:48He thinks I have a horse tied up
- 3:50outside.
- 3:50I'm at my office at work right now.
- 3:52I definitely do not have a horse.
- 3:54i don't i don't think of cowboys when
- 3:56i think of louisiana is that like none
- 4:00of us do either but here's the thing
- 4:03here's the thing sebi doesn't leave his
- 4:04house so he also has no idea where
- 4:07cowboys actually live and he just kind of
- 4:10figured he kind of pointed that pointed me
- 4:11in that direction so it's it's pretty
- 4:14precious like you're from the south you
- 4:15must be a cowboy
- 4:16Clearly it was a nice alliteration.
- 4:18It goes with the show and yeah.
- 4:22Yeah.
- 4:23I can see that.
- 4:23I can see that.
- 4:24That's funny though.
- 4:24I mean, you know, if it sticks,
- 4:26it sticks.
- 4:27Yeah.
- 4:28So we're kind of known for going off
- 4:30the rails.
- 4:30We don't really have a format to the
- 4:32show.
- 4:32We just kind of go wherever the wind
- 4:34takes us.
- 4:35And so I,
- 4:36I watch a lot of sports and I
- 4:38watch Rich Eisen and he does this thing
- 4:39at the beginning during a show called
- 4:41celebrity true or false.
- 4:43That's cool.
- 4:45And so what I'm going to do is
- 4:47things that I found out I figure are
- 4:50interesting to me.
- 4:51I'm going to ask you,
- 4:52are they true or false?
- 4:53I found them on the internet.
- 4:54Let's find out if they're real.
- 4:55Let's do it.
- 4:59So the first thing is, Bailey,
- 5:02are you a second degree black belt?
- 5:04And did you in fact teach karate classes
- 5:07early in your professional career?
- 5:09Yes, I am.
- 5:10And it's really funny that you say that
- 5:13because technically like I can be asked
- 5:15that,
- 5:15but I'm not technically allowed to be
- 5:17like,
- 5:18I'm a second degree black belt because I
- 5:20think at a certain point,
- 5:23from what I was told at a certain
- 5:25degree,
- 5:25you're technically a registered weapon.
- 5:28So like, you can't point it out.
- 5:30I don't know if that's true or not.
- 5:31That might be a truthful thing.
- 5:32But I don't go around saying it all
- 5:35that often.
- 5:35But I am Yes,
- 5:36I'm a second degree black belt.
- 5:37And I used to teach karate for a
- 5:39long time.
- 5:41My follow up question is,
- 5:42are you a registered weapon?
- 5:45feel like at this point in my life
- 5:46i i do feel like a registered weapon
- 5:48like you saw me on american i know
- 5:52this much you're toting around guns right
- 5:55now so if which weapon or not you
- 5:57definitely uh armed and armed and
- 5:59dangerous for certain i get a lot about
- 6:03that and i just go like this is
- 6:04just genetics like i have worked hard but
- 6:07it's just it's genetics too
- 6:11so when you get like a second degree
- 6:12black belt does it ever expire can they
- 6:15ever take it away from you i don't
- 6:18think it i don't think it will ever
- 6:19expire and i don't think they could take
- 6:22i don't think i can strip you of
- 6:24a rank um if that was the case
- 6:29there would be a lot of really old
- 6:30men out there who are not in the
- 6:32degrees like the martial arts world is
- 6:36Icky.
- 6:37So I would have to probably have done
- 6:39something really,
- 6:40really bad to get my rank strip.
- 6:41I don't think you can necessarily,
- 6:44I know that you can't you can't rank
- 6:47up unless there is somebody higher than
- 6:49you in your in your style.
- 6:54And like, sometimes like,
- 6:55because it takes like, let's just say,
- 6:57for example, in myself, karate,
- 6:59there's nine there's nine ranks of black
- 7:02belt.
- 7:03And so
- 7:03let's say you're an eighth degree black
- 7:05belt, you're probably pretty old.
- 7:07You have to find somebody who's a ninth
- 7:09degree black belt to promote you.
- 7:10And then a lot of those people just
- 7:11die.
- 7:12So you have to go around and be
- 7:17like,
- 7:18I have to train with or under someone
- 7:20who is of this rank in order for
- 7:22them to decide to promote me.
- 7:25And that gets really hard.
- 7:26So it's like,
- 7:28think about it as like a maybe like
- 7:30a season ticket holder like you kind of
- 7:32have to look but the opposite we're like
- 7:34you get the season ticket especially for
- 7:36like um around here like the Giants
- 7:39because if you have season tickets uh for
- 7:42like going to MetLife you're really you're
- 7:44probably really old because the wait list
- 7:46is so long so like somebody has to
- 7:48die for you to go in but this
- 7:49is the opposite where you're like someone
- 7:50needs to stay alive in order to be
- 7:52promoted
- 7:54So like there's one ninth degree black
- 7:56belt in the jungles of Taiwan and you
- 7:59have to go
- 8:00pretty much to get the okay we can
- 8:02make a movie out of that yeah it
- 8:06is like that it's very much like that
- 8:08so like some people will like just be
- 8:10stuck at a certain like rank and usually
- 8:12it will take like a year to get
- 8:14your year to get your first degree black
- 8:16belt two years to get your second degree
- 8:17black belt three years for your third and
- 8:19so it kind of follows like a structure
- 8:21like i know a lot of people think
- 8:22about it like is jiu jitsu like it
- 8:23takes a really long time to build up
- 8:25in the rank so like once you are
- 8:27past your color belts and you are in
- 8:29your black belt then
- 8:31you're pretty much sitting at your,
- 8:32whatever rank you are for a long,
- 8:34long time.
- 8:34And like,
- 8:35you don't actually end up being like a
- 8:37teacher until like,
- 8:41technically like I could teach karate,
- 8:43right?
- 8:43And like,
- 8:43I can host like classes of ranks that
- 8:45are under me, but I can't,
- 8:47host classes of like other black belts
- 8:49unless i was like a third degree black
- 8:51belt and then i could be like a
- 8:52teacher's teacher at a fourth degree black
- 8:54belt so there's like rules and regulations
- 8:56when surrounding that kind of stuff it's
- 8:58pretty fluid now it used to be a
- 8:59lot more strict but um yeah now i'm
- 9:02thinking about it it's like a weird it's
- 9:03a weird world martial arts really rip
- 9:05world do you still practice
- 9:07i don't no i don't and i i
- 9:09had thought about like going into jujitsu
- 9:11and i was like you know i'm like
- 9:13i just i just don't want to be
- 9:15like underneath like a person sweating on
- 9:17top of me for like five six minutes
- 9:20at a time like i really i really
- 9:22don't have the patience for all that
- 9:23especially like a toddler i'm like i
- 9:25constantly have someone touching me and
- 9:27i'm like i just don't need someone trying
- 9:29to physically hurt me and sweat on me
- 9:31that you know i don't need to go
- 9:32pay for things like that anymore
- 9:36It's useful to know, but I'm like,
- 9:38I'm just not into this right now.
- 9:40So check.
- 9:40Bailey doesn't pay for sweaty men anymore.
- 9:42I don't pay for men to come over
- 9:45and sweat on me and put me in
- 9:48a headlock.
- 9:48I don't need that.
- 9:49A lot of people do pay for that
- 9:51privilege.
- 9:52They do.
- 9:52They do.
- 9:54I have lots of friends who are in
- 9:55jiu-jitsu,
- 9:56and I remind them every day of just
- 9:57the decisions they make.
- 9:59Yeah.
- 10:00So my co-host on this on my Sunday
- 10:02night show is Carolyn Prevost.
- 10:04And she is a, she dabbles in Taekwondo.
- 10:07Actually, she was really,
- 10:08really good at one point.
- 10:09Um,
- 10:11her letting out of aggression is like
- 10:14beating up Bob, the dummy.
- 10:17Do you ever do anything like that just
- 10:19to like relieve stress?
- 10:22Um, I have a,
- 10:25I have a heavy bag in my garage,
- 10:27um, that I will occasionally use, but, um,
- 10:32I don't,
- 10:33I don't go like out of my way
- 10:35sometimes to use it.
- 10:35Sometimes like I'll,
- 10:36I'll start to like mess around with it
- 10:38and I'm like, Oh, this feels pretty good.
- 10:40But, um,
- 10:40it's interesting that she's got that going
- 10:42on with Taekwondo.
- 10:42Taekwondo is such a beautiful form of
- 10:45martial arts.
- 10:45Like
- 10:46We always used to make fun of that,
- 10:48but it's like really sexy and really
- 10:50finesse.
- 10:51So especially someone like with her
- 10:53background,
- 10:54isn't she like a hockey player?
- 10:55She is.
- 10:56Yeah,
- 10:57I feel like that's a really like Taekwondo
- 10:59is kind of like the ballet of the
- 11:00martial arts world.
- 11:01Like it's really like lots of flexibility,
- 11:04lots of like airtime.
- 11:07It's really that's really cool.
- 11:08If you go watch her videos on Instagram
- 11:11of her beating up Bob,
- 11:13there's nothing beautiful about it.
- 11:14It is one hundred percent aggression.
- 11:17Yeah, I'll go check that out.
- 11:18I really I'll connect with her because I'm
- 11:21friends with her fiance, wife, wife.
- 11:24Wife.
- 11:24Yeah.
- 11:25Yeah.
- 11:25So I was I'll check that out because
- 11:27I it's nice to like have those
- 11:28commonalities like when we're all like,
- 11:30oh,
- 11:30we're all crossfitters and stuff like
- 11:32that.
- 11:32And then you kind of get into like
- 11:35someone's past or like a hobby they picked
- 11:37up and you realize like, oh,
- 11:38I have more in common than just we
- 11:40throw around barbells.
- 11:41It's fun to figure out that CrossFitters
- 11:44do stuff besides CrossFit.
- 11:48It's kind of part of the methodology.
- 11:50Play other sports.
- 11:51That's true.
- 11:52Yes.
- 11:53I actually went back to a sport that
- 11:55I was...
- 11:56I don't want to take a true or
- 11:57false question away from you,
- 11:58but I went back to a sport that
- 12:00I was doing in high school because I
- 12:02had gotten the opportunity to coach at one
- 12:05of our local high schools.
- 12:06I used to pole vault
- 12:08And one of my coaches was saying that
- 12:12the high school that's here was looking
- 12:14for a pole vaulting coach.
- 12:15And I was like, oh man,
- 12:16it'd be so cool to get back into
- 12:18that.
- 12:18It's so fun.
- 12:20And I was like, but I'm so rusty.
- 12:21I would love to just get...
- 12:23involved again.
- 12:24And I started picking it back up for
- 12:26a couple months.
- 12:27And I was like, whoa, I'm, I'm,
- 12:29I'm thirty five years old.
- 12:31I'm pole vaulting with like sixteen,
- 12:33seventeen, eighteen year olds.
- 12:34Their bodies don't feel like my body.
- 12:36My body is toast.
- 12:38Like I'd be there for like two hours
- 12:40in this like pole vault gym and I
- 12:42would come home and I'd be like,
- 12:44there are muscles on my body that I
- 12:46did not even realize I had.
- 12:47They're so sore,
- 12:48like just so incredibly sore.
