- 0:01SPEAKER_01: Welcome home, Hear Us Now, a podcast of the Union Gospel Mission of Tarrant County, a space for all of us seeking what's real and sacred in a world that rushes past the soul.
- 0:13SPEAKER_02: I'm Eric Engelman, a volunteer at UGMTC, and your co-host, President and CEO of UGMTC, Charles Wolford.
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: Well, hello.
- 0:23SPEAKER_01: This is Eric Engelman.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: I'm in the studio at Union Gospel Mission, Tarrant County, and across the table from me is my co-host, Charles Wolford.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: How are you, sir?
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Eric, hello, my friend and my brother.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: What a joy it is to be back home at the Welcome Home Podcast.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Today, uh, this is going to be about you.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: We want to get our listening audience and give them an opportunity to get to know this amazing gift of God that you are, Eric Engelman.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: So that's worth an applause right there.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: Okay, here it comes.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Thank you, Jesus, for what you've done for me.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: So to our listening audience, you've heard uh the voice that's resonating across these airways in the Welcome Home podcast of Eric Engelman.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: But I wanted to spend a little bit time of time for our listening audience to get to know who Eric Engelman is a little bit more.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: And so, what better opportunities just to share in this dialogue and jump right in if you've been listening?
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: One thing that you may not be aware of and may have not known, Eric Engelman is the also the host of another podcast, Gospel According to the Rock.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: And so we're grateful for the gift that you are and how you've offered your gifts and talents to Union Gospel Mission and sharing with us.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: So God bless you, real good.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: So let's jump right in with both feet.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: Let's start with your podcast and w how how has this ministry uh what what was God doing with you to one start gospel according to the rock and for the uh the opportunity that's that afforded for you.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Let's start there and then I want to back into that just a little bit more conversations about who Eric is, but let's start with gospel according to the rock and we'll see where that leads us.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: Well, uh you and I were talking uh before we started recording a little bit about authenticity.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: Part of my life was spent knowing that I had the truth and speaking the word of God and doing a lot of things that I do now, but with a something of a different heart.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: I've discovered, I am discovering, that there are some things about authenticity and about being quiet and hearing God that could have been transforming me as a husband, as a father, and some areas in my life that went south.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: So this authenticity as we talk through you and what God has been calling you to do, so it has and was the podcast part of that journey for your authenticity.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: Well, yes.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Um being in large groups at church was good, necessary.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: I learned some scripture, but at the same time, weeks after I started confessing, Jesus, I met with a man in Intervsity Christian Fellowship, Steve Simon.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: He got into some one-on-one meetings.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: And so all along in my in my time saying I'm following the Lord, there were examples of something like what you and I are doing right now, okay, talking about the life of God.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: And for me, starting a podcast is actually a way to maybe have some of that intimate interaction with somebody who might be interested in what I have or what my guest and I have to say.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: So part so part of your impetus, if I'm hearing you correctly, was really based upon a more intimate setting that you were desiring to unpack the word of God.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: And it seems like the trajectory of that started with Intervars City Ministries and some gentleman that you had a chance to just spend some more intimate time with that I'm assuming then led to a deeper dive into the word of God.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Is that an accurate summation of that?
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: And then so that then birthed what would be your podcast and and just being able to dialogue a little bit more gospel according to the rock, is that kind of the thing the thing that I'm hearing?
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: In small groups, you're you're encouraged to not hog the microphone.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: Um So how do you do that?
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm not necessarily uh the world's best, but I have learned a little bit about maybe thinking about what I want to say, saying it succinctly.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: Not talking about, you know, my neighbor's doll barking in the middle of the night again.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: Can you believe that?
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: Um There are times for good stories, yeah.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: But ultimately, people get transformed when they can do much like what we're doing here.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: They can speak, they can hear their own voice, they can hear themselves talking about what they think, but they can also listen to where other people are, what their needs are.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: And so now, how long have you been doing your podcast, Gospel According to the Rock?
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: Gospel according to the rock, I believe I've been doing it about four years.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: About four years.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Amazing.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Again, share with the public where they can find Gospel According to the Rock if they wanted to hear your podcast.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: Take the words Gospel according to the rock.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: Now, if you put spaces between those words in your search for that, you won't get it.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: You will get Dwayne Johnson.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: So the way to fix that is to get rid of the spaces.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: Gospel according to the rock.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: And if you look for that in any web browser, I should show up there in the spacing.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Gospel according to the rock.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Oh, no spacing.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: All right, we're audio.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: You have an assignment to uh you've given an assignment to our listening audience for our neighbors to be able to do that.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: Well, praise be to the Lord.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: Let's let me let me also just uh talk to the audience a little bit and just say uh as you listen, you know, please uh please think about and share whatever it is God has with those around you.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: And even if it's, you know, I listen to this guy at Gospel according to the rock, I think he's way off base.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: What do you think?
