- 0:15Speaker 1: All right, so Florida got the win at Auburn. It
- 0:18Speaker 1: was a big win. It was an emotional win. It
- 0:20Speaker 1: was a road SEC win in a place that is
- 0:22Speaker 1: not easy to play in. And according to Coach Sumrall,
- 0:27Speaker 1: it's already completely irrelevant. That was his message coming out
- 0:30Speaker 1: of Monday's press conference. And he basically said, if Florida
- 0:33Speaker 1: plays against Ole Miss the way it played against Auburn,
- 0:36Speaker 1: the Gators are going to lose.
- 0:38Speaker 2: And he really wasn't subtle about it. He opened the.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Press conference by saying, we got to get a lot better.
- 0:44Speaker 1: He said last week's performance will not cut it. He
- 0:47Speaker 1: took it even further. He said Florida plays, if Florida
- 0:50Speaker 1: plays like it has in any of its games so
- 0:52Speaker 1: far this.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Season, the Gators won't beat Ole Miss, no chance.
- 0:55Speaker 1: And that's probably the biggest takeaway from his whole press conference.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Florida is coming off a game where it did a
- 1:01Speaker 1: lot of really good things. The Gators went on the road.
- 1:03Speaker 1: They scored 44 points. The offense made explosive plays. Jaden
- 1:07Speaker 1: Baugh was a monster. They won the middle eight. They
- 1:10Speaker 1: made enough plays defensively to survive, and they got out
- 1:13Speaker 1: of Jordan Hare with a win. But Summerall clearly does
- 1:16Speaker 1: not want this team falling in love with the result.
- 1:20Speaker 1: When he went back and watched the tape, he also
- 1:21Speaker 1: saw a Florida team that repeatedly gave Auburn opportunities to
- 1:24Speaker 1: stay in the game, or as he put it, the
- 1:27Speaker 1: Gators tried to beat the Gators. And that might be
- 1:30Speaker 1: the quote of the press conference. Against Auburn, Florida survived
- 1:34Speaker 1: some of those mistakes. Now, against Ole Miss, Summerall doesn't
- 1:37Speaker 1: think they will. Let's start with the penalties. Florida has
- 1:40Speaker 1: now had some penalty issues over the last several quarters,
- 1:42Speaker 1: and Summerall said there were three plays in particular that
- 1:45Speaker 1: he showed the entire team. The taunting penalty after the
- 1:49Speaker 1: fourth and one touchdown, the unsportsmanlike penalty after the extra point, and.
- 1:54Speaker 2: The block that continued out of bounds.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Now, Summerall did say that he sent a few of
- 1:59Speaker 1: these calls to the league office, and he clearly disagreed
- 2:02Speaker 1: with some of the officiating. But he also made something
- 2:05Speaker 1: very clear. Florida was not innocent. There were penalties that
- 2:09Speaker 1: were absolutely deserved, and those got called out in front
- 2:13Speaker 1: of everybody. And I actually like the way he explained
- 2:16Speaker 1: what he wants from this team. He doesn't want them
- 2:19Speaker 1: playing passive. He doesn't want them afraid to be physical.
- 2:22Speaker 1: He said he actually wants them to play with an edge.
- 2:25Speaker 1: He wants them to have that mentality that they're not
- 2:27Speaker 1: taking anything from anybody, but that there has to be
- 2:31Speaker 1: a line. Be physical, be aggressive, finish blocks, play nasty.
- 2:34Speaker 1: But when the play is over, stop. Those extra five
- 2:38Speaker 1: seconds after the whistle can completely change a football game.
- 2:41Speaker 1: And against an Ole Miss team that Summerall clearly believes
- 2:44Speaker 1: is one of the best teams Florida will play all season,
- 2:46Speaker 1: you cannot give them free yards. The other area he
- 2:49Speaker 1: was extremely critical of was Florida's coverage. And this was
- 2:53Speaker 1: interesting because he basically said you could make two completely
- 2:56Speaker 1: different highlight tapes from the Auburn game. You could take
- 2:59Speaker 1: eight or ten plays and say, man, Florida's secondary looked
- 3:02Speaker 1: really good. Cormani's interception would obviously be on there. There
- 3:06Speaker 1: were snaps where the coverage was exactly what Florida wanted.
