- 0:55Speaker: Welcome to episode 9.
- 0:57Speaker: My guest today is someone who has a very unique perspective
- 1:00Speaker: into one of the most bizarre cases involving a close
- 1:03Speaker: encounter of the third kind that you'll ever hear.
- 1:06Speaker: She's the daughter of Elmer
- 1:07Speaker: Lucky Sutton, one of eleven
- 1:09Speaker: people who claimed to have
- 1:10Speaker: encountered mysterious beings on
- 1:12Speaker: their farm in the summer of
- 1:13Speaker: nineteen fifty five, in an event
- 1:16Speaker: now famously known as the
- 1:17Speaker: Hopkinsville Kelly Little Green
- 1:19Speaker: Men encounter.
- 1:20Speaker: And I've just been fascinated with this case ever since I was
- 1:23Speaker: a little kid.
- 1:24Speaker: And I'd like to welcome to the
- 1:25Speaker: show Geraldine Sutton Stith,
- 1:27Speaker: daughter of Lucky Sutton and
- 1:30Speaker: author of several books on the
- 1:31Speaker: case, including Alien Legacy,
- 1:33Speaker: The Kelly Greenman and A Strange
- 1:35Speaker: New World.
- 1:36Speaker: Thank you for joining me, Geraldine.
- 1:37Speaker: Thank you.
- 1:38Speaker: Thank you, Matt, for having me, I appreciate it.
- 1:41Speaker: I'm excited to talk to you.
- 1:42Speaker: I've just finished both of your your books on the case.
- 1:44Speaker: And I'm really excited to hear what you have to say.
- 1:47Speaker: You have such a unique perspective on what happens.
- 1:50Speaker: And you, you were raised by the family who actually lived it.
- 1:54Speaker: Yes, exactly.
- 1:55Speaker: So you know, yeah, I know the story.
- 1:57Speaker: And, you know, I've heard it.
- 1:59Speaker: So, you know, I know how they felt.
- 2:01Speaker: I know what it did to them.
- 2:03Speaker: You know, I just know I'm sure
- 2:06Speaker: not everyone has heard of the
- 2:08Speaker: Hopkinsville Kelly Little Green
- 2:10Speaker: Men case.
- 2:10Speaker: Can you tell us how you've come
- 2:11Speaker: to understand the events of that
- 2:13Speaker: evening?
- 2:14Speaker: Okay, of course.
- 2:16Speaker: It was August the twenty first, nineteen fifty five.
- 2:19Speaker: Um, this happened on my grandmother's farm, Miss Glennie
- 2:23Speaker: Lankford, um, she owned the farm with her husband.
- 2:27Speaker: Um, he had passed.
- 2:28Speaker: So she was a widow.
- 2:29Speaker: So she lived there with her
- 2:30Speaker: three small children who were
- 2:32Speaker: twelve, ten and seven at the
- 2:34Speaker: time.
- 2:36Speaker: And my uncle J.C. and his wife,
- 2:38Speaker: Eileen stayed there with her and
- 2:39Speaker: helped her out the weekend this
- 2:42Speaker: happened, it just so happened my
- 2:44Speaker: dad, who had worked with the
- 2:47Speaker: carnival since he was the age of
- 2:49Speaker: fourteen, had come in for the
- 2:51Speaker: weekend.
- 2:52Speaker: Um, they were stationed in Evansville, so they decided
- 2:56Speaker: since they were so close, they would get away for a few days
- 2:59Speaker: and, you know, get some good old home cooking and see the family
- 3:02Speaker: for a little bit.
- 3:03Speaker: So him and his wife Vera, and
- 3:06Speaker: their friends, uh, Billy Ray
- 3:08Speaker: Taylor and June came in with
- 3:10Speaker: them.
- 3:11Speaker: And so they spent the weekend and enjoyed every, you know,
- 3:14Speaker: every minute they could.
- 3:15Speaker: And Sunday evening was going to be their last time.
- 3:17Speaker: So they were just enjoying a nice, quiet evening.
- 3:20Speaker: My grandmother had went to church.
- 3:21Speaker: She had gotten back.
- 3:23Speaker: Mhm.
- 3:24Speaker: The guys were sitting there
- 3:25Speaker: playing cards and Billy Ray
- 3:27Speaker: said, well, you know, I'm going
- 3:28Speaker: to go out to the well and get
- 3:29Speaker: some water.
- 3:30Speaker: Of course, they did not have running water in the house.
- 3:33Speaker: Electricity they did.
- 3:34Speaker: But running water?
- 3:35Speaker: No. So he ran out to the well.
- 3:38Speaker: And as he was standing there
- 3:40Speaker: getting his water, he heard
- 3:41Speaker: something he didn't recognized,
- 3:44Speaker: looked up toward where he was
- 3:46Speaker: hearing this noise, and saw a
- 3:49Speaker: round.
- 3:50Speaker: Well, it was an oval object,
- 3:52Speaker: silver in color, and he
- 3:54Speaker: described it having all the
- 3:56Speaker: colors of the rainbow floating
- 3:58Speaker: behind it.
- 4:00Speaker: Of course, he didn't know what it was.
- 4:02Speaker: None of us would have.
- 4:03Speaker: So he ran in the house, slammed the door behind him.
- 4:07Speaker: Of course, everybody was just,
- 4:09Speaker: you know, shocked and looked up
- 4:10Speaker: at him.
- 4:11Speaker: You know Billy Ray, what's wrong?
- 4:13Speaker: And he told him, he says, I just
- 4:14Speaker: saw something out here and it's
- 4:16Speaker: not right.
- 4:17Speaker: You know, it scared him.
- 4:18Speaker: He was pale.
- 4:19Speaker: He was sweating.
- 4:21Speaker: His wife could see that.
- 4:22Speaker: But yet they thought, well, Billy Ray being Billy Ray, he's
- 4:25Speaker: just playing a trick on us.
- 4:27Speaker: So they just let it go.
- 4:29Speaker: Just laughed at him and kept on.
- 4:31Speaker: And he.
- 4:32Speaker: But he was very adamant about it.
- 4:34Speaker: And he kept saying, there's something out here.
- 4:35Speaker: You need to listen to me.
- 4:37Speaker: Well, my dad, who, like you
- 4:39Speaker: said, is Elmer Lucky Sutton
- 4:40Speaker: said, Billy, take me out to
- 4:43Speaker: Ellis.
- 4:43Speaker: Let's let's go over this again.
- 4:45Speaker: Because they tried to reason with him.
- 4:46Speaker: They tried to you know, my grandmother said, well, maybe it
- 4:49Speaker: was a shooting star.
- 4:50Speaker: And Billy Ray told them, no, I know what that looks like.
- 4:53Speaker: Well, maybe it was a meteor
- 4:55Speaker: shower because they had been
- 4:56Speaker: having meteor showers that
- 4:58Speaker: month.
- 4:58Speaker: Mhm.
- 4:59Speaker: He said, no, I know what those look like too.
- 5:01Speaker: It was it was neither of those.
- 5:03Speaker: So they went out to the well and he stood there and he pointed
- 5:07Speaker: towards the sky.
- 5:07Speaker: Told my dad again what he saw.
- 5:09Speaker: My dad tried to reason with him
- 5:10Speaker: again with what they had just
- 5:12Speaker: talked about.
- 5:12Speaker: And Billy Ray is very adamant about it.
- 5:14Speaker: No it wasn't none of those things.
- 5:16Speaker: I'm telling you, there was something out here.
- 5:19Speaker: Well, my dad told him, said, listen, this is our last night.
- 5:22Speaker: This is all we got left.
- 5:23Speaker: Let's go in and enjoy the rest of it.
- 5:25Speaker: There's nothing out here now.
- 5:27Speaker: So as they're heading toward the house, they'll.
- 5:29Speaker: Hound dog went running by him,
- 5:31Speaker: tail tucked ears down, ran under
- 5:33Speaker: the house.
- 5:34Speaker: Well, my dad thought he'd gotten himself in trouble.
- 5:36Speaker: Like maybe a beehive or something.
- 5:37Speaker: Didn't think any more of it.
- 5:39Speaker: Well, he kept walking toward the house, and lo and behold, they
- 5:43Speaker: saw something come out of the back of the woods.
- 5:46Speaker: It had huge ears, big glowing
- 5:49Speaker: eyes, arms down to the ground,
- 5:52Speaker: and it seemed to float above the
- 5:54Speaker: ground.
