- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:13Our current series is Gentle Witnesses, sharing the
- 0:17good news at work in a way that
- 0:18actually makes sense.
- 0:24We'll be going through a paradigm called the
- 0:26Five Thresholds of Faith.
- 0:28This comes from InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, specifically from
- 0:31a couple leaders named Don Evertz and Doug
- 0:33Schaupp, and we're right now in the second
- 0:35threshold, becoming curious.
- 0:37A lot of the examples that I've used
- 0:38so far in this series have been in
- 0:40one-on-one conversations, the idea that you
- 0:43might be having a conversation with a coworker,
- 0:45with a client, with somebody else you meet
- 0:46in the workplace, and just build that friendship
- 0:48in a one-on-one context.
- 0:50But I always want to be careful.
- 0:52Am I thinking too individualistically?
- 0:54I grew up in the United States in
- 0:55a Western culture that tends to be very
- 0:57individualistic.
- 0:58When you read the New Testament, you see
- 1:00communal language a lot more frequently, and we
- 1:03see dynamics of the good news being proclaimed
- 1:06in communities and through communities of people.
- 1:10For example, think about the book of Acts
- 1:12on the day of Pentecost, and the Holy
- 1:14Spirit is poured out on the disciples.
- 1:16How does that story open?
- 1:18Let me read it.
- 1:18It's Acts chapter 2, verse 1.
- 1:20When the day of Pentecost came, they were
- 1:21all together in one place.
- 1:24So Luke, same as the Gospel of Luke,
- 1:26same writer writing Acts, he's emphasizing when the
- 1:29Holy Spirit comes and it catalyzes the proclamation
- 1:31of the good news, and many people come
- 1:32to faith.
- 1:33What started that was the disciples being together
- 1:37in one place.
- 1:38There was a community of worship, a community
- 1:40of mission that had deep trust with each
- 1:42other that were all dedicated to Jesus, and
- 1:45that's the setting in which this amazing movement
- 1:47of God was catalyzed.
- 1:49So this is also going to be true
- 1:51when we think about sharing the good news
- 1:53in a way that actually makes sense.
- 1:55It's not just something that each of us
- 1:56does individually as Christians or as disciples of
- 1:59Jesus.
- 1:59It's something that communities of believers do together.
- 2:03Now, that word communities of believers might immediately
- 2:05make you think about your local church, and
- 2:07that's great.
- 2:08That is, I would say, the primary context
- 2:10where we should think about the community of
- 2:12faith, is in our local church.
- 2:14And so thinking about what are ways that
- 2:16we as a community can invite people in,
- 2:18so that it's not just one-on-one
- 2:20connection and conversation, but people encountering multiple friends
- 2:23who are disciples of Jesus and exploring faith
- 2:26in that context.
- 2:27Maybe there's a way that your church small
- 2:29group could become a place like that that's
- 2:31hospitable and open to people who are still
- 2:33asking spiritual questions.
- 2:34Or maybe there are church events that would
- 2:36make sense to invite people to.
- 2:37Maybe there's a course like the Alpha Course
- 2:39that's specifically designed to create space for people
- 2:41to ask those questions.
- 2:43So all those are good things to think
- 2:44about.
- 2:45But in this series, we're looking at sharing
- 2:47the good news at work in a way
- 2:49that actually makes sense.
- 2:50So what does Christian community mean when you're
- 2:52at work?
- 2:53Well, what I have found is often really
- 2:55powerful if you're in a secular workplace.
- 2:58So assuming this is a place where not
- 2:59everybody around you shares a commitment to Jesus
- 3:01because of the organizational mission that your workplace
- 3:04has.
- 3:05Assuming you're in a secular workplace where not
- 3:07everybody is a Christian, it's really helpful if
- 3:10you want to be somebody who can share
- 3:11the good news to find fellow disciples of
- 3:14Jesus in that workplace, who also want to
- 3:16become people who can share the good news
- 3:18and then to pray and work together toward
- 3:20that.
- 3:21So I just want to share an example
- 3:23from my dad's life.
- 3:25My dad worked at McDonald's Corporation at their
- 3:27corporate headquarters.
- 3:28It used to be in Oakbrook and now
- 3:29it's in Chicago.
- 3:30This is a couple of decades ago.
- 3:32And he would find a Christian friend at
- 3:34work.