- 3:10Speaker 1: And then you could make another eight or ten play
- 3:13Speaker 1: cut up where it looks completely different. And Summerall said
- 3:16Speaker 1: Auburn's final touchdown made him want to puke.
- 3:19Speaker 2: That was his words.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Because the issue isn't that Florida can't cover people. They've
- 3:24Speaker 1: shown they can. The problem is consistency. And that becomes
- 3:27Speaker 1: even more important this week because Summerall absolutely loves Trinidad Chambliss.
- 3:32Speaker 2: I mean, really, really likes him.
- 3:34Speaker 1: At one point, Summerall called him the best quarterback in
- 3:37Speaker 1: college football. Later, he said he was as good a quarterback,
- 3:40Speaker 1: as good a college player as he's ever seen with
- 3:43Speaker 1: his own two eyes. Now, that is a pretty strong endorsement.
- 3:47Speaker 1: And when your head coach is talking like that about
- 3:49Speaker 1: an opposing quarterback, you better believe the secondary is going
- 3:52Speaker 1: to hear all about discipline all week long. Ole Miss
- 3:58Speaker 1: is going to find the guy who relaxes. They're going
- 4:01Speaker 1: to find the defender whose eyes get in the wrong place.
- 4:03Speaker 1: They're going to find the guy who thinks that he
- 4:05Speaker 1: has a playoff. And somehow basically said that. Every player
- 4:09Speaker 1: has to prepare like he is going to be the
- 4:11Speaker 1: challenged player on every snap. Eventually, Ole Miss is going
- 4:15Speaker 1: to find you. And that brings me to something else
- 4:18Speaker 1: that I found interesting, which we're going to get into
- 4:21Speaker 1: right after we take a quick break. Guys, I want
- 4:23Speaker 1: to talk to you about us being available on audio platforms.
- 4:27Speaker 1: We are now on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. You guys
- 4:30Speaker 1: keep messaging me, reaching out, telling me you want an
- 4:33Speaker 1: audio option.
- 4:34Speaker 2: So now we have it.
- 4:35Speaker 1: If there is an option we aren't on yet and
- 4:37Speaker 1: you think we should be on, let me know down
- 4:39Speaker 1: in the comments. I'll do everything I can to help
- 4:41Speaker 1: you out there. Now you should be able to binge
- 4:43Speaker 1: the show as you drive or you're on your way
- 4:45Speaker 1: up to the game, something like that. Check us out
- 4:48Speaker 1: on audio platforms as well. Okay, so this is the
- 4:52Speaker 1: other part I thought was interesting. For as critical as
- 4:54Speaker 1: Summerall was about Florida's mistakes, he seems really happy with
- 4:58Speaker 1: where this offense is going, especially with Buster and the
- 5:01Speaker 1: offensive staff. And I think Florida fans are starting to
- 5:03Speaker 1: see why. Summerall talked about the way Buster creates conflicts
- 5:07Speaker 1: for defenders. Now, Florida may run a lot of the
- 5:10Speaker 1: same concepts week to week, but they dress them up differently.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Different formations, different motions, different pictures, different ways to make
- 5:17Speaker 1: a defender think that he is seeing one thing when
- 5:19Speaker 1: he's really seeing something else. And the goal is to
- 5:22Speaker 1: put that defender in conflict.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Do I play the run? Do I play the pass?
- 5:25Speaker 2: Where's my leverage? Where are my eyes?
- 5:27Speaker 1: What are they telling me? And then once you create
- 5:30Speaker 1: that hesitation, you attack it. We saw a great example
- 5:33Speaker 1: of that against Auburn with the double pass. And one
- 5:35Speaker 1: of my favorite parts of the press conference was Summerall
- 5:37Speaker 1: talking about that play.
- 5:39Speaker 2: He said he wasn't even completely sure when Buster called it.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Like, is this going to work? Florida had practiced it.