- 12:51Mark Phillips pole vaulting is so insane.
- 12:54It is.
- 12:55And like when you watch somebody who is
- 12:57so good at it and like,
- 13:00especially like if you're watching like
- 13:02people going for like state champs or
- 13:04world, not world records because it's,
- 13:07they're pretty hard to break at this
- 13:08point,
- 13:08but they're like teenagers who are in like
- 13:10college or obviously like the Olympics,
- 13:13like watching those guys and girls is
- 13:16incredible.
- 13:17Just so incredible.
- 13:19Pole vaulting is one of those things where
- 13:21people say, you know, people talk about,
- 13:22man, you know,
- 13:23professionals make it look so easy.
- 13:25The professionals did not make that look
- 13:26easy.
- 13:27That still looks incredibly difficult.
- 13:29It looks really hard, right?
- 13:30You're going to take off running with this
- 13:32long ass stick,
- 13:33jamming into the ground and use it to
- 13:35level yourself up over this bar.
- 13:37That's fourteen, fifteen,
- 13:38however many feet is in there.
- 13:39Oh, it's nothing about that looks easy.
- 13:42No, no.
- 13:42And it's happening so fast, too,
- 13:44that you're just like.
- 13:46You don't even realize how you got there
- 13:47at a certain point.
- 13:48It's like a snatch where you're like,
- 13:49all of a sudden you're under the bar
- 13:50and you're like, everything came together.
- 13:53Hopefully I don't mess this up.
- 13:55It's amazing the handful of games athletes
- 13:58that were pole vaulters.
- 14:00i know right i think like daniel brannon
- 14:02that's actually how her and i became
- 14:03friends we were sitting on a bus waiting
- 14:06uh to go up to i don't know
- 14:07like rich's woods one day and we just
- 14:10were sitting on the bus for a half
- 14:12hour talking about stuff and i we found
- 14:13out that we were both pole vaulters i
- 14:15was like you're a bull this is crazy
- 14:17and then um the the guy who won
- 14:19american gladiators was also a pole
- 14:21vaulter and i was like
- 14:23There we go.
- 14:23And you just have this certain thing in
- 14:26common with those people.
- 14:28It's a very niche thing.
- 14:29So when you see or meet another pole
- 14:32vaulter, you're like, yeah, yeah,
- 14:34you're crazy.
- 14:35I'm crazy.
- 14:35We're a little psycho.
- 14:36And I didn't even know what it was
- 14:37when I first got into high school.
- 14:40And my brother was like,
- 14:41you should try pole vaulting.
- 14:42I was like, sure.
- 14:43I have no idea what it was.
- 14:44And I just showed up at that area
- 14:47for practice.
- 14:48And I was like,
- 14:48we're going to go with it.
- 14:50We're going to try it out.
- 14:51And then
- 14:52Ended up trying it out.
- 14:54Absolutely loved it.
- 14:56Became MVP.
- 14:57Went on to like States and it was
- 15:00it was so cool.
- 15:01I mean,
- 15:01I just love and I could always probably
- 15:03go back.
- 15:03But, you know,
- 15:05like to the gym that's near me.
- 15:06But, oh, man,
- 15:07like talk about talk about just like body
- 15:10awareness and stuff.
- 15:10Like it's like when you're an adult and
- 15:12you're like,
- 15:12I want to do gymnastics and you're like,
- 15:15this is gonna be a great idea.
- 15:16But then you're like forty and you're
- 15:17like, this was a terrible idea.
- 15:22every year i tell myself i'm gonna teach
- 15:24myself how to do a back flip and
- 15:25then every year i'm like what if i
- 15:27land on my neck wait right i literally
- 15:31front flipped into my parents pool
- 15:33yesterday and i was like please don't
- 15:35break my neck yeah the pool the pool
- 15:38and like the trampoline park is the only
- 15:40place i let myself do it because i'm
- 15:41like i can land on this airbag or
- 15:43this this you know this foam pit not
- 15:45a big deal yeah flat ground
- 15:48I don't know.
- 15:51Right?
- 15:51I know.
- 15:52You only get to land on the mat
- 15:54if you get over the bar.
- 15:55I would definitely die before I learned to
- 15:57get over the bar.
- 15:58There have been a couple of times where
- 15:59like, there's a re-bend in your pole,
- 16:04right?
- 16:04So it's fiberglass.
- 16:06And they go off of your weight.
- 16:09So obviously like there's length and then
- 16:11there's your weight.
- 16:14So technically you should be on a pole
- 16:16that's at your weight.
- 16:17Like you need to be like if I'm
- 16:19one forty five,
- 16:20I need to be on a one forty
- 16:21five pole technically to like compete.
- 16:24But like I will train on like a
- 16:26one twenty pole because it will give me
- 16:28more rebound.
- 16:30um there was a time where it must
- 16:32have been like a one i mean and
- 16:34this was back in high school so i
- 16:35was much lighter but i was on a
- 16:36much lighter pole and i i don't know
- 16:40what happened i must have stuck it and
- 16:42just like missed time my jump it re-bent
- 16:45or it re-bent so much that the recoil
- 16:49just happened in the ground and it
- 16:52slap me all the way from my elbow,
- 16:54all the way down to my hip.
- 16:56And I have never had a bruise that
- 16:58big in my life.
- 16:59Like I didn't even get off the ground.
- 17:00It just basically rubber banded me and
- 17:04gave me the worst whip of my life.
- 17:05And I've also seen people who have stuck
- 17:09it's a, it's called like a,
- 17:10there's a box, right?
- 17:11So they've stuck the pole into the box.
- 17:13They went to go bend the bar and
- 17:15then it just snapped right in half.
- 17:17And yeah,
- 17:18they just backflip right on like,
- 17:21tech usually it's like um like mats like
- 17:24for the like a gym like a regular
- 17:25cool mat kind of um but sometimes like
- 17:28you're gonna run on concrete too so it
- 17:30depends like yeah i've seen people not to
- 17:33be able to take off and i've seen
- 17:34people not get over i've seen a lot
- 17:38of gruesome injuries come out of it so
- 17:41that's always in your mind too we're like
- 17:43don't don't this one up don't it up
- 17:44yeah i i
- 17:46You keep saying things that are, again,
- 17:49taking me off the rails, which is fine.
- 17:51I'm that person.
- 17:53We won't even have a topic if you
- 17:55have me on this show.
- 17:56We don't have topics.
- 17:57You are our topic today.
- 17:58Don't worry about that.
- 18:01You made the statement that you were on
- 18:03a bus with Daniel Brandon and Rich's
- 18:05Woods.
- 18:06Yes.
- 18:08That statement alone stops me in my
- 18:11tracks.
- 18:11There's a lot to unpack there.
- 18:14I'm assuming it's one of those retreats
- 18:17Rich did with like...
- 18:20This was First Mayhem Classic.
- 18:23I was at that too.
- 18:25Yeah.
- 18:26My God,
- 18:26I've probably run into you a hundred
- 18:28times.
- 18:29I've been everywhere.
- 18:30Like I'm the person who's like
- 18:32perennially,
- 18:33like I'm just at all these events,
- 18:34but I like never make it to the
- 18:36games,
- 18:36which sidebar we'll get into that topic in
- 18:38a second.
- 18:39But I'm like at all of these things.
- 18:42And I do try to make friends with
- 18:43everybody because like I live in,
- 18:47i live in like nowhere and so like
- 18:49anytime i can get out to like a
- 18:50big event like i want to talk to
- 18:52everybody and be friends with all the
- 18:54people and connect with them throughout
- 18:55the years so yeah first mayhem classic it
- 18:58was in like did we what happened it
- 19:03was it was just before the world shut
- 19:05down
- 19:05exactly because i remember months before
- 19:07the world shut down yeah right yeah
- 19:09because i did that and then got my
- 19:11ass kicked and then brought that energy
- 19:14with me to norway like the next month
- 19:16so like but everybody at that that
- 19:18competition was so talented right so like
- 19:21obviously um
- 19:24Yeah,
- 19:24I love to be in a place where
- 19:25I get my ass handed to me.
- 19:26I don't like to necessarily get beat all
- 19:28the time, but like I like to learn.
- 19:29So, yeah,
- 19:30we're it's like we're on a bus.
- 19:33The first event is miserable, right?
- 19:36It's we're going to do a five mile
- 19:38run.
- 19:39up Pfeiffer mountain,
- 19:40starting at the firehouse that Rich worked
- 19:43at all the way up to Rich's dad's
- 19:44house.
- 19:45And so it's like the,
- 19:47the mountain is kind of the same as
- 19:49where I live.
- 19:49Like my, my parents live on a mountain.
- 19:51So I'm pretty used to like running up
- 19:53and down it, but on a road,
- 19:54this was like trail through the woods.
- 19:56It's raining.
- 19:57It's January.
- 19:58We have a
- 20:03whoever makes it up there first wins,
- 20:04you know?
- 20:05And so it's like,
- 20:06we had these assigned seats on the bus
- 20:08and it was the first time like I
- 20:09met Daniel Brandon and she was like,
- 20:11obviously she was Daniel Brandon,
- 20:12but she wasn't as like well known as
- 20:15she is now.
- 20:17Um,
- 20:17it was kind of her coming out party.
- 20:19right i think like that year like she
- 20:21really like she she made it to the
- 20:23games at the classic like she's so good
- 20:25and i remember um talking to my friends
- 20:28like just about how talented she was and
- 20:30just how like insanely savage she was on
- 20:32the floor because she's such a nice person
- 20:35and like her and i just again like
- 20:37just yapped about everything for like the
- 20:39half hour we were sitting on the bus
- 20:40and the bus ride over and everything so
- 20:43yeah it's one of those things where you're
- 20:45like it always pays to be nice to
- 20:47people too because a lot of people are
- 20:49so intense and especially they're like
- 20:51really intense and focused going into an
- 20:53event but like if you can kind of
- 20:55just be like we're all humans and we're
- 20:56here to like just have fun and do
- 20:59the thing we love and kind of like
- 21:01just be
- 21:03nice to each other,
- 21:04you're going to have a good time and
- 21:05everything.
- 21:06So I really appreciated that about her.
- 21:08And every time we run into each other
- 21:11at an event,
- 21:11we always say hi and catch up.
- 21:13So yeah, we talked a lot,
- 21:16found out we were both pole vaulters.
- 21:18She obviously did it when she was in
- 21:20college too.
- 21:21I didn't do it when I was in
- 21:22college, but you still just have the same,
- 21:24you know exactly what it's all about and
- 21:27all that.
- 21:27So it's cool to connect on those things.
- 21:31So now we're to question two.
- 21:34That's how we're in.
- 21:35We're into question two.
- 21:36All right.
- 21:39True or false,
- 21:40you occasionally work out with Clydesdale
- 21:43listener Dan Church.
- 21:45Yes.
- 21:48Clydesdale listener slash Corey's unpaid
- 21:50weightlifting coach.
- 21:52That's what I was going to say.
- 21:54That's my friend who I was like,
- 21:56he's big into the podcast.
- 21:58That's Dan Church.
- 22:00Dan and I go way, way back.