- 5:55Speaker: Okay.
- 5:56Speaker: Well, they both ran in the door, slammed it behind them, and
- 5:59Speaker: started telling everybody, yes, there is something out here.
- 6:02Speaker: Well, of course, my grandmother
- 6:04Speaker: and everybody else thought,
- 6:05Speaker: well, Billy Ray then got lucky
- 6:07Speaker: out there to go along with his
- 6:09Speaker: little trickery, trying to scare
- 6:12Speaker: the girls, because you got to
- 6:13Speaker: realize these were all people in
- 6:15Speaker: their twenties.
- 6:16Speaker: And June was was actually either eighteen or nineteen.
- 6:19Speaker: So, you know, that was their big thing.
- 6:21Speaker: And so they kept on.
- 6:22Speaker: My grandmother told my dad said,
- 6:26Speaker: you need to just calm down
- 6:27Speaker: because I got to get these kids
- 6:29Speaker: in bed and you're not helping
- 6:31Speaker: me.
- 6:31Speaker: And he kept on, you know, mom, there is something out here.
- 6:35Speaker: Well, she knew it was serious.
- 6:37Speaker: When one grabbed a rifle, one
- 6:38Speaker: grabbed the shotgun, one went to
- 6:40Speaker: the front door, one went to the
- 6:41Speaker: back.
- 6:42Speaker: So my grandmother thought, okay,
- 6:45Speaker: I'll go see Billy Ray because
- 6:47Speaker: she thought she could get more
- 6:48Speaker: out of Billy Ray than she could
- 6:50Speaker: my dad.
- 6:51Speaker: So she went out back where he was squatted down there beside
- 6:55Speaker: him, asked him, Billy Ray, what did you see?
- 7:00Speaker: And he told her.
- 7:01Speaker: He said, Miss Glennie, I hope it's something that you never
- 7:04Speaker: have to see.
- 7:05Speaker: So they sat there in silence for a while.
- 7:08Speaker: They could hear the others
- 7:09Speaker: talking in the background in the
- 7:10Speaker: house, and it was, of course,
- 7:13Speaker: getting dark.
- 7:14Speaker: And lo and behold, around the corner of the house where my
- 7:17Speaker: grandmother was sitting, this little being big ears, glowing
- 7:22Speaker: eyes, arms down to the ground.
- 7:24Speaker: She screams, she falls.
- 7:27Speaker: Everybody hears her.
- 7:28Speaker: They come run into her.
- 7:30Speaker: She's at Billy Ray's helping her get up.
- 7:34Speaker: And she told them, said there is something out here.
- 7:37Speaker: And lo and behold, they hear shot ring out in the house.
- 7:39Speaker: They run in there.
- 7:40Speaker: My uncle J.C. shot one through the window.
- 7:43Speaker: Billy Ray.
- 7:43Speaker: I guess he got his big boy pants on by then.
- 7:46Speaker: He runs out the front door, and there's this little stoop over
- 7:49Speaker: the door, and he's standing there and there's this clawed
- 7:53Speaker: hand that comes down trying to grab his hair.
- 7:56Speaker: My Aunt Eileen reaches out,
- 7:58Speaker: yanks him back in the house, and
- 8:00Speaker: my dad runs out, turned towards
- 8:02Speaker: the roof where it was at, shoots
- 8:05Speaker: at it.
- 8:05Speaker: He hits it.
- 8:06Speaker: Of course he hears it.
- 8:07Speaker: Plus, these are country boys that could shoot by the time
- 8:10Speaker: they could walk, just about.
- 8:12Speaker: So he hits it.
- 8:12Speaker: It rolls, floats away.
- 8:15Speaker: Well, somebody screams, there's one in the front tree because
- 8:18Speaker: they had these huge maple trees in the front yard.
- 8:20Speaker: So he turned and there it is, sitting on a big limb shoots it.
- 8:24Speaker: It falls to the ground.
- 8:26Speaker: Well, it floats to the ground actually, and hits the ground,
- 8:29Speaker: rolls and goes away.
- 8:31Speaker: Here they are.
- 8:32Speaker: They don't know what these things are.
- 8:33Speaker: They shoot one off the back fence.
- 8:34Speaker: They're trying to keep them out of the windows, out of the
- 8:37Speaker: doors, because it seems like they're trying to come in.
- 8:39Speaker: They don't know, you know.
- 8:42Speaker: So everybody is scared.
- 8:43Speaker: The kids are crying.
- 8:44Speaker: The women don't, you know June's about to lose it.
- 8:48Speaker: And what are they to do?
- 8:50Speaker: These things will not die.
- 8:53Speaker: They shoot them.
- 8:55Speaker: They come up, they come back.
- 8:57Speaker: What are they to do?
- 8:59Speaker: So my dad sits them all down and tells them, says, listen, we're
- 9:03Speaker: going to get to Hopkinsville.
- 9:04Speaker: If we can get to Hopkinsville,
- 9:05Speaker: we can get help, which
- 9:07Speaker: Hopkinsville at the time was
- 9:08Speaker: like seven miles down the road
- 9:09Speaker: from Kelly.
- 9:11Speaker: So they're sitting there in silence, trying to wait to find
- 9:15Speaker: a good moment to leave, when all of a sudden they hear one going
- 9:18Speaker: across the tin roof and they can hear the nails clicking and
- 9:24Speaker: scratching along the roof.
- 9:25Speaker: Well, this really sends everybody into hysterics.
- 9:28Speaker: June's really about to lose it.
- 9:30Speaker: Everybody.
- 9:30Speaker: The kids are crying.
- 9:31Speaker: What are they going to do?
- 9:35Speaker: And my dad tells them says,
- 9:36Speaker: listen, we're going to get out
- 9:37Speaker: of this.
- 9:38Speaker: Just hold on.
- 9:39Speaker: Just hold on.
- 9:40Speaker: So they sit there for a little bit longer.
- 9:42Speaker: It gets quiet again.
- 9:44Speaker: And he says, let's go.
- 9:45Speaker: So they hit the trucks and head to Hopkinsville.
- 9:48Speaker: Here they get to Hopkinsville.
- 9:50Speaker: Of course, this is nineteen fifty five.
- 9:52Speaker: Uh, one little officer on duty.
- 9:54Speaker: You know, they didn't have to have a bunch like they do today.
- 9:57Speaker: And, uh, he got eleven people
- 10:00Speaker: from the age of seven to fifty
- 10:03Speaker: running into this little
- 10:05Speaker: officer's place there, and
- 10:07Speaker: they're all trying to tell what
- 10:09Speaker: happened.
- 10:10Speaker: And he's not understanding.
- 10:11Speaker: And he's like, well, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 10:13Speaker: You say you got little men trying to get into your house,
- 10:16Speaker: and my dad's trying to tell him, you're not understanding what
- 10:18Speaker: we're trying to tell you.
- 10:19Speaker: So he tells them, listen, let me call the chief.
- 10:22Speaker: So he calls Chief Russell.
- 10:25Speaker: Greeneville.
- 10:26Speaker: Greeneville tells him.
- 10:27Speaker: Says, keep them there.
- 10:29Speaker: Call Fort Campbell.
- 10:31Speaker: Fort Campbell Army base was
- 10:33Speaker: about ten miles from
- 10:34Speaker: Hopkinsville.
- 10:35Speaker: Called Fort Campbell, called the paper.
- 10:38Speaker: Get Ahold of, you know, just everybody you can.
- 10:40Speaker: Let's get some people out there to this farm.
- 10:43Speaker: Because Greenville believed
- 10:45Speaker: wholeheartedly something was
- 10:46Speaker: going on.
- 10:48Speaker: So they all get there.
- 10:49Speaker: They try to calm the family down.
- 10:51Speaker: They all get back in the vehicles, head toward Kelly.
- 10:53Speaker: Okay, you got this caravan of
- 10:55Speaker: vehicles going to itsy bitsy
- 10:57Speaker: Kelly in the middle of the
- 10:58Speaker: night.
- 10:58Speaker: It's pitch black, dark.
- 10:59Speaker: They didn't have street lights and stuff like that back then.
- 11:03Speaker: They pull up, get out, and they can tell something happened.
- 11:06Speaker: It feels strange for one, two, you've got rifle shotgun shells
- 11:12Speaker: all over the ground.
