Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: Coming up on the show today, Nick Wagner of ESPN with some great insight.
- 0:05[SPEAKER_00]: Jake Moody's been waived.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_00]: What's the physical review of Brock Perti?
- 0:10[SPEAKER_00]: What is the game one week one review of Brock Perti's performance?
- 0:13[SPEAKER_00]: The latest on George Kittles injury as well.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_00]: From Tuesday, midday, we'll get to that coming up.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_00]: We actually recorded most of this and then Moody got cut or waived.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_00]: So we came back and recorded the first part.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_00]: So what's your first?
- 0:24[SPEAKER_00]: As I was talking about Moody.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_00]: Then we'll dive in to Brock Perti and one thing we talk about in the later in the episode is we weren't quite sure how long George Kittle would be out, but as you'll hear in the first 10 minutes or so there's 15 minutes Nick has some insight as to how the four-week absence will affect
- 0:43[SPEAKER_00]: George and when it'll be back.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_00]: So that's coming up.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_00]: But first, this show today is brought to you by your friend in mine, Puesto, Mejicano, Moderna, it's back for another season of sponsorship here on the show.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_00]: They've got two locations, two stands in Levi's stadium, which is awesome.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_00]: It's fantastic Mexican food.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_00]: The Adler brothers have killed it.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_00]: And they're huge 49er fans too, but the food is so good.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_00]: I've been telling you about it for years.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody who goes, tells me, sends me a message and says, oh, yeah, guy, that was awesome.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_00]: So you'll enjoy it.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: The Margarita's are fantastic and fresh.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_00]: The tacos are...
- 1:21[SPEAKER_00]: World class, the lobster, the shrimp taco, the short rib case of birie taco, filet minion, on and on and on.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_00]: They've got great appetizers.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_00]: They've got the crispy melted cheese, the fried fish taco.

- 1:38[SPEAKER_00]: It's also refreshing.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to love it.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_00]: Two locations in the Bay Area, one in Concord, one in Santa Clara, plus the two stands in Levi Stadium, so week three, you want to go there.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_00]: if you're going to the game or any game you're going to this year and then so call as well so Orange County, La Jolla appreciate Plesto sponsoring the show.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_00]: Let's get into the conversation here with Nick Wagner.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_01]: They had to do it.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_01]: Honestly, and I know a lot of people after Kyle Shanahan on Sunday initially said no question that he's going to be the kicker this week.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_01]: I think people kind of freaked out at that and didn't did it.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_01]: stay tuned for the ensuing tweets when he was asked follow-ups about Jake Moody and why there would be no question.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_01]: He kind of left the door open and then I thought it was pretty clear on Monday when he was asked about it that they were going to probably do something here.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_01]: Now I didn't necessarily know he's going to be way, but you know there was a lot of different ways they could go by bringing a practice squad or whatever, but I just think it's reached a point when you got a guy who is
- 2:40[SPEAKER_01]: you just can't keep looking your team in the eye and telling them that this is their best option because Jake Moody didn't necessarily lose them any games specifically maybe you can make an argument a couple of games last year that might have turned out differently had he made a couple of field goals but regardless this was a move that had to be made and I think right now when you look around the league at the way teams are trying to figure out their kicking situations you know Atlanta has three guys and they're like you've
- 3:10[SPEAKER_01]: If you bring in a new kicker and he misses kicks, so be it, but at least it's not the guy that has been missing kicks now for, you know, half of a year.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_00]: Interesting, you know, I mean, like I always, I use the example in the preseason about Greg Joseph.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_00]: Greg Joseph wasn't, he missed four of 20 extra points last year.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_00]: That's that great, but this got to a point, the 27-yarder, the 27, you know, some of Moody's misses each.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, those 52, we don't even try it with another guy fine.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_00]: But the 27-yarder, and then you probably saw this, there was one time out where the Seahawks had the ball.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: And there was a time out on the field and moody jogs out to the field that between the hash is just to like visualize if you were to kick again, which is not normal, right?
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: Like there's a lot going on there and I feel for right?
- 3:56[SPEAKER_00]: It's because it's a lonely place.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_00]: There's no question.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_00]: It's a lonely place, but Shannon Hans reactions on television said, now the second one was a block and I don't, you know, I'm not sure is what that was.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_00]: Um, man, it's this.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, a third of it.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_01]: And to try to drive the point home further is they got into some situations of four downs that arguably they should have gone for anyway, right?