- 22:03He was like,
- 22:05He,
- 22:05I was the first competition I ever did
- 22:09was on a team with him.
- 22:11And two people at his gym,
- 22:12they were hosting like an in-house or like
- 22:15whatever gym was closest, like throw down.
- 22:18And like, I had just started CrossFit.
- 22:19I was probably like two and a half
- 22:20months into it.
- 22:21And they're like,
- 22:22do you want to do this competition?
- 22:23Like you are from the area.
- 22:25So do you want to like,
- 22:25we need another person.
- 22:26I was like, yeah, sure.
- 22:27Like I could do nothing at this place.
- 22:29Right.
- 22:30Like I didn't even have,
- 22:32I barely had any movement.
- 22:33Right.
- 22:34Just was like, all right,
- 22:35I'm here for fun.
- 22:35So yeah.
- 22:36yeah he um he helped me out a
- 22:37lot after that with like coaching some of
- 22:39my Olympic lifting and everything and um
- 22:41yeah we've been we've been friends for a
- 22:43long time he works out in his garage
- 22:46and then when he needs to like do
- 22:48any type of competition or the open or
- 22:50quarters or something he'll come up and
- 22:52then he it's always a good time it's
- 22:54always good to catch up with him yeah
- 22:57Yeah,
- 22:57he's the one that texted me last night,
- 23:00pronouncing your name,
- 23:01your last name phonetically.
- 23:05He's funny,
- 23:06he's adorable because he makes,
- 23:08he's definitely one of those people who
- 23:09like he makes sure like things are like
- 23:11in order like he's very organized when it
- 23:13comes to that kind of stuff and like,
- 23:14he's very good about helping people like.
- 23:17He's he's a nurse.
- 23:18So like his his job is to just
- 23:20be like caring and empathetic.
- 23:23He's funny.
- 23:24He technically works in the same or he
- 23:27did work in the same like hospital as
- 23:29my mom.
- 23:30And he'd be like, is your mom here?
- 23:31Like, you know,
- 23:32and like he'll just talk to her and
- 23:33everything.
- 23:34And, you know,
- 23:35it's just really funny to have that.
- 23:36But, yeah,
- 23:37it's it's it's just a small world,
- 23:40really small world.
- 23:42Yeah, he's a great guy.
- 23:44I met him because he identified as a
- 23:45Clydesdale.
- 23:46He is a Clydesdale.
- 23:52He is a large man.
- 23:55I went to watch him at the Masters
- 23:57Fitness Collective a couple years ago,
- 23:59and it was before she had knee surgery,
- 24:01and she almost fell down the stand steps,
- 24:05and Dan was there to catch her.
- 24:07Oh, that's sweet.
- 24:08That's nice.
- 24:09Yeah.
- 24:10So he's he's a great guy.
- 24:11He is.
- 24:12Yeah, he is.
- 24:16He's a Clydesdale that can fly on his
- 24:18hands.
- 24:18yes yeah he's got some he's got some
- 24:20really really good like he's got some big
- 24:23strengths and he'll always i feel bad he
- 24:26always talks like so much about himself
- 24:27he's like i haven't done this i'm so
- 24:29bad at this i'm like dude you don't
- 24:31even have the equipment to do this stuff
- 24:33in your house like you should like just
- 24:36take your wins like every time he comes
- 24:38over he's like i haven't had a muscle
- 24:40up since last year when i did a
- 24:41muscle up here and i'm like you're banging
- 24:43out like ten like okay like this is
- 24:46this awesome
- 24:47Jay Burch says,
- 24:48some of it is just pot-bellied Shetlands.
- 24:56So the next thing I have for you
- 24:58is, true or false,
- 25:00you are addicted to Tim Hortons coffee.
- 25:03Oh, I love Tim Hortons.
- 25:05Yes.
- 25:06I wouldn't say I'm addicted because that
- 25:09would entail that I would go crazy.
- 25:13If I am by a Tim Hortons,
- 25:17I go to Tim Hortons.
- 25:21There is like none around me, but okay.
- 25:25So my family,
- 25:27I have some family who live in Syracuse
- 25:29and some family who live in Buffalo.
- 25:30And when I went to go up to
- 25:32Buffalo, I was probably in like November,
- 25:38November,
- 25:40or October, they were everywhere.
- 25:42And I was like, this is amazing.
- 25:43And I like download the app and I
- 25:46was like,
- 25:46I'm going to get the free donuts.
- 25:47I'm going to get the free coffee.
- 25:48This is amazing.
- 25:49Like,
- 25:49and then when we do travel up there,
- 25:51there's like one,
- 25:52like really far into like Northern
- 25:54Pennsylvania that I always have to stop at
- 25:56no matter what, like, I don't care.
- 25:58It's like on the way up and on
- 25:59the way back,
- 25:59like I have to have it.
- 26:01It's so good.
- 26:01Like I'm so jealous of the, um,
- 26:05like northern like the upstate new yorkers
- 26:08and the canadians like i don't understand
- 26:10i don't understand like we why i don't
- 26:11have one like i'm really oh now that
- 26:14you got me you got me going on
- 26:15this i love i love tim horton so
- 26:18good
- 26:18So I live in Columbus, Ohio currently.
- 26:21Don't tell me you'd be like,
- 26:22I have one down the street.
- 26:23Oh, we have a billion of them.
- 26:26They used to be owned by Wendy's.
- 26:27Okay.
- 26:27And Wendy's corporate headquarters is here
- 26:30in Columbus.
- 26:32Oh.
- 26:32So they used to have the like duos.
- 26:35It was half a Wendy's,
- 26:36half of the Tim Hortons.
- 26:38Wow.
- 26:39Then Wendy's sold them off.
- 26:40And so all those have either...
- 26:43been converted to just one of the two
- 26:46or just shut down,
- 26:47but we have a ton of Tim Hortons
- 26:49and I think it's,
- 26:52Don't hate me.
- 26:52I think it's the worst coffee ever.
- 26:55Whoa.
- 26:55Do you think it's the worst?
- 26:56I think Duncan is the worst coffee ever.
- 26:58I give so much shit to people about
- 27:02it because it's just as expensive as
- 27:05Starbucks.
- 27:05It doesn't taste nearly as good.
- 27:06It's super inconsistent.
- 27:08The employees are always really miserable.
- 27:10I'll give you the last two points.
- 27:13It's not consistent and the employees are
- 27:14miserable.
- 27:15Right.
- 27:15Like,
- 27:17I used to go to work at a
- 27:19camp when I was like, eighteen,
- 27:21nineteen years old,
- 27:22and there was a Dunkin on my way
- 27:24to work.
- 27:24So me and my coworker were neighbors.
- 27:27We would stop there and we would get
- 27:28a dollar iced coffee.
- 27:29I can live with shitty coffee for a
- 27:31dollar.
- 27:32I can't live with shitty coffee for five
- 27:34dollars, though.
- 27:35Like, that's that's where I draw the line.
- 27:37Like,
- 27:38I know what I'm getting into at seven
- 27:39eleven,
- 27:40but I'm paying like thirty nine cents for
- 27:41the coffee.
- 27:43That's, you know.
- 27:45oh you mean to tell me at one
- 27:46point you could get a baconator and a
- 27:48cup of coffee a cup of tim horton's
- 27:49coffee at the same place you could damn
- 27:52that's incredible right like yeah talk
- 27:54about living your best life right you know
- 27:56you know what the most consistent coffee
- 27:58is paper street paper street i've never
- 28:01had it i've never had it and i
- 28:02just i just met colin mertens in person
- 28:05the other day so
- 28:08his uh the hank his his blend whatever
- 28:13his roast over there i just i just
- 28:15emptied my last bag it is fantastic okay
- 28:18yeah like all the gabe stuff is i
- 28:20have not had a cup of coffee or
- 28:22one of his cool you can't be that
- 28:24far from like their main headquarters
- 28:27where is their main headquarters it's in
- 28:29new jersey it's in jersey oh
- 28:32Like just south of New York City.
- 28:33Their first brick and mortar store is in
- 28:35Jersey.
- 28:36Oh, I'm not.
- 28:39One at Proven.
- 28:41Yeah.
- 28:41I know they've got the one at Proven
- 28:43because they were talking about because we
- 28:44were going to Starbucks and they're like,
- 28:46Colton,
- 28:47we'll just write paper sheet on your
- 28:49coffee.
- 28:49Yeah.
- 28:51but um oh okay i'm gonna check that
- 28:53out because i'm only an hour fifteen
- 28:56outside of new york so like pretty much
- 28:57everywhere in like i'm right on the border
- 28:59of jersey like i could spit out my
- 29:00window and it'll be in in jersey but
- 29:04um yeah so it is true that you
- 29:06are from you are from the greatest state
- 29:08in the union new jersey pennsylvania oh
- 29:15I live in New Jersey.
- 29:18I like how she said it question and
- 29:22she went New Jersey.
- 29:23Is that what we're going with right now?
- 29:26Hey,
- 29:26you're either you either really love it,
- 29:28right?
- 29:29Or you really hate it because I was
- 29:30born in New Jersey.
- 29:31My family is from New Jersey and they
- 29:33relocated a lot of them relocated to
- 29:36Pennsylvania.
- 29:38So you were actually born in New Jersey?
- 29:40Yes.
- 29:41See, I was born in Pennsylvania.
- 29:42Where in Pennsylvania?
- 29:44So western side.
- 29:45Oh,
- 29:46like between Pittsburgh and Erie in the
- 29:49woods.
- 29:51And actually,
- 29:51I'm my wife and I've made the decision
- 29:53we're gonna move back there for
- 29:54retirement.
- 29:55So Oh, look at that.
- 29:58But yeah, love it there.
- 30:01But I have been to the Poconos a
- 30:03ton.
- 30:03And that is a beautiful place to live.
- 30:05It is very beautiful.
- 30:09I was giving some of my friends a
- 30:11really hard time about where they live in
- 30:13Long Island.
- 30:14And I was like,
- 30:14there's no way you could pay me to
- 30:16live in Long Island with how much it
- 30:17costs.
- 30:17Like my friend has a apartment that
- 30:20they're paying for that is probably more
- 30:23than my mortgage.
- 30:24And I was like,
- 30:25I know you guys have like your things
- 30:27there,
- 30:28but there's like way too many people.
- 30:32Yeah, there's just way too many people,
- 30:33way too much cost.
- 30:34Like I can't justify paying that much
- 30:39money just to be near a Trader Joe's.
- 30:41And like their distance to get into the
- 30:45city is like also the same as mine,
- 30:48but just like with a lot more headache.
- 30:49I don't know.
- 30:51There's like some places in the world that
- 30:52I'm like, why do you live here?
- 30:53Why do you even live here?
- 30:55My one of my roommates in college was
- 30:58from Long Island and we would go up
- 31:00there for weekends and just party like
- 31:04crazy.
- 31:07But yeah.
- 31:08So I,
- 31:09from Western PA all the way to Long
- 31:12Island, right.
- 31:13Oh my God.
- 31:14Well,
- 31:14I have a friend who he owned a
- 31:15gym out in Long Island and he has
- 31:18a girlfriend who was in Pittsburgh and he
- 31:19would drive through all,
- 31:22all through there.
