- 2:32of all man hunters, the detective who's ability of solving crime is unequal in
- 2:37the history of detective fiction, Nick Cutter, Master Detective Night's Curious Adventure,
- 2:44The Flying Duck Murders, Nick and the Gold. Unless you think more of
- 2:57a large fat seas than you do of your life, I advise you to
- 3:00throw up the case at once. Apparently we don't look at this in the
- 3:02same light, Mister dal Repple, I expect danger and I prepare to meet
- 3:07it. I suppose you know that two other detectives have come out of this
- 3:09wild Montana country where the Flying Duck mine is located, trying to find the
- 3:14trouble. Do you know that neither of them live to tell what they found,
- 3:19how they killed mister They went crazy? Miss Bowen guest to the San
- 3:23Francisco man fell over a cliff. Well Riley, the man from Chicago dropped
- 3:27six hundred feet down the main shaft of the mine. Very interesting. I
- 3:30feel quite sure that Nick faith you inquire for whom you're acting, mister car
- 3:36Him you may mister Cecil Trenwick, an old friend of my father's and a
- 3:38large shareholder and the Flying Duck mine. He said that you'd cooperate with me
- 3:43in every possible way. I shall do what I can so good. I
- 3:46should like you to give me a letter to the superintendent of the mine telling
- 3:50him that I'm a good workman and that you promised me a job. I
- 3:53shall disguise myself as a miner using the name Dave Jarvis. Very well,
- 4:00m you said your name will be Dave Jarvis. Dragon'll do what you want.

- 5:17to take care of my own futue. So mister Dalrymple is in on the
- 5:31deal. He did goby up to his neck. Well, at least we
- 5:35start off with one good hot prospect. What do we do? Now,
- 5:39get into your miner's office and then take this note down to this address and
- 5:42give it to Night Crosby. The mine super I remember your name's Dave Jarvis
- 5:46and Crosby to give you a job in the middle. Okay, Nick,
- 5:48Then what my first and foremost keep your eyes open. Crosbie will believe you're
- 5:53Nick Carter, so watch out for him. You'll try to put you out
- 5:57of the way. And don't forget Scby the detectives from Chicago and both team
- 6:00degree. Well, it's gonna be different with the guy from New York.
- 6:02Patsy. You wait here at the hotel where we can get in touch with
- 6:05you if we need you. All Right, it's going, Scubby. I'm
- 6:09going out to the mine right away. You wait on right up with Crosby
- 6:11and watch out for him. Right Nick, I'll keep one eye on him

- 6:55of Kansas City. Any objection to me is sticking around a while looking things
- 6:59over. No no, no, mister King. Just as long as you
- 7:01say something good about us in your article, you want me to show you

- 7:29with the king they crushed you are very fine. And they then through screw
- 7:33the bottery boxes and carry it over the plate. I see. The plates
- 7:38are coated with quicksilver or mercury, and the quicksilver picks off most of the
- 7:43gold and from the crust. All on this combination of quicksilver and gold.
- 7:47We call them margam. And you scrape there's a elgum off the plates and
- 7:50take it to the refinery. Yes, mister Keane. It refinally separates the
- 7:56gold from the quicksilver and cast it into bars. Very interesting. Well,
- 8:00thanks very much. I'll run along and look the rest of the place over.
- 8:03See you later. Last way you belong your hang from your face and

- 9:00I'm the boss here, and I say get out. All right,
- 9:03Crosby, I'll get out, but I'll be back. I never leave a
- 9:07job unfinished. All right, pick them up, you and carry them.
- 9:26I know they're heavy, but they have to have a solid lead lining so
- 9:30we can ship bodies in them. Put them in the old powder house and
- 9:33shut the door when you're through. Okay, Boss, I'm on colored.
- 9:37Oh I get it up there. Now. We're gonna have to move some
- 9:45of these empty powder cakes to make room for all three caskets. Jarvis,
- 9:50Hu stay here and pile them up out of the way, rest of if
- 9:52you get the other caskets. Okay, boss, all right up to it,
- 10:01hebby? Is that u? Nick? Where are you behind these cakes?
- 10:05You start putting them up? You can talk while you went? Oh
- 10:09sure, Nick? What happened? Nick? Why are you hiding in here?
- 10:13Or? The ordered me to get out and happ immediately The assistant super
- 10:16sisted to hide here until they get me arride back to town. He does,
- 10:20why Crosby in a bitter than I do. What would you? Well?
- 10:22I got a job as crusher man on the night shifts at the mill.