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: Um there's there I think there's a value in that.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: Well, you you know, the value in that that's where you and I met.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: You reached out to me and uh you you said, you know, Charles, I have this podcast, I would love for you to share and sit on our podcast, and God f uh allowed that to happen where we not necessarily on the studio, we were in the conference room at UGM uh with some handheld mics, and you were portable and gave an opportunity for us to discuss.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: And that really is where the podcast of Welcome Home uh hear us now, where it was birthed, out of that conversation dialogue, and uh us continuously being in prayer.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: So I'm eternally grateful to you and your reaching out to me, and now here it is almost a year later, God has allowed us to be a part of this wonderful podcast.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Let's let's also hear just a little bit more about Eric Engelman.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: What would be uh the thing that you would want our listening audience to know about you?
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: You are a podcaster.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Uh you are what else?
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: Well, I I I guess I could run through my life real fast.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: Um I uh I uh was uh born 1957.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: I'm closing in on my 70th birthday and not too far away.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: Amen.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: Praise God.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: I guess my 69th will be this this month.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Wow, wow.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: And um Wow.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: Can can I just press pause here and just say, you know, you look amazing.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: You God has preserved you and you look very well.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: Well well praise God uh and thank you.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: And my wife takes good care of you.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: Well, there you go.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: And and your wife your wife's name is Annette.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: Annette.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: Hello, Annette.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: We say hi to you and our listening audience, we thank you for taking care of Eric.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: She does.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: And once in a while she'll she'll also edit a uh podcast, but mostly she just says you publish it, and I'll tell you what I think.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: But you wonder afterwards.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: So to your union uh with you and your you and Annette, tell us a little bit more about your family.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: Well, uh Annette is my second wife.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: My my first wife and I have seven kids.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: Um my first wife has passed on.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: Oh and uh there are uh marriages end in different ways.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: Ours was a poor, what I would say a poor end.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: And um anyway, I have uh seven kids and they are now kind of scattered throughout.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: Um some of them fled Texas because of the heat.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: Others are still around.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: So you have seven children now, at one point I believed that uh having kids was um and and I still believe it.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: I just think maybe I could have executed better.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: Um having kids was uh was something that well it I it comes back to authenticity in a way.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: And uh and recognizing uh accepting the role of father instead of fleeing it.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: So seven kids, give me six genders, how many m how many boys, how many girls?
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh three three men and four women.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: And uh an a an age span of seventeen years, I think it is.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: So a total of seventeen years between the seven of them.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: I think so.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: Your youngest is how old?
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: Um She is Is she turning thirty now?
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: Oh I'm sorry, ninety-six.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: She was born in ninety-six.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: That would make her thirty to that.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: And then the oldest would be how old?
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: Um She was born in 79.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: So she's over 45.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: And uh she she has not fled.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: So she's she did she she's okay with the heat then.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, very good.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: But I'm flying out to see the littlest one uh and go to a baby shower later this month.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: Well, good for you.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: And how and grandchildren?
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: You have any grandchildren?
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, I I love them things.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: Um, so uh we I I have a son in uh um southern Dallas, and he has well, he's had five, four surviving.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: And um and so those are all grandsons there.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: I've got uh my wife has two, and they are up in Arkansas.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: Um we've got three in Colorado.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: And and then, you know, we got we got this one coming, so it adds up to like nine or something.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: Wow, what a blessing.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: One of the one of the challenges I had, though the Lord told me uh at one point when I was about 30, he said you're gonna have problems with your memory when you get older.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: Um and so you need to memorize scripture now while you can't.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: I'm glad he told me that.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: And that has really been the start of realizing I could write my own three by five cards.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: That's why I carry three by five cards, is because uh I I learned to to memorize uh some some whole psalms, which for some people is a ho-hum, and for others is like oh.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: But they have uh, as the scripture says, those words have been my companions.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: Uh and I've really been tough on my companions in my life.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: So I'm I'm glad the word is has stayed.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: What a blessing.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: Well, let's do this.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: Let's dig in just a little bit more.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: Tell us you are a podcaster, you are a uh husband and a father to seven.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: Uh tell us a little bit about your journey as uh as a business uh a man.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: What what what type of industry have you done?
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: What what what were you doing before you became this famous podcaster?
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, famous such as it is.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: I I retired.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: I did program computers for a few decades.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: Went through various kinds of languages and revolutions around personal computers.
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: Before that, I did have a career as a spacecraft systems engineer.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: I it it was wow.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: I mean, it it was amazing.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: Okay, wait, wait, wait.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: You just took me way too fast.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: I felt like you put me on a rocket and just launched me up into the air.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: You were a spacecraft engineer.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: Spacecraft systems engineer.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: Now you've just you've you you just you've just won some medals in the uh hall of fame of Charles.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: So tell us a little bit about what does that mean.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: I th you're the first spacecraft system engineer I've ever met.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: So tell me about that.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: What does that mean?