- 31:22And like, he'd,
- 31:23he'd pit stop here and stuff.
- 31:25And I'd be like,
- 31:26I don't know how you're doing that.
- 31:27He's like, the drive is not that bad.
- 31:28It's only like seven hours.
- 31:30I'm like, seven hours?
- 31:32Like, no way.
- 31:33No way.
- 31:35I haven't even been out to Western PA
- 31:37because I'm like,
- 31:37that's a five-hour drive for me.
- 31:39Like, that's going to be crazy.
- 31:40I drive from my house to the office
- 31:45and then twenty minutes to the gym and
- 31:47then ten minutes, not even,
- 31:49eight minutes back to my house.
- 31:50That's about as far as I ever want
- 31:51to drive if I can help it.
- 31:53Right, right.
- 31:53Yeah, I used to commute for work.
- 31:55And I would just be like,
- 31:56I am miserable.
- 31:57I not want to do this anymore.
- 31:58Like, I don't know how people manage this.
- 32:00And then just be like, you know,
- 32:02I'm gonna go out.
- 32:03I'm gonna drive all the way across this
- 32:06giant state, two states away.
- 32:08Oh,
- 32:09No, I'm not like a good,
- 32:12I could probably drive with like,
- 32:14by myself,
- 32:14but I'm not a good like passenger princess
- 32:16at a certain point.
- 32:17Like I gotta be like,
- 32:18we got like tops like an hour and
- 32:20a half and I gotta like,
- 32:21I gotta go get a coffee.
- 32:22I gotta go pee.
- 32:23I gotta walk around like.
- 32:25Are you saying you're a control freak?
- 32:27No, I have to.
- 32:29No, no, no.
- 32:29I like I either need to.
- 32:31Well, yeah,
- 32:31I need to drive or we need to
- 32:33be driving an RV and I need to
- 32:34be able to get up because like I
- 32:36can't just sit there.
- 32:37Yeah, no, I want to represent.
- 32:40I get that.
- 32:41Like, yeah,
- 32:42we'll drive to Houston from here.
- 32:44And it's about four and a half,
- 32:45five hours,
- 32:46but we'll make three stops on the way.
- 32:48yeah right like you have to have like
- 32:49your designated places where you're like i
- 32:51know i i'm gonna look forward to doing
- 32:53this and like i'm going to know i
- 32:55know i'm gonna get out and like that's
- 32:57gonna make this trip more digestible for
- 33:00me yeah yeah i don't mind driving i
- 33:02will i will ride out but we gonna
- 33:04stop i have no problem doing that you
- 33:08ever stop at like a bucky's like oh
- 33:10dude
- 33:12Who hasn't?
- 33:13I'm actually contractually obligated to
- 33:14stop at every Buc-ee's I run across.
- 33:16I was going to say,
- 33:19if someone's just driving by,
- 33:20they're like, no,
- 33:21that doesn't look like it's for me.
- 33:22I'm like,
- 33:22you don't look like you're for me.
- 33:23We're not friends.
- 33:27If you can physically drive by a Buc-ee's
- 33:29and not stop,
- 33:30I don't need you in my life.
- 33:32No, you have to be a sociopath.
- 33:35My only beef with Buc-ee's is there's as
- 33:37many people in a Buc-ee's as there are
- 33:39in Long Island.
- 33:40That's it.
- 33:41Generally speaking.
- 33:43Generally speaking.
- 33:44You're so right.
- 33:45It's so crowded.
- 33:49There's one three hours from me going
- 33:52east, basically in Biloxi.
- 33:54The closest one in Texas to me is
- 33:57in Baytown,
- 33:58but they're building one in Lafayette,
- 34:00which is about an hour and fifteen minutes
- 34:02away, and that's a fucking problem.
- 34:04I was going to say, you're like,
- 34:06I can handle an hour and fifteen for
- 34:07a buck.
- 34:08You know how many friends I have in
- 34:09Lafayette?
- 34:11I'm going to see Robbie today.
- 34:13Oh, are you?
- 34:14I was like, yeah, breakfast.
- 34:17I'm going to bring home ten brisket
- 34:19sandwiches.
- 34:20Breakfast brisket tacos.
- 34:23Oh, my God.
- 34:25Yeah, it's a problem.
- 34:26How can a gas station make barbecue that
- 34:28good?
- 34:31They have a centrally located smokehouse.
- 34:33So I looked this up.
- 34:34They have a centrally located smokehouse
- 34:37where they make all their brisket.
- 34:38That's how they achieve the consistency.
- 34:41They'll vacuum seal them.
- 34:42And then when you see them,
- 34:44brisket's coming out on the board.
- 34:45everybody yells it whenever it happens
- 34:47it's because they've whatever process they
- 34:49have to warm it back up is finished
- 34:51and they'll bring fresh brisket out on the
- 34:53board and it's because it's been vacuum
- 34:55sealed and whatnot i do we looked it
- 34:57up uh my last trip to actually to
- 34:59houston to figure out because i was like
- 35:00this makes no sense they're not they're
- 35:02not there's not a big smoker at every
- 35:05single bucky's you run across but that
- 35:07would be really cool though someday they
- 35:11got the money
- 35:13Yeah, a hundred percent.
- 35:15It could happen.
- 35:15They pay their employees an absurd amount,
- 35:19absurd amount of money for what they do.
- 35:20Oh, I'm sure.
- 35:22Oh, I'm sure.
- 35:24AccuBlackDragon, I feel bad for you.
- 35:26A UK person doesn't have buckies.
- 35:30No.
- 35:30Oh, no.
- 35:31They don't have anything out there.
- 35:33Well,
- 35:33I should say that they do have things.
- 35:35I've never been to the UK.
- 35:38They do have things.
- 35:40They got like buildings and stuff and
- 35:41roads.
- 35:42It's fantastic.
- 35:43A big clock, I think.
- 35:45There's a giant clock somewhere.
- 35:46There used to be a bridge,
- 35:48but now it's in...
- 35:50So last true or false.
- 35:51Okay.
- 35:53You started your professional career as a
- 35:55graphic designer.
- 35:57Yes, that's true.
- 35:58Yes.
- 35:59I'm waiting for some, a fault,
- 36:00like a false thing.
- 36:02Like I'm waiting for you to come out
- 36:04of like left field with something.
- 36:06You're standby.
- 36:08Well,
- 36:08the reason I had to ask that is,
- 36:11so I was so excited about the,
- 36:12are you looking for a designer?
- 36:17If anyone's hiring, I'd like a job.
- 36:22Well, don't you own an affiliate?
- 36:24I do.
- 36:26Don't I pay me?
- 36:28If I own an affiliate,
- 36:33me would be the first person that would
- 36:34pay.
- 36:34I'm just throwing that out there.
- 36:35Oh, like me,
- 36:37me is like the last person that gets
- 36:39paid.
- 36:40I know that's,
- 36:40I know that's actually how it works.
- 36:42Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 36:43my the reason i asked that question about
- 36:45the graphic design is i was all proud
- 36:47of my thumbnail and i sent it to
- 36:48you last night and i'm like and then
- 36:50afterwards i was like oh my god she
- 36:51was a graphic designer she probably
- 36:53thought well if you just move this here
- 36:54and move that over here no i thought
- 36:57it was so cool i loved it and
- 36:58i might put up on my story my
- 37:00so my best friend and i have a
- 37:02obviously a best friend relationship and
- 37:04she'll be like that doesn't look like you
- 37:06and like i know she's gonna say something
- 37:08like i know she's gonna say something like
- 37:10like kind of witty.
- 37:13And I have to get ahead of her.
- 37:15And I'm like, yeah, it's much less ugly.
- 37:17And then she hits me with a, no,
- 37:18you actually look more beautiful in
- 37:20person.
- 37:20And I'm like,
- 37:22that was not where I thought you were
- 37:23going with it.
- 37:24Because usually she'll just be like, yeah,
- 37:27you ugly bitch.
- 37:28i thought we were roasting each other what
- 37:30is happening right now i know there are
- 37:32some times where like i get really caught
- 37:34off guard and like i i will get
- 37:36roasted when i don't think i'm going to
- 37:38and then or she'll compliment me when i'm
- 37:39like i have to like be on edge
- 37:41like what are you trying to do here
- 37:43but i thought it was really cool i
- 37:44loved it i really did
- 37:46So I,
- 37:47everything on our show that advertises our
- 37:49show is in a comic book style.
- 37:51And so people like,
- 37:53like their comic book version of
- 37:54themselves and some people do not.
- 37:57And so it's always this like trepidation.
- 38:00Do I, do I share it?
- 38:02Are they going to like it?
- 38:04I've had people like say,
- 38:06can you change that please?
- 38:09I did have someone be like,
- 38:10look at that dunk.
- 38:11And I was like,
- 38:12it's pretty accurate though.
- 38:14Yeah.
- 38:17No, no, no, that's the scale.
- 38:23They got it right.
- 38:24The artist got it right.
- 38:27Do you want to talk CrossFit Games season?
- 38:29Yeah, we can do that.
- 38:30Or American Gladiator first?
- 38:35Let's start off with the bad stuff first.
- 38:38Let's start off with the CrossFit Games
- 38:39season.
- 38:40Okay, CrossFit Games.
- 38:40First, I want people to know,
- 38:42you were a podium winner at the CrossFit
- 38:44Games.
- 38:46CrossFit Milford.
- 38:48You came in second, two thousand fifteen.
- 38:53I have to know because Rich's team was
- 38:56not in the lead going into the final
- 38:58event.
- 39:01What are and I'm an old school nerd,
- 39:04so it's just me like having watched that
- 39:08in person,
- 39:08like what was going through your head?
- 39:11Because I'm hoping you're over it ten
- 39:13years later.
- 39:14oh yeah i mean i'm are you though
- 39:18um that was a that was a very
- 39:21interesting year right that was the first
- 39:23year that i ever got to compete at
- 39:26regionals and never got to compete at the
- 39:28game so i was like really spoiled going
- 39:30into my next couple years because i was
- 39:32like
- 39:33well the first time I I competed I
- 39:36went right to regionals and the first time
- 39:37I went to regionals I went right to
- 39:38the games and the first time I went
- 39:40to the games I was still on the
- 39:40podium so like there's only up from here
- 39:43and the only up is first place so
- 39:46um that kind of that messed with me
- 39:47a lot but um yeah I was on
- 39:49the team with CrossFit Milford it was
- 39:52really fun training that year I was
- 39:54full-time working um I was working at NBC
- 39:56Sports at the time so I was like
- 39:58know young getting my training in the
- 40:00morning working all day getting my
- 40:01training at night like that was my whole
- 40:03life basically and we just kind of went
- 40:06in and it was across the mill for
- 40:07its first time at the games or sorry
- 40:10technically no i think like they went in
- 40:12like or something like that or
- 40:14when it was like the ranch and stuff
- 40:16but um went there yeah it was like
- 40:19the first year that like rich stopped
- 40:21being the individual and now rich is the
- 40:23team and he had you know like i
- 40:25just remember like it was like ellie and
- 40:28um matt and oh god who else was
- 40:31on the team that year they had the
- 40:32masters athlete as one of the lauren yeah
- 40:35lauren um i forget who else um kristen
- 40:39um so yeah it was it was definitely
- 40:42like one of those things where like the
- 40:43team was super fit
- 40:45We had a fit team.