- 10:26What are these boxes you're bringing in here? Caskets? Crosby told the
- 10:30chiefs to the body of the two detectives who got killed were to be taken
- 10:33up and shipped to their frame. Quite become the men of another box.
- 10:39All right, Nick, there were only two detectives who were killed. Who
- 10:52do you supposed the third boxes? Four? For you? I imagine four?
- 10:56Remember to thank you and Nick Carter, I'm older, mister king.
- 10:58These neighborhood go to well, I'll certainly see that that casket, says her,
- 11:03Stubby, you know whether the niggas are buried the housed to told me
- 11:05the Crosby knows because he and a couple of new hands took the bodies away.
- 11:09I see, Scubby, I got an idea. But the men bring
- 11:13in the other cascaf you go up with him and makes an excuse to come
- 11:16back in you again. Okay, all right, fell it right here,
- 11:26All right, I'll do what I think. Oh, hey, boys,
- 11:31to drop my life inside the power house to get what you want. So
- 11:35long as you're not late for your shift at the mill. Okay, Bob,
- 11:37I'll be there. Oh, Kurney, they've gone No, that's your
- 11:43idea. First, shut the doorscu Oh sure, I'll Scubby. I want
- 11:52to see what's in these caskets. And I got screwed there in my night.
- 11:56How so have I look, I'll help you, good lave. They
- 12:00only use four screws covers down, makes it simpler. But why do you
- 12:05want to see what's inside? Nick? You gotta hunch that up. Yeah,
- 12:09got it already. Yeah, all right, let's sick her up right
- 12:15there. Uh huh, I hunch his right, Scubby. The caskets are
- 12:20not lead line. The extra wait is do to this scrap button in the
- 12:22battle like Cosby said they had to have lead lightly so they could be picked
- 12:26up the body. These caskets figure in this game more than justice casket.
- 12:30Scubby well Cosby told the teacher to have a fresh team hits to the large
- 12:33swagon for him at midnight to night. I thought, so, I mean,
- 12:37he's gonna take these caskets somewhere tonight, and I want to know where.
- 12:41Yeah, but how are you gonna find out? I'm going with him
- 12:43hidden in this casket. I'll get in it and you put the lid back
- 12:46on. Well, but Nick, your father there with the lid down,
- 12:48You're gonna put four small pieces of wood under the coffin lid before you screw
- 12:52it down. But Nick will shut it onon Utah, all right, all
- 12:56right, all right, okay, keep your head down while I put the
- 13:01lid on. Okay, have you learned anything? Yes? The only place
- 13:09in the mill where the gold could be stole them was the room of the
- 13:11battery box. The place. No, not yet, I hope I learned
- 13:16tonight. When I'm a duty in the mill, you'll take care of that
- 13:22well they needed. Oh, I was a great Nick Carter during the night.
- 13:43LETTERDS, you mean, mister Dave Jarvis. He's doing swell. Look
- 13:48at him taking another drink. He's been hitting the water bucking steady for the
- 13:52last half hour. There's the local working. I'll say the bees are any
- 13:58bonnet already famous? Nick Carter will go away the other you do? What
- 14:05are you fellas doing dancing around like that? You can't fool me. There're
- 14:11a lot of billy goes. You gotta get me at three. Keep your
- 14:22eye on him. If he starts fighting, la him out with a crowbar.
- 14:24Don't take any sense. Okay, did you see that he's sitting for
- 14:39the cliffs just like the others. Orlando's mixture hasn't failed yet. What next,
- 14:46cris me? I didn't get my team from the stable at midnight to
- 14:50night and meet me at the old powder House. Now we can put Nick
- 14:54Carter's name on the third cast. That's the last fuck. But all right,
- 15:15it is put on the top rock. I know that was That's hard.
- 15:20I'd like to see its knew I was in this. What did you
- 15:26take this? Well? Brom this Lord Tuber and the only first team in
- 15:30the table. You gotta hog run the night over the rough country where those
- 15:33cuckold possibly go. All right, Sam, let him go and the fire
- 15:39up here with me in they go watch him. Okay, wow, we
- 15:50put a better room to dry him up. Now that the low car is
- 15:54done for Cotter, we can bring this business to a successful woman. I
- 16:03hope we're not going part at this race. You mean we're gonna quit?
- 16:07We sure of. We'll market the stuff and make a clean getaway. This
- 16:12is the roughest ride I never had. No you wanna market the starter?
- 16:19Syle? Tell me, I'll say that each of beget stop a fo they're
- 16:26running away. One of the rains is running away. I can't count on
- 16:32this. We're gonna trash jumps for your ride. We got off and time.