- 11:14Speaker: You've got them inside the house
- 11:16Speaker: and there's holes through the
- 11:19Speaker: screens.
- 11:19Speaker: There's places on the woodwork
- 11:21Speaker: that they hit, you know,
- 11:24Speaker: obvious.
- 11:25Speaker: Something happened to this family, right?
- 11:27Speaker: Well, as they pulled up the car of officers did notice that
- 11:31Speaker: there was a glowing substance back on the fence.
- 11:33Speaker: It was where they had shot one.
- 11:35Speaker: So of course, they ran back
- 11:36Speaker: there as soon as they could get
- 11:38Speaker: there.
- 11:39Speaker: But as they came up on the
- 11:40Speaker: substance, it would not glow
- 11:42Speaker: anymore.
- 11:42Speaker: The only time they could see
- 11:44Speaker: glowing is if they were away
- 11:46Speaker: from it, but that's the only
- 11:48Speaker: thing they could find besides
- 11:49Speaker: the, you know, shotgun and rifle
- 11:51Speaker: shells.
- 11:51Speaker: They looked everywhere.
- 11:53Speaker: Couldn't find a body.
- 11:55Speaker: Greenwell went to my grandmother and said, Miss Glennie, I am so
- 11:59Speaker: sorry, but there's nothing here.
- 12:00Speaker: There's nothing we can do for you.
- 12:03Speaker: And they left.
- 12:04Speaker: So they left my grandmother
- 12:05Speaker: there for anything to happen
- 12:08Speaker: again.
- 12:08Speaker: You know, they were still all afraid.
- 12:10Speaker: She finally got the kids down to sleep.
- 12:14Speaker: She went and got in her bed.
- 12:15Speaker: My dad sat beside her in the rocking chair with a shotgun
- 12:18Speaker: across his lap.
- 12:20Speaker: And she opened her eyes and she
- 12:22Speaker: saw a little been at the window
- 12:24Speaker: again.
- 12:24Speaker: And she got to thinking, you know, I'm tired.
- 12:28Speaker: You know, they are physically and mentally exhausted.
- 12:32Speaker: So she closes her eyes and she opens them up the second time.
- 12:35Speaker: Well, it's still standing there.
- 12:37Speaker: The third time she does it, she screams at my dad, they're back.
- 12:40Speaker: So they get up and here they are defending the house again.
- 12:44Speaker: And this goes on till the sun rises.
- 12:48Speaker: When the sun comes up.
- 12:49Speaker: They disappear.
- 12:51Speaker: And the only thing they can figure.
- 12:54Speaker: The reason why is they did
- 12:56Speaker: notice that if they shined a
- 12:58Speaker: light toward them, or if they
- 13:00Speaker: kicked the light on, they backed
- 13:02Speaker: off.
- 13:04Speaker: So they thought, well, maybe
- 13:05Speaker: their big eyes couldn't take the
- 13:07Speaker: light.
- 13:07Speaker: So the sun was their saving grace.
- 13:10Speaker: Well, my dad got everybody set em down.
- 13:13Speaker: Told them.
- 13:13Speaker: I said, listen, no good can come of this story.
- 13:17Speaker: I heard them last night.
- 13:18Speaker: They were laughing at us.
- 13:20Speaker: They don't believe us.
- 13:21Speaker: So they said, forget it.
- 13:23Speaker: Just forget this ever happened.
- 13:25Speaker: Let's just go on with our lives and just let it go.
- 13:28Speaker: Mhm.
- 13:29Speaker: Well, some of the guys actually went to Evansville that morning
- 13:31Speaker: to do something.
- 13:33Speaker: Uh, the girls stayed there, and
- 13:34Speaker: while they were there, there was
- 13:36Speaker: people actually coming in
- 13:37Speaker: wanting to talk to them and
- 13:38Speaker: interview them.
- 13:39Speaker: So they started getting bombarded with people.
- 13:42Speaker: And so I call it the invasion of the people because they were
- 13:46Speaker: coming from everywhere.
- 13:47Speaker: Word had gotten out all over the country that this had happened.
- 13:52Speaker: So everybody was wanting to find out about it.
- 13:55Speaker: So you had people camping out in the yard.
- 13:57Speaker: You had people walking around picking up souvenirs.
- 14:00Speaker: They were actually walking
- 14:02Speaker: through the house and taking
- 14:04Speaker: stuff.
- 14:04Speaker: Wow.
- 14:05Speaker: You know, my grandmother asked
- 14:06Speaker: one of the officers that was
- 14:08Speaker: there, can you do something
- 14:09Speaker: about this?
- 14:10Speaker: They're going to rob us blind.
- 14:12Speaker: And he told her.
- 14:13Speaker: He says, well, I'll try.
- 14:14Speaker: And so he did get everybody to leave.
- 14:16Speaker: But as soon as the officers were gone, they came back.
- 14:21Speaker: So, you know, what were they to do?
- 14:23Speaker: Um, my dad and Billy Ray and the girls had to go back to work.
- 14:27Speaker: They had to leave.
- 14:28Speaker: So all that was going to be left
- 14:29Speaker: was my grandmother, three small
- 14:31Speaker: kids, and my Uncle Jesse and
- 14:33Speaker: Aunt Eileen.
- 14:33Speaker: And what was she to do?
- 14:35Speaker: So, um, she sold the farm, sold it within two weeks.
- 14:41Speaker: Wow.
- 14:42Speaker: And moved into Hopkinsville to an apartment complex where she
- 14:45Speaker: felt safer because she was around people and she thought.
- 14:49Speaker: Safety in numbers.
- 14:51Speaker: And she sold the house to other
- 14:54Speaker: family members and the kids
- 14:57Speaker: that.
- 14:57Speaker: Of course, they're older today,
- 14:59Speaker: but that are alive today can
- 15:01Speaker: tell you that they hated that
- 15:03Speaker: place.
- 15:04Speaker: They did not want to move into it because the people that lived
- 15:07Speaker: in Kelly, you know, knew something happened that night
- 15:10Speaker: because they heard the stuff that was going on.
- 15:12Speaker: They heard the shots.
- 15:13Speaker: They heard the screaming, the cussing, the carrying on, you
- 15:17Speaker: know, and all during the day, that day, there were lights
- 15:21Speaker: being seen around everywhere that nobody could explain.
- 15:25Speaker: That night, there was a light
- 15:27Speaker: going from Clarksville to Fort
- 15:30Speaker: Campbell through Hopkinsville
- 15:32Speaker: and was seen over Kelly that
- 15:34Speaker: night.
- 15:35Speaker: But this stuff did not come out till later on.
- 15:38Speaker: So things, you know, were happening.
- 15:40Speaker: And my mom lived in Kelly at the
- 15:42Speaker: time to see my mom and dad
- 15:43Speaker: weren't married yet, and, um,
- 15:46Speaker: um, she lived there and Kelly
- 15:49Speaker: with her first husband and seven
- 15:51Speaker: kids.
- 15:51Speaker: And she said it was terrifying
- 15:53Speaker: because they didn't know if
- 15:54Speaker: these things were going to come
- 15:56Speaker: back.
- 15:56Speaker: If they did come back, what did they want?
- 15:58Speaker: What did they want in the first place?
- 16:00Speaker: Why did they land in little bitty?
- 16:01Speaker: What do you want?
- 16:03Speaker: Yeah.
- 16:03Speaker: And she was this one house, you
- 16:05Speaker: know, nobody could understand
- 16:07Speaker: it.
- 16:08Speaker: So, you know.
- 16:09Speaker: But the next morning also, I didn't mention this the next
- 16:12Speaker: morning also, um, they came from Fort Campbell and, and surveyed
- 16:17Speaker: the place, you know, did the, you know, aren't the shoulders
- 16:21Speaker: shoulder, what do they call it.
- 16:22Speaker: I can't think like they agreed canvassing.
- 16:24Speaker: Yeah.
- 16:25Speaker: Yeah.
- 16:25Speaker: And and and went down through there and did that, you know, of
- 16:29Speaker: course there was stuff flying over that was doing searches,
- 16:32Speaker: but you know, they just do it to the side, let it go.
- 16:35Speaker: They never found any physical evidence at all.
- 16:38Speaker: All of these gunshots and
- 16:40Speaker: shooting and, um, all of these
- 16:43Speaker: beings being shot and there was
- 16:44Speaker: not anything.