- 4:23[SPEAKER_01]: Like we could we could sit and say that, but.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_01]: In those situations, Kyle Shanahan did not even so much as glance in Jake Moody's direction.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_01]: Like it wasn't even, it was very clear even from watching up above that he wasn't considering putting Jake Moody in for what would have been makeable field goals for most guys, at least for you know, guys that you have.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_01]: complete faith in and then you kind of hear in the locker room what guys are saying and and and all that kind of stuff it just it had to be done the fact that they did it before it like legitimately cost them a game is the right move you have to be proactive with that kind of thing you can't be reactive and I think it's I think it's just one of those things that had to happen that's nothing against Jake seems like a good guy's a stand up guy generally.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_01]: face the media when he had struggles and was willing to talk about that, try to make all the changes to his kicking approach and the else even all that stuff.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_01]: But at the end of the day, it is as they say, I make her miss Lee and there have been far too many misses here of Lee.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_00]: I got texts from buddies during the preseason like, do they really, does John Lynch, do they really believe my read on it was they just felt like as long as he's the kicker, they had to say everything publicly to try and make him, to try and help his convict, like, that which is kind of a, you know, a red flag that they feel like it's that kind of tenuous situation, but that's how it felt.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_00]: What was the stat that you have on going back to last year, his percentage?
- 5:47[SPEAKER_01]: He's 12 of 23 on field goal attempts since he returned from the ankle injury, which was week 10 of last year.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_01]: So like 52.2% or whatever it is, you can check my math on that, but if you compare it to other kickers who have tried at least 10 field goals in that same span,
- 6:07[SPEAKER_01]: The next closest to him was Justin Tucker, who obviously is no longer with the Ravens, and he was 11, like over 11 percentage points higher than Jake Moody.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_01]: So that's the distance between last, where Moody ranked and second to last.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_01]: which is just a big gap and doesn't even factor in how big the gap is between the top guys or even middle of the pack guys and where moody was.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_01]: So when you're making 50% you know that's if you're doing it from 3.0 and that's great if you're doing it in 3.0 goals not so much and that's kind of what it boils down to.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_00]: I you know though as you would imagine I'm sure you're getting text from friends.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, text from, you know, like who they said, I don't know if you, the name that comes up, there's only, you know, there's one name that everybody knows and that's Justin Tucker, who's suspended for the first 10 weeks of the season.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_00]: I would, that's not something they could do today.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_00]: I would have a very hard time.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_00]: I do not imagine them even 10 weeks from now touching that situation, do you?
- 7:09[SPEAKER_01]: Well, yeah, and especially because Tucker just flat out wasn't good last year either.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_01]: Like, is he cooked?
- 7:14[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you know, there's obviously a lot more pelts on the wall there in terms of him having success previous till last year, but then you say, well, as he's struggling because of what was going on off the field, you know, all that stuff, but yeah, I'd be surprised if that was the case.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's funny to a lot of people always say, well, you can just pull a guy off the street and find a kicker and he's like, well, if that was true, then everyone
- 7:37[SPEAKER_01]: There are a lot of guys out there, you know, there's some stories around the league right now of guys who nobody, I think Brandon Aubrey and Dallas was not a guy that people knew.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_01]: Jake Bates into Troy was kicking in the XFL UFO, whatever it's called now and having having a lot of success before the Lions got in and so you can find these guys.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the Jaguars with the guy that made the 70 yarder of whatever in the, in the preseason.
- 8:01[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so there are at least, you know, in those guys, you don't know what they're going to be until you give them a shot, and so there is uncertainty there, but it's uncertainty that can go either way, right?
- 8:12[SPEAKER_01]: Like, with Jake Moody, it was like, well, there's uncertainty, but it's like, you're worried that he's going to miss it, whereas you would like a guy who come in, like, well, maybe he can make that.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe, maybe this is, you know, what in his wheelhouse.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_01]: So, um, to me, like I said, I think the big thing is is you'd rather have a guy who
- 8:29[SPEAKER_01]: You take just taking a shot and see if he can make it and rather than a guy who like every time he goes out there you're holding your breath thinking that he's going to miss it.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I'll give you one last thing on the moody topic.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_00]: And tell me what you think about this.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_00]: The NFL kicking game is different than when the Niners drafted him.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_00]: And you mentioned the long kicks.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_00]: They've changed the ball on that they allow now for the kickers to use worked in balls.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_00]: And there's a theory that that's why we're seeing more kickers make big kicks, is because they're not using the cable that's fresh out of the quote unquote fresh out of the box.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_00]: They're just like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady and these guys like to,
- 9:04[SPEAKER_00]: you know, manipulate kind of a workshop all in.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_00]: That because now the kickers can use balls that are more worked in, they can make longer kicks because they're not as stiff and football.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_00]: And if that's the case, then a guy, you know, part of the reason you drive, what he's like, he's going to have a bigger leg than most, you know, I wonder, would rob you golds range be a little longer now with a worked in ball.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_00]: Like the night as you're saying, we just need a guy to hit singles.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_00]: And if that means we got to go for it fourth and two that we used to be feel going right so be it.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_00]: What do you think of that theory that I got with a big leg?