- 40:47NorCal,
- 40:48that was the year that Jason Kalipa was
- 40:49at the games.
- 40:51Miranda tore her knee up.
- 40:54That happened right next to me.
- 40:57Because NorCal was crushing that games.
- 41:00And then all of a sudden,
- 41:01now they're out because Miranda gets hurt.
- 41:05Right.
- 41:05So it was wild.
- 41:07Yeah.
- 41:07And like that was also like Tommy
- 41:09Hackenbrook was with you.
- 41:11And at that time I had gotten cast
- 41:13for Stone Cold's Broken Skull Ranch.
- 41:16So like I was supposed to fly out
- 41:18the week before the games to film that.
- 41:20And I had said like, hey,
- 41:22I can't do it.
- 41:23Like, I don't want to get hurt.
- 41:24And I was talking to him about it
- 41:25because he was the winner for the one
- 41:27season.
- 41:28The legend.
- 41:29Yeah.
- 41:30yeah and they were doing like this whole
- 41:32reunion thing so he was like you know
- 41:34you made the right choice because like i
- 41:35watched people do like three hour grapples
- 41:39and i watched people like have to go
- 41:40to the hospital for like broken legs and
- 41:42stuff so i was like okay cool like
- 41:44so we got to like connect with that
- 41:45but it was crazy like it was like
- 41:47yeah you norcal mayhem and then we were
- 41:51just like in the mix of just like
- 41:52we're just we're just a team from random
- 41:55Connecticut,
- 41:57like and I remember it started off like
- 42:02pretty bad.
- 42:02It was like a swim event and a
- 42:04worm in the beach and it was pretty
- 42:06bad.
- 42:07And then I think like we started to
- 42:08like chip our way back up.
- 42:09Everybody on our team was like really fit,
- 42:12like very good endurance.
- 42:13We had like Kalina Ladaris on our team
- 42:15and she was just kind of like the
- 42:18She was very much like Sam Briggs,
- 42:20like where she was just engine,
- 42:21all engine.
- 42:22And everyone was super well-rounded.
- 42:25And I think like our main break was
- 42:29that we won.
- 42:32It was kind of,
- 42:33it was like a worm squat and then
- 42:35like a run through the stadium.
- 42:37And we were like neck and neck with
- 42:40NorCal and they're right next to us.
- 42:42And it was just like,
- 42:42that's when we started to get like a
- 42:44lot of momentum and then made our way
- 42:47up through the weekend.
- 42:49Obviously,
- 42:49like we were like in like a high
- 42:51spot and everything.
- 42:52I'm pretty sure at the time,
- 42:54even before Miranda got hurt,
- 42:55like we were like third place.
- 42:57So we like we're just edging out you.
- 43:00And then, yeah, they got hurt.
- 43:02It was like a clean and jerk workout.
- 43:04I didn't even see her like I didn't
- 43:06see what happened.
- 43:07Thank God,
- 43:08because I would have probably gotten so
- 43:09spooked.
- 43:10apparently like she dropped the bar and
- 43:12then like that's when her acl just like
- 43:14tore it was wild it was so wild
- 43:16and then i remember they kept going like
- 43:18they were allowed to keep going without
- 43:19her and they still did really great
- 43:21without her like it was their team was
- 43:23so incredibly fit the only thing i will
- 43:25say is that like i've heard her talk
- 43:28about it and they'll be like we should
- 43:29have won the games like well
- 43:34you'll never know.
- 43:35Like, so, you know,
- 43:37but we also felt like, I mean,
- 43:39we never felt like we should have won
- 43:41the games,
- 43:41but there was a point at the end
- 43:44of the weekend where they just kept
- 43:45throwing events in and we were like,
- 43:48is this going to stop?
- 43:49And then eventually it was sort of like,
- 43:51no,
- 43:51I think this is like one of those
- 43:53things where like mayhem was in second and
- 43:55we were in first and they're like,
- 43:56we can't like, this is my conspiracy.
- 44:01might upset people,
- 44:02but they wanted Rich to win his first
- 44:04year as a team.
- 44:07So like the last event,
- 44:09the last event should have been the last
- 44:11event, but then they were like,
- 44:12wait a second, wait a second.
- 44:14We're going to do like a hundred worm
- 44:16cleaning jerks and that's who will decide
- 44:18the winner.
- 44:18So I'm not mad about it.
- 44:21Cause it's over, but.
- 44:27So where, where do you have the metal?
- 44:30It's in the gym.
- 44:30It's in the gym.
- 44:31Okay.
- 44:32Yeah.
- 44:33Yeah.
- 44:35I have it hung up in the gym.
- 44:35So then my credit card that year,
- 44:36that was good though.
- 44:39Outstanding.
- 44:40Yeah.
- 44:41Fast forward.
- 44:42Ten years to today.
- 44:44You,
- 44:45you decide you're going to do the master's
- 44:47division.
- 44:47I don't even know how that works.
- 44:49Like you just start the open and you
- 44:51just kind of see where you land.
- 44:53And then do you decide,
- 44:54or did you decide prior to the season?
- 44:56So I knew that this was my first
- 44:59master's year.
- 44:59And I was like, OK,
- 45:00I'm going to go all in for master's.
- 45:03I'm not really even going to mess around
- 45:05with individual this year.
- 45:07And so I'm always sick for the open,
- 45:11no matter what.
- 45:12So it's always just like a just do
- 45:14your best and move on.
- 45:15So I was sick for the open,
- 45:17still coming off of being sick for
- 45:18quarters, and was like, OK,
- 45:20as long as I can just make it
- 45:21through and be healthy and then push it
- 45:23for semis, then I'll be OK.
- 45:26So I had already gone on with, like,
- 45:29luckily, because the Masters was, like,
- 45:32the first week.
- 45:35And I was like,
- 45:35I'm only going to dedicate myself to the
- 45:37online because there was a lot of
- 45:39traveling happening for me this summer.
- 45:42I didn't want to go.
- 45:43Like, you guys know Jess Kresmian?
- 45:46Yes.
- 45:46She's like, okay.
- 45:48that poor girl she did like three
- 45:50back-to-back weekends to try to qualify
- 45:53and i was like god bless this woman
- 45:56like she's a mom she's a master's athlete
- 45:58like she's traveling everywhere i mean i
- 46:00felt so bad she was like my body
- 46:02is just not where it's at like at
- 46:04the end of this and i'm like i
- 46:05understand because that was my goal was
- 46:06like i got invited to legends i got
- 46:08invited to magic city
- 46:10i was like i'm not gonna go take
- 46:11my chances and fly out spend a bunch
- 46:13of money and maybe don't qualify for like
- 46:14these things like i'm just gonna put all
- 46:16my effort into the online semis so i
- 46:19forfeited those did the online semis
- 46:22everything was good and then it was like
- 46:24one of those things of like i i
- 46:26qualified i
- 46:28qualified.
- 46:28I ended up in fourth for a masters
- 46:32and the semis.
- 46:33And I got the news on,
- 46:36it was like the Saturday before like the,
- 46:39everything had like, um,
- 46:41later board locked.
- 46:42And they were like,
- 46:44you didn't complete the standards of the
- 46:46power clean for the the tie break of
- 46:49that like deadlift workout like every all
- 46:52of my videos were good everything was fine
- 46:55i was killing myself this whole weekend
- 46:57and they were like yeah
- 46:58And I was like, oh my God.
- 47:00And I had so many people like reaching
- 47:02out to me that were like,
- 47:03and I had posted obviously like what I
- 47:06did.
- 47:06I was like, you guys be the judge.
- 47:07Like you tell me what you think.
- 47:09I think every rep looks the same.
- 47:11They said half of my reps were garbage.
- 47:14And half of them were good.
- 47:15And I had done my whole like appeal.
- 47:17I had done like the whole like this
- 47:18is what happened.
- 47:19I typed up my whole thing like and
- 47:22they were like, yeah, sorry,
- 47:24they're garbage.
- 47:24And I'm like, fuck.
- 47:25And so I'm, you know,
- 47:27I'm not even bothering like I'm like my
- 47:29heart's broken.
- 47:30I'm crushed.
- 47:30I'm crying.
- 47:31I like just, you know,
- 47:32I got friends who are like, well,
- 47:33this person didn't do it right.
- 47:34And if they're going to do this,
- 47:35they're going to do that.
- 47:36And they were reaching out to CrossFit and
- 47:37everything.
- 47:38And I'm like, you know what?
- 47:38It's not going to it's not going to
- 47:39help.
- 47:40It's not going to change like one.
- 47:43I should have had my camera angled a
- 47:44little bit different because maybe then it
- 47:46would have looked different too.
- 47:48Like that's just the way my body is
- 47:49structured.
- 47:50Like, you know, three,
- 47:52what a weird movement to have as a
- 47:53tie break.
- 47:54Because like,
- 47:54there's a lot that you could just,
- 47:56it should have been a clean and jerk
- 47:57in my opinion,
- 47:58but it's a lot easier to judge.
- 48:00Right.
- 48:01And so were they saying your elbows
- 48:03weren't coming through?
- 48:04No, they said my knees were soft.
- 48:06I had soft knees.
- 48:08Yeah, I had soft knees.
- 48:10I said, this is just my legs.
- 48:11But it wasn't meant to be.
- 48:14It took me probably, like,
- 48:15a week or two to, like,
- 48:17come to that conclusion.
- 48:19And I had, like,
- 48:19a lot of friends who were like,
- 48:20you know what,
- 48:21just focus on this other stuff.
- 48:23You know, and so...
- 48:26I accept it now.
- 48:27Whereas like before I'm like,
- 48:28I'm going to de-affiliate.
- 48:30I'm not going to do,
- 48:30I'm not going to pay CrossFit for
- 48:32anything.
- 48:32I'm not going to do this anymore.
- 48:33You know,
- 48:34like had my like pity party and stuff
- 48:36and everything.
- 48:36And yeah, it didn't, it didn't work out.
- 48:39I mean,
- 48:39it's not the first time I've gotten like
- 48:41penalized for things,
- 48:42but at the same time,
- 48:43I just hate the fact that like,
- 48:45we have to have like,
- 48:47two judges who were there and like I
- 48:49had my judge telling me like you need
- 48:51to lock out and I was like you're
- 48:53right I need to lock out so then
- 48:54I started correcting it but then even like
- 48:56the corrected reps they said weren't right
- 48:58either so I'm like what's the point in
- 48:59having two people on two different angles
- 49:03seeing what I'm doing they're dictating if
- 49:05it's good or not I then have to
- 49:07leave it up to the public to dictate
- 49:09if I did it good and then I
- 49:10have to leave it up to the powers
- 49:11that be like
- 49:13In what universe is that right?
- 49:17I could have just went to an event,
- 49:19qualified,
- 49:20and then done with one judge there.
- 49:24And had a lot more fun.
- 49:26Magic City was a blast.
- 49:28I know.
- 49:28I know.
- 49:30And I really debated on going there and
- 49:32was like, oh, that would be so cool.
- 49:33And yeah, I just, you know what?
