- 0:02A listener production.
- 0:04Welcome to the Motorsport Brief.
- 0:06A look ahead to supercars in Tassie and cue that Miami Vice music as we debrief Formula One.
- 0:15G'day everybody.
- 0:16I love that show by the way.
- 0:17It's Rusty here.
- 0:17Welcome to the Shortcast.
- 0:19Two interviews for you on this one radio style.
- 0:22Shortly to Matt Hickey from the Daily Telegraph and news.com.au to talk Formula One.
- 0:27But first we are going to go straight to the Apple Isle.
- 0:30No mucking around today.
- 0:31Round four of the Supercars Championship is on this weekend.
- 0:34The Snowy River Caravans Super 440 at Simmons Plains.
- 0:39Haven't had today's guest on for a little while, and I'm delighted to get him back on.
- 0:42From Tickford Racing, driver of the Castrol Mustang, hello Thomas Randall.
- 0:47Hello Rusty, how are you?
- 0:48Oh, I'm fantastic.
- 0:49Hey, we are spending way too much time together.
- 0:51You did a very good job on commentary last weekend at the Speed Series.
- 0:55You did that in conjunction with a drive in the Mercedes-AMG GT3 as well.
- 1:01Does that help or kind of require a bit of a reset when you get back in the supercar?
- 1:06I'm a believer that miles have just got to be good, don't they?
- 1:09Oh, they do.
- 1:09Firstly, I don't think we spend enough time together as it is, frankly.
- 1:13So I don't know where that's coming from.
- 1:15Oh, no.
- 1:17Now, look, that's the first time I've ever done double duties in that sense with doing the broadcast commitments and then also driving as well, which I think is quite unique.
- 1:27And the way that the schedule kind of worked out...
- 1:30with the GT World Challenge, the fact that we were racing at SMP under lights, the schedule actually worked out really well to be able to do both.
- 1:38And we had a lot of fun on that Saturday night with the grid walk.
- 1:41And the fact on that first race, the AM driver or the bronze driver starts.
- 1:46So I don't jump in the car until halfway through.
- 1:49So it was quite cool.
- 1:50You letting me loose, you and the guys letting me loose with the mic and running amok on the grid and going and interviewing different drivers and stirring them up.
- 1:58So that was quite fun.
- 1:59But...
- 2:00I really enjoyed it and it made for good TV, I thought, and I just have a lot of fun and it's such a cool thing to be part of that broadcast as well.
- 2:10And not that I didn't respect anyone that does it because it's a hell of a job.
- 2:16There's so much pressure involved in that, but being on the other side of that and just seeing what goes in and the production side of things, it's pretty impressive what you did.
- 2:26whether it's you, Stubbsy, Kralsey, Isabella, do to make the show happen.
- 2:31You've slotted in with these, mate, and you do both jobs, I think, incredibly well.
- 2:36Can we preview Tassie and put the supercars hat on?
- 2:39This is a great little bullring, this place.
- 2:40Do you enjoy it?
- 2:42Ninth in the standings at the moment, only two points off Anton Di Pasquale.
- 2:46So it's kind of close in that battle as you head in too, isn't it?
- 2:48It really is.
- 2:49And this place has got so much history, just the state, Tasmania, so famous for, you know, holding the Australian Grand Prix back in the day at Longford.
- 2:59And I think it's, like you said, a bullring and it resembles the shape of a pork chop, actually, this place.
- 3:07And sometimes, you know, you can carry on like a pork chop around here.
- 3:11It's got three braking zones, as we all know, and because it's so small and so tight, any little mistake can be very costly.
- 3:19So yeah, we had really good form last year.
- 3:22Cam and I are locking out the front row.
- 3:23I got my pole position, my one and only pole position last year there.
- 3:28Yeah, it's going to be a busy weekend.
- 3:29The weather actually looks really good, so that's handy.
- 3:32But one thing we really look for is which way the wind direction is.
- 3:35And leading on to that is the slipstream in qualifying, because that could give you a tenth of a second, and a tenth around here could be six or seven spots.
- 3:44Can we just delve into that in a preview sense a little deeper?