- 16:45Speaker: Well, I was told by somebody that of course is real, a lot
- 16:51Speaker: older now, but was there that day that saw it that said that
- 16:55Speaker: they did witness somebody in the military pick up something, hide
- 17:01Speaker: it under the shirt, run it to the back of the truck, drop it
- 17:03Speaker: in the back of the truck, and the truck took off.
- 17:05Speaker: But we'll never know.
- 17:07Speaker: You know, you just don't know about these things.
- 17:09Speaker: So they keep everything hidden and hush hush.
- 17:13Speaker: And you know, it gets swept under the rug.
- 17:16Speaker: And we don't talk about that.
- 17:17Speaker: Was it ever was this case ever investigated?
- 17:19Speaker: I know Project Blue Book did
- 17:21Speaker: investigations from the fifties
- 17:23Speaker: like the fifty two to sixty
- 17:25Speaker: nine.
- 17:25Speaker: I think so this falls right in there.
- 17:28Speaker: Was there ever like an official investigation?
- 17:30Speaker: No, no no no, they just they just swept it under the rug.
- 17:34Speaker: They they never did anything they should have.
- 17:36Speaker: They didn't take any samples of anything which they could have.
- 17:40Speaker: They could have taken a sample off the ground where that
- 17:42Speaker: glowing substance was.
- 17:44Speaker: You took something off that roof.
- 17:47Speaker: There had to have been something on that roof, or they'd been
- 17:49Speaker: crawling across it yet.
- 17:52Speaker: Dirt, anything they could have gotten up, you know?
- 17:55Speaker: And okay, this is a kicker because, see, my parents kept
- 18:02Speaker: this story hid from us.
- 18:03Speaker: We found out about it just by chance and by chance.
- 18:07Speaker: I mean, when I was like eight years old, this couple came to
- 18:13Speaker: our house to talk to my dad.
- 18:16Speaker: I'll never forget this.
- 18:18Speaker: And, um, I guess my mom and dad thought, well, they're going to
- 18:22Speaker: find out about it sometime because the other, the older
- 18:25Speaker: kids kept this hush.
- 18:26Speaker: They didn't talk about it.
- 18:28Speaker: And, uh, so my parents set us down on the floor in a circle,
- 18:33Speaker: all the smaller kids.
- 18:35Speaker: And, um, my dad told this incredible story.
- 18:39Speaker: It scared me to death, you know, because I've always loved
- 18:43Speaker: science fiction and horror.
- 18:45Speaker: Even when I was little, I loved this stuff.
- 18:48Speaker: But after I heard the story, it terrified me.
- 18:51Speaker: I'd go through at night, close
- 18:53Speaker: all the doors and shutters and
- 18:54Speaker: windows and everything because I
- 18:56Speaker: was afraid these things were
- 18:57Speaker: going to come back and look in
- 18:59Speaker: at us.
- 19:00Speaker: Well, it checks all the boxes.
- 19:01Speaker: As far as being one of those
- 19:02Speaker: horrible, you know, sci fi,
- 19:04Speaker: alien invasion types of
- 19:06Speaker: scenarios.
- 19:07Speaker: I mean, it's everything.
- 19:08Speaker: So I can see why you'd be terrified as a kid.
- 19:11Speaker: You know, back in the late
- 19:12Speaker: fifties, when all these sci fi
- 19:15Speaker: movies about aliens came out,
- 19:18Speaker: you know?
- 19:18Speaker: So, you know, in the late sixties, when I was like eight
- 19:21Speaker: years old, of course, I was watching these things.
- 19:23Speaker: Never even thought about anything that, you know, being
- 19:27Speaker: real until this story.
- 19:29Speaker: But the, the kicker to this is the following weekend after this
- 19:33Speaker: couple came and talked to my dad, and my dad took us to Kelly
- 19:37Speaker: and showed us where it all happened and we went.
- 19:42Speaker: The old house was still standing.
- 19:44Speaker: Nobody was living in it.
- 19:45Speaker: It was coming apart.
- 19:47Speaker: The well is still there.
- 19:48Speaker: It's still there right now.
- 19:50Speaker: Is it really okay?
- 19:51Speaker: Yeah.
- 19:52Speaker: And then he took us back in the
- 19:53Speaker: field where this craft had
- 19:56Speaker: landed.
- 19:57Speaker: And sure enough, I'll never forget it.
- 19:59Speaker: This big round spot was on the
- 20:02Speaker: ground where no grass was
- 20:04Speaker: growing.
- 20:05Speaker: Wow.
- 20:05Speaker: How big was this ring?
- 20:07Speaker: Or was it an oval?
- 20:08Speaker: Or was it a ring?
- 20:10Speaker: It was round.
- 20:11Speaker: It was totally round.
- 20:12Speaker: It was like the size.
- 20:13Speaker: I like to tell people it was probably the size.
- 20:17Speaker: You know how big a like a thirty two.
- 20:21Speaker: How did they do?
- 20:22Speaker: We had a swimming pool that big, a thirty two, thirty two foot or
- 20:26Speaker: what have you said swimming pool about that big, I would say.
- 20:31Speaker: You know, I was pretty decent size.
- 20:33Speaker: I was eight years old, but I wasn't stupid either.
- 20:35Speaker: Right.
- 20:36Speaker: So, you know, you know, it was huge.
- 20:40Speaker: And I've had people come forward and tell me that grew up in
- 20:43Speaker: Kelly, that there's many a day.
- 20:45Speaker: They just walked right across that circle.
- 20:47Speaker: They knew it was there.
- 20:48Speaker: MM. You know, going hunting back in there and stuff.
- 20:52Speaker: Yeah.
- 20:52Speaker: They just walk across that and never even think twice about it.
- 20:55Speaker: And they knew it was there.
- 20:57Speaker: Of course now all that back in
- 20:59Speaker: there, the people that own it,
- 21:02Speaker: that part of the land has grown
- 21:04Speaker: up.
- 21:05Speaker: And I don't even know if they've even had it, you know, surveyed
- 21:09Speaker: or not, because the trees are huge and it's grown.
- 21:12Speaker: And, um, we, I don't know how long your, your, your thing is
- 21:18Speaker: here, but as long as it needs to be, it's, there's no time limit.
- 21:21Speaker: Okay.
- 21:22Speaker: I'm fascinated with this.
- 21:23Speaker: So go ahead.
- 21:24Speaker: Okay.
- 21:24Speaker: Because back in twenty twenty, uh, I don't know if you know who
- 21:29Speaker: Ben Hansen is, but, um, he does the paranormal UFO shows and
- 21:35Speaker: that type of thing.
- 21:36Speaker: And this show came out on
- 21:37Speaker: Discovery Plus called UFO
- 21:40Speaker: witness.
- 21:41Speaker: Mhm.
- 21:42Speaker: And they got Ahold of me wanting to do the story.
- 21:44Speaker: So in twenty twenty, we actually
- 21:45Speaker: went down to Kelly and and did
- 21:48Speaker: the show.
- 21:49Speaker: Oh, wow.
- 21:49Speaker: And I have a book where I have
- 21:54Speaker: a, a map where Isabel Davis, who
- 21:58Speaker: did a really good write up on
- 21:59Speaker: this story, uh, did a map and
- 22:03Speaker: she actually did the map where
- 22:05Speaker: you could tell where the craft
- 22:08Speaker: had landed.
- 22:10Speaker: So Ben took this map that I had and measured out everything, and
- 22:16Speaker: we were actually able to measure out approximately where the
- 22:20Speaker: craft had landed.
- 22:22Speaker: And back in those woods, like I
- 22:23Speaker: said, it was really, really
- 22:25Speaker: thick.
- 22:25Speaker: You couldn't hardly get back in there.
- 22:27Speaker: But he was able to get back in
- 22:29Speaker: there far enough that he's
- 22:31Speaker: pretty sure he found the spot,
- 22:32Speaker: because there is a spot back in
- 22:34Speaker: there that still isn't growing
- 22:37Speaker: like the rest of the trees
- 22:39Speaker: around it.
- 22:40Speaker: Okay.
- 22:41Speaker: MM. He took a Geiger counter with him, and it did read.
- 22:46Speaker: After all these years, it had
- 22:47Speaker: still had a reading in that
- 22:48Speaker: area.