- 9:35[SPEAKER_00]: It has a little less separation now with a worked in cable.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_01]: I think I think it's an interesting it's an interesting theory.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_01]: And and I think that the thing is is you see these guys with the big leg who maybe aren't so accurate.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_01]: You know Joey slide.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_01]: If you remember he had a brief
- 9:57[SPEAKER_01]: and he could kick the ball a mile, but he was kind of scattered shot all over the place a little bit.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_01]: But I also think that sometimes, you know, I had a long conversation, I wrote a story about moody and the preseason, and I had a long conversation with the former Patriots Kicker Steven Gaskowski.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_01]: and Gaskowski and Moody had a lot of similarities.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: I think Gaskowski was pick 118, Moody was pick 99.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_01]: They were both replacing kind of franchise, at least as kickers go legends.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_01]: Gaskowski replaced in a military, Moody replaced in gold.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and Gaskowski struggled this first couple of years.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_01]: He had a lot of expectations and he liked Moody.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_01]: It was on a good team where you just needed to be ready to go and contribute.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_01]: right away and that's now he told me he did the same thing as Jake Moody going into his third year he switched from a three step approach to his two step approach.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_01]: Well, first Gastowski it worked.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_01]: He had a really really good I think he was an all pro his third year and then he went on to a long successful career I think he did you know and he made the point to me he said you know one thing that I had going for me is Twitter didn't exist back then.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_01]: You know, there wasn't, there wasn't a lot of the same like constant like barrage, but he's like, his advice for Jake and Rudy is like, stay off of that stuff.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_01]: Avoid it as much as you can, because he made a lot of golf analogies when we had that conversation, which is, you know, rings home for me as a, as a really terrible golfer.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_01]: And, and, and, but, but a lot of them are really accurate, you know, he was talking about kicking the ball with distance, and he was saying like, yeah, you know, the two step approach theoretically,
- 11:32[SPEAKER_01]: It'll cost you some distance, but it should make you more accurate because they're getting rid of what they call a jab step, which is that first step, and moody even talked about you said that first step is the thing that that throw them off because it's hard to be consistent with that jab step.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_01]: So it should make you more accurate.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_01]: He goes, but the distance thing, it really shouldn't change that much because it's very much like hitting driver and golf, which people think you have to swing out of your shoes to hit your driver far and really it's all about what is the angle.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_01]: That which your club is making contact with the ball is are you swinging up on the ball when you hit it.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_01]: Are you hitting the center of the club face kicking is very similar to that you got hit the ball in the right spot and so to your point.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_01]: If the ball is worked in in a way that they like and it's easier for them to hit that sweet spot on the ball, it really shouldn't make that much of a difference, which is why some of the greatest kickers in league history are small tiny guys, not necessarily the Sebastian Chicowski's of the world who come in and look like they can kick the ball through the roof of the stadium.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully this is the last re-record of the day.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_01]: Well, yeah, we got the George Kittle thing too.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_01]: So there's that's right, George is out four weeks now, right?
- 12:39[SPEAKER_01]: That's yeah, not a big surprise, but you know, 23 days from now to the Rams game that's four games in 23 days because of that Thursday night or so it puts them in a situation where
- 12:51[SPEAKER_01]: Even if it was only going to be a few weeks, it was going to be hard for him to come back that fourth game on a short week.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_01]: So I think it makes sense and also gives kid a little more time from week five to six to recover since they have that Thursday nighter.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_00]: We're yet with with the injury part of Brock party right now.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so let's go back a little bit.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_01]: First of all, the shoulder thing you could kind of see it happen when it happened.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_01]: He kind of got driven the first half.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_01]: He took a big hit and he was driven into the ground like directly on his left shoulder.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_01]: Now the good news is obviously that's not his throwing shoulder, but you know, as you still got to be able to to you know, pork your body and turn and all the things you need to do to throw and things like that.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_01]: Kyle Shanan said on Monday that the bigger concern was the toe, he was asked directly if it was turf toe, Shanan said he didn't know, my impression is that it was something at least similar to turf toe, which for people who don't know, it's like a spring toe, essentially.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_01]: And the problem here, Kai, is that if it is turf toe,
- 13:53[SPEAKER_01]: They're playing on turf again in this week in New Orleans, arguably, maybe the worst turf in the league.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_01]: At least up there amongst the worst.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that's all things that have to be taken into consideration as they go on throughout the week.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_01]: Now, with that being said,
- 14:09[SPEAKER_01]: I still didn't get the impression Kyle Shining was super concerned, at least not yet.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_01]: He kept making reference to the next 24 hours being important, so, you know, I guess we'll kind of wait and see where pretty is on Wednesday in that regard, but definitely not great.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_01]: Not what you want, and again, one of these injuries that
- 14:29[SPEAKER_01]: pops up the next day and that that happens everywhere.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_01]: I know people think it only happens and San Francisco.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_01]: It does happen everywhere.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_01]: But it seems like with the Niners, it seems to happen to guys who matter a lot more, maybe than in other places.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_01]: And when you already have George Kittledown and John Jennings down and adding Brock Pertite to the mix, I certainly understand why fans would wake up with a feeling today of here we go again.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_00]: And it's not the, you're not playing the Seahawks defensive line this coming week.