- 3:35One Christian friend who he found was a
- 3:37gentleman named Darwin.
- 3:39And he and Darwin started meeting together, praying
- 3:41together.
- 3:42And then they would co-lead a spiritual
- 3:44conversation group at their workplace and invite people
- 3:46from all different backgrounds to participate.
- 3:49And so that was a way that my
- 3:50dad found a way to not just by
- 3:52himself as an individual, but as the Christian
- 3:54community, at least him and Darwin as Christian
- 3:56friends together to be on mission.
- 3:59And they created that conversation group and they
- 4:01had atheist participants, Jewish participants, Muslim participants, Hindu
- 4:05participants, varieties of Christians, people who were irreligious.
- 4:09And people just shared what they thought about
- 4:11different spiritual things.
- 4:12And my dad would sometimes facilitate, Darwin would
- 4:15sometimes facilitate, and they would, they would make
- 4:17that a space where people could be curious
- 4:20together.
- 4:21So that's one of the best ways that
- 4:23you can encourage opportunities for curiosity is to
- 4:27create basically a curiosity context that's communal in
- 4:31your workplace, curiosity context that's communal.
- 4:35Now there's a few different ways that you
- 4:37can do this.
- 4:38And this may not be your personality type.
- 4:40If you're like, I'm not a leader, I'm
- 4:41not somebody who starts things.
- 4:43That's not what God's asking me to do.
- 4:45Like that's okay.
- 4:46Ask for God to bring a Christian friend
- 4:47who is a leader and you can be
- 4:49their wing man or wing woman and be
- 4:51part of the thing that they're leading.
- 4:53That's great.
- 4:54Um, or question, could God be gifting you
- 4:57with just enough leadership to start something like
- 4:59this?
- 4:59So, uh, it doesn't have to be something
- 5:01that isn't a good fit for you.
- 5:02It can be a fit for the way
- 5:03God made you, your spiritual gifts, your personality,
- 5:05but just be open to this possibility that,
- 5:07that maybe a group could come about.
- 5:09So, so one way to do this is
- 5:11with a paradigm called employee resource groups.
- 5:13Uh, and here I'm drawing on the work
- 5:15of a great organization called the faith and
- 5:17work movement.
- 5:17So you can learn more on their website,
- 5:19faithandworkmovement.org.
- 5:21Um, we'll try and put a link to
- 5:22that in whatever resources we have on our
- 5:24website, missioncentral.church related to this series, just
- 5:27so you can click through and find that
- 5:28their resource pages quickly.
- 5:30But there were a bunch of Christians like
- 5:31this in Silicon Valley who realized, Oh, we
- 5:35have special interest groups in our company, like,
- 5:37like social groups and people who want to
- 5:40study certain topics.
- 5:40Why don't we create an employee resource group
- 5:43about faith?
- 5:44And so they started doing this and would
- 5:46create spaces that had official company sponsorship as
- 5:49an employee resource group, but where the explicit
- 5:52purpose was for people to explore questions of
- 5:54faith and spirituality and things like that.
- 5:56And so now there's resources on that website
- 5:58for how you could do that in your
- 6:00workplace, create an employee resource group where people
- 6:02from all different backgrounds, Christians and others can
- 6:05come together and have a space for having
- 6:08those kinds of conversations.
- 6:09Again, a curiosity context that's communal.
- 6:13So that's one option is you could initiate
- 6:15an employee resource group in your workplace, and
- 6:18that organization could guide you through the steps
- 6:19of how to do that.
- 6:21Another option could be less formal, just starting
- 6:23like a lunch get together.
- 6:25This is the approach that I've taken in
- 6:27my current workplace.
- 6:27So I work at a food bank and
- 6:29it's not a Christian organization, although there are
- 6:31a lot of Christians who work there.
- 6:33So I found a friend of mine who
- 6:34was a Catholic and asked her if she
- 6:36was interested in starting a conversation group.
- 6:38And I found a friend of mine who
- 6:39doesn't have any particular religious commitments at all,
- 6:41but I knew she was really good at
- 6:42facilitating things and asked if she would want
- 6:44to help.
- 6:45And they both said yes.
- 6:45And so we started putting together some topics
- 6:47and because we're a food bank, we called
- 6:49it hungry for more.
- 6:51So kind of just a food themed or
- 6:54food banking themed title for our conversation group.