- 5:45Speaker 1: They'd worked through how they wanted it to look. And
- 5:48Speaker 1: then on third and long, Buster decided, hey, let's go.
- 5:50Speaker 1: And Summerall basically said, he almost asked him, are you sure?
- 5:53Speaker 1: And he said, but then he thought, you know what?
- 5:55Speaker 2: Let it rip.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Auburn gave them the exact look they wanted. Florida hit
- 5:59Speaker 1: the play. And it ended up being one of the
- 6:01Speaker 1: biggest calls of the night. And Summerall said something important here.
- 6:04Speaker 1: The play itself wasn't necessarily some revolutionary concept that nobody
- 6:07Speaker 1: had ever seen. They'd had versions of it in the
- 6:10Speaker 1: playbook for years. The genius was the timing of the call,
- 6:14Speaker 1: and that's what impressed him. And that's one thing I
- 6:16Speaker 1: think has been really encouraging about this offense so far.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Florida just isn't lining up and saying, here's what we run,
- 6:22Speaker 1: now stop it. They're attacking looks. They're adapting personnel. They're
- 6:26Speaker 1: trying to put players in positions that fit what they
- 6:28Speaker 1: do well. And Summerall specifically talked about how this version
- 6:32Speaker 1: of the offense doesn't necessarily look exactly like what Buster
- 6:34Speaker 1: has done on other stops because the personnel is different.
- 6:38Speaker 1: And great offensive coordinators adapt to the talent that they have. Now,
- 6:41Speaker 1: that might sound obvious, but we've all watched enough football
- 6:44Speaker 1: to know that plenty of coaches don't do that. Another
- 6:47Speaker 1: position group Summerall really praised were the tight ends. And honestly,
- 6:50Speaker 1: this might be one of the biggest surprises of the
- 6:52Speaker 1: season this far. Summerall admitted that in the spring, he
- 6:55Speaker 1: looked at that room and basically thought, What exactly do
- 6:59Speaker 1: we have here? He jokingly called it the land of
- 7:01Speaker 1: misfit toys. There was roster turnover. There were questions about roles.
- 7:05Speaker 1: There wasn't a lot of proven production. And now he
- 7:08Speaker 1: says he trusts that group as much as almost anybody
- 7:10Speaker 1: on offense. Lakota was specifically praised for his blocking. Summerall
- 7:14Speaker 1: said he was Florida's offensive player of the week previously
- 7:17Speaker 1: without really putting up any stats because he physically brought
- 7:21Speaker 1: it as a blocker. He talked about Harper being a
- 7:24Speaker 1: Swiss Army knife. He talked about Amir making the big
- 7:27Speaker 1: catch and continuing to improve as a perimeter blocker. And
- 7:30Speaker 1: he talked about the growth throughout that room. That's important
- 7:32Speaker 1: because this offense is asking its tight ends to do
- 7:35Speaker 1: a lot.
- 7:35Speaker 2: They have to block. They have to move.
- 7:37Speaker 1: They have to create those pictures that we were just
- 7:41Speaker 1: talking about. And when you start trusting that group, it
- 7:44Speaker 1: gives Buster a lot more flexibility.
- 7:46Speaker 2: And then there's Jaden Baugh.
- 7:47Speaker 1: And I think Summerall gave us a really good explanation
- 7:49Speaker 1: for why Baugh seems to be so dangerous and get
- 7:52Speaker 1: more dangerous as the game goes on. He says, Baugh
- 7:56Speaker 1: is the kind of running back who gets better with carries.
- 7:58Speaker 1: The more touches he gets, the more comfortable he becomes.
- 8:01Speaker 1: His vision improves. He starts seeing the running lanes clearer.
- 8:04Speaker 1: He becomes more decisive. And obviously the physical part of
- 8:07Speaker 1: his game, it begins to take over. The question mentioned
- 8:10Speaker 1: pro football focus crediting Baugh with 13 broken tackles against Auburn.