- 14:54[SPEAKER_00]: I think when you look back at this week one game against Seattle, Brock's legs were a huge factor.
- 15:01[SPEAKER_00]: Next gen stats, 60 and a half percent of his drop backs.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_00]: He faced pressure.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_00]: It's the highest pressure rate.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_00]: He's had in his career.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_00]: The left side of the 49ers line accumulated 17 of 23 pressures allowed Trent Williams.
- 15:11[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of 10 of 38 pressures, Ben Barge gave up seven pressures on 38 past, past blocks.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_00]: where a huge part of week one.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, I do think you have to give some credit to Seattle's defense of front, like those guys are excellent.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_00]: But it does create an immediate, okay, how is this offensive line Brock had to run around, can Mac Jones move like Brock can behind this offensive line if it's the same story?
- 15:40[SPEAKER_01]: And the answer is, no, the answer is no, to me, guy, the concern here, beyond the offensive line and I'm not saying that they are not culpable for their part of those stats that you just read off that there were just not a lot of receiver separation.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, if you go back and watch it,
- 16:00[SPEAKER_01]: Ricky Pierce all was creating some separation.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_01]: John Jennings before he got hurt a couple of times, but that's really not his game anyway.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_01]: He's more of a contested catch guy.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_01]: Black Perti didn't target any other receivers.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_01]: Not that they didn't have any other catches.
- 16:14[SPEAKER_01]: They weren't targeted.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_01]: So Russell Gage, Mark has well, this is all explanations for why Kendrick Borm was signed.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_01]: you know and and obviously George Kittle was supposed to be a big part of the game plan.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_01]: They didn't have him for most of the game as well.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_01]: So I think it all factors together.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_01]: And I need to go and look and see what the stat was on how long Brock Perti was holding the ball.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_01]: But I think it's all married together, right?
- 16:38[SPEAKER_01]: There is pressure of Brock Perti escapes.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_01]: Can a guy shake loose after that?
- 16:43[SPEAKER_01]: the the flip side of that being can guys get open not necessarily and then pressure comes because the offensive line can't protect for five seconds, right?
- 16:51[SPEAKER_01]: So it all it all ties together, but yeah, to your point, if it is Mac Jones, you know, Mac Jones made the joke in training camp, like what he's called a force gum for something like that, or he said, I'm not force gum.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_01]: I can't remember exactly what it was, but he was joking about running around in a
- 17:09[SPEAKER_01]: But definitely not as big a part of his game as Brock Perti who himself doesn't think of himself as a dual threat quarterback, he's definitely mobile enough to create time and and you know find opportunities to make plays like he did on the on the past to tongue just to win the game.
- 17:23[SPEAKER_01]: So a lot to be concerned about there also you make a good point that Seattle's defense.
- 17:29[SPEAKER_01]: I think is quite good, particularly their defensive line.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think the Saints are working with that same kind of personal.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_00]: No, but you're going to allow place again, you know, and I think there were a lot of nine or fancy today.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_00]: They'll probably be even a little more.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_00]: This week, Brock was 2.97 seconds time to throw, which is slow.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_00]: Slow, yeah, that's up there, that's, that's low.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_00]: And we know Brock doesn't want to be that way.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_00]: And Kyle doesn't want his offense to be that way.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_00]: I did think like, let's do the week one.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_00]: You paid the quarterback a lot of money review, though.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_00]: How did you think Brock played?
- 18:06[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I was, I had people asking me like, I, because you know, a couple years ago, I did GFF, which is like PFF, except it's just me, grading Donald and Lance throws in practice.
- 18:14[SPEAKER_01]: I trust your grades better.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what colors you used to describe them, but I trust your grades more.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I learned the PFFs that Josh Dubal taught me, the PFF system.
- 18:23[SPEAKER_00]: because I wanted it to kind of line up.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, I thought that the touchdown he threw to check Tajus, I don't know if you can check PFF directly.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_00]: My guess is they graded that a negative 0.5 throw.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_00]: It'd be my guess.
- 18:38[SPEAKER_00]: Probably.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I think he made a sort of peer saw that, I mean, it's a plus 1.5, which you only get, even the best quarterbacks in league, like two of those, a game, right, like 38 to 40 in a year, what'd you think of the way broccoli?