- 49:36Mistakes were made.
- 49:37Mistakes were made on that.
- 49:40So like I understand everything that
- 49:44you're saying and thinking.
- 49:45The problem we have in this sport is
- 49:46so many people cheat.
- 49:48So many people cheat, right?
- 49:50So to say you had two judges, well,
- 49:53other people have two judges and they let
- 49:55them get away with everything, right?
- 49:58So your hands are tied on how you
- 50:00do it.
- 50:01Then it's just the opinion of the person
- 50:03watching your video that time.
- 50:05right that's the thing i feel like there
- 50:07should be like a board like because what
- 50:10i might think are bad reps you might
- 50:13think are good and you might think are
- 50:15good right and so like i kind of
- 50:17feel like it has to be like the
- 50:18same thing as like judging weightlifting
- 50:20like you have three judges and like some
- 50:23are gonna give you a red light and
- 50:24some of you gonna give you a white
- 50:25light right and like it depends on what
- 50:27they're seeing so yeah if you have like
- 50:29that one person who's just like yeah this
- 50:31is not good or
- 50:32Or you just have a person who like
- 50:33doesn't know if it's good or not.
- 50:35So they're just going to say it's not
- 50:36good.
- 50:37Like I had the same thing happen this
- 50:38weekend at Xenon where I was making,
- 50:41I was doing chest or pull-ups and I
- 50:42was getting no rep.
- 50:44And I stopped, I stopped.
- 50:45I go, why?
- 50:47Like,
- 50:47why are you giving me the no reps?
- 50:48And she's like, well,
- 50:49you're coming up short.
- 50:50And I'm like,
- 50:52Okay.
- 50:53And so then I'm like, she's,
- 50:55she's looking at it from this angle.
- 50:57So maybe it does look like I'm coming
- 50:58up short and I'm like,
- 50:59I'm just going to try to rip it.
- 51:00And then as I addressed her on this,
- 51:02she didn't give me any more no reps
- 51:03after that.
- 51:04And I was like,
- 51:05all the reps are the same.
- 51:06So it's like,
- 51:07kind of comes down to like,
- 51:09oh,
- 51:09should I just say something for the sake
- 51:11of saying something at that?
- 51:13Or do I really believe that these were
- 51:15good or anything?
- 51:16So I don't know.
- 51:17There's a lot of it's very subjective.
- 51:20Judging is still subjective in our sport.
- 51:22It's not as objective as I feel like
- 51:24it should be.
- 51:25I think people get really scared because I
- 51:29don't mean to name any names,
- 51:30but there's people out there who obviously
- 51:32have a
- 51:33big grievances on judging in the sports.
- 51:36So they just kind of like double down
- 51:38on like, Oh, I should just,
- 51:40I just should hammer them with no reps
- 51:41type of thing.
- 51:42So I don't know.
- 51:43It's, it's very subjective.
- 51:45So I was a judge during the regional
- 51:47days and I, and I would,
- 51:49and I would say that it's hard.
- 51:52Ninety-nine percent of the judges are not
- 51:54malicious about anything.
- 51:55No, no, no, no.
- 51:57The best job they can.
- 51:58But I will say like, because of, um,
- 52:03the way that CrossFit is structured,
- 52:05it's season now.
- 52:07Yeah.
- 52:07We're getting thin in the number of people
- 52:10that are available.
- 52:11Well, that, that, and like, they don't,
- 52:13they don't allow more people to come in.
- 52:15Like I've applied to be a judge and
- 52:17they're like, no, they don't need you.
- 52:19And I'm like, you do.
- 52:20Yeah.
- 52:21It's, it's a tough.
- 52:24I mean, hold on.
- 52:24Podium, podium in twenty fifteen.
- 52:31Right.
- 52:32Yeah.
- 52:33semi-finals, affiliate owner,
- 52:36all of this stuff.
- 52:37And you're like, I would like to judge.
- 52:38And they're like, nope, nope, nope.
- 52:40You have no experience.
- 52:41That's insane.
- 52:43It kind of comes down to like when
- 52:45you apply for a job and they're like,
- 52:46we require five years of experience in
- 52:48this field.
- 52:49And you're like,
- 52:50I'm trying to get into the field.
- 52:51And they're like, too bad.
- 52:55That shit crazy.
- 52:58Andrew Sten is big in the judging world.
- 53:01He said he'll put in a good word
- 53:02for you.
- 53:03Oh, good.
- 53:03Yeah.
- 53:04I would love to judge some events.
- 53:05Absolutely.
- 53:06Yeah.
- 53:07Andrew's good at what he does.
- 53:08I've met some good friends.
- 53:10I just hope you compete again.
- 53:12That's at the end of this.
- 53:14Because I saw your post like right after
- 53:16and you were just like,
- 53:18I don't know if I'm ever doing this
- 53:19again.
- 53:19And trust me,
- 53:21I'm a hothead from way back in the
- 53:23day.
- 53:24And I get to those moments.
- 53:27You are going to compete again?
- 53:29Yeah.
- 53:30Okay.
- 53:31yeah i would i can't help it i'm
- 53:34a sucker you know like this is it's
- 53:36changed my life and like as much as
- 53:38i do hate the outcome like i know
- 53:41that every year it's ever changing i like
- 53:44you know i obviously own the affiliate and
- 53:47stuff and like i have
- 53:50you know grappled with the like do I
- 53:51do this do I do that um I
- 53:54think now as like I'm obviously further
- 53:58away from it happening like I'm not I'm
- 54:00not upset over it or anything like I'm
- 54:02still me and I still know like my
- 54:05efforts and my capabilities and I know
- 54:06that I'll be able to have the chance
- 54:08and and all that so I'm not like
- 54:10very I mean I'm now looking at
- 54:13I became bitter again once I saw all
- 54:15the adaptive athletes getting, like,
- 54:17slapped.
- 54:18And I was like, come on.
- 54:19Like, come on.
- 54:22Like,
- 54:23these poor people have so many different
- 54:25standards that they have to abide by and
- 54:27just so much different stuff that, like,
- 54:29come on.
- 54:30You're going to do that?
- 54:31And it's just, I don't know.
- 54:32There needs to be more consistency across
- 54:35the board.
- 54:35And really my gripe is that.
- 54:38It's not so much, like,
- 54:40Like, oh,
- 54:41the HQ is bad and everything is bad.
- 54:43It's just,
- 54:44I just don't think that they have the
- 54:46right people in place right now to like
- 54:50get everything as consistent and fair as
- 54:53possible.
- 54:54And that could take time.
- 54:55And like, it's ever changing.
- 54:57So I have to give them the benefit
- 54:58of the doubt sometimes there too.
- 54:59And again,
- 55:00I have to take accountability on my part
- 55:02because should I have watched my video and
- 55:04been like, you know what?
- 55:05Like, would I think those were no reps?
- 55:06Like, obviously I didn't.
- 55:09And now I have to learn from those
- 55:11mistakes.
- 55:11Like,
- 55:11I have some very good friends who were
- 55:14like, hey, I love you,
- 55:15but I'm gonna call you out on your
- 55:16on your shit.
- 55:17Like, they're not entirely wrong.
- 55:19And so I was like,
- 55:21yeah, you know,
- 55:22there's nothing I can do about it now
- 55:24except for move on.
- 55:25So, you know,
- 55:26and I knew like putting it out there
- 55:28too,
- 55:28I was going to have like a fair
- 55:29amount of support and a fair amount of
- 55:31haters.
- 55:32And I was just really glad that the
- 55:33people who did support me or like,
- 55:36you know, I, I respect them and I,
- 55:38I know want them to, yeah,
- 55:41I think highly of them.
- 55:42And then there's obviously like the people
- 55:44who I don't know that are like,
- 55:47You're a cheater.
- 55:48Take accountability.
- 55:49I'm like, I know.
- 55:50I will.
- 55:52I was intentionally making my knees soft.
- 55:54I do that all the time.
- 55:56The internet's stupid.
- 55:59I'm like,
- 55:59you do a minute of Max Power Cleans
- 56:02and tell me how that goes.
- 56:05Let's get to my grievance,
- 56:07and that is American Gladiator.
- 56:09Oh, no.
- 56:10What's the grievance?
- 56:11The airing of grievances.
- 56:12Here we go.
- 56:12Great.
- 56:14You were mad about the game season.
- 56:16I was mad how gladiators played out.
- 56:19But I have to remember,
- 56:20this is entertainment.
- 56:22Yeah.
- 56:22It's not really a sport.
- 56:25Yes.
- 56:26So... It is and it isn't.
- 56:28I will go into whatever you want to
- 56:30go into on this.
- 56:31I... Yeah.
- 56:33So...
- 56:35I was all excited.
- 56:36I grew up watching gladiators.
- 56:38I love gladiators and I started watching
- 56:41it.
- 56:41So you said they reached out to you
- 56:43because of your performance at syndicate.
- 56:46And so what was that process like?
- 56:49So I had a random DM,
- 56:52which was like very spammy.
- 56:53And it was like, hey,
- 56:55my casting director watched you compete
- 56:57this.
- 56:58It was like in July.
- 57:00He's like, oh,
- 57:00my casting director watched you compete in
- 57:02Knoxville this past June.
- 57:04He doesn't have Instagram.
- 57:06I'm his assistant.
- 57:07I'm reaching out on his behalf.
- 57:08Would you entertain a interview for the
- 57:12show, the reboot of American Gladiators?
- 57:15And I was like.
- 57:16i just like watched the um the documentary
- 57:18right um and i was like cool like
- 57:20i watched a couple of episodes and stuff
- 57:22like that but um i was like i
- 57:25don't know if this is real but i'll
- 57:26whatever i'll take it because what's
- 57:29what's the worst thing that can happen
- 57:30right so he's like great send me your
- 57:32email i'll set it up and then from
- 57:34there i got um set up with the
- 57:37interview i met the casting director he
- 57:38was super nice he's like listen like
- 57:41you know, we saw you, you perform great.
- 57:43You're not going to the games, obviously.
- 57:45And we're going to start filming like in
- 57:47August.
- 57:48So can you be ready?
- 57:50And I was like, yes, a hundred percent.
- 57:52He's like, great.
- 57:53This could be overseas.
- 57:54Do you have a passport?
- 57:55And I was like,
- 57:56yeah so he's like okay cool like we're
- 57:58and then you know we go through everything
- 58:00he's like hey for the sake of um
- 58:02formalities like i'm gonna have to do like
- 58:04uh basically it's like a one minute video
- 58:07of like a like an interview type of
- 58:09video where he's like i'm gonna splice
- 58:10like video clips and pictures and stuff
- 58:12like that explaining yourself and then i i
- 58:14present it to like the the higher ups
- 58:16right so he's like i'm gonna do that
- 58:19i'll get back to you
- 58:20so do that get back to me he's
- 58:22like okay we're like august september
- 58:24we're gonna go it's gonna be in the
- 58:26uk because they have gladiators over there
- 58:30it's really big so we're gonna fly you
- 58:31guys out to this the uk it's gonna
- 58:33be like in random random sheffield um
- 58:38and you guys are going to do that.
- 58:40Are you still game?
- 58:41And I'm like, for sure.
- 58:42So he's like, cool.