- 3:47Firstly, tyres are going to be a talking point this weekend, and for fans, probably in a good way too, aren't they?
- 3:53Yeah, I think so.
- 3:54And if we wind the clock back around to New Zealand and Topor, the format there was the same as where we're about to go, except we've done us flip on the tyres.
- 4:03So at New Zealand, we ran predominantly on the new 2025 soft and we did one race on the super soft.
- 4:11But for this round, it's the opposite.
- 4:12We do most of the running...
- 4:14on the super soft and we do the one race on the soft so when we qualify for the soft race on saturday we won't have actually done any running on it that'll be the first time we actually do laps similar to what we did in new zealand so it's going to throw a spanner in the works but it's the same for everyone and i've been explaining to people that that ask about the format changes i think it's a really
- 4:37good thing for the fans.
- 4:39For us, it's harder work and the engineers, it's harder, but it just means that you can't copy and paste strategies from one race to the next because you're on a different tyre.
- 4:47You don't know how that tyre is going to behave, handle or how it's going to degrade.
- 4:51So that's where I think having the two compounds makes for more
- 4:55exciting racing, if you like.
- 4:57So, yeah, qualifying is going to be everything around Tassie and fingers crossed we can get that cast of my saying up the front.
- 5:03Scott Sinclair said in a preview column this week on the Supercars website, and he's obviously there in a technical advisory kind of capacity to the broadcast nowadays, that getting a set-up there was always very difficult.
- 5:17He found it hard for them to find the sort of secret source and that he, I think, almost described it like a place of three parts
- 5:25and finding something that works well across all of those three parts is not easy.
- 5:31Do you share that?
- 5:32And will anything from that qualifying form for you last year help in 2025?
- 5:36I would agree with that, with Scott's notes, because...
- 5:40It is quite challenging the different sectors that we have at Simmons Plains.
- 5:44For example, Turn 1 and 2, it's really the only right-hander we have on the track, but you also need that lateral support.
- 5:51So you can sort of set the car up with what we call asymmetric cambers.
- 5:57So the left rear is different to the right rear.
- 5:59Predominantly, when we go racing in Australia, the cambers on both sides of the car, normally you put it in the same, but when you go to a track like Tassie, where it's
- 6:09predominantly left-hand corners uh and you've only got one right-hander you would think okay maybe we can favor the car for left-handers to support the right side of the car but then on top of that the track goes up and down there's bumps you need to have really good braking and then you want to get the car off the corner well especially that hairpin it's the slowest corner we go to first gear and if you can't get the the turn and the drive off there that's just going to really hurt you down that back straight so yeah like scott said it's
- 6:36It can be challenging to nail the setup, but I think because we're on predominantly the same tyre that we were on last year, I'd like to think that would help us with our setup and how we're going to sort of roll the cars out.
- 6:49So we've just got to make the most of the practice sessions and then I think it's going to be everyone racing because chief stations are qualifying again like we saw last year.
- 6:58And then on Sunday...
- 6:59Sunday, longest race I think we've seen in Tasmania since 2019 and you can very easily go down a lap there with pit stops and so on can't you and you've talked about at the commencement of previewing things here about the effect of the slipstream down the back straight and how beneficial that can be.
- 7:16Well, that's a really good point you raised, Rusty, about going a lap down.
- 7:19I think you only have to be 20 seconds off the leader or something like that, or 15 seconds off the leader.
- 7:24And when you pit, you will go a lap down.
- 7:26And then that also plays a part on the leaders because if you pit, go a lap down, you might come out just in front of the leaders and then they've got to work out, are we going to pit or are we going to have to stay behind this car?
- 7:36Traffic.
- 7:37Yeah, correct.
- 7:38Traffic's a big thing in the race and there's overcuts, there's undercuts.
- 7:42There's not
- 7:43a lot of Thai deck here relative to New Zealand.
- 7:46So that's going to play a big part in what you do with strategy, whether you try and stay out with the clear air or you go early and see how you go.
- 7:55But then, like you said, on those races on Saturday, do you take –
- 8:00rear tyres, right tyres, three, four.