- 18:53[SPEAKER_01]: I thought he was okay, and I think there's a lot of ways, there's a lot of layers to the Brock Party discussion from that game just because of the things that I was just making reference to.
- 19:03[SPEAKER_01]: Like there's this dynamic where when Brock Party has all of his weapons and he does well, people don't want to give him credit, right?
- 19:11[SPEAKER_01]: But then when the opposite happens, and he doesn't have his guys and doesn't have guy, I mean, got Jay Tondis who had zero career catches,
- 19:21[SPEAKER_01]: was probably by the end of that game, at least amongst receivers and tight ends, the guy who had the most experience playing with Brockfordie on the whole roster of guys who were available.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_01]: If you're really think about it, you could argue for peer-solving peer-solving missed most of the camp last year, telling us to run the practice squad the year before.
- 19:37[SPEAKER_01]: But that just tells you,
- 19:39[SPEAKER_01]: You kind of said never caught a passer-brot per day in a game, but you probably have the most experience playing with Brot per day.
- 19:44[SPEAKER_01]: So the other side of that is, is then well, then what does he do when he doesn't have those things?
- 19:49[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what everyone's always said, and especially once you pay the guy, the argument becomes, well, can you be a, can you can you be the rising tide that lifts all the boats, right?
- 19:58[SPEAKER_01]: And he made a couple of back throws the decision, the interception to Ricky Pierce saw that he tried was just a bad decision.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_01]: You know that you throw that there was four seahawk defenders in the area.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_01]: I initially thought for my vantage point in the press box that Pierce saw came down with it.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_01]: But obviously he did not probably didn't deserve to do, but Gaussian answered after what he'd like to see Pierce saw play defensive break that thing up.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_01]: I still think you got to put that one more on perdi.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_01]: But the first interception, you know, I thought Ernest Jones made a good play for one, two.
- 20:27[SPEAKER_01]: That's a throw.
- 20:27[SPEAKER_01]: We've seen Brock Pertilayer in to draw on Jennings many, many times over the middle.
- 20:33[SPEAKER_01]: Just the fact that he was off of his back foot.
- 20:36[SPEAKER_01]: I thought was a little odd.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_01]: It was just kind of like he didn't get his fundamentals on that.
- 20:40[SPEAKER_01]: But
- 20:42[SPEAKER_01]: then eat delivers.
- 20:43[SPEAKER_01]: When the games on the line in a tough game where you don't have your guys, there's injuries, you've been kind of knocking on the door and you've been moving the ball, but you haven't been able to finish drives.
- 20:53[SPEAKER_01]: He gets it done.
- 20:53[SPEAKER_01]: He makes the best throw that he made all day.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's the one you're referring to.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_01]: The double move to Pierce all down the sideline was right on the money.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_01]: He, he also, I thought, did a good job of adapting on the fly.
- 21:05[SPEAKER_01]: Once they lost Kittle and when Jennings has gone, you know, I think he was almost perfect targeting tight ends and running backs.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_01]: And the adults, the defense wants you to do that anyway.
- 21:15[SPEAKER_01]: They want you to throw underneath and then rally to the ball.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_01]: But sometimes you just gotta take what they give you and he did.
- 21:21[SPEAKER_01]: And so I certainly understand why people will look at the touch down to time just and say, he got lucky.
- 21:27[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, maybe there's an element of that for sure.
- 21:30[SPEAKER_01]: There's also something to be said for trust in your guy in that situation.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_01]: You got to make a play.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_01]: And so Not not his best game by any means, but but definitely one that I think the people who keep pounding the table for Brock to lead to come back late in the game and again, you got to get credit for it.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_01]: You can't take it away just because you didn't like the way it looks when it happened.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_01]: So it's a little bit of everything I guess is the long-winded way to say it.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think nobody plays, you know, Brian, we're in this, we're in this is the bubble.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_00]: We're in it.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_00]: So every throw is hyper, you know, we're hyper focused on it all and it's fair.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_00]: Like I don't, I'm not one of those people that says like it's not.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_00]: And the debate why are we still debating it's like Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson get debated.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_00]: What do we like, you know, he's not immune, like.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_00]: but I do think and and I am not let me be very clear because people say like well you wouldn't get mad at my homes if he did that's like yeah well okay talked to me into super bulls right you gotta have the pelts on the wall for that right yeah but I will say I do think you reach a point where you've won enough where we don't look at your box core we just go did you find a way to win and I was so aware this is what I thought was so impressive with the rock
- 22:38[SPEAKER_00]: watching that game through the binoculars and I'm just, you know, you scan as I know you are you're like scanning right before the snap and I'm like valedus scaling gauge, tangeris, feral, whoa, like you wanted to see him do it without debo, like, okay, how about without anybody else that he's used to playing with other than the running back McAfrey and and and to your, I thought he made some really good, he made one throw out of the red zone out of his own end zone on maybe the opening drive to Christian that I thought was
- 23:09[SPEAKER_00]: Like he just did some little stuff because he can move a little bit.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_00]: Now he made some, the second pick I'm with you.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_00]: Like, but what was he seven to seven on that last drive?