- 58:43Like,
- 58:43we're going to move you on to the
- 58:44next stuff.
- 58:44And like,
- 58:45obviously I have to go through all like
- 58:46the, the contract stuff and like,
- 58:47you know, the NDA things.
- 58:51And then it turns into like, okay,
- 58:53well now we're going to push it out
- 58:54to the fall.
- 58:55And then it's like,
- 58:56now we're going to push out to January
- 58:58and now we're going to push out,
- 58:59you know, here.
- 58:59So like,
- 59:00it kind of was like one of those
- 59:00things where like,
- 59:01they kind of kept like going like, Hey,
- 59:03it's going to get pushed.
- 59:03Are you still, are you still game?
- 59:05It's going to get pushed.
- 59:06You still game.
- 59:07And so it was like one of those
- 59:08things where like in TV,
- 59:09like you never actually know if it's going
- 59:10to happen or not.
- 59:11Like they have this idea and they're like,
- 59:14we're casting and stuff and we have this.
- 59:17But like,
- 59:17it just seems like everybody has their own
- 59:19agenda and nobody knows what's going on.
- 59:21So I just kept like going through this.
- 59:23I kept meeting like producers and I kept
- 59:25interviewing with people and they were
- 59:26just doing all that stuff.
- 59:28And then eventually it got to a point
- 59:29where it was like.
- 59:31early spring and things were starting to
- 59:33finally come together and then they're
- 59:35like we're actually not going to go to
- 59:36the uk it actually might be in georgia
- 59:39and then it was just kidding it's not
- 59:40gonna be in georgia it's gonna be in
- 59:42france and we're like okay so it it
- 59:46all like kind of happened like slow and
- 59:48then all of a sudden it was like
- 59:50we need this and this and this and
- 59:51this from you and we're going to be
- 59:53shooting it in june
- 59:56And you need to give us all the
- 59:57stuff to us, like, right now.
- 59:58And we need to figure out your trip.
- 1:00:00And we need to figure out all this
- 1:00:01whatever.
- 1:00:02And, like,
- 1:00:03I was actually given the opportunity to
- 1:00:04pick which season I wanted to be on.
- 1:00:07And I was just like, you know what?
- 1:00:09Let's just go season one.
- 1:00:10Like, let's just do that.
- 1:00:11Yeah, there we go.
- 1:00:15And so...
- 1:00:17I was like, all right,
- 1:00:18I'll be on season one because like part
- 1:00:19of me was also like,
- 1:00:20let's just get it done in June because
- 1:00:22like the season two was going to be
- 1:00:24filmed going into like July.
- 1:00:25And I wanted to be back here for
- 1:00:27in like July for some trips I had.
- 1:00:29And, um,
- 1:00:31Yeah.
- 1:00:32So I think like two weeks from being
- 1:00:35flown out is when I finally got all
- 1:00:37the information,
- 1:00:38all the itinerary and everything.
- 1:00:39And even then it was just very like
- 1:00:41convoluted.
- 1:00:41So a really long process took about a
- 1:00:45year from the start of interest and like
- 1:00:49interviewing to actually going to France
- 1:00:51to film it.
- 1:00:52And like I said,
- 1:00:53the reason why I was in France is
- 1:00:54because the UK was filming their seasons
- 1:00:57and
- 1:00:57France had picked up that they wanted to
- 1:00:59do it.
- 1:01:00They moved all the equipment to France and
- 1:01:02like, it was probably this little town,
- 1:01:04like, thirty minutes outside of Paris.
- 1:01:08They were doing that.
- 1:01:09So instead of, like,
- 1:01:09moving all the equipment to the US,
- 1:01:12they just moved us to France.
- 1:01:13And then after we filmed,
- 1:01:15they just moved all the equipment back to
- 1:01:17the UK because they were on their third
- 1:01:18season.
- 1:01:18So, yeah, it was wild.
- 1:01:21It was really wild.
- 1:01:22Lived in a two star hotel with my
- 1:01:24husband and my toddler for two and a
- 1:01:26half weeks.
- 1:01:27no air conditioning no ice no deodorant
- 1:01:34everybody was so sm not like me like
- 1:01:39me but like the european people hundred
- 1:01:43percent it's wild it's wild so it was
- 1:01:47hot and wild so did it film as
- 1:01:51like we watched it or did you do
- 1:01:53different parts at different times
- 1:01:55Okay.
- 1:01:56So it's really fun to talk about this
- 1:01:58because we got there and we did basically
- 1:02:04four.
- 1:02:05So first day was all the story time,
- 1:02:09like story land stuff.
- 1:02:10So like they do like all your B
- 1:02:12roll filming, your interviews,
- 1:02:14your green screen photos.
- 1:02:15So you're, you know,
- 1:02:16like all the poses and stuff.
- 1:02:18You fit for your uniform.
- 1:02:21You get fitted for like your safety
- 1:02:22equipment.
- 1:02:24And then you're just kind of like all
- 1:02:26day long, like going through this stuff.
- 1:02:27Yeah.
- 1:02:28This was at like eight o'clock in the
- 1:02:30morning after a really horrible red eye.
- 1:02:37So everything I'm just like so puffy and
- 1:02:39tired and those poor makeup people are
- 1:02:41just going at you all day long.
- 1:02:45Yeah, so you do all that stuff.
- 1:02:47And then the next day,
- 1:02:49because there's so many of us,
- 1:02:50they had to do that.
- 1:02:51And then from there,
- 1:02:53we did like three days of training.
- 1:02:57And so the training just was basically
- 1:02:59looking like,
- 1:03:00here's all the games and events.
- 1:03:01Here's how they're going to run.
- 1:03:03You get one touch on everything.
- 1:03:06So you get one touch on a lot
- 1:03:07of the things that you're going to be
- 1:03:08doing.
- 1:03:08You don't know what you're going to be
- 1:03:09doing.
- 1:03:10And also, by the way,
- 1:03:12you will have a person trying to attack
- 1:03:14you or chase you or something.
- 1:03:16So all of your training is just like,
- 1:03:18I'm just getting a feel for what this
- 1:03:19is like,
- 1:03:20but I don't actually know what this is
- 1:03:21going to be like in the moment.
- 1:03:23where the gladiators were there like a
- 1:03:24week before and they're just beating the
- 1:03:26shit out of each other and they're
- 1:03:29practicing techniques and they're on all
- 1:03:31the stuff and they got a training program
- 1:03:34and they're going all these different
- 1:03:35places and they're like because they're
- 1:03:37supposed to be like yeah we're
- 1:03:40like we know this like the back of
- 1:03:42our hand we're gonna destroy these
- 1:03:43contenders right so like i'm not a
- 1:03:45gladiator i was a contender and that was
- 1:03:48the other thing they originally were
- 1:03:49trying to cast me as a gladiator but
- 1:03:52i was too short so i'm five two
- 1:03:54and they're like we need somebody who's
- 1:03:56like five seven five eight six foot
- 1:03:59preferably because they want these people
- 1:04:01to be larger than life and they are
- 1:04:03massive massive people and that's why like
- 1:04:07I always think about myself, and I'm like,
- 1:04:09Danny Spiegel and I are the same height,
- 1:04:12weight.
- 1:04:13No, not even close.
- 1:04:14I saw us next to each other,
- 1:04:15and I'm like, dang, girl.
- 1:04:18I've competed against her in CrossFit,
- 1:04:20but on that stage,
- 1:04:22actually seeing us next to each other in
- 1:04:23screenshots, I'm like, holy crap.
- 1:04:26She mopped me.
- 1:04:27She put me through a blender during some
- 1:04:30events.
- 1:04:30I had no chance.
- 1:04:34So since you brought that up,
- 1:04:36that's the start of my grievance.
- 1:04:37Yeah, okay.
- 1:04:37Okay.
- 1:04:41So for those who have not watched,
- 1:04:44spoiler alert,
- 1:04:45plug your ears if you don't want to
- 1:04:46know this.
- 1:04:47Yeah.
- 1:04:48Bailey makes the finals.
- 1:04:51The final episode,
- 1:04:53three people make the finals.
- 1:04:55They cut it down to two.
- 1:04:58There's one game where
- 1:05:03It's like a round ring type thing,
- 1:05:06and the first person thrown out is
- 1:05:09eliminated, and the other two move on,
- 1:05:11correct?
- 1:05:12Yeah.
- 1:05:12Something like that.
- 1:05:14Yeah.
- 1:05:15So, yeah, how it works,
- 1:05:16it's bracket style, right?
- 1:05:18So you start off with the prelims.
- 1:05:20We narrow it down from twenty-four
- 1:05:22contenders to twelve contenders,
- 1:05:24and then twelve to...
- 1:05:26uh i think it's like six or so
- 1:05:28and then we go down to like three
- 1:05:31um and it was one of those things
- 1:05:33where like i don't think they did this
- 1:05:36in the original series um i think it's
- 1:05:39probably because they just had more people
- 1:05:41the this is my grievance and so you'll
- 1:05:44probably be like yeah i i'm right for
- 1:05:46having this grievance where the way that
- 1:05:49it's filmed you're not seeing like it's
- 1:05:52not going
- 1:05:54Continuity wise,
- 1:05:55we're filming certain things on certain
- 1:05:57days and certain people are doing certain
- 1:06:00things.
- 1:06:01For instance, I did my prelim first.
- 1:06:04Everything I did in France was first.
- 1:06:07I was the first person to run an
- 1:06:09event.
- 1:06:09I was the first day to do it.
- 1:06:11And so I just got all of it
- 1:06:13done on Friday.
- 1:06:16then the next group of people did their
- 1:06:18saturday you have a blackout day sunday
- 1:06:20nobody works and then monday the other
- 1:06:22group goes and then how it like those
- 1:06:25were the three the three events so yes
- 1:06:27i'm doing all three events in one day
- 1:06:30they're not done the way that they were
- 1:06:32shown so my first event um was the
- 1:06:36wall which they showed that way my second
- 1:06:38event was actually the edge so that like
- 1:06:41crisscross um
- 1:06:43balance beam and my third event was
- 1:06:45actually gauntlet so where i was like
- 1:06:47running through the people and everyone's
- 1:06:49like oh my god you like we're destroying
- 1:06:50them i was like yeah because i was
- 1:06:51so mad because i had no points accumulate
- 1:06:54that whole day there was a lot of
- 1:06:56like weirdness with like am i trying to
- 1:07:00be forced out like thing like there was
- 1:07:02a little bit of conspiracy and then it
- 1:07:04was like i had gone against this girl
- 1:07:07who had a perfect score of all the
- 1:07:09contenders
- 1:07:11I had the most,
- 1:07:13the biggest discrepancy of point total.
- 1:07:16So like your point total put in half
- 1:07:19is the amount of time that you either
- 1:07:21get a headstart or you're delayed in the
- 1:07:23eliminator run.
- 1:07:24So I had the largest,
- 1:07:26I had the largest amount of time for
- 1:07:29my eliminator run.
- 1:07:30So like she had a,
- 1:07:33the girl that I was against had like,
- 1:07:37ten seconds on me to run the eliminator
- 1:07:39which is huge right because it's like a
- 1:07:41it's like a minute long um event and
- 1:07:48i i did end up beating her right
- 1:07:50so that was cool and it was really
- 1:07:51emotional
- 1:07:54The travelator.