- 6:57And it's sometimes we talk about spiritual things.
- 7:00Sometimes we talk about social things.
- 7:01Sometimes we even talk about political things like
- 7:02this week we're going to be talking about
- 7:04the U.S. economic system and does it
- 7:05provide opportunities for some or opportunities for all?
- 7:08Is it just or unjust?
- 7:09And how does our philosophy, our personal faith
- 7:12affect that?
- 7:13We're creating a curiosity context that's communal because
- 7:18when we're at that lunch table conversation in
- 7:20my workplace, it's not like I have to
- 7:22like have all of the amazing things to
- 7:24say.
- 7:24I'm listening to other people.
- 7:26I'm asking questions to understand their perspectives.
- 7:28And sometimes a Christian coworker who I didn't
- 7:30even know as a Christian shows up and
- 7:32suddenly says something like brilliant and insightful that
- 7:34really helps people see how like, oh, yeah,
- 7:36like when we think about complex topics like
- 7:38economic injustice, like the Hebrew scriptures actually speak
- 7:40to that in the prophets and it's like,
- 7:41oh, wow, I didn't know Jonathan was that
- 7:43insightful.
- 7:44Sometimes it's somebody from a different religious background
- 7:46who opens up and is sharing about like,
- 7:47hey, man, one reason that I'm so passionate
- 7:49about food banking is because of the justice
- 7:51issues.
- 7:52We're creating an opportunity for people to be
- 7:53curious and it goes in all different directions.
- 7:56So again, it's not like there has to
- 7:58be some agenda of like, we're going to
- 8:00get the Christian message across in this meeting.
- 8:02No, no, no, no.
- 8:03It's we're going to create a space where
- 8:05everybody can be curious.
- 8:06Everybody can be open.
- 8:07And of course, obviously those who are disciples
- 8:09of Jesus then also have the opportunity to
- 8:11be curious and open and share their perspective,
- 8:13which includes sharing the good news.
- 8:15Here's how the good news motivates us in
- 8:17regard to whatever the issue of the day
- 8:19is.
- 8:20So these groups are easier to start than
- 8:23you might think.
- 8:23It just takes finding one or two other
- 8:25people.
- 8:26And I want to commend one more organization
- 8:27to you.
- 8:28I guess this is the like infomercial podcast
- 8:30episode where I talk about other ministries, but
- 8:32it's Q place.
- 8:33So you can go to Q place dot
- 8:35com.
- 8:36They have great training materials on how to
- 8:38start this kind of informal neighborhood or workplace
- 8:42conversation groups and explore what it means to
- 8:45believe in God or what people think about
- 8:47God in those groups.
- 8:49And so if that's something that you're interested
- 8:50in, you just you don't know how to
- 8:52take the practical steps.
- 8:53Just go to Q places website and sign
- 8:55up for one of their coaching sessions or
- 8:56look at one of their how to guides
- 8:58and just start thinking about are there other
- 9:00disciples of Jesus in my workplace where I
- 9:03could invite them to talk, to pray, and
- 9:05it just facilitate something simple.
- 9:07That's a curiosity space that's open to everyone
- 9:09who wants to come.
- 9:10When you create a space like that, curiosity
- 9:13can blossom and bloom more and more over
- 9:16time.
- 9:16And then some really exciting things can happen.
- 9:21Lord Jesus, thank you that you work not
- 9:24just in each of us individually, but in
- 9:25your body, the church, in your people, wherever
- 9:28they're scattered throughout the world and wherever they
- 9:30are in their workplaces.
- 9:32We pray that you would catalyze a mission
- 9:34that goes beyond individual conversations and creates these
- 9:37contexts for curiosity where your good news can
- 9:40be shared openly and without fear in an
- 9:42appropriate way that makes sense in different workplace
- 9:45contexts.
- 9:46We pray that you would guide even those
- 9:47who are listening right now and thinking about
- 9:49whether this is possible to find the resources
- 9:51they need, whether that's from a faith and
- 9:53work movement or Q place or our ministry,
- 9:56whatever you're doing, Lord, give the confidence that
- 9:59it's not too hard that people can take
- 10:02the step forward and that by your grace,
- 10:04they can become more curious about their coworkers
- 10:06and see their coworkers become more curious about
- 10:09you.
- 10:10Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 10:12do our work with you.
- 10:14Amen.
- 10:17Thanks for listening.