- 23:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think six to six or six for 67 in the touchdown.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the conversion to Don just like, Don just didn't have no.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_00]: Don just had one career target and it was two years ago.
- 23:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 23:32[SPEAKER_01]: So he ran, he ran almost, he almost ran more routes the other day than he'd run in his entire career.
- 23:39[SPEAKER_00]: It's incredible, like my over arching, that's pretty crazy Nick.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_00]: My overarching take command of that game is this might kind of be how it looks this year.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 23:49[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought if you would lost that game, if you're them, it would have felt like some of the games you lost last year.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_00]: Like, oh, here we go again, right?
- 23:56[SPEAKER_00]: Especially the moody miss and then the block.
- 24:00[SPEAKER_00]: So for, you know, the flip side of that is a quarterback who's
- 24:08[SPEAKER_00]: You know, at some point, I think the Marcus Robbins is gonna make it impact when he's back week four, for sure, at some point I you, Christian was fantastic.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_00]: You know, when that game without him, but I thought all in all, like, that's kind of the game we've been looking for.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_00]: Again, we're not, we're most things don't go right and Brock still finds a way.
- 24:26[SPEAKER_01]: I got to say that my big takeaway was just kind of surprise at how it played out because, yeah, if you
- 24:37[SPEAKER_01]: I would have said Seattle won the game, just because my thought has been from watching the team and I stand by still stand by this even after having a game of evidence that the offense was going to have to do a lot of the heavy lifting early in the season.
- 24:49[SPEAKER_01]: Now that was of course assuming that you have kiddo and you have Jennings and you're a little bit more healthy than what they are offensively right now.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_01]: But Robert Sala has been so open about
- 25:00[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what I don't know what we're going to look like.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_01]: I don't have no idea what we're going to look like.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_01]: He said last week, you put the seatbelt on, you know, just buckle up and let's see what happens, right?
- 25:09[SPEAKER_01]: And I followed that up with Robert, you've been saying, we'll see a lot.
- 25:12[SPEAKER_01]: This is the soft season.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_01]: What does that like for you?
- 25:15[SPEAKER_01]: And he gave a great answer about like, you know, you want to believe.
- 25:19[SPEAKER_01]: You've seen these guys every day.
- 25:20[SPEAKER_01]: You know what they're made of, but you want to believe.
- 25:22[SPEAKER_01]: And then, but you don't know.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_01]: You don't know until you know, right?
- 25:25[SPEAKER_01]: And so,
- 25:26[SPEAKER_01]: I thought just my big takeaway in watching, watching the game again a couple of times, I thought the defense, it wasn't great, but if you look at the numbers, it was great.
- 25:36[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's got to be exciting for the Niners because there is a lot of room.
- 25:41[SPEAKER_01]: for growth there.
- 25:41[SPEAKER_01]: You know, if you look at like success rate, their success rate wasn't that great for the game, but they were really good on third down.
- 25:48[SPEAKER_01]: Got off the field.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_01]: They were good.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_01]: Really good in the red zone.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_01]: They got two really timely takeaways, but you know, I saw a lot of people saying, well, the defensive line is, you know, they got, they all these investments, and they didn't get that much pressure, and they didn't get that many sacks, and they, man, I'm watching that tape.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_01]: Those guys were doing a great job of building a pocket, setting edges, and allowing D-winters and Fred Warner to just be guided missiles and do what they want.
- 26:13[SPEAKER_01]: Like those two guys were the best players on the field, and a lot of it was because I thought the defense line did a really good job of being a assignment sound and eating a blockers to allow those guys to kind of run free, the cornerbacks.
- 26:25[SPEAKER_01]: I thought played really well.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_01]: They were
- 26:27[SPEAKER_01]: Excellent in the run game which a year ago is a small thing he and I talked about this last time I was on is a small thing that people didn't talk about But it was lacking like they didn't have those guys who were willing to stick their nose out in there as much out on the edges and so I thought all of that would better I definitely did would not have guessed the 1713 game would have gone the 49ers way but to your point
- 26:49[SPEAKER_01]: Um, if this defense can kind of build off of this as they go and, you know, I looked at the first four games and said this game in Seattle is probably going to be the toughest of the first four and you win it.
- 26:59[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, now maybe you can play with house money a little bit.