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: I would s uh study a spacecraft.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: And the the first one I studied was the space shuttle.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: Uh I my uh job in uh in Johnson Space Center in Houston was to assist with the flight data file.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: Those are the books that astronauts carry.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: I did help check out some procedures, and I was book manager.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: I found myself working with NASA personnel on it.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: It was kind of neat.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: So so no, that's not just kind of neat.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: You're very modest, but here it is.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: It was a gift from God where I could really enjoy some things and really found out that I needed work.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: Well, this is the thing.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: I I I I become uh much more appreciative of you in every opportunity we get a chance to chat, because in your humility, who would have known that uh as they've listened to you over the weeks and months, here it is, they've been listening to an engineer.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: God bless you, real good.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: So for the purposes of the theme of this time together has been authenticity.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: So let's just unpack and we in starting our conversation, we really talked a little bit about AI, and that was uh the lead-in to some of our dialogue that we thought we would be having today.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: Uh in a nutshell, how what do you see uh in technology, given that that's been some of the world that you've uh been an expert in?
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: Uh what would what would you do as a summation, whether we were talking about Eric Schmidt uh former.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Eric Schmidt of Google.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: Of Google and some of the other uh AI experts, what where do you see us going with technology, whether it be podcasts or what have you?
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: What do you see that?
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: Grab it while you can and use it in Jesus' name.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: Grab it while you can.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: Well, and and that's not just that's not just technical.
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: I mean the technical is is gonna be marching on.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: But there are so many ways you can lose access.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: And so uh I I when I started my podcast, I did not go top of the line because I wanted to show that it's that you could grab the technology and use it.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: So grab it while you can.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: But you've just opened up another Pandora's box for us as a musician.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: I I got a chance to experience your other gift and talent is as a musician as well, correct?
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: So tell us a little bit about that.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: We just for the listening audience, uh, Eric and I were sharing uh on conversations on the bench last year in October, and we had a chance to be serenaded by one of your other gifts.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: Tell us a little bit about that part of your world.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: I um I'm told that my mother would play Tchaikovsky while I was in the womb.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: Huh.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: And my mother said she was tone-deaf.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: She'd play Tchaikovsky.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: And so somewhere uh I fell in love with the sound of a violin.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: The other part of me was, oh yeah, but you have to practice.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: Theory and reality have always needed to match up in my life.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: That's one of the things Jesus helps me with.
- 16:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: So somewhere I in my college years I heard something that I knew was tuned like a violin.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: I looked around and there's this guy strumming a uh violin with frets and it's a mandolin.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: And he was doing stuff that I had I I didn't I had hoped was possible somewhere, but it it just never clicked.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: I needed the visual cue.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: This is a mandolin.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: And uh so I I picked it up and um I have a gift for it.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: Um I also uh I well also was told at a nursing home that I could be good if I'd practice.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: How funny is that?
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: So and how long have you been playing?
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: Uh off and on.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: Fifty or wow, wow, wow.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: Well what the the commentary to that was a it's a funny commentary in that we were sitting on the bench and you brought your mandolin and you were playing it, and as we were in an interlude, the conversation continued between you and I.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: But you were asking me as you were playing, he's like, Well, you know, this is not being recorded, correct, Charles?
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: And I was not accurate because I said, no, it's not being recorded.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: But it it this is the providence of God, Eric, is it's turned out to be one of the great moments of the of our conversations on the bench.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: And with the production of that video, it is the highlight of that video of you actually playing uh the mandolin uh for us and singing uh while playing uh so another gift that you have.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: Uh well, and unless so let's go back to authenticity.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: I go to nursing home.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: Uh I go into memory units.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: And uh it it used to be early on that um some of the nurses at some of the places I visited would be amazed at how well certain patients with Alzheimer's or other uh you know dementia would sing because that part of their being was still intact.
- 18:24unknown: Wow.
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: And it's fun.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: It is fun.
- 18:27SPEAKER_01: And so so I've uh I was slow accepting that that is ministry in Jesus' name.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: Sure, sure.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: And so you know I've been challenged by others, I didn't do this automatically, find things that people sing, not what you want to play.
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: Having done that for a few decades, I just kind of shared what the ministry of the mandolin was.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: And how long have you been ministering at the nursing home?
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: I've I've been regularly min ministering at a nursing home um since before COVID.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: Um I uh maybe about 2014, I think, has been uh Wow just just a regular a regular thing.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: I I currently go to a nursing home that's within a few miles of where I live.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: And uh we we usually sing there two, three times a month.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: Well, to our listening audience, you've had a chance to be introduced to our brother and our friend, our host and uh partner in ministry, Eric Englan.