- 22:49Speaker: That's that's amazing.
- 22:50Speaker: He also brought a metal detector because he wanted to check out
- 22:53Speaker: some of the trees to see if there were any, you know,
- 22:57Speaker: shells, bullets, anything like that in there.
- 22:58Speaker: But of course, you couldn't really go by that because fifty
- 23:01Speaker: five to now you've had people hunting back there for years and
- 23:04Speaker: years and years.
- 23:05Speaker: So, you know, but it was just amazing that he was able to get
- 23:08Speaker: back in there.
- 23:09Speaker: We went so far.
- 23:11Speaker: Me and my sister did, and then it just got so thick.
- 23:13Speaker: Ben said, just hold off because because it was getting dark.
- 23:17Speaker: And he went back on in there with the camera guy and got back
- 23:22Speaker: in there as far as they could.
- 23:23Speaker: And then when he got back in there, he got to hearing stuff.
- 23:26Speaker: And I think it kind of scared
- 23:28Speaker: him because like I said, it was
- 23:30Speaker: really thick.
- 23:31Speaker: And he said, do you know if
- 23:32Speaker: there's any Bigfoot back in
- 23:33Speaker: here?
- 23:33Speaker: And I'm like, oh, no. I don't know.
- 23:38Speaker: There's no telling what?
- 23:39Speaker: What's back in these woods?
- 23:40Speaker: Well, he could blend that episode in with another episode
- 23:43Speaker: of the paranormal if he if he did bump into something.
- 23:45Speaker: So, hey, it could have worked out, right?
- 23:47Speaker: But anyway, it turned out really good.
- 23:49Speaker: That was a really good one.
- 23:51Speaker: You know, I've done several
- 23:52Speaker: shows and I think that was
- 23:53Speaker: probably.
- 23:54Speaker: I'll have to check that out.
- 23:56Speaker: I'll have a link to that in the, in the show notes, so everybody
- 23:58Speaker: can check it out.
- 23:59Speaker: And I'll have a link to your, uh, your books too.
- 24:01Speaker: Is the Amazon the best place to, to find your books?
- 24:04Speaker: Or is there a better well, actually, if you really want to
- 24:07Speaker: get a book and get it signed and everything, you just need to go
- 24:10Speaker: on my Etsy shop page, which is called aliens and Goblins, all
- 24:17Speaker: lowercase all together.
- 24:20Speaker: And you get on there and they're cheaper.
- 24:22Speaker: I sell them cheaper on there and I autograph them for people.
- 24:27Speaker: Oh that's nice.
- 24:28Speaker: I'll, I'll link to that too.
- 24:29Speaker: A little, little card that's
- 24:31Speaker: like a synopsis that I had
- 24:33Speaker: somebody made for me and, you
- 24:35Speaker: know, little gifts and stuff,
- 24:37Speaker: so.
- 24:37Speaker: Oh very cool.
- 24:38Speaker: I'm looking at the cover of your book, the Kelley Greenman, and
- 24:41Speaker: it's got a picture of, I think, what the family all reported as
- 24:46Speaker: what the creature looked like.
- 24:47Speaker: And it just, it's terrifying actually.
- 24:49Speaker: It's got these giant yellow eyes, long skinny arms.
- 24:52Speaker: Yes.
- 24:53Speaker: Um, but he wasn't terrifying.
- 24:55Speaker: I know the Evansville newspaper
- 24:56Speaker: at the time reported the little
- 24:58Speaker: green man, but it was actually
- 25:00Speaker: not green.
- 25:01Speaker: More of a silvery or gray.
- 25:03Speaker: Is that correct?
- 25:03Speaker: Yes.
- 25:04Speaker: Yes.
- 25:04Speaker: Well, they call it gunmetal gray.
- 25:07Speaker: Gunmetal gray.
- 25:07Speaker: Okay.
- 25:08Speaker: Yeah.
- 25:09Speaker: But, um, the coin little green man came from a reporter that
- 25:14Speaker: put the two and two together.
- 25:15Speaker: Kelly.
- 25:16Speaker: Kelly green.
- 25:17Speaker: Oh, there you go.
- 25:17Speaker: Yeah.
- 25:18Speaker: And, um.
- 25:19Speaker: So he just made it.
- 25:21Speaker: Kelly Green man, because it just
- 25:22Speaker: sounded better than Kelly Gray
- 25:25Speaker: man.
- 25:25Speaker: Than the gunmetal men.
- 25:27Speaker: Yeah.
- 25:27Speaker: And so when you hear little green men, you hear that phrase.
- 25:31Speaker: It actually came from this.
- 25:33Speaker: Wow.
- 25:34Speaker: Yeah, I learned something there.
- 25:37Speaker: What are some of the alternative theories as to what this was?
- 25:40Speaker: If this wasn't some sort of UFO landing with aliens visiting,
- 25:44Speaker: what do you think it could have been if it weren't?
- 25:47Speaker: If it wasn't that I couldn't tell you.
- 25:50Speaker: I mean, I have to think after
- 25:54Speaker: you hear everything and put it
- 25:56Speaker: together, you have to think
- 25:58Speaker: alien.
- 25:58Speaker: Because like I said, people see lights during the day.
- 26:01Speaker: That day they see lights.
- 26:03Speaker: That night, they heard things during the night.
- 26:06Speaker: That night that didn't make any sense.
- 26:08Speaker: So they'd never heard before.
- 26:09Speaker: Right.
- 26:10Speaker: Um, so with that, I have to thank alien.
- 26:14Speaker: Of course, you know, they are,
- 26:15Speaker: they, you know, they are called
- 26:16Speaker: Hopkinsville goblins.
- 26:17Speaker: And the reason they're called
- 26:18Speaker: goblins is and I love goblins
- 26:21Speaker: better than Kelly Kelly green
- 26:22Speaker: man.
- 26:23Speaker: I'll be honest with you.
- 26:24Speaker: I just love calling them goblins.
- 26:26Speaker: But my grandmother, you know,
- 26:29Speaker: she thought there was something
- 26:31Speaker: the devil had brought forth
- 26:32Speaker: because she was really
- 26:33Speaker: religious.
- 26:34Speaker: And so that was her first thought, that did she do
- 26:38Speaker: something wrong with something, you know, and, and cause she
- 26:42Speaker: just went to church that night.
- 26:43Speaker: Like I said, she's very religious, um, goblins.
- 26:47Speaker: So they did call them goblins for a little bit until people
- 26:51Speaker: realized, okay, we had all this stuff going on.
- 26:53Speaker: So. MM, maybe they were aliens, but, you know, I've had people
- 26:59Speaker: come forward and tell me different things too, which you
- 27:01Speaker: read in the book.
- 27:03Speaker: Absolutely.
- 27:03Speaker: I know like owls, like an owl, but I mean, these people were
- 27:06Speaker: you're in the middle of kind of you're in the country.
- 27:09Speaker: These people are farm people and
- 27:11Speaker: they know what an owl looks like
- 27:13Speaker: at night.
- 27:14Speaker: So I got to think.
- 27:15Speaker: And also shooting a creature that close, I mean, I don't
- 27:18Speaker: think they're gonna miss.
- 27:20Speaker: So that doesn't make any sense to me.
- 27:22Speaker: These and I think I think a cat and monkey theory.
- 27:25Speaker: But I mean, again, you know,
- 27:27Speaker: they know what animals look
- 27:28Speaker: like.
- 27:29Speaker: Animals don't have giant yellow
- 27:30Speaker: eyes and float around and dodge
- 27:33Speaker: bullets and, you know, that sort
- 27:34Speaker: of thing.
- 27:36Speaker: And that's why sometimes it just it just tickles me because you
- 27:41Speaker: can't make people understand.
- 27:42Speaker: These were country boys that could hit anything, right?
- 27:45Speaker: You know, they could hit a rabbit running and a squirrel
- 27:47Speaker: out of a tree.
- 27:49Speaker: So they were hitting these three foot tall beings.
- 27:51Speaker: So, you know, it just kills me when somebody comes and says,
- 27:54Speaker: oh, it was just a monkey.
- 27:56Speaker: Or it was just, oh, hey, if it
- 27:58Speaker: was something living, it would
- 28:00Speaker: be splattered all over the
- 28:02Speaker: place.
- 28:03Speaker: Yeah.
- 28:03Speaker: I mean, they were hunters and stuff now.