- 8:14Speaker 1: And that's not hard to believe when you watch the tape.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Some backs make defenders miss by avoiding contact. Baugh can
- 8:18Speaker 1: do that. But Summerall also pointed out something that Baugh
- 8:21Speaker 1: does that makes people miss, and that's just simply running
- 8:25Speaker 1: through them. And that is going to matter against Ole Miss.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Because if Florida wants to keep that Ole Miss offense
- 8:30Speaker 1: off the field, Baugh.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Could once again become a huge part of the game plan.
- 8:35Speaker 1: But all of this brings us back to the same
- 8:37Speaker 1: thing Summerall keeps emphasizing. None of the good stuff from
- 8:40Speaker 1: Auburn matters anymore. He told the team it was okay
- 8:42Speaker 1: to feel good about the win. Until dinner on Sunday.
- 8:45Speaker 1: After that, it's done.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Move on.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Florida's 0-1-0 again. And Summerall had a really good line
- 8:50Speaker 1: about college football. Every Saturday, you're either going to be
- 8:53Speaker 1: promoted or exposed. And I think that's exactly what this
- 8:56Speaker 1: Ole Miss game is for Florida. We've learned something at Auburn.
- 8:59Speaker 1: We've learned Florida can go on the road in the
- 9:01Speaker 1: SEC and win. We've learned the offense can score points.
- 9:03Speaker 1: We've learned Jaden Baugh can carry the workload. We've learned
- 9:06Speaker 1: this offense can be aggressive. We've learned Florida can make
- 9:09Speaker 1: some big plays when it absolutely has to. But now
- 9:11Speaker 1: the question becomes, Can Florida play cleaner? Can the Gators
- 9:15Speaker 1: eliminate the penalties? Can they stop blowing coverages? Can they
- 9:18Speaker 1: maintain their edge without crossing the line? Can they take
- 9:21Speaker 1: away the emotional high of Auburn, throw it away, and
- 9:24Speaker 1: prepare for an even tougher opponent? Semmel clearly believes Ole
- 9:27Speaker 1: Miss is really good. He said that there is much
- 9:30Speaker 1: more than, you know, the same but different Ole Miss
- 9:34Speaker 1: team that he had previously seen.
- 9:35Speaker 2: This team is more.
- 9:37Speaker 1: There are new wrinkles. There are some new players. There
- 9:41Speaker 1: are some differences defensively and on special teams, but the
- 9:44Speaker 1: foundation's there. And Summerall also believes Ole Miss may be
- 9:47Speaker 1: a little more aggressive now on special teams. More pressure,
- 9:50Speaker 1: more attempts to block punts, more opportunities for Florida to
- 9:53Speaker 1: get caught if it isn't prepared. So this is going
- 9:56Speaker 1: to be one of those games where details matter everywhere. Offense, defense,
- 9:59Speaker 1: special teams. penalties, situational football, everything. And Florida does this
- 10:04Speaker 1: at home. They get this game at home. Summerall hasn't
- 10:07Speaker 1: even coached an SEC game in the swab, and he
- 10:11Speaker 1: is pretty excited and impressed with the environment that he's seen,
- 10:14Speaker 1: even though it hasn't been an SEC game.
- 10:16Speaker 2: He said FAU and Campbell felt electric.
- 10:19Speaker 1: So imagine what it is going to be like with
- 10:21Speaker 1: a ranked Ole Miss team coming into Gainesville. Florida will
- 10:24Speaker 1: need that crowd. Florida will need the energy. But the
- 10:27Speaker 1: crowd can't fix busted coverage. The crowd can't erase the
- 10:30Speaker 1: 15-point penalty. The crowd can't overcome the Gators beating themselves.
- 10:34Speaker 1: And that really was Summerall's entire message. Enjoy Auburn. Actually,
- 10:38Speaker 1: we hope you enjoyed Auburn with that EDD.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Past tense. It's over. Now get better.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Because Florida got away with some mistakes last week, and
- 10:47Speaker 1: Summerall doesn't think they'll get away with them again. And
- 10:50Speaker 1: if Florida wants to prove that Auburn was more than
- 10:52Speaker 1: just one Saturday night, Ole Miss is the next opportunity
- 10:57Speaker 1: to do it. We appreciate PrizePix for all their support.