- 8:03I think you'll be seeing a lot of different things happening on Saturday, which is really cool.
- 8:07Busy little stretch too, because cars arrive back relatively late from New Zealand to get turned around for here.
- 8:13Then you've got the big long haul over the Nullarbor to Perth.
- 8:16Darwin's not all that far away either.
- 8:18So in the mapping out of how this portion of the year goes, you've got to be a little bit careful, but at the same time, be as brave as you all have for those variety of winners we've enjoyed today.
- 8:30so far in 2025.
- 8:30Well, Rusty, I think it's trying to find the balance between how risky you go versus conservative and higher risk, higher reward.
- 8:39But then also you can have dramas and challenges with that.
- 8:43And a good point you touched on is that this year the cars went to New Zealand via sea freight and our cars only got back on Thursday last week.
- 8:52So it's been a very busy journey.
- 8:54period for the guys and and i think the trucks were packed monday so they only had sort of two and a half days with the cars and then like you touched on we get back from tassie and we go all the way over the nullabor to perth then there's a weekend off and go to darwin so it's there's a lot of a lot of travel i feel for dodge out truckie he's got a lot of a lot of miles to catch up on but uh he loves it and um yeah and
- 9:18It'll be interesting to see what happens over the next few rounds, who can capitalise the most on this short stretch of racing.
- 9:24He's a legend.
- 9:25Now, quickly to finish here.
- 9:26Firstly, spotted a little something on the V8 Sleuth website, which I loved.
- 9:31The Piano, right?
- 9:33This is an ABC series.
- 9:34You have appeared there, and they encourage the people taking part to play in public spaces.
- 9:40So tell people where you played and obviously go and try and go and find, um, the episode and watch it.
- 9:46And there was some glowing comments from none other than Harry Connick Jr. Mate.
- 9:50That's seriously cool.
- 9:51It is.
- 9:52I, um, yeah, it was, it was a great opportunity.
- 9:54I, um,
- 9:56I did it down at Southern Cross Station.
- 9:58This was towards the end of last year.
- 10:00I think it was after the Stand Down 500, actually.
- 10:03I was a bit nervous, to be honest, because you are in a public space and they literally just put an upright piano in the middle of Southern Cross Station and...
- 10:15Yeah, we sort of rolled in and I got to play on the piano.
- 10:19And Amanda Keller is the host for the show, and she's absolutely gorgeous, you know.
- 10:23She's got such a warm heart.
- 10:25Great human being, yes.
- 10:25Yeah, great human being.
- 10:27And, yeah, that was really impressive.
- 10:29And I haven't watched enough of the show yet.
- 10:31All the episodes are actually...
- 10:33on demand.
- 10:34I sound like I work for the ABC here, but all the episodes are on demand on ABC.
- 10:41I think I'm second episode, but I think it's actually getting shown this the same day or Sunday night of the Tasmania Super 440 on ABC.
- 10:51But yeah, Harry Connick Jr. was pretty cool.
- 10:52I had no idea.
- 10:54that he was there until after the segment happened and we all sort of got together at the end of the episode, which you'll see, and he said some pretty cool things.
- 11:04He said, man, you drive a race car and you play the piano?
- 11:07Like, that's just so unfair.
- 11:11Yeah, he was pretty cool, and he wants to try and get out to a race.
- 11:13I have no idea how to organise that, but it would be pretty cool to get him out to a race at some point.
- 11:19Hell yeah.
- 11:20I won't spoil any more of it then.
- 11:21Let people go and watch it for his assessment of you.
- 11:25To finish, after the break, we're going to be talking a bit of Formula One with Matt Hickey from news.com.au.
- 11:31Can I get a thought from you as we lead into that?
- 11:33I mean, obviously, Oscar Piastri on fire at the moment.
- 11:36Tough week for Jack Doohan in the same breath.
- 11:40I mean, you're someone who walked a bit of the European path for a while.
- 11:43And I know you still follow it very closely.
- 11:45Well, firstly on Oscar, I mean, he's just unbelievable, isn't he?