- 28:06Speaker: Um, was your dad the type to.
- 28:08Speaker: I mean, because I know they were kind of joking around that day,
- 28:10Speaker: but I mean, was your dad the type to like, keep us, you know,
- 28:12Speaker: keep something like this going for so many years with, you
- 28:15Speaker: know, without coming out and saying, okay, that was a joke.
- 28:18Speaker: I mean, was he a jokester or anything like that?
- 28:20Speaker: No, no, my dad was the serious one.
- 28:23Speaker: Billy Ray was jokester.
- 28:24Speaker: My dad was serious.
- 28:26Speaker: I mean, whatever this was, it scared him to death.
- 28:31Speaker: He didn't like talking about it.
- 28:34Speaker: Uh, you know, of course, people would come forward every once in
- 28:36Speaker: a while and want to come talk to him about it.
- 28:38Speaker: He just wouldn't do it.
- 28:40Speaker: It was like before he passed away, they had there was
- 28:43Speaker: somebody from Germany trying to get Ahold of him, wanting to
- 28:46Speaker: talk to him, actually wanting to take him over to Germany, and he
- 28:49Speaker: just wouldn't do it.
- 28:52Speaker: I mean, it frightened him to death.
- 28:54Speaker: It you know, I'm surprised to
- 28:56Speaker: even talk to those two people
- 28:58Speaker: that came back in the sixties,
- 29:00Speaker: you know, when I was little,
- 29:01Speaker: because he just did not talk
- 29:03Speaker: about it.
- 29:04Speaker: But I guess he figured, well, the kids need to know because
- 29:06Speaker: they're going to find out.
- 29:08Speaker: Right.
- 29:09Speaker: And that kind and that kind of
- 29:11Speaker: takes away from the whole, they
- 29:13Speaker: just did this for money or
- 29:14Speaker: notoriety or attention because,
- 29:16Speaker: I mean, they didn't really get
- 29:18Speaker: any.
- 29:18Speaker: I mean, they got attention, but it was seemed to be unwanted and
- 29:20Speaker: they never really profited on.
- 29:23Speaker: Well, yeah, you know, you got to realize too, my grandmother and
- 29:26Speaker: uncle J.C. and them, they didn't have the money to go to the
- 29:29Speaker: movies and see things like this.
- 29:30Speaker: This is just an old country family that barely made it from
- 29:35Speaker: week to week, much less knew about such things.
- 29:38Speaker: They had a radio, but they didn't have anything else.
- 29:41Speaker: The only thing they had was, you know, the people they knew at
- 29:44Speaker: church, their neighbors and stuff like that.
- 29:47Speaker: They did not know such a thing existed.
- 29:50Speaker: And, you know, the only ones that would have are my dad and
- 29:54Speaker: Billy Ray, because of course, they traveled and they may have
- 29:57Speaker: known, I don't know, they may have not sure.
- 30:00Speaker: And, uh, um, but yeah, this is something that terrified them.
- 30:04Speaker: You know, it terrified those
- 30:06Speaker: three kids to this day, the two
- 30:08Speaker: younger ones will not speak of
- 30:10Speaker: this.
- 30:11Speaker: The older one, he used to, but he doesn't anymore.
- 30:16Speaker: Now, the kids that were there because there were eleven people
- 30:19Speaker: in the house, right?
- 30:21Speaker: Right.
- 30:21Speaker: There were several of those were children who never did they
- 30:25Speaker: actually see the creature, or have they just not talked?
- 30:28Speaker: Because that was under the impression from reading the book
- 30:29Speaker: that they didn't see anything.
- 30:30Speaker: They were just kind of like
- 30:32Speaker: huddling in the back bedroom or
- 30:33Speaker: something.
- 30:34Speaker: The older one did because the two smaller ones really didn't.
- 30:40Speaker: The older one did.
- 30:42Speaker: Mhm.
- 30:42Speaker: Um, he says that he, he got away because they my dad actually
- 30:49Speaker: told my Aunt Eileen to take him to the bedroom and hide the kids
- 30:53Speaker: under the bed, because he didn't know what these things were.
- 30:56Speaker: Sure.
- 30:56Speaker: If they were going to try to hurt them or what?
- 30:58Speaker: Mhm.
- 30:59Speaker: And so my uncle Lonnie got off the bed and, and went, ran to
- 31:04Speaker: the window to look.
- 31:05Speaker: And he looked out and there was one outside the window.
- 31:07Speaker: So he actually seen one.
- 31:09Speaker: Now the two smaller ones, I don't think they did.
- 31:12Speaker: They kind of blocked this out
- 31:15Speaker: because it was just so
- 31:16Speaker: terrifying.
- 31:17Speaker: My Aunt Mary, she's a little bitty thing.
- 31:19Speaker: She's a little bitty thing now, and I can't imagine these things
- 31:24Speaker: were probably as big as she was, if not bigger.
- 31:26Speaker: Oh my gosh, probably bigger because she was tiny.
- 31:29Speaker: And so I can't imagine.
- 31:31Speaker: And this is okay if you really want to know how true this story
- 31:38Speaker: is, this is a good thing.
- 31:41Speaker: I can tell you that will just show you when they had the Kelly
- 31:45Speaker: Festival every year, I would have to go and speak.
- 31:50Speaker: And so they would schedule for me to speak.
- 31:53Speaker: And so I'd always noticed that
- 31:55Speaker: my aunts, my aunt and my two
- 31:57Speaker: uncles would never come during
- 31:59Speaker: my speaker thing, you know, no
- 32:02Speaker: biggie.
- 32:03Speaker: That's all right, I didn't care.
- 32:04Speaker: I understood one year when I did it, my Aunt Mary was there, and
- 32:10Speaker: I think she must have not looked at the schedule or something.
- 32:13Speaker: But anyway, she stayed there.
- 32:15Speaker: She was out in the audience.
- 32:18Speaker: And after I was done with the story come off the stage, she
- 32:21Speaker: come up to me.
- 32:21Speaker: She was white as a sheet, And she told me, she said, oh my
- 32:28Speaker: gosh, it brought it all back.
- 32:29Speaker: I says, what do you mean?
- 32:31Speaker: And she said, it brought it all back.
- 32:34Speaker: She said, it's terrifying.
- 32:39Speaker: It scared her to death to hear that again, because all these
- 32:45Speaker: years she has put it in the back of her mind and has tried to
- 32:48Speaker: forget this ever existed, ever happened to them.
- 32:52Speaker: Then all of a sudden, here I am telling this story.
- 32:55Speaker: What happened that night?
- 32:57Speaker: She was there.
- 32:59Speaker: So she relived it.
- 33:02Speaker: She was terrified.
- 33:04Speaker: And if it didn't happen, if it was some made up story.
- 33:05Speaker: I mean, she wouldn't have had that reaction, most likely
- 33:08Speaker: because it wouldn't have been another thing that kind of makes
- 33:10Speaker: it more not to doubt anybody.
- 33:12Speaker: I'm a natural skeptic.
- 33:14Speaker: I like to have an open mind, but I do like to kind of think think
- 33:17Speaker: of things skeptically.
- 33:18Speaker: Yeah, I think that's just healthy.
- 33:20Speaker: Um, if they were, if it was some sort of prank.
- 33:23Speaker: I mean, you've got little children running around the
- 33:25Speaker: house and you're shooting guns in the house through the window.
- 33:28Speaker: I mean, that's taking things a little far for a prank, right?
- 33:32Speaker: I mean, so there definitely was, in my opinion, there was
- 33:35Speaker: definitely something there that they had that scared the heck
- 33:39Speaker: out of them.
- 33:40Speaker: Um, there's no doubt about that.
- 33:41Speaker: And they were shooting at something.
- 33:43Speaker: And that's what I try to make people understand when I do
- 33:45Speaker: speaker sessions and book stuff and all that kind of thing, I
- 33:49Speaker: try to make people understand, hey, whether it be paranormal,
- 33:53Speaker: whether it be alien, whether I don't know what it was, but
- 33:56Speaker: something happened to this family that night, whether you
- 34:00Speaker: want to believe it or not, something happened to this
- 34:03Speaker: family, something that caused them to panic so much to where
- 34:07Speaker: they all pile into the car and go to the police station in the
- 34:09Speaker: middle of the night.