- 27:01[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously you still need to take care of business against the teams that you should be, but, uh, an encouraging win for them.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously you just they would prefer they didn't come at the injury cost that it seems to.
- 27:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think no schedule, I think we got carried away.
- 27:15[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, the nine of schedule is easy.
- 27:18[SPEAKER_00]: And Kittle, I remember Kittle said a few weeks ago or a month ago, that's Richard Sherman, like, easy.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_00]: This is the NFL.
- 27:23[SPEAKER_00]: There's no easy.
- 27:23[SPEAKER_00]: And I do agree with that.
- 27:25[SPEAKER_00]: But I think your team was a great microcosm of you are not, and son of night football was a great.
- 27:29[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you're not playing the Marjacks and you're not playing the homes.
- 27:32[SPEAKER_00]: You're not playing Josh Allen.
- 27:34[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 27:34[SPEAKER_00]: So it doesn't mean anything's going to be easy, but it just means you can play a game where guys get hurt.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_00]: You self inflicted wounds and you're still going to have a chance to win at the end.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_00]: You still got to go do it.
- 27:45[SPEAKER_00]: But you're going to have that chance.
- 27:46[SPEAKER_00]: And that to me was kind that's my that's my big season take after watching week one.
- 27:51[SPEAKER_00]: It's just like, I you play a clean game you're going to win by 10.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_00]: You don't.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, maybe you still got a shot.
- 27:58[SPEAKER_01]: It was it was interesting after the game guy was I was talking to Jason Pinoc in the in the locker room and I said something about like you know kind of a kind of roller coaster for your first game as the 49er and he chuckled and he said man my whole life has been roller coaster my whole career has been roller coasters this is this is what I'm used to but we're talking about kind of the young guys and I asked him about like
- 28:17[SPEAKER_01]: I mentioned how much nerve see thought some of those young guys had on defense going into the game.
- 28:21[SPEAKER_01]: And he said that he said he lives by this quote and I really liked it.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_01]: So I just wanted to kind of give it in there.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_01]: But he said, trust is lost by the, sorry, trust is earned by the drop and lost by the bucket.
- 28:34[SPEAKER_01]: And it basically his point was that all these young defensive guys can't be worried about, you know, the big picture of like, oh, am I going to go in to do this right you got to just do it one play at a time you earn that trust by the drop and eventually everyone believes in you and you have that trust.
- 28:50[SPEAKER_01]: I thought, at least in this game, there was a lot of guys that you could look at some younger guys and say, okay, they're starting to earn that, you know, I look at Marky's Seagull.
- 28:58[SPEAKER_01]: Like, this is a guy who came in and did a really nice job.
- 29:01[SPEAKER_01]: He was under control.
- 29:01[SPEAKER_01]: He wasn't over running plays.
- 29:03[SPEAKER_01]: He was making tackles in the open field.
- 29:04[SPEAKER_01]: All the things that you would hope to see.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_01]: So, a long way to go, certainly for the 49ers and not perfect by any means, but I think the thing that they have to be most excited about is that
- 29:16[SPEAKER_01]: They want to get to your point from earlier, again, they probably wouldn't have one last year.
- 29:20[SPEAKER_01]: I could put a game that they won where there are still a lot of things that are picked.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_01]: They could tangibly clean up.
- 29:26[SPEAKER_01]: It's not just like, oh, we've got to be better.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, no, there's like, you make a 27-year-old field goal.
- 29:32[SPEAKER_01]: Like, that's, that's a cut and cut and dry thing, right?
- 29:35[SPEAKER_01]: So.
- 29:36[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm sure we can get into that specifically, but yeah, that was kind of my big takeaway years.
- 29:41[SPEAKER_01]: Again, the 49ers definitely don't win last year, but one while knowing there are a lot of things to clean up that they actually are capable of cleaning up.
- 29:50[SPEAKER_00]: It seems like you have some unique insight on this, just from what I saw you, I don't know if this was, I don't know if you wrote this, I think you might have tweeted this.
- 30:00[SPEAKER_00]: Kyle use check, kind of picking up the tight end load.
- 30:04[SPEAKER_00]: We even saw him line up.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_00]: I'd felt to me, I haven't checked the stats, but it felt to me like he lined up attached on the offensive line a little more than usual.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_00]: So if it sounds like when I could have, when I could see George Kittle for at least a couple of weeks is what it sounds like,
- 30:18[SPEAKER_00]: what's what's going on there?
- 30:21[SPEAKER_00]: It sounds like there's a change to the Niners the way they use Kyle use check this year.