- 11:49What a talent.
- 11:51I kind of envy how cool, calm and collected he is.
- 11:54And you just don't see him make a mistake, which is absolutely incredible.
- 11:57And the way that he raced Max, I mean, just look at the way he raced Max versus the way Lando raced Max.
- 12:03I mean, he just studied Max very carefully and he managed to get it done in such a
- 12:11quick and easy way relative to Lando.
- 12:15And, I mean, he is racing a four-time world champion as well.
- 12:18So I think, yeah, look out.
- 12:22I'm tossing up whether I buy some tickets to Abu Dhabi already going and watching him.
- 12:27I think there'll be a lot of Aussies doing that.
- 12:28But, yeah, parallel to that with Jack Doohan, I mean...
- 12:33F1 at the moment is just so brutal with rookies.
- 12:36Personally, I think he deserved longer in the seat and he just out-qualified Gasly for the Grand Prix in Miami.
- 12:43And personally, I don't think he had anywhere to go at turn one and it was just an unfortunate DNF.
- 12:49And that whole team at the moment, I don't know what's going on at Endstone because they've...
- 12:55Oli Oates has now resigned, who was basically running Alpine.
- 12:58You've got Flavio Briatore's in there.
- 13:02And now, frankly, Colapinto's stepped up or they've done a driver swap.
- 13:06And, yeah, I'm not sure if I'd want to be in that team at the moment.
- 13:09No, I agree.
- 13:10It's all going on over there.
- 13:11Beautifully put, mate.
- 13:12Hey, we're going to let you go now.
- 13:13Have a fantastic weekend in Tassie.
- 13:15I know the natural thing in the media is to try and bring up what transpired last year.
- 13:22The one thing I know about you from having conversations off the track, you put that behind you very, very quickly and you're all eyes forward.
- 13:30Go well there at Simmons Plains this weekend and thanks for coming back on the podcast.
- 13:33You're welcome.
- 13:34Thanks for having me, Rusty.
- 13:35Appreciate it.
- 13:35A quick break on this edition of the Motorsport Brief.
- 13:38When we come back from supercars at Simmons to some sun and fun in Miami and everything happening in the world of Formula One.
- 13:46That's next.
- 13:49You're listening to Rusty's Garage.
- 13:50For this ep of The Shorty, we have two interviews for you.
- 13:53Before the break, a pre-brief with supercars driver Thomas Randall from Tasmania.
- 13:59And for this second part, it's a debrief on F1 after round six of 24 for the season.
- 14:06For the convo, we're joined by Matt Hickey from The Daily Telegraph and News Mastheads.
- 14:11It's his first time on the pod, but he brings a
- 14:14proper love of formula one to the mic hello mate thank you for coming on absolute pleasure to be on huge huge honor and a bit going on in the world of motorsport at the moment as well bit going on is an understatement can we you know begin this with a kind of broad overview about the way the australian public has reacted to this not just because of drive to survive but i mean i think oscar was third page of the daily telly the other day i mean there's real thirst beyond the sphere of motorsport for what he's doing at the moment isn't there
- 14:42Yeah, there certainly is.
- 14:44You look at a guy like Oscar Piastri, maybe doesn't quite have the big personality that a Daniel Ricciardo has, but people have really grown to love him.
- 14:51And I think it's the humility, the calmness.
- 14:54And what's not to love when you've got a guy who, let's be honest, in the most recent race, outsmarted one of...
- 15:01Probably the greatest drivers of all time will go down in Max Verstappen to win that race.
- 15:05So people are loving Oscar.
- 15:08They're loving his calmness and his ability to just get the job done.
- 15:11And he never seems to get flustered.
- 15:13Can I expand on just what you've spoken about there?
- 15:15And that is the reaction that Max Verstappen is having to Oscar Piastri.
- 15:20So on more than one occasion now, we've seen Oscar attack, pass, hold his ground and...
- 15:27And it's not as though Max doesn't put up a fight.
- 15:30He puts up a hell of a fight.
- 15:31But there is something in this here where he realises the kind of stone-cold hard player that Oscar is.