- 34:11Speaker: And I gotta think, you know,
- 34:12Speaker: being these, you know, country
- 34:13Speaker: guys that are kind of probably
- 34:15Speaker: macho and, like, not exactly
- 34:17Speaker: how, you know, I'm gonna be
- 34:18Speaker: running scared into the police
- 34:20Speaker: station saying there's aliens
- 34:21Speaker: running around.
- 34:22Speaker: I mean, exactly, for that to
- 34:23Speaker: happen, you've got to really be
- 34:24Speaker: kind of frazzled, to say the
- 34:26Speaker: least.
- 34:26Speaker: Exactly.
- 34:26Speaker: You're not going to take your
- 34:27Speaker: fifty year old mama and your
- 34:29Speaker: little bitty, uh, two brothers
- 34:31Speaker: and, and sister out in the
- 34:34Speaker: middle of the night to the
- 34:35Speaker: police station seven miles down
- 34:36Speaker: the road.
- 34:37Speaker: If there isn't something happening there.
- 34:39Speaker: I wouldn't think so.
- 34:40Speaker: And then you don't.
- 34:41Speaker: And then you don't walk into a place and find it all shot up.
- 34:44Speaker: You know, they couldn't afford to shoot up their house and have
- 34:47Speaker: to refix it.
- 34:49Speaker: You know, there were poor people.
- 34:50Speaker: They couldn't do that.
- 34:51Speaker: You don't do that.
- 34:52Speaker: That's a good point.
- 34:53Speaker: Like, why would they have done that?
- 34:55Speaker: Yes.
- 34:56Speaker: Plus, you know, all the neighbors were hearing this.
- 34:58Speaker: In fact, one of the neighbors that lived behind them in the
- 35:01Speaker: next farm over heard the commotion going on and thought
- 35:04Speaker: they were having trouble with the animals or something.
- 35:06Speaker: He actually put on his boots, grabbed his flashlight and was
- 35:09Speaker: fixing head on out.
- 35:11Speaker: And then the gunshots started and he's like, nope, not gonna
- 35:16Speaker: have any of that, you know?
- 35:18Speaker: But I'll get shot before I get there.
- 35:20Speaker: No kidding.
- 35:20Speaker: Did that person see anything as far as like lights or hear, you
- 35:24Speaker: know, any of the see any creatures or anything like that
- 35:27Speaker: that I don't think they did.
- 35:28Speaker: They may have seen lights or something, but I don't know.
- 35:30Speaker: I know they didn't see any
- 35:31Speaker: creatures because they were the
- 35:33Speaker: only ones that saw the
- 35:34Speaker: creatures.
- 35:35Speaker: Nobody else seen the creatures.
- 35:37Speaker: And I've heard, I've heard so many different versions of the
- 35:39Speaker: story of heard.
- 35:40Speaker: You know, it's it's talked about
- 35:42Speaker: a lot among those in UFO, you
- 35:45Speaker: know, lore.
- 35:46Speaker: But what would you say is one of
- 35:47Speaker: the biggest misconceptions about
- 35:49Speaker: about what happened that night
- 35:50Speaker: that you hear over and over and
- 35:51Speaker: you're just like, that's not
- 35:52Speaker: what happened.
- 35:54Speaker: Is there something that's told
- 35:55Speaker: over and you're just, that's a
- 35:57Speaker: well, it's just the, the alcohol
- 35:59Speaker: thing.
- 36:00Speaker: Of course, that's one of the main questions I get asked at
- 36:02Speaker: every book thing I do.
- 36:05Speaker: Um, was there alcohol there that night?
- 36:06Speaker: No, there wasn't in the police report.
- 36:09Speaker: No alcohol was there.
- 36:10Speaker: They searched the premises.
- 36:12Speaker: Besides that, my grandmother was very, very religious.
- 36:15Speaker: She would not have alcohol around her kids.
- 36:18Speaker: So no, alcohol was not there.
- 36:20Speaker: And that is the that burns me up when people bring that up,
- 36:23Speaker: because the first thing people think Kentucky, it's hillbillies
- 36:28Speaker: and they got a moonshine still back in there.
- 36:30Speaker: Well, no, they didn't.
- 36:34Speaker: You know, my dad and Billy Ray didn't even live there.
- 36:37Speaker: They were on the road all the time.
- 36:38Speaker: The only ones that was there
- 36:39Speaker: with my grandmother and Uncle
- 36:41Speaker: Jake.
- 36:42Speaker: And ain't no way they could have done a moonshine still.
- 36:45Speaker: My grandmother wouldn't have done it anyway.
- 36:47Speaker: And your dad and your Billy Ray
- 36:49Speaker: worked at, uh, worked in
- 36:50Speaker: carnivals.
- 36:51Speaker: Is that right?
- 36:51Speaker: Yes.
- 36:52Speaker: Okay.
- 36:52Speaker: And they worked.
- 36:53Speaker: They were working in one in Evansville.
- 36:54Speaker: I guess, whenever all of this was going on.
- 36:56Speaker: It was stationed in Evansville
- 36:58Speaker: that that week weekend or
- 37:00Speaker: something.
- 37:01Speaker: Yep.
- 37:01Speaker: They traveled everywhere.
- 37:03Speaker: And then every was it every year there's, uh, the little green
- 37:07Speaker: men days down in Kelly.
- 37:08Speaker: What exactly what goes on down there?
- 37:10Speaker: What is that?
- 37:11Speaker: Well, there was until Covid hit, and ever since Covid, they
- 37:14Speaker: stopped doing it.
- 37:15Speaker: Yeah.
- 37:16Speaker: They haven't started back up.
- 37:17Speaker: I don't know if it ever is going to get started back up.
- 37:19Speaker: I think Covid kind of killed it
- 37:21Speaker: because it's all work and no
- 37:23Speaker: festivals.
- 37:25Speaker: Oh I bet.
- 37:26Speaker: Um, yeah, I mean, it is any money and work.
- 37:31Speaker: And I think they just kind of
- 37:33Speaker: eased off of it when Covid hit
- 37:36Speaker: and just haven't tried to do it
- 37:37Speaker: again.
- 37:37Speaker: I don't know, they'll try to do anything this year or not.
- 37:41Speaker: I wish they would because people really loved it.
- 37:43Speaker: I mean, it was nice little festival.
- 37:46Speaker: I'll have to check it out if they if they do it this year.
- 37:48Speaker: Yeah, it's pretty cool.
- 37:50Speaker: How are the neighbors and other
- 37:52Speaker: people in the towns around
- 37:53Speaker: there?
- 37:53Speaker: How did they treat your family after all of this?
- 37:56Speaker: Were they kind of ostracized or
- 37:58Speaker: made fun of or ridiculed, or did
- 38:01Speaker: people finally come around to
- 38:03Speaker: it?
- 38:03Speaker: Or how?
- 38:03Speaker: Well, you know, the people that
- 38:04Speaker: lived around there knew them the
- 38:06Speaker: best.
- 38:06Speaker: They knew better.
- 38:07Speaker: I mean, they knew that something happened that night.
- 38:10Speaker: They believed my grandmother
- 38:12Speaker: because of who she was for one,
- 38:14Speaker: um, Chief Greenwell, he believed
- 38:17Speaker: it wholeheartedly.
- 38:18Speaker: Another one of the officers, officer duties or duties or
- 38:23Speaker: whatever his name is.
- 38:25Speaker: Um, he believed it because both of them had experiences before
- 38:28Speaker: this happened and selves.
- 38:30Speaker: So they wholeheartedly, heartedly believed it.
- 38:32Speaker: And of course, like I said, the neighbors believed it because
- 38:34Speaker: they, they knew who they were.
- 38:36Speaker: Right.
- 38:37Speaker: And, um, the only people that really kind of laughed about it,
- 38:40Speaker: I think was outsiders, like people that lived in
- 38:43Speaker: Hopkinsville and, you know, other places kind of made well,
- 38:47Speaker: didn't kind of didn't make fun of it and didn't believe it.
- 38:50Speaker: And you know, which that's gonna
- 38:53Speaker: be even today, it's going to
- 38:55Speaker: happen.
- 38:56Speaker: But yeah, I mean, it's, it's quite a story that, I mean, I, I
- 39:01Speaker: could see why your dad was kind of like, we're not telling
- 39:03Speaker: anybody anything because this is just, we're going to be
- 39:05Speaker: ridiculed and you can't it's a no win situation, honestly.