- 30:25[SPEAKER_01]: So basically what happened was during training camp I was chatting with Kyle use check uh about the couple of stories that I was working on and he kind of brought up on prompted like because I I was asking him just about like interactions with some of the young guys and you know if he's taken a bigger role in leadership and then I got to stuff and he kind of
- 30:44[SPEAKER_01]: Titan meetings about half the time and what the realization was is basically like at this point from the run game perspective He knows the he knows the run game from the full back spot, but basically that that that the line between full back and tight end and their offense has blurred enough
- 31:02[SPEAKER_01]: that it makes sense for him to be in the tight end meeting room about half the time.
- 31:07[SPEAKER_01]: And so that's why you are seeing a little bit more of that, where he's attached to the line.
- 31:12[SPEAKER_01]: And it's why even if you want to go the other way with it during the preseason you'd see Jake Thomas.
- 31:17[SPEAKER_01]: playing fullback a little bit, right?
- 31:19[SPEAKER_01]: So it kind of goes both ways when you're looking at it that way.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_01]: And so I know Kyle's hearing him with the S. yesterday about Brandon Willis being an option and maybe maybe that is something that they will do and they don't necessarily have to promote him full time to the active roster.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_01]: They can do, you know, do the call-ups from the practice squad for a few weeks if they want.
- 31:36[SPEAKER_01]: But.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_01]: If they don't want to go that way, I could see a scenario in which use check is getting used out.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_01]: And remember, use check.
- 31:42[SPEAKER_01]: If you go all the way back, coming out of Harvard, was the tight end, like that was what he did.
- 31:46[SPEAKER_01]: So he's got some familiarity there.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know that they would necessarily attach him to the line and have him play the run blocking role that you do with a Luke Feral or even George Kittle.
- 31:56[SPEAKER_01]: But there is that positional versatility.
- 31:59[SPEAKER_01]: I wrote a story a couple of years ago talking to Kyle use check.
- 32:02[SPEAKER_01]: And the takeaway was,
- 32:04[SPEAKER_01]: If you want to play fullback in the NFL, the key to playing fullback is to not play fullback.
- 32:09[SPEAKER_01]: Like you have to be able, you have to be able to do a bunch of other stuff to do that, which is why you see you check like fielding puns and kick, kick off and all that kind of stuff during practice.
- 32:18[SPEAKER_01]: And so that's how he has carved out such a career for himself.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_01]: So well, the interesting thing to see.
- 32:24[SPEAKER_01]: And again, to the earlier point,
- 32:26[SPEAKER_01]: I think Brett Birdie would be on in favor of it because it is at least somebody that he's worked with for a long time, which as of right now, those are very few and far between in terms of healthy guys on their roster.
- 32:37[SPEAKER_00]: Well, yeah, you could wonder and we'll finish on this like Brock might just throw to people trust, which is what happened last week.
- 32:43[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 32:43[SPEAKER_00]: Like we're all fired up.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, the Kendrick Boren, Brock hasn't thrown a past the Kendrick Boren.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_00]: Never.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_00]: So it might as well be Marcus Valdez Gantling's brother.
- 32:53[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you know, you know, you know, has thrown passes to Kendrick Boren though.
- 32:56[SPEAKER_00]: Matt Jones.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_00]: Matt Jones.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_00]: That's right.
- 32:58[SPEAKER_00]: That's a good call right there.
- 32:59[SPEAKER_01]: They got the Patriot.
- 33:00[SPEAKER_01]: They got the Patriot's ties.
- 33:02[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, so it is, I mean, and that's the thing, Kendrick Boren, I don't think anyone expects him to come in and be a savior, but having some experience, having a guy who knows what he's supposed to do, what Kyle Shane, Shane Han expects of him, it makes all the sense in the world to do that and give him an opportunity.
- 33:18[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, this, the receiver situation, we knew it was going to probably be this way.
- 33:23[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, certainly beyond Pierce all and Jennings, you hope Jennings wouldn't have any issues.
- 33:27[SPEAKER_01]: And maybe Kyle's answer yesterday, maybe Jennings does play this week, uh, but the hope is for theirs from their standpoint, uh, that they can get those guys back, you know, this kind of keep their heads above water, losing kittles.
- 33:39[SPEAKER_01]: probably the worst guy they could lose.
- 33:40[SPEAKER_01]: At least for this first part of the season first three or four weeks.
- 33:44[SPEAKER_01]: But like you say, you get to Marcus Robinson back.
- 33:46[SPEAKER_01]: You feel better than IU because is closer and and all those things fall into place.
- 33:50[SPEAKER_01]: But the defense they're going to have to lean on a little bit more.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_01]: I think then they were hoping to at least hear in this early part of the season.
- 33:57[SPEAKER_01]: But as Robert Sala said, it best.
- 34:00[SPEAKER_01]: Buckle up.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see how it goes.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_01]: I love this.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_01]: It's trapped.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