- 15:40And there's a bit of respect in that.
- 15:41And I actually feel, in asking you this question, Matt, that Lando is having a tougher time getting into that space, even though he and Max have been friends for a long time.
- 15:51Yeah.
- 15:52Well, we saw it on turn one, didn't we, with Lando, where he probably got a little over-eager knowing even though he had the better car.
- 15:59And that's what a lot of people will raise when you put that question forward to us, is the fact that, oh, well, McLaren's got the better car, so he probably should pass Max anyway.
- 16:07But let's be honest, Max has beaten a lot of people in a worse car than those that he's beaten.
- 16:13And this time, Oscar, again, it's that calmness.
- 16:16And he's spoken about it himself.
- 16:18He doesn't really know where it comes from, Oscar Piastri.
- 16:20He just, it's a thing that he's got.
- 16:23winning championships in F3 and F2 set yourself up so well.
- 16:27And again, as you said, he's just outsmarting him at the moment, which is a remarkable thing to say for a guy in his third F1 season.
- 16:34The move in conjunction with Mark Webber when they ultimately went Alpine to McLaren is a masterstroke.
- 16:41I know we're three years effectively into that now, but I'm highlighting that because of the dramas that Alpine is now
- 16:49Going through, I mean, we've seen Oliver Oakes walk away this week.
- 16:54Now the move that Jack Doohan will go back to a reserve role and Franco Colopinto will come in.
- 16:59What do you make of all that?
- 17:01Yeah, it's remarkable, isn't it?
- 17:02And it's funny, a lot of people are actually resurfacing Oscar Piastri's tweet at the time, which is at the F1.
- 17:08world of blaze where he said this is actually incorrect i'm not doing this and it is a master stroke i just feel so sorry for jack doing and i think even without the green and gold colored glasses that that we may have on i think the rest of the f1 world goes geez this guy was a little bit hard done by wasn't you look at
- 17:25Really, from the outset, even before the very first race in Australia, there was already talks of him being replaced.
- 17:31Now it's happened.
- 17:32And now Alpine have also thrown out this, oh, well, it's not a permanent move for Colopinto.
- 17:36He's only got five races and then will reassess, which I think is their way maybe of trying to save some face, a little bit of a PR stunt on that front.
- 17:43I think if you compare the results too with Jack and Oscar Piastri, yes, okay, there's a couple of numbers that are certainly stronger in Pierre's favour.
- 17:52Thomas Randall was with us just before the break.
- 17:54I mean, he talked about the fact that Jack had outqualified Pierre for the first time.
- 17:58You know, there were glimpses there, and I just feel that the game is so tough now.
- 18:04The rookies are not given...
- 18:06a lot of time to prove themselves, particularly when the reality is the ingredients and the framework there at Alpine were not right for that.
- 18:15Yeah, exactly.
- 18:16And people will look at some of his results post-race without actually watching the race themselves and go, oh, okay, well, he had another DNF, he had another crash.
- 18:24But you look at even the most recent race, Turn 1 incident, not...
- 18:27Not a lot he could have done in that situation that he was put in.
- 18:31And I think this season has been a big reminder of the cutthroat nature of Formula One.
- 18:35You look at Liam Lawson, for instance.
- 18:37Now, many would also agree that he probably wasn't given a fair enough crack.
- 18:41People have to remember that these cars are all set up very differently from team to team.
- 18:47And it will take people a little while to get into it.
- 18:50But if they're not given the chance, then we never get to see potentially where they could end up.
- 18:54Does Ferrari, I think I saw someone suggest somewhere today that maybe they should start focusing on 2026, the new regulations, a new car coming in and so on.
- 19:04I mean, it is such a shame to think that that might be the move on the chessboard that they begin to look at.
- 19:12And we're only, what are we, six races in?
- 19:14Yeah, it's the perennial discussion, right, when you've got new regulations coming in is ridiculous.
- 19:18What now are the teams who really, when you look at the battle at the top, who are actually in and amongst it?
- 19:25We heard Lewis Hamilton's frustrations recently as well with, I think, some of the sassiest team radio that I might have ever heard in the history of Formula One.