- 39:09Speaker: Um, if you have something like that happen, they didn't have
- 39:11Speaker: cameras to take pictures of, of what was going on.
- 39:14Speaker: So they don't have any proof and right.
- 39:17Speaker: And they I probably wouldn't
- 39:18Speaker: have thought about taking
- 39:19Speaker: pictures even if they had of
- 39:21Speaker: because well, yeah, to them that
- 39:23Speaker: was terrifying.
- 39:24Speaker: I mean, you guys think, okay, Matt, think about this.
- 39:27Speaker: If you're sitting at home, right?
- 39:29Speaker: I like to think of it this way.
- 39:31Speaker: If you're sitting at home and
- 39:32Speaker: you're sitting there watching
- 39:33Speaker: TV, not bothering nobody, just
- 39:37Speaker: taking it easy and all of a
- 39:38Speaker: sudden here you look toward one
- 39:40Speaker: of your windows and there stands
- 39:41Speaker: a little three foot tall, being
- 39:42Speaker: with big yellow eyes looking in
- 39:44Speaker: at you.
- 39:44Speaker: Oh, yeah.
- 39:45Speaker: Are you going to do.
- 39:46Speaker: Oh, I'm out.
- 39:46Speaker: I'm, I'm.
- 39:47Speaker: I'm gone.
- 39:48Speaker: Exactly.
- 39:49Speaker: Exactly.
- 39:50Speaker: I'm not grabbing a camera.
- 39:51Speaker: I'm probably just gonna run.
- 39:53Speaker: Exactly.
- 39:54Speaker: And you know, that kills me also, because people will tell
- 39:57Speaker: me, oh, if I were in that situation, I would have invited
- 40:00Speaker: them in the house, or I would have shook their head.
- 40:03Speaker: Right.
- 40:03Speaker: And I'm like, no, you wouldn't
- 40:05Speaker: if you would have dropped
- 40:06Speaker: everything, peed your pants, ran
- 40:07Speaker: and hide.
- 40:10Speaker: It does make you wonder what they were doing because, I mean,
- 40:12Speaker: they just they were they kept coming, even though they were
- 40:13Speaker: being shot at.
- 40:14Speaker: They weren't really it didn't seem like they were attacking
- 40:17Speaker: necessarily, but they were just like curious or something.
- 40:20Speaker: Um, yes.
- 40:21Speaker: Weird.
- 40:21Speaker: And that's what my grandmother
- 40:22Speaker: was thinking too, because my
- 40:24Speaker: grandmother, being the person
- 40:25Speaker: she was, she was soft hearted
- 40:26Speaker: about everything.
- 40:27Speaker: Right.
- 40:27Speaker: And she thought, well, what if
- 40:31Speaker: these little things were in
- 40:32Speaker: trouble?
- 40:33Speaker: What if they needed help?
- 40:34Speaker: Well, my dad, being the man he was, was like, we don't know
- 40:40Speaker: what these are.
- 40:40Speaker: We don't know what they want.
- 40:42Speaker: I'm not letting them in the house to say, you know, well,
- 40:46Speaker: it's not like you guys can help fix their ship or something if
- 40:48Speaker: it's broken down anyway.
- 40:49Speaker: So it's like, there's no good that can come from this.
- 40:52Speaker: Exactly.
- 40:53Speaker: You know, why are these little creatures, you know, are they
- 40:55Speaker: here to eat us?
- 40:56Speaker: What?
- 40:57Speaker: You know?
- 40:57Speaker: Oh. No kidding.
- 40:58Speaker: So, you know, that was his thing.
- 41:01Speaker: Shoot first and ask questions later.
- 41:03Speaker: Yeah, I can I can definitely understand.
- 41:05Speaker: What advice would you have for
- 41:07Speaker: someone who may have a story to
- 41:09Speaker: tell, but they're afraid to do
- 41:11Speaker: so because they're afraid of
- 41:12Speaker: being ridiculed.
- 41:12Speaker: What advice would you give for that person?
- 41:15Speaker: Just find somebody that's going to listen to you, because that's
- 41:19Speaker: a big thing.
- 41:20Speaker: Because every time I go
- 41:21Speaker: somewhere to do a book thing or
- 41:25Speaker: whatever, um, um, I have people
- 41:28Speaker: come up to me and tell me a
- 41:29Speaker: story never fails because I will
- 41:33Speaker: listen.
- 41:34Speaker: Just find somebody that will listen to you and, you know, not
- 41:39Speaker: laugh at you.
- 41:40Speaker: Yeah.
- 41:40Speaker: There's going to be that person
- 41:41Speaker: out there that's not going to
- 41:43Speaker: laugh at you, believe me,
- 41:44Speaker: because you would be surprised
- 41:46Speaker: that people that are walking
- 41:47Speaker: around out here that have a
- 41:49Speaker: story, that is afraid to say
- 41:52Speaker: anything.
- 41:53Speaker: I'd say most everybody has some sort of weird story.
- 41:55Speaker: They've they've had that they just keep to themselves.
- 41:58Speaker: Everybody does.
- 41:58Speaker: Yes, yes.
- 41:59Speaker: Whether it's lights in the sky.
- 42:02Speaker: Um, you know, I had a girl that I used to work with.
- 42:04Speaker: She used to go to the next town over to a community college at
- 42:09Speaker: night time after work.
- 42:11Speaker: And she said one night after work, there was these red lights
- 42:15Speaker: following her, you know.
- 42:16Speaker: Yeah.
- 42:17Speaker: The from town to town.
- 42:19Speaker: This is country.
- 42:20Speaker: So, you know, this is a big long country forty five minute drive.
- 42:25Speaker: And so, you know, she had these red lights following her.
- 42:29Speaker: She didn't know what they were.
- 42:30Speaker: They scared her to death.
- 42:31Speaker: She couldn't tell what it was.
- 42:32Speaker: It wasn't a car.
- 42:34Speaker: You know, a car wouldn't have red lights in the front of it.
- 42:36Speaker: And you know, what was it?
- 42:38Speaker: You know, if I have had people
- 42:39Speaker: tell me they seen something just
- 42:43Speaker: come out of the sky and just
- 42:45Speaker: come right down in the street,
- 42:48Speaker: you know, just crazy stuff like
- 42:49Speaker: that.
- 42:50Speaker: You know, I've seen lights that can't be explained.
- 42:53Speaker: Everybody, just about everybody has had some kind of experience,
- 42:57Speaker: whether it be something like that or extraterrestrial.
- 43:02Speaker: I mean, uh, paranormal.
- 43:04Speaker: Um, I've had people come to me
- 43:05Speaker: and tell me about Bigfoot
- 43:07Speaker: stories.
- 43:08Speaker: It's a, it's a whole big world out there.
- 43:10Speaker: There's all kinds of stuff going on.
- 43:11Speaker: It's fascinating.
- 43:12Speaker: Yeah, I agree.
- 43:13Speaker: What makes it exciting?
- 43:15Speaker: That's right and I agree.
- 43:16Speaker: I think that's great advice.
- 43:17Speaker: Just find somebody who will listen.
- 43:18Speaker: And everyone else can just kind
- 43:19Speaker: of slowly wander away and shake
- 43:21Speaker: their heads.
- 43:21Speaker: But talk, talk, talk to the
- 43:23Speaker: people that want to listen to
- 43:24Speaker: it.
- 43:25Speaker: Exactly.
- 43:27Speaker: Geraldine, I want to thank you
- 43:28Speaker: again for taking time out of
- 43:29Speaker: your day to tell this fantastic
- 43:31Speaker: story.
- 43:31Speaker: I really appreciate it.
- 43:33Speaker: Well, I appreciate you asking.
- 43:35Speaker: It's like I said, it's a good story.
- 43:36Speaker: And any day you can talk about the Green Man is a good day.
- 43:48Speaker: She is such a gifted storyteller.
- 43:49Speaker: I could just listen to her for hours.
- 43:51Speaker: Love it.
- 43:53Speaker: If you're interested in picking up any of Geraldine's books,
- 43:55Speaker: check out my show notes, which you can find at River City
- 43:58Speaker: Mystery dot com.
- 44:00Speaker: You'll find all the links there.
- 44:03Speaker: Thanks so much for listening, I appreciate it, and until next
- 44:06Speaker: time, take care.