- 16:45Boy, Yeah, he look at that cask and caused me the one
- 16:49with the lid torn off. Eh oh, that's the infernal reporter I ordered
- 16:55to get out of campus afternoon. What was he doing in that casking?
- 16:59Never'm gonna not now getting while he's only half couch. Come on, Sam,
- 17:03no you o good work? Boys that fixts his mister reporter hie hands
- 17:11and feet with that rope. Okay, boy, you won't fight no more
- 17:15for a while. Now, Hey, look, super, here's a pair
- 17:19of handcuffs in his pocket and a couple of guns. Hey, what kind
- 17:22of reporter are you going around with handcuffs and guns in your pocket? You'll
- 17:27have to draw your own conclusions. Crossby, I've drawn them already. You're
- 17:33here to help Nick Carter, but by this time Carter's where neither you nor
- 17:37anyone else is going to help him. He's local, lom local. But
- 17:45you never can be sure about Carter Crosby. I can this time, and
- 17:49I can be sure of you too. All right, putting back on the
- 17:52casket, boys, put the cover on. Here, it down if you
- 17:56can't find the screws. Yeah, here's some nails on you in your girl.
- 18:03I got out the last finals in your coffee, but you won't get
- 18:06out this time. Get the little boys. That dog that's well, that's
- 18:22enough. He can't do anything with his hands tied. Legerd You and Sam
- 18:26get the shovels that we're in the wagon and dig a nice deep hole.
- 18:32We'll bury our reporter friend with our blessed Hey, oh, how are you
- 18:56you get them? Senses? Now? You here? You know what need
- 19:02say? Yeah? I know you eat better? Now? Who are you
- 19:07to Orlando? You save the land? Of life. The Landa your friend
- 19:12heat better quick? Thanks? Oh tell me how did I get here just
- 19:22before sun? Come up? The chase? Crazy man? Who would lend
- 19:26me? You can shoot? See you rent you come fall down by Orlander
- 19:30shirt in head so lander hut Wowt'm glad you were around when I passed out.
- 19:37Husby you enemy is now you say you were chasing a crazy man him
- 19:45drink local that two other men come before. I could have been what he
- 19:52said he was local Solanda. What did you want to find him for?
- 19:56We want save him, not give medicine, make him well? But but
- 20:00but what did you want to save him? Claud Did they give him local?
- 20:03This man and Crosby one save man Crosby one Landa listen, I think
- 20:11this is crazy there No, I hate to have you, but it's away
- 20:19so quick. The latter give me some broke. I'll tie his hands and
- 20:26fete while he's unconscious. Of course, if you into the war, think
- 20:37they come all better from local Scubby, I should hold you now. Make
- 20:45come all right, scabby, Oh boy drinking, come on drinking elbows and
- 20:53boys come on mhm h spie you all right? When him? Wake up?
- 21:04Poor guy and I'll tire your arms anyway and you'll see more. Hey,
- 21:15what this coil of wire with a lot of metal? That's dance?
- 21:26Of course, the mystery of the flying duck mine is a mystery no longer
- 21:44getting better now that you've had them sleep. I feel pretty good. Wi.
- 21:48You don't remember what happened to you yesterday morning? Well, the last
- 21:52thing I recall is going to the water, but didn't taking a long drink.
- 21:55I think this. The more I drank, the more I wanted that
- 21:57was loaded with loco weed juice. I'm surprised you didn't notice it. Oh,
- 22:02I'm surprised at myself now. But both the Amalgamators, even Crosby himself,
- 22:07kept drinking while pretending two of them that same bucket. Well, they
- 22:11certainly had me food. You remember seeing these discs strong on this corl of
- 22:17wire? Oh yeah, yeah, I recall seeing one of the Amalgamators have
- 22:22it last night. Why did I bring it here? You did? And
- 22:26it breaks the case wide open. Well, good for me, even if
- 22:29I don't didn't know it. Hey, tell me, Nick, what are
- 22:32those discs us? For them? Here? I'll show you. Yeah,
- 22:34I'll watch I see this stuff I'm scraping over the amalgam Make sure it quicksilver
- 22:41and gold. The men who worked in the battery boxes and the mail the
- 22:44amalgamators hung these discs and a lot more like them than the battery boxes right
- 22:48where they catched the best of the gold before it flowed over the other plate.
- 22:52They took out over half the gold that flowed into the box this way.