- 19:34And it is a shame because that driver pairing, the iconic red car, of course...
- 19:41It's leading that way.
- 19:42When you look at whether they're fourth in the standings, it doesn't look like they're going to get close to McLaren, Mercedes and Red Bull on a consistent basis.
- 19:49We might see a race here or there.
- 19:51So you could have a spot on view of that in terms of looking ahead because as we all know, new regulations come in and the game changes once again.
- 19:59Max is unbelievable, what he does with that car.
- 20:02One lap pace of the Red Bull is still very, very handy.
- 20:06We've seen that in qualifying on more than one occasion now, but it is as though he's starting to find it tougher to fight with one arm behind his back when the races play out.
- 20:15Yeah, certainly.
- 20:15That race pace has been huge for McLaren, that consistency across the entirety of a race.
- 20:21And I think now we're actually seeing...
- 20:24just how good Max Verstappen is in terms of his driving talent because no longer do Red Bull have the best car on the grid.
- 20:32And in the past when they have, of course, his teammate, whether it would be Sergio or in the past Daniel Ricciardo, has been up there with him and fighting with him.
- 20:40Now that the car's not as good, we're just seeing how good the driver is because the gap between him and his teammate...
- 20:46whether it be Tsunoda or earlier Liam Lawson is lengthening.
- 20:50But, I mean, he's always going to be up for the fight.
- 20:53Just whether he can actually stick with them in the papaya is another big question.
- 20:57The governing body is in an interesting phase at the moment, hearing that Carlos Sainz Sr. has thrown his name into the ring for consideration for the top job there of the FIA.
- 21:09I think there would be plenty of people that would welcome that.
- 21:12Clearly, there is a lot of...
- 21:15unhappiness or things that aren't right at the moment in the governing body and a change I think by a lot of people would probably be welcomed if he was to you know fully go down that path Carlos.
- 21:28Yeah the concern I think for the FIA at the moment is losing the drivers at the moment and I think that the swearing, fining and banning played a pretty big role in that and that's certainly been that kind of PR story.
- 21:39that's got around and it seems a little bit over the top.
- 21:42I mean, we as F1 fans, we love to hear what's going on behind the wheel.
- 21:49Of course, you can't expect drivers not to react emotionally in the heat of the moment with what they're going through and what they're putting their bodies through.
- 21:56So I think that was a big misstep, even if it was maybe when you really put it down, not a massive thing in terms of the sport itself, but in terms of PR and fans and the drivers themselves, I think that was a misstep that potentially could come back to haunt them down.
- 22:11I got the read wrong.
- 22:12You're absolutely right.
- 22:13To finish here...
- 22:14Daniel Ricciardo, we understand that he might have snuck into the paddock at Albert Park this year.
- 22:19He had his Enchante clothing brand in Chapel Street there in Melbourne and so on.
- 22:24He's been quiet in that whole post-driving period, if you will, which we...
- 22:32I'd love to see him maybe have a crack at a Le Mans 24-hour.
- 22:36Maybe someone could twist his arm for a Bathurst 1000.
- 22:38Do you think we'll see him behind the wheel of something again?
- 22:41Or has the page been closed and has he moved on?
- 22:46I think so.
- 22:47Somewhere along the line, we will see him behind the wheel of something again.
- 22:50When that is, is the very big question.
- 22:52He's obviously very happy with his, you know, he's got his wine out now as well and his clothing line and he seems to be, you know, loving life.
- 22:59We see every now and again some social media videos pop up of Danny Rick just loving his life, which I really love to see because those last few years when he was under so much scrutiny and copping so much heat, he deserves probably to let some steam off and go out and enjoy himself away from the public eye.
- 23:16I do think, though, with all of these drivers, they do get the itch again.
- 23:20Obviously, we'd love to see him at something like Bathurst.
- 23:22Imagine the crowd's going nuts for Daniel Ricciardo there.
- 23:25We might see him over in the States.
- 23:26We know he's affinity for NASCAR and things like that.
- 23:28So I think we will see him, but when that is, is the big question.