- 1:07:54Yeah,
- 1:07:55it's a it's a it's a forty five
- 1:07:56degree incline treadmill going at eight
- 1:07:59miles an hour.
- 1:08:00So it's really it's really rough.
- 1:08:04Like it is one of the hardest things
- 1:08:07like I've ever done.
- 1:08:08And there's nothing that replicates it
- 1:08:10because we were trying to do it in
- 1:08:11the gym.
- 1:08:12And the incline of like a regular
- 1:08:14treadmill is.
- 1:08:16I goes up to like.
- 1:08:16Fifteen degrees or something.
- 1:08:18It's not.
- 1:08:19Yeah.
- 1:08:20And it was like.
- 1:08:20There's just.
- 1:08:21It's just.
- 1:08:22And it's.
- 1:08:23Looks longer on TV.
- 1:08:24It's much shorter.
- 1:08:25But it is just.
- 1:08:27Right up there.
- 1:08:29Yeah.
- 1:08:29So I end up beating her out.
- 1:08:31Did.
- 1:08:32And this is where it gets bad.
- 1:08:33So like this.
- 1:08:34The semis.
- 1:08:35Right.
- 1:08:37You do all your three events.
- 1:08:39And the way it was filmed again.
- 1:08:41Was.
- 1:08:43um oh that was like six four six
- 1:08:47of us we did our events i'm trying
- 1:08:52to think all i know is i did
- 1:08:56my three events plus the eliminator so
- 1:09:00everybody else who is competing did their
- 1:09:03three events rested and then got to do
- 1:09:07their elimination runs
- 1:09:09myself and a couple other contenders had
- 1:09:11to do all three events plus the
- 1:09:13elimination run on the same day so we're
- 1:09:15going from eight in the morning till ten
- 1:09:17o'clock at night and it is it's long
- 1:09:20it's a long freaking day and like the
- 1:09:23next day was filming of the finals so
- 1:09:26it's like okay i'm back at the hotel
- 1:09:28it's eleven o'clock at night i gotta be
- 1:09:29back there filming again at nine in the
- 1:09:31morning like everyone else has had the
- 1:09:34time to do their three events
- 1:09:36rest and then just the elimination like
- 1:09:38they all they had to do was the
- 1:09:39elimination that day and uh my last event
- 1:09:45before the elimination run was the ring so
- 1:09:47that like um event you're talking about
- 1:09:50and i like
- 1:09:52did well right because it's just the
- 1:09:53regular limit it's the regular event of
- 1:09:56the ring so it's just like pressing the
- 1:09:57button but i'm getting beaten to and just
- 1:10:02smacked around by this girl who's like six
- 1:10:04foot one and then i gotta do the
- 1:10:06elimination run and i do that i'm
- 1:10:07exhausted i'm tired i go back to the
- 1:10:09hotel and the next morning they announced
- 1:10:11hey
- 1:10:12the sudden death is the ring and me
- 1:10:15and the other guy who made it out
- 1:10:17that that day look at each other and
- 1:10:18we just started crying and we're like oh
- 1:10:21my god we have to do this again
- 1:10:23and he's like you know soaking wet he's
- 1:10:26like and these guys are like and it's
- 1:10:31just so bad and we're like really upset
- 1:10:34we're like we're just like okay maybe we
- 1:10:36can just like
- 1:10:38get it together.
- 1:10:39We did this last night.
- 1:10:40Maybe we can just like find it within
- 1:10:42ourselves to do it again.
- 1:10:44And it just so happens myself and him
- 1:10:46were the ones who got eliminated.
- 1:10:48And again, I'm not,
- 1:10:50I'm going to upset some people,
- 1:10:52but I've been, I've been on Reddit.
- 1:10:56That upsets me even more because it was
- 1:10:59very obvious watching the show that Danny
- 1:11:03was the most athletic.
- 1:11:05Yeah.
- 1:11:06the most athletic gladiator on the floor.
- 1:11:12So for that ring and the elimination
- 1:11:14sudden death,
- 1:11:15you get pitted against her one-on-one.
- 1:11:18Yeah,
- 1:11:18and they weren't even supposed to have her
- 1:11:20against me.
- 1:11:21That was a last-minute change-out.
- 1:11:24So they...
- 1:11:27And my conspiracy theory is CrossFitters
- 1:11:30keep winning these events,
- 1:11:31like Titan Games...
- 1:11:34broken skull all that right they did not
- 1:11:37want crossfitters to win right and that
- 1:11:40you kind of see that with like the
- 1:11:42the dynamic with the guys too right that
- 1:11:45was yep that's my next point so you
- 1:11:48have to go up against the best gladiator
- 1:11:50in the sudden death it's it's one event
- 1:11:53and you're done and you were you showed
- 1:11:57a capacity to be able to compete with
- 1:11:58any of those other contenders
- 1:12:01right yeah there was on the men's side
- 1:12:03the guy actually wins the crossfitter wins
- 1:12:07and they dq him for stepping on a
- 1:12:09line
- 1:12:10Well, we were talking about that after,
- 1:12:13because they would let us watch certain
- 1:12:15events,
- 1:12:15and then they would not let us watch
- 1:12:17certain events.
- 1:12:17We had handlers around.
- 1:12:19And I remember one of the contenders got
- 1:12:23to watch it,
- 1:12:25who was already eliminated at that point.
- 1:12:26And so they were like,
- 1:12:28you guys will never guess what happened.
- 1:12:30You'll never guess the outcome of what
- 1:12:31happened.
- 1:12:32And when we found out that the guy
- 1:12:36who won got DQ'd,
- 1:12:38it was one of those things where there
- 1:12:39was like, how did this happen?
- 1:12:41Like,
- 1:12:42because the DQing was that he stepped on
- 1:12:45the middle mat running up the travelator.
- 1:12:48And it's like, it's a wide surface.
- 1:12:50So like,
- 1:12:51you have to really go out of your
- 1:12:52way to step like on either side.
- 1:12:55And it was,
- 1:12:56I was talking to the one guy who
- 1:12:57got eliminated with me.
- 1:12:59and he's like that guy like talks to
- 1:13:01himself like there's no way that he up
- 1:13:05that hard like there's no way and so
- 1:13:08we kind of have this like conspiracy of
- 1:13:10like did he get paid off for this
- 1:13:13like type of thing like what's happening
- 1:13:15here you know like it's it's just those
- 1:13:17things like and then there were there were
- 1:13:18some gladiators who also had like their
- 1:13:20own thoughts when it came to that because
- 1:13:23it's a game,
- 1:13:24but they can like kind of sway how
- 1:13:26the game works.
- 1:13:27They can't necessarily like do it.
- 1:13:30Like they can't just outwardly do it,
- 1:13:33but they can kind of like push and
- 1:13:34encourage certain things.
- 1:13:36And I'm sure they did.
- 1:13:38And again, yeah,
- 1:13:39it's for entertainment purposes.
- 1:13:40They will push stories.
- 1:13:42And some stories are better than I was
- 1:13:43like,
- 1:13:45there is a crossfitter i won't name any
- 1:13:47names who was on season two who got
- 1:13:50cast as a contender went all the way
- 1:13:52to france and they decided that they
- 1:13:55didn't like his storyline and so they made
- 1:13:58him an alternate last minute and they took
- 1:14:02an alternate and put that person in
- 1:14:04instead and it was just like
- 1:14:07Wait, what?
- 1:14:08Like, and they were like,
- 1:14:09if I knew this was going to happen,
- 1:14:11I wouldn't have come out here.
- 1:14:12But now I have to be here for
- 1:14:13however long because I now I'm an
- 1:14:15alternate.
- 1:14:16And they moved the alternate to my
- 1:14:17position because they wanted a better
- 1:14:19storyline.
- 1:14:20So, like, it kind of comes down to,
- 1:14:21like, how you present yourself,
- 1:14:24what they think America will like,
- 1:14:26how you're perceived and everything.
- 1:14:27Like,
- 1:14:28and they will typecast you into a role.
- 1:14:30So, like, I always get, like, the, like,
- 1:14:31oh, you're the goth girl and stuff.
- 1:14:33And I'm like, you're not wrong.
- 1:14:34But, like, at the same time, like...
- 1:14:37I'm not like,
- 1:14:38I'm not going out there performing Fran
- 1:14:40and like black lipstick and like in a
- 1:14:43platform, you know, combat boots.
- 1:14:46To back up your storyline about that,
- 1:14:49the crossfitting male was an alternate and
- 1:14:52just by chance got into the game.
- 1:14:55Yeah.
- 1:14:56And it's also like the,
- 1:14:57if you're an alternate for American
- 1:14:59gladiators,
- 1:14:59there is a high probability you're going
- 1:15:01in because the amount of injuries that
- 1:15:03happen on that show are insane.
- 1:15:05Insane.
- 1:15:07I didn't realize it was going to be
- 1:15:09that combative.
- 1:15:10Like I knew it was going to be
- 1:15:12something.
- 1:15:12And my mom was like,
- 1:15:13what if you get hurt?
- 1:15:14I'm like, no mom, it's fine.
- 1:15:15We've got like helmets and knee pads and
- 1:15:17mouth guards.
- 1:15:18It's going to be fine.
- 1:15:18No, no, no.
- 1:15:20No.
- 1:15:21There was people who had to get surgery.
- 1:15:22They had to be wheelchaired out.
- 1:15:26It was a lot more hands-on than I
- 1:15:29anticipated.
- 1:15:30Yeah.
- 1:15:31Yeah.
- 1:15:32The one thing about CrossFit,
- 1:15:33I know Colton Mertens wants it,
- 1:15:35but it's not a contact sport.
- 1:15:38Wait, I have to talk about this.
- 1:15:41I now know why Colton Mertens wants this.
- 1:15:44Because I was staying with him in the
- 1:15:47Proven House this past weekend in Dallas.
- 1:15:49And this man, we were watching,
- 1:15:52what do you even call it?
- 1:15:53It's like World Slap Championships?
- 1:15:57Yeah.
- 1:15:57power slap yep yeah and he's like he
- 1:16:00put it on and he's like yeah i
- 1:16:01watch this like every night and we were
- 1:16:03like amazed like the amount of money these
- 1:16:06people make and he knew all the rules
- 1:16:08he taught like told us all the background
- 1:16:10of stuff and i was like damn like
- 1:16:11this is crazy and i just was thinking
- 1:16:15like if i got yeah if i got
- 1:16:17slapped
- 1:16:18I don't know.
- 1:16:19I would be really mad, but yeah,
- 1:16:21these people,
- 1:16:21these people make a lot of money and
- 1:16:23they got, they've got like weight classes.
- 1:16:26They've got backstories.
- 1:16:28They've got sponsors.
- 1:16:30Like it's wild.
- 1:16:31And he knew all about it and he's
- 1:16:32just like watching it.
- 1:16:32And I'm like, okay, this, this tracks.
- 1:16:35It makes sense now.
- 1:16:37Yeah.
- 1:16:39That absolutely tracks that Colton Mertens
- 1:16:41watches power slap and knows everything.