- 22:56So that's where all those thousands of dollars worth of gold disappeared. To
- 22:59ask, a very clever method of stealing the gold. Now, if we
- 23:03can only find out what Crosby and his gang do with the amalgama after they
- 23:07scrape it off their disk, you run, catch Crosbie, I'll say,
- 23:11we do if we can. Hey, look who is she? Oh that's
- 23:15Orlando. She saved my life. Oh and yours too, incidentally saved my
- 23:19life. Oh all that local weed uce who drank is fatal on the Orlando
- 23:23gave you a nice antidote for it. Oh gosh, thanks Solanda. She
- 23:29I'm sure much obliged Crosby. Track your knee, Miss seem the landy knew
- 23:33all about Crosby. You come with me. Where are you taking us?
- 23:38Cave inside milking the hide stuff. Come you show you? So this is
- 23:56where Crosby hides out. Huh yeah, too bad. There's no one here
- 24:02now, but they've been here today. Look at Scubby, But that looks
- 24:07like the scrap iron we took out of the cast get in the old powder
- 24:08house before you hit in it, right, Scubby, And this scrap iron
- 24:12was in the other two caskets. So they brought them up here. I
- 24:17wonder why. There's the answer over there in that corner and the fairestrun it.
- 24:23It's still warm. We must have scared them off wh we came up.
- 24:27Wait, they take the cover up the record, Nick, Is that
- 24:37gold in there? That's just what it is, out of the gold stolen
- 24:41from the mind. This is where the gang refined the amount them they scraped
- 24:45off their discs. Much easier to handle gold this way because it weighs,
- 24:48so must live. Since we know from what Daple said that they never disposed
- 24:52of any of the stolen gold, they must have eight or nine hundred pounds
- 24:55of it by now. Hey, maybe they've got it hidden around here somewhere.
- 24:59They did have, but not now, well they should think so me.
- 25:03Yeah, take a look outside, there's been digging the very recently.
- 25:07Oh, but the course like they had to dig up the bodies of the
- 25:10two detectives to ship them back home. No, no, Noby. The
- 25:12way it looks to me is this, after I got away from them last
- 25:15night. How the beanie men took up the casket. They tried to bury
- 25:18me in and I'll bury you. Hey, you didn't tell me about later,
- 25:22skey. Right now, I'm interested what happened here? They brought the
- 25:25three caskets up here early this morning, loaded them up. How could they
- 25:26load three of them? They only had two bodies, No, Scubby,
- 25:30three caskets were loaded up. Don't you want to stand yet? No?
- 25:33They come afraid, I don't. How could they be golding up? How
- 25:36good are you riding a horse? Riding a horse? Yeah? Oh,
- 25:41I used to ride years ago? Why good lander? And you got U
- 25:45couple of good, fast horses right away for you? You good horses?
- 25:48Quick, good, Come on, Scubby, that's got the horses, and
- 25:51ride to the railway station before the east bound crane gets in. But Nick,
- 26:07what's all a hurry unless I'm home, Scubby, These three caskets are
- 26:11going east on the next train. We've got to get there in time to
- 26:14stop them. We even Crosby himself would recognize us these Indian costumes of line
- 26:18beleaves. Well, we may need to be disguised before we get through.
- 26:22Hey, you didn't finish telling me how you got away from Crosby and his
- 26:26gang when they started to bury alive. What did happen? Nick, Well,
- 26:30they dug the hole and they put the casket down in it. I
- 26:33tried to pry the lid loose, but my hands were tied behind me.
- 26:37I worked on them, and just as they started throwing the dirt back on
- 26:40top of the casket, I finally got my hands free and untied my feet.
- 26:44Just then I heard shooting and some female screaming. Some female hop there
- 26:48in the wild. Yeah, there the land, I found out later when
- 26:52I managed to loosen the cover and push it up enough to see that Crosby
- 26:55and the men were watching something across the clearing. So I seize my chance
- 26:59and climbed carefully out of the hole. On the opposite side. I started
- 27:03to run. They saw me and started shooting. Fortunately, though they were
- 27:07bad shots, and I was almost free when a bullet grazed my head.
- 27:11Must have stunned me because I remember nothing more until I woke up in Zorlanda's
- 27:15hut this morning. Well, do you know what it was that distracted the
- 27:18men's attention. Orlando told me that you were chasing her, trying to shoot
- 27:22her. She was screaming. You chased her on the other side of the
- 27:26clearing and then went off after something else. For just about then that you
- 27:30saw me running toward her. When Crosby saw me drop, he gave up
- 27:33the chase. Orlando waited until they went back, and then dragged me to
- 27:37her hut. Gosh, Dick, we all otters Orlando Wright, Scubby,
- 27:42and the best way we can pay that debt to see that Crosby and his
- 27:45murdering peals end up where they belonged, behind bars or in the electric chairs.
- 28:03Do you understand, Betsy, you want the police chief to meet you
- 28:07at the station in ten minutes, and you want mister Dalrymple and the President
- 28:11and treasure of the mine to meet you in the chiefs off within an hour.
- 28:15That's right. I'll be sure you get them all. Don't worry,
- 28:17I'll take care of it. These are the ones, thick, Please see
- 28:30here on the baggage truck. Have you noticed the names that I'm Stubby,
- 28:33Yeah, Joe, Riley, Hill, Kestler. Oh look, Nick Carter,
- 28:40I'd rather be out here addressed as an Indian than in there rested as
- 28:42a course one s now reined in the face. We got to get these
- 28:48caskets into the baggage car in just a minute. You see this badge,
- 28:51special agent, So what what do you want me to do? Just leave
- 28:53these caskets in the baggage truck for now, but they're supposed to go on
- 28:57saying here quiet, hey, look care bagist master, get these boxes on
- 29:02the train and be click about it. No, be in hurry, mister,
- 29:06Why you Indian meddler? What the douce to you? You look behind
- 29:10you? What do you mean? Take your head off? Scubby? Sure,
- 29:14Nick, there you are, mister Crosby, Dave Jarvis. Why you
- 29:17don't try to start anything, crossy. I've got like boxes. Hire a
- 29:21man opposite these three right here. That's your hands to all of your past.
- 29:25Why all of you? You're three men are under arrest. Doctor probably
- 29:30the flying duck minded with the murder of Detective Riley and Kessler. I'm mister
- 29:45Dalrymple, I asked you and the officials of the Flying Duck Mine to meet
- 29:49me here in the office of the Chief of Police, because I want to
- 29:52show you what's in the casket that cross they was taking back least with him.
- 29:56Now. The first casket is supposed to contain the body of Phil Kestler.
- 30:00Oh, it's got to open it, sure, Nick Cool, Yes
- 30:04she. In these three caskets you'll find the entire amount of gold stolen from
- 30:08the mine, stolen by Dalrymple, the mine manager, Crosby, the mind
- 30:11super and four other workmen who worked in the amalgam room of the mill.
- 30:15They stole the amalgam we find it in their own furnace, and buried it
- 30:17in two holes in the ground, which was supposed to be the graves of
- 30:19the two dead detectives. It used to cut it. That much gold would
- 30:22make the caskets pretty heavy. That next to wait the noticed no cheep,
- 30:27because when you ship a body by train, the casket has to be lead
- 30:30lined and heremetically sealed. That means it weighs much more than the usual casket.
- 30:34Crosbie, Ledyard and Perkins, we're each going to take one of the
- 30:37caskets east for them as a personal baggage, which would prevent anybody from examine
- 30:41them too closely. One of the cleverest kings I've seen in a long time,
- 30:45but it wasn't clever enough. Not with Nick on the job. You
- 30:48have to get up early in the morning to beat eggs. This was another
- 31:10strange experience of Nick Carter, Master Detective called the Flying Duck Murders or Nick
- 31:15Carter and the Gold Team welcome back. Well, this is the first episode
- 31:26where we get to hear one of my favorite openings. Now, I know
- 31:30that some listeners will probably find this opening to put it kindly over the top,
- 31:37but I really love the knocking on the door thing, absolutely classic,
- 31:47and it will be with this series for a few years. Just such a
- 31:52just such a fun touch. So that's one of my that's one of my
- 31:59big fites. And this actually was the first episode it was introduced because there
- 32:06was not a missing episode between last weeks and this week. So, like
- 32:12I said, one of my absolute favorite ways to open any radio show,
- 32:16that knocking on the door. I do think the villain needed a memo that
- 32:23you if you're going to call someone to report that you are at your wits
- 32:29end and in serious jeopardy against the greatest detective in the world. You might
- 32:37want to be sure the detectives out of the building first, not shall we
- 32:44say, good form, but a great case, another good mystery. And
- 32:50now we turn to listener comments and feedback, and we have our first reactions
- 32:54to the Carter series. Cheryl writes loved the Nick Carter series, and Tamra
- 33:00says the Nick Carter Show is one of the best. I was so sick
- 33:04of Holmes. I'm excited for a change. Well, I'm glad you're enjoying
- 33:08it, and we've got a good two years plus of Nick to enjoy.
- 33:14So I hope all of our listeners are having as much fun with it as
- 33:17I am, so that we'll do it for today. Join us tomorrow,
